Reverberations continued to be felt in terms of positioning, trading in derivatives and probably also in wrongly prepared portfolios.</p><p>As usual in 2022, the biggest venue of impact was the US stock options market, where trading volumes are smashing records as investors of all stripes rush into short-dated contracts to catch up. It’s creating snags for what had been billed as the great inflation trade, with the mighty dollar losing luster and technology shares reclaiming their long-lost leadership, at least briefly.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a4f48b0cd9e065b443fdcd036d7d2aea\" tg-width=\"698\" tg-height=\"392\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/>The recalibration was prompted when a soft print on consumer prices triggered a reset of the perceived path for Federal Reserve monetary policy. Exacerbating it are money managers who had cut equity exposure to the bone during the bear market and found themselves caught out. With almost everyone sitting on the same side of the trade and exiting at once, an already-turbulent market got weirder.</p><p>“Crypto is just part of a broader mosaic of an almost dysfunctional market,” Doug Fincher, hedge fund manager of Ionic Capital Management, said by phone. “Not to be cynical, but look at CPI last Thursday. It was two basis points better than expected, and the market exploded. There’s a massive amount of technical factor rotation. There’s just a lot of crosscurrents in a really volatile, strange market.”</p><p>The trend abated some during the week, with the S&amp;P 500 closing lower over the period. Short-term Treasury yields regained some ground and the dollar edged higher as Fed officials reiterated their intention to keep raising rates.</p><p>Still, whether inflation has peaked is up for debate. There won’t be another reading for more than three weeks, and investors and policy makers alike have misjudged price trends since the pandemic hit. With data mostly coming in ahead of expectations this year, everyone from currency traders to bond investors were bracing for another big inflation number last week.</p><p>When it didn’t pan out, a cascade of unwinding ensued. The dollar, darling asset of the inflation trade, is losing momentum. Down more than 4% in November, the US currency is poised for its worst month in two years. Two-year Treasuries, where large speculators built up record short positions before the CPI report, saw a rally that pushed yields down 25 basis points when it was released, the most in more than a decade.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/adb44ae869a907655851e60d27113dae\" tg-width=\"698\" tg-height=\"392\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/>Tech stocks, among the biggest casualties during the Fed’s aggressive inflation-fighting campaign, got a respite. Up more than 9% since the day before the CPI data, the industry has beaten all other major groups in the S&amp;P 500, in a partial reversal of dismal returns earlier this year.</p><p>“These things are certainly bound to happen at around key critical junctures in economic and monetary policy, which is where we’re at -- the Fed shifting from raising rates toward more of a deceleration in terms of hikes,” said Layla Royer, a senior equity derivatives salesperson at Citadel Securities. “It is a significant shift.”</p><p>A basket of the most-shorted stocks soared 18% over the four days through Tuesday, dealing a fresh blow to hedge funds who boosted bearish wagers during a 10-month rout and turning them into forced buyers. Their total short covering over the stretch hit levels not seen since the retail-driven squeeze in January 2021, data compiled by JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co.’s prime broker show.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/295264055c5003bcb86eb4f7fe4f15e8\" tg-width=\"800\" tg-height=\"301\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/>For a third time this year, the S&amp;P 500 mounted a recovery of more than 10%. Such counter-trend rallies have spurred demand for bullish call options from those who have been defensively positioned in the market. As a result, the index’s skew -- the relative cost of puts versus calls -- this month fell to the lowest level in more than a decade.</p><p>“Market screams back up. You’re at risk of losing your job because you’re going to underperform everybody,” said Dennis Davitt, founder of Millbank Dartmoor Portsmouth LLC, an investment firm that specializes in volatility strategies. “So the remedy for that is just by turning some of your equities into cash and then buying upside calls as a stock replacement.”</p><p>The Fed-induced market gyrations are encouraging investors to go all-in on options to place bullish and bearish bets alike. About 46 million contracts have changed hands each day in November, on course for the busiest month on record, data compiled by Bloomberg show.</p><p>Helping drive the boom is the frenzy trading in derivatives maturing within 24 hours. Such contracts made up a whopping 44% of S&amp;P 500 options volume in the past month, according to an estimate by Goldman Sachs Group Inc.</p><p>For now, the fireworks following the CPI shock appeared to be dying down. The S&amp;P 500 has moved less than 1% for six straight sessions on a closing basis, the longest stretch of calm since January.