In one camp are those who believe this process is unnecessary, as it doesn't change the underlying value of the company. The other camp believes keeping shares within reach of everyday investors plays an important role in investor psychology.

More important, however, is the fact that most stock splits are typically preceded by a period of robust business performance that sends the stock price soaring. Let's look at two companies with a history of stock splits -- fueled by strong financial results -- that could be poised for even greater gains due to recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI).

1. Alphabet

Since its IPO -- as Google -- in 1998, Alphabet stock has had a long and distinguished run. The company's revenue has increased by more than 11,000%, while its earnings per share (EPS) have soared 31,000%, resulting in 5,360% stock price gains.

To keep its stock price reasonable for retail investors, the company has split its shares twice, the most recent being a 20-for-1 stock split in mid-2022. While Alphabet stock likely won't match the scorching gains of the past 25 years, the company's AI expertise could provide a strong catalyst in years to come.

While a slump in online advertising last year posed challenges, Alphabet hasn't wasted any time diving into the AI revolution. Earlier this year, Alphabet debuted its next-generation chatbot Bard, a direct rival to ChatGPT. The company continues to forge ahead, integrating AI across a broad cross-section of its products and services, which will fuel its next phase of growth.

Much of Alphabet's main focus has been on enhancing its existing Google products -- which boast billions of users -- and supercharging its cloud infrastructure service with AI functionality. Google Cloud is the fastest-growing of the "big three," up 31% year over year in the second quarter, outpacing Amazon and Microsoft, which delivered 12% and 26%, respectively. This gives the company a large and growing target market for its AI services. Google is also infusing AI into its namesake search, with plans to debut new AI-powered features in the coming weeks and months.

This infusion of AI functionality should help Google maintain its search dominance and will also be an easy sell to many of the company's cloud computing customers, helping it continue to steal share from its cloud rivals.

Alphabet's digital advertising is still recovering from last year's downturn, and AI hasn't made much of an impact on its cloud results thus far. In the second quarter, cloud revenue rose just 28% year over year to $8 billion, but as demand for AI continues to accelerate, Google Cloud should reap the rewards of Alphabet's continuing AI investments.

2. Nvidia

Nvidia has a long history of performance and stock splits, with the most recent a 4-for-1 stock split coming in late 2021. This was preceded by an even longer history of performance, resulting in revenue that increased by nearly 19,000% and EPS that grew 66,000%, driving its stock price up 56,000% since its 1999 IPO. While investors shouldn't expect the same blistering gains over the next 24 years, AI and cloud computing could act as significant catalysts for Nvidia over the coming decade or more.

The company pioneered the graphics processing units (GPUs) that render lifelike images in video games, but they also helped kick-start the AI revolution. The parallel processing capability of the chips -- or the ability to run a multitude of complex mathematical computations simultaneously -- proved perfect for the massive number-crunching needs of AI.

Nvidia quickly pivoted to capitalize on that need, developing software-infused chips and systems to provide turnkey solutions for AI. Nvidia GPUs are already the gold standard for cloud computing and data center operations, proving equally adept at speeding data through the ether, and are the choice of all the largest cloud infrastructure providers, including Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and, of course, Google Cloud.

Nvidia's data center segment, which includes processors used for AI, has been on fire so far this year. For its fiscal 2024 second quarter (ended July 30), data center revenue soared 141% year over year to a record $10 billion, and management believes another consecutive record-setting quarter is on tap thanks to AI.

