Discussing the daily trading volumes of bitcoin, JPM notes that a large fraction of Bitcoin are locked up in illiquid entities (liquidity sinks),<b>\"with more than 90% not changing hands in more than a year\" while roughly 80% - and rising - are held by wallets with light turnover.&nbsp; This means that a paltry 5-10% of all bitcoin in circulation has traded in the past year.</b></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ce30e31759284bfbf1d8923cb4149bfc\" tg-width=\"725\" tg-height=\"534\"></p>\n<p>Another way of putting it:<b>an asset with a $600 billion market cap has a float of just $30 billion.</b>Which is remarkable as it means that<b>no whales</b>sold bitcoin when it hit its all time high of $65,000.<b>And if they didn't sell then, they certainly won't sell now when it's half that price.</b></p>\n<p>This, more than anything else, explains why bitcoin - an asset whose market cap was more than a $1 trillion as recently as April - is so extremely volatile: with the vast majority of bitcoin locked up or held by whale accounts who rarely if ever trade, the marginal price setter of bitcoin are odd lots - a burst of trading in fractions of a bitcoin, where the momentum in many cases is ignited and magnified by HFTs who then shape the movement of the crypto in hopes of hitting the max pain stop loss positions for other cryptos, and where as a result of such a unique trading environment, the price of bitcoin can swing 10%, 15% , or even 20% or more every day.</p>\n<p>The question we have is during liquidation pukes like the one observed recently, how much of the newly released bitcoin are gobbled up by existing or new whales. Judging by the gray line in the chart above, the answer is a record amount.</p>\n<p>Which means that we are now in the<i>\"weak hands\" shake out and whale accumulation</i>phase. And once the new generation of whales has bought enough, that's when the next squeeze higher will take place, sending the crypto currency and its peers to fresh all time highs. Discussing the daily trading volumes of bitcoin, JPM notes that a large fraction of Bitcoin are locked up in illiquid entities (liquidity sinks),\"with more than 90% not changing hands in more than a year\" while roughly 80% - and rising - are held by wallets with light turnover.  This means that a paltry 5-10% of all bitcoin in circulation has traded in the past year.\n\nAnother way of putting it:an asset with a $600 billion market cap has a float of just $30 billion.Which is remarkable as it means thatno whalessold bitcoin when it hit its all time high of $65,000.And if they didn't sell then, they certainly won't sell now when it's half that price.\nThis, more than anything else, explains why bitcoin - an asset whose market cap was more than a $1 trillion as recently as April - is so extremely volatile: with the vast majority of bitcoin locked up or held by whale accounts who rarely if ever trade, the marginal price setter of bitcoin are odd lots - a burst of trading in fractions of a bitcoin, where the momentum in many cases is ignited and magnified by HFTs who then shape the movement of the crypto in hopes of hitting the max pain stop loss positions for other cryptos, and where as a result of such a unique trading environment, the price of bitcoin can swing 10%, 15% , or even 20% or more every day.\nThe question we have is during liquidation pukes like the one observed recently, how much of the newly released bitcoin are gobbled up by existing or new whales. And once the new generation of whales has bought enough, that's when the next squeeze higher will take place, sending the crypto currency and its peers to fresh all time highs. What everybody wants to know is whether the panel finally has gotten around to talking about talking about moving away from its ubereasy monetary policy.</p>\n<p>We all know that the FOMC won’t take any substantive steps in terms of its massive securities purchases, which are still running at $120 billion a month. As for its key federal-funds rate target, that’s stuck at 0% to 0.25% (although there’s an outside chance of technical tweaking of some other Fed-administered rates to address the billions in excess cash sloshing around in the money markets).