that is prone to sharp price volatility and Monday’s announcement by Tesla was described by some&nbsp;corporate finance professionals&nbsp;as an unnecessary addition of risk to the vehicle maker’s balance sheet in the form of currency or a commodity, depending on how you classify bitcoin.</p>\n<p>While it’s not clear, at this point, why Musk &amp; Co. have opted to expose the company to the possible risk of owning bitcoin, here are a few reasons why the revolutionary company may have aligned itself with the crypto crowd.</p>\n<p><b>Diversification</b></p>\n<p>Tesla made it clear in its statement filed with its regulator the Securities and Exchange Commission that it sees bitcoin as a chance to diversify its cash and cash-equivalent holdings.</p>\n<p>Corporations usually hold excess cash and/or cash-equivalents, like Treasury bills or commercial paper on their books to provide operational liquidity and generate returns while limiting risks.</p>\n<p>Tesla wrote, “we updated our investment policy to provide us with more flexibility to further diversify and maximize returns on our cash that is not required to maintain adequate operating liquidity.”</p>\n<p>The move isn’t without risk, Tesla acknowledges as the price of bitcoin could slump.</p>\n<p>“If we hold digital assets and their values decrease relative to our purchase prices, our financial condition may be harmed,” the company acknowledges.</p>\n<p>But a single bitcoin, which has soared 62% so far this year, could easily be headed for a six-digit value if bullish momentum continues to build, which would make Musk look smart.</p>\n<p><b>Publicity stunt?</b></p>\n<p>“Thankfully, Elon Musk on Monday once again ensured no one would be bored, with the unexpected announcement that Tesla will buy&nbsp;bitcoin&nbsp;and accept them as payment for vehicles,” writes Craig Erlam, senior market analyst at Oanda, in a Tuesday research note.</p>\n<p>The analyst referred to the move as a “publicity stunt,” a move that everbody is talking about, but there are a number of ways to think about it.</p>\n<p><b>Brand management</b></p>\n<p>Bitcoin is associated with a group of iconoclastic founders who were attempting to break the mold on payments and fiat money. That was the idea behind cryptos being written into code back in 2009 by a person or persons known as Satoshi Nakamoto.</p>\n<p>Those rebellious notions align somewhat with Musk’s own agenda of disruption. Tesla is making electric-powered vehicles in a world that has thus far been dominated by fossil-fuel driven cars.</p>\n<p>Moreover, Tesla’s direct-to-customer sales model also is viewed as trendsetting, since many companies sell their cars through unaffiliated dealerships.</p>\n<p>Bitcoin’s image as a decentralized asset, not controlled by any one body, also fits with Tesla’s image and that of its leader Musk.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/33c354045da9bf1b0b8bbe93d0eb9e43\" tg-width=\"947\" tg-height=\"673\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p><b>The future of $</b></p>\n<p>Tesla’s $1.5 billion investment in bitcoin could also be a simple hedge against the hegemony of the U.S. dollar as the world’s reserve currency since World War Two.</p>\n<p>Bitcoin, or something like it, represents the future of payment systems to many supporters, even if it isn’t currently an effective means of exchange due to its current volatility.</p>\n<p>“Yesterday’s move by Tesla to invest in&nbsp;bitcoin&nbsp;and start accepting it as payment for its own products really moved the needle,” wrote Simon Peters, cryptoasset analyst at multiasset investment platform eToro, in emailed comments.</p>\n<p>The eToro analyst said that there are unconfirmed talks about technology behemoths Apple Inc.&nbsp;and Google-parent Alphabet Inc.,linking it to their own payment systems.</p>\n<p>Musk is viewed as an innovator tied to electric vehicles, batteries and space exploration via SpaceX, but one of his early ventures was in payments.</p>\n<p><b>Writing on the wall</b></p>\n<p>The&nbsp;Wall Street Journal notes&nbsp;that, the Tesla CEO invested most of the $22 million he earned from the sale of an internet business into a new startup, X.com, which became PayPal Holdings&nbsp;about 20 years ago.</p>\n<p>PayPal currently is among the vanguard of bitcoin revolution. PayPal&nbsp;back in November opened up its cryptocurrency platform to all U.S. customers after conducting a more narrow rollout.</p>\n<p>Moreover, several high-profile Wall Street investors, including Stanley Druckenmiller and Paul Tudor Jones, have embraced bitcoin. Famed investor Bill Miller, founder of Miller Value Partners, in&nbsp;a letter to clients&nbsp;earlier this month&nbsp;published on the firm’s website, reaffirmed his bullish outlook on bitcoin.