The fine print

One of the side effects of a soaring stock price is an equally high valuation -- and neither of these stocks can honestly be called cheap. Alphabet is currently selling for 24 times forward earnings, in line with the price-to-earnings ratio of 24 for the S&P 500. At the same time, Nvidia trades for 40 times earnings. While that might seem outrageous at first glance, I've argued before that Nvidia's growth potential justifies a hefty price tag. In one camp are those who believe this process is unnecessary, as it doesn't change the underlying value of the company. The other camp believes keeping shares within reach of everyday investors plays an important role in investor psychology.More important, however, is the fact that most stock splits are typically preceded by a period of robust business performance that sends the stock price soaring. Let's look at two companies with a history of stock splits -- fueled by strong financial results -- that could be poised for even greater gains due to recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI).1. AlphabetSince its IPO -- as Google -- in 1998, Alphabet stock has had a long and distinguished run. Google Cloud is the fastest-growing of the \"big three,\" up 31% year over year in the second quarter, outpacing Amazon and Microsoft, which delivered 12% and 26%, respectively. This gives the company a large and growing target market for its AI services. Google is also infusing AI into its namesake search, with plans to debut new AI-powered features in the coming weeks and months. This infusion of AI functionality should help Google maintain its search dominance and will also be an easy sell to many of the company's cloud computing customers, helping it continue to steal share from its cloud rivals.Alphabet's digital advertising is still recovering from last year's downturn, and AI hasn't made much of an impact on its cloud results thus far. In the second quarter, cloud revenue rose just 28% year over year to $8 billion, but as demand for AI continues to accelerate, Google Cloud should reap the rewards of Alphabet's continuing AI investments. 2. NvidiaNvidia has a long history of performance and stock splits, with the most recent a 4-for-1 stock split coming in late 2021. The parallel processing capability of the chips -- or the ability to run a multitude of complex mathematical computations simultaneously -- proved perfect for the massive number-crunching needs of AI.Nvidia quickly pivoted to capitalize on that need, developing software-infused chips and systems to provide turnkey solutions for AI. The fine printOne of the side effects of a soaring stock price is an equally high valuation -- and neither of these stocks can honestly be called cheap. The once-in-a-generation shift to AI provides an unprecedented opportunity that shouldn't be missed. While no one knows for sure how large the market is, most on Wall Street believe the opportunity is worth trillions of dollars, and Nvidia is well positioned to capture its share of that windfall. For those looking for a degree of safety, Alphabet has that in spades. That said, Nvidia has the most to gain from the accelerating adoption of AI.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":608,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":234317660827656,"gmtCreate":1698252273098,"gmtModify":1698252276277,"author":{"id":"3573169023969511","authorId":"3573169023969511","name":"Beng14","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d595653db9f9d8871655860ad9c92bf5","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3573169023969511","authorIdStr":"3573169023969511"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Great ","listText":"Great ","text":"Great","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/234317660827656","repostId":"234262078173408","repostType":1,"repost":{"id":234262078173408,"gmtCreate":1698201726193,"gmtModify":1698203009523,"author":{"id":"4125570196865622","authorId":"4125570196865622","name":"orsiri","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/65ce9f1def4b96d1cd3e7dce4d696e8e","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4125570196865622","authorIdStr":"4125570196865622"},"themes":[],"title":"NetEase: Powering Up Profits and Smashing Expectations","htmlText":"Ladies and gentlemen, brace yourselves for a wild rollercoaster ride into the world of non-traditional investments. Finance","summary":"After stocks endured a second straight week of selling last week, investors will be looking to a sla","content":"

After stocks endured a second straight week of selling last week, investors will be looking to a slate of fresh economic and earnings data as a catalyst for a potential reprieve.

The U.S. stock and bond markets will be closed Monday in observance of the Presidents Day holiday, so new data releases will be consolidated to the later part of the week. And updates on tensions in Russia and Ukraine will also remain in focus throughout the week after stocks sank to their lowest levels in a month on Friday, amid concerns about the escalating geopolitical conflict.

While the emerging threat of military conflict has overshadowed many other worries in the markets, inflation has still remained a central issue for investors. Inflation has implications both in informing the speed at which the Federal Reserve tightens monetary policy, and the extent to which consumers pull back on spending and slow overall economic activity in response to rising prices.

"I really think most of the Russia-Ukraine volatility occurred in the energy space, particularly with oil. I think the rest of the volatility in the broader market has to do with the Fed tightening conversation," Frances Stacy, Optimal Capital director of strategy, told Yahoo Finance Live on Friday. "We're looking at this sort of aggressive tightening against this backdrop of inflation, and I think that that's what's causing the volatility."

