Thanks in large part to Reddit users piling on, Clover's shares have soared in recent weeks.</p>\n<p>Don't think that the waters are safe to jump aboard the bandwagon for Clover Health yet, however.&nbsp;Here's why this hot Reddit stock just gave investors an ominous warning.</p>\n<h2>Brutal honesty</h2>\n<p>All publicly traded companies want investors to buy their shares. Buying tends to beget more buying, which pushes the stock price up. It's rare that any company warns investors not to buy its stock. But that's exactly what Clover Health did recently.</p>\n<p>Companies that plan to issue additional shares file a prospectus with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). This prospectus gives potential investors a lot of information about the business and lays out the key reasons why they might want to buy the new shares.</p>\n<p>Clover Health filed such a prospectus earlier this year, outlining its intent to issue additional Class B shares. These shares don't have the same level of voting rights as its Class A shares. Last week, the company submitted an amendment to the SEC for this prospectus. And that amendment contained a brutally honest message for potential investors.</p>\n<p>The company acknowledged that its recent gains could be due to a short squeeze. Because of the potential for an additional short squeeze and its aftermath, Clover Health gave an unusually stark warning to investors: \"Under the circumstances, we caution you against investing in our Class B common stock, unless you are prepared to incur the risk of losing all or a substantial portion of your investment.\" It also noted, \"Investors that purchase shares of our Class A common stock during a short squeeze may lose a significant portion of their investment.\"</p>\n<h2>No fear?</h2>\n<p>Clover Health explained clearly what could happen with both its Class A and Class B shares. The company stated that if another short squeeze happens, once short-sellers cover their positions or if investors otherwise think the short squeeze has run its course, its stock price could fall quickly.</p>\n<p>You might think that such an ominous warning would scare off many investors. Nope. Instead, it produced an opposite effect. Last week, shares of Clover Health soared by a double-digit percentage immediately after the company's amended prospectus with the serious warning was submitted to the SEC.</p>\n<p>This reaction might seem counterintuitive. After all, Clover Health informed investors in no uncertain terms about the risks they face with buying the stock. So why did the shares of the company surge instead of sink? I think there are different reasons for different investors.</p>\n<p>Some truly believe in Clover Health and are willing to hold onto the stock regardless of what happens over the short term. Others are fully aware that the gains generated by a short squeeze could evaporate quickly but think they'll be able to sell in time to still make a big profit. Unfortunately, there could also be some who are new to investing and didn't pay attention to or didn't understand Clover Health's cautionary message.</p>\n<h2>Business vs. stock</h2>\n<p>It's always wise to think of buying a stock as buying a part of a business. That's exactly what you're doing when you buy shares of Clover Health or any other company. When the underlying business is strong and has great prospects, you don't have to be concerned about short-term volatility with the share price.</p>\n<p>However, there are times when share prices get way out of alignment with the prospects of the underlying business. Short squeezes can often make this happen. In these cases, it's especially important to be careful in buying a stock. Sure, you're still buying a part of a business -- but you can pay a lot more than the business is actually worth.</p>\n<p>In my view, there are several reasons to like Clover Health's underlying business. The company has an intriguing technology that physicians use. It's expanding into the original Medicare market, a move that could boost sales tremendously. Clover Health has a visionary management team.</p>\n<p>But buying a stock that's a short squeeze candidate is risky if you aren't ready, willing, and able to sell shares immediately once the short squeeze ends. Buying tends to beget more buying, which pushes the stock price up. It's rare that any company warns investors not to buy its stock. But that's exactly what Clover Health did recently.\nCompanies that plan to issue additional shares file a prospectus with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). This prospectus gives potential investors a lot of information about the business and lays out the key reasons why they might want to buy the new shares.