</p>\n<p>In other words, Tesla and Musk may be among the biggest to wade into the crypto pool, but a growing cadre of investors are starting to view the volatile digital-ledger-backed cryptos as a bona fide asset.</p>\n<p>“Corporate adoption takes another leap forward with Tesla announcement,” writes Devin Ryan, analyst at JMP Securities in a Monday research note.</p>\n<p>The researcher, along with fellow analyst Brian McKenna, noted they “believe the building ‘network effect’ around bitcoin is moving the broader crypto asset class into the mainstream, and with many hundreds of billions of dollars of value in infrastructure supporting the asset class, we see the already substantial (and growing) vested interest in its success as bullish for the industry.”</p>\n<p>On Tuesday, bitcoin touched a record high around $48,000 before pulling back, as the Dow Jones Industrial Average,the S&amp;P 500&nbsp;and the Nasdaq Composite&nbsp;indexes have seen relatively tepid trade on the day.</p>","source":"market_watch","collect":0,"html":"<!DOCTYPE html>\n<html>\n<head>\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; That was the idea behind cryptos being written into code back in 2009 by a person or persons known as Satoshi Nakamoto.\nThose rebellious notions align somewhat with Musk’s own agenda of disruption. Tesla is making electric-powered vehicles in a world that has thus far been dominated by fossil-fuel driven cars.\nMoreover, Tesla’s direct-to-customer sales model also is viewed as trendsetting, since many companies sell their cars through unaffiliated dealerships.\nBitcoin’s image as a decentralized asset, not controlled by any one body, also fits with Tesla’s image and that of its leader Musk.\n\nThe future of $\nTesla’s $1.5 billion investment in bitcoin could also be a simple hedge against the hegemony of the U.S. dollar as the world’s reserve currency since World War Two.\nBitcoin, or something like it, represents the future of payment systems to many supporters, even if it isn’t currently an effective means of exchange due to its current volatility.\n“Yesterday’s move by Tesla to invest in bitcoin and start accepting it as payment for its own products really moved the needle,” wrote Simon Peters, cryptoasset analyst at multiasset investment platform eToro, in emailed comments.\nThe eToro analyst said that there are unconfirmed talks about technology behemoths Apple Inc. and Google-parent Alphabet Inc.,linking it to their own payment systems.\nMusk is viewed as an innovator tied to electric vehicles, batteries and space exploration via SpaceX, but one of his early ventures was in payments.\nWriting on the wall\nThe Wall Street Journal notes that, the Tesla CEO invested most of the $22 million he earned from the sale of an internet business into a new startup, X.com, which became PayPal Holdings about 20 years ago.\nPayPal currently is among the vanguard of bitcoin revolution. But some fans of trendy momentum stocks aren't giving up on them just yet.</p>\n<p>That's the message from Cathie Wood of Ark Invest — who has become one of the&nbsp;more influential voices on Wall Street&nbsp;and is a major backer of&nbsp;Tesla&nbsp;(TSLA)— and two other titans of growth investing, who shared their investment insights Thursday.</p>\n<p>\"We've seen higher valuation stocks hit hard this year. But the growth for these innovative companies will still be treated well over time,\" Wood said during a webcast hosted by&nbsp;Cboe&nbsp;(CBOE)&nbsp;Global Markets.</p>\n<p>Wood joined Kevin O'Leary of \"Shark Tank\" fame (he also runs a family of&nbsp;O'Shares ETFs) and Jan van Eck, whose firm recently launched the&nbsp;BUZZ ETF&nbsp;that tracks&nbsp;stocks popular on social media, for the Cboe chat.</p>\n<p>Wood noted that investors are shifting their money into more so-called cyclical areas — those dependent on the success of the economy, like retailers and airlines — and said that's a good thing. She's encouraged to see that the broader market rally is broadening even further.</p>\n<p><b>The bullish case for growth stocks still exists</b></p>\n<p>As the economy continues its fragile recovery, fears about bond yields and inflation have been high. But all three of the fund managers said they are not too worried about these trends hurting growth stocks.</p>\n<p>They also stressed that younger individual investors will continue to play a big role in the market thanks to the rise of zero commission brokerage firms: \"There are a lot of retail investors playing in the market thanks to Robinhood and Coinbase. Individual investors are more engaged,\" van Eck said.