meme-stock mania. Despite its worsening financial situation, shares have skyrocketed 2,600% this year. And while there is something charming about individual investors upending Wall Street, AMC stock is poised to disappoint.
\n
Rather than chasing meme-stocks, investors should consider buying Cloudflare (NYSE:NET). This company is growing quickly and its future looks bright. Here's why.
\n
AMC Entertainment
\n
Perhaps, the most important thing investors should know about AMC is something the company itself mentioned in a recent 8-K Filing: \"We believe that recent volatility and our current market prices reflect [dynamics] unrelated to our underlying business.\"
\n
The statement goes on to caution investors against buying stock unless they are prepared to lose all or a significant portion of their investment. Of course, you should never invest money you can't afford to lose, but this dire warning should still rattle current and prospective shareholders.
\n
If you're not convinced, let's look at AMC's financial results. Last year, attendance and revenue fell 79% and 77%, respectively. And despite reopening roughly one-third of its international theaters and two-thirds of its domestic theaters, its performance has actually worsened this year. Attendance and revenue plunged 89% and 84%, respectively, during the first quarter.
\n
Understandably, some investors are hoping things improve as the economy reopens. But that may be too late -- the competitive landscape has already shifted dramatically.
\n
During the pandemic, streaming services like HBO Max and Peacock went live, Disney+ started taking titles directly to consumers, and Universal Studios cut the theatrical exclusivity window to 17 days -- prior to the pandemic, AMC retained exclusive rights for about 90 days. Put simply, the company is facing more competition than ever before.
\n
As a final thought, in a recent 10-Q Filing with the SEC, AMC explained that it will need to reach 85% of pre-pandemic attendance levels by the fourth quarter of 2021 in order to comply with minimum liquidity requirements. If that doesn't happen, bankruptcy would likely be the next step, which means shareholders would \"suffer a total loss of their investment.\"
\n
Cloudflare
\n
Cloudflare is a cloud services provider. Its platform helps clients secure and accelerate the performance of websites and applications. For example, it recently launched Cloudflare One, a network-as-a-service solution designed to replace outdated corporate networks.
\n
Traditionally, enterprises have taken a castle-and-moat approach to network security. All sensitive data was stored in a central location, and firewall appliances and internet gateways were used to filter incoming and outgoing traffic. This was both costly and inefficient, often resulting in lag time for remote workers.
\n
By comparison, Cloudflare One acts as a secure access service edge (SASE). Rather than sending traffic through a central hub, SASE is a distributed network architecture. This means employees connect to Cloudflare's network, where traffic is filtered and security policies are enforced, then traffic is routed to the internet or the corporate network.
\n
This creates a fast, secure experience for employees, allowing them to access corporate resources and applications from any location, on any device. Moreover, according to research firm Gartner, 40% of enterprises will have plans to adopt SASE by 2024, up from just 1% in 2018. That radical shift gives Cloudflare a big opportunity.
\n
More importantly, the company is executing on that opportunity. On last Wednesday, its shares skyrocketed another 95.6% after the company announced it would launch an exclusive web platform for retail investors. Shareholders would receive many perks, including free popcorn, exclusive new screenings, and the chance to speak with CEO Adam Aron.

Enthusiasm about AMC's turnaround prospects have sent its shares soaring more than 400% in the past month and 2,100% year to date. Is the stock a safe investment right now?

What's behind the hype?

During the first quarter of 2021, AMC operated 585 of its domestic theaters at just 15% to 60% capacity, while only 27% of its 133 international ones stayed partly open. People steered clear of packed indoor movie screenings with the coronavirus pandemic still going strong, but that's less of a risk as more of the U.S. population has been vaccinated.

Hence, investors are betting that AMC's revenue and earnings will experience a massive rebound starting in the second quarter. In 2019, the company generated $5.42 billion from ticket, concessions (food and beverage), and entertainment sales and posted a free cash flow of $84 million.

But there's more. The pandemic also led to extended production delays, as social distancing can be difficult on a movie set. Many producers also did not want to release completed films in a purely digital format and miss out on lucrative box office revenue.

