COVID-19, 7% inflation, and markets that touched all-time highs. It was also the year of the meme stock, in which companies like GameStop (NYSE:GME) and AMC Entertainment Holdings (NYSE:AMC) skyrocketed while being pushed by message boards like WallStreetBets of Reddit.

Palantir Technologies (NYSE:PLTR) also routinely appears among the 10 most-popular stocks on WallStreetBets. But despite its popularity, it underperformed the market in 2021. Is this a sign of what's to come?

Source: Getty Images

Palantir is a software data management company. Specifically, the company creates platforms for integrating, managing, and securing data for their clients. Using the platform, the client is able to quickly answer complicated queries using huge amounts of data. Palantir offers clients three main products; Gotham, Foundry, and Apollo.

Gotham is an Artificial Intelligence(AI)-ready operating system. This system enables faster decision making by analyzing complex data for insights. It has been used for disaster relief and by defense agencies and is also available commercially. Foundry is described by Palantir as the "operating system for the modern enterprise." It is an integrated platform that provides analytics, model-building, visualization, and other functions. The Apollo product is the delivery system that powers Palantir's software platforms. It also enables customers to operate away from the public cloud which is often necessary for military organizations. Palantir services both the public and private sectors.

Palantir stock reached highs of $45 in early 2021 after debuting just a few months prior at only $10. This was during the height of the short-squeezes fueled by individual investors and message boards. The stock quickly retreated from these highs, and the share price has underperformed ever since. However, there are reasons for optimism along with reasons for continued concern.

PLTR data by YCharts

Prolific revenue growth

Palantir has not had any issues growing its revenue recently. In the third quarter of 2021, the company reported top-line sales of $392 million. This came in 36% higher than the $289 million posted in the year-ago quarter. It also grew its customer base, with commercial customers increasing 46% quarter over quarter. The company also gained large customers with deep pockets. In the third quarter, it reported deals with the U.S. Air Force, National Institutes of Health, and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. In total, the company reported 54 deals that were worth more than $1 million.

Palantir also has an excellent gross margin and adjusted operating margin. For the third quarter, the gross margin under generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) was an impressive 78%. This is an excellent sign that the company could scale successfully to GAAP net profits.

Palantir also reported an adjusted operating income of $349 million. On one hand, this is very impressive as it represents a margin of 32%. On the other hand, it highlights an issue that should give shareholders pause: the stock-based compensation (SBC) expense.

Stock-based compensation

As mentioned, Palantir reports a non-GAAP operating margin that is very impressive but continues to post GAAP operating losses. This is because the company removes SBC from the GAAP figures to arrive at the adjusted figures. Palantir uses a tremendous amount of SBC to reward executives and other employees. For the nine months ended Sept. 30, 2021, the company expensed over $611 million in SBC.

This generally causes the share count to increase and dilutes existing investors. However, it is not entirely negative. SBC also can preserve cash at a time when the company is spending heavily to grow the business. Because of the SBC, Palantir was able to post positive cash from operations through the third quarter 2021.

It also helps to attract and keep the best talent. It is no secret that the labor market is very tight. Attracting the best people can make a world of difference in the success of an enterprise. Finally, when insiders own shares of the business, their interests are aligned with those of shareholders.

The valuation looks more attractive

Growth stocks have been hit hard so far in 2022. Inflation has breached 7%, and the Federal Reserve is set to raise rates, likely several times this year. This hurts growth stocks in particular, since Wall Street values them on future cash flows.

There also appears to be a general concern that valuations had gotten a bit ahead of fundamentals in 2021. This revaluation has caused Palantir to look much more attractive lately, especially compared to some other fast-growing tech stocks, as shown below.

PLTR data by YCharts

The bottom line

Palantir remains one of the most popular stocks with individual investors, even after its underperformance in 2021 and so far in 2022. But it is not a stock built solely on hype. In fact, there is much to like in the recent results. Revenue continues to grow, and margins have expanded nicely. The company is now generating positive cash from operations, with a nice assist from its SBC program. The valuation has come down significantly, making Palantir more attractive than many other growth names. Even so, the swoon in tech stocks may not be over just yet, and investors should be cautious here.

