The core price measure that strips out volatile food and fuel costs, is expected to rise 0.3% from November, or 5.7% year over year.</p><p>The December CPI will be particularly important for influencing the Fed&#39;s decision in its upcoming meeting which concludes February 1, said economists at Pimco. They expect the inflation and lsabor market data will have moderated sufficiently will push the central bank to pause rate hikes before their May meeting.</p><p>&#34;After hiking 50 basis points at the December meeting, we expect the Fed moves to a 25bp hiking pace in early February, and ultimately pause around 5%,&#34; wrote Pimco&#39;s economists Tiffany Wilding and Allison Boxer, in a Tuesday note.</p><p>However, since the Fed&#39;s December meeting, officials have relentlessly signaled the central bank will need to raise interest rates above 5% in order to get inflation to the 2% target, with no interest rate cuts expected this year. Kramer, founder of Mott Capital Management said in a Monday note.</p><p>&#34;Inflation swaps currently see inflation falling below 2.5% by the summer of 2023, which seems hopeful,&#34; Kramer said. &#34;This week&#39;s CPI reading will be essential in maintaining that view and could prove disastrous if CPI comes in hotter than expected, veering market-based inflation expectations off course.&#34;</p><p>The stock market is looking for an &#34;around 5%&#34; increase in December&#39;s core inflation, said Rhys Williams, chief strategist at Spouting Rock Asset Management. &#34;If you get a number in the low four [percent], the stock-market rally will continue. The market is very hyper-focused on data points.&#34;</p><p>U.S. stocks had a positive start to 2023 with hopes that cooling inflation and a potential recession may persuade the central bank to ease off the pace at which it is raising its policy interest rate.</p><p>Williams thinks inflation is coming down but it will not hit the central bank&#39;s 2% mark by summer 2023.</p><p>&#34;I think at some point the markets will realize, &#39;oh we can&#39;t get to 2%,&#34; and then the markets probably do sell off on that. As the crisis unfolded, a group of FTX lawyers and executives moved to strip authority from Bankman-Fried and urged the company’s top leaders to prepare for bankruptcy. For days, Bankman-Fried ignored their warnings and clung to power, seemingly convinced that he could save the firm, despite mounting evidence to the contrary.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/7817164bdd32445ac4f1e4197abf2ee9\" tg-width=\"584\" tg-height=\"389\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Before his empire fell, FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried had agreed to several deals that are now in limbo, including the purchase of Voyager.Credit:Bloomberg</p><p>“The exchanges must be halted immediately,” Ryne Miller, a top FTX lawyer, wrote in an email to Bankman-Fried and other staff November 10. “The founding team is not currently in a cooperative posture.”</p><p>Bankman-Fried eventually relented, stepping down as FTX’s chief executive and authorising the company to file for bankruptcy. Dozens of pages of internal company emails and texts obtained by <i>The New York Times</i> offer a detailed look at those chaotic final days, as messages flew back and forth among FTX officials who seemed to be growing increasingly irritated with the 30-year-old founder.</p><p>Throughout, Bankman-Fried appeared deluded about FTX’s prospects, insisting that he could find a way to keep the company running, the documents show. A day before the bankruptcy filing, he told employees that he was trying to raise new funding, and as recently as last week he said he regretted authorising the bankruptcy.</p><p>The messages reviewed by <i>The Times</i> and interviews with insiders show how a small group of lawyers and executives struggled to get through to Bankman-Fried, even appealing to his father as they pressed their case. While Bankman-Fried was scrambling to line up investors, Miller sent a text to top staff describing the prospect of a fundraise as “0% likelihood.”</p><p>The push and pull continued into the early hours of November 11, when Miller sent a series of messages urging Bankman-Fried to sign papers so the company could file for bankruptcy.</p><p>“Please can you sign the document,” he wrote at 2:29 a.m.</p><p>FTX’s implosion has set off one of the worst upheavals in the history of crypto. Until this month, Bankman-Fried was regarded as one of the few trustworthy figures in a freewheeling, loosely regulated industry. He built a business empire, invested in smaller crypto firms and lobbied aggressively in Washington.</p><p>Now his actions are devastating the industry. Hundreds of thousands of customers stored their funds on FTX, which provided a marketplace for people to buy and sell digital coins; the exchange owes its creditors an estimated $US8 billion ($12 billion). And since the implosion, several major crypto firms with close ties to FTX have come under mounting financial pressure, as fears grow that the collapse could cause other companies to fail. On Monday, the crypto lender BlockFi filed for bankruptcy, citing the fallout from FTX’s disintegration.