Furthermore, with stocks at all time highs, it is to be expected that most of the June open interest is below the current SPX spot price. As shown in the chart below, the dual peaks are at 3,900 and 4,150. This means that after Friday, there may be a certain \"anti\"-gravity around those spots until gamma is refilled.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/adfcada2b0ef3f2ebbd684649a613043\" tg-width=\"936\" tg-height=\"541\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>The Goldman strategist then explains what he believes is below the abnormally low level of realized market vol, noting that - as we discussed last week - it is consistent with long gamma positioning. Consider that SPX<b>realized volatility over the past 13 trading days has been just 5.1% - the lowest 13-day realized vol since 2019.</b></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/afffda1e07736784ad695d95a9936421\" tg-width=\"952\" tg-height=\"558\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>This contrasts with extreme volatility in pockets of the single stock market; AMC, which had the highest contract volume among single stocks last week (but far less notional volume at$7bln/day than AMZN’s leading $120bln/day), has had close to 400% realized vol over the same period.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/df2b7aeaadb37160a7eaf0ac08ba31de\" tg-width=\"1236\" tg-height=\"561\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>Then, as Nomura's Charlie McElligott first noted last week, Goldman's derivatives team agrees that<b>the extremely low SPX realized volatility is consistent with the possibility that 18-Jun has left “the street” long index gamma, in which case Fishman echoeswhat we said last week, namely that \"realized volatility could pick up once positions are cleaner. \"</b>Meanwhile, the rising beta of VIX futures to the SPX indicates that investors expect short gamma dynamics to pick up should markets sell off. Furthermore, with stocks at all time highs, it is to be expected that most of the June open interest is below the current SPX spot price. As shown in the chart below, the dual peaks are at 3,900 and 4,150. This means that after Friday, there may be a certain \"anti\"-gravity around those spots until gamma is refilled.\n\nThe Goldman strategist then explains what he believes is below the abnormally low level of realized market vol, noting that - as we discussed last week - it is consistent with long gamma positioning. There certainly hasn’t been any panic. Chair Jerome Powell did say to take the dot plot with a “big grain of salt.” Also the central bank didn’t say when it would start tapering its bond purchases, with Powell calling this month’s meeting the “talking about talking about” one.</p>\n<p>So all in all, a big takeaway was that the Fed may be engaging in one of those summer traditions of easing cautiously into cold water while still trying to keep its swimsuit dry. While the market wasn’t particularly warm to what the Fed had to say, it’s not like the bottom fell out.</p>\n<p>In earnings news this morning, grocery giant&nbsp;<b>Kroger</b>&nbsp;rung up solid earnings, raised full-year guidance, and announced a billion-dollar stock buyback … and shares were near unchanged in premarket trading. As we’ve seen in recent days, retailers can have a hard time impressing investors in the post-Covid world. Shares of homebuilder&nbsp;<b>Lennar</b>&nbsp;are pointing green after releasing better-than-expected earnings and offering up some positive words on the demand outlook. Remember:&nbsp;Homebuilders have had a tough time&nbsp;navigating the pandemic, with low-interest rates and high demand countered by soaring costs of labor, raw materials, and building supplies.</p>\n<p>Another stock in the green—literally and figuratively—is&nbsp;<b>Ford</b>&nbsp;, which issued strong Q2 guidance ahead of the Deutsche Bank Auto Conference. Shares of F, which are up more than 70% this year, soared another 3% ahead of the open. F and rival U.S. automaker&nbsp;<b>General Motors</b>GM 0.91%have grabbed the headlines in recent days amid plans to shift electric vehicle production into high gear.</p>\n<p>A (Somewhat) Jarring Jolt</p>\n<p>Yesterday, stock indices quickly fell to session lows when the Fed issued projections showing much better chances of a rate hike next year. It also raised its inflation growth estimate for this year pretty sharply.</p>\n<p>These moves led to thoughts among analysts that a taper of the Fed’s $120 billion a month bond-buying program might start by late this year or early next, though the Fed is sticking by it for now.