","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Is Palantir Stock Built on Hype?
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nIs Palantir Stock Built on Hype?\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-01-23 08:26 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
We will remember 2021 for many things, such as the continuation of COVID-19, 7% inflation, and markets that touched all-time highs. He bought his first stock in the early 1940s at age 11 as the S&P 500 was on its way to a 35% dip that bottomed in 1942. Since then, he's managed through 12 more bear markets not including this one.

Despite those downturns, Buffett has managed to create billions in value for himself and the shareholders of the company he runs, Berkshire Hathaway. If any investor is qualified to share wisdom on investing in bear markets, it's Buffett.

So it makes sense to lean on his expertise to get through this tough climate with your wealth intact, right? To get you started, here are four of Buffett's famous rules for investing in a bear market.

1. Buy quality merchandise on sale

"Whether we're talking about socks or stocks, I like buying quality merchandise when it is marked down."

Buffett invests in high-quality businesses -- companies with a proven ability to create shareholder value through all economic climates. In his view, bear markets provide opportunities to buy these quality stocks at lower prices.

As an example, Buffett's response earlier this year to the tech stock sell-off was to buy more of his favorite technology company, Apple. Although Apple already comprised more than 40% of Berkshire Hathaway's portfolio, Buffett bought another 3.78 million shares.

You can mimic his strategy by identifying stocks you love for their long-term prospects. If your budget allows, increase your investing activity and pad your share counts while prices remain low.

2. Hold forever

"Our favorite holding period is forever."

When you buy stocks you'd like to hold forever, bear markets become far less stressful. Since your plan is to hold for the long run, you don't have to do anything when the market goes sideways. No reshuffling your portfolio and no guessing when share prices will bottom out. Your only job is to wait.

3. Stay calm

"The most important quality for an investor is temperament, not intellect."

It's normal and useful to second-guess your "hold forever" plan when circumstances change. Certainly, there will be times when you should drop a stock you thought was a keeper.

The distinction you must make is whether circumstances have changed permanently or temporarily. And that's easier to do when you can analyze what's happening calmly and rationally. If you let your emotions take over, they can convince you to scrap your plan, cut your losses, or take some other dramatic action that's sure to dampen your long-term returns.

4. Keep your distance

Buffett said this when asked what advice he had for investors in tough markets:"I would tell them: Don't watch the market too closely."

Let's say you're confident that your "hold forever" stocks can withstand a temporary bear market. And for that reason, you're not going to react to falling share prices. In that scenario, what's the benefit of tracking every bump along the way? There isn't one.

