The estimated paper loss for the day for AMC shorts was $127 million, according to the data analytics company S3 Partners. \n
\n
\n Before Monday, shorts were up by $102 million in the stock, but with the latest surge in the price, it is now a losing short trade for 2024 by about $25 million. S3 Partners said AMC short interest is currently 55.9 million shares, or 19% of the float. So far this year, short interest has climbed 140%, or 32.6 million shares. \n
\n
\n That reversal is reminiscent of the meme-stock era, when buying by retail investors triggered share-price gains in a number of companies that led to losses for traders who had bet that the prices would fall. GameStop is the best-known example. \n
\n
\n AMC said when it reported its first-quarter earnings last week that it is still suffering from last year's actors' and writers' strikes, which have meant fewer films reached the market. Management said it expects second-quarter box-office ticket sales to remain below last year's record second quarter. \n
\n
\n AMC also has a heavy burden of debt, with significant obligations due in 2026, and is looking for ways to manage it. \n
\n
\n \"We remain optimistic that AMC will successfully navigate its current challenges, supported by a resilient management team dedicated to finding creative solutions for their debt issues,\" Benchmark analyst Mike Hickey wrote in a research note on Thursday. \n
\n
\n Although North American box office revenue fell 6% because of the strikes, \"AMC successfully maintained its revenue levels close to the previous year, increased its domestic market share, and enhanced per patron profitability metrics well above pre-pandemic levels,\" in part because of efforts to contain costs, the note said. \n
\n
\n \"We believe that box office growth will accelerate in the second half of 2024 and beyond, as recovery momentum picks up,\" Hickey wrote. \n
\n
\n Write to Janet H. Cho \n\n\n Investors have seen this movie before. \n\n\n A Monday rally in shares of the meme-stock favorite GameStop also lifted the theater chain AMC Entertainment Holdings. AMC stock closed up 78% at $5.19 on Monday, the highest close since the $5.29 closing price on Jan. 8, and the largest percentage increase since June 2, 2021, when shares rose 95%, according to Dow Jones Market Data. \n\n\n AMC not only snapped a five-day losing streak, but its preliminary trading volume of 476.3 million shares is the highest amount on record. \n\n\n People betting against the stock have taken a beating, just as they did in the meme-stock trading frenzy during the pandemic. The estimated paper loss for the day for AMC shorts was $127 million, according to the data analytics company S3 Partners. \n\n\n Before Monday, shorts were up by $102 million in the stock, but with the latest surge in the price, it is now a losing short trade for 2024 by about $25 million. S3 Partners said AMC short interest is currently 55.9 million shares, or 19% of the float. So far this year, short interest has climbed 140%, or 32.6 million shares. \n\n\n That reversal is reminiscent of the meme-stock era, when buying by retail investors triggered share-price gains in a number of companies that led to losses for traders who had bet that the prices would fall. Cyclical stocks are those whose performance tends to be in line with the economy.\nBut the analysts said several picks “stand out from our screens as looking cheap.”\nThree of Morgan Stanley’s recommendations have a potential upside of at least 20% to the bank’s share price target in a best-case scenario.\nThe analysts’ 6 stock picks are:\nFrench catering and services companySodexohas a potential upside of 23%, according to Morgan Stanley, which called it a “quality operator.” It described airport foodservice firmSSPin the same way, and said the stock has a 7% potential upside. SSP stock is up 16% since the start of the year, according to the bank.\nTwo of the bank’s picks have a potential upside of 29%: British pub companyMitchells and Butlers(M&B) and gambling firmFlutter, which operates brands including PokerStars and Betfair. It picked M&B as one of the “most attractive” stocks for free cashflow yield, noting its stock price has risen 32% since the start of the year.\nBritish hotel and restaurant operatorWhitbreadis also a pick for the bank, which estimated its upside potential at 10%, and it also chose gambling operatorEvolution, with a potential upside of 21%.\n“With investors continuing to look through what has so far been a later-than-expected reopening, we revisit our screens looking at 2019 and 2023 multiples (2020-22 distorted by Covid). We conclude that a lot of the recovery looks priced in with only a handful of names looking good value,” the bank’s analysts stated.\nMorgan Stanley’s valuations are based on its forecasts for 2023, assuming a return to normality after populations have been vaccinated against Covid-19. “Our bull cases factor in scenarios for structurally higher margins and/or higher market shares post-Covid,” its analysts wrote. Morgan Stanley is overweight all of the stocks mentioned, indicating it expects them to outperform.