\nClover Health filed such a prospectus earlier this year, outlining its intent to issue additional Class B shares. These shares don't have the same level of voting rights as its Class A shares. Last week, the company submitted an amendment to the SEC for this prospectus. And that amendment contained a brutally honest message for potential investors.\nThe company acknowledged that its recent gains could be due to a short squeeze. Because of the potential for an additional short squeeze and its aftermath, Clover Health gave an unusually stark warning to investors: \"Under the circumstances, we caution you against investing in our Class B common stock, unless you are prepared to incur the risk of losing all or a substantial portion of your investment.\" It also noted, \"Investors that purchase shares of our Class A common stock during a short squeeze may lose a significant portion of their investment.\"\nNo fear?\nClover Health explained clearly what could happen with both its Class A and Class B shares. Based on an April report from eMarketer, the company effectively controls $0.40 of every $1 spent online in the United States. It's also pivoted its online retail popularity into signing up more than 200 million people to its Prime program worldwide. The fees Amazon collects from Prime help it to undercut its competition on price. And it certainly doesn't hurt that Prime members tend to spend many multiples more than non-Prime shoppers during the course of the year.</p>\n<p>But it's the company's cloud infrastructure service, Amazon Web Services (AWS), that has truly budded into a star. Since the operating margins associated with cloud infrastructure are considerably higher than what Amazon nets from retail and advertising, AWS' growth is leading to a surge in operating cash flow. If investors were to continue to pay the midpoint of Amazon's operating cash flow multiple over the past decade, it could hit $10,000 a share by 2025.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b18b49b2b35da2fc49e0a83b883d1c22\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2>Bristol Myers Squibb</h2>\n<p>Pharmaceutical stocks are money machines, and none looks to be more attractive on a valuation basis than <b>Bristol Myers Squibb</b> (NYSE:BMY).</p>\n<p>One reason to be excited about this drug developer is its organic growth potential. Eliquis, which was co-developed with <b>Pfizer</b>, has blossomed into the world's leading oral anticoagulant, with sales expected to surpass $10 billion in 2021. Meanwhile, dozens of additional clinical trials are underway for cancer immunotherapy Opdivo, which generated $7 billion in sales last year. This offers plenty of opportunity to expand Opdivo's label and pump up its pricing power.</p>\n<p>Another reason Bristol Myers Squibb is such an intriguing stock is its November 2019 acquisition of cancer and immunology company Celgene. Buying Celgene brought the blockbuster multiple-myeloma drug Revlimid into the fold. Revlimid has sustainably grown its annual sales by a double-digit percentage for more than a decade, with label expansion, longer duration of use, and pricing power all playing a role. This key treatment, which topped $12 billion in sales last year, is protected from a full onslaught of generic competition until early 2026. That means Bristol Myers will be rolling in the dough for another five years, at minimum.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1b152e369d7c967dcbc926192ee888c1\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"531\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2>Mastercard</h2>\n<p>Everyone seems to be looking for the smartest recovery play from the pandemic. Payment processor <b>Mastercard</b> (NYSE:MA) might well be the safest way to take advantage of a steady uptick in consumer and enterprise spending.</p>\n<p>Mastercard isn't a cheap stock by any means -- at 36 times Wall Street's forward-year earnings consensus -- but it benefits from a simple numbers game. While economic contractions and recessions are inevitable, these periods of turbulence tend to be short-lived. By comparison, economic expansions often last many years. Buying into Mastercard allows investors to take full advantage of these long periods of economic expansion and robust spending. Plus, it doesn't hurt that Mastercard has the second-highest share of credit-card network purchase volume in the U.S., the leading market for consumption.</p>\n<p>Investors can also sleep easy with the understanding that Mastercard strictly sticks to payment facilitation. Even though some of its peers also lend, and are therefore able to generate interest income and fees during bull markets, Mastercard has avoided becoming a lender. It's something you'll truly appreciate when a recession strikes. Whereas most financial stocks will be forced to set aside capital to cover credit or loan delinquencies, Mastercard won't have to. This is a big reason it bounces back from recessions quicker than most financial stocks.