It's OK to keep some distance from financial headlines when the market is going crazy. He bought his first stock in the early 1940s at age 11 as the S&P 500 was on its way to a 35% dip that bottomed in 1942. Since then, he's managed through 12 more bear markets not including this one.Despite those downturns, Buffett has managed to create billions in value for himself and the shareholders of the company he runs, Berkshire Hathaway. If any investor is qualified to share wisdom on investing in bear markets, it's Buffett. So it makes sense to lean on his expertise to get through this tough climate with your wealth intact, right? To get you started, here are four of Buffett's famous rules for investing in a bear market.1. Buy quality merchandise on sale\"Whether we're talking about socks or stocks, I like buying quality merchandise when it is marked down.\"Buffett invests in high-quality businesses -- companies with a proven ability to create shareholder value through all economic climates. If your budget allows, increase your investing activity and pad your share counts while prices remain low.2. Hold forever\"Our favorite holding period is forever.\"When you buy stocks you'd like to hold forever, bear markets become far less stressful. Since your plan is to hold for the long run, you don't have to do anything when the market goes sideways. No reshuffling your portfolio and no guessing when share prices will bottom out. Your only job is to wait.3. Stay calm\"The most important quality for an investor is temperament, not intellect.\"It's normal and useful to second-guess your \"hold forever\" plan when circumstances change. Certainly, there will be times when you should drop a stock you thought was a keeper. The distinction you must make is whether circumstances have changed permanently or temporarily. And that's easier to do when you can analyze what's happening calmly and rationally. If you let your emotions take over, they can convince you to scrap your plan, cut your losses, or take some other dramatic action that's sure to dampen your long-term returns.4. Keep your distanceBuffett said this when asked what advice he had for investors in tough markets:\"I would tell them: Don't watch the market too closely.\"Let's say you're confident that your \"hold forever\" stocks can withstand a temporary bear market. And for that reason, you're not going to react to falling share prices. In that scenario, what's the benefit of tracking every bump along the way? There isn't one. It's OK to keep some distance from financial headlines when the market is going crazy. Consider it a survival strategy that helps you stay calm and stick to your investing plan.Buy or do nothingWhen a bear market sets in, you'll see Buffett mostly buy or hold. If you're questioning whether those are the right moves for your portfolio, remember this: Buffett is worth about $95 billion, and he has invested through more bear markets than almost anyone. His tactics can help you emerge from this bear market stronger and wealthier than ever.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":100,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9011311238,"gmtCreate":1648817301320,"gmtModify":1676534403689,"author":{"id":"3573471374708502","authorId":"3573471374708502","name":"RetiredPig83","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5595baccc3331b6777d7c9f0c077ecc1","crmLevel":3,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3573471374708502","authorIdStr":"3573471374708502"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Rocket Companies(RKT)$😭","listText":"$Rocket Companies(RKT)$😭","text":"$Rocket Companies(RKT)$😭","images":[{"img":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/b39795d035ff2fa92d0956c7fb34eaef","width":"828","height":"1632"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9011311238","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":105,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[{"author":{"id":"4104372119080340","authorId":"4104372119080340","name":"chongkai14","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/443c9828562ed0d81b6721b856235483","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"idStr":"4104372119080340","authorIdStr":"4104372119080340"},"content":"if you have no lack of money, just hold only. Could this be yet another opportunity to buy the dip?

The rally has stalled out for now. After climbing an encouraging 18% in the last several days of Q1, Apple stock has dropped around 5% from the recent peak of March 29.

Is this an opportunity to buy a small dip or a sign that AAPL may have lost momentum? Today, the Apple Maven tries to answer this question.

Figure 1: Apple Stock Pulls Back Again: Is It A Buy Now?

AAPL: the 2022 zigzag

The equities market has been soft so far this year, as the tech-rich Nasdaq remains in correction territory. Apple stock, on the other hand, has declined a much tamer 5% YTD.

But make no mistake: Apple’s path to outperformance in 2022 has not been without ups and downs. The chart below shows that the stock dipped as much as 15% by mid-March (blue line), trailing the returns of the S&P 500 at times. However, AAPL has consistently recovered more strongly.

Figure 2: AAPL dipped as much as 15% by mid-March (blue line), trailing the returns of the S&P 500 at times.

After flirting with the $3 trillion market cap once again, Apple share price declined from nearly $180 to an intraday low of $170 in a matter of few days.

Buy the dip?

Historically, Apple stock has been a better buy after pullbacks. Therefore, the recent decline in share price could be seen as an opportunity for new investors to own shares at early December 2021 prices.

But there are a couple of caveats to the buy-on-weakness approach. First, the strategy does not always work in the short term. In fact, Apple stock often trends over a period of days or weeks, suggesting that the recent decline could extend further.

Second, the most recent 5% pullback puts AAPL stock at a drawdown of only 6% from the all-time high of only about three months ago. The chart below shows that corrections of at least 15% are the ones that tend to produce the best one-year gains for dip-buyers.

Figure 3: Average one-year return on AAPL, by strategy.

Think longer term

Therefore, I do not think that short-term traders or buy-the-dip fans should get too excited about the recent softness in AAPL price. This is more likely to be market noise than a rare opportunity to own Apple on the cheap.

Instead, I believe that those who are considering buying Apple stock at current levels should be willing to think longer term. Fundamentally, is AAPL a good name to buy and tuck away inside a diversified stock portfolio over the next several years?