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/32f2132b7d404efd1ddccd3bc0e6eb7d\" tg-width=\"584\" tg-height=\"389\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>The FTX saga has left the entire industry crypto industry rattled. Justice Department prosecutors are investigating FTX’s downfall, focusing on whether the exchange broke the law by lending its customers’ funds to the hedge fund Alameda Research, which Bankman-Fried also founded and owned. In bankruptcy court, FTX’s new chief executive has harshly criticised Bankman-Fried’s management of the company, calling it a “complete failure of corporate control.”</p><p>Reached by phone Sunday night, Bankman-Fried declined to address the messages that top executives exchanged leading up to the bankruptcy filing. But he said that even after FTX’s collapse, he had found “numerous parties” willing to invest funds. He declined to name any of the possible investors.</p><p>Miller and an FTX spokesman declined to comment.</p><p>The crisis began November 8, when Bankman-Fried announced that a run on deposits at FTX had forced him to sell the company to one of its bitterest rivals, Binance. For about a day, the deal raised the prospect that FTX could survive as part of a giant exchange run by Binance. But after reviewing FTX’s financial records, Binance pulled out of the agreement, citing issues with “corporate due diligence.”</p><p>“Sam, I’m sorry,” Binance’s founder, Changpeng Zhao, wrote in a text message to Bankman-Fried. “But we won’t be able to continue this deal. Way too many issues. CZ.”</p><p>With FTX swiftly unravelling, Miller tried to seize control of the situation. A former lawyer for the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, Miller had served as general counsel of FTX’s U.S. arm since August 2021. While he never belonged to Bankman-Fried’s main circle of advisers in the Bahamas, where FTX was based, he had accompanied the young executive in meetings with regulators in Washington.</p><p>Early in the crisis, Caroline Ellison, the chief executive of Alameda, wrote in a group chat with Miller that she was “kinda worried that everyone is gonna quit/take time off,” adding an emoticon of a sweating face. Miller responded November 9 that FTX needed “a professional manager vested with decision-making authority.”</p><p>That afternoon, Miller asked Bankman-Fried and two other executives to shut down trading on FTX’s platforms</p><p>“Who can turn off the websites?” he asked in a group chat at 4:41 p.m.</p><p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/TWOA.U\">Two</a> minutes later, he got a response from Constance Wang, FTX’s chief operating officer and one of Bankman-Fried’s top lieutenants.</p><p>“Ryne, I love you,” she wrote, “but I don’t want to stop trying yet.”</p><p>Miller and other FTX executives also urged Bankman-Fried to give up some control of his business empire. At one point, Zach Dexter, an executive who worked on FTX’s American business, asked Bankman-Fried to delegate authority over US operations to him and Miller. In an exchange on the messaging system Slack, Bankman-Fried at first appeared to dodge Dexter’s question. In a message to employees November 10, he announced that he was hoping to secure new financing from crypto entrepreneur Justin Sun. FTX had “a lot theoretically in and/or potentially for the raise,” he wrote.</p><p>Behind the scenes, pressure was growing to appoint a new executive to lead the exchange. On the night of November 9, Andrew Dietderich, a lawyer at Sullivan &amp; Cromwell, sent FTX executives the resume of John Jay Ray III, a corporate turnaround expert who had led the unwinding of Enron after the energy company’s collapse in an accounting scandal in 2001.</p><p>“Sam this is an excellent pick and I wholeheartedly hope you sign this tonight,” Dexter wrote in an email on the evening of November 10. “The faster John is in place, the faster the company can resolve issues that require urgent progress.”</p><p>A flurry of emails followed. In a message at 3:38 a.m. on November 11, Miller asked for an update on Bankman-Fried’s decision.</p><p>“I am chatting with Sam,” responded Ken Ziman, a lawyer at the firm Paul Weiss who was representing Bankman-Fried.</p><p>Ten minutes later, Ziman confirmed that Bankman-Fried had signed the document, authorising Ray to take over FTX. The company filed for bankruptcy a few hours later.</p><p>Bankman-Fried was also frustrated. Despite giving up control of FTX, he continued contacting possible investors about new funding for the exchange. In a letter to former colleagues last week, he said he regretted filing for bankruptcy, claiming that “potential interest in billions of dollars of funding came in roughly eight minutes after I signed the Chapter 11 docs.”</p><p>He presented no evidence for that claim, and in any case, FTX was no longer his company to run. In bankruptcy court, FTX’s new chief executive has harshly criticised Bankman-Fried’s management of the company, calling it a “complete failure of corporate control.”Reached by phone Sunday night, Bankman-Fried declined to address the messages that top executives exchanged leading up to the bankruptcy filing. But he said that even after FTX’s collapse, he had found “numerous parties” willing to invest funds. It has also been a volatile stock, and large price swings have not been uncommon.</p><p>In a recent example, Sea&#39;s Q3 of 2022 delighted Wall Street and shares popped 36% the day after the report. Even with some backsliding in the days since, the stock is still up 17% post-earnings.</p><p>For investors who have been considering buying shares, this sudden share price appreciation may make it seem like the opportunity has been missed. I don&#39;t believe that&#39;s the case at all. Let&#39;s dig in and see why.