</p><p>To Mike Bailey, director of research at FBB Capital Partners, the tranquility may not last. For one, the cross-asset rally has contributed to easing financial conditions that’s working against Fed Chair Jerome Powell’s goal to slow the economy.</p><p>“We may get some buyer’s remorse over the next few weeks as investors fret over a potentially hot jobs number and any whiff of hawkishness from Powell and the Fed,” said Bailey. “Investors are coming up for air after a nice run since mid-October. Reverberations continued to be felt in terms of positioning, trading in derivatives and probably also in wrongly prepared portfolios.As usual in 2022, the biggest venue of impact was the US stock options market, where trading volumes are smashing records as investors of all stripes rush into short-dated contracts to catch up. It’s creating snags for what had been billed as the great inflation trade, with the mighty dollar losing luster and technology shares reclaiming their long-lost leadership, at least briefly.The recalibration was prompted when a soft print on consumer prices triggered a reset of the perceived path for Federal Reserve monetary policy. Exacerbating it are money managers who had cut equity exposure to the bone during the bear market and found themselves caught out. With almost everyone sitting on the same side of the trade and exiting at once, an already-turbulent market got weirder.“Crypto is just part of a broader mosaic of an almost dysfunctional market,” Doug Fincher, hedge fund manager of Ionic Capital Management, said by phone. “Not to be cynical, but look at CPI last Thursday. It was two basis points better than expected, and the market exploded. There’s a massive amount of technical factor rotation. There’s just a lot of crosscurrents in a really volatile, strange market.”The trend abated some during the week, with the S&P 500 closing lower over the period. Short-term Treasury yields regained some ground and the dollar edged higher as Fed officials reiterated their intention to keep raising rates.Still, whether inflation has peaked is up for debate. There won’t be another reading for more than three weeks, and investors and policy makers alike have misjudged price trends since the pandemic hit. Their total short covering over the stretch hit levels not seen since the retail-driven squeeze in January 2021, data compiled by JPMorgan Chase & Co.’s prime broker show.For a third time this year, the S&P 500 mounted a recovery of more than 10%. Such counter-trend rallies have spurred demand for bullish call options from those who have been defensively positioned in the market. Companies that pay a regular dividend are almost always profitable and have stood the test of time.</p><p>Over the next 12 months, Buffett&#39;s company is on track to collect more than $6 billion in dividend income. The shocker is that $2.8 billion of this annual dividend income is slated to come from just three stocks.</p><h2>Chevron: $964,107,966 in annual dividend income</h2><p>The leading dividend stock for Berkshire Hathaway is none other than global energy giant <b>Chevron</b>. Chevron is a dividend stock that has increased its base annual payout for 35 consecutive years, and is currently doling out $5.68 a share, which is good enough for a market-topping yield of almost 3.4%. Including the Chevron shares owned by Buffett&#39;s secret portfolio, New England Asset Management, this position is generating more than $964 million in annual dividend income for Berkshire Hathaway.</p><p>Let&#39;s be clear: Buffett and his investment team wouldn&#39;t have plowed into energy stocks in 2022 if they didn&#39;t strongly believe that energy commodity prices would remain above their historic averages for the coming years. Certain global dynamics do support this thesis, although a U.S. recession would likely weigh on near-term oil and gas demand.</p><p>The biggest positive for crude oil and natural gas prices has been the underinvestment in drilling, exploration, and infrastructure by most energy majors during the COVID-19 pandemic. Paring back capital expenditures means it&#39;ll be difficult to quickly increase energy commodity supply anytime soon. When coupled with Russia&#39;s invasion of Ukraine, which has cast doubt on Europe&#39;s energy supply needs, there&#39;s a real likelihood that crude oil and natural gas prices will stick above their historic norms.</p><p>Buffett&#39;s fascination with Chevron probably also involves its integrated operating model. &#34;Integrated&#34; oil and gas companies operate midstream assets, such as pipelines, and downstream assets, like chemical plants and refineries. These midstream and downstream assets help provide predictable cash flow and can be used to hedge against energy commodity price weakness.</p><p>Big oil is also known for its hefty capital-return programs. In addition to its juicy dividend, Chevron has pledged to repurchase up to $15 billion worth of its common stock this year.</p><h2>Occidental Petroleum: $901,062,858 in annual dividend income</h2><p>Have I mentioned that energy stocks are playing a big role in anchoring Berkshire Hathaway&#39;s portfolio in 2022 and bolstering its dividend income?</p><p>Since the year began, the Oracle of Omaha and his team have purchased more than 194 million shares of <b>Occidental Petroleum</b>. This common stock is providing more than $101 million in annual income. However, Berkshire Hathaway also owns $10 billion worth of Occidental Petroleum preferred stock that doles out an 8% yield ($800 million a year). Altogether, Buffett is collecting north of $901 million in annual dividend income from Occidental.