Unfortunately, the surprise was to the downside after the big data specialist failed to live up to expectations.\nInvestors were left disappointed by a bottom-line miss and the company’s guidance and sent shares down 22% in the subsequent sessions.\nThat’s not to say Palantir’s 4Q20 results were all bad. In the quarter, the company generated revenue of $322.1 million, up 40% year-over-year and beating the estimates by $22 million. However, the company delivered an unexpected loss per share of $0.08, while the Street was was anticipating EPS to be positive at $0.02.\nFor the full year, revenue grew by 47% to $1.1 billion, while average revenue per customer reached $7.9 billion, a 41% year-over-year uptick.\nLooking ahead to Q1, Palantir anticipates top-line growth of 45% which should see revenue land at $348.87 million, higher than the Street’s $309.47 million forecast.\nFor 2021, the company anticipates revenue growth to stay over 30%. In fact, Palantir believes that 30% growth is doable in each of the next 5 years, culminating in 2025 revenue passing $4 billion.\nIn contrast to the negative reaction, overall, RBC analyst Matthew Hedberg views the latest results as “positive” and thinks the company is heading in the right direction.\n“Palantir delivered another strong quarter and guided up 1Q just as much. While some may lament the unchanged 2021 guidance, we view that as management balancing a relatively aggressive 5-year view with being sure to not overpromise near term,” the 5-star analyst said. “We believe the modularization of the company's offerings has helped it land more broadly, and likely will help it this year to seed future growth and look for the just announced IBM partnership to drive much stronger distribution in the Commercial space.”\nInvestors might have sent shares down following the fourth quarter results, but it is worth remembering the massive run up the shares had prior to the report’s release.\nPalantir’s lofty valuation is the reason why Hedberg sticks to a Sector Perform (i.e. Hold) rating. However, the analyst boosted his price target to $27 (from $15), which implies a 7% upside from current levels. (To watch Hedberg’s track record, click here)\nOverall, the majority on the Street remain Palantir skeptics. The stock has a Moderate Sell consensus rating, based on 2 Buys, 1 Hold and 4 Sells. The analysts expect the share price to stay rang-bound in the coming months, given the average price target currently stands at $25.83. (NYSE:NIO) is an exciting pure EV company out of China. I've been bullish on NIO due to its innovative vehicles, growth prospects, and future profitability potential. Moreover, due to its higher-end EV market position, production capacity, and other factors, I've often said that NIO is the closest pure EV competitor that Tesla (TSLA) has.

However, despite NIO's considerable long-term growth and profitability potential, the company may face challenges in the near and intermediate term. NIO's problems could persist for several reasons, including a sluggish Chinese economy, rising costs, lower margins, increased competition, and other variables. Nevertheless, a primary concern for NIO is Tesla. Tesla has illustrated that it can drop vehicle prices while maintaining high profitability, taking market share from NIO and other EV manufacturers.

Unfortunately for NIO, it cannot drop prices low enough to effectively compete with Tesla because of Tesla's economies of scale advantage and other factors. Therefore, NIO could continue struggling as we move forward. Moreover, NIO's recent earnings announcement showed the company missing top and bottom-line consensus estimates, putting the company's outlook into question. Additionally, NIO's margins continue deteriorating, and uncertainty surrounds its stock. Due to the increased transparency, NIO's risk/reward ratio has fallen, and I'm taking down my buy rating on its stock, transitioning to a hold instead.

Technically - Could Rally In The Near Term

NIO (StockCharts.com)

I won't deny it. Technically, NIO's chart appears bullish in the near term here. The stock likely put in a long-term bottom around the $7 level, staging a robust rally to around $16 before dropping back to the $10 range. We recently witnessed the 50-day MA move above the 200-day MA, a bullish technical signal. We also see a possible basing platform around the $10 support, implying we may see a rally in the near term. Nevertheless, this stock remains highly uncertain for the long term despite the near-term positives.