\n“Our strategists recommend quality at a reasonable price: Our EU Strategy team believe the macro environment has become somewhat less conducive for equity markets as growth momentum starts to peak and QE tapering discussions gather pace,” the analysts wrote.QE taperingrefers to the reduction in quantitative easing put in place by central banks to stimulate economies in light of the pandemic.\n“They also recently downgraded Cyclicals after a record rally which left positioning stretched and relative valuations at or near record highs. They believe this is an increasingly micro stock picking market over the summer and now recommend a more balanced approach to style and sector selection,” the analysts added.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":68,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[{"author":{"id":"3560092322694803","authorId":"3560092322694803","name":"dahae","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/137beae1f6048901843924ba46796740","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"idStr":"3560092322694803","authorIdStr":"3560092322694803"},"content":"btw if u leave a comment to ur comment , can also get points","text":"btw if u leave a comment to ur comment , can also get points","html":"btw if u leave a comment to ur comment , can also get points"}],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":375854717,"gmtCreate":1619326631139,"gmtModify":1704722501200,"author":{"id":"3574784818260396","authorId":"3574784818260396","name":"FanOfJPow","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ca91f9be17312fa7d5a41957afef8050","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3574784818260396","authorIdStr":"3574784818260396"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Like please ","listText":"Like please ","text":"Like please","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":7,"commentSize":3,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/375854717","repostId":"2130941364","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2130941364","pubTimestamp":1619323455,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2130941364?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-04-25 12:04","market":"hk","language":"en","title":"Why it’ll take more than easy money from the Fed to keep sparking this bull market in stocks","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2130941364","media":"MarketWatch","summary":"Much depends on investors' appetite for taking risk. \nGETTY IMAGES\nEveryone “knows” that the U.S. go","content":"
Much depends on investors' appetite for taking risk.
\n
GETTY IMAGES
\n
Everyone “knows” that the U.S. government’s massive stimulus is the reason the U.S. stock market took off from its March 2020 lows. But, as Humphrey Neill, the father of contrarian analysis, constantly reminded his clients: “When everyone thinks alike, everyone is likely to be wrong.”
\n
Conventional wisdom certainly appears to be based on the evidence. M2 money supply (consisting of cash, checking deposits, and so-called “near money” that can be converted into cash with little difficulty) has grown at a faster rate over the past 12 months than at any time over the last six decades. Sure enough, the S&P 500 has turned in one of its strongest 12-month returns ever.
\n
This is just one data point. To investigate whether it is the exception or the rule, I analyzed several decades of historical record in search of a statistically significant correlation between the Federal Reserve’s stimulus and the stock market. I came up empty. The bulls therefore need to think twice before reassuring themselves that the bull market will continue just because the Federal Reserve is committed to priming the monetary pump.
\n
In searching for possible correlations, I relied on two different measures of the money supply. I focused on M2 Money Supply (cash, checking deposits, and so-called ‘near money’ that can be converted into cash with little difficulty) and the Federal Reserve’s total balance sheet assets (a broader measure which reflects the Fed’s direct intervention in the economy through the purchase of securities and Treasuries). Regardless of the definition, however, the correlations between the stock market and money supply are not stable over time.
\n
On the one hand, over the last decade there has been a strong positive correlation, just as we’ve seen over the last 12 months and what the bulls are assuming is the general pattern. But, on the other hand, this correlation was negative before that, which meant that in those earlier years faster money supply growth was more often than not associated with slower stock market growth, and vice versa. That’s just the opposite of what the bulls are assuming.
\n
After this first pass through the data, the most we can say is that sometimes faster money supply growth is good for stocks, and sometimes it isn’t.
\n
That in turn suggests that the relationship between the money supply and the stock market is a lot more complex than most investors think. A full discussion of that relationship is beyond the scope of this column, but we know that it depends in large part on investors’ appetite for risk. In a “risk-on” environment, for example, it is more likely that aggressive Fed easing will be considered bullish. But when investors are preoccupied with the downside (“risk-off”) then an aggressive Fed might cause investors to become even more worried.
