It closed 2.5% higher at $182.01 and with a market capitalization of $2.99 trillion. The advance came on a broadly positive session for stocks, where Apple and Amazon.com Inc. both contributed to the Nasdaq 100 Index outperforming.

The iPhone maker’s share price has climbed steadily for years, leaving it up more than 200% since Covid first sent the world into lockdown in early 2020 and underlined the centrality of technology for work, education, entertainment, and keeping connected.

Apple’s rally has come alongside steady revenue growth and bets that key products, along with new offerings such as virtual reality headsets and autonomous electric vehicles, have a strong long-term outlook.

“I never thought I’d see a $3 trillion market cap, but it really speaks to Apple’s prospects over the next five to 10 years,” said Patrick Burton, co-portfolio manager of the MainStay Winslow Large Cap Growth Fund, which holds about 2.75 million Apple shares. “We feel very good about the outlook, and continue to see meaningful opportunities ahead, with a stable iPhone franchise and growth drivers from both services and new products.”

The stock first reached $1 trillion in value in mid-2018, and achieved a $2 trillion valuation in August 2020. While it was the first U.S. company to surpass that level, Saudi Aramco was the first $2 trillion company overall. Apple’s size means it has a pronounced influence on the overall equity market; its weight within the S&P 500 Index is about 7%.

Ever since it first became the world’s most valuable stock in 2011 -- when its market cap was under $340 billion and it comprised about 3.3% of the S&P 500 -- Apple has rarely been far from the title. It briefly fell behind Microsoft Corp. in October, after warning about the impact supply-chain issues would have on its holiday quarter, though that second-place status was short-lived. Over the past month, the stock has risen more than 12%, compared with a 3.6% rise in Microsoft, which now has a valuation above $2.51 trillion.

High Premium

Despite the optimistic outlook, there are risks to Apple’s forward march.

The company is facing the toughest regulatory atmosphere in its history, with governments bearing down in the U.S. and India over its App Store practices and dealings with third-party developers. Any laws impacting Apple’s practices could limit its income from Services, now one of the company’s most important segments.

From a product perspective, Apple is also hitting snags and contending with new rivals. The company’s upcoming virtual and augmented reality headsets will vie with gear from Meta Platforms Inc., formerly Facebook. It closed 2.5% higher at $182.01 and with a market capitalization of $2.99 trillion. The advance came on a broadly positive session for stocks, where Apple and Amazon.com Inc. both contributed to the Nasdaq 100 Index outperforming. The iPhone maker’s share price has climbed steadily for years, leaving it up more than 200% since Covid first sent the world into lockdown in early 2020 and underlined the centrality of technology for work, education, entertainment, and keeping connected.Apple’s rally has come alongside steady revenue growth and bets that key products, along with new offerings such as virtual reality headsets and autonomous electric vehicles, have a strong long-term outlook.“I never thought I’d see a $3 trillion market cap, but it really speaks to Apple’s prospects over the next five to 10 years,” said Patrick Burton, co-portfolio manager of the MainStay Winslow Large Cap Growth Fund, which holds about 2.75 million Apple shares. “We feel very good about the outlook, and continue to see meaningful opportunities ahead, with a stable iPhone franchise and growth drivers from both services and new products.”The stock first reached $1 trillion in value in mid-2018, and achieved a $2 trillion valuation in August 2020. While it was the first U.S. company to surpass that level, Saudi Aramco was the first $2 trillion company overall. Apple’s size means it has a pronounced influence on the overall equity market; its weight within the S&P 500 Index is about 7%.Ever since it first became the world’s most valuable stock in 2011 -- when its market cap was under $340 billion and it comprised about 3.3% of the S&P 500 -- Apple has rarely been far from the title. It briefly fell behind Microsoft Corp. in October, after warning about the impact supply-chain issues would have on its holiday quarter, though that second-place status was short-lived. Over the past month, the stock has risen more than 12%, compared with a 3.6% rise in Microsoft, which now has a valuation above $2.51 trillion.High PremiumDespite the optimistic outlook, there are risks to Apple’s forward march. Its long-in-development car project has also hit roadblocks with ever-changing goals and key departures.Apple’s advance also has the stock trading at a premium to its average historical multiple, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The stock is 4.5% above the average analyst price target, suggesting that while nearly 80% of firms recommend buying it, most view it as fairly valued.“It isn’t particularly cheap right now, so I wouldn’t back up the truck to buy, but it deserves to be somewhat expensive,” said Rhys Williams, chief strategist at Spouting Rock Asset Management. “So long as the iPhone cycle is intact, it is unlikely to significantly underperform the market, and if it does come out with an electric vehicle, then the stock would look cheap because that’s a huge potential market.”","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":384,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9009776062,"gmtCreate":1640819791310,"gmtModify":1676533543659,"author":{"id":"3572421475654774","authorId":"3572421475654774","name":"uuro","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/7a0bb3b9dcec9d78afc0fb6538079c54","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3572421475654774","authorIdStr":"3572421475654774"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Great","listText":"Great","text":"Great","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9009776062","repostId":"2195466435","repostType":2,"repost":{"id":"2195466435","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1640814752,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2195466435?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-12-30 05:52","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Dow, S&P Close at Record Highs as Omicron Worries Ease","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2195466435","media":"Reuters","summary":"Dec 29 (Reuters) - The Dow and S&P 500 closed at all-time highs on Wednesday on a boost from retaile","content":"