There is now a massive backlog of new films from blockbuster franchise properties such as Avatar, Dungeons & Dragons, Ghostbusters, Halloween, Kingsman, The Matrix, Minecraft, Mission: Impossible, and Tomb Raider, as well as several new offerings from the comic book universes of DC and Marvel. They are all scheduled to be released by the end of 2022.

The schedule is so packed that prominent films like Black Widow and Cinderella are set to hit theaters within two weeks of one another in July. Given its sheer size, AMC might even see its box office revenue hit record highs in 2022.

Can you count on AMC?

Generally speaking, most investors tend to buy on emotion and justify with reason. Now is probably time to look at the latter. When the stock was trading for just $12 last month, it looked pretty undervalued.

However, things have changed as AMC's market cap has surged to nearly $25 billion. To put things into perspective, the company's market cap was less than one-fifth of that amount in 2016, before streaming services like Netflix gained momentum and took away some of its market share.

What's more, AMC has $5.4 billion in long-term debt and owes $4.9 billion per year in theater rent. On last Wednesday, its shares skyrocketed another 95.6% after the company announced it would launch an exclusive web platform for retail investors. Shareholders would receive many perks, including free popcorn, exclusive new screenings, and the chance to speak with CEO Adam Aron.Enthusiasm about AMC's turnaround prospects have sent its shares soaring more than 400% in the past month and 2,100% year to date. Is the stock a safe investment right now?Image source: Getty Images. What's behind the hype?During the first quarter of 2021, AMC operated 585 of its domestic theaters at just 15% to 60% capacity, while only 27% of its 133 international ones stayed partly open. People steered clear of packed indoor movie screenings with the coronavirus pandemic still going strong, but that's less of a risk as more of the U.S. population has been vaccinated.Hence, investors are betting that AMC's revenue and earnings will experience a massive rebound starting in the second quarter. They are all scheduled to be released by the end of 2022.The schedule is so packed that prominent films like Black Widow and Cinderella are set to hit theaters within two weeks of one another in July. Given its sheer size, AMC might even see its box office revenue hit record highs in 2022.Can you count on AMC?Generally speaking, most investors tend to buy on emotion and justify with reason. Even in its heyday, the company operated at razor-thin margins. Now its balance sheet looks even worse as liabilities outpace its assets by over $2 billion. For these reasons, it's probably a good time to take profits on the stock and consolidate gains. But watch for its next moveBased on the poor fundamentals (and experience with market bubbles), it can be very tempting to see the recent rally as nothing more than a pump-and-dump scheme or a total scam.

Even in its heyday, the company operated at razor-thin margins. Now its balance sheet looks even worse as liabilities outpace its assets by over $2 billion. For these reasons, it's probably a good time to take profits on the stock and consolidate gains.

But watch for its next move

Based on the poor fundamentals (and experience with market bubbles), it can be very tempting to see the recent rally as nothing more than a pump-and-dump scheme or a total scam. But there is something that even prudent investors are missing.

With a $25 billion market cap, AMC only has to issue 22% more shares to raise cash to pay off its entire debt balance. That's right: The company has the potential to do a \"soft reset\" and start afresh. The returns would be immediate, as after closing, it would no longer have to pay $151.5 million per quarter in interest. In the first quarter of 2021, the company's interest expense outweighed its total revenue.

Not only would its profit margins increase, but it could also use new cash to increase its theater count, upgrade its recliner seats and big screens, introduce dine-in restaurants at its locations, and more. Since there is still a lot of demand from retail investors at these levels, I don't think it would have trouble finding buyers for the offering, either.

In fact, the company did just that on June 3. AMC sold 11.5 million shares of stock hours after announcing the offering, raising $587.4 million in much-needed cash. The stock fell by more than 30% from the previous day's close before recovering. Investors should continue to expect further dilutions ahead, as the new capital is still not enough for a soft reset of its liabilities.