On Friday, the Bureau of Economic Analysis will release its monthly personal consumption expenditures (PCE) deflator, offering a fresh print on the extent of price increases across the recovering economy.

Consensus economists expect the PCE to post a rise of another 0.6% in January, according to Bloomberg data, accelerating from December's 0.4% increase. This would represent a 14th consecutive monthly increase, and bring the index up by 6.0% on a year-over-year basis. This, in turn, would mark the fastest increase since 1982, and also accelerate from December's 5.8% annual rise.

The core PCE index — the Fed's preferred gauge of underlying inflation stripping out volatile food and energy prices — likely also ramped compared to December's index. Consensus economists are looking for a 5.2% increase in core PCE in January, compared to December's 4.9% rise.

Expectations for the latest inflation print suggest the economy has still not yet seen the peak in price increases. And increasingly, central bank officials have come around to the notion that inflation has remained stickier than previously expected, especially as supply chain issues and virus-related disruptions persist.

"Since the December meeting, I would say that the inflation situation is about the same but probably slightly worse," Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said in a January press conference. "I’d be inclined to raise my own estimate of 2022 core PCE inflation ... by a few tenths today."

And the latest print on PCE will likely reaffirm readings from other closely watched inflation prints. The January Consumer Price Index (CPI) jumped by 7.5% year-over-year to represent the largest increase since 1982, accelerating markedly from the 7.0% increase from December. And on the producer side, wholesale prices jumped 9.7% year-on-year in January, ticking down only slightly from December's record increase of 9.8%.

Consumer confidence

Despite the mounting inflationary pressures, however, consumers have largely continued to spend. Retail sales rose by a better-than-expected 3.8% in January, marking the biggest jump since March 2021 and exceeding estimates.

And this steady consumption has come even as consumers increasingly cited inflation as a key concern for their own personal finances. Average hourly wages have also climbed in recent months, but have still not kept pace with inflation.

"The resilience of spending stands in stark contrast to the slump in consumer confidence, with households upping their purchases of big ticket items while simultaneously reporting that now is a particularly bad time to make those purchases," Paul Ashworth, chief North American economist for Capital Economics, wrote in a note. "The surge in inflation is the root cause of consumer angst. Sentiment should improve as inflation falls back later this year, but the current weakness is a reminder that real consumption growth will be muted this year."

The Conference Board's Consumer Confidence Index due for release on Tuesday will help provide a timely snapshot of consumers' thinking following the latest spike in prices at the beginning of the year. Consensus economists are looking for the index to fall to 110.0 for February, which would mark the lowest level since September 2021, when the Delta variant had weighed on consumers' outlooks. The consumer confidence index had been at 113.8 in January.

Earnings season rolls on

Investors will also receive a number of new earnings results this week, with major retailers including Home Depot (HD), Lowe's (LOW), Macy's (M) and The TJX Cos. (TJX) reporting alongside other closely watched names from Coinbase (COIN) to Wayfair (W) and Nikola (NKLA).

So far this earnings season, corporate profits have remained robust, albeit while slowing compared to prior quarters. As of Friday, 84% of S&P 500 companies had reported actual fourth-quarter earnings results, according to FactSet. And the estimated earnings growth rate for S&P 500 companies in aggregate stood at 30.9%, compared to about 40% from the third quarter.

Still, the estimated earnings growth rate for the fourth quarter has trended continuously higher as more companies reported better-than-expected results. On December 31, the estimated earnings growth rate for the fourth quarter had been at just 21.2%.

But while results for many companies have been positive for the final three months of 2021, outlooks have weakened, reflecting lingering supply chain uncertainty, rising prices and other macro concerns. FactSet noted that of companies that held their earnings conference calls between Dec. 15 and Feb. 17, 72% of the corporations mentioned "inflation."