</p>\n<p>Seven members of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) now expect at least one rate hike next year, up from four who did at the Fed’s March meeting. Also, 13 FOMC members expect rates to rise in 2023, up from seven in March. The meeting basically seems to indicate we can expect a rate hike possibly by late 2023, rather than the 2024 timing projected after the March meeting.</p>\n<p>But stocks did recover somewhat yesterday, and the laggard&nbsp;<b>Dow Jones Industrial Average</b>&nbsp;($DJI) was able to regain the 34,000 mark when all was said and done.</p>\n<p>Is It Worth A&nbsp;Taper Tantrum?</p>\n<p>Even though really-cheap-money may be coming to an end sooner than some had expected, it doesn’t seem like the present situation is anything to go too crazy over. It’s unclear if the Fed will really change course until we get a handle on employment and some of the government subsidies start to dry up. Last week’s Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey report showed a historically high level of job openings. It’s hard to imagine the Fed getting too hawkish while all those jobs are left to be filled.</p>\n<p>The Fed’s actual press release didn’t change all that much from March. It did say the country is making progress on vaccinations, easing the crisis. There was no change in its asset purchase language and its aiming for inflation above 2% for some time. Even though the Fed raised its inflation projection, it continues to say inflation is “transitory.”</p>\n<p>Fed officials continue to cite short-term supply bottlenecks caused by sharp increases in demand as the economy reopens following the pandemic. The supply shortages, they say, will fade as the year continues. There is still a place in many investor portfolios for companies where the bottom line is, well, the bottom line. But investing in line with environmental, social, and governance goals has taken hold in the minds of many investors. This so-called ESG investing is not only associated with stock, but also bonds. Research company BloombergNEF this month reported that money borrowed for ESG purposes has surpassed $3 trillion.</p>\n<p>That sustainable debt milestone “highlights the rapid growth this once-niche corner of investing has seen lately, with the most recent trillion dollars issued in just the last eight months,” the research company said. It took almost 12 years to reach the $1 trillion mark since sustainable debt labeling began and less than two years to reach the second trillion, according to BloombergNEF.</p>\n<p><b>Charging Up:</b>Continuing with the sustainability theme, it may seem that&nbsp;<b>Tesla</b>&nbsp;dominates the headlines for electric vehicles, but the company is facing increased competition from both electric vehicle upstarts like&nbsp;<b>Kandi Technologies Group</b>&nbsp;,&nbsp;<b>Li Auto</b>&nbsp;, and&nbsp;<b>NIO</b>&nbsp;but also from traditional automakers like&nbsp;<b>General Motors</b>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<b>Ford</b>&nbsp;. Indeed, BloombergNEF this month released its latest annual Electric Vehicle Outlook that says even with no additional policy measures global sales of zero-emission cars will rise from 4% of the market in 2020 to 70% by 2040, led by China, the United States and European economies.</p>\n<p><b>Catching The Bus:</b>But the electric vehicle push also offers investors opportunities beyond cars. The BloombergNEF EV outlook sees global sales of zero-emission buses rising to 83%, light commercial vehicles to 60%, and medium and heavy commercial vehicles to just over 30% of their respective markets by 2040. In recent related news, a California program that provides cash vouchers to reduce the purchase price for operators of electric commercial vehicles recently said enough funding has been requested to fund more than 900 vehicles, and more funds will be available in August. One company that could benefit is&nbsp;<b>Lion Electric</b>&nbsp;. According to research from BMO Capital Markets, the West Coast state is the largest target market for the company’s electric school buses and trucks.</p>\n<p>“We understand Lion has applied for a few vouchers for customers with results to be determined within weeks,” a BMO research note said. “These could represent some orders toward what Lion needs to secure over the next 18 months to achieve our 2022 sales projection for 2,475 vehicles.” Just as with the proliferation of electric car makers, there also are a growing number of companies involved in heavier electric vehicles, including LEV,&nbsp;<b>Arrival</b>ARVL 6.42%,&nbsp;<b>BYD Co.