Box shares are up 31% since the beginning of 2020, while a broader cloud-computing index has almost doubled and the Nasdaq Composite has climbed 43%.\nThe company, which went public six years ago, has struggled to keep pace withMicrosoft’sexpansion into the cloud-based collaboration space, primarily through its popular Teams product. Box has faced pressure from activist investorStarboard since 2019, when the firm disclosed a 7.5% stake in Box.Reuters reportedlast month that, under fire from Starboard, Box has been exploring a sale to potential buyers including private equity firms.\nThe company said on Thursday that the KKR deal followed a review of its options.\n“After undertaking a comprehensive review of a wide range of strategic options, the Board unanimously determined that continuing to execute Box’s long-term strategy in combination with a significant share repurchase and the support of KKR, is the optimal path to drive the company’s next phase of growth,” Dana Evan, Box’s lead independent director, said in the statement.\nBox also said that co-founder and CEO Aaron Levie will hand over his position as board chair to Bethany Mayer, an independent director and the former CEO of Ixia.\nThe KKR investment will come in the form of convertible stock and will fund a share repurchase auction of up to $500 million. the news was more positive. By 1:15 p.m. EST, the Nasdaq Composite(NASDAQINDEX: ^IXIC)was up 1.5%, and other major benchmarks saw similarly strong performance.

Once again, some high-profile stocks were subject to short squeezes, and many investors focused their entire attention on the wild swings that their share prices saw. Yet amid all the uproar, a couple of high-qualityNasdaq stocksmanaged to climb to all-time records. Far from being caused by market hype, both of these companies stand a good chance of holding onto their gains and even pushing further into record territory.

Sponsored LinksTrade the Impact of the US Election with IC Markets.IC Markets

A strong quarter for Big Softy

Shares of Microsoft(NASDAQ: MSFT)were up more than 3% on Thursday afternoon. The move sent the software giant's market capitalization above $1.8 trillion, and despite an impressive advance over the past year, many investors in Microsoft see further upside ahead.

Thegood news for Microsoftstarted earlier this week, when the company announced its fiscal second-quarter financial results. The numbers were strong, with revenue climbing 17% year over year and net income soaring by 33% from year-ago levels. Microsoft saw consistently good performance across almost its entire corporate footprint, as sales jumped double-digit percentages in the productivity and business processes, intelligent cloud, and more personal computing segments. As we've seen repeatedly in recent quarters, cloud growth stood out, with total revenue climbing 23% on a 26% rise in server products and cloud services sales.

Most investors believe that Microsoft's future lies in maximizing its growth in cloud computing. Microsoft Azure has picked up some key wins lately, most notably when General Motors(NYSE: GM)agreed to have Microsoft become a partner in its Cruise electric vehicle venture in exchange for giving Azure a prominent status with Cruise and GM. Yet Azure doesn't get the same recognition as Amazon's Web Services division.

Microsoft has come a long way quickly, but its gains haven't been triggered by any short-term trading considerations. There are strong fundamentals underlying the stock, and that's why investors can feel confident aboutMicrosoft's chances to keep producing solid long-term returns.

A longtime fund giant with a modern approach

Digging even further into the little-followed realm, fund manager T. Rowe Price(NASDAQ: TROW)hit all-time highs Thursday, climbing more than 5%. The company had strong fourth-quarter results that showed how popular its fund offerings still are even as investing has changed dramatically.

T. Rowe Price's results show how lucrative the business still is. Net revenue jumped 18% to $1.73 billion, with net income soaring 44% to $783 million. That capped a surprisingly good year for the fund manager, as assets under management ended up rising 22% to $1.47 trillion. Strong markets played a big role in that, but the company also saw $2.2 billion in net inflows during the fourth quarter to support its business.

To keep up with the pace of transformation in the investing industry,T. Rowe Price has also jumped into the active ETF realm. Funds have had solid inflows even as many competitors struggle to remain viable. With ARK Invest having taken a lot of the mindshare in the active ETF space, it's encouraging to see T. Rowe Price's funds still gaining traction.

