These multiples are lower than the <b>S&P 500 Index</b>'s trailing P/E of 31 and forward P/E of 22.</p>\n<p>That means there's a golden opportunity for investors to add a rapidly growing company to their portfolios at an attractive valuation, and they shouldn't miss out. The company delivered record quarterly revenue of $6.2 billion in Q3, up 41% year over year. It also clocked a record (adjusted) operating margin of 32.7%, a jump of 6.3 percentage points over the prior year.</p>\n<p>The terrific sales and margin growth led to record adjusted earnings of $1.90 per share, up 79% from the year-ago quarter. The results crushed the expectations of analysts who'd been looking for $1.77 per share in earnings on $5.94 billion in revenue.</p>\n<p>Applied Materials' guidance was the icing on the cake. The company expects, at the midpoint of its guidance range, to earn $1.94 per share this quarter on revenue of $6.33 billion. Wall Street had set the bar lower; analysts were expecting just $1.81 in earnings per share on $6.04 billion in revenue. The midpoint of the guidance indicates that Applied is anticipating 35% year-over-year revenue growth this quarter, while non-GAAP (adjusted) earnings could increase 55%.</p>\n<p>The impressive guidance is a clue that Applied Materials has switched into a higher gear, and it's unlikely to step off the gas given the massive end-market opportunity at hand. In fact, it wouldn't be surprising to see its growth over the next decade significantly outpacing the rate at which it's grown in the past 10 years, helping the stock to fly higher once again.</p>\n<h2>Sustainable growth drivers can help the stock soar</h2>\n<p>Applied Materials supplies chip fabrication equipment, services, and software to semiconductor manufacturers. Its largest source of revenue is the semiconductor systems business, through which Applied develops, manufactures, and sells semiconductor fabrication equipment. This segment produced nearly 72% of the company's total revenue last quarter and recorded 53% year-over-year growth.</p>\n<p>Within the semiconductor systems business, the foundry/logic vertical occupied the largest share with 63% of total revenue, up from 55% in the year-ago quarter. The foundry business is built for long-term growth, as chipmakers across the globe are ramping up capacity. For instance, global semiconductor capital spending stood at an estimated $29.4 billion in 2010, according to <b>Gartner</b>. Last year, that number had ballooned to $106.9 billion.</p>\n<p>Gartner estimates that global semiconductor spending will rise to $141.9 billion this year. Spending on semiconductor equipment can keep moving higher in the coming years on the back of a huge jump in chip demand.</p>\n<p>Applied Materials points out that the semiconductor industry took 40 years to achieve its first $200 billion in revenue; from 2000 to 2017, the industry added the next $200 billion. An additional $200 billion of revenue is expected by 2024, over a shorter span of just seven years. What's more, the semiconductor industry's revenue is anticipated to increase a whopping $400 billion from 2025 to 2030, hitting $1 trillion at the end of the forecast period.</p>\n<p>Chipmakers will need to buy new equipment or upgrade their existing setups to cater to this massive increase in semiconductor demand, which will be driven by several verticals including automotive, networking, and industrial. Koda, the president of Prime Planet Energy & Solutions, aToyota Motor Corp.andPanasonic Corp.battery joint-venture, was there on a mission: revamp the site’s operations to lower his cost of materials.</p>\n<p>He only had one day. The high altitude means staying any longer is tough for newcomers. Still, touring the roughly Seattle-sized mine site, Koda says he found a “treasure trove” of about 100 ways to improve operations -- such as adjusting production plans to prevent unused inventory piling up.</p>\n<p>The journey is emblematic of the measures Koda intends to take to slashup to50% from the cost of Prime Planet’s batteries by 2022. Achieving that target will see the company overtake industry leadersContemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd.andLG Energy Solution Co.in cost-competitiveness, Koda said in an interview at his office in Tokyo.</p>\n<p>Materials alone make up 60% of the cost of an EV battery and about half of that comes from resources like lithium and cobalt. Finding ways to reduce those expenses is proving increasingly important as surging demand for electric vehicles sends raw materials pricessoaring.</p>\n<p>The other half of the puzzle is bringing down the remaining 40% of costs, which are related to development, production and facility-investment. There, Prime Planet is working to increase efficiency by standardizing the chemicals in its cells based on the common needs of its automaker customers.</p>\n<p>By implementing these and other initiatives, “we’ll catch up with and overtake rivals in China and South Korea,” Koda said. “The foundation necessary to raise our competitiveness above rivals’ has pretty much been established,” he added.