\n
As is often the case, John Maynard Keynes, the famous British economist of a century ago, shrewdly captured this dynamic. He pointed out that central banks will be powerless to stimulate the economy if there is no appetite for risk-taking, and in such an environment the Fed’s efforts will be like “pushing on a string.”
\n
Another indication of the complexity of the relationship between money supply and the stock market is how much money velocity varies over time. I’m referring to the average number of times that money changes hands in a given year. When velocity declines, it takes a bigger money supply to have the same economic impact. Or, to put it another way, a bigger money supply won’t be stimulating if velocity declines too much in the process.
\n
This puts recent experience in perspective. As you can see from the accompanying chart, velocity plunged at the beginning of the pandemic and remains at one of its lowest levels in six decades.
\n

\n
The bottom line: The money supply undoubtedly is related to the course of both the economy and the stock market. Instead, it will offer 3 months.\nAlso in July, the first subscribers to activate Apple's promotional offer will start to be automatically billed for the service after watching its shows for nearly 21 months for free.\nApple still has a much smaller content library than rivals such as Netflix and Disney.\n\nThe training wheels are about to come off for Apple TV+, the company's streaming video service.\nApple TV+ costs $4.99 per month. It's also bundled with other Apple services like Music and iCloud in packages called Apple One starting at $14.95 per month. But a lot of subscribers aren't paying.\nApple gave away a huge number of Apple TV+ of subscriptions to get the service off the ground. Starting in September 2019, anyone who bought an Apple product — an iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, or Apple Watch — got one year of Apple TV+ for free. During the pandemic, Apple extended the offer twice for people whose trial periods were about to expire.\nThe majority of Apple TV+ subscribers are still on the promotional offer, with 62% of current subscribers accessing Apple TV+ through a promotional package, according to survey data by Moffatt Nathanson published in January. Apple hasn't said how many subscribers the service has, but it has sold hundreds of millions of iPhones and other gadgets since late 2019.\nNow Apple is starting to wean Apple TV+ subscribers off the free plan.\nOn July 1, people who buy Apple products will be eligible for only 3 months of free Apple TV+, instead of a year, and people who already cashed on the trial can't get it again. Also during July, the first subscribers to activate the promotional offer will start to be automatically billed for the service after having access to its shows for nearly 21 months for free.\nThis creates a huge test for Apple.\nWill the millions of users currently on a free trial end up signing up for the $5 per month service or an Apple bundle because they can't go without Apple's shows? Or will they cancel?\nOthers may simply forget that they were on the trial and not immediately notice the new charges.\nApple reducing its reliance on free trials for Apple TV+ is a \"critical point\" for the service, said Parks Associates analyst Steve Cason, who follows the streaming industry.\n\"For newer or smaller services, partnerships and promotions are an invaluable customer acquisition tool,\" Cason said. \"A large percentage of folks follow through, they truly love the service and continue it. Or they forget they gave the service their credit card.\"\nFewer TV shows and movies than rivals\nApple TV+ has always had fewer hours of movies and TV compared to other streaming services, which may be a reason why it debuted with a lower price, versus to $8 per month for Disney+ or $8.99 for a standard Netflix plan.\nWhen Apple TV+ was launched in November 2019, it had nine original, Apple-backed shows and movies. Now it has around 87 original TV shows, movies and documentaries. That’s nowhere near what other services offer.\nHulu, for example, has thousands of shows, according to Reelgood data, many of which already have large fanbases because they were broadcast on TV.Netflix and Amazon Prime Video both have more than 1,000 licensed and original shows for customers to watch.\nApple has not licensed any non-exclusive shows for its service, and instead is only offering shows it financially backed. It hasn’t spent to buy media companies to fill out its back catalog, unlike Amazon, which recently agreed to acquire MGM Studios.\nMost of Apple’s shows star big-named producers and actors, such as Oprah and Steven Spielberg. However, talent is not exclusively tied to the company. Oprah’s biggest interview in recent memory, with Prince Harry, was broadcast on CBS. Steven Spielberg recently signed a deal with Netflix, too.\nStreaming ratings are notoriously secretive, and Apple’s never revealed how many viewers any of its shows have.\nWhen Apple executives are asked about the success of its content, they point to award nominations. In a press release last week,Apple said that its original shows have received 112 awards and 389 nominations, including Critics Choice awards, Golden Globes, and Oscars.\n“No matter what device you enjoy it from, it is a milestone period for Apple TV+, racking up many new award nominations and wins, including its first Oscar nominations,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said on a call with analysts in April.\nCook went on to praise one show in particular, “Ted Lasso,” which looks like Apple TV+‘s first big hit. The breezy comedy about an American soccer coach, which was based on an NBC advertisement poking fun at Americans’ ignorance about soccer, found a fanbase with its low-stakes banter.\n“Ted Lasso” season 2 will premier on July 23 and Apple will release new episodes weekly with an aim to get current subscribers on the trial hooked and potentially find new subscribers.