banks trading close to their all-time highs, should you still add them into your investment portfolio?","content":"

Singapore’s three local banks enjoyed an amazing run last year.

Buoyed by higher interest rates and benign economic conditions, the trio of banks saw their share prices hit all-time highs.

DBS Group (SGX: D05) led the pack with a stunning 44% share price increase in 2024.

OCBC Ltd (SGX: O39) came in second with a 28.4% share price gain while United Overseas Bank (SGX: U11), or UOB, came close with a 27.7% jump.

The strong performance of the three banks propelled the Straits Times Index (SGX: ^STI) to a 17-year high and brought it close to its all-time high of 3,908 reached in October 2007.

However, investors have turned cautious.

With the three lenders logging big gains last year, is there still room to buy the local banks?

“Higher for longer” interest rates

It’s no secret that the banks have enjoyed their stellar run because of the surge in interest rates over the past two years.

From 2022 to 2023, interest rates rose at their fastest pace ever, with a 4.88 percentage point jump.

These rates were raised aggressively by the US Federal Reserve (“Fed”) to fight inflation.

However, the spectre of an economic slowdown looms when rates stay high as businesses and individuals hold back from borrowing.

The latest economic data from the US paints an optimistic picture, though.

For November 2024, nonfarm payrolls rose by 227,000 for the month, higher than estimates for 214,000.

The unemployment rate ticked slightly higher to 4.2%.

The US economy continues to produce a healthy number of jobs despite rates being where they are now.

Last month, the Fed made its third interest rate reduction for 2024, lowering its benchmark federal funds rate to a range of between 4.25% to 4.5%.

Despite the reduction, the central bank pencilled in just two interest rate cuts for this year, down from the four that it had forecast as recently as September.

This dot plot is good news for the three banks as a sustained high-interest-rate environment will benefit their net interest margins and prop up net interest income.

Incoming President Donald Trump’s policies may also prove inflationary as he has promised to impose harsh tariffs on trade partners.

Should these tariffs come to pass, the Fed may be forced to hold rates “higher for longer” to continue combating inflation.

Better non-interest income

Apart from net interest income, banks can rely on non-interest income to boost their total income.

Non-interest income consists of fees from dishing out loans, wealth management fees from managing investment portfolios, and credit card fees from consumers using their credit cards.

For the first nine months of 2024 (9M 2024), DBS Group saw a 27% year-on-year surge in non-interest income to S$3.2 billion.

OCBC’s non-interest income jumped 23% year on year to S$3.8 billion over the same period while UOB saw its net fee income climb 10% year on year to S$1.8 billion.

All three banks have done well to grow this component of their total income, and 2025 may have more to come.

DBS projects its non-interest income to grow by high-single-digits for 2025 while UOB sees “double-digit” fee growth.

Excess capital

Being conservatively managed has its perks as it allows banks to be more resilient and able to weather tough times when they arrive.

The trio of banks reported healthy excess capital that could be paid out to investors in the form of higher dividends while also reinvesting for growth.

DBS led the way by disclosing that it has around S$5.9 billion in excess capital, or around S$2 per share, that can either be used for share buybacks, higher ordinary dividends, or special dividends.

OCBC declined to disclose the amount of excess capital it has but CEO Helen Wong says that the lender has enough capital for mergers and acquisitions and business growth.

For UOB, CFO Lee Wai Fai said that the bank has excess capital of between S$2 billion to S$2.5 billion.

An optimistic outlook

Singapore recently reported that its GDP expanded by 4% for 2024, significantly better than the 1.1% GDP growth logged in 2023.

This ending figure is higher than the 3.5% GDP growth forecast by the Ministry for Trade and Industry back in November 2024.

UOB CEO Wee Ee Cheong projected high single-digit loan growth for this year while DBS has also forecast loan growth, though it did not specify the quantum.

Get Smart: Room for further growth

Investors in the three Singapore banks enjoyed healthy capital gains last year along with rising dividends.

2025 should be an interesting year where the banks maintain their net interest income while growing their non-interest income.

A healthy economy should also spur loan growth, which should help to mitigate any fall in the banks’ net interest margins.

The presence of excess capital enables the banks to sustain or even raise their dividend payments.

In short, there is room for further growth for the three banks, barring unforeseen circumstances.