"In terms of earnings guidance from corporations, 71% of the S&P 500 companies (55 out of 77) that have issued EPS [earnings per share] guidance for Q1 2022 have issued negative guidance," FactSet's John Butters wrote in a note Friday. Inflation has implications both in informing the speed at which the Federal Reserve tightens monetary policy, and the extent to which consumers pull back on spending and slow overall economic activity in response to rising prices.\"I really think most of the Russia-Ukraine volatility occurred in the energy space, particularly with oil. I think the rest of the volatility in the broader market has to do with the Fed tightening conversation,\" Frances Stacy, Optimal Capital director of strategy, told Yahoo Finance Live on Friday. \"We're looking at this sort of aggressive tightening against this backdrop of inflation, and I think that that's what's causing the volatility.\"On Friday, the Bureau of Economic Analysis will release its monthly personal consumption expenditures (PCE) deflator, offering a fresh print on the extent of price increases across the recovering economy.Consensus economists expect the PCE to post a rise of another 0.6% in January, according to Bloomberg data, accelerating from December's 0.4% increase. Consensus economists are looking for a 5.2% increase in core PCE in January, compared to December's 4.9% rise.Expectations for the latest inflation print suggest the economy has still not yet seen the peak in price increases. And increasingly, central bank officials have come around to the notion that inflation has remained stickier than previously expected, especially as supply chain issues and virus-related disruptions persist.\"Since the December meeting, I would say that the inflation situation is about the same but probably slightly worse,\" Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said in a January press conference. \"I’d be inclined to raise my own estimate of 2022 core PCE inflation ... by a few tenths today.\"And the latest print on PCE will likely reaffirm readings from other closely watched inflation prints. The January Consumer Price Index (CPI) jumped by 7.5% year-over-year to represent the largest increase since 1982, accelerating markedly from the 7.0% increase from December. And on the producer side, wholesale prices jumped 9.7% year-on-year in January, ticking down only slightly from December's record increase of 9.8%.Consumer confidenceDespite the mounting inflationary pressures, however, consumers have largely continued to spend. Retail sales rose by a better-than-expected 3.8% in January, marking the biggest jump since March 2021 and exceeding estimates. And this steady consumption has come even as consumers increasingly cited inflation as a key concern for their own personal finances. Average hourly wages have also climbed in recent months, but have still not kept pace with inflation.\"The resilience of spending stands in stark contrast to the slump in consumer confidence, with households upping their purchases of big ticket items while simultaneously reporting that now is a particularly bad time to make those purchases,\" Paul Ashworth, chief North American economist for Capital Economics, wrote in a note. \"The surge in inflation is the root cause of consumer angst. Sentiment should improve as inflation falls back later this year, but the current weakness is a reminder that real consumption growth will be muted this year.\"The Conference Board's Consumer Confidence Index due for release on Tuesday will help provide a timely snapshot of consumers' thinking following the latest spike in prices at the beginning of the year. Consensus economists are looking for the index to fall to 110.0 for February, which would mark the lowest level since September 2021, when the Delta variant had weighed on consumers' outlooks. The consumer confidence index had been at 113.8 in January.Earnings season rolls onInvestors will also receive a number of new earnings results this week, with major retailers including Home Depot (HD), Lowe's (LOW), Macy's (M) and The TJX Cos. (TJX) reporting alongside other closely watched names from Coinbase (COIN) to Wayfair (W) and Nikola (NKLA).So far this earnings season, corporate profits have remained robust, albeit while slowing compared to prior quarters. As of Friday, 84% of S&P 500 companies had reported actual fourth-quarter earnings results, according to FactSet. And the estimated earnings growth rate for S&P 500 companies in aggregate stood at 30.9%, compared to about 40% from the third quarter.Still, the estimated earnings growth rate for the fourth quarter has trended continuously higher as more companies reported better-than-expected results. On December 31, the estimated earnings growth rate for the fourth quarter had been at just 21.2%.But while results for many companies have been positive for the final three months of 2021, outlooks have weakened, reflecting lingering supply chain uncertainty, rising prices and other macro concerns. FactSet noted that of companies that held their earnings conference calls between Dec. 15 and Feb. 17, 72% of the corporations mentioned \"inflation.