\nA promotional email sent to subscribers this week highlights “Ted Lasso” in addition to a second season of “The Morning Show” starring Jennifer Aniston premiering in September. The email also promoted shows that have yet to premier, such as a comedy starring Will Ferrell and Paul Rudd called “The Shrink Next Door” and the sci-fi series “Foundation” based on Issac Asimov’s books.\nStill, “Ted Lasso” is a 30-minute comedy with only 10 episodes currently available, and overall, Apple’s library of content still trails far behind rivals.\n“Apple’s not in a position of strength here,” Moffett Nathanson’s Michael Nathanson said. “Although they have some excellent shows, they lack the scale of new releases, tentpole titles and a deep library to really create a large profitable business at this point.”\nPart of a whole\nIt’s hard to figure out how Apple TV+ stacks up to Disney or Netflix in terms of subscribers because Apple doesn’t release stats.\nNetflix has 208 million subscribers around the world. It would also be surprising if Apple can match Disney+’s 100 million subscribers, which it has built since Apple TV+ debuted.\nAnalysts are reluctant to offer estimates, but based on the number of smartphones Apple sells per year, tens of millions of people could have taken the promotional offer for Apple TV. Apple sold 206 million iPhones globally in 2020,according to an IDC estimate, and that doesn’t include the other Apple products that come with a free trial.\nEleven percent of U.S. households with a high-speed internet connection subscribe to Apple TV+, according to Parks Associates survey data. There are about 103 million households with broadband, according to Census data.\nThe percent of subscribers who could end up churning is also foggy. A Moffett Nathanson analysis of survey data suggests 29% percent of Apple TV+ subscribers don’t plan to renew and 41% aren’t sure yet. Only 30% said they planned to continue subscribing to Apple TV+.\nBut Apple never said it planned to take on Netflix, Cason said, so the total number of subscribers may not be that important to the company. He thinks that Apple TV+ is another one of several services designed to get users hooked on iPhones and Apple services, in line with Apple’s overall corporate strategy.\n“Apple wants to get you into their ecosystem through a device purchase, and once you get in there, they go, ‘We’ll give you Apple TV+. We also have Apple Music, podcasts, news, fitness, you can bundle them or you buy them separate,’” Cason said.\nIn fact, that’s how Apple thinks about its subscriber numbers. It said in April that it has 660 million paid subscribers across its services — but that also includes anyone who’s subscribed to an app through App Store billing.\nApple TV+ gives the company commercial-free content it can use to promote new audio and visual standards it builds into its products. For example, when Apple TV+ shows first debuted, they supported a Dolby HDR standard that produced better image quality when viewed through a supported Apple player. The next year, Apple announced that iPhones can film video using Dolby Vision HDR.\nMore recently, Apple launched a feature called spatial audio that works like advanced surround sound when listening on certain Apple headphones. Apple TV+ shows and movies support spatial audio, giving Apple customers the ability to watch a show in it without the company making sure that supported content is available from rivals.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":76,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":101807539,"gmtCreate":1619872085021,"gmtModify":1704335934898,"author":{"id":"3574784818260396","authorId":"3574784818260396","name":"FanOfJPow","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ca91f9be17312fa7d5a41957afef8050","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3574784818260396","authorIdStr":"3574784818260396"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Virgin Galactic(SPCE)$why say sorry","listText":"$Virgin Galactic(SPCE)$why say sorry","text":"$Virgin Galactic(SPCE)$why say sorry","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/15fb9da342792b9df6ce79daa9cd5cd3","width":"1080","height":"1638"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":4,"repostSize":1,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/101807539","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":656,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[{"author":{"id":"3577247465509612","authorId":"3577247465509612","name":"芳芳芳子","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/7f99d9d655e80981cbcdc1701587d4f9","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"idStr":"3577247465509612","authorIdStr":"3577247465509612"},"content":"u r so sick","text":"u r so sick","html":"u r so sick"}],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":120182326,"gmtCreate":1624315223765,"gmtModify":1703833039974,"author":{"id":"3574784818260396","authorId":"3574784818260396","name":"FanOfJPow","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ca91f9be17312fa7d5a41957afef8050","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3574784818260396","authorIdStr":"3574784818260396"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Okok like and comment guys","listText":"Okok like and comment guys","text":"Okok like and comment guys","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":3,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/120182326","repostId":"2145084835","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2145084835","pubTimestamp":1624280460,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2145084835?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-06-21 21:01","market":"us","language":"en","title":"5 Ultra-Popular Stocks Wall Street Views as Overvalued","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2145084835","media":"Motley Fool","summary":"If analysts are correct, these high-flying stocks will fizzle out over the next year.","content":"
Generally speaking, it pays to be bullish on Wall Street. Despite navigating its way through Black Monday in 1987, the dot-com bubble, the Great Recession, and more recently the coronavirus crash, the average annual total return for the benchmark S&P 500 since 1980, including dividends, is north of 11%.