NIO's Missing Numbers - Puts Outlook in Question

NIO recently reported Q2 Non-GAAP EPADS of -$0.45, missing the four-cent consensus number. Moreover, it reported revenue of $1.21B, a $60M miss, and a 14.8% YoY decrease. Q2 deliveries came in at 23,520 vehicles, a 6.1% YoY decrease. Q2 vehicle sales came in at about $991M, representing a 25% YoY decline. Vehicle margin was only 6.2%, a staggering drop from the 16.7% in the same quarter last year.

NIO's Staggering $828 Million Loss

Additionally, NIO's gross margin crashed to just 1% from 13% in the same quarter last year. NIO's Q2 net loss widened to more than 6 billion Yuan, equating to a staggering quarterly loss of $828 million. Unfortunately, this massive loss isn't new for the company, as NIO's TTM loss is close to $3 billion. NIO produced about $6 billion in revenues during the same time frame. Thus, the $64,000 question is, when will NIO become profitable?

The answer is no time soon. Moreover, a capital raise could come shortly. Therefore, there's likely dilution in NIO's future, implying the stock could fall or stay range bound longer-term. Moreover, I wonder if NIO can effectively compete with Tesla in the long run.

NIO's Massive Tesla Problem

Tesla dominates China's higher-end EV segment. Tesla recorded more than 84,000 unit sales last month (August). This sales increase represents a 31% YoY surge for Tesla, bringing its YTD vehicles sold in China to about 625,000. NIO delivered 19,329 in August, bringing its YTD vehicle sales count to 94,352. However, management is guiding to sales of 15-17K in September. Therefore, we're seeing NIO's order book slowing down, and NIO needs many more sales (200-300K annually) to have a chance to be profitable. Tesla's position is so prominent in China that NIO may find it challenging to compete effectively in the long run.

What Would You Buy - Tesla or NIO?

NIO's popular ET5 sedan starts at about $46,100, and the price can climb into the $50-$60K range quickly once options are added. NIO's EC6 (Model Y competitor) starts at about $52,400, and the price can surge into the $60-$70K range with options. In contrast, the Model Y starts at only $41,000 in China and has (arguably) more advanced technologies and better engineering. Due to Tesla's remarkable ability to control prices, its mass-market vehicles are far more affordable than its prime competitor in China. Therefore, NIO's recent sales improvement may be temporary, and Tesla could continue taking NIO's market share as we advance. NIO can have a niche place in the EV market, but whether it can become mainstream and profitable remains to be seen. Therefore, I need more certainty as an investor here. Until then, I would rather own Tesla's stock instead.

NIO: Is It Worth The Risk?

NIO is an increased-risk investment because it is a Chinese company. However, NIO is even riskier because it's a highly unprofitable Chinese company. There is the added risk of unrelenting competition from Tesla and other profitable higher-end EV automakers. Moreover, some market participants have raised questions regarding NIO's accounting practices, pointing to a "Philidor" like entity (Wuhan Weineng) inflating NIO's revenues and profitability in recent years. Therefore, we have an additional risk of accounting irregularities with NIO. As an investor, why do I need to take such risks? To see NIO succeed? The company may grow in the long run, and its share price could go much higher in the coming years. Nevertheless, there is also an inflated risk of sideways price action and failure, which makes NIO a less attractive investment long-term. Therefore, I've reduced my buy rating to hold, recently selling my NIO shares following the troubling Q2 earnings announcement.

","source":"seekingalpha","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; (NYSE:NIO) is an exciting pure EV company out of China. Tesla has illustrated that it can drop vehicle prices while maintaining high profitability, taking market share from NIO and other EV manufacturers.Unfortunately for NIO, it cannot drop prices low enough to effectively compete with Tesla because of Tesla's economies of scale advantage and other factors. Due to the increased transparency, NIO's risk/reward ratio has fallen, and I'm taking down my buy rating on its stock, transitioning to a hold instead.Technically - Could Rally In The Near TermNIO (StockCharts.com)I won't deny it. York Capital Management also trimmed investments in electric vehicle, battery and solar glass makers, according to Mark He, co-portfolio manager of its $3.4 billion Asia funds.

