Economists had expected to see 225,000 new jobs added to the economy last month with the unemployment rate holding steady at 3.4%, according to data from Bloomberg.</p><p>Here were the key figures investors were looking for in Friday&#39;s report, with results compared January&#39;s figures:</p><ul><li><p><b>Nonfarm payrolls</b>: 311,000 vs. 504,000</p></li><li><p><b>Unemployment rate</b>: 3.6% vs. 3.4%</p></li><li><p><b>Average hourly earnings, month-on-month</b>: 0.2% vs. 0.3%</p></li><li><p><b>Average hourly earnings, year-on-year</b>: 4.6% vs. 4.4%</p></li><li><p><b>Labor force participation rate</b>: 62.5% vs. 62.4%</p></li><li><p><b>Average weekly hours worked</b>: 34.5 vs. 34.6</p></li></ul><p>Friday&#39;s report comes less than two weeks before the Federal Reserve&#39;s next policy meeting, with markets now expecting the central bank will raise interest rates by a more aggressive 0.50%.</p><p>Fed ChairJay Powell told lawmakers this week&#34;the ultimate level of interest rates is likely to be higher than previously anticipated.&#34;</p><p>Data from the CME Group ahead of Friday&#39;s release showed markets pricing in a 60% of a 0.50% rate hike on March 22.</p><p>Ahead of Friday&#39;s report, investors were closely watching for revisions to January&#39;s jobs data, which came in far stronger than forecast but was, in the eyes of some observers, boosted by seasonal factors and warm weather.</p><p>Revisions released Friday showed there were 504,000 jobs created in the first month of the year, a mere 13,000 fewer than previously reported.</p><p>Monthly job gains over the last six months have now averaged 343,000.</p><p>By industry, Friday&#39;s jobs report showed hiring remains particularly robust in the leisure &amp; hospitality sector, as well as retail, health care, and government jobs.</p><p>There were 105,000 new jobs added to the leisure &amp; hospitality industry in February, the most of any industry. These job gains were slightly higher than the 91,000 jobs created in this industry over the last six months, on average. Employment in this sector still remains 2.4% below pre-pandemic levels, the BLS noted in its report.</p><p>Construction employment, which Yahoo Finance&#39;s Jared Blikre flagged as a key area to watch with recession fears swirling, rose by 24,000 last month, in-line with the average monthly gain of 20,000 seen in this industry over the last six months.</p><p>Economists and strategists were also closely watching wages ahead of Friday&#39;s report, with average hourly earnings rising 4.6% over the prior year in February, an increase from the 4.4% jump seen in January but slightly below forecasts for a 4.7% uptick in wages on an annual basis.</p><p>Friday&#39;s report comes less than two weeks before the Federal Reserve&#39;s next policy meeting, with investors bracing for a more aggressive 0.50% rate hike after Fed ChairJay Powell told lawmakers this week&#34;the ultimate level of interest rates is likely to be higher than previously anticipated.&#34;</p><p>Concerns about the banking system given the crisis that has broken out at SVB Financial(SIVB) in the last 48 hours, however, have pushed market pricing back in favor of a more conservative 0.25% rate hike from the Fed later this month, data from the CME Group showed Friday morning.</p></body></html>","source":"yahoofinance_sg","collect":0,"html":"<!DOCTYPE html>\n<html>\n<head>\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; In the worst-case scenario, I will lose the premium I paid when the put options expire worthless.</p><p><b>A Market In Peril: Prepare For Alibaba&#39;s First Quarter With Less Than 0% Sales Growth</b></p><p>Alibaba&#39;sslowdown in spending in the June quarter was due to consumers&#39; decreased willingness to spend money.</p><p>Flatlining sales growth was an unthinkable development for Alibaba just a year ago, but a confluence of factors, including (but not limited to) high inflation, slowing retail sales growth in China, deflating economic growth, and increasingly hawkish monetary policies, has brought Alibaba to this point.</p><p>This week, for example, the Bank of England expanded its emergency bond-buying program in response to distress signals in the bond market, indicating that the global economy is in jeopardy.</p><p>Other recession warnings came from J.P. Morgan chairman Jamie Dimon, who predicted that the United States would enter a recession in 6-9 months.</p><p>The IMF recently reduced its growth forecast for 2023 to 2.7%, a 0.2 percentage point decrease from its previous estimate, and warned that&#34;the worst is yet to come&#34;.</p><p>Because Alibaba is a true eCommerce behemoth with 1.1 billion customers and tentacles spreading across the globe, particularly in Southeast Asia, the eCommerce company is a bet on global growth.</p><p>Given the global economic headwinds, Alibaba may report its first quarter of sales growth below 0% next month. Alibaba&#39;s growth already slowed to 0% in the June quarter, making it very likely that the Covid resurgence and headwinds to global economic growth resulted in a negative-growth quarter.