</p><h3>Taking the long view</h3><p>The recent price pop may be intimidating to investors considering buying shares, but a step back shows that even with the post-earnings jump, Sea Limited has had a rough go of it recently.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0ea7ff33fc27282c38918da1feea628f\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"449\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>SE data by YCharts</p><p>As this chart shows, while Sea has beaten the market over the long term, it&#39;s been a wild ride and shares are down drastically since late 2021. In fact, as of this writing, Sea&#39;s stock is down 85% off its high. It&#39;s important to understand that this drop includes the recent stock pop.</p><h3>But how has the business done?</h3><p>Sea Limited operates in three segments, and put simply the company is the preeminent gaming, e-commerce, and fintech company in Southeast Asia. During the market bull run that followed the COVID-19 crash of early 2020, Sea caught investors&#39; attention with its regular triple-digit revenue growth, which helped drive the parabolic share appreciation.</p><p>However, at the same time, Sea was unprofitable and mostly free-cash-flow negative. While this is not uncommon for businesses that are in growth mode, the market began to sour on Sea once the revenue growth slowed.</p><p>What&#39;s interesting about the recently reported Q3 is that the results weren&#39;t overly impressive. Revenue increased 17% year over year and the net loss was $569 million, a slight improvement from a loss of $573 million in Q3 of 2021.</p><p>In fact, while revenue has grown, Sea has seen increasing net losses and continued cash burn over the past three years. The fact that this quarter caused such a share jump is curious considering the report was essentially more of the same.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ef69d4e555394ff727b39835f70afa9d\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"466\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>SE Revenue (TTM) data by YCharts</p><h3>Is the earning jump a signal or noise?</h3><p>So what caused the pop after earnings? Part of the reaction was likely that the company beat analyst guidance on the top and bottom lines, but more likely it was due to management&#39;s commentary on the earnings call.</p><p>As mentioned above, Sea hasn&#39;t made any meaningful progress toward profitability despite impressive revenue growth over several years. According to Sea&#39;s CEO Forrest Li, that could change in the coming quarters.</p><p>Citing the changing macroeconomic environment and his company&#39;s need to adapt in order to survive, Li said, &#34;We have entirely shifted our mindset and focus from growth, to achieving self-sufficiency and profitability as soon as possible without relying on any external funding.&#34;</p><p>While no definite timelines were provided by management, there have been reports of layoffs over the past six months, and the management team will be forgoing salaries until the company reaches self-sufficiency.</p><h3>Is Sea a buy right now?</h3><p>For investors who believe in the long-term potential of Sea&#39;s business segments, a focus on profitability could be good news for long-term shareholder returns. Additionally, from a valuation standpoint, now could be a great time to buy shares and see if that thesis plays out. Sea&#39;s current price-to-sales ratio is 2.5, only slightly above its all-time low of 1.9. That said, the path to profitability could take some time, so it may be worth giving Sea several quarters to prove it can walk the walk.</p><p>Bottom line, the recent 36% stock jump should not play into any investor&#39;s decision about buying shares. Let's dig in and see why.Taking the long viewThe recent price pop may be intimidating to investors considering buying shares, but a step back shows that even with the post-earnings jump, Sea Limited has had a rough go of it recently.SE data by YChartsAs this chart shows, while Sea has beaten the market over the long term, it's been a wild ride and shares are down drastically since late 2021. In fact, as of this writing, Sea's stock is down 85% off its high. It's important to understand that this drop includes the recent stock pop.But how has the business done?Sea Limited operates in three segments, and put simply the company is the preeminent gaming, e-commerce, and fintech company in Southeast Asia. During the market bull run that followed the COVID-19 crash of early 2020, Sea caught investors' attention with its regular triple-digit revenue growth, which helped drive the parabolic share appreciation.However, at the same time, Sea was unprofitable and mostly free-cash-flow negative. While this is not uncommon for businesses that are in growth mode, the market began to sour on Sea once the revenue growth slowed.What's interesting about the recently reported Q3 is that the results weren't overly impressive. Revenue increased 17% year over year and the net loss was $569 million, a slight improvement from a loss of $573 million in Q3 of 2021.In fact, while revenue has grown, Sea has seen increasing net losses and continued cash burn over the past three years. For days, Bankman-Fried ignored their warnings and clung to power, seemingly convinced that he could save the firm, despite mounting evidence to the contrary.