</p><p>As you can probably imagine, the catalysts fueling Occidental Petroleum are really similar to Chevron. Years of underinvestment in drilling and infrastructure (for the energy sector when examined as a whole) combined with Russia&#39;s actions in Ukraine create a scenario where higher energy prices can significantly boost operating cash flow. But there are some differences between the two companies.</p><p>For example, even though Occidental is an integrated operator like Chevron, more of its annual revenue is tied to its higher-margin drilling operations. If crude oil and natural gas remain elevated, Occidental can reap the rewards even more so than Chevron.</p><p>But there&#39;s a flip side to this benefit. Whereas Chevron has what can arguably be described as the best balance sheet among large oil and gas companies, Occidental was sitting on more than $35 billion in net debt less than two years ago. The good news is the company has whittled away $15 billion in net debt and reignited its share repurchase program as oil prices soared. Whether a tidier balance sheet allows for earnings multiple expansion remains to be seen.</p><h2>Bank of America: $908,909,765 in annual dividend income</h2><p>The third high-octane income stock in Berkshire Hathaway&#39;s portfolio is <b>Bank of America</b>. Including shares owned by New England Asset Management, the more than 1.03 billion shares of BofA held by Berkshire will help Buffett and his team rake in close to $909 million in annual dividend income.</p><p>Usually, bank stocks perform poorly during bear markets and struggle when U.S. economic growth slows or shifts into reverse. But this time could really be different. Whereas the Federal Reserve often comes to Wall Street&#39;s rescue by lowering interest rates to spur lending, the nation&#39;s central bank is, instead, raising interest rates at the fastest pace in decades to combat historically high inflation. Even if a recession were to occur in the U.S., the benefit of rapidly rising rates on Bank of America&#39;s outstanding variable-rate loans should more than offset loan losses.</p><p>Among money-center banks, Bank of America <i>is</i> the most interest-sensitive. Not only did its net interest income jump 24% to $13.9 billion during the third quarter, but BofA has estimated that a 100-basis-point parallel shift in the interest rate yield curve will produce $4.2 billion in added net interest income over the next 12 months.</p><p>Despite its size, Bank of America is making headway with its digital transformation as well. More than 70% of its 56 million verified digital users are active customers. As a result, 48% of total sales were completed online or via mobile app, and 51 million more transactions were completed via digital peer-to-peer app Zelle (167 million) than traditional check (116 million) in the September-ended quarter. Digital transactions cost banks just a fraction of what in-person interactions run.</p><p>And to keep with the theme of this list, bank stocks like BofA have a storied history of sizable capital-return programs. This common stock is providing more than $101 million in annual income. However, Berkshire Hathaway also owns $10 billion worth of Occidental Petroleum preferred stock that doles out an 8% yield ($800 million a year). Altogether, Buffett is collecting north of $901 million in annual dividend income from Occidental.As you can probably imagine, the catalysts fueling Occidental Petroleum are really similar to Chevron. Years of underinvestment in drilling and infrastructure (for the energy sector when examined as a whole) combined with Russia's actions in Ukraine create a scenario where higher energy prices can significantly boost operating cash flow. But there are some differences between the two companies.For example, even though Occidental is an integrated operator like Chevron, more of its annual revenue is tied to its higher-margin drilling operations. If crude oil and natural gas remain elevated, Occidental can reap the rewards even more so than Chevron.But there's a flip side to this benefit. Whereas Chevron has what can arguably be described as the best balance sheet among large oil and gas companies, Occidental was sitting on more than $35 billion in net debt less than two years ago. In my view, the setup is looking great for Alibaba in 2023 as I think that this is likely the best risk/reward opportunity available.</p><p>First, the company looks set to be a key beneficiary of the opening up of China&#39;s economy as the country looks to remove covid restrictions. This, along with the low base of the China eCommerce business in 2022, will lead to strong growth in the core China eCommerce segment in 2023.</p><p>Second, the cost optimization efforts are going well, and the effects are visible from the bottom-line beats that the company has achieved in recent quarters. Most of its newer and faster-growing initiatives are seeing narrower losses and I think this will continue in 2023 as the cost-saving initiatives will likely bear fruit in the quarters to come.</p><p>Third, cloud will also see improving business fundamentals, as non-Internet sectors maintain their momentum and the Internet sector demand recovers in 2023.