</p>\n<p>He says investors should flock more to companies that have a big competitive advantage, such as those in his firm'sWide Moat ETF(MOAT)— which invests in stocks that are dominant in their respective fields, like its key holdings including&nbsp;Charles Schwab&nbsp;(SCHW),Intel&nbsp;(INTC),Microsoft&nbsp;(MSFT)&nbsp;and&nbsp;Amazon(AMZN).</p>\n<p>O'Leary, too, believes the stock market boom can last, saying he $1.9 trillion in new stimulus is \"free money\" for many investors. But he's not buying into the notion that cyclical stocks can continue to outperform tech for much longer.</p>\n<p>\"Yes, people are seeking quality. But some sectors are permanently damaged and airlines are one of them due to technology,\" he said. \"I don't need to fly to Dubai as much anymore for meetings when were doing Zoom calls every week.\"</p>\n<p>O'Leary said he is also willing to make some speculative bets on emerging industries that aren't getting a lot of attention. For example, O'Leary's firm owns shares of&nbsp;MindMed&nbsp;(MMEDF), which is working on developing legal psychedelic medications that can be used to help treat depression, anxiety and other mental health disorders.</p>\n<p>Wood is also investing in innovative health care companies, with oneArk ETF devoted to genomics&nbsp;(ARKG). And she thinks younger investors, many of whom are inheriting money from baby boomers, will continue to gravitate toward more dynamic fields like robotics and alternative energy. So she's not too concerned that the recent rebound in value stocks spells an end to the tech renaissance.</p>\n<p>\"A lot of companies catering to short-term investors who wanted profits now invested more in stock buybacks and dividends over innovation,\" Wood said. \"That puts them in harm's way.\"</p>\n<p><b>'Prime time' for bitcoin coming?</b></p>\n<p>Wood also thinks bitcoin is ready for \"prime time\" and that prices will continue climbing over the long haul as more companies will adopt crypto-friendly strategies like Tesla andSquar(SQ)have done. In fact, Wood said she thinks it makes sense for investors to have between 2.5% and 6.5% of their assets in bitcoin, adding that her funds are betting on crypto primarily through the publicly traded Grayscale Bitcoin Trus.(GBTC)</p>\n<p>O'Leary, meanwhile, had been somewhat skeptical of bitcoin a few years ago. But the growth for these innovative companies will still be treated well over time,\" Wood said during a webcast hosted by Cboe (CBOE) Global Markets.\nWood joined Kevin O'Leary of \"Shark Tank\" fame (he also runs a family of O'Shares ETFs) and Jan van Eck, whose firm recently launched the BUZZ ETF that tracks stocks popular on social media, for the Cboe chat.\nWood noted that investors are shifting their money into more so-called cyclical areas — those dependent on the success of the economy, like retailers and airlines — and said that's a good thing. She's encouraged to see that the broader market rally is broadening even further.\nThe bullish case for growth stocks still exists\nAs the economy continues its fragile recovery, fears about bond yields and inflation have been high. But all three of the fund managers said they are not too worried about these trends hurting growth stocks.\nThey also stressed that younger individual investors will continue to play a big role in the market thanks to the rise of zero commission brokerage firms: \"There are a lot of retail investors playing in the market thanks to Robinhood and Coinbase. Individual investors are more engaged,\" van Eck said.\nHe says investors should flock more to companies that have a big competitive advantage, such as those in his firm'sWide Moat ETF(MOAT)— which invests in stocks that are dominant in their respective fields, like its key holdings including Charles Schwab (SCHW),Intel (INTC),Microsoft (MSFT) and Amazon(AMZN).\nO'Leary, too, believes the stock market boom can last, saying he $1.9 trillion in new stimulus is \"free money\" for many investors. But he's not buying into the notion that cyclical stocks can continue to outperform tech for much longer.\n\"Yes, people are seeking quality. But some sectors are permanently damaged and airlines are one of them due to technology,\" he said. \"I don't need to fly to Dubai as much anymore for meetings when were doing Zoom calls every week.\"\nO'Leary said he is also willing to make some speculative bets on emerging industries that aren't getting a lot of attention. In fact, Wood said she thinks it makes sense for investors to have between 2.5% and 6.5% of their assets in bitcoin, adding that her funds are betting on crypto primarily through the publicly traded Grayscale Bitcoin Trus.