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/7817164bdd32445ac4f1e4197abf2ee9\" tg-width=\"584\" tg-height=\"389\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Before his empire fell, FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried had agreed to several deals that are now in limbo, including the purchase of Voyager.Credit:Bloomberg</p><p>“The exchanges must be halted immediately,” Ryne Miller, a top FTX lawyer, wrote in an email to Bankman-Fried and other staff November 10. “The founding team is not currently in a cooperative posture.”</p><p>Bankman-Fried eventually relented, stepping down as FTX’s chief executive and authorising the company to file for bankruptcy. Dozens of pages of internal company emails and texts obtained by <i>The New York Times</i> offer a detailed look at those chaotic final days, as messages flew back and forth among FTX officials who seemed to be growing increasingly irritated with the 30-year-old founder.</p><p>Throughout, Bankman-Fried appeared deluded about FTX’s prospects, insisting that he could find a way to keep the company running, the documents show. A day before the bankruptcy filing, he told employees that he was trying to raise new funding, and as recently as last week he said he regretted authorising the bankruptcy.</p><p>The messages reviewed by <i>The Times</i> and interviews with insiders show how a small group of lawyers and executives struggled to get through to Bankman-Fried, even appealing to his father as they pressed their case. While Bankman-Fried was scrambling to line up investors, Miller sent a text to top staff describing the prospect of a fundraise as “0% likelihood.”</p><p>The push and pull continued into the early hours of November 11, when Miller sent a series of messages urging Bankman-Fried to sign papers so the company could file for bankruptcy.</p><p>“Please can you sign the document,” he wrote at 2:29 a.m.</p><p>FTX’s implosion has set off one of the worst upheavals in the history of crypto. Until this month, Bankman-Fried was regarded as one of the few trustworthy figures in a freewheeling, loosely regulated industry. He built a business empire, invested in smaller crypto firms and lobbied aggressively in Washington.</p><p>Now his actions are devastating the industry. Hundreds of thousands of customers stored their funds on FTX, which provided a marketplace for people to buy and sell digital coins; the exchange owes its creditors an estimated $US8 billion ($12 billion). And since the implosion, several major crypto firms with close ties to FTX have come under mounting financial pressure, as fears grow that the collapse could cause other companies to fail. On Monday, the crypto lender BlockFi filed for bankruptcy, citing the fallout from FTX’s disintegration.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/32f2132b7d404efd1ddccd3bc0e6eb7d\" tg-width=\"584\" tg-height=\"389\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>The FTX saga has left the entire industry crypto industry rattled. Justice Department prosecutors are investigating FTX’s downfall, focusing on whether the exchange broke the law by lending its customers’ funds to the hedge fund Alameda Research, which Bankman-Fried also founded and owned. In bankruptcy court, FTX’s new chief executive has harshly criticised Bankman-Fried’s management of the company, calling it a “complete failure of corporate control.”</p><p>Reached by phone Sunday night, Bankman-Fried declined to address the messages that top executives exchanged leading up to the bankruptcy filing. But he said that even after FTX’s collapse, he had found “numerous parties” willing to invest funds. He declined to name any of the possible investors.</p><p>Miller and an FTX spokesman declined to comment.</p><p>The crisis began November 8, when Bankman-Fried announced that a run on deposits at FTX had forced him to sell the company to one of its bitterest rivals, Binance. For about a day, the deal raised the prospect that FTX could survive as part of a giant exchange run by Binance. But after reviewing FTX’s financial records, Binance pulled out of the agreement, citing issues with “corporate due diligence.”</p><p>“Sam, I’m sorry,” Binance’s founder, Changpeng Zhao, wrote in a text message to Bankman-Fried. “But we won’t be able to continue this deal. Way too many issues. CZ.”</p><p>With FTX swiftly unravelling, Miller tried to seize control of the situation. A former lawyer for the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, Miller had served as general counsel of FTX’s U.S. arm since August 2021. While he never belonged to Bankman-Fried’s main circle of advisers in the Bahamas, where FTX was based, he had accompanied the young executive in meetings with regulators in Washington.</p><p>Early in the crisis, Caroline Ellison, the chief executive of Alameda, wrote in a group chat with Miller that she was “kinda worried that everyone is gonna quit/take time off,” adding an emoticon of a sweating face. That has semiconductor stocks rising on momentum for the legislation.</p><p>Still, this bill has also garnered considerable opposition. Some members have spoken out against it, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.</p><p>Adding to the uncertainty is the fact that some chipmakers feel the bill “disproportionately benefits” companies like <b>Intel</b> (NASDAQ:<b><u>INTC</u></b>). Intel produces its own chips rather than outsourcing to manufacturers. <i>Seeking Alpha</i> reports that companies like <b>Advanced Micro Devices</b> (NASDAQ:<b><u>AMD</u></b>) and <b>Nvidia</b> (NASDAQ:<b><u>NVDA</u></b>) would not benefit from the bill in the same way. However, Intel argues that even chip companies that manufacture offshore “stand to gain a wider range of cost-competitive, US-based manufacturing options.”