\"\"In terms of earnings guidance from corporations, 71% of the S&P 500 companies (55 out of 77) that have issued EPS [earnings per share] guidance for Q1 2022 have issued negative guidance,\" FactSet's John Butters wrote in a note Friday. \"This is the highest percentage of S&P 500 companies issuing negative guidance since Q3 2019 (73%).\"\"Thus, the market may be reacting more to the negative earnings guidance and downward estimates revisions for the first quarter of 2022 than the earnings surprises being reported for the fourth-quarter of 2021,\" Butters added.Economic calendarMonday: No notable reports scheduled for releaseTuesday: FHFA House Price Index, December (1.1% expected, 1.1% in November); S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller 20-City Composite Index, December month-over-month (1.10% expected, 1.18% in November); S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller 20-City Composite Index, December year-over-year (18.30% expected, 18.29% in November); Markit U.S. Manufacturing PMI, February preliminary (56.0 expected, 55.5 in January); Markit U.S. Services PMI, February preliminary (53.0 expected, 51.2 in January); Markit U.S. Composite PMI, February preliminary (51.1 in January); Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index, February (110.0 expected, 113.8 in January); Richmond Fed Manufacturing Index, February (10 expected, 8 in January)Wednesday: MBA Mortgage Applications, week ended February 18 (-5.4% during prior week)Thursday: Chicago Fed National Activity Index, January (-0.15 in December); GDP annualized, quarter-over-quarter, 4Q second estimate (7.0% expected, 6.9% in prior estimate); Personal consumption, 4Q second estimate (3.3% expected, 3.3% in prior estimate); Core PCE quarter-over-quarter, 4Q second estimate (4.9% expected, 4.9% in prior estimate); Kansas City Fed Manufacturing Activity, February (24 in January)Friday: Personal income, January (-0.4%, 0.3% in December); Personal spending, January (1.5% expected, -0.6% in December); Durable Goods Orders, January preliminary (0.9% -0.7% in December); Durable Goods Orders excluding transportation, January preliminary (0.3% expected, 0.6% in December); PCE deflator, January year-over-year (6.0% expected, 5.8% in December); PCE deflator, January month-over-month (0.6% expected, 0.4% in December); PCE core deflator, January year-over-year (5.2% expected, 4.9% in December); PCE core deflator, January month-over-month (0.5% expected, 0.5% in December)Earnings calendarMondayNo notable reports scheduled for releaseTuesdayBefore market open: Apache Corp. His HCM Dividend Sector PlusHCMQX,-0.05%) and HCM Income PlusHCMLX,+0.30%funds post similar outperformance.
\n
There are drawbacks, which I detail below. (Among them: Potentially long stretches of underperformance and regular tax bills.) But first, what can we learn from this winner?
\n
So-called quants never share all the details of their proprietary systems, but Howard shares a lot, as you’ll see. And this Texas rancher has a lot of good advice based on “horse sense” — not surprising, given his infectious passion for the markets, and his three decades of experience as a pro.
\n
Here are five lessons, 12 exchange traded funds (ETFs) and four stocks to consider, from a recent interview with him.
\n
Lesson #1: Don’t be emotional
\n
It’s no surprise so many people do poorly in the market. Evolution has programmed us to fail. For survival, we’ve learned to run from things that frightens us. And crave more of things that are pleasurable — like sweets or fats to store calories ahead of what might be a long stretch without food. But in the market, acting on the emotions of fear and greed invariably make us do the wrong thing at the wrong time. Sell at the bottom, buy at the top.
\n