</b>&nbsp;(OTCMKTS: BYDDY),&nbsp;<b>Nikola Corp.</b>&nbsp;. There certainly hasn’t been any panic. Chair Jerome Powell did say to take the dot plot with a “big grain of salt.” Also the central bank didn’t say when it would start tapering its bond purchases, with Powell calling this month’s meeting the “talking about talking about” one.\nSo all in all, a big takeaway was that the Fed may be engaging in one of those summer traditions of easing cautiously into cold water while still trying to keep its swimsuit dry. While the market wasn’t particularly warm to what the Fed had to say, it’s not like the bottom fell out.\nIn earnings news this morning, grocery giant Kroger rung up solid earnings, raised full-year guidance, and announced a billion-dollar stock buyback … and shares were near unchanged in premarket trading. As we’ve seen in recent days, retailers can have a hard time impressing investors in the post-Covid world. Shares of homebuilder Lennar are pointing green after releasing better-than-expected earnings and offering up some positive words on the demand outlook. Remember: Homebuilders have had a tough time navigating the pandemic, with low-interest rates and high demand countered by soaring costs of labor, raw materials, and building supplies.\nAnother stock in the green—literally and figuratively—is Ford , which issued strong Q2 guidance ahead of the Deutsche Bank Auto Conference. Shares of F, which are up more than 70% this year, soared another 3% ahead of the open. F and rival U.S. automaker General MotorsGM 0.91%have grabbed the headlines in recent days amid plans to shift electric vehicle production into high gear.\nA (Somewhat) Jarring Jolt\nYesterday, stock indices quickly fell to session lows when the Fed issued projections showing much better chances of a rate hike next year. It also raised its inflation growth estimate for this year pretty sharply.\nThese moves led to thoughts among analysts that a taper of the Fed’s $120 billion a month bond-buying program might start by late this year or early next, though the Fed is sticking by it for now.\nSeven members of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) now expect at least one rate hike next year, up from four who did at the Fed’s March meeting. Also, 13 FOMC members expect rates to rise in 2023, up from seven in March. The meeting basically seems to indicate we can expect a rate hike possibly by late 2023, rather than the 2024 timing projected after the March meeting.\nBut stocks did recover somewhat yesterday, and the laggard Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DJI) was able to regain the 34,000 mark when all was said and done.\nIs It Worth A Taper Tantrum?\nEven though really-cheap-money may be coming to an end sooner than some had expected, it doesn’t seem like the present situation is anything to go too crazy over. It’s unclear if the Fed will really change course until we get a handle on employment and some of the government subsidies start to dry up. Last week’s Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey report showed a historically high level of job openings. It’s hard to imagine the Fed getting too hawkish while all those jobs are left to be filled.\nThe Fed’s actual press release didn’t change all that much from March. It did say the country is making progress on vaccinations, easing the crisis. There was no change in its asset purchase language and its aiming for inflation above 2% for some time. Even though the Fed raised its inflation projection, it continues to say inflation is “transitory.”\nFed officials continue to cite short-term supply bottlenecks caused by sharp increases in demand as the economy reopens following the pandemic. The supply shortages, they say, will fade as the year continues. Let’s hope they’re right.\nCHART OF THE DAY: IN TANDEM:The US dollar index ($DXY—purple line) and 10-Year Treasury Note Yield Index (TNX—candlestick) both popped nicely on the Fed news yesterday. Indeed, BloombergNEF this month released its latest annual Electric Vehicle Outlook that says even with no additional policy measures global sales of zero-emission cars will rise from 4% of the market in 2020 to 70% by 2040, led by China, the United States and European economies.