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/bf34f124fd8bc06a3a75cee79c29ad8f\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"361\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>Sales Growth (Alibaba Group Holding)</p><p>A little more than two-thirds of Alibaba&#39;s sales continue to come from the Chinese market, implying that, in the short to medium term, Alibaba, despite its increasing integration into the global economy, is still essentially a bet on the Chinese market as a whole. Unfortunately for Alibaba, the domestic market is currently in disarray.</p><p><b>China&#39;s Economy Experienced A Sharp Downturn In 2Q-22</b></p><p>As China&#39;s largest eCommerce company, Alibaba is betting on the broad potential of the Chinese economy, which is in bad shape. China&#39;s GDP increased by only 0.4% in the second quarter, far less than the 1.0% predicted by economists. In the worst-case scenario, I will lose the premium I paid when the put options expire worthless.</p><p><b>A Market In Peril: Prepare For Alibaba&#39;s First Quarter With Less Than 0% Sales Growth</b></p><p>Alibaba&#39;sslowdown in spending in the June quarter was due to consumers&#39; decreased willingness to spend money.</p><p>Flatlining sales growth was an unthinkable development for Alibaba just a year ago, but a confluence of factors, including (but not limited to) high inflation, slowing retail sales growth in China, deflating economic growth, and increasingly hawkish monetary policies, has brought Alibaba to this point.</p><p>This week, for example, the Bank of England expanded its emergency bond-buying program in response to distress signals in the bond market, indicating that the global economy is in jeopardy.</p><p>Other recession warnings came from J.P. Morgan chairman Jamie Dimon, who predicted that the United States would enter a recession in 6-9 months.</p><p>The IMF recently reduced its growth forecast for 2023 to 2.7%, a 0.2 percentage point decrease from its previous estimate, and warned that&#34;the worst is yet to come&#34;.</p><p>Because Alibaba is a true eCommerce behemoth with 1.1 billion customers and tentacles spreading across the globe, particularly in Southeast Asia, the eCommerce company is a bet on global growth.</p><p>Given the global economic headwinds, Alibaba may report its first quarter of sales growth below 0% next month. Alibaba&#39;s growth already slowed to 0% in the June quarter, making it very likely that the Covid resurgence and headwinds to global economic growth resulted in a negative-growth quarter.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/bf34f124fd8bc06a3a75cee79c29ad8f\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"361\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>Sales Growth (Alibaba Group Holding)</p><p>A little more than two-thirds of Alibaba&#39;s sales continue to come from the Chinese market, implying that, in the short to medium term, Alibaba, despite its increasing integration into the global economy, is still essentially a bet on the Chinese market as a whole. Unfortunately for Alibaba, the domestic market is currently in disarray.</p><p><b>China&#39;s Economy Experienced A Sharp Downturn In 2Q-22</b></p><p>As China&#39;s largest eCommerce company, Alibaba is betting on the broad potential of the Chinese economy, which is in bad shape. China&#39;s GDP increased by only 0.4% in the second quarter, far less than the 1.0% predicted by economists. China&#39;s economic growth slowed from4.8% in the first quarter, and prospects for 3Q-22 don&#39;t look much better given the widespread resurgence of Covid-19 in the third quarter.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/dbf0bb45c254f5803f58783bcbd36677\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"355\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>China&#39;s GDP (Tradingeconomics.com)</p><p><b>$50 Price Level Would Be An Attractive Purchase Level</b></p><p>Alibaba&#39;s chart also does not look promising. BABA stock failed to sustainably breach through the 50-day moving average in August (and then again in October), which could have significantly improved Alibaba&#39;s chart situation.</p><p>Despite a brief surge in August following Alibaba&#39;sprimary listing in Hong Kong, the general stock price trend has been one of weakness and low trading volume, indicating that the market is waiting for news to react to.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5cea88cc848cd62f6c463780bc5f8366\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"521\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>Moving Average (Stockcharts.com)</p><p>I intend to close my short position around the $50 mark, at which point Alibaba&#39;s stock price will have fallen by more than 50% since I began my short position. It is also a valuation level at which I would feel comfortable reversing my trade and going long Alibaba.</p><p>The market currently forecasts $7.31 per share in Alibaba earnings for the fiscal year 2023, which may be an overly optimistic estimate given that the market is generally in decline and BABA is already down 6% as I write this.