</p>\n<p>We’ll be looking for what’s in the FOMC’s formal policy statement and the panel’s updated Summary of Economic Projections, which will include the amalgam of the committee members’ guesses on key economic gauges, such as gross domestic product, inflation, and unemployment. Most likely, when that is posted&nbsp;on the Fed’s website&nbsp;at 2 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time on Wednesday, most folks will probably head straight for the FOMC’s guesses on the fed-funds rate, and specifically when liftoff from near-zero is finally expected.</p>\n<p>The “dot plot”—or graph of the FOMC members’ consensus guesses—puts the first hike all the way out past 2023. That seems a very long-term forecast, and as John Maynard Keynes famously pointed out, in the long run we’re all dead. Some Fed watchers, such as J.P. Morgan’s chief U.S. economist, Michael Feroli, look for the dots to show a 2023 liftoff.</p>\n<p>The markets, however, already had been pricing in one or more fed-funds rate hikes by 2023. But concurrent with the previously discussed slide in longer-term bond yields, the interest-rate futures markets have effectively priced out one of those short-term rate increases. In addition, the derivatives market now sees the fed-funds rate peaking under 2%, some 0.4 of a percentage point lower than what it had priced in earlier this year, according to analysts for&nbsp;Natixis.</p>\n<p>Long before making any rate hikes, the Fed will begin to lessen its accommodation by slowing its current pace of securities purchases, which consist of $80 billion of Treasuries and $40 billion of agency mortgage-backed securities every month. The trillions that the Federal Reserve and other central banks have created have gone a long way to boost the values of assets, which rose by $5 trillion, to $136.9 trillion, in the first quarter, according to new Fed data released this past week. What everybody wants to know is whether the panel finally has gotten around to talking about talking about moving away from its ubereasy monetary policy.\nWe all know that the FOMC won’t take any substantive steps in terms of its massive securities purchases, which are still running at $120 billion a month. As for its key federal-funds rate target, that’s stuck at 0% to 0.25% (although there’s an outside chance of technical tweaking of some other Fed-administered rates to address the billions in excess cash sloshing around in the money markets).\nWe’ll be looking for what’s in the FOMC’s formal policy statement and the panel’s updated Summary of Economic Projections, which will include the amalgam of the committee members’ guesses on key economic gauges, such as gross domestic product, inflation, and unemployment. Most likely, when that is posted on the Fed’s website at 2 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time on Wednesday, most folks will probably head straight for the FOMC’s guesses on the fed-funds rate, and specifically when liftoff from near-zero is finally expected.\nThe “dot plot”—or graph of the FOMC members’ consensus guesses—puts the first hike all the way out past 2023. That seems a very long-term forecast, and as John Maynard Keynes famously pointed out, in the long run we’re all dead. Some Fed watchers, such as J.P. Morgan’s chief U.S. economist, Michael Feroli, look for the dots to show a 2023 liftoff.\nThe markets, however, already had been pricing in one or more fed-funds rate hikes by 2023. But concurrent with the previously discussed slide in longer-term bond yields, the interest-rate futures markets have effectively priced out one of those short-term rate increases. A confluence of factors could make the next couple of quarters bumpy enough to give long-term investors a chance to scoop up shares of the tech juggernaut at an even cheaper price.</p>\n<p>To be sure, the long-term opportunity hasn’t changed. If oil was the crucial commodity of the past,semiconductors are the critical commodity of the future—and TSMC is a leader in making the advanced chips needed for 5G, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and electric vehicles.</p>\n<p>Founded in 1987, the Taiwanese company accounts for roughly 60% of outsourced chip manufacturing and 90% of the profits. TSMC has made significant investment in its foundries, helping it manufacture ever-denser chips that generate more power while using less energy. RivalIntel(INTC) has struggled to match that success.