</p>\n<p>It’s an ambitious goal. Prime Planet formally started operations just last year and still has a lot to prove. The firm currently holds the top share -- around 25% -- of the market for hybrid batteries. But it lags far behind in higher capacity EV batteries, where China’s CATL and Korea’s LG Energy Solution together claim more than half the market.</p>\n<p>Acommon methodof lowering costs in the battery arena is to quickly build scale. And as companies jostle for a share of a global battery market SNE Research forecasts will be worth $352 billion in 2030, nation-states are becoming involved. South Korea this month announced plans toinvest40.6 trillion won ($35 billion) in its EV-battery industry by the end of the decade.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b6e93b85d653f885e6fb7ad3024c4a06\" tg-width=\"649\" tg-height=\"386\">Under Koda’s leadership, Prime Planet has moved to ramp up output. Last fiscal year it produced hybrid and EV batteries for 1.4 million vehicles. Earlier this year, the company announced it’sadding new linesat plants in Japan and China. It also plans to start producing batteries for around 500,000 hybrid vehicles a year at a factory on the Japanese island of Shikoku in 2022, Koda said.</p>\n<p>Toyota, Prime Planet’s parent company, is also stepping up plans to electrify its fleet. The world’s biggest automaker plans to nearly quadruple sales of electrified vehicles to 8 million units in 2030, meaning it will need to multiply current battery capacity by 30 times. It also clocked a record (adjusted) operating margin of 32.7%, a jump of 6.3 percentage points over the prior year.</p>\n<p>The terrific sales and margin growth led to record adjusted earnings of $1.90 per share, up 79% from the year-ago quarter. The results crushed the expectations of analysts who'd been looking for $1.77 per share in earnings on $5.94 billion in revenue.</p>\n<p>Applied Materials' guidance was the icing on the cake. The company expects, at the midpoint of its guidance range, to earn $1.94 per share this quarter on revenue of $6.33 billion. Wall Street had set the bar lower; analysts were expecting just $1.81 in earnings per share on $6.04 billion in revenue. The midpoint of the guidance indicates that Applied is anticipating 35% year-over-year revenue growth this quarter, while non-GAAP (adjusted) earnings could increase 55%.</p>\n<p>The impressive guidance is a clue that Applied Materials has switched into a higher gear, and it's unlikely to step off the gas given the massive end-market opportunity at hand. In fact, it wouldn't be surprising to see its growth over the next decade significantly outpacing the rate at which it's grown in the past 10 years, helping the stock to fly higher once again.</p>\n<h2>Sustainable growth drivers can help the stock soar</h2>\n<p>Applied Materials supplies chip fabrication equipment, services, and software to semiconductor manufacturers. Its largest source of revenue is the semiconductor systems business, through which Applied develops, manufactures, and sells semiconductor fabrication equipment. This segment produced nearly 72% of the company's total revenue last quarter and recorded 53% year-over-year growth.</p>\n<p>Within the semiconductor systems business, the foundry/logic vertical occupied the largest share with 63% of total revenue, up from 55% in the year-ago quarter. The foundry business is built for long-term growth, as chipmakers across the globe are ramping up capacity. For instance, global semiconductor capital spending stood at an estimated $29.4 billion in 2010, according to <b>Gartner</b>. Last year, that number had ballooned to $106.9 billion.</p>\n<p>Gartner estimates that global semiconductor spending will rise to $141.9 billion this year. Spending on semiconductor equipment can keep moving higher in the coming years on the back of a huge jump in chip demand.</p>\n<p>Applied Materials points out that the semiconductor industry took 40 years to achieve its first $200 billion in revenue; from 2000 to 2017, the industry added the next $200 billion. An additional $200 billion of revenue is expected by 2024, over a shorter span of just seven years. What's more, the semiconductor industry's revenue is anticipated to increase a whopping $400 billion from 2025 to 2030, hitting $1 trillion at the end of the forecast period.</p>\n<p>Chipmakers will need to buy new equipment or upgrade their existing setups to cater to this massive increase in semiconductor demand, which will be driven by several verticals including automotive, networking, and industrial. This is the second quarter that the index turned expansionary.</p>\n<p>In a statement, OCBC said that collections across the 100,000 SMEs represented in its index grew 6% quarter on quarter, driven by improved cross-border trade with Greater China and the ASEAN.</p>\n<p>This offset the continued drag from Food and Beverage and Business Services sectors, which were greatly affected by the restrictions implemented during the Phase 2 (Heightened Alert) period.</p>\n<p>“The promising recovery in SMEs over the past year was supported by a rapid shift towards digitalisation and e-commerce.