</p><p>By that logic, the passing of the CHIPS Act will — even if slimmed-down — help propel all chip stocks forward. Despite dipping yesterday in after hours trading, shares are up 8% for the past five days.</p><p>This recent momentum has been driven by both CHIPS Act hype and a positive earnings report from <b>Taiwan Semiconductor</b> (NYSE:<b><u>TSM</u></b>). The success of TSM has already helped restore some investor confidence in the semiconductor industry. Now, the CHIPS act is poised to do the same on an even larger scale.</p><p><i>InvestorPlace</i> contributor Nicolas Chahine likes AMD stock in part because of the company’s leadership. Chahine also believes that, once markets stabilize, a more positive narrative will carry chip stocks back to profitable levels. The CHIPS Act could be the perfect catalyst to accomplish something like that.</p><h2>Intel (INTC)</h2><p>If the CHIPS Act issues a new chip stocks boom, Intel will more than likely lead the charge. As the leading U.S. chip manufacturer, the tech giant certainly stands to gain from the legislation. What’s more, even as INTC stock rises on mounting anticipation, Intel is still significantly undervalued for a blue-chip stock, making it a highly tempting play.</p><p>The reasons to bet on Intel don’t stop at the pending bill, either. Intel is also expanding rapidly. <i>InvestorPlace</i> contributor Faisal Humayun notes that, for 2022, “Intel has guided for net capital expenditure of $27 billion.” Humayun also points out that the company recently “acquired land to build a manufacturing plant in Ohio.” Lastly, back in March, Intel announced a 33 billion euro expansion in Europe.</p><h2>Chip Stocks to Buy: Nvidia (NVDA)</h2><p>Nvidia tends to dominate coverage of chip stocks. In part, the company has risen to prominence for its metaverse applications. Now, though, the potential chip boom may push this Wall Street darling up even further.</p><p>Recently, Nvidia received a significant endorsement; Paul Pelosi, the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, purchased 20,000 shares of NVDA stock. Given the timing, this implies he has reason to believe Nvidia may benefit from the bill. That’s even despite arguments that names like Nvidia will <i>not</i> benefit nearly as much from the CHIPS Act.</p><p>Experts have also speculated that NVDA stock is a buy ahead of its upcoming earnings report. The stock has tremendous potential due to its applications for both metaverse tech and data centers. Its revenues increased by 21% YoY to €4 billion, which was slightly below estimates, while its net income was around €1 billion and EPS was €2.52 (+41% YoY), ahead of sell-side expectations.</p>\n<p>During the quarter, ASML’s net systems sales amounted to €2.9 billion, while its Installed Base Management sales were €1.1 billion. This revenue from Installed Based Management was above the company’s guidance of around €900 million and is justified by the current situation in the semiconductor industry (the chip shortage) that is pushing customers to software upgrades to improve productivity of the systems.</p>\n<p>In this last quarter, ASML has recognized revenue fornineEUV units, compared tosevenunits in the previous quarter, even though it has delivered 10 units to customers and will recognize revenue for the remaining unit in the next quarter. EUV revenue represented 45% of its system sales in the quarter, compared to 36% in the previous quarter, and shows that EUV should be its major growth source in the next few quarters.</p>\n<p>At this pace, ASML should increase the number of EUV units delivered in 2020 compared to the previous year (it delivered 31 EUV units), but it may miss my expectation of about 38 units delivered this year if deliveries do not ramp a little bit up in the next two quarters.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5a48a69a3ba61e82df997470af977ae5\" tg-width=\"1042\" tg-height=\"252\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Source: ASML.</span></p>\n<p>ASML’s gross margin of 50.9% was above its prior guidance, mainly due to software upgrades that weren’t expected. Its gross margin outlook for the full year is between 51-52%, compared to 48.6% reported in 2020, another support for earnings growth in coming quarters.</p>\n<p>Regarding its net bookings, they were close to €8.3 billion, of which €4.9 billion is related to EUV systems, which is a reflection of the strong demand that currently exists in the semiconductor industry. This represents a great increase in bookings compared to the previous quarter (€4.7 billion in Q1), which is not totally surprising considering the recent announcements by its major customers&nbsp;<b>TSMC</b>(TSM) and&nbsp;<b>Intel</b>(INTC) of new factories and increased capex plans for the next couple of years, of which lithography machines are critical elements.</p>\n<p>Beyond that, while the majority of orders for EUV units come from Logic customers, this quarter ASML had the greatest order intake from Memory customers, most likely from&nbsp;<b>Micron Technology</b>(MU) and&nbsp;<b>SK Hynix</b>(OTC:HXSCF), which is important to diversify its customer base that still is relatively concentrated regarding EUV units. Moreover, investors should also be aware that ASML is not selling EUV units in China, which could represent another growth source in the future if, eventually, the U.S.-China political relationships improve, even though I think that is unlikely at this stage.