Likewise, we’re programmed to believe being with the crowd brings safety. If you’re a zebra on the Savanna, you are more likely to get picked off by a predator if you go it alone. The problem here is being part of a crowd — and crowd psychology — dumb us down to a purely emotional level. This is why people in crowds do terrible things they would never do on their own. It doesn’t matter how smart you are. When you join a crowd, you lose a lot of IQ points. Base emotions take over.
\n
To do well in the market, you have to counteract these tendencies. “One of the biggest mistakes individual investors and money managers make is getting emotional,” says Howard. “Let your emotions go.”
\n
Lesson #2: Have a system and stick to it
\n
To exorcise emotion, have a system. “And don’t second guess it,” says Howard. “This keeps you from letting the pandemic or Afghanistan scare you out of the market.” He calls his system the HCM-BuyLine. It is basically a momentum and trend-following system — which often works well in the markets.
\n
The HCM-BuyLine basically works like this. First, rather than use the S&P 500SPX,-0.03%or the Dow Jones Industrial AverageDJIA,-0.21%,Howard blends several stock indices to create his own index. Then he uses a moving average that tells him whether the market is in an uptrend or downtrend.
\n
When the moving average drops 3.5%, he sells 35%. If it drops 6.5%, he sells another 35%. He rarely goes to 100% cash.
\n
“If the BuyLine is positive, we will stay long no matter what,” he says. “We take all the emotion out of the equation by letting the math decide.”
\n
Right now, it’s bullish. (More on this below.)
\n
Your system also has to tell you when to get back in.
\n
“That’s where most people screw up,” he says. “They get out of the market, and they don’t know when to get back in.” The HCM-BuyLine gives a buy signal when his custom index trades above its moving average for six consecutive sessions, and then goes on to trade above the high hit during those six days.
\n
You don’t need a system that calls exact market tops or bottoms. Instead, the BuyLine keeps Howard out of down markets 85% of the time, and in for 85% of the good times.
\n
“If we can do that consistently, we have superior returns and a less stressful life,” he says. “Being all in during a bad tape is no fun.”
\n
His system is slow to get him out of the market, but quick to get him back in. Not even a 10% correction will necessarily move him out. He’s often buying those pullbacks. Getting back in fast makes sense, because recoveries off bottoms tend to happen fast.
\n
“The HCM-BuyLine takes all the emotion out of the process,” says Howard.
\n
Lesson #3: Don’t fight the tape
\n
This concept is one of the core pieces of wisdom from Marty Zweig’s classic book, “Winning on Wall Street.”
\n
“You have to stay on the right side of market,” agrees Howard. “If you try to trade long in a bad market, it is painful.”
\n
In other words, don’t try to be a hero.
\n
“Sometimes, not losing money is where you want to be,” he says.
\n
Likewise, don’t turn cautious just because the market hits new highs — like now. You should love new highs, because it is a sign of market strength that may likely endure.
\n
Lesson #4: Keep it simple
\n
As you’ll see below, Howard doesn’t use esoteric instruments such as derivatives, swaps or index options. He doesn’t even trade foreign stocks or currencies. This is refreshing for individual investors, because we have a harder time accessing those tools.
\n
“You don’t have to trade crazy stuff,” he says. “You can trade plain-vanilla ETFs and beat everybody out there.”
\n
Lesson #5: How to trade the current market
\n
First, be long.
\n
“The HCM-BuyLine is very positive. We are 100% in,” says Howard. “The market is broadening out. It is getting pretty exciting. We do not see it turn around any time soon. We are buying pullbacks.”
\n
One bullish signal is all the cash on the sidelines. “If there is any relief in Covid, we may see a big rally. We may end up with a great fall [season].”
\n
Howard uses momentum indicators to select stocks and ETFs, too. For sectors he favors the following.
\n
He likes health care, tradable through the iShares US HealthcareIYH,-0.04%and ProShares Ultra Health CareRXL,+0.12%ETFs. He’s turning more bullish on biotech, which he plays via the iShares Biotechnology ETFIBB,-0.11%.
\n
He likes consumer discretionary tradable through the iShares US Consumer ServicesIYC,-0.30%,and airlines via US Global JetsJETS,-1.17%.He also likes tech exposure via the Invesco QQQ TrustQQQ,+0.31%,iShares US TechnologyIYW,+0.50%and iShares SemiconductorSOXX,+0.75%.
\n
He likes small-caps via the Vanguard Small-Cap Growth Index FundVBK,+0.07%.And convertible bonds via SPDR Bloomberg Barclays Convertible SecuritiesCWB,+0.64%and iShares Convertible BondICVT,+0.37%.