\nCatching The Bus:But the electric vehicle push also offers investors opportunities beyond cars. The BloombergNEF EV outlook sees global sales of zero-emission buses rising to 83%, light commercial vehicles to 60%, and medium and heavy commercial vehicles to just over 30% of their respective markets by 2040. In recent related news, a California program that provides cash vouchers to reduce the purchase price for operators of electric commercial vehicles recently said enough funding has been requested to fund more than 900 vehicles, and more funds will be available in August. One company that could benefit is Lion Electric . While it may be tempting, it is too soon to add Federal Reserve policymakers to that list.</p>\n<p>Much will be made next week out of some potentially \"hawkish\" sounds from the U.S. central bank's policy meeting, economists said, while they stressed that Fed Chairman Jerome Powell and the majority of the voting members of the interest rate setting committee remain \"doves\" and fundamentally will be sticking to their \"patient\" stance on monetary policy.</p>\n<p>\"They are going to be a little bit less dovish than last time,\" said Jim O'Sullivan, chief U.S. macro strategist for TD Securities.</p>\n<p>U.S. inflation has been sizzling in recent months.</p>\n<p>But the recent decline in long-term Treasury yields allows the Fed to lean into the hawkish message, O'Sullivan said.</p>\n<p>While inflation has been surprisingly hot, the Fed \"is willing to wait\" until the fall to see how the labor market responds to the inflation spike, said Ian Shepherdson, chief economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics. Wage pressures play a key role in determining the inflation outlook.</p>\n<p>\"We don't know how many people will come back into the labor market, how participation will rise, and will it be enough to dampen inflationary pressures,\" Shepherdson said.</p>\n<p>\"In the olden days, the Fed would have raised interest rates first and worried about what was going to happen afterwards. But this is a different Fed with a different strategy and a different approach,\" he said.</p>\n<p>The Fed is buying $80 billion of Treasurys and $40 billion of mortgage backed securities each month, along with keeping its benchmark interest rate close to zero, to support the economy.</p>\n<p>The central bank put itself in a bit of a box in December by guiding markets that it wouldn't slow down the pace of purchases until there had been \"substantial further progress\" in its goals of full employment and stable inflation.</p>\n<p>What will be the hawkish sounds?</p>\n<p>First, the Fed will give in to the reality that talking about tapering the size of its asset purchases makes sense. This is an important shift. Since December, Powell has managed to hold off such talk.</p>\n<p>But this is only the most preliminary of steps.</p>\n<p>Instead \"officials will talk in general straw-poll terms on what principles ought to apply,\" said Lou Crandall, chief economist at Wrightson ICAP.</p>\n<p>It won't be the Fed having a structured debate on a set of options game-planned by the staff. That might happen in July, but not now.</p>\n<p>To downplay the significance, the Fed won't say anything about the \"talks about tapering\" in its formal statement, later Wednesday afternoon, O'Sullivan said.</p>\n<p>Secondly, the Fed's dot-plot, or interest rate forecast chart, may show a shift forward for the first rate hike to come during 2023. At the moment, the Fed shows no rate hikes until 2024 at the earliest.</p>\n<p>At its March meeting, seven out of 18 Fed officials saw a hike before the end of 2023, and it could be nine or ten officials at the June meeting next week.</p>\n<p>Thirdly, the Fed will have to raise its forecast for inflation for this year. In March, the Fed penciled in a 2.2% core rate for the personal consumption expenditure index. While that may rise, the Fed won't move the core rate for 2022 much higher, a signal that it still believes the price gains seen in the last few months reflects \"largely transitory\" factors.</p>\n<p>During press conferences, Powell has said the economy is \"a long way\" from the Fed's goals and it would take \"some time\" for substantial further progress to be achieved.</p>\n<p>\"I wouldn't pound the table and say exactly what Powell is going to say but it is time to start getting away from that language,\" O'Sullivan of TD Securities said.</p>\n<p>At the same time, the Fed has got to say that while the economy has made progress, they still need to see a lot more,\" he added.</p>\n<p>When the Fed added the \"substantial further progress\" guideline, the economy was 9.8 million jobs short of its level in February 2020. While it may be tempting, it is too soon to add Federal Reserve policymakers to that list.