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e4e1a1fe028efa4c966b66ef2cd466f5\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2>Teva Pharmaceutical Industries</h2>\n<p>If you have an appetite for turnaround plays, brand-name and generic-drug developer <b>Teva Pharmaceutical Industries</b> (NYSE:TEVA) is the stock to buy hand over fist for the second half of 2021. Like Amazon, it's a stock that was added to Berkshire Hathaway's portfolio by either Combs or Weschler and not Buffett.</p>\n<p>While there's no denying that Teva has its fair share of hurdles to overcome, the company's turnaround-focused CEO, Kare Schultz, has been a blessing. Since taking the helm less than four years ago, Schultz has helped shave off more than $10 billion in net debt, and he's overseen the reduction of roughly $3 billion in annual operating expenses. There's more work to do to improve Teva's balance sheet, but the company is very clearly on much firmer ground than it was back in 2016-2017.</p>\n<p>Schultz also has the potential to play peacemaker for a number of outstanding lawsuits targeting Teva's role in the opioid crisis. If this litigation can be resolved with minimal cash outlay, Teva's valuation could soar. At just 4 times the company's projected earnings in 2021, Teva is about as cheap as a healthcare stock can get.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/44a30c4dfd6886a29e22d3c6558c3e56\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2>Bank of America</h2>\n<p>Lastly, bank stock <b>Bank of America</b> (NYSE:BAC) has the look of a company that can be confidently bought hand over fist for the second half of 2021.</p>\n<p>For much of the past decade, the Federal Reserve has kept interest rates at or near historic lows. That's meant less in the way of interest income for banks. But the latest update from the nation's central bank suggests that interest rates could begin creeping up in 2023, a year earlier than previously forecast. Bank of America is the most interest-sensitive money-center bank. According to its first-quarter investor presentation, BofA would generate $8.3 billion in net interest income on a 100-basis-point shift in the interest rate yield curve. Translation: Bank of America's profits should rocket higher beginning in 2023-2024.</p>\n<p>At the same time, BofA has done an outstanding job of controlling its costs and improving its operating efficiency. Investments in digitization have resulted in higher mobile app and digital banking use, which is allowing the company to consolidate some of its branches. Eliquis, which was co-developed with Pfizer, has blossomed into the world's leading oral anticoagulant, with sales expected to surpass $10 billion in 2021. Meanwhile, dozens of additional clinical trials are underway for cancer immunotherapy Opdivo, which generated $7 billion in sales last year. Payment processor Mastercard (NYSE:MA) might well be the safest way to take advantage of a steady uptick in consumer and enterprise spending.\nMastercard isn't a cheap stock by any means -- at 36 times Wall Street's forward-year earnings consensus -- but it benefits from a simple numbers game. While economic contractions and recessions are inevitable, these periods of turbulence tend to be short-lived. By comparison, economic expansions often last many years. Buying into Mastercard allows investors to take full advantage of these long periods of economic expansion and robust spending. Plus, it doesn't hurt that Mastercard has the second-highest share of credit-card network purchase volume in the U.S., the leading market for consumption.\nInvestors can also sleep easy with the understanding that Mastercard strictly sticks to payment facilitation. Even though some of its peers also lend, and are therefore able to generate interest income and fees during bull markets, Mastercard has avoided becoming a lender. It's something you'll truly appreciate when a recession strikes. Whereas most financial stocks will be forced to set aside capital to cover credit or loan delinquencies, Mastercard won't have to. Like Amazon, it's a stock that was added to Berkshire Hathaway's portfolio by either Combs or Weschler and not Buffett.\nWhile there's no denying that Teva has its fair share of hurdles to overcome, the company's turnaround-focused CEO, Kare Schultz, has been a blessing. Since taking the helm less than four years ago, Schultz has helped shave off more than $10 billion in net debt, and he's overseen the reduction of roughly $3 billion in annual operating expenses. There's more work to do to improve Teva's balance sheet, but the company is very clearly on much firmer ground than it was back in 2016-2017.