</p><h2>China eCommerce to post strong recovery in 2023 on low base</h2><p>The segment has been rather lackluster in recent quarters. This September 2022 quarter was no exception as China&#39;s covid policies continue to bite.</p><p>Alibaba&#39;s 11.11 comments were not as positive as in prior years and this was a result of several negative influences in the 2022 version of 11.11. The bottom line is that China&#39;s strict restrictions may have negatively affected consumption levels in China during this year&#39;s 11.11. As a result, the GMV for this year&#39;s 11.11 was flat compared to the prior year. This flatter growth does imply that the near-term December 2022 quarter may be challenging for Alibaba and thus, the segment will likely pose more of a downside risk. The downside risk, if I were to quantify it, is roughly around 5% in GMV terms as this is the approximate gap between the 2022 11.11 performance and the typical December quarter GMV growth.</p><p>For the next year in 2023, I think that Alibaba is actually a key beneficiary of the re-opening of the Chinese covid restrictions. This could be done by March 2022, and I expect that we will see Alibaba&#39;s China eCommerce business to grow by more than 10% in 2023. This is contributed by the high exposure that Alibaba has to discretionary spending, as well as the low base from 2022.</p><h2>Big profit driver from cost optimization in 2023</h2><p>One of the biggest positives for Alibaba in 2022 was the success from its cost optimization efforts. The market can see visible signs that the cost optimization efforts are taking effect and it is rewarding Alibaba for the good execution from the cost optimization efforts.</p><p>As a result of cost optimization measures, the company has seen bottom-line beats in recent quarters, which is testament to the management&#39;s efforts to drive costs down as the business slows.</p><p>I continue to expect that the cost savings will continue to flow through in the coming quarters as we have seen the peak adjusted EBITA loss for the new initiatives that Alibaba is undertaking in the December quarter from last year. For the September 2022 quarter, I think that we continue to see improvement in cost savings in the new initiatives segments as the combined losses amounted to about Rmb6 billion in the recent quarter, compared to Rmb19 billion in the same quarter in the prior year.</p><p>For Alibaba&#39;s China commerce segment, its segment margin improved by 1 percentage point compared to the prior quarter to 32% in the September 2022 quarter. This was a result of reduced losses for Taobao Deals and Taocaicai. In addition, international commerce also saw reduced losses as a result of losses being reduced at Lazada and Trendyol as the EBITA loss narrowed from Rmb2,481 million in the prior year to Rmb960 million in the September quarter of 2022. Local services also narrowed losses further in the September 2022 quarter to Rmb3,044 million, down from Rmb4,770 million in the prior year. This was driven by improving unit economics in Ele.me as delivery cost per order was reduced and average order value increased.</p><p>I continue to expect that losses will narrow through the December quarter of 2022 and into 2023 as management continues to be effective in driving margin improvement and cost savings across the business. I expect that the cost savings will continue into 2023 and this will drive an adjusted EPS growth of +41% in the next year as the business revenues and profits start to recover.</p><h2>Recovery in growth for the cloud segment in 2023</h2><p>For Alibaba&#39;s cloud segment, the outlook for 2023 looks more encouraging than what has happened for 2022. First, Alibaba recently disclosed for the first time ever, its revenue mix between Internet and non-Internet industries. In the September 2022 quarter results, the non-Internet segment grew by 28% year on year and now represents 58% of the total cloud segment. The strong growth in the non-Internet segment is a key driver for continued growth for the overall cloud segment as diversification in sectors within the cloud segment has paid off. This strong growth was contributed by the financial services, telecommunication and public services industries respectively.</p><p>That said, the Internet client portion of the cloud segment is still struggling as the revenues for the Internet sector were down 18% year on year. This, again, is due to a loss of one of Alibaba&#39;s key Internet customers, as well as its online education customers, and due to the relatively weaker demand from the Internet sector in general.</p><p>For 2023, where will we see Alibaba&#39;s cloud segment head towards? I think the answer is increasingly tilted towards a stronger growth profile for the cloud segment. In the near term, we may see that there are still existing headwinds from the company&#39;s Internet sector exposure, but I think that this will improve through 2023. First, I expect that the non-Internet industries will continue to progress and grow robustly as the country comes out from covid lockdowns and removes strict restrictions. Second, I think that we will see that the demand from the Internet sector will also recover as sentiment in the sector improves over the course of the year. Taken together, my expectation is for the overall cloud revenue growth to reach the teens level by next year, as the second half will prove to be a strong quarter for the cloud segment with the continued increasing demand.