</p>\n<p>Much will be made next week out of some potentially \"hawkish\" sounds from the U.S. central bank's policy meeting, economists said, while they stressed that Fed Chairman Jerome Powell and the majority of the voting members of the interest rate setting committee remain \"doves\" and fundamentally will be sticking to their \"patient\" stance on monetary policy.</p>\n<p>\"They are going to be a little bit less dovish than last time,\" said Jim O'Sullivan, chief U.S. macro strategist for TD Securities.</p>\n<p>U.S. inflation has been sizzling in recent months.</p>\n<p>But the recent decline in long-term Treasury yields allows the Fed to lean into the hawkish message, O'Sullivan said.</p>\n<p>While inflation has been surprisingly hot, the Fed \"is willing to wait\" until the fall to see how the labor market responds to the inflation spike, said Ian Shepherdson, chief economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics. Wage pressures play a key role in determining the inflation outlook.</p>\n<p>\"We don't know how many people will come back into the labor market, how participation will rise, and will it be enough to dampen inflationary pressures,\" Shepherdson said.</p>\n<p>\"In the olden days, the Fed would have raised interest rates first and worried about what was going to happen afterwards. But this is a different Fed with a different strategy and a different approach,\" he said.</p>\n<p>The Fed is buying $80 billion of Treasurys and $40 billion of mortgage backed securities each month, along with keeping its benchmark interest rate close to zero, to support the economy.</p>\n<p>The central bank put itself in a bit of a box in December by guiding markets that it wouldn't slow down the pace of purchases until there had been \"substantial further progress\" in its goals of full employment and stable inflation.</p>\n<p>What will be the hawkish sounds?</p>\n<p>First, the Fed will give in to the reality that talking about tapering the size of its asset purchases makes sense. This is an important shift. Since December, Powell has managed to hold off such talk.</p>\n<p>But this is only the most preliminary of steps.</p>\n<p>Instead \"officials will talk in general straw-poll terms on what principles ought to apply,\" said Lou Crandall, chief economist at Wrightson ICAP.</p>\n<p>It won't be the Fed having a structured debate on a set of options game-planned by the staff. That might happen in July, but not now.</p>\n<p>To downplay the significance, the Fed won't say anything about the \"talks about tapering\" in its formal statement, later Wednesday afternoon, O'Sullivan said.</p>\n<p>Secondly, the Fed's dot-plot, or interest rate forecast chart, may show a shift forward for the first rate hike to come during 2023. At the moment, the Fed shows no rate hikes until 2024 at the earliest.</p>\n<p>At its March meeting, seven out of 18 Fed officials saw a hike before the end of 2023, and it could be nine or ten officials at the June meeting next week.</p>\n<p>Thirdly, the Fed will have to raise its forecast for inflation for this year. In March, the Fed penciled in a 2.2% core rate for the personal consumption expenditure index. That's according to the China Passenger Car Association.</p><p>In May, Tesla exported 11,527 vehicles from China. Tesla's local sales surged 88% vs. April to 21,936.</p><p>April's shipments declined 27% from March, but excluding 14,174 vehicles that were shipped to Europe, domestic sales was actually 67% month over month. Prior reports excluded Tesla exports.</p><p>The May sales rebound in China follows weeks of state media coverage regarding customer complaints and increased government oversight. Last week, a report said that Tesla orders nearly halved in May. But Tesla orders from last month may not be filled until this summer.</p><p>\"Tesla appears to have handled the shaky China PR issues and turbulence well as demand rebounded well ahead of expectations,\" said Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives in a note to clients Tuesday.</p><p><b>China EV Sales Strong</b></p><p>Meanwhile, Tesla's China-based rivals reportedstrong May saleslast week.&nbsp;<b>Nio</b>(NIO) deliveries rose 95% to 6,711 electric SUVs in May. But month-over-month deliveries fell about 6%.</p><p><b>Xpeng</b>(XPEV) deliveries leapt 483% year over year to 5,686 EVs in May, and 10% from April.&nbsp;<b>Li Auto</b>(LI) reported&nbsp;May deliveries of 4,323, up 101% from the same period last year, but down 22% from April.</p><p>China's new electric vehicle sales, which include EVs, hybrids and fuel cell vehicles, surged 177% to 185,000 cars in May from a year earlier, CPCA said. EV sales alone leapt 186% to 162,000.