\nSchultz also has the potential to play peacemaker for a number of outstanding lawsuits targeting Teva's role in the opioid crisis. If this litigation can be resolved with minimal cash outlay, Teva's valuation could soar. But the latest update from the nation's central bank suggests that interest rates could begin creeping up in 2023, a year earlier than previously forecast. Bank of America is the most interest-sensitive money-center bank. According to its first-quarter investor presentation, BofA would generate $8.3 billion in net interest income on a 100-basis-point shift in the interest rate yield curve. Translation: Bank of America's profits should rocket higher beginning in 2023-2024.\nAt the same time, BofA has done an outstanding job of controlling its costs and improving its operating efficiency. Investments in digitization have resulted in higher mobile app and digital banking use, which is allowing the company to consolidate some of its branches. That's the rate at which the company <i>raises</i> its dividend. Over the course of the past 10 years, JPMorgan's quarterly payout has improved from $0.25 to $0.90 per share, growing at an annualized clip of 13.7%. That's huge.</p>\n<p>Be aware that this diversified banking and finance name trimmed its dividend pretty significantly in the wake of the subprime mortgage meltdown, and could certainly do so again should the company find itself in similar circumstances. After all, about half of its revenue is ultimately linked to interest rates.</p>\n<p>Even with inflationary pressures rising, however, a recreation of those unusual underpinnings isn't very likely. Then, interest rates were peeling back from above-average highs, sapping loan margins in addition to piling on costs linked to soured loans. Now, conversely, rates are hovering near record lows and poised to rise in a way that actually makes lending more profitable. A recession curbs the demand for loans, but shouldn't outright kill that demand unless economic weakness turns downright cataclysmic. In the meantime, the other half of JPMorgan's business comes from things like asset management, credit cards, investment banking, and even consumer banking. These businesses are pretty resilient even if they don't exactly thrive in a lethargic environment.</p>\n<h2>2. Hewlett Packard Enterprise</h2>\n<p><b>Dividend yield: 3.1%</b></p>\n<p>Would it surprise you to know that technology company <b>Hewlett Packard Enterprise</b> (NYSE:HPE) is a dividend stock? Well, it is, and a good <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> too. Sure, you can find higher yields, but they're not easy to find within the tech sector.</p>\n<p>This company is, of course, the business and enterprise-facing half of the 2016 split of what used to just be known as Hewlett Packard, with the other consumer-facing half going its separate way. Then in 2017, Hewlett Packard Enterprise spun off its services business to merge it with Computer Sciences Corp., further narrowing its portfolio.</p>\n<p>They've been smart moves. A tighter focus on each organization's core customer has ultimately produced greater success than was being achieved as a bigger, broader outfit.</p>\n<p>That's not always been easy to see, granted. Revenue and earnings have been just as apt to fall as to rise since the company as we know it today first took shape. The thing is, even after adjusting for <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a>-off, non-operating expenses, Hewlett Packard Enterprise has never really struggled to make its quarterly dividend payment. The current annualized payout of $0.48 per share is only a fraction of the $1.88 (give or take a few cents) per share the company expects to report on a non-GAAP earnings basis for the current fiscal year.</p>\n<p>Hewlett Packard Enterprise may not be a major growth machine, but surprisingly enough, it's evolving into a picture of consistent progress as the cloud computing and edge computing markets mature.</p>\n<h2>3. The Coca-Cola Company</h2>\n<p><b>Dividend yield: 3%</b></p>\n<p>Finally, add<b> Coca-Cola</b> (NYSE:KO) to your shortlist of dividend stocks to consider adding to your portfolio.</p>\n<p>Like most other consumer-oriented companies, Coca-Cola's been crimped by the coronavirus pandemic. Its challenges were more logistical in their nature than linked to a lack of demand. The ultimate impact is the same though. Last year's top line tumbled 11%, clipping earnings by a similar degree.</p>\n<p>Yes, the beverage behemoth will work its way out of the pandemic-prompted slump. As fellow Fool writer Parkev Tatevosian points out, Coca-Cola is apt to gain lost market share as the world reopens for business since consumers are more likely to drink a Coke outside of their home than they are within it.</p>\n<p>That's not necessarily the top reason to step into this trade while the yield's at a respectable 3%, however. More compelling is the fact that the noise -- and impact -- of the pandemic obscured the upside of moves that Coca-Cola has been making since 2014, and in a big way since 2017. Simply put, Coke has been stepping back from the bottling business by selling bottling operations back to franchisees so it can focus more on licensing. This diminishes revenue, but in that franchising and licensing is a (much) higher-margin business, the end result is greater overall profits.