From that perspective, I find it hard not to like Apple stock, even at current prices that are not too far from the historical peak.

I could present my own business-specific arguments for owning AAPL, but I will quote Wall Street experts instead. According toTipRanks, not a single analyst believes that Apple stock is a sell. About four out of five think that AAPL is a buy, while one in five maintains a hold rating.

The most bullish of analysts sees AAPL climbing to $215 for upside potential of around 25% in the foreseeable future. Wamsi Mohan, from Bank of America, has cited decreased trade-in prices to support his thesis of strong demand for the iPhone in 2022.

Mr. Mohan also does not seem too concerned about supply chain issues. Despite plant shutdowns in Asia, the analyst points out that Apple has sourcing flexibility.

Strength in the iPhone business is only part of the bullish thesis — albeit a very important one. Morgan Stanley’s Katy Huberty, for example, saysthat hardware subscriptions across Apple’s different devices can be highly supportive of user spending, and potentially a source of upside to consensus expectations.

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Apple Stock Pulls Back. However, AAPL has consistently recovered more strongly.Figure 2: AAPL dipped as much as 15% by mid-March (blue line), trailing the returns of the S&P 500 at times. After flirting with the $3 trillion market cap once again, Apple share price declined from nearly $180 to an intraday low of $170 in a matter of few days.Buy the dip?Historically, Apple stock has been a better buy after pullbacks. Therefore, the recent decline in share price could be seen as an opportunity for new investors to own shares at early December 2021 prices. But there are a couple of caveats to the buy-on-weakness approach. First, the strategy does not always work in the short term. In fact, Apple stock often trends over a period of days or weeks, suggesting that the recent decline could extend further.Second, the most recent 5% pullback puts AAPL stock at a drawdown of only 6% from the all-time high of only about three months ago. The chart below shows that corrections of at least 15% are the ones that tend to produce the best one-year gains for dip-buyers.Figure 3: Average one-year return on AAPL, by strategy.Think longer termTherefore, I do not think that short-term traders or buy-the-dip fans should get too excited about the recent softness in AAPL price. This is more likely to be market noise than a rare opportunity to own Apple on the cheap.Instead, I believe that those who are considering buying Apple stock at current levels should be willing to think longer term. Fundamentally, is AAPL a good name to buy and tuck away inside a diversified stock portfolio over the next several years? From that perspective, I find it hard not to like Apple stock, even at current prices that are not too far from the historical peak.I could present my own business-specific arguments for owning AAPL, but I will quote Wall Street experts instead. According toTipRanks, not a single analyst believes that Apple stock is a sell. About four out of five think that AAPL is a buy, while one in five maintains a hold rating. The most bullish of analysts sees AAPL climbing to $215 for upside potential of around 25% in the foreseeable future. Wamsi Mohan, from Bank of America, has cited decreased trade-in prices to support his thesis of strong demand for the iPhone in 2022.Mr. Mohan also does not seem too concerned about supply chain issues. Despite plant shutdowns in Asia, the analyst points out that Apple has sourcing flexibility.Strength in the iPhone business is only part of the bullish thesis — albeit a very important one. Morgan Stanley’s Katy Huberty, for example, saysthat hardware subscriptions across Apple’s different devices can be highly supportive of user spending, and potentially a source of upside to consensus expectations.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":96,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9019702270,"gmtCreate":1648635755426,"gmtModify":1676534368696,"author":{"id":"3573471374708502","authorId":"3573471374708502","name":"RetiredPig83","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5595baccc3331b6777d7c9f0c077ecc1","crmLevel":3,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3573471374708502","authorIdStr":"3573471374708502"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Sea Ltd(SE)$Still with tonnes of potential. only going to fare better with years to come. Finally, IBM is heavily involved in the cloud.

More specifically,as I pointed out in a December 2021 column, IBM CEO Arvind Krishna has adopted a hybrid cloud strategy, which involves marketing the conglomerate’s “software tools that connect multiple public clouds to companies’ on-premise data centers and edge environments.” With many businesses very concerned about cloud outages, that should be a winning strategy this year.