</p>\n<p>Even the lone analyst with a Sell rating on TSMC stock sings the company’s praises: “This is an A-plus company with solid management,” says Mehdi Hosseini, senior equity analyst at Susquehanna Financial Group, who has covered TSMC for more than 20 years. But Hosseini says he can’t ignore the near-term challenges and the pricey stock.</p>\n<p>Despite the recent selloff, TSMC shares are still up 110% over the past 12 months, and they trade at 27 times earnings estimates for the next 12 months, well above the stock’s five-year average of 19.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f343f4fd4554dcc3a5fc6842713fd34c\" tg-width=\"685\" tg-height=\"429\">That elevated multiple doesn’t offer much cushion if and when challenges arise. Some money managers caution that near-term demand may not live up to analysts’ rosy forecasts for the next couple of quarters. Also, increased spending by TSMC and its rivals to meet a surge in demand could dent profit margins.</p>\n<p>Meanwhile, escalating geopolitical tensions put Taiwan, a self-ruled democracy that China considers a province, and its most important company in a fraught position.</p>\n<p>Daiwa Capital Markets analyst Rick Hsu is concerned that the chip shortage—which has hobbled automotive plants and sent gamers scrambling to find new consoles—could create inventory-related issues in the first half of 2022.</p>\n<p>Hsu told<i>Barron’s</i>in an email that TSMC’s stock needs to shed another 15%, to about $100, to adequately reflect the current risk profile. The stock recently closed at $118.</p>\n<p>Lackluster demand related to smartphones, which accounts for 45% of revenue, could also lead to disappointment. With TSMC profit margins already near a peak, future growth will require a boost in sales. That could be challenging in the near term. Apple’s iPhone 13 is unlikely to offer a major catalyst, while Chinese smartphone vendors don’t currently have the killer app needed to drive upgrades, Hosseini says.</p>\n<p>“You can’t just give it multiple expansion because it’s a great company. You need earnings power,” Hosseini says, noting that the company trades at a significant premium to theS&amp;P 500 index.He has a price target of $85, putting him far outside the consensus. Wall Street’s average price target on TSMC is $141.</p>\n<p>Analysts, on average, expect TSMC’s earnings to increase 14% to $4.06 a share this year, and 16% to $4.69 a share next year, with revenue growing 16% to $55.8 billion this year, and another 16% next year.</p>\n<p><b>Chips on the Table</b></p>\n<p>Shares of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing have returned an annual average of 25% over the last decade.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5615dee32fa47048e8747447b01257c9\" tg-width=\"663\" tg-height=\"272\"></p>\n<p>In April, TSMC CEO C.C. Wei told investors of a structural increase in demand, with megatrends around 5G and high-performance computing applications fueling strong demand for several years to come.</p>\n<p>Even so, Wall Street’s estimates may be too optimistic, says Laura Geritz, CEO of Rondure Global Advisors, which owns TSMC shares. She notes that growth at the company was boosted last year as quarantined families loaded up on PCs, gadgets, gaming consoles, and home appliances, all of which require more and more chips.</p>\n<p>Those buying patterns could quickly change as the pandemic eases and central banks begin to taper their support of the economy.</p>\n<p>“I think you will get a better shot,” Geritz says of buying TSMC stock. “It’s expensive when you strip away what could be fiscal and stay-at-home economics.”</p>\n<p>One of the reasons that investors are drawn to TSMC is its deep and impressive list of customers. But that advantage is becoming increasingly costly to maintain as companies—and governments—push for more geographically diverse supply chains.</p>\n<p>In the U.S., the Senate just passed a sweeping $250 billion China package that includes funding and incentives for producing more chips closer to home, along with calls for increased funding of research and development more broadly to help the U.S. maintain its technological edge against China.</p>\n<p>The Biden administration just completed a supply-chain review of critical materials—such as chips—and is pushing to spur more production at home and make the U.S. less vulnerable to global supply-chain disruptions.