</p>\n<p>This new and improved fiscal profile was just starting to come into view in 2020 when COVID-19 wrecked it. That's the rate at which the company <i>raises</i> its dividend. Over the course of the past 10 years, JPMorgan's quarterly payout has improved from $0.25 to $0.90 per share, growing at an annualized clip of 13.7%. That's huge.</p>\n<p>Be aware that this diversified banking and finance name trimmed its dividend pretty significantly in the wake of the subprime mortgage meltdown, and could certainly do so again should the company find itself in similar circumstances. After all, about half of its revenue is ultimately linked to interest rates.</p>\n<p>Even with inflationary pressures rising, however, a recreation of those unusual underpinnings isn't very likely. Then, interest rates were peeling back from above-average highs, sapping loan margins in addition to piling on costs linked to soured loans. Now, conversely, rates are hovering near record lows and poised to rise in a way that actually makes lending more profitable. A recession curbs the demand for loans, but shouldn't outright kill that demand unless economic weakness turns downright cataclysmic. In the meantime, the other half of JPMorgan's business comes from things like asset management, credit cards, investment banking, and even consumer banking. These businesses are pretty resilient even if they don't exactly thrive in a lethargic environment.</p>\n<h2>2. Hewlett Packard Enterprise</h2>\n<p><b>Dividend yield: 3.1%</b></p>\n<p>Would it surprise you to know that technology company <b>Hewlett Packard Enterprise</b> (NYSE:HPE) is a dividend stock? Well, it is, and a good <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> too. Sure, you can find higher yields, but they're not easy to find within the tech sector.</p>\n<p>This company is, of course, the business and enterprise-facing half of the 2016 split of what used to just be known as Hewlett Packard, with the other consumer-facing half going its separate way. Then in 2017, Hewlett Packard Enterprise spun off its services business to merge it with Computer Sciences Corp., further narrowing its portfolio.</p>\n<p>They've been smart moves. A tighter focus on each organization's core customer has ultimately produced greater success than was being achieved as a bigger, broader outfit.</p>\n<p>That's not always been easy to see, granted. Revenue and earnings have been just as apt to fall as to rise since the company as we know it today first took shape. The thing is, even after adjusting for <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a>-off, non-operating expenses, Hewlett Packard Enterprise has never really struggled to make its quarterly dividend payment. The current annualized payout of $0.48 per share is only a fraction of the $1.88 (give or take a few cents) per share the company expects to report on a non-GAAP earnings basis for the current fiscal year.</p>\n<p>Hewlett Packard Enterprise may not be a major growth machine, but surprisingly enough, it's evolving into a picture of consistent progress as the cloud computing and edge computing markets mature.</p>\n<h2>3. The Coca-Cola Company</h2>\n<p><b>Dividend yield: 3%</b></p>\n<p>Finally, add<b> Coca-Cola</b> (NYSE:KO) to your shortlist of dividend stocks to consider adding to your portfolio.</p>\n<p>Like most other consumer-oriented companies, Coca-Cola's been crimped by the coronavirus pandemic. Its challenges were more logistical in their nature than linked to a lack of demand. The ultimate impact is the same though. Last year's top line tumbled 11%, clipping earnings by a similar degree.</p>\n<p>Yes, the beverage behemoth will work its way out of the pandemic-prompted slump. As fellow Fool writer Parkev Tatevosian points out, Coca-Cola is apt to gain lost market share as the world reopens for business since consumers are more likely to drink a Coke outside of their home than they are within it.</p>\n<p>That's not necessarily the top reason to step into this trade while the yield's at a respectable 3%, however. More compelling is the fact that the noise -- and impact -- of the pandemic obscured the upside of moves that Coca-Cola has been making since 2014, and in a big way since 2017. Simply put, Coke has been stepping back from the bottling business by selling bottling operations back to franchisees so it can focus more on licensing. This diminishes revenue, but in that franchising and licensing is a (much) higher-margin business, the end result is greater overall profits.</p>\n<p>This new and improved fiscal profile was just starting to come into view in 2020 when COVID-19 wrecked it. This prospectus gives potential investors a lot of information about the business and lays out the key reasons why they might want to buy the new shares.