Overall, AMC stock is very overvalued at these levels. But thanks to the help of 10.3 million traders/followers/influencers of WallStreetBets, the company now has the option to refinance or eliminate its crippling liabilities. If the share price comes down to something more reasonable (say, $20), I'd definitely give the new AMC a chance. Last year, attendance and revenue fell 79% and 77%, respectively. And despite reopening roughly one-third of its international theaters and two-thirds of its domestic theaters, its performance has actually worsened this year.
No, but rising bond yields are sparking a nerve-racking rotation below the surface","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1145536641","media":"marketwatch","summary":"Rotation pushes Nasdaq into correction territory as bond yields continue rise.\n\nNever mind the hasht","content":"
\n Rotation pushes Nasdaq into correction territory as bond yields continue rise.\n
\n
Never mind the hashtags, the stock market remains far from “crash” territory, as anyone with a working memory of last March’s pandemic-inspired selloff, much less the global financial crisis of 2008, the dot-com bubble burst in 2000 or October 1987 would recall.
\n
But a rotation away from the market’s pandemic-era leaders, inspired by a sudden jump in bond yields, certainly does appear to be underway, and volatility can be unsettling to some investors.
\n
That could help explain why the term #stockmarketcrash was trending on Twitter Thursday, even though the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA and the S&P 500 SPX remain far from even entering what’s known as a market correction, defined as a pullback of 10% from a recent peak, let alone a crash.
\n
The question investors should ask before tripping the alarm bells, however, is whether the price action is surprising or out of the ordinary, Brad McMillan, chief investment officer at Commonwealth Financial Network, told MarketWatch in a phone interview.
\n
And the answer is no, given that a backup in bond yields, which seems to largely reflect increasingly upbeat economic expectations, looks to be the main culprit, McMillan said.
\n
While the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite COMP on Thursday entered correction territory, having registered a 10% drop from its recent high point, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA is still just 3.4% below an all-time high set last month. The S&P 500, the large-cap U.S. benchmark, was off less than 5% down from its recent record.
\n
Thursday’s market weakness echoed the wobble seen last week. Both bouts of selling were sparked by a selloff in the Treasury bond market, which pushed up yields. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note BX:TMUBMUSD10Y, which last week spiked to a more-than-one-year high at 1.6%, pushed back above 1.5% on Thursday. Remarks by Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell seemed not to calm concerns that a potential pickup in inflation could see the central bank begin to scale back monetary stimulus earlier than expected, notwithstanding a pledge to let the economy run hot.
\n
To keep the day’s moves in perspective, the Nasdaq finished with a loss of 2.1%. The Dow was down more than 700 points at its session low, ending the day with a loss of 345.95 points, or 1%. The S&P 500 shed 1.2%. Those are sharp daily drops, but they are not extraordinary.
\n
And it’s not unusual for stocks to begin pulling back as yields begin to rise, McMillan noted. It’s also not surprising that highflying growth stocks, which have seen valuations stretched in the post-pandemic rally, bear the brunt of the selling pressure.
\n
Investors appear to be taking profits on those highfliers and using the proceeds to buy stocks of companies in sectors more sensitive to the economic cycle.
\n
While rising yields can be a positive sign in the early stages of a bull market, signaling stronger economic growth ahead, the market rotation can be unnerving for investors, said Lindsey Bell, chief investment strategist for Ally Invest, in a note.
\n
“And higher yields tend to hit highfliers harder. That’s why we’ve seen stocks like Tesla TSLA and Peloton PTON fall more than 30% this year,” she said.
\n
Indeed, the outsize weighting of tech- and tech-related shares in major indexes can leave them vulnerable to weakness as that process takes hold.
\n
The price action of mega technology and discretionary stocks — Apple Inc. AAPL, Microsoft Corp. MSFT, Amazon.com Inc. AMZN, Facebook Inc. FB, Google parent Alphabet Inc. GOOG GOOGL, Tesla Inc. and Nvidia Corp. NVDA — now make up 24% of the S&P 500, noted technical analyst Mark Arbeter, president of Arbeter Investments.
\n
“The weakness in large-cap tech has been weighing on the broad market averages, sparking concerns of a market top and the end of the cycle. From our perspective, breadth remains strong, a characteristic that is typically not present at market tops,” said Kevin Dempter, an analyst at Renaissance Macro Research, in a Thursday note.
\n