(GBTC)\nO'Leary, meanwhile, had been somewhat skeptical of bitcoin a few years ago. He’s really caught between a rock and a hard place.”What’s got the market’s attention recently has been a pickup in government bond yields, particularly further out on the curve.While the 2-year is unchanged for 2021, the 5-year has risen nearly a quarter percentage point as of Friday’s market close while the benchmark 10-year note has seen its yield jump 41 basis points to 1.34%, an area where it hasn’t been since around the same time in 2020, before the worst of the pandemic struck.The 30-year bond yield has surged even more, leaping nearly half a point this year to 2.14%.Powell’s dilemma is this: Rising bond yields could be signaling the reflation of the economy that the Fed has been pushing and are therefore higher for good reasons. However, should the trend get out of control, the Fed then might have to tighten policy faster than the market expects, offsetting some of the good that has come with the burst in yields.Complicating the matter is that markets also might not like it if Powell is overly complacent.“If this testimony was behind closed doors, I think Jay Powell would be quite pleased with what he sees in the economy and the markets,” Sheets said, using the Fed chair’s nickname. “But given that it’s public, he’s got to be careful. If he’s too sanguine about the rise in rates, the markets are going to take that as a significant green light for rates to rip higher.”“The Fed is comfortable with an organic rise in rates reflecting shifts in views on growth and inflation,” he added. “But I think the Fed also wants to be careful that it doesn’t create and amplify a self-sustaining dynamic that pushes rates higher for other reasons.”Those “other reasons” primarily would be fears that the economy could overheat.Stimulus and more stimulusThe Fed has run historically loose policy for the past year, dropping its benchmark borrowing rate to near zero and buying at least $120 billion of bonds each month. That’s on top of a series of since-expired lending and liquidity programs implemented in the early days of the Covid-19 crisis.Along with that, Congress has come in with more than $3 trillion of fiscal stimulus and could approve up to $1.9 trillion more by the end of week.All that has transpired amid an economy that, besides a still-troubling employment problem primarily in the service sector, is humming. Wall Street is taking up first-quarter growth expectations and market-based indicators of inflation are rising.That’s why Powell’s tightrope walk this week will be all the more compelling.“The market mood has changed,”Mohamed El-Erian, chief economic advisor at Allianz, said Monday on CNBC’s “Squawk Box.” It’s no longer whether yields are going higher, it’s when is the move too big. That’s what the market’s trying to figure out.”Investors are particularly concerned whether all the stimulus isn’t going overboard and threatening to destabilize the economy over the longer run.“I can predict that the yellow lights are flashing all over the Fed because of the [yields] move and the steepening of the yield curve, and the Fed may do more to try to control yields,” El-Erian said.Fed officials have largely dismissed so-called yield curve control to use its bond purchasing power to control rates between various fixed income maturities.But the market could force the Fed’s hand, and Powell is likely to get asked about where he stands on what tools the Fed has to calm market issues. He has repeatedly stressed that the central bank has the weapons to control inflation, but deploying those comes with a price. Markets used to low yields and companies accustomed to cheap borrowing costs could get rattled by an unexpected Fed move.Evidence of how clearly the market is watching the issue came Monday morning, when European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde said she is “closely monitoring the evolution of longer-term nominal bond yields.” Her words were enough to calm a jittery market and turn what had been an opening loss on Wall Street into a mixed market with the Dow up in early afternoon trading. Treasury yields were mostly flat on the day.Tom Lee, managing partner and head of research at Fundstrat Global Advisors, noted that his “clients have already expressed some apprehension about this week. Earnings per share for Q4 came in at a net loss of $2.47, far higher than the net loss of 73 cents the Street was expecting.Marketing outlays, and higher subscriber and G&A costs were responsible for the heavy losses.However, there were many positives to counter the negative bottom-line figure, according to Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter.FUBO generated quarterly revenue of $105.07 million, higher than its