\n
As for individual names, he singles out MicrosoftMSFT,-0.00%and AppleAAPL,+0.42%in tech, as well as Amazon.comAMZN,+0.43%and TeslaTSLA,+0.16%.
\n
Also consider Howard’s two ETFs: The HCM Defender 100 IndexQQH,+0.62%and HCM Defender 500 IndexLGH,+1.32%.
\n
He prefers to add to holdings on 1%-3% dips.
\n
A few drawbacks
\n
His HCM Tactical Growth fund has a history of posting two-year stretches of underperformance of 1.5% to 8.8%, since it was launched in 2015. The fund then came roaring back to net the very positive five-year outperformance cited above. Investing in his system can require patience.
\n
Every manager, including Warren Buffett, can have a stretch of underperformance, says Howard.
\n
“We are in the odds game,” he says. “Even in the odds game, you can have a bad hand or two thrown at you.”
\n
Another challenge is the high turnover, which is 140% a year for Tactical Growth. This means Uncle Sam takes a big cut in the good years. So if you buy Howard’s funds, you may want to do so in a tax-protected account.
","source":"lsy1603348471595","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Beat the market with this quant system that’s very bullish on stocks at record highs
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nBeat the market with this quant system that’s very bullish on stocks at record highs\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-09-05 10:56 GMT+8 MarketWatch\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Vance Howard’s HCM Tactical Growth Fund moves you in and out of the stock market when prudent to do so. Base emotions take over.\nTo do well in the market, you have to counteract these tendencies. “One of the biggest mistakes individual investors and money managers make is getting emotional,” says Howard. “Let your emotions go.”\nLesson #2: Have a system and stick to it\nTo exorcise emotion, have a system. “And don’t second guess it,” says Howard. “This keeps you from letting the pandemic or Afghanistan scare you out of the market.” He calls his system the HCM-BuyLine. It is basically a momentum and trend-following system — which often works well in the markets.\nThe HCM-BuyLine basically works like this. First, rather than use the S&P 500SPX,-0.03%or the Dow Jones Industrial AverageDJIA,-0.21%,Howard blends several stock indices to create his own index. Then he uses a moving average that tells him whether the market is in an uptrend or downtrend.\nWhen the moving average drops 3.5%, he sells 35%. If it drops 6.5%, he sells another 35%. He rarely goes to 100% cash.\n“If the BuyLine is positive, we will stay long no matter what,” he says. “We take all the emotion out of the equation by letting the math decide.”\nRight now, it’s bullish. (More on this below.)\nYour system also has to tell you when to get back in.\n“That’s where most people screw up,” he says. “They get out of the market, and they don’t know when to get back in.” The HCM-BuyLine gives a buy signal when his custom index trades above its moving average for six consecutive sessions, and then goes on to trade above the high hit during those six days.\nYou don’t need a system that calls exact market tops or bottoms. Instead, the BuyLine keeps Howard out of down markets 85% of the time, and in for 85% of the good times.\n“If we can do that consistently, we have superior returns and a less stressful life,” he says. “Being all in during a bad tape is no fun.”\nHis system is slow to get him out of the market, but quick to get him back in. Not even a 10% correction will necessarily move him out. He’s often buying those pullbacks. Getting back in fast makes sense, because recoveries off bottoms tend to happen fast.\n“The HCM-BuyLine takes all the emotion out of the process,” says Howard.\nLesson #3: Don’t fight the tape\nThis concept is one of the core pieces of wisdom from Marty Zweig’s classic book, “Winning on Wall Street.”\n“You have to stay on the right side of market,” agrees Howard. “If you try to trade long in a bad market, it is painful.”\nIn other words, don’t try to be a hero.\n“Sometimes, not losing money is where you want to be,” he says.\nLikewise, don’t turn cautious just because the market hits new highs — like now. You should love new highs, because it is a sign of market strength that may likely endure.\nLesson #4: Keep it simple\nAs you’ll see below, Howard doesn’t use esoteric instruments such as derivatives, swaps or index options. He doesn’t even trade foreign stocks or currencies. This is refreshing for individual investors, because we have a harder time accessing those tools.