</p><h2>Creating value for BABA shareholders in 2023</h2><p>Alibaba has been an active repurchaser of its shares as it initially has a share repurchase program that was authorized in 2019 for $6 billion to be used over 2 years.</p><p>This program has been extended and increased a few times, and the recent announcement in November 2022 was that Alibaba will be increasing its share repurchase program by another $15 billion, to $40 billion. Furthermore, the program was also extended all the way to the end of March 2025.</p><p>Alibaba noted that as of 16 November 2022, it has repurchased $18 billion in shares, which means that it has $22 billion remaining for the enlarged share repurchase program that it currently has. For reference, Alibaba&#39;s buyback in the September 2022 quarter represented 39% of its free cash flows. I think that there will be a large percentage of capital that will be committed to share repurchases in the next year as Alibaba continues to execute on its share repurchase program until the end of 2025. At the end of the day, shareholders should benefit from these repurchases as Alibaba executes on the repurchase program.</p><h2>Valuation</h2><p>I use a sum of the parts valuation model to derive my target price for Alibaba. This involves determining a value for each part of Alibaba&#39;s business.</p><ol><li>First, for the China eCommerce segment, I think that we will likely see a strong growth return to the segment on the back of a low base and relaxing of covid restrictions in China. This upside has been taken into account for my forecast for 2023. At the same time, there is a risk that the company may face a slowdown as a result of the weakening macroeconomic environment in China. As such, I incorporate conservatism into my financial forecasts to take this into account as well.</li><li>Second, for Local Services, Cainiao and other investments and associates held by the company, I value these by their latest transaction values and market capitalizations of the respective companies.</li><li>Lastly, for Youku, International Commerce and Cloud, I use a DCF methodology to derive the value of these segments. I take into account the long-term growth opportunities for the International Commerce segment and the robust growth opportunities for the Cloud segment.</li></ol><p>Taking all these together, I also applied a 30% holding discount. In the cloud space, there are large players that continue to vie for market share in China. Lastly, in the international e-commerce segment, Amazon (AMZN) and Sea Limited&#39;s (SE) Shopee are the main contenders for Alibaba&#39;s e-commerce segment in the international region.</p><h3>Cloud risks</h3><p>Alibaba looks to be gaining business in non-Internet sectors while the demand for Internet sectors remains weak. There is a risk that other players in China may attempt to take share from Alibaba. This includes established cloud players like Huawei, Tencent (OTCPK:TCEHY), and China Telecom. This could slow growth for Alibaba&#39;s cloud segment in the near term as the competitive landscape sours.</p><h2>Conclusion</h2><p>2023 will be a great year for Alibaba, in my view. As mentioned earlier in the article, the fundamentals are improving for a business that has seen very negative sentiment for some time now. In the September 2022 quarter results, the non-Internet segment grew by 28% year on year and now represents 58% of the total cloud segment. The strong growth in the non-Internet segment is a key driver for continued growth for the overall cloud segment as diversification in sectors within the cloud segment has paid off. This strong growth was contributed by the financial services, telecommunication and public services industries respectively.That said, the Internet client portion of the cloud segment is still struggling as the revenues for the Internet sector were down 18% year on year. This, again, is due to a loss of one of Alibaba's key Internet customers, as well as its online education customers, and due to the relatively weaker demand from the Internet sector in general.For 2023, where will we see Alibaba's cloud segment head towards? I think the answer is increasingly tilted towards a stronger growth profile for the cloud segment. In the near term, we may see that there are still existing headwinds from the company's Internet sector exposure, but I think that this will improve through 2023. First, I expect that the non-Internet industries will continue to progress and grow robustly as the country comes out from covid lockdowns and removes strict restrictions. Second, I think that we will see that the demand from the Internet sector will also recover as sentiment in the sector improves over the course of the year. Taken together, my expectation is for the overall cloud revenue growth to reach the teens level by next year, as the second half will prove to be a strong quarter for the cloud segment with the continued increasing demand.Creating value for BABA shareholders in 2023Alibaba has been an active repurchaser of its shares as it initially has a share repurchase program that was authorized in 2019 for $6 billion to be used over 2 years.This program has been extended and increased a few times, and the recent announcement