First 3 months has been well with the AI hype. One of the best 3 months in a long time. Made quite a bit and was actually quite surprised by it. Cash flow has been looking not too bad but still 80% invested in equities. If the feds decides to cut rate, the remaining 20% will be invested into the markets.

BTC to at least 60k in the near future

With the outflows from the Bitcoin ETF continuing piling on the selling pressure, we should see a downward trend in