</p>\n<p>Going forward, the company raised its 2021 guidance and now expects net revenue growth of about 35% (previous expectations were for 30% annual revenue growth) and a gross margin between 51-52%. ASML has also guided for EUV revenue growth of about 35% YoY, which corresponds to some 39-40 units, thus the company is expecting to deliver a higher number of units in the second half of the year than in the previous six months, justified by its push to improve its manufacturing and supply chain capabilities.</p>\n<p>As&nbsp;I’ve discussed in a previous article, ASML was somewhat constrained to grow its EUV production and has made some efforts to increase production in the coming years. This was confirmed in the earnings call, with the company saying that it expects to deliver some 55 units in 2022, growing to over 60 units in 2023.</p>\n<p>I’ve forecasted in that previous analysis that ASML would grow its EUV sales by aroundfiveunits per year after 2022 and reach unit sales of around 70 units by 2025. This now seems to be a conservative estimate and ASML may easily beat my expectations of 70 units and around €11 billion in revenue from EUV by 2025, as demand for its systems is clearly very strong right now.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ed697ade2047cb8381d563726e9a0864\" tg-width=\"600\" tg-height=\"396\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Source: ASML and author’s calculations.</span></p>\n<p><b>Capital Returns &amp; Investor Day</b></p>\n<p>Beyond strong growth and profitability, another positive factor for a higher share price has been its capital return policy, given that ASML has a very good history both through dividends and share buybacks.</p>\n<p>This trend is not expected to change much over the long term and was reinforced recently. Indeed, as&nbsp;I’ve predicted in a previous article, the company increased its share buyback program to €9 billion, to be completed by the end of 2023, substituting immediately the previous program.</p>\n<p>This is a strong increase from its previous share buyback program of €6 billion that was to be completed this year (ASML completed €5.2 billion of this program), showing that ASML has a solid financial position that enables it to invest in the future of its business through R&amp;D and capex, but also return significant amounts of capital to shareholders.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/84129202a0103e8396a273c5740e57a1\" tg-width=\"500\" tg-height=\"223\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Source: ASML.</span></p>\n<p>ASML is delivering impressive results and returning even more capital to shareholders, leading its stock to reach consecutive new all-time highs during the past few months. Despite this, there is still upside and this may become more evident in its upcoming investor day, where the company will update investors about its future scenarios regarding revenues and earnings.</p>\n<p>Indeed, ASML has scheduled an investor day on 29 September 2021, where it will certainly raise its medium-term targets compared to the targets set in 2018. Its current revenue target is for a range of €15-24 billion in annual revenues by 2025, which is clearly outdated, considering that ASML should reach revenues of about €19 billion this year.</p>\n<p>As I’ve said in previous articles, I expect ASML to increase its revenue target to a medium-level of around €30 billion or higher by 2025, a much higher level than current sell-side consensus' expectation in 2025 (€26.1 billion). Therefore, this investor day could be another catalyst for a higher share price in the short term, as sell-side estimates will most likely increase following this event. This could be an important driver for a higher share price in the next 3-6 months.</p>\n<p><b>Conclusion</b></p>\n<p>ASML has reported another good quarter with the strong order intake being the most impressive factor in my opinion. This is clearly a very bullish factor for ASML’s business in the next few years and a good support for higher revenue expectations in the medium term. Its revenues increased by 21% YoY to €4 billion, which was slightly below estimates, while its net income was around €1 billion and EPS was €2.52 (+41% YoY), ahead of sell-side expectations.\nDuring the quarter, ASML’s net systems sales amounted to €2.9 billion, while its Installed Base Management sales were €1.1 billion. This revenue from Installed Based Management was above the company’s guidance of around €900 million and is justified by the current situation in the semiconductor industry (the chip shortage) that is pushing customers to software upgrades to improve productivity of the systems.\nIn this last quarter, ASML has recognized revenue fornineEUV units, compared tosevenunits in the previous quarter, even though it has delivered 10 units to customers and will recognize revenue for the remaining unit in the next quarter. EUV revenue represented 45% of its system sales in the quarter, compared to 36% in the previous quarter, and shows that EUV should be its major growth source in the next few quarters.\nAt this pace, ASML should increase the number of EUV units delivered in 2020 compared to the previous year (it delivered 31 EUV units), but it may miss my expectation of about 38 units delivered this year if deliveries do not ramp a little bit up in the next two quarters.\nSource: ASML.\nASML’s gross margin of 50.9% was above its prior guidance, mainly due to software upgrades that weren’t expected. Its gross margin outlook for the full year is between 51-52%, compared to 48.6% reported in 2020, another support for earnings growth in coming quarters.