in November 2022 was that Alibaba will be increasing its share repurchase program by another $15 billion, to $40 billion. Furthermore, the program was also extended all the way to the end of March 2025.Alibaba noted that as of 16 November 2022, it has repurchased $18 billion in shares, which means that it has $22 billion remaining for the enlarged share repurchase program that it currently has. For reference, Alibaba's buyback in the September 2022 quarter represented 39% of its free cash flows. I think that there will be a large percentage of capital that will be committed to share repurchases in the next year as Alibaba continues to execute on its share repurchase program until the end of 2025. At the end of the day, shareholders should benefit from these repurchases as Alibaba executes on the repurchase program.ValuationI use a sum of the parts valuation model to derive my target price for Alibaba. This involves determining a value for each part of Alibaba's business.First, for the China eCommerce segment, I think that we will likely see a strong growth return to the segment on the back of a low base and relaxing of covid restrictions in China. This upside has been taken into account for my forecast for 2023. At the same time, there is a risk that the company may face a slowdown as a result of the weakening macroeconomic environment in China. As such, I incorporate conservatism into my financial forecasts to take this into account as well.Second, for Local Services, Cainiao and other investments and associates held by the company, I value these by their latest transaction values and market capitalizations of the respective companies.Lastly, for Youku, International Commerce and Cloud, I use a DCF methodology to derive the value of these segments. I take into account the long-term growth opportunities for the International Commerce segment and the robust growth opportunities for the Cloud segment.Taking all these together, I also applied a 30% holding discount. In the cloud space, there are large players that continue to vie for market share in China. Lastly, in the international e-commerce segment, Amazon (AMZN) and Sea Limited's (SE) Shopee are the main contenders for Alibaba's e-commerce segment in the international region.Cloud risksAlibaba looks to be gaining business in non-Internet sectors while the demand for Internet sectors remains weak. There is a risk that other players in China may attempt to take share from Alibaba. This includes established cloud players like Huawei, Tencent (OTCPK:TCEHY), and China Telecom. This could slow growth for Alibaba's cloud segment in the near term as the competitive landscape sours.Conclusion2023 will be a great year for Alibaba, in my view. As mentioned earlier in the article, the fundamentals are improving for a business that has seen very negative sentiment for some time now. The improving China eCommerce outlook from the low base in 2022 and the reopening of the Chinese economy, as well as the improving business momentum for the cloud business, will drive top-line growth to re-accelerate. (NYSE:XPEV) [9868:HK]. My Neutral view on the stock is based on the premise that the company&#39;s shares aren&#39;t likely to rebound significantly (let alone return to $50 levels) in the near term. The negative headwinds hurting XPEV&#39;s shares such as investor style shift, supply chain disruptions for the Chinese automotive industry and concerns over the potential delisting of US-listed companies are likely to persist for a while. With its valuations reflecting most of the negatives after the sell-down in recent months, a Hold rating for XPeng is appropriate.</p><p><b>XPEV Stock Key Metrics</b></p><p>XPEV describes itself as &#34;a leading Chinese smart electric vehicle company that designs, develops, manufactures, and markets Smart EVs&#34; which targets &#34;technology-savvy middle-class consumers&#34; in its press releases. XPeng will report its Q4 2021 financial results on March 28, 2022, so I will review the company&#39;s most recent Q3 2021 financial metrics to see how the company has performed.</p><p>XPeng issued its Q3 2021 financial results media release on November 23, 2021 before the market opened, and this was well received by the market with XPEV&#39;s shares rising by +8% from $47.39 of November 22, 2021 to cross the $50 mark and close at $51.30 as of November 23, 2021. In the next week, XPeng&#39;s stock price gained further to reach a 52-week high of $56.45 on December 1, 2021, during intra-day trading.</p><p>The company&#39;s revenue expanded by +187% YoYin Q3 2021, and this was +9% better than what the market had anticipated. XPEV&#39;s vehicle deliveries almost tripled YoY from 8,578 units in Q3 2020 to 25,666 units in Q3 2021, and this exceeded the higher end of the company&#39;s earlier vehicle deliveries guidance of 23,000-25,000 units. Looking forward, XPeng expects to achieve vehicle deliveries of 35,500 units (mid-point of guidance) in the fourth quarter of 2021, which would be equivalent to a +174% YoY increase. XPEV also guided that its revenue should jump by +156% YoY to RMB7.3 billion (mid-point of guidance) in Q4 2021, which was +26% higher than the sell-side&#39;s consensus fourth-quarter top line estimate at the time of the Q3 earnings release.</p><p>But the good times did not last, as I highlight in the subsequent section.</p><p><b>Why Has XPeng Stock Dropped?