pre-announced range of $94–98 million and ahead of the estimates by $8.53 million.The subscriber counts also came in higher than the pre-announced figure; FUBO ended 2020 with 547,880 paid subscribers vs. the 545,000 guide and up by 73% from the same period last year. Ad revenue also significantly increased, up by approximately 150% to $13 million.For FY21, FUBO raised its revenue guidance from the prior $415 – 435 million range to between $460 – 470 million, higher at the mid-point than the $461 million in sales the Street had guided for.While the company expects a seasonal subscriber dip in Q1, it anticipates seeing out FY21 with 760,000 to 770,000 paid subscribers.FUBO will also start integrating sports wagering into its platform later this year, first with a free to play (FTP) wagering app in 3Q21 and a sportsbook in the fourth quarter.“With its raised FY:21 revenue guidance and robust Ad ARPU growth demonstrated throughout FY:20, its recently closed acquisition of Vigtory which advances its sports wagering business, and its late-January cash infusion, we are optimistic about fuboTV’s prospects,” Pachter said.Pachter believes the sportsbook’s launch won’t bring in much revenue at first but says the free-to-play product has “the potential to drive word of mouth about fuboTV and ultimately could serve as a catalyst to drive new subscribers.”As a result, Pachter reiterated an Outperform (i.e. Buy) rating, while lifting his price target from $50 to $53. When we talk about the Asian EV market, we’re predominantly talking about China, which still accounts for around 90% of sales,” said Baisden.\n“But there’s a lot of supportive policy that has been rolled out in Europe, particularly in the EU, over the last year in response to coronavirus … both on the infrastructure side and on national levels in terms of incentives,” she said.\nA report by Cairn Energy Research Advisors, a consulting firmfocused on the battery and electric vehicle industries,predicted last year that there will be a surge in electric vehicle sales in 2021.It comesas countries around the world push new programs to encourage consumers to buy battery-powered vehicles.\nThe report also said thebiggest growth in sales for that sector will take place in Europe, mainly because EU governments are committed to lowering carbon dioxide emissions.\nChallenges for Japan and India\nBaisden said the weak uptake of electric vehicles in Asia – mainly in countries like Japan and India — is due to a combination of factors.\nWhile there is underlying demand in Japan, “we’re still waiting for concrete incentive plans,” she pointed out. “We heard in January that there were plans in place to start bringing out financial incentives for purchasing on a local level, particularly with Tokyo having a goal to have all electric car sales by 2030.”\nAs for India, the electric vehicle sector is likely to receive a boost from Elon Musk’s electric carmaker Tesla.\n\n It has much lower average income than the other Asian markets. Lucid’s SPAC and ARK Invest’s ETFs carry the whiff of the late-1990s technology bubble.</p>\n<p>Ignore stock valuations and companies’ fundamentals at your peril.</p>\n<p>Churchill Capital Corp. ,a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) that had been rumored to merge with a Tesla-wannabe, Lucid Motors, finally announced Monday night that it is indeed going to do so. And in a classic Wall Street reaction, the market “sold the news” after long having “bought the rumor.”</p>\n<p>CCIV was up 500% from when it went public as a blank-check company, and today the stock market has wiped half of what its market value was perceived to be Monday at noon. This is a stock that I had warned about earlier this month as one of the many “Random Number Generators” (RNGs) that should be avoided. People and institutions who had for weeks been buying CCIV at $40, $50, $60 or even $70 per share have suddenly seen a huge wipeout of value.</p>\n<p>They’re now, maybe, looking around at their other RNG SPACs and wondering if they should actually look at the valuations.</p>\n<p>Reviewing this week’s ugly stock-market action in a broader context, you might note that Tesla Inc.&nbsp;at $900 — after the company reported a not-so-great quarter that included some questions about gross margin expansion — is looking like it could have been a top-maker itself.</p>\n<p>Many questionable EV stocks continued to rally for a week or two before getting their comeuppance this week. At least for a day or two. It will be interesting to look back in a month to see what the non-TSLA EV stocks do from here. I expect most to move much lower even than today’s quotes, which are much lower than last week’s quotes.