</p>\n<p>Clover Health filed such a prospectus earlier this year, outlining its intent to issue additional Class B shares. These shares don't have the same level of voting rights as its Class A shares. Last week, the company submitted an amendment to the SEC for this prospectus. And that amendment contained a brutally honest message for potential investors.</p>\n<p>The company acknowledged that its recent gains could be due to a short squeeze. Because of the potential for an additional short squeeze and its aftermath, Clover Health gave an unusually stark warning to investors: \"Under the circumstances, we caution you against investing in our Class B common stock, unless you are prepared to incur the risk of losing all or a substantial portion of your investment.\" It also noted, \"Investors that purchase shares of our Class A common stock during a short squeeze may lose a significant portion of their investment.\"</p>\n<h2>No fear?</h2>\n<p>Clover Health explained clearly what could happen with both its Class A and Class B shares. The company stated that if another short squeeze happens, once short-sellers cover their positions or if investors otherwise think the short squeeze has run its course, its stock price could fall quickly.</p>\n<p>You might think that such an ominous warning would scare off many investors. Nope. Instead, it produced an opposite effect. Last week, shares of Clover Health soared by a double-digit percentage immediately after the company's amended prospectus with the serious warning was submitted to the SEC.</p>\n<p>This reaction might seem counterintuitive. After all, Clover Health informed investors in no uncertain terms about the risks they face with buying the stock. So why did the shares of the company surge instead of sink? I think there are different reasons for different investors.</p>\n<p>Some truly believe in Clover Health and are willing to hold onto the stock regardless of what happens over the short term. Others are fully aware that the gains generated by a short squeeze could evaporate quickly but think they'll be able to sell in time to still make a big profit. Unfortunately, there could also be some who are new to investing and didn't pay attention to or didn't understand Clover Health's cautionary message.</p>\n<h2>Business vs. stock</h2>\n<p>It's always wise to think of buying a stock as buying a part of a business. That's exactly what you're doing when you buy shares of Clover Health or any other company. When the underlying business is strong and has great prospects, you don't have to be concerned about short-term volatility with the share price.</p>\n<p>However, there are times when share prices get way out of alignment with the prospects of the underlying business. Short squeezes can often make this happen. In these cases, it's especially important to be careful in buying a stock. Sure, you're still buying a part of a business -- but you can pay a lot more than the business is actually worth.</p>\n<p>In my view, there are several reasons to like Clover Health's underlying business. The company has an intriguing technology that physicians use. It's expanding into the original Medicare market, a move that could boost sales tremendously. Clover Health has a visionary management team.</p>\n<p>But buying a stock that's a short squeeze candidate is risky if you aren't ready, willing, and able to sell shares immediately once the short squeeze ends. The company stated that if another short squeeze happens, once short-sellers cover their positions or if investors otherwise think the short squeeze has run its course, its stock price could fall quickly.\nYou might think that such an ominous warning would scare off many investors. Nope. Instead, it produced an opposite effect. Last week, shares of Clover Health soared by a double-digit percentage immediately after the company's amended prospectus with the serious warning was submitted to the SEC.\nThis reaction might seem counterintuitive. After all, Clover Health informed investors in no uncertain terms about the risks they face with buying the stock. So why did the shares of the company surge instead of sink? I think there are different reasons for different investors.\nSome truly believe in Clover Health and are willing to hold onto the stock regardless of what happens over the short term. Others are fully aware that the gains generated by a short squeeze could evaporate quickly but think they'll be able to sell in time to still make a big profit. Unfortunately, there could also be some who are new to investing and didn't pay attention to or didn't understand Clover Health's cautionary message.\nBusiness vs. stock\nIt's always wise to think of buying a stock as buying a part of a business. That's exactly what you're doing when you buy shares of Clover Health or any other company. When the underlying business is strong and has great prospects, you don't have to be concerned about short-term volatility with the share price.