</p>\n<p>The industry is already reacting. Intel recently unveiled plans to spend $20 billion on two new manufacturing plants in Arizona, whileSamsung Electronics(005930.Korea) plans to invest $116 billion over the next decade, which includes a new chip factory in the U.S. Meanwhile, TSMC has said it plans to invest $100 billion over the next three years—including building two new factories of its own in Arizona.</p>\n<p>The companies’ increased spending is probably required to maintain a competitive edge, and the expenditure could address some of the Biden administration concerns by moving some production back to the U.S.</p>\n<p>In the near term, though, the spending creates financial risk. Longtime TSMC investor Andrew Foster earlier this year sold the TSMC stake he held in his $2.1 billionSeafarer Overseas Growth and Incomefund (SFGIX). He cites concerns about the company’s increased capital expenditure and its potential impact on free cash flow and the dividend, which has a yield of 1.8%.</p>\n<p>Current valuations don’t account for those risks, according to Foster, who says he may reconsider if the stock gets cheaper.</p>\n<p>In an email, TSMC representative Nina Kao said the company’s investment in Arizona is intended to support customers’ long-term capacity needs and isn’t related to political pressure. The company, Kao added, is confident that the Arizona factory will be profitable.</p>\n<p>The biggest risk to TSMC shares is China. The country is intent on unification, and tensions have escalated with China increasing military activity in the South China Sea region. Friction is likely to intensify: The U.S. has said it willsoon hold investment and trade talks with Taiwan,as the administration looks to strengthen Taipei.</p>\n<p>While policy watchers don’t see an armed conflict on the horizon, therisk of an accident is rising as military activity mounts. How to quantify TSMC’s China risk keeps money managers up at night. Thefirm's results showed Berkshire repurchased about $9 billion in shares, steady with the record $9 billion in Q3.</p>\n<p>These repurchases were also a big jump from the&nbsp;$5.1 billion in Q2. At the time, that was more than double&nbsp;the prior quarterly record of $2.2 billion in Q4 2019&nbsp;and a shift from&nbsp;slower stock repurchases of $1.7 billion in Q1.</p>\n<p>Buffett said the company has repurchased more shares since the end of 2020, and \"is likely to further reduce its share count in the future.\"</p>\n<p>While he has historically been reluctant to splurge on stock repurchases, he explained his change of heart in his latest annual letter to shareholders.</p>\n<p>\"The math of repurchases grinds away slowly, but can be powerful over time,\" he wrote. \"The process offers a simple way for investors to own an ever-expanding portion of exceptional businesses.\"</p>\n<p>Berkshire loosened rules for Buffett to buy back shares in 2018. With Berkshire steadfastly cautious on M&amp;A in recent years, investors have been clamoring for more repurchases.</p>\n<p>Berkshire Hathaway Tweaks Portfolio</p>\n<p>Warren Buffett took a huge stake in<b>Verizon</b>(VZ) stock while dumping JPMorgan (JPM) stock entirely, according to thefirm's latest regulatory filing.</p>\n<p>Its new Verizon stake is massive, with Berkshire paying $8.62 billion for 147 million shares. It now accounts for 3% of the portfolio, making it the No. 6 stock by number of shares held.</p>\n<p>Buffett also opened new stakes in<b>Chevron</b>(CVX),<b>Marsh &amp; McLennan</b>(MMC) and<b>EW Scripps</b>(SSP) in Q4.</p>\n<p>Berkshire dumped entirely<b>Pfizer</b>(PFE),<b>JPMorgan Chase</b>(JPM),<b>Barrick Gold</b>(GOLD),<b>M&amp;T Bank</b>(MTB) and<b>PNC Financial</b>(PNC).</p>\n<p>The conglomerate grew stakes by 117% in<b>T-Mobile</b>(TMUS), 34% in<b>Kroger</b>(KR), 28% in<b>Merck</b>(MRK), 20% in<b>AbbVie</b>(ABBV), 11% in<b>Bristol-Myers Squibb</b>(BMY), and 1% in<b>RH</b>(RH).</p>\n<p>Buffett cut Berkshire's stake in Apple stock by 6%. It remains the No. 1 stock in his portfolio by market value and No. 2 stock by number of shares held, at 10.6% of the portfolio. He kept an Amazon stake steady.