Additionally, IBM’s spinoff of its less profitable businesses, completed in November, should greatly boost the valuation of IBM stock.

Finally, Krishna is widely viewed as doing a good job so far, and the company does not face significant regulatory headwinds.

Microsoft (MSFT)

The second-largest cloud infrastructure provider, Microsoft is very well-positioned to benefit from the technology’s growth his year. Specifically, well-respected research firm Gartner predicts that cloud spending will grow to $482 billion this year, versus $313 billion in 2020.

Indeed, with the work-from-home trend staying stronger than many had expected, the cloud is going to stay critical for the foreseeable future.

Microsoft has a reasonable valuation (after its recent pullback, MSFT stock is changing hands for less than 32 times analysts’ average 2022 earnings per share (EPS) estimate). Meanwhile, like IBM, it definitely is quite profitable, and it’s unlikely to face any difficult regulatory challenges in 2022.

Also like IBM, the company is poised to continue getting a lift from the work-from-home trend. Not only will Microsoft’s cloud unit be boosted by that trend, but its Windows business should continue to be lifted as more work-from-home employees upgrade their home computer hardware and software.

Tech Stocks to Beat the Nasdaq: Palo Alto Networks (PANW)

One of the world’s premiere cybersecurity companies, Palo Alto is often on “the short lists” of major IT security deals. What’s more, as artificial intelligence is becoming much more important in the sector, Palo Alto is quickly increasing its utilization of the technology.

Analysts expect the IT security giant to generate EPS of $7.23 this year, up from $6.14 in 2021. PANW stock is changing hands for 67 times the mean 2022 EPS estimate. That sounds high, but it’s actually fairly low for the hot cybersecurity sector.

Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL)

With its highly profitable search ad business that’s seemingly impervious to recession, the pandemic, the recovery from the pandemic, Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) new privacy rules and inflation, Alphabet has become a FAANG favorite on the Street.

In Q3 2021, the company’s profit rose by a huge 66% year-over-year to an incredible $19 billion, while its ad revenue climbed 43% YoY.

Alphabet has been cutting its costs, and 2022 could be the year when its Waymo self-driving unit starts really putting its tremendous commercial potential on display. The main factor behind this has been a spate of analyst upgrades for shares in the China-based electric vehicle (EV) maker.

Confidence is rising again that the company’s production ramp-up will result in a big jump in sales for the rest of 2022, and going into 2023. Yet before you decide to jump in, and chase its recent rally, it’s hardly a lock that results in the coming quarter will live up to today’s elevated hopes.

The ramp-up may still fail to produce results in line with expectations. This may cause the stock to give back recent gains. In the long term, Nio’s global expansion could also fall short of expectations. With high growth heavily priced in, it may not take much for today’s renewed bullishness to reverse.

Why NIO Stock Has Surged Post-Earnings

Nio may have beat on revenue for the second quarter, but the results were hardly much to get excited about. As expected, China’s pandemic shutdowns continued to decelerate growth, on a year-over-year basis, and especially on a sequential basis.

Even worse, the EV maker reported a higher-than-expected net loss. Compared to the prior year’s quarter, net losses per share were up 316.4%. Still, instead of reacting negatively to Q2 results, the market focused instead on the company’s outlook for Q3, which calls for a speeding back up of growth.

This resulted in a slight uptick for NIO stock right after earnings but analyst upgrades sent shares soaring. As InvestorPlace’s Eddie Pan reported Sep 12, two analysts (Deutsche Bank’s Edison Yu, and BofA’s Ming-Hsun Lee) have reiterated their “buy” ratings, and have upped their price targets.

Both analysts are bullish deliveries will re-accelerate considerably during Q4. This is due to a combination of the production ramp-up, plus Nio’s launch of new vehicle models. Yet while the situation may be improving, it may not be to the extent implied by the stock’s latest spike.