T. By 1:15 p.m. EST, the Nasdaq Composite(NASDAQINDEX: ^IXIC)was up 1.5%, and other major benchmarks saw similarly strong performance.Once again, some high-profile stocks were subject to short squeezes, and many investors focused their entire attention on the wild swings that their share prices saw. Yet amid all the uproar, a couple of high-qualityNasdaq stocksmanaged to climb to all-time records. Far from being caused by market hype, both of these companies stand a good chance of holding onto their gains and even pushing further into record territory.Sponsored LinksTrade the Impact of the US Election with IC Markets.IC MarketsA strong quarter for Big SoftyShares of Microsoft(NASDAQ: MSFT)were up more than 3% on Thursday afternoon. The move sent the software giant's market capitalization above $1.8 trillion, and despite an impressive advance over the past year, many investors in Microsoft see further upside ahead.Thegood news for Microsoftstarted earlier this week, when the company announced its fiscal second-quarter financial results. Yet Azure doesn't get the same recognition as Amazon's Web Services division.Microsoft has come a long way quickly, but its gains haven't been triggered by any short-term trading considerations. There are strong fundamentals underlying the stock, and that's why investors can feel confident aboutMicrosoft's chances to keep producing solid long-term returns.A longtime fund giant with a modern approachDigging even further into the little-followed realm, fund manager T. Rowe Price(NASDAQ: TROW)hit all-time highs Thursday, climbing more than 5%. The company had strong fourth-quarter results that showed how popular its fund offerings still are even as investing has changed dramatically.T. Rowe Price's funds still gaining traction.T. A Look At 3 Key Multiples","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1148947471","media":"TheStreet","summary":"Apple stock continues to push forward ahead of earnings – but have valuations gone too far, too fast","content":"
Apple stock continues to push forward ahead of earnings – but have valuations gone too far, too fast? The Apple Maven looks at three key ratios to determine if shares might be overstretched.
\n
In a matter of less than six weeks, Apple stock climbed from a 2021 low of about $116 per share to nearly $135. A similar spike of at least 15% within the same short period happened last in January, ahead of fiscal first quarter earnings, when Apple reached its all-time high of $143 apiece.
\n
But since getting to that early 2021 peak, Apple stock corrected as much as 19%, and remains underwater today. Therefore, the recent rally must have Apple investors wondering if the stock might have rushed too fast and too far from the business fundamentals.
\n
Apple stock: a look at relative valuation
\n
One way to address this concern is to look at relative valuations. These are ratios that link stock price (numerator) with certain financial metrics, including earnings and cash flow (denominator). The higher the valuation multiple, the more investors are willing to pay for a company’s fundamentals.
\n
Today, I look at three popular relative valuation metrics on Apple stock:
\n
\n
Price-to-earnings: probably the most well-known of them, P/E compares the price of a share of equity to the company’s net earnings per share. Here, I use the trailing metric based on historical earnings figures.
\n
Price-to-book: this is another multiple that focuses on equity value. P/B is the ratio between the market price and the book value of the stockholder’s ownership in the company.
\n
Enterprise value-to-earnings before interest and taxes: this is a total firm, rather than an equity-only, valuation multiple. EV/EBIT measures the market value of debt and equity combined, relative to the company’s pre-tax and pre-interest income.
\n
\n
Figure 1: AAPL's historical valuation multiples.
\n
The graph above depicts the three different valuation metrics described, but generally tells the same story. At least over the past three years, likely much longer, Apple stock has been trading at sky-high multiples this year, even if they seem to have moderated a bit since September 2020.
\n
The P/E ratio has passed the test that I proposed in late February: the multiple seems to have found a floor of 33 times, below which it has not stayed for long since around August 2020. The bad news is that Apple stock has consistently failed to sustain a P/E of more than 38 times, and the multiple seems range-bound for now.
\n
The P/B ratio catches my attention for having climbed very sharply since 2018: from a low of only 5 times to a whopping 34 times now. At play here are not only factors like higher growth expectations and lower interest rates, which impact most valuation multiples, but also the fact that Apple has been retiring equity aggressively. The fewer shares outstanding, the higher P/B tends to be.
\n
The Apple Maven’s take
\n
The data seems clear: Apple’s key valuation multiples look stretched, certainly relative to their own history. The harder question to answer is: are the ratios overdue for a pullback?