\n“You don’t have to trade crazy stuff,” he says. “You can trade plain-vanilla ETFs and beat everybody out there.”\nLesson #5: How to trade the current market\nFirst, be long.\n“The HCM-BuyLine is very positive. We are 100% in,” says Howard. “The market is broadening out. It is getting pretty exciting. We do not see it turn around any time soon. We are buying pullbacks.”\nOne bullish signal is all the cash on the sidelines. “If there is any relief in Covid, we may see a big rally. We may end up with a great fall [season].”\nHoward uses momentum indicators to select stocks and ETFs, too. For sectors he favors the following.\nHe likes health care, tradable through the iShares US HealthcareIYH,-0.04%and ProShares Ultra Health CareRXL,+0.12%ETFs. He’s turning more bullish on biotech, which he plays via the iShares Biotechnology ETFIBB,-0.11%.\nHe likes consumer discretionary tradable through the iShares US Consumer ServicesIYC,-0.30%,and airlines via US Global JetsJETS,-1.17%.He also likes tech exposure via the Invesco QQQ TrustQQQ,+0.31%,iShares US TechnologyIYW,+0.50%and iShares SemiconductorSOXX,+0.75%.\nHe likes small-caps via the Vanguard Small-Cap Growth Index FundVBK,+0.07%.And convertible bonds via SPDR Bloomberg Barclays Convertible SecuritiesCWB,+0.64%and iShares Convertible BondICVT,+0.37%.\nAs for individual names, he singles out MicrosoftMSFT,-0.00%and AppleAAPL,+0.42%in tech, as well as Amazon.comAMZN,+0.43%and TeslaTSLA,+0.16%.\nAlso consider Howard’s two ETFs: The HCM Defender 100 IndexQQH,+0.62%and HCM Defender 500 IndexLGH,+1.32%.\nHe prefers to add to holdings on 1%-3% dips.\nA few drawbacks\nHis HCM Tactical Growth fund has a history of posting two-year stretches of underperformance of 1.5% to 8.8%, since it was launched in 2015. The fund then came roaring back to net the very positive five-year outperformance cited above. Investing in his system can require patience.\nEvery manager, including Warren Buffett, can have a stretch of underperformance, says Howard.\n“We are in the odds game,” he says. “Even in the odds game, you can have a bad hand or two thrown at you.”\nAnother challenge is the high turnover, which is 140% a year for Tactical Growth. This means Uncle Sam takes a big cut in the good years. So if you buy Howard’s funds, you may want to do so in a tax-protected account.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":122,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9900795039,"gmtCreate":1658762486721,"gmtModify":1676536203547,"author":{"id":"3573169023969511","authorId":"3573169023969511","name":"Beng14","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d595653db9f9d8871655860ad9c92bf5","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3573169023969511","authorIdStr":"3573169023969511"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$LION-OCBC HSTECH ETF S$(HST.SI)$great","listText":"$LION-OCBC HSTECH ETF S$(HST.SI)$great","text":"$LION-OCBC HSTECH ETF S$(HST.SI)$great","images":[{"img":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/851241804bf143f8a2c4a1870b4a9e76","width":"1080","height":"3402"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":2,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9900795039","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":276,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9062994955,"gmtCreate":1651984078077,"gmtModify":1676535009133,"author":{"id":"3573169023969511","authorId":"3573169023969511","name":"Beng14","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d595653db9f9d8871655860ad9c92bf5","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3573169023969511","authorIdStr":"3573169023969511"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Lion-OCBC Sec HSTECH S$(HST.SI)$what","listText":"$Lion-OCBC Sec HSTECH S$(HST.SI)$what","text":"$Lion-OCBC Sec HSTECH S$(HST.SI)$what","images":[{"img":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/654c2950fb6291ca1a2d52a1e4ca2f7d","width":"1080","height":"1920"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9062994955","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":147,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":837058767,"gmtCreate":1629849689159,"gmtModify":1676530148705,"author":{"id":"3573169023969511","authorId":"3573169023969511","name":"Beng14","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d595653db9f9d8871655860ad9c92bf5","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3573169023969511","authorIdStr":"3573169023969511"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$XIAOMI-W(01810)$.