How Its Latest Uptick Could Reverse

As buzz returns to NIO stock, it may seem that now’s the time to buy, ahead of a continued comeback. Unfortunately, there’s a lot to suggest that its latest surge may be short-lived in nature. The main factor behind this has been a spate of analyst upgrades for shares in the China-based electric vehicle (EV) maker.Confidence is rising again that the company’s production ramp-up will result in a big jump in sales for the rest of 2022, and going into 2023. Why NIO Stock Has Surged Post-EarningsNio may have beat on revenue for the second quarter, but the results were hardly much to get excited about. As expected, China’s pandemic shutdowns continued to decelerate growth, on a year-over-year basis, and especially on a sequential basis.Even worse, the EV maker reported a higher-than-expected net loss. How Its Latest Uptick Could ReverseAs buzz returns to NIO stock, it may seem that now’s the time to buy, ahead of a continued comeback. Unfortunately, there’s a lot to suggest that its latest surge may be short-lived in nature. With its move back above $20 per share, the market has now priced in a possible growth re-acceleration as a near-certainty.For the stock to keep moving higher, or at the very least avoid moving lower, Nio needs to both hit its own Q3 deliveries projection, plus hit Q4 numbers in line with the sell side’s expectations. The major U.S. indexes were a year removed from their pandemic bottom and had delivered one of the strongest bounces from a bear-market in history. What's more, there was abundant access to cheap capital and the Federal Reserve was intent on maintaining its dovish monetary stance.

But over the past 12 months, the wheels fell off the wagon in dramatic fashion -- and the nation's central bank may be to blame.

While no one ever said overseeing monetary policy for the largest economy in the world would be easy, in hindsight the Fed left its foot on the accelerator for far too long. A combination of historically low lending rates and ongoing quantitative easing measures designed to drive down long-term bond yields has played a big role in sending the U.S. inflation rate to a four-decade high. In fact, a good argument can be made that the growth-focused Nasdaq Composite's brief tumble into bear market territory was primarily Fed-induced.

Although big drops in the market can be scary at times -- especially when they're caused by the Fed shifting course -- they're historically the best time to put your money to work. That's because all notable declines are eventually erased by a bull market rally.

Below are three of the smartest stocks investors can buy in a Fed-driven bear market.

Berkshire Hathaway

The first stock investors would be wise to buy in a Fed-induced bear market is conglomerate Berkshire Hathaway ( BRK.A )( BRK.B).

Berkshire may not be a household name, but its CEO, billionaire Warren Buffett, probably is. Since taking over as CEO of the company in 1965, Buffett has overseen more than $760 billion in valuation creation for shareholders (himself included), and he's led Berkshire's Class A shares (BRK.A) to an average annual gain of just over 20%. In aggregate, we're talking about an increase of 4,210,069%, as of April 7.

One of Buffett's not-so-subtle secrets to success is that he's packed Berkshire Hathaway's portfolio with cyclical companies. These are businesses that thrive when the economy is firing on all cylinders and struggle a bit when recessions strike. Instead of trying to time these inevitable downturns, Buffett has positioned Berkshire Hathaway and its investment portfolio to take advantage of long-winded expansions. After all, economic expansions last considerably longer than recessions.

Something else to consider is that a sizable percentage of Berkshire Hathaway's owned and invested assets are in the financial sector. The Fed has made clear that it intends to reduce its balance sheet (i.e., sell Treasury bonds) and raise interest rates. Higher lending rates will be a boon for bank stocks that have variable-rate outstanding loans, and it'll also allow insurance companies to generate more interest income on their float (i.e., their unused premium). In short, Berkshire Hathaway is well-positioned to navigate a rising-rate environment.

Berkshire Hathaway's success is also a function of Buffett's love for dividend stocks. Companies that pay a dividend are often profitable, time-tested, and have transparent long-term outlooks. This year, Berkshire should collect in excess of $5 billion in dividend income, with north of $4 billion coming from just a half-dozen holdings.

Long story short, riding Buffett's coattails has long been a moneymaking investment strategy.

CrowdStrike Holdings

Just because the stock market is falling and the Fed is scrambling to control historically high inflation, it doesn't mean growth stocks are off-limits for patient investors. A perfect example of a fast-paced company that's a smart buy is cybersecurity stock CrowdStrike Holdings (CRWD).