“Clean energy remains one of the most important investment themes for years to come, it’s just that it ran a bit too much last year,” said He, adding the firm may buy the dips later.

Electric vehicle makers and their suppliers were among last year’s star stock performers as the new vehicles start to win over consumers with better technology and lower prices. Meanwhile, cleaner sources of energy, from solar to nuclear, were bolstered by pledges from China and other countries to curb emissions over the next few decades.

Those investments, together with shifting consumer behavior amid the pandemic, helped Asia managers beat peers in the best year for global hedge funds in at least seven years. A Bloomberg global hedge fund index gained 10% in 2020.

Though many Asia hedge fund managers still like the long-term outlook for sustainable investments, valuations look stretched. Apeiron began to “actively” cut its Tesla holdings for the first time this year, after buying convertible bonds and shares in 2019 when the market was divided on the company.

Tesla Tumble

Tesla’s stock price has tumbled 22% since a Jan. 25 high, as rising global bond yields compounded concerns about runaway stock valuations. Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. has lost 14% since Jan. 8, after the Tesla battery supplier more than tripled in the last 14 months.

“This valuation, even though we are a long-term believer, has baked in a lot of optionality other than the automobile business,” Yao said, referring to Tesla. “The premium of such optionality has become too demanding.”

Yao’s Apeiron team has instead identified parts suppliers with large global market share that can gain from the “multi-decade” EV trend that’s just beginning, she added, declining to identify them.

“The problem is, Tesla is expensive, the whole supply chain is not cheap either,” Yao said. “We are not there to pull the trigger. We may need to wait.”

LyGH Capital Pte, a Singapore-based firm with about 40% of its investments in clean energy, last year boosted holdings of EV parts suppliers where competition is less intense, said Grace Lu, chief investment officer of the company overseeing $500 million. More than two-thirds of the 7.5% January return for its hedge fund came from themes ranging from electric vehicles to solar power, adding to a 32% gain last year, Lu said.

CATL Bets

Her top picks include thermal management equipment maker Zhejiang Sanhua Intelligent Controls Co. and Contemporary Amperex, also known as CATL. She also likes lithium miners.

“We are overweight those sectors based on their long-term prospects,” she said. “We don’t think the recent turbulence in the market or a rebound of rates from very low levels will derail the growth.”

York Capital’s Asia team added Chinese hydrogen fuel cell maker Beijing Sinohytec Co. even as valuation concerns prompted it to cut other clean technology holdings, including CATL.

“China wants a national champion in hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, not just in electric vehicles,” He said.