</b></p><p>XPeng&#39;s stock price has fallen roughly by half since the start of the year. XPEV&#39;s shares fell from $50.27 as of January 3, 2022 (first trading day of the year) to $24.97 as of March 17, 2022.</p><p>In my opinion, there are three factors that have led to the severe decline in XPEV&#39;s share price.</p><p>Firstly, XPeng has suffered from a substantial valuation de-rating.</p><p>Investors have been rotating away from high (revenue) growth, loss-making stocks to profitable companies which are returning capital to shareholders via dividends or buybacks. This shift in investor preferences is aligned with expectations of rising interest rates in the future, which tend to be negative for high-growth companies.</p><p>Specifically, XPEV&#39;s consensus forward next twelve months&#39; Enterprise Value-to-Revenue multiple has compressed from above 8 times in late-November 2021 to 2.8 times as of March 17, 2022.</p><p>Secondly, there are concerns that the revenue growth and margins of Chinese electric vehicle companies like XPEV could disappoint the market in 2022.</p><p>Market consensus already expects XPeng&#39;s top line expansion to slow from +252% in fiscal 2021 to +97% in FY 2022. Besides a higher base for comparison in 2021, it is possible that supply chain disruptions could be a drag on Chinese electric vehicle sales in 2022. A recent March 11, 2021 <i>South China Morning Post</i> article highlighted that China Passenger Car Association&#39;s 5.5 million NEV (New Energy Vehicle) sales forecasts could be too bullish, as a researcher from North China University of Technology quoted in the article &#34;predicted that output of batteries and car chips may only be enough for 4.4 million NEVs this year.&#34;</p><p>Even if XPeng and its Chinese electric vehicle peers are able to secure sufficient semiconductor chips and batteries to meet market demand, it is likely to come at the expense of higher costs and wider losses. In other words, XPEV&#39;s 2022 year-to-date share price correction could be attributed to concerns of below-expectations financial results for the company this year.</p><p>Thirdly, worries about the potential risk of Chinese stocks delisting from the US might have hurt investor sentiment for XPEV as well.</p><p>XPeng&#39;s share price corrected from $28.65 as of March 9, 2022, to $19.75 as of March 14, 2022. This was linked to news of the SEC listing &#34;five China-based companies that could be delisted if they don&#39;t allow U.S. authorities to review company audits for three straight years&#34; as reported by <i>Seeking Alpha News</i> on March 11, 2022. XPEV&#39;s shares later rebounded strongly to close at $27.53 as of March 16, 2022, after <i>Xinhua News Agency</i> highlighted that &#34;the Chinese government continues to support various types of companies to list overseas.&#34; This seems to suggest that China will engage with the US on the topic of Chinese listings in the US and related audit issues.</p><p>XPEV is in a relatively better position than most other US-listed Chinese companies as its shares are already dual-listed in both the US and Hong Kong. But assuming that XPeng is eventually compelled to delist from the US market in a few years&#39; time, it is still a negative for the company&#39;s shares. The Hong Kong equity market or other stock markets for that matter are inferior to the US market in terms of liquidity and valuations. If XPEV ends up being solely listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, the company loses an important channel for further financing, and its valuations might further de-rate to be in line with the broader Hong Kong market.</p><p>In the next section, I assess XPeng&#39;s stock price outlook.</p><p><b>Can XPEV Stock Rebound To $50?</b></p><p>It is challenging for XPeng&#39;s share price to recover back to $50. Based on my calculations, XPEV&#39;s consensus forward next twelve months&#39; Enterprise Value-to-Revenue multiple will have to expand to 6.6 times for its shares to be valued at $50.</p><p>I am of the view that a significant rebound for XPEV&#39;s shares in the near term driven by valuation multiple expansion is unlikely. Although XPEV boasts slightly faster FY 2022 revenue growth rates as compared to its peers, its forecasted gross margin are the lowest in the peer group. As such, it is hard to argue that XPeng&#39;s shares are undervalued based on a peer valuation comparison.</p><p><b>Is XPEV Stock A Buy, Sell, Or Hold?</b></p><p>XPEV is a Hold. XPeng&#39;s valuations have already de-rated significantly, which prices the negatives to a considerable extent. (NYSE:XPEV) [9868:HK]. My Neutral view on the stock is based on the premise that the company's shares aren't likely to rebound significantly (let alone return to $50 levels) in the near term. The negative headwinds hurting XPEV's shares such as investor style shift, supply chain disruptions for the Chinese automotive industry and concerns over the potential delisting of US-listed companies are likely to persist for a while. With its valuations reflecting most of the negatives after the sell-down in recent months, a Hold rating for XPeng is appropriate.XPEV Stock Key MetricsXPEV describes itself as \"a leading Chinese smart electric vehicle company that designs, develops, manufactures, and markets Smart EVs\" which targets \"technology-savvy middle-class consumers\" in