Since the pandemic began more than two years ago, businesses have accelerated the pace at which they've moved data online and into the cloud. Given that hackers and robots don't take time off just because Wall Street had a bad day, the onus of protecting this data is increasingly falling onto third-party providers like CrowdStrike. Put another way, cybersecurity has evolved from an optional to essential service over the past two-plus decades.

While the cybersecurity industry should be home to a number of winners, CrowdStrike really stands out for its cloud-native Falcon security platform. Falcon oversees approximately 1 trillion events per day and relies on artificial intelligence to grow more efficient at recognizing and responding to potential end-user threats. CrowdStrike isn't the cheapest solution in cybersecurity, but its gross retention rate of 98% suggests it's one of the best.

Additional proof of Falcon's success can be seen in CrowdStrike's subscriber figures and organic growth rate. In fact, a good argument can be made that the growth-focused Nasdaq Composite's brief tumble into bear market territory was primarily Fed-induced.Although big drops in the market can be scary at times -- especially when they're caused by the Fed shifting course -- they're historically the best time to put your money to work. That's because all notable declines are eventually erased by a bull market rally.Below are three of the smartest stocks investors can buy in a Fed-driven bear market.Berkshire HathawayThe first stock investors would be wise to buy in a Fed-induced bear market is conglomerate Berkshire Hathaway ( BRK.A )( BRK.B).Berkshire may not be a household name, but its CEO, billionaire Warren Buffett, probably is. Since taking over as CEO of the company in 1965, Buffett has overseen more than $760 billion in valuation creation for shareholders (himself included), and he's led Berkshire's Class A shares (BRK.A) to an average annual gain of just over 20%. In aggregate, we're talking about an increase of 4,210,069%, as of April 7.One of Buffett's not-so-subtle secrets to success is that he's packed Berkshire Hathaway's portfolio with cyclical companies. These are businesses that thrive when the economy is firing on all cylinders and struggle a bit when recessions strike. Instead of trying to time these inevitable downturns, Buffett has positioned Berkshire Hathaway and its investment portfolio to take advantage of long-winded expansions. After all, economic expansions last considerably longer than recessions.Something else to consider is that a sizable percentage of Berkshire Hathaway's owned and invested assets are in the financial sector. In short, Berkshire Hathaway is well-positioned to navigate a rising-rate environment.Berkshire Hathaway's success is also a function of Buffett's love for dividend stocks. Companies that pay a dividend are often profitable, time-tested, and have transparent long-term outlooks. This year, Berkshire should collect in excess of $5 billion in dividend income, with north of $4 billion coming from just a half-dozen holdings.Long story short, riding Buffett's coattails has long been a moneymaking investment strategy.Image source: Getty Images.CrowdStrike HoldingsJust because the stock market is falling and the Fed is scrambling to control historically high inflation, it doesn't mean growth stocks are off-limits for patient investors. A perfect example of a fast-paced company that's a smart buy is cybersecurity stock CrowdStrike Holdings (CRWD).Since the pandemic began more than two years ago, businesses have accelerated the pace at which they've moved data online and into the cloud. CrowdStrike isn't the cheapest solution in cybersecurity, but its gross retention rate of 98% suggests it's one of the best.Additional proof of Falcon's success can be seen in CrowdStrike's subscriber figures and organic growth rate. Over the past five years, the company's subscriber count has grown by an annual average of 105%. What's more, CrowdStrike has reported 16 consecutive quarters with a dollar-based retention rate of at least 120%. This is a fancy way of saying that existing clients spent at least 20% more on a year-over-year basis for four consecutive years (16 quarters). As the premier name in cybersecurity, any significant pullback in a Fed-driven bear market should be viewed as a buying opportunity.Image source: Getty Images.Walgreens Boots AllianceA third exceptionally smart stock to buy during a Fed-induced bear market is pharmacy chain Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA).Generally, healthcare stocks are nearly impervious to wild vacillations in the stock market and, to some extent, the U.S. economy.