Uranium Rebound

Other hedge funds are turning to uranium as a green investment. York Capital Management also trimmed investments in electric vehicle, battery and solar glass makers, according to Mark He, co-portfolio manager of its $3.4 billion Asia funds.“Clean energy remains one of the most important investment themes for years to come, it’s just that it ran a bit too much last year,” said He, adding the firm may buy the dips later.Electric vehicle makers and their suppliers were among last year’s star stock performers as the new vehicles start to win over consumers with better technology and lower prices. A Bloomberg global hedge fund index gained 10% in 2020.Though many Asia hedge fund managers still like the long-term outlook for sustainable investments, valuations look stretched. Apeiron began to “actively” cut its Tesla holdings for the first time this year, after buying convertible bonds and shares in 2019 when the market was divided on the company.Tesla TumbleTesla’s stock price has tumbled 22% since a Jan. 25 high, as rising global bond yields compounded concerns about runaway stock valuations. Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. has lost 14% since Jan. 8, after the Tesla battery supplier more than tripled in the last 14 months.“This valuation, even though we are a long-term believer, has baked in a lot of optionality other than the automobile business,” Yao said, referring to Tesla. “The premium of such optionality has become too demanding.”Yao’s Apeiron team has instead identified parts suppliers with large global market share that can gain from the “multi-decade” EV trend that’s just beginning, she added, declining to identify them.“The problem is, Tesla is expensive, the whole supply chain is not cheap either,” Yao said. “We are not there to pull the trigger. We may need to wait.”LyGH Capital Pte, a Singapore-based firm with about 40% of its investments in clean energy, last year boosted holdings of EV parts suppliers where competition is less intense, said Grace Lu, chief investment officer of the company overseeing $500 million. More than two-thirds of the 7.5% January return for its hedge fund came from themes ranging from electric vehicles to solar power, adding to a 32% gain last year, Lu said.CATL BetsHer top picks include thermal management equipment maker Zhejiang Sanhua Intelligent Controls Co. and Contemporary Amperex, also known as CATL. She also likes lithium miners.“We are overweight those sectors based on their long-term prospects,” she said. “We don’t think the recent turbulence in the market or a rebound of rates from very low levels will derail the growth.”York Capital’s Asia team added Chinese hydrogen fuel cell maker Beijing Sinohytec Co. even as valuation concerns prompted it to cut other clean technology holdings, including CATL.“China wants a national champion in hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, not just in electric vehicles,” He said.Uranium ReboundOther hedge funds are turning to uranium as a green investment. Tribeca Investment Partners has put about a quarter of its flagship hedge fund into uranium assets, betting that prices will more than double in the coming year, Asia Chief Executive Officer Ben Cleary said. The metal is trading about 80% off a 2007 peak, or about $30 a pound, prompting manufacturers to halt unprofitable mines. Corp. shares have soared the past few days with the stock up nearly 200% at one point from ","content":"
Gamestop Corp. shares have soared the past few days with the stock up nearly 200% at one point from last week (but still down significantly from recent short squeeze highs). We'll look at the unique situations that arise in the options of a highly volatile stock like Gamestop and a few things that might be considered before trading options.

Gamestop: The Expected Move

First, a look at how options are pricing upcoming moves. Here's theOptions AIexpected move chart for Gamestop, with a nearly 30% move being priced into this Friday's close. And a roughly 80% move being priced for the next month. A month that includes an earnings event (unconfirmed):

Gamestop: Call Spreads vs Outright Calls

Using March 19th as an expiry we first looks at bullish spreads, and compare directly to outright calls. With a stock as volatile as Gamestop, calls can be expensive. Because of that, many traders resort to buying far out of the money calls. That demand for upside calls increases volatility in those calls, making them expensive relative to at-the-money calls – a phenomenon known as skew. However, for those that are bullish, this may create an opportunity to utilize spreads rather than buying an outright call. Let's see how.

Here we'll focus on one alternative – using debit spreads to lower the overall cost of a directional trade (while potentially improving the probability of profit of the trade itself by lowering the breakeven level). It does so by selling those relatively expensive out-the-money Calls to help finance the purchase of a nearer to at-the-money Call.

With Gamestop near $105, the March 19th 110/190 Debit Call Spread is roughly $15 and targets the bullish expected move for March 19th. The debit call spread would need the stock to be above $125 on March 19th to be profitable.

As a comparison, the GME March 19th 200 calls are trading $29. That's nearly twice the cost for a 200 call that needs the stock above $229 by March 19th… versus a call spread, that needs the stock above $125. Here's a side by side comparison of those two trades on the Options AI chart. First, the 200 call:

And next, the 145/200 debit call spread:

As you can see, not only is the call spread less expensive, the point at which is becomes profitable to the upside is much closer to where the stock is currently trading. (As indicated by the grey price of the breakeven.)

A note on probability of profit. The probability of profit displayed on these trades is based on the delta being assigned to the breakeven of the trade. The fact that a 200 call in a $105 stock is trading near 50 deltas shows just how distorting an effect Gamestop volatility is having on its options (hard to borrow, skew, retail demand for out-of-the-money calls).