Dec 29 (Reuters) - The Dow and S&P 500 closed at all-time highs on Wednesday on a boost from retailers including Walgreens and Nike, as investors shrugged off concerns on the spreading Omicron variant.

The Dow has now risen six straight trading days, marking the longest streak of gains since a seven-session run from March 5 to March 15 this year.

Walgreens Boots Alliance and Nike Inc rose 1.59% and 1.42% respectively against the backdrop of recent reports suggesting holiday sales were strong for U.S. retailers.

Data on Wednesday showed the U.S. trade deficit in goods mushroomed to the widest ever in November as imports of consumer goods shot to a record, as the coronavirus pandemic has limited spending by Americans on services.

Some early studies pointing to a reduced risk of hospitalization in Omicron cases have eased some investors concerns over the travel disruptions and powered the S&P 500 to record highs this week.

"The market started to recognize that the Omicron variant was in a strange way good news, because it will burn itself out more rapidly because it's easily transmissible, but it's less likely to overwhelm hospitals," said Jay Hatfield, founder and chief executive of Infrastructure Capital Management in New York. This is, after all, an event for software developers.

Last year,Apple (ticker: AAPL) also used the event to unveil the M1 processor, a chip designed by the company that has replacedIntelparts in some MacBooks and iPads. By the time the announcement came, the launch had been widely anticipated by analysts and media.

There’s not nearly as much buzz heading into this year’s event, but Apple still manages to provide surprises. Expect a few this year.