its press releases. XPeng will report its Q4 2021 financial results on March 28, 2022, so I will review the company's most recent Q3 2021 financial metrics to see how the company has performed.XPeng issued its Q3 2021 financial results media release on November 23, 2021 before the market opened, and this was well received by the market with XPEV's shares rising by +8% from $47.39 of November 22, 2021 to cross the $50 mark and close at $51.30 as of November 23, 2021. In the next week, XPeng's stock price gained further to reach a 52-week high of $56.45 on December 1, 2021, during intra-day trading.The company's revenue expanded by +187% YoYin Q3 2021, and this was +9% better than what the market had anticipated. XPEV's vehicle deliveries almost tripled YoY from 8,578 units in Q3 2020 to 25,666 units in Q3 2021, and this exceeded the higher end of the company's earlier vehicle deliveries guidance of 23,000-25,000 units. Looking forward, XPeng expects to achieve vehicle deliveries of 35,500 units (mid-point of guidance) in the fourth quarter of 2021, which would be equivalent to a +174% YoY increase. XPEV also guided that its revenue should jump by +156% YoY to RMB7.3 billion (mid-point of guidance) in Q4 2021, which was +26% higher than the sell-side's consensus fourth-quarter top line estimate at the time of the Q3 earnings release.But the good times did not last, as I highlight in the subsequent section.Why Has XPeng Stock Dropped?XPeng's stock price has fallen roughly by half since the start of the year. XPEV's shares fell from $50.27 as of January 3, 2022 (first trading day of the year) to $24.97 as of March 17, 2022.In my opinion, there are three factors that have led to the severe decline in XPEV's share price.Firstly, XPeng has suffered from a substantial valuation de-rating.Investors have been rotating away from high (revenue) growth, loss-making stocks to profitable companies which are returning capital to shareholders via dividends or buybacks. This shift in investor preferences is aligned with expectations of rising interest rates in the future, which tend to be negative for high-growth companies.Specifically, XPEV's consensus forward next twelve months' Enterprise Value-to-Revenue multiple has compressed from above 8 times in late-November 2021 to 2.8 times as of March 17, 2022.Secondly, there are concerns that the revenue growth and margins of Chinese electric vehicle companies like XPEV could disappoint the market in 2022.Market consensus already expects XPeng's top line expansion to slow from +252% in fiscal 2021 to +97% in FY 2022. Besides a higher base for comparison in 2021, it is possible that supply chain disruptions could be a drag on Chinese electric vehicle sales in 2022. A recent March 11, 2021 South China Morning Post article highlighted that China Passenger Car Association's 5.5 million NEV (New Energy Vehicle) sales forecasts could be too bullish, as a researcher from North China University of Technology quoted in the article \"predicted that output of batteries and car chips may only be enough for 4.4 million NEVs this year.\"Even if XPeng and its Chinese electric vehicle peers are able to secure sufficient semiconductor chips and batteries to meet market demand, it is likely to come at the expense of higher costs and wider losses. In other words, XPEV's 2022 year-to-date share price correction could be attributed to concerns of below-expectations financial results for the company this year.Thirdly, worries about the potential risk of Chinese stocks delisting from the US might have hurt investor sentiment for XPEV as well.XPeng's share price corrected from $28.65 as of March 9, 2022, to $19.75 as of March 14, 2022. This was linked to news of the SEC listing \"five China-based companies that could be delisted if they don't allow U.S. authorities to review company audits for three straight years\" as reported by Seeking Alpha News on March 11, 2022. XPEV's shares later rebounded strongly to close at $27.53 as of March 16, 2022, after Xinhua News Agency highlighted that \"the Chinese government continues to support various types of companies to list overseas.\" This seems to suggest that China will engage with the US on the topic of Chinese listings in the US and related audit issues.XPEV is in a relatively better position than most other US-listed Chinese companies as its shares are already dual-listed in both the US and Hong Kong. But assuming that XPeng is eventually compelled to delist from the US market in a few years' time, it is still a negative for the company's shares. The Hong Kong equity market or other stock markets for that matter are inferior to the US market in terms of liquidity and valuations. If XPEV ends up being solely listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, the company loses an important channel for further financing, and its valuations might further de-rate to be in line with the broader Hong Kong market.In the next section, I assess XPeng's stock price outlook.Can XPEV Stock Rebound To $50?It is challenging for XPeng's share price to recover back to $50. Based on my calculations, XPEV's consensus forward next twelve months' Enterprise Value-to-Revenue multiple will have to expand to 6.6 times for its shares to be valued at $50.I am of the view that a significant rebound for XPEV's shares in the near term driven by valuation multiple expansion is unlikely.