Directional Butterflies vs Outright Puts

High volatility also affects bearish options trades. One of the counter-intuitive aspects of a high volatility stock like Gamestop is that its implied volatility can go up as the stock goes higher and down as the stock goes lower. This is the opposite of how we generally think about volatility. Therefore, buying outright puts carries a risk of collapsing volatility (and therefore collapsing premiums) as the stock goes lower. So, even though the stock is moving in the intended direction, as an option holder you may not be realizing the gains expected.

One way to counter high implied volatility in a stock, especially when having a bearish view, is to be a net seller of option premium. To sell to bullish option traders rather than join bearish option traders. Traditionally that might take the form of selling a Credit Call Spread. But in GME's case that means buying the (expensive) upper strike Call at a higher volatility than the Call that is closer to the money (as described above).

So, one option strategy that can be considered by traders is using a Butterfly. An option trade that is more typically associated with a neutral trading view, but here adapted to actually create a targeted (bearish) directional view.

Here, as an example, is a Butterfly with its center strikes focused at $80 in the stock, with a March 19th expiry:

This 130/80/30 butterfly has breakevens of 115 and 45, meaning the trade is profitable if the stock is between those two prices at March 19th expiry… with a max gain occurring if the stock is at or near $80. We'll look at the unique situations that arise in the options of a highly volatile stock like Gamestop and a few things that might be considered before trading options.Gamestop: The Expected MoveFirst, a look at how options are pricing upcoming moves. Here's theOptions AIexpected move chart for Gamestop, with a nearly 30% move being priced into this Friday's close. And a roughly 80% move being priced for the next month. A month that includes an earnings event (unconfirmed):Gamestop: Call Spreads vs Outright CallsUsing March 19th as an expiry we first looks at bullish spreads, and compare directly to outright calls. First, the 200 call:And next, the 145/200 debit call spread:As you can see, not only is the call spread less expensive, the point at which is becomes profitable to the upside is much closer to where the stock is currently trading. (As indicated by the grey price of the breakeven.)A note on probability of profit. The probability of profit displayed on these trades is based on the delta being assigned to the breakeven of the trade. The fact that a 200 call in a $105 stock is trading near 50 deltas shows just how distorting an effect Gamestop volatility is having on its options (hard to borrow, skew, retail demand for out-of-the-money calls).Directional Butterflies vs Outright PutsHigh volatility also affects bearish options trades. Here, as an example, is a Butterfly with its center strikes focused at $80 in the stock, with a March 19th expiry:This 130/80/30 butterfly has breakevens of 115 and 45, meaning the trade is profitable if the stock is between those two prices at March 19th expiry… with a max gain occurring if the stock is at or near $80. It has the additional dynamic of being short premium, and if the stock stays within its range would see mark to market gains if implied volatility compressed.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":164,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":366370007,"gmtCreate":1614400666709,"gmtModify":1704771577667,"author":{"id":"3571724228863411","authorId":"3571724228863411","name":"BryanTJj","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/34e167e599ec0ff6b241d98f2b4bd016","crmLevel":3,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3571724228863411","authorIdStr":"3571724228863411"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Coinhako?","listText":"Coinhako?","text":"Coinhako?","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/366370007","repostId":"1117820997","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1117820997","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1614337504,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1117820997?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-02-26 19:05","market":"fut","language":"en","title":"Coinbase IPO: 5 things to know about the U.S. cryptocurrency exchange","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1117820997","media":"MarketWatch","summary":"A long-awaited public offering of Coinbase Global Inc. appears near after the cryptocurrency trading","content":"
A long-awaited public offering of Coinbase Global Inc. appears near after the cryptocurrency trading platform filed paperwork with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Thursday.
\n
Coinbase plans to list on the Nasdaq Inc. exchange under the ticker symbol “COIN,” with the aim of employing a nontraditional direct listing to take itself public.