\nRegarding its net bookings, they were close to €8.3 billion, of which €4.9 billion is related to EUV systems, which is a reflection of the strong demand that currently exists in the semiconductor industry. This represents a great increase in bookings compared to the previous quarter (€4.7 billion in Q1), which is not totally surprising considering the recent announcements by its major customers TSMC(TSM) and Intel(INTC) of new factories and increased capex plans for the next couple of years, of which lithography machines are critical elements.\nBeyond that, while the majority of orders for EUV units come from Logic customers, this quarter ASML had the greatest order intake from Memory customers, most likely from Micron Technology(MU) and SK Hynix(OTC:HXSCF), which is important to diversify its customer base that still is relatively concentrated regarding EUV units. Moreover, investors should also be aware that ASML is not selling EUV units in China, which could represent another growth source in the future if, eventually, the U.S.-China political relationships improve, even though I think that is unlikely at this stage.\nGoing forward, the company raised its 2021 guidance and now expects net revenue growth of about 35% (previous expectations were for 30% annual revenue growth) and a gross margin between 51-52%. ASML has also guided for EUV revenue growth of about 35% YoY, which corresponds to some 39-40 units, thus the company is expecting to deliver a higher number of units in the second half of the year than in the previous six months, justified by its push to improve its manufacturing and supply chain capabilities.\nAs I’ve discussed in a previous article, ASML was somewhat constrained to grow its EUV production and has made some efforts to increase production in the coming years. This was confirmed in the earnings call, with the company saying that it expects to deliver some 55 units in 2022, growing to over 60 units in 2023.\nI’ve forecasted in that previous analysis that ASML would grow its EUV sales by aroundfiveunits per year after 2022 and reach unit sales of around 70 units by 2025. This now seems to be a conservative estimate and ASML may easily beat my expectations of 70 units and around €11 billion in revenue from EUV by 2025, as demand for its systems is clearly very strong right now.\nSource: ASML and author’s calculations.\nCapital Returns & Investor Day\nBeyond strong growth and profitability, another positive factor for a higher share price has been its capital return policy, given that ASML has a very good history both through dividends and share buybacks.\nThis trend is not expected to change much over the long term and was reinforced recently. Indeed, as I’ve predicted in a previous article, the company increased its share buyback program to €9 billion, to be completed by the end of 2023, substituting immediately the previous program.\nThis is a strong increase from its previous share buyback program of €6 billion that was to be completed this year (ASML completed €5.2 billion of this program), showing that ASML has a solid financial position that enables it to invest in the future of its business through R&D and capex, but also return significant amounts of capital to shareholders.\nSource: ASML.\nASML is delivering impressive results and returning even more capital to shareholders, leading its stock to reach consecutive new all-time highs during the past few months. Despite this, there is still upside and this may become more evident in its upcoming investor day, where the company will update investors about its future scenarios regarding revenues and earnings.\nIndeed, ASML has scheduled an investor day on 29 September 2021, where it will certainly raise its medium-term targets compared to the targets set in 2018. Its current revenue target is for a range of €15-24 billion in annual revenues by 2025, which is clearly outdated, considering that ASML should reach revenues of about €19 billion this year.\nAs I’ve said in previous articles, I expect ASML to increase its revenue target to a medium-level of around €30 billion or higher by 2025, a much higher level than current sell-side consensus' expectation in 2025 (€26.1 billion). Therefore, this investor day could be another catalyst for a higher share price in the short term, as sell-side estimates will most likely increase following this event. This could be an important driver for a higher share price in the next 3-6 months.\nConclusion\nASML has reported another good quarter with the strong order intake being the most impressive factor in my opinion. This is clearly a very bullish factor for ASML’s business in the next few years and a good support for higher revenue expectations in the medium term. The prices paid index, driven higher by the current demand/supply imbalance, soared to its highest level since 1979, according to ISM.</p>\n<p>“The employment and manufacturing data released today supported the idea of continued growth but at a decelerated rate,” Carter added.</p>\n<p>Friday’s hotly anticipated jobs report is expected to show payrolls growing by 700,000 and unemployment inching down to 5.7%. Let&#39;s dig in and see why.</p><h3>Taking the long view</h3><p>The recent price pop may be intimidating to investors considering buying shares, but a step back shows that even with the post-earnings jump, Sea Limited has had a rough go of it recently.