","source":"thesmartinvestor_highlight","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; charset=utf-8\" three local banks enjoyed an amazing run last year.Buoyed by higher interest rates and benign economic conditions, the trio of banks saw their share prices hit all-time highs.DBS Group (SGX: D05) led the pack with a stunning 44% share price increase in 2024.OCBC Ltd (SGX: O39) came in second with a 28.4% share price gain while United Overseas Bank (SGX: U11), or UOB, came close with a 27.7% jump. The strong performance of the three banks propelled the Straits Times Index (SGX: ^STI) to a 17-year high and brought it close to its all-time high of 3,908 reached in October 2007.However, investors have turned cautious. With the three lenders logging big gains last year, is there still room to buy the local banks?“Higher for longer” interest ratesIt’s no secret that the banks have enjoyed their stellar run because of the surge in interest rates over the past two years. For November 2024, nonfarm payrolls rose by 227,000 for the month, higher than estimates for 214,000.The unemployment rate ticked slightly higher to 4.2%.The US economy continues to produce a healthy number of jobs despite rates being where they are now.Last month, the Fed made its third interest rate reduction for 2024, lowering its benchmark federal funds rate to a range of between 4.25% to 4.5%.Despite the reduction, the central bank pencilled in just two interest rate cuts for this year, down from the four that it had forecast as recently as September. This dot plot is good news for the three banks as a sustained high-interest-rate environment will benefit their net interest margins and prop up net interest income.Incoming President Donald Trump’s policies may also prove inflationary as he has promised to impose harsh tariffs on trade partners.Should these tariffs come to pass, the Fed may be forced to hold rates “higher for longer” to continue combating inflation.Better non-interest incomeApart from net interest income, banks can rely on non-interest income to boost their total income.Non-interest income consists of fees from dishing out loans, wealth management fees from managing investment portfolios, and credit card fees from consumers using their credit cards. For the first nine months of 2024 (9M 2024), DBS Group saw a 27% year-on-year surge in non-interest income to S$3.2 billion.OCBC’s non-interest income jumped 23% year on year to S$3.8 billion over the same period while UOB saw its net fee income climb 10% year on year to S$1.8 billion. All three banks have done well to grow this component of their total income, and 2025 may have more to come.DBS projects its non-interest income to grow by high-single-digits for 2025 while UOB sees “double-digit” fee growth.Excess capitalBeing conservatively managed has its perks as it allows banks to be more resilient and able to weather tough times when they arrive. The trio of banks reported healthy excess capital that could be paid out to investors in the form of higher dividends while also reinvesting for growth.DBS led the way by disclosing that it has around S$5.9 billion in excess capital, or around S$2 per share, that can either be used for share buybacks, higher ordinary dividends, or special dividends.OCBC declined to disclose the amount of excess capital it has but CEO Helen Wong says that the lender has enough capital for mergers and acquisitions and business growth. For UOB, CFO Lee Wai Fai said that the bank has excess capital of between S$2 billion to S$2.5 billion. An optimistic outlookSingapore recently reported that its GDP expanded by 4% for 2024, significantly better than the 1.1% GDP growth logged in 2023.This ending figure is higher than the 3.5% GDP growth forecast by the Ministry for Trade and Industry back in November 2024.UOB CEO Wee Ee Cheong projected high single-digit loan growth for this year while DBS has also forecast loan growth, though it did not specify the quantum.Get Smart: Room for further growthInvestors in the three Singapore banks enjoyed healthy capital gains last year along with rising dividends.2025 should be an interesting year where the banks maintain their net interest income while growing their non-interest income.A healthy economy should also spur loan growth, which should help to mitigate any fall in the banks’ net interest margins. The presence of excess capital enables the banks to sustain or even raise their dividend payments. In short, there is room for further growth for the three banks, barring unforeseen circumstances.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":25,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":380481910116656,"gmtCreate":1733927659643,"gmtModify":1733927663442,"author":{"id":"3573677486154929","authorId":"3573677486154929","name":"GarfieldLee","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4a282fc470586cdcaaecc2a102e0d42b","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3573677486154929","authorIdStr":"3573677486154929"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"<a sharply between August and October, Nio (NYSE:NIO) stock has essentially traded sideways. Some are considering buying in hope a turnaround is taking shape. After all, earlier in November, Reuters reported that the company was laying off a tenth of its workforce. While layoffs are unfortunate, they sometimes mark the beginning of a turnaround.

Layoffs can enable troubled firms to rightsize their businesses, resulting in improved operating performance. However, I wouldn’t assume that will be the case here with Nio. In fact, instead of serving as a sort of a silver bullet for Nio’s problems, the layoff announcement may mark the beginning of the end for this onetime high-flier. Read on, as I explain below.

NIO Stock Is a Lose-Lose Situation

Many growth stocks have bounced back this year, thanks to a combination of cost reduction efforts and re-accelerating growth. Yet if you’re banking a similar outcome will arise with Nio think otherwise. For one, it is highly questionable that any resurgence in growth is just around the corner.