\n
Not surprisingly, we see this optimism readily apparent in Wall Street's ratings on stocks. According to FactSet, more than half of all stocks carry a consensus buy rating, 38% have the equivalent of a hold rating, and just 7% are rated as sells. Yet, history shows that far more than 7% of stocks will eventually head lower.
\n
Based on Wall Street's consensus price targets, the following five ultra-popular stocks are all expected to lose value over the coming 12 months.
\n

\n
\n
Palantir Technologies: Implied downside of 12%
\n
Since its direct listing in late September 2020, data-mining company Palantir Technologies (NYSE:PLTR) has been a favorite among growth and retail investors. But if Wall Street's one-year consensus price target proves accurate, Palantir will head in reverse by up to 12%.
\n
The likeliest reason Wall Street is tempering expectations on Palantir is valuation. Specifically, Palantir ended June 17 with a market cap of nearly $48 billion, but is on track to bring in perhaps $1.5 billion in full-year sales in 2021. That's a multiple of about 32 times sales. Even if Palantir continues to grow its top-line at 30% annually, it could take years for this price-to-sales multiple to come down to anywhere close to the average for cloud stocks.
\n
Another possible concern is the growth potential for its government-focused Gotham platform. Big government contract wins in the U.S. have been primarily responsible for Palantir's exceptional growth rate. However, there remains an outside chance that President Joe Biden may curb funding to some of the federal agencies that employ Palantir's services.
\n
Over the long run, I'm optimistic and believe Palantir's platform is unlike anything else available. But tempering near-term expectations given its valuation premium may be warranted.
\n

\n
\n
Moderna: Implied downside of 11%
\n
Biotech stock Moderna (NASDAQ:MRNA) is arguably the biggest beneficiary of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. It's one of only three drugmakers to currently have their COVID-19 vaccine approved on an emergency-use authorization (EUA) basis in the United States. But if Wall Street's consensus 12-month price target is correct, it's stock is also on its way to a double-digit decline.
\n
Why the lack of love from Wall Street? The answer looks to be analysts looking to the future. While Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine is a mainstay in the U.S., and it's likely to play a clear role in other markets, time might prove the company's enemy. Over time, new vaccines are expected to come onto the scene, which'll eat away at Moderna's potential pool of patients.
\n
The other worry is that no one is exactly certain how long COVID-19 vaccine immunity will last. If it's a year, Moderna is unlikely to be the only drugmaker supplying booster shots. Meanwhile, if it's longer than a year, it means reduced sales opportunities for the company.
\n
Based solely on Wall Street's earnings per share consensus in 2021 and 2022, Moderna appears reasonably priced. But with the company staring down a potentially significant haircut in revenue next year as new drugmakers enter the space, caution is advised.
\n

\n
\n
GameStop: Implied downside of 71%
\n
This will probably come as a shock to no one, but Reddit favorite GameStop (NYSE:GME) is fully expected to fall flat on its face. Even though Wall Street's consensus price target for the company has quintupled in recent months, it still implies up to 71% downside over the next year.