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0ea7ff33fc27282c38918da1feea628f\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"449\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>SE data by YCharts</p><p>As this chart shows, while Sea has beaten the market over the long term, it&#39;s been a wild ride and shares are down drastically since late 2021. In fact, as of this writing, Sea&#39;s stock is down 85% off its high. It&#39;s important to understand that this drop includes the recent stock pop.</p><h3>But how has the business done?</h3><p>Sea Limited operates in three segments, and put simply the company is the preeminent gaming, e-commerce, and fintech company in Southeast Asia. During the market bull run that followed the COVID-19 crash of early 2020, Sea caught investors&#39; attention with its regular triple-digit revenue growth, which helped drive the parabolic share appreciation.</p><p>However, at the same time, Sea was unprofitable and mostly free-cash-flow negative. While this is not uncommon for businesses that are in growth mode, the market began to sour on Sea once the revenue growth slowed.</p><p>What&#39;s interesting about the recently reported Q3 is that the results weren&#39;t overly impressive. Revenue increased 17% year over year and the net loss was $569 million, a slight improvement from a loss of $573 million in Q3 of 2021.</p><p>In fact, while revenue has grown, Sea has seen increasing net losses and continued cash burn over the past three years. The fact that this quarter caused such a share jump is curious considering the report was essentially more of the same.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ef69d4e555394ff727b39835f70afa9d\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"466\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>SE Revenue (TTM) data by YCharts</p><h3>Is the earning jump a signal or noise?</h3><p>So what caused the pop after earnings? Part of the reaction was likely that the company beat analyst guidance on the top and bottom lines, but more likely it was due to management&#39;s commentary on the earnings call.</p><p>As mentioned above, Sea hasn&#39;t made any meaningful progress toward profitability despite impressive revenue growth over several years. According to Sea&#39;s CEO Forrest Li, that could change in the coming quarters.</p><p>Citing the changing macroeconomic environment and his company&#39;s need to adapt in order to survive, Li said, &#34;We have entirely shifted our mindset and focus from growth, to achieving self-sufficiency and profitability as soon as possible without relying on any external funding.&#34;</p><p>While no definite timelines were provided by management, there have been reports of layoffs over the past six months, and the management team will be forgoing salaries until the company reaches self-sufficiency.</p><h3>Is Sea a buy right now?</h3><p>For investors who believe in the long-term potential of Sea&#39;s business segments, a focus on profitability could be good news for long-term shareholder returns. Additionally, from a valuation standpoint, now could be a great time to buy shares and see if that thesis plays out. Sea&#39;s current price-to-sales ratio is 2.5, only slightly above its all-time low of 1.9. That said, the path to profitability could take some time, so it may be worth giving Sea several quarters to prove it can walk the walk.</p><p>Bottom line, the recent 36% stock jump should not play into any investor&#39;s decision about buying shares. During the market bull run that followed the COVID-19 crash of early 2020, Sea caught investors' attention with its regular triple-digit revenue growth, which helped drive the parabolic share appreciation.However, at the same time, Sea was unprofitable and mostly free-cash-flow negative. While this is not uncommon for businesses that are in growth mode, the market began to sour on Sea once the revenue growth slowed.What's interesting about the recently reported Q3 is that the results weren't overly impressive. Revenue increased 17% year over year and the net loss was $569 million, a slight improvement from a loss of $573 million in Q3 of 2021.In fact, while revenue has grown, Sea has seen increasing net losses and continued cash burn over the past three years. Part of the reaction was likely that the company beat analyst guidance on the top and bottom lines, but more likely it was due to management's commentary on the earnings call.As mentioned above, Sea hasn't made any meaningful progress toward profitability despite impressive revenue growth over several years. According to Sea's CEO Forrest Li, that could change in the coming quarters.Citing the changing macroeconomic environment and his company's need to adapt in order to survive, Li said, \"We have entirely shifted our mindset and focus from growth, to achieving self-sufficiency and profitability as soon as possible without relying on any external funding.\"While no definite timelines were provided by management, there have been reports of layoffs over the past six months, and the management team will be forgoing salaries until the company reaches self-sufficiency.Is Sea a buy right now?For investors who believe in the long-term potential of Sea's business segments, a focus on profitability could be good news for long-term shareholder returns. Additionally, from a valuation standpoint, now could be a great time to buy shares and see if that thesis plays out. Sea's current price-to-sales ratio is 2.5, only slightly above its all-time low of 1.9.