Sure, last month, Nio reported year-over-year sales growth of nearly 60%. However, while impressive on a year-over-year basis, on a month-over-month basis, deliveries growth was far less impressive (just 2.77%).

As InvestorPlace’s Thomas Niel argued a few weeks back, this weak sales growth comes as competitors have reported considerably stronger sequential sales growth. It’s possible that competition is getting the better of Nio, with little suggesting that this “also ran” will soon surge back towards the front of the pack.

Meanwhile, while growth keeps stalling, job cuts may not get meaningful results when it comes to Nio’s path to profitability.

Layoff-related cost savings may be more than countered by a sharp decrease in gross margins and an increase in overhead expenses in recent quarters, as seen in Nio’s most recently-released quarterly results. With growth slowing down while net losses remain high, Nio appears set to be stuck in a “lose-lose” situation.

The Beginning of the End

While NIO stock has declined considerably since the height of the 2020/2021 EV stock bubble, the potential for Nio to bounce back after China’s Covid shutdown, and continue on a course towards becoming a global name in EVs was enough to sustain a valuation in the $10 billion to $20 billion range, despite high reported operating losses.

However, as the Chinese EV market has clearly bounced back, but Nio is hitting a growth wall, this bull case is finally shattered. Falling behind in its home market, the company may have to resign to becoming just a small name in the space.

Nio’s execution issues also make it very doubtful the EV maker will find success in overseas markets, despite continued expansion efforts in Europe, and the company’s aim to enter the U.S. market by 2025. While there’s nothing wrong with merely becoming a mid-sized automaker, a severely-limited growth runway means a further re-rating to the downside of Nio’s valuation.

This is likely the case, even if the company makes progress improving gross margins/right-sizing overhead in order to become profitable. Worse yet, if high losses continue, expect a severe de-rating.

Bottom Line: Avoid This Slow-Motion Car Wreck

When it comes to downside risk with NIO, assume it to be as high as 100%. Yes, at this moment, the company is not experiencing severe financial distress. The company’s war chest remains sufficient to absorb current cash burn.

However, as InvestorPlace’s Will Ashworth pointed out this week, Nio may only have cash on hand to sustain itself for another year. With this, it’s not out of the question to say that the company could need to conduct a highly-dilutive capital raise to get its financial house back in order.

If that’s not bad enough, it’s far from set in stone that (given current market conditions) Nio could obtain billions in new financing.

Until evidence to the contrary emerges, consider it best to keep avoiding the slow-motion car wreck that is NIO stock.

NIO stock earns a D rating in Portfolio Grader.

","source":"investorplace_stock_picks","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
NIO Stock Warning: The Beginning of the End is Here
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nNIO Stock Warning: The Beginning of the End is Here\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2023-11-17 20:56 GMT+8 InvestorPlace\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Following recent layoff news, some may be mulling a Nio (NYSE:NIO) stock purchase, on the view that a turnaround for the fledgling Chinese EV maker is taking shape. However, I wouldn’t make this ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{},"source_url":"https://investorplace.com/market360/2023/11/nio-stock-warning-the-beginning-of-the-end-is-here/","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"2384355514","content_text":"Following recent layoff news, some may be mulling a Nio (NYSE:NIO) stock purchase, on the view that a turnaround for the fledgling Chinese EV maker is taking shape. However, I wouldn’t make this assumption, as these layoff may signal the beginning of the end, rather than the start of a comeback, for NIO stock.A de-rating to the downside (perhaps even a severe one) may lie ahead, so stay away from this slow-motion car wreck. After declining sharply between August and October, Nio (NYSE:NIO) stock has essentially traded sideways. I believe the company’s strong earnings outlook might be overly optimistic given its past performance.

Let’s explore why caution may be warranted with PLTR stock at this point.

Recent PLTR Stock News

Recent PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) news underscores Palantir’s shift from military tech to civilian applications. Palantir has reportedly inked agreements with the asset management firm in Houston and an Italian medical foundation. Additionally, a substantial contract from Britain’s National Health Service is on the horizon, potentially valued at $580 million over five years. That’s great news for those who view Palantir as a growth story.

That said, while Palantir is profitable with $2.2 billion in annual revenues, its market cap stands at 15 times that figure. After going public in 2021, PLTR stock reached $35 per share but dropped to $6.40 this year before rebranding its database apps as “artificial intelligence.” The buzz around generative AI briefly tripled its value until recent interest rate increases.