Small-cap discretionary stocks are at absolute highs, as well as multiyear highs relative to large-cap discretionary stocks, he said, which is a sign of broad-based participation. Trends are also strong for sectors, like energy and banks, that tend to be winners in higher-yield environments, while more economically sensitive groups like transports and services are also benefiting.
\n
“Rather than a market top, we think this is rotational in nature with limited downside and going forward we want to be overweight high yield winners like banks and energy as there is likely further outperformance in these groups to come,” Dempter wrote.
\n
So what about that crash? After the recent bond-inspired hiccups, the Dow and S&P 500 remain far from correction territory, much less a bear market, which is defined as a 20% drop from a recent peak.
\n
Not all bear markets are the product of a crash. And crash, itself, is a more nebulous term, implying a sudden and sharp fall. Some analysts define a crash as a one-day drop of 5% or more. Others see a typical crash as a sudden, sharp drop that takes the market into a bear market and beyond in a matter of a few sessions.
\n
That was the case last year as it became apparent the COVID-19 pandemic would bring the U.S. and global economy to a near halt. The S&P 500, the large-cap U.S. benchmark, was off less than 5% down from its recent record.\nThursday’s market weakness echoed the wobble seen last week. Remarks by Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell seemed not to calm concerns that a potential pickup in inflation could see the central bank begin to scale back monetary stimulus earlier than expected, notwithstanding a pledge to let the economy run hot.\nTo keep the day’s moves in perspective, the Nasdaq finished with a loss of 2.1%. The Dow was down more than 700 points at its session low, ending the day with a loss of 345.95 points, or 1%. The S&P 500 shed 1.2%. Those are sharp daily drops, but they are not extraordinary.\nAnd it’s not unusual for stocks to begin pulling back as yields begin to rise, McMillan noted. It’s also not surprising that highflying growth stocks, which have seen valuations stretched in the post-pandemic rally, bear the brunt of the selling pressure.\nInvestors appear to be taking profits on those highfliers and using the proceeds to buy stocks of companies in sectors more sensitive to the economic cycle.\nWhile rising yields can be a positive sign in the early stages of a bull market, signaling stronger economic growth ahead, the market rotation can be unnerving for investors, said Lindsey Bell, chief investment strategist for Ally Invest, in a note.\n“And higher yields tend to hit highfliers harder. That’s why we’ve seen stocks like Tesla TSLA and Peloton PTON fall more than 30% this year,” she said.\nIndeed, the outsize weighting of tech- and tech-related shares in major indexes can leave them vulnerable to weakness as that process takes hold.\nThe price action of mega technology and discretionary stocks — Apple Inc. AAPL, Microsoft Corp. MSFT, Amazon.com Inc. AMZN, Facebook Inc. FB, Google parent Alphabet Inc. GOOG GOOGL, Tesla Inc. and Nvidia Corp. NVDA — now make up 24% of the S&P 500, noted technical analyst Mark Arbeter, president of Arbeter Investments.\n“The weakness in large-cap tech has been weighing on the broad market averages, sparking concerns of a market top and the end of the cycle. From our perspective, breadth remains strong, a characteristic that is typically not present at market tops,” said Kevin Dempter, an analyst at Renaissance Macro Research, in a Thursday note.\nSmall-cap discretionary stocks are at absolute highs, as well as multiyear highs relative to large-cap discretionary stocks, he said, which is a sign of broad-based participation. Trends are also strong for sectors, like energy and banks, that tend to be winners in higher-yield environments, while more economically sensitive groups like transports and services are also benefiting.\n“Rather than a market top, we think this is rotational in nature with limited downside and going forward we want to be overweight high yield winners like banks and energy as there is likely further outperformance in these groups to come,” Dempter wrote.\nSo what about that crash? After the recent bond-inspired hiccups, the Dow and S&P 500 remain far from correction territory, much less a bear market, which is defined as a 20% drop from a recent peak.\nNot all bear markets are the product of a crash. And crash, itself, is a more nebulous term, implying a sudden and sharp fall. Some analysts define a crash as a one-day drop of 5% or more. Others see a typical crash as a sudden, sharp drop that takes the market into a bear market and beyond in a matter of a few sessions.\nThat was the case last year as it became apparent the COVID-19 pandemic would bring the U.S. and global economy to a near halt. The S&P 500 plunged from a record close on Feb. 19, dropping around 34% before bottoming on March 23.\nSince those March lows, the S&P 500 remains up nearly 72%, while the Dow has rallied nearly 70%.