Wedbush analyst Dan Ives expects the focus to be on the usual range of operating-system updates, including iOS 15, which he thinks will include new privacy protections, notification and lock-screen updates, and some new features in iMessage. WWDC is generally used to unveil updates to the company’s various operating systems—MacOS for Macs, iOS for the iPhone, WatchOS for Apple Watch, tvOS for Apple TV set-top boxes, and iPadOS, a variation of iOS for iPads.New hardware announcements are possible, but the exception to the rule. This is, after all, an event for software developers.Last year,Apple (ticker: AAPL) also used the event to unveil the M1 processor, a chip designed by the company that has replacedIntelparts in some MacBooks and iPads. By the time the announcement came, the launch had been widely anticipated by analysts and media. There’s not nearly as much buzz heading into this year’s event, but Apple still manages to provide surprises. Expect a few this year.Wedbush analyst Dan Ives expects the focus to be on the usual range of operating-system updates, including iOS 15, which he thinks will include new privacy protections, notification and lock-screen updates, and some new features in iMessage. As Ives noted, the most recent update to the iPhone software,iOS 14.5, includes an opt-in feature for tracking consumer behavior that has infuriated Facebook(FB) and other companies that rely on that data to target advertising.Ives also thinks Apple will unveil new MacBook Pros at both 14-inch and 16-inch screen sizes, both driven by the M1 chip. Famed skeptic Rod Hall, at Goldman Sachs, finally threw in the towel after the Cupertino company delivered a record-breaking fiscal second quarter. Wolfe Research’s Jeff Kvaal maintains his sell rating, but at a high price target of $125 that suggests minimal downside risk.
\n
Pierre Ferragu goes deeper. In his view, the best of Apple’s iPhone upgrade wave, the so-called 5G super cycle, has been left in the rearview mirror. The point was reinforced by the analyst’s views that the Cupertino company’s upcoming smartphone will probably be a “12S model” with limited updates.
\n
In addition to an underwhelming 2021 iPhone model in the pipeline, Mr. Ferragu’s bearish thesis is further illustrated by his quote below:
\n
\n “The key question is how things shape up for next year, as the current super cycle has brought forward demand […] and consumers spend less on consumer electronics as the economy re-opens.”\n
\n
Plugging some numbers
\n
New Street offered some figures to back up the 30% downside risk. According to the analyst, 2022 iPhone shipments would land at 190 million units, at the mid-point of the guidance range.
\n
If ASPs (average selling prices) remain elevated, as they have been in the first two quarters of fiscal 2021, the bear case points at next-year iPhone revenues of around $150 billion. At these levels, iPhone sales would have increased by a modest 5% per year through the COVID-19 crisis and pandemic recovery, against what I estimate to be nearly 20% consensus growth.
\n
Considering how relevant the iPhone still is to Apple’s financial performance (50% of total company sales in fiscal 2020), low growth prospects would likely lead to valuation compression. The double whammy would come in the form of consensus-lagging EPS, a combination of which would be needed to support New Street’s $90 share price target.
\n
The Apple Maven’s opinion
\n
One thing is clear: stock prices can swing wildly and correct sharply. Apple stock is no stranger to painful pullbacks. Shares have dipped by 40% or more from the peak (12% currently, plus the nearly 30% decline expected by New Street) several times before, as the chart below suggests.
\n
Figure 2: Maximum drawdown in AAPL since IPO.
\n
But quite a bit would have to go wrong, in my opinion, for AAPL to return to $90 – levels not seen since the thick of the pandemic. From higher ASPs in 2021 to increased sales well past the peak of the stay-at-home buying spree, the iPhone seems to be experiencing a secular, not temporary increase in demand.
\n
Weakness in iPhone would likely need to come along muted results in other segments as well. Could Apple stock dip about 30% from current levels, as one Wall Street analyst argues?\nAnew bear has emerged from its cave. New Street’s Pierre Ferragu believes that Apple stock is now a sell, downgraded from his previous neutral stance, and that shares could sink by nearly 30% from current levels to only $90.\nThe Apple Maven gets inside the mind of this Wall Street skeptic to better understand the potential risks of investing in Apple stock today.\nFigure 1: Wall Street bear.\n“12S cycle” coming up?\nNew Street is effectively the only true Apple bear on Wall Street today. Famed skeptic Rod Hall, at Goldman Sachs, finally threw in the towel after the Cupertino company delivered a record-breaking fiscal second quarter. Wolfe Research’s Jeff Kvaal maintains his sell rating, but at a high price target of $125 that suggests minimal downside risk.\nPierre Ferragu goes deeper. In his view, the best of Apple’s iPhone upgrade wave, the so-called 5G super cycle, has been left in the rearview mirror. The point was reinforced by the analyst’s views that the Cupertino company’s upcoming smartphone will probably be a “12S model” with limited updates.\nIn addition to an underwhelming 2021 iPhone model in the pipeline, Mr. Ferragu’s bearish thesis is further illustrated by his quote below:\n\n “The key question is how things shape up for next year, as the current super cycle has brought forward demand […] and consumers spend less on consumer electronics as the economy re-opens.”\n\nPlugging some numbers\nNew Street offered some figures to back up the 30% downside risk. According to the analyst, 2022 iPhone shipments would land at 190 million units, at the mid-point of the guidance range.\nIf ASPs (average selling prices) remain elevated, as they have been in the first two quarters of fiscal 2021, the bear case points at next-year iPhone revenues of around $150 billion. The double whammy would come in the form of consensus-lagging EPS, a combination of which would be needed to support New Street’s $90 share price target.\nThe Apple Maven’s opinion\nOne thing is clear: stock prices can swing wildly and correct sharply. Apple stock is no stranger to painful pullbacks. Shares have dipped by 40% or more from the peak (12% currently, plus the nearly 30% decline expected by New Street) several times before, as the chart below suggests.\nFigure 2: Maximum drawdown in AAPL since IPO.\nBut quite a bit would have to go wrong, in my opinion, for AAPL to return to $90 – levels not seen since the thick of the pandemic. From higher ASPs in 2021 to increased sales well past the peak of the stay-at-home buying spree, the iPhone seems to be experiencing a secular, not temporary increase in demand.\nWeakness in iPhone would likely need to come along muted results in other segments as well.
In other words, Apple’s troubles would have to be broader, rather than product specific. To me, this would only be possible under two key assumptions:
\n
\n
The post-pandemic “return to normal” will, indeed, cause discretionary spending to shift meaningfully away from tech devices and services – which I am skeptical about;
\n
The economy will endure a double-dip recession that cannot be remedied as well by fiscal and monetary stimuli –something that I also believe to be of low probability.
\n
\n
At the end of the day, AAPL $90 is possible – just not highly likely, in my view.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Apple Stock To Sink 30%?