</p>\n<p>Warren Buffett Funds Media Deal</p>\n<p>Berkshire Hathaway is a key backer in a deal disclosed Sept. 24 that will see TV station owner<b>E.W. Scripps</b>(SSP) purchase privately held cable network ION Media for $2.65 billion. The latter firm's flagship, ION Television, is a top 5-ranked U.S. general entertainment network.</p>\n<p>Warren Buffett's firm is snapping up $600 million of Scripps preferred shares to help fund the deal. Scripps stock surged on on the news.</p>\n<p>Berkshire will also receive a warrant that allows it to snap up up to 23.1 million more shares at a price of $13. This adds up to an additional investment of $300 million. Scripps' common shares, however, currently trade below 11 each.</p>\n<p>Berkshire Hathaway Coronavirus Exposure</p>\n<p>As well as its status as an investment vehicle, Berkshire Hathaway is a conglomerate in its own right. It has interests in segments such as railroads, utilities and energy.</p>\n<p>Those sectors, along with other \"real economy\" companies that are Warren Buffett staples, have been hard hit by the coronavirus shutdowns and massive economic contraction. However they should benefit as the economy opens up again.</p>\n<p>Berkshire owns Geico, the No. 2 U.S. auto insurer after State Farm. Currently, states such as California are ordering insurers to give partial credits or refunds of premiums in lines such as private passenger automobile insurance.</p>\n<p>Railroads Not Immune</p>\n<p>Berkshire also owns BNSF Railway Company, the largest freight railroad network in North America. Rail operators such as<b>Union Pacific</b>(UNP) and<b>CSX</b>(CSX) have seen business suffer during the pandemic. But rail operators and other transportation companies are seeing business pick up again.</p>\n<p>Other wholly owned businesses such as Dairy Queen and multilevel marketing company Pampered Chef also struggled during coronavirus restrictions, though those are easing.</p>\n<p>Warren Buffett's Big Gas Bill</p>\n<p>Warren Buffett has been criticized for the size of his cash pile. But last July he madehis biggest acquisition in yearswith a $10 billion deal for<b>Dominion Energy</b>'s (D) assets.</p>\n<p>Berkshire seized the chance to secure Dominion's gas pipeline network after the utility giant and<b>Duke Energy</b>(DUK) unexpectedly aborted plans to build the Atlantic Coast Pipeline.</p>\n<p>Berkshire Hathaway Energy will buy about 7,700 miles of natural gas transmission pipelines and 900 billion cubic feet of gas storage. The all-cash deal includes $4 billion of equity and $5.7 billion of debt. It's set to close in the fourth quarter.</p>\n<p>\"We are very proud to be adding such a great portfolio of natural gas assets to our already strong energy business,\" Buffett said in a statement.</p>\n<p>Energy has been doing well so far in 2021. For example, the Vanguard Energy ETF (VDE) is up 39% since the start of the year.</p>\n<p>Berkshire Hathaway Stock Technical Analysis</p>\n<p>Amid the coronavirus-related stock market pullback, Berkshire Hathaway stock plummeted.&nbsp;MarketSmith analysis showsit has recovered from its woes, and recently broke out of anew flat base. While it managed to clear its buy zone, it is now sinking back towards it. Theideal buy pointwas 235.09.</p>\n<p>The flat base is one of the few reliable patterns that quality stocks form before they make substantial price advances. Bolstering the new base's case is the fact it is a first-stage pattern. It also appears that the company is gaining market share overall from other players in the key Brazilian market.</p><p><b>Investors might like Okta's big buy after all</b></p><p>Shares of Okta were up 8%, continuing an advance that has taken the cyber-identity specialist's stock up about 20% from its recent lows. The stock was down as much as 30%, but fundamentally, Okta looks like it's doing things right.</p><p>The company originally lost ground when it reported fourth-quarter financial results last week. Despite year-over-year revenue gains of 40% and a modest profit for the period, investors weren't sure how to take guidance that suggested somewhat slower revenue growth and a possible loss.</p><p>Also raising a few questions wasOkta's $6.5 billion acquisition bidfor privately held Auth0, which focuses on customer identity management. That's a growth area, and some have said that the Auth0 product actually has some advantages over Okta's competing offering that made a buyout a win-win for Okta.