</p><p>Overall passenger vehicle&nbsp;sales, however, rose just 1.1% to 1.66 million cars.</p><p>Despite a recent rough patch that includes Autopilot safety concerns and the chip shortage, Ives is confident in Tesla's long-term ability to lead in the region.</p><p>\"Only 5% of auto sales in China are EV driven today, and we believe this transformational consumer demand will see a doubling of EV deliveries in this key region over the next two years with Tesla a major beneficiary along with domestic pure plays NIO, Xpeng, Li Auto and others,\" he said.</p><p>Ives has an outperform rating on Tesla stock and a price target of 1,000.</p><p><b>Tesla Stock</b></p><p>Shares rose 0.9% to 610.66 on thestock market today. Tesla stock has regained support at the 200-day line. It is still below its 50-day line,MarketSmithchart analysis shows. Its&nbsp;relative strength lineis rebounding.</p><p>Nio stock advanced 1.4% Tuesday. Xpeng stock rose 4and Li Auto climbed 8.3%.</p><p>China accounts for 30% of Tesla's sales. It is the second-largest market for the EV maker, behind the U.S.</p><p>Beijing officials warmly welcomed Tesla early on, as it facilitated the opening of its Giga Shanghai plant in 2019. But recent consumer complaints about Tesla vehicle safety and the company's response to criticisms have irked Chinese officials. The strained relationship has resulted in bad PR for the U.S.-based electric carmaker.</p><p>Global chip and battery shortages have also stymied Tesla's growth plans. Most recently, the companyscrapped plans to make a Plaid Plusversion of its luxury Model S vehicle. While CEO Elon Musk tweeted the decision was made because the Plaid was \"good enough,\" some industry observers have said the reversal could be due to battery supply issues.</p><p>The Plaid Plus, along with the Cybertruck, Tesla Semi and some future Model Y vehicles, were all slated to use 4680 battery cells, which are supposed to offer a big advance in range and cost. But month-over-month deliveries fell about 6%.</p><p><b>Xpeng</b>(XPEV) deliveries leapt 483% year over year to 5,686 EVs in May, and 10% from April.&nbsp;<b>Li Auto</b>(LI) reported&nbsp;May deliveries of 4,323, up 101% from the same period last year, but down 22% from April.</p><p>China's new electric vehicle sales, which include EVs, hybrids and fuel cell vehicles, surged 177% to 185,000 cars in May from a year earlier, CPCA said. EV sales alone leapt 186% to 162,000.</p><p>Overall passenger vehicle&nbsp;sales, however, rose just 1.1% to 1.66 million cars.</p><p>Despite a recent rough patch that includes Autopilot safety concerns and the chip shortage, Ives is confident in Tesla's long-term ability to lead in the region.</p><p>\"Only 5% of auto sales in China are EV driven today, and we believe this transformational consumer demand will see a doubling of EV deliveries in this key region over the next two years with Tesla a major beneficiary along with domestic pure plays NIO, Xpeng, Li Auto and others,\" he said.</p><p>Ives has an outperform rating on Tesla stock and a price target of 1,000.</p><p><b>Tesla Stock</b></p><p>Shares rose 0.9% to 610.66 on thestock market today. Tesla stock has regained support at the 200-day line. It is still below its 50-day line,MarketSmithchart analysis shows. Its&nbsp;relative strength lineis rebounding.</p><p>Nio stock advanced 1.4% Tuesday. Xpeng stock rose 4and Li Auto climbed 8.3%.</p><p>China accounts for 30% of Tesla's sales. It is the second-largest market for the EV maker, behind the U.S.</p><p>Beijing officials warmly welcomed Tesla early on, as it facilitated the opening of its Giga Shanghai plant in 2019. But recent consumer complaints about Tesla vehicle safety and the company's response to criticisms have irked Chinese officials. The strained relationship has resulted in bad PR for the U.S.-based electric carmaker.</p><p>Global chip and battery shortages have also stymied Tesla's growth plans. Most recently, the companyscrapped plans to make a Plaid Plusversion of its luxury Model S vehicle. While CEO Elon Musk tweeted the decision was made because the Plaid was \"good enough,\" some industry observers have said the reversal could be due to battery supply issues.</p><p>The Plaid Plus, along with the Cybertruck, Tesla Semi and some future Model Y vehicles, were all slated to use 4680 battery cells, which are supposed to offer a big advance in range and cost. But Tesla has said mass production of the 4680 battery cells may not occur until well into 2022.</p><p>Meanwhile, long-term executive Jerome Guillen has stepped down, Tesla announced late Monday.
