As is any other kind of investing for that matter. But it’s the unique metrics that dividend investors have to navigate which makes this area of investing a little more unique. All investors know upfront what kind of dividends an ASX share has paid out over the past 12 months. And, by extension, the kind of dividend yield each ASX share may possess.

But as investors should know, just because an ASX share has a high dividend yield, it doesn’t mean investors can take that to the bank. A common investing mistake is to choose an ASX dividend share due to a seemingly fat yield, only to have that yield pared back. Not to mention a simultaneous share price fall to boot. This scenario is often described as a ‘dividend trap’.

So let’s look at some ASX shares today that seem to be offering outsized yields right now. Could any of them be a dreaded dividend trap?

When is a high dividend yield just trap bait?

Magellan Financial Group Ltd (ASX: MFG)is one such share. Magellan has had a horrible year, losing around 66% of its value. But this has pushed up Magellan’s trailing dividend yield to an eye-watering 15.57% on current pricing. The interesting thing about Magellan is that when the company reported its half-year earnings last month,it declared an interim dividend of 110.1 cents per share, which coincidentally was paid out today.

That was Magellan’s highest-ever interim dividend. So why aren’t investors flocking to this company’s massive 15%-plus yield? Well, Magellan makes its money from its funds management business. And the company has been experiencing record fund outflows over the past few months for a number of reasons.

So it seems that investors are betting that this outflow will start to bite the company’s ability to keep funding dividends at these kinds of levels. We’ll have to see if this turns out to be the case, but at least one broker isn’t too sure it will.

Another ASX dividend share with a 15% yield right now

Fortescue Metals Group Limited (ASX: FMG)is another ASX dividend share seemingly offering a monster dividend yield right now. On current pricing, the iron ore giant has a trailing dividend yield of close to 15.5%. That’s even after the company cut its interim dividend by 41% as announced inits earnings last month. The cut was the result of Fortescue directing more capital towards its emerging Fortescue Future Industries hydrogen business.

Fortescue’s profits (and dividends) are intrinsically tied to the price of iron ore itself. Last month, Fortescue announced that its average revenue per dry metric tonne over the half was US$96. But iron ore has continued to boom in recent months, and is now going for a six-month high above US$160 a tonne.

If the iron ore price continues to hold at these levels, and Fortescue can continue to extract it at relatively low costs (made harder recently by surging oil prices), we could well possibly see dividends continue to roll in at these high rates. But again, we shall have to wait and see.

","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
15% Yield! Bearishness on the company was exacerbated by an analyst's price-target cut that morning, and the shares fell by more than 7% on the day.

So what

The analyst in question was Deutsche Bank's Emmanuel Papadakis, who shaved $20 off his existing price target on Moderna stock for a new level of $155. He is maintaining his hold recommendation on the shares.

Referring to the company's fourth-quarter results, published in late February, Papadakis described Moderna's performance as "relatively solid." He also views the stock as having "good fundamental valuation support" at the current price.

Now what

While Papadakis didn't seem overly impressed by Moderna's quarter, the company did post a pair of convincing beats. Its per-share net profit was $11.29, which was significantly better than the average analyst estimate of $9.90. Revenue of $7.2 billion also topped expectations. Collectively, those prognosticators were modeling a top-line tally of just under $6.8 billion.

Moderna also announced a major shareholder-pleasing move by unveiling a new share-repurchase program. Bearishness on the company was exacerbated by an analyst's price-target cut that morning, and the shares fell by more than 7% on the day.So whatThe analyst in question was Deutsche Bank's Emmanuel Papadakis, who shaved $20 off his existing price target on Moderna stock for a new level of $155. He is maintaining his hold recommendation on the shares.Image source: Getty Images.Referring to the company's fourth-quarter results, published in late February, Papadakis described Moderna's performance as \"relatively solid.\" He also views the stock as having \"good fundamental valuation support\" at the current price. Now whatWhile Papadakis didn't seem overly impressed by Moderna's quarter, the company did post a pair of convincing beats. Its per-share net profit was $11.29, which was significantly better than the average analyst estimate of $9.90. Revenue of $7.2 billion also topped expectations. Collectively, those prognosticators were modeling a top-line tally of just under $6.8 billion.Moderna also announced a major shareholder-pleasing move by unveiling a new share-repurchase program. This initiative will see the biotech buy back up to $3 billion worth of its stock, three times the amount of the company's previous initiative, which had been fully utilized by the end of January. The company's most recent news has generally been positive, and its coronavirus vaccine remains a go-to jab in many jurisdictions (including the U.S.). Buy Amazon.","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2217805410","media":"Motley Fool","summary":"The company is investing in its future.","content":"

The stock market got off to a weak start this year -- and Russia's recent invasion of Ukraine has added to concerns. The S&P 500 Index now is down more than 9% since Dec. 31. If you're worried about another market crash, you're surely not alone. Any turmoil in the economy or in the geopolitical environment often prompts us to think about how to protect our portfolios.

A correction doesn't always signal greater losses on the horizon. But it's still a good idea to be prepared at any time for future market crashes. And that means buying strong stocks that can't be permanently hurt by an eventual crash. One of my favorites is Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN). Here's why.