\n
Higher valuation multiples can reflect a number of assumptions, including: higher growth expectations, lower interest rates, a perception of decreased risk of ownership, among others. I believe that Apple stock probably deserves to be valued more richly now than, say, three or five years ago.
\n
At the same time, I think that Apple’s rich multiples could find upside resistance from here. Should Apple stock price rise, which it very well may, it will likely be the result of growth in financial metrics (sales, earnings, cash flow) rather than valuation expansion.
\n
Is the price right?
\n
Looking at a company’s business fundamentals is only half the work needed to find a good stock. The Apple Maven looks at three key ratios to determine if shares might be overstretched.\nIn a matter of less than six weeks, Apple stock climbed from a 2021 low of about $116 per share to nearly $135. A similar spike of at least 15% within the same short period happened last in January, ahead of fiscal first quarter earnings, when Apple reached its all-time high of $143 apiece.\nBut since getting to that early 2021 peak, Apple stock corrected as much as 19%, and remains underwater today. Therefore, the recent rally must have Apple investors wondering if the stock might have rushed too fast and too far from the business fundamentals.\nApple stock: a look at relative valuation\nOne way to address this concern is to look at relative valuations. These are ratios that link stock price (numerator) with certain financial metrics, including earnings and cash flow (denominator). The higher the valuation multiple, the more investors are willing to pay for a company’s fundamentals.\nToday, I look at three popular relative valuation metrics on Apple stock:\n\nPrice-to-earnings: probably the most well-known of them, P/E compares the price of a share of equity to the company’s net earnings per share. Here, I use the trailing metric based on historical earnings figures.\nPrice-to-book: this is another multiple that focuses on equity value. P/B is the ratio between the market price and the book value of the stockholder’s ownership in the company.\nEnterprise value-to-earnings before interest and taxes: this is a total firm, rather than an equity-only, valuation multiple. EV/EBIT measures the market value of debt and equity combined, relative to the company’s pre-tax and pre-interest income.\n\nFigure 1: AAPL's historical valuation multiples.\nThe graph above depicts the three different valuation metrics described, but generally tells the same story. At least over the past three years, likely much longer, Apple stock has been trading at sky-high multiples this year, even if they seem to have moderated a bit since September 2020.\nThe P/E ratio has passed the test that I proposed in late February: the multiple seems to have found a floor of 33 times, below which it has not stayed for long since around August 2020. The bad news is that Apple stock has consistently failed to sustain a P/E of more than 38 times, and the multiple seems range-bound for now.\nThe P/B ratio catches my attention for having climbed very sharply since 2018: from a low of only 5 times to a whopping 34 times now. At play here are not only factors like higher growth expectations and lower interest rates, which impact most valuation multiples, but also the fact that Apple has been retiring equity aggressively. The fewer shares outstanding, the higher P/B tends to be.\nThe Apple Maven’s take\nThe data seems clear: Apple’s key valuation multiples look stretched, certainly relative to their own history. The harder question to answer is: are the ratios overdue for a pullback?\nHigher valuation multiples can reflect a number of assumptions, including: higher growth expectations, lower interest rates, a perception of decreased risk of ownership, among others. I believe that Apple stock probably deserves to be valued more richly now than, say, three or five years ago.\nAt the same time, I think that Apple’s rich multiples could find upside resistance from here. Should Apple stock price rise, which it very well may, it will likely be the result of growth in financial metrics (sales, earnings, cash flow) rather than valuation expansion.\nIs the price right?\nLooking at a company’s business fundamentals is only half the work needed to find a good stock. How much one pays to own the shares is a key factor in the success of any investment. This is why valuation analysis is so important.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":456,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":378149430,"gmtCreate":1619012911620,"gmtModify":1704718290439,"author":{"id":"3574768270007894","authorId":"3574768270007894","name":"bbjammer","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f58a884c2f13e3a5e0ed95cf8ee21449","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3574768270007894","authorIdStr":"3574768270007894"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Good