\n
The biggest issue for GameStop is that its valuation has completely detached from its underlying fundamentals. While it's not uncommon for stocks to trade on emotion for short periods of time, operating performance is what always dictates the long-term movement in the share price of a stock. When it comes to operating performance, GameStop has been a dud.
\n
Although the company's first-quarter fiscal results highlighted a 25% net sales increase from the prior-year period, total sales for the company have been falling precipitously for years. That's because video game retailer GameStop recognized the shift to digital gaming too late, and it's now stuck with its massive portfolio of brick-and-mortar gaming stores. Even though e-commerce sales have been a bright spot for the company, slashing costs and closing stores remains its No. 1 priority.
\n
With sufficient cash, bankruptcy isn't a concern for GameStop. But without any true top-line growth and the company still losing money, it's an impossible sell at its current price tag.
\n

\n
\n
Ocugen: Implied downside of 18%
\n
Volatile clinical-stage biotech stock Ocugen (NASDAQ:OCGN) may also be in for an unpleasant next 12 months. The company behind an experimental COVID-19 vaccine (Covaxin) and a trio of internally developed eye-blindness candidates is expected to shed 18% of its value, if Wall Street's consensus price target is correct.
\n
Arguably the biggest issue for Ocugen is the clinical update the company issued on June 10 concerning Covaxin. Even though partner Bharat Biotech led a large clinical study in India that yielded an overall efficacy of 78%, along with 100% efficacy in preventing severe forms of COVID-19, Ocugen announced on June 10 that it would forgo seeking an EUA in the U.S. and would instead file for a biologics license application. In other words, Ocugen's path to a quick emergency approval in the U.S. just flew out the window.
\n
What's more, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's requested additional information and data on Covaxin. This is a fancy of saying that Ocugen will very likely have to run a clinical study in the U.S. prior to submitting Covaxin for approval. That means added costs and an even longer wait before Ocugen has a chance to penetrate the lucrative U.S. market.
\n
Though it's impossible to predict how long COVID-19 vaccine immunity will last, Ocugen's chances of being a significant player in the U.S. COVID-19 vaccine space are dwindling.
\n

\n
\n
NVIDIA: Implied downside of 3%
\n
Don't adjust your computer, laptop, or smartphone screens -- that really says NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA). Despite navigating its way through Black Monday in 1987, the dot-com bubble, the Great Recession, and more recently the coronavirus crash, the average annual total return for the benchmark S&P 500 since 1980, including dividends, is north of 11%.\nNot surprisingly, we see this optimism readily apparent in Wall Street's ratings on stocks. According to FactSet, more than half of all stocks carry a consensus buy rating, 38% have the equivalent of a hold rating, and just 7% are rated as sells. Yet, history shows that far more than 7% of stocks will eventually head lower.\nBased on Wall Street's consensus price targets, the following five ultra-popular stocks are all expected to lose value over the coming 12 months.\n\nImage source: Getty Images.\nPalantir Technologies: Implied downside of 12%\nSince its direct listing in late September 2020, data-mining company Palantir Technologies (NYSE:PLTR) has been a favorite among growth and retail investors. But if Wall Street's one-year consensus price target proves accurate, Palantir will head in reverse by up to 12%.\nThe likeliest reason Wall Street is tempering expectations on Palantir is valuation. Specifically, Palantir ended June 17 with a market cap of nearly $48 billion, but is on track to bring in perhaps $1.5 billion in full-year sales in 2021. That's a multiple of about 32 times sales. Even if Palantir continues to grow its top-line at 30% annually, it could take years for this price-to-sales multiple to come down to anywhere close to the average for cloud stocks.\nAnother possible concern is the growth potential for its government-focused Gotham platform. Big government contract wins in the U.S. have been primarily responsible for Palantir's exceptional growth rate. However, there remains an outside chance that President Joe Biden may curb funding to some of the federal agencies that employ Palantir's services.\nOver the long run, I'm optimistic and believe Palantir's platform is unlike anything else available. But tempering near-term expectations given its valuation premium may be warranted.\n\nImage source: Getty Images.\nModerna: Implied downside of 11%\nBiotech stock Moderna (NASDAQ:MRNA) is arguably the biggest beneficiary of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. It's one of only three drugmakers to currently have their COVID-19 vaccine approved on an emergency-use authorization (EUA) basis in the United States. But if Wall Street's consensus 12-month price target is correct, it's stock is also on its way to a double-digit decline.