\nHowever, there are times when share prices get way out of alignment with the prospects of the underlying business. Based on an April report from eMarketer, the company effectively controls $0.40 of every $1 spent online in the United States. It's also pivoted its online retail popularity into signing up more than 200 million people to its Prime program worldwide. The fees Amazon collects from Prime help it to undercut its competition on price. And it certainly doesn't hurt that Prime members tend to spend many multiples more than non-Prime shoppers during the course of the year.</p>\n<p>But it's the company's cloud infrastructure service, Amazon Web Services (AWS), that has truly budded into a star. Since the operating margins associated with cloud infrastructure are considerably higher than what Amazon nets from retail and advertising, AWS' growth is leading to a surge in operating cash flow. Eliquis, which was co-developed with <b>Pfizer</b>, has blossomed into the world's leading oral anticoagulant, with sales expected to surpass $10 billion in 2021. Meanwhile, dozens of additional clinical trials are underway for cancer immunotherapy Opdivo, which generated $7 billion in sales last year. This offers plenty of opportunity to expand Opdivo's label and pump up its pricing power.</p>\n<p>Another reason Bristol Myers Squibb is such an intriguing stock is its November 2019 acquisition of cancer and immunology company Celgene. Buying Celgene brought the blockbuster multiple-myeloma drug Revlimid into the fold. Revlimid has sustainably grown its annual sales by a double-digit percentage for more than a decade, with label expansion, longer duration of use, and pricing power all playing a role. This key treatment, which topped $12 billion in sales last year, is protected from a full onslaught of generic competition until early 2026. Payment processor <b>Mastercard</b> (NYSE:MA) might well be the safest way to take advantage of a steady uptick in consumer and enterprise spending.</p>\n<p>Mastercard isn't a cheap stock by any means -- at 36 times Wall Street's forward-year earnings consensus -- but it benefits from a simple numbers game. While economic contractions and recessions are inevitable, these periods of turbulence tend to be short-lived. By comparison, economic expansions often last many years. Buying into Mastercard allows investors to take full advantage of these long periods of economic expansion and robust spending. Plus, it doesn't hurt that Mastercard has the second-highest share of credit-card network purchase volume in the U.S., the leading market for consumption.</p>\n<p>Investors can also sleep easy with the understanding that Mastercard strictly sticks to payment facilitation. Even though some of its peers also lend, and are therefore able to generate interest income and fees during bull markets, Mastercard has avoided becoming a lender. It's something you'll truly appreciate when a recession strikes. Whereas most financial stocks will be forced to set aside capital to cover credit or loan delinquencies, Mastercard won't have to. Like Amazon, it's a stock that was added to Berkshire Hathaway's portfolio by either Combs or Weschler and not Buffett.</p>\n<p>While there's no denying that Teva has its fair share of hurdles to overcome, the company's turnaround-focused CEO, Kare Schultz, has been a blessing. Since taking the helm less than four years ago, Schultz has helped shave off more than $10 billion in net debt, and he's overseen the reduction of roughly $3 billion in annual operating expenses. There's more work to do to improve Teva's balance sheet, but the company is very clearly on much firmer ground than it was back in 2016-2017.</p>\n<p>Schultz also has the potential to play peacemaker for a number of outstanding lawsuits targeting Teva's role in the opioid crisis. If this litigation can be resolved with minimal cash outlay, Teva's valuation could soar. That's meant less in the way of interest income for banks. But the latest update from the nation's central bank suggests that interest rates could begin creeping up in 2023, a year earlier than previously forecast. Bank of America is the most interest-sensitive money-center bank. According to its first-quarter investor presentation, BofA would generate $8.3 billion in net interest income on a 100-basis-point shift in the interest rate yield curve. Translation: Bank of America's profits should rocket higher beginning in 2023-2024.</p>\n<p>At the same time, BofA has done an outstanding job of controlling its costs and improving its operating efficiency. Investments in digitization have resulted in higher mobile app and digital banking use, which is allowing the company to consolidate some of its branches.