</p>\n<p><b>Piling into ARK</b></p>\n<p>These days everybody wants to be Cathie Wood from ARK Invest. She was an early bull on Tesla and bitcoinBTCUSD,6.03%and some of the the other themes that long-time followers of mine and I got into even earlier than she did. Her actively managed ETF, ARK Innovation ETF&nbsp;being the most famous, has performed very well, and her commentary has been spot on for a couple years now.</p>\n<p>But I have bad news. Even as I am a fan of Cathie’s and wish her and her investors all the best, I can’t help but think of the story of George Gilder, with whom I’ve become friends in the decades since&nbsp;I wrote this in 2001 for TheStreet.com.&nbsp;(I just realized this article was published just two weeks after 9/11.):</p>\n<p><i>“Investors need to heed a few rules when evaluating companies in their portfolio: Cash is king, as cash flow becomes increasingly difficult to judge on an ongoing basis. Look for real revenue on the books. As tech guru George Gilder and his followers have learned (at least, I hope they have by now), great technology doesn’t translate into a great investment. Companies need sales channels, and they need products for which there are immediate uses. You might be surprised that I didn’t mention profitability in that list. Profitability is naturally important, but even companies like Cisco probably won’t be profitable this quarter and perhaps for several more, as they’ll have to continue aligning capacity, employees and inventory with demand.</i></p>\n<p><i>Let me repeat the caveat here: You’ll never see the type of returns, at least in telecom and telecom-tech stocks, that we saw almost daily in the late 1990s. That’s another reason why these tech mutual fund guys, who keep preaching to stay the course, will take forever to get back to even.”</i></p>\n<p><b>The hangover</b></p>\n<p>Telecom and telecom-tech stocks never again saw the kind of returns they did back in the late 1990s. I think the same can be said of EV stocks and many other of the favorites that Cathie Wood and her crowd of blind followers are these days plowing into as they put their money to work regardless of valuations.</p>\n<p>Here’s what George had to say&nbsp;in 2002:</p>\n<p><i>“In retrospect, it’s obvious that I should’ve subtly said, ‘Hey, things have gotten out of hand at JDS Uniphase, and it’s not worth what you’d have to pay for it,’” he says. If I had said, ‘Hey, this is a top, you should all sell,’ it would’ve been a cataclysmic event,” he says. “I’d think about telling people that they should sell half their holdings, and each time I’d conclude that my subscribers would be enraged. Lucid’s SPAC and ARK Invest’s ETFs carry the whiff of the late-1990s technology bubble.\nIgnore stock valuations and companies’ fundamentals at your peril.\nChurchill Capital Corp. ,a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) that had been rumored to merge with a Tesla-wannabe, Lucid Motors, finally announced Monday night that it is indeed going to do so. And in a classic Wall Street reaction, the market “sold the news” after long having “bought the rumor.”\nCCIV was up 500% from when it went public as a blank-check company, and today the stock market has wiped half of what its market value was perceived to be Monday at noon. This is a stock that I had warned about earlier this month as one of the many “Random Number Generators” (RNGs) that should be avoided. People and institutions who had for weeks been buying CCIV at $40, $50, $60 or even $70 per share have suddenly seen a huge wipeout of value.\nThey’re now, maybe, looking around at their other RNG SPACs and wondering if they should actually look at the valuations.\nReviewing this week’s ugly stock-market action in a broader context, you might note that Tesla Inc. at $900 — after the company reported a not-so-great quarter that included some questions about gross margin expansion — is looking like it could have been a top-maker itself.\nMany questionable EV stocks continued to rally for a week or two before getting their comeuppance this week. At least for a day or two. It will be interesting to look back in a month to see what the non-TSLA EV stocks do from here. I expect most to move much lower even than today’s quotes, which are much lower than last week’s quotes.\nPiling into ARK\nThese days everybody wants to be Cathie Wood from ARK Invest. She was an early bull on Tesla and bitcoinBTCUSD,6.03%and some of the the other themes that long-time followers of mine and I got into even earlier than she did. Her actively managed ETF, ARK Innovation ETF being the most famous, has performed very well, and her commentary has been spot on for a couple years now.\nBut I have bad news.