\nWhy the lack of love from Wall Street? The answer looks to be analysts looking to the future. While Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine is a mainstay in the U.S., and it's likely to play a clear role in other markets, time might prove the company's enemy. Over time, new vaccines are expected to come onto the scene, which'll eat away at Moderna's potential pool of patients.\nThe other worry is that no one is exactly certain how long COVID-19 vaccine immunity will last. If it's a year, Moderna is unlikely to be the only drugmaker supplying booster shots. Meanwhile, if it's longer than a year, it means reduced sales opportunities for the company.\nBased solely on Wall Street's earnings per share consensus in 2021 and 2022, Moderna appears reasonably priced. But with the company staring down a potentially significant haircut in revenue next year as new drugmakers enter the space, caution is advised.\n\nImage source: Getty Images.\nGameStop: Implied downside of 71%\nThis will probably come as a shock to no one, but Reddit favorite GameStop (NYSE:GME) is fully expected to fall flat on its face. Even though Wall Street's consensus price target for the company has quintupled in recent months, it still implies up to 71% downside over the next year.\nThe biggest issue for GameStop is that its valuation has completely detached from its underlying fundamentals. While it's not uncommon for stocks to trade on emotion for short periods of time, operating performance is what always dictates the long-term movement in the share price of a stock. When it comes to operating performance, GameStop has been a dud.\nAlthough the company's first-quarter fiscal results highlighted a 25% net sales increase from the prior-year period, total sales for the company have been falling precipitously for years. That's because video game retailer GameStop recognized the shift to digital gaming too late, and it's now stuck with its massive portfolio of brick-and-mortar gaming stores. Even though e-commerce sales have been a bright spot for the company, slashing costs and closing stores remains its No. 1 priority.\nWith sufficient cash, bankruptcy isn't a concern for GameStop. But without any true top-line growth and the company still losing money, it's an impossible sell at its current price tag.\n\nImage source: Getty Images.\nOcugen: Implied downside of 18%\nVolatile clinical-stage biotech stock Ocugen (NASDAQ:OCGN) may also be in for an unpleasant next 12 months. The company behind an experimental COVID-19 vaccine (Covaxin) and a trio of internally developed eye-blindness candidates is expected to shed 18% of its value, if Wall Street's consensus price target is correct.\nArguably the biggest issue for Ocugen is the clinical update the company issued on June 10 concerning Covaxin. In other words, Ocugen's path to a quick emergency approval in the U.S. just flew out the window.\nWhat's more, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's requested additional information and data on Covaxin. This is a fancy of saying that Ocugen will very likely have to run a clinical study in the U.S. prior to submitting Covaxin for approval. That means added costs and an even longer wait before Ocugen has a chance to penetrate the lucrative U.S. market.\nThough it's impossible to predict how long COVID-19 vaccine immunity will last, Ocugen's chances of being a significant player in the U.S. COVID-19 vaccine space are dwindling.\n\nImage source: Getty Images.\nNVIDIA: Implied downside of 3%\nDon't adjust your computer, laptop, or smartphone screens -- that really says NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA). Following its incredible run higher (NVIDIA has doubled over the past year), graphics processing unit giant NVIDIA closed 3% above Wall Street's consensus price target, as of June 17.\nOne reason for tempered expectations at this point has to be valuation. Even with NVIDIA crushing expectations and seeing strong PC gaming demand, sales growth is expected to slow from an estimated 49% in fiscal 2022 to a high single digit percentage in each of the next two fiscal years. In fact, the company closed at nearly 20 times projected sales for the current fiscal year. That's a bit optimistic given an expected sales growth slowdown.\nPerhaps the other reason Wall Street expects NVIDIA to go sideways is the company's cryptocurrency mining chip segment. While sales of crypto chips could hit $400 million in the current quarter, demand is entirely dependent on the hype surrounding digital currencies and the favorability of technical charts. Crypto is just as well known for its long bear markets as it is for the big gains it's delivered over the past decade. If another lull strikes, a fast-growing ancillary segment for NVIDA could easily become a drag.\nFor what it's worth, I see no fundamental reasons to sell NVIDIA if you're already a long-term shareholder.