Skeptics, like myself, view Palantir as overpriced, citing modest profits and a 13% year-over-year growth rate. According to Fintel, only 8% of the stock is shorted, but 57% of off-exchange trading volume is associated with short positions.

PLTR Headwinds Will Continue

Palantir’s stock, despite a recent surge, remains significantly below its peak of $39 per share in January 2021. Its revenue growth has slowed down, with a 24% increase in 2022 and an expected 16% growth in 2023, falling short of its earlier target of 30% annual revenue growth through 2025.

Palantir attributes its growth slowdown to government contract timing and commercial platform challenges but expects new features, like an AI Platform, to stabilize its long-term growth. Meanwhile, the company is cutting costs to boost adjusted operating margins, maintaining profitability and initiating a $1 billion buyback plan.

Valuation Is Vital

In conclusion, Palantir’s valuation is crucial. Despite its recent rally, with a price-to-sales ratio of approximately 15 times, the stock is priced for perfection. Palantir (NYSE: PLTR) has gained significant attention recently, with its stock more than doubling year-to-date, outperforming many other AI-related companies. For growth investors, the key question is whether PLTR stock is a worthwhile buy at its current levels or if its rally is mostly done. I believe the company’s strong earnings outlook might be overly optimistic given its past performance.Let’s explore why caution may be warranted with PLTR stock at this point.Recent PLTR Stock NewsRecent PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) news underscores Palantir’s shift from military tech to civilian applications. After going public in 2021, PLTR stock reached $35 per share but dropped to $6.40 this year before rebranding its database apps as “artificial intelligence.” The buzz around generative AI briefly tripled its value until recent interest rate increases.Skeptics, like myself, view Palantir as overpriced, citing modest profits and a 13% year-over-year growth rate. According to Fintel, only 8% of the stock is shorted, but 57% of off-exchange trading volume is associated with short positions.PLTR Headwinds Will ContinuePalantir’s stock, despite a recent surge, remains significantly below its peak of $39 per share in January 2021. Its revenue growth has slowed down, with a 24% increase in 2022 and an expected 16% growth in 2023, falling short of its earlier target of 30% annual revenue growth through 2025.Palantir attributes its growth slowdown to government contract timing and commercial platform challenges but expects new features, like an AI Platform, to stabilize its long-term growth. Meanwhile, the company is cutting costs to boost adjusted operating margins, maintaining profitability and initiating a $1 billion buyback plan.Valuation Is VitalIn conclusion, Palantir’s valuation is crucial. Despite its recent rally, with a price-to-sales ratio of approximately 15 times, the stock is priced for perfection. However, it could face substantial downside risks if it doesn’t maintain strong growth in both revenue and profits.Indeed, PLTR stock has fallen about 11% from its high this year due to reasons like a Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS) downgrade citing valuation concerns. Wall Street analysts are cautious, while retail investors see it as a momentum play. However, as the momentum wanes, investors in the AI space will likely favor companies with strong and growing margins, which Palantir lacks.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":303,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"hots":[{"id":389994771443912,"gmtCreate":1736221266605,"gmtModify":1736221270628,"author":{"id":"3573677486154929","authorId":"3573677486154929","name":"GarfieldLee","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4a282fc470586cdcaaecc2a102e0d42b","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3573677486154929","authorIdStr":"3573677486154929"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Never ever invest in Singapore stocks again. stunning 44% share price increase in 2024.

OCBC Ltd (SGX: O39) came in second with a 28.4% share price gain while United Overseas Bank (SGX: U11), or UOB, came close with a 27.7% jump.

The strong performance of the three banks propelled the Straits Times Index (SGX: ^STI) to a 17-year high and brought it close to its all-time high of id=\"id_863233360\">“Higher for longer” interest rates

It’s no secret that the banks have enjoyed their stellar run because of the surge in interest rates over the past two years.

From 2022 to 2023, interest rates rose at their fastest pace ever, with a 4.88 percentage point jump.

These rates were raised aggressively by the US Federal Reserve (“Fed”) to fight 4.2%.

\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; charset=utf-8\" its non-interest income to grow by high-single-digits for 2025 while UOB sees “double-digit” fee growth.Excess capitalBeing conservatively managed has its perks as it allows banks to be more resilient and able to weather tough times when they arrive. In short, there is room for further growth for the three banks, barring unforeseen circumstances.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":25,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":355993772560464,"gmtCreate":1727922117832,"gmtModify":1727922167457,"author":{"id":"3573677486154929","authorId":"3573677486154929","name":"GarfieldLee","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4a282fc470586cdcaaecc2a102e0d42b","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3573677486154929","authorIdStr":"3573677486154929"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"<a