A solid track record

Amazon has a solid track record when it comes to growing revenue and profit. The company has generally increased both over the past few years. And two things have driven this: Amazon's retail business and Amazon Web Services (AWS), its cloud computing service.

AMZN net income (annual). Data by YCharts.

Retail often is sensitive to what's happening in the economy. But Amazon's strength is that it sells many essentials. So even when households can't afford to buy the extras, they'll still turn to Amazon for food, cleaning products, and other necessary items.

And its Prime program gives members reason to return for all of their needs. That's because of the many free and fast delivery options included with membership. Amazon also has considerably increased its number of Prime members over time -- and that movement continues. The company said it added "millions" of new members in the U.S. and internationally in the fourth quarter.

The overall outlook for e-commerce is positive. U.S. digital sales could surpass $1 trillion this year, according to Insider Intelligence. That's two years earlier than the research firm expected. And Insider Intelligence also says Amazon represents almost 40% of all U.S. e-commerce sales.

All of this sounds great. But here's something even better: the strength of AWS. Amazon's cloud computing business has driven profit at the company for quite some time. And that trend is continuing. Last year, AWS accounted for about 74% of Amazon's operating income.

AWS remains the leader in its industry, and it continues to gain ground. Meta Platforms, the owner of Facebook, recently chose AWS as its long-term cloud provider to advance its artificial intelligence program. And Nasdaq is moving its markets to AWS as it becomes a cloud-based exchange. Whether the market rallies or crashes, businesses still need cloud computing services.

Investing in the future

Amazon's growth slowed in recent months as the company faced the same headwinds as other retailers: labor shortages and inflation. At the same time, the company has invested in its fulfillment network and its Prime program. All of this hurts earnings in the near term. But the investments should power stronger earnings growth down the road.

The near-term pressure has weighed on the share price. It's dropped about 16% over the past six months. The S&P 500 Index now is down more than 9% since Dec. 31. If you're worried about another market crash, you're surely not alone. Any turmoil in the economy or in the geopolitical environment often prompts us to think about how to protect our portfolios.A correction doesn't always signal greater losses on the horizon. But it's still a good idea to be prepared at any time for future market crashes. And that means buying strong stocks that can't be permanently hurt by an eventual crash. One of my favorites is Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN). Here's why.A solid track recordAmazon has a solid track record when it comes to growing revenue and profit. The company has generally increased both over the past few years. And two things have driven this: Amazon's retail business and Amazon Web Services (AWS), its cloud computing service.AMZN net income (annual). Data by YCharts.Retail often is sensitive to what's happening in the economy. But Amazon's strength is that it sells many essentials. So even when households can't afford to buy the extras, they'll still turn to Amazon for food, cleaning products, and other necessary items.And its Prime program gives members reason to return for all of their needs. That's because of the many free and fast delivery options included with membership. Amazon also has considerably increased its number of Prime members over time -- and that movement continues. The company said it added \"millions\" of new members in the U.S. and internationally in the fourth quarter.The overall outlook for e-commerce is positive. U.S. digital sales could surpass $1 trillion this year, according to Insider Intelligence. That's two years earlier than the research firm expected. And Insider Intelligence also says Amazon represents almost 40% of all U.S. e-commerce sales.All of this sounds great. But here's something even better: the strength of AWS. Amazon's cloud computing business has driven profit at the company for quite some time. And that trend is continuing. Last year, AWS accounted for about 74% of Amazon's operating income.AWS remains the leader in its industry, and it continues to gain ground. Meta Platforms, the owner of Facebook, recently chose AWS as its long-term cloud provider to advance its artificial intelligence program. And Nasdaq is moving its markets to AWS as it becomes a cloud-based exchange. Whether the market rallies or crashes, businesses still need cloud computing services.Investing in the futureAmazon's growth slowed in recent months as the company faced the same headwinds as other retailers: labor shortages and inflation. At the same time, the company has invested in its fulfillment network and its Prime program. All of this hurts earnings in the near term. But the investments should power stronger earnings growth down the road.The near-term pressure has weighed on the share price. It's dropped about 16% over the past six months. I see this as an opportunity to buy shares of a company that has two businesses strong enough to weather the next market crash and those beyond. Stock performance may not be immediate. But over time, Amazon has what it takes to deliver products and services to customers -- and share gains to investors.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":260,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9038334860,"gmtCreate":1646738277852,"gmtModify":1676534156698,"author":{"id":"3572737091790048","authorId":"3572737091790048","name":"Priya","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/985b5a05a7ab269956f359b5d70c86ba","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3572737091790048","idStr":"3572737091790048"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Like","listText":"Like","text":"Like","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9038334860","repostId":"1185573374","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":585,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9038337495,"gmtCreate":1646738717774,"gmtModify":1676534156731,"author":{"id":"3572737091790048","authorId":"3572737091790048","name":"Priya","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/985b5a05a7ab269956f359b5d70c86ba","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3572737091790048","idStr":"3572737091790048"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Trap","listText":"Trap","text":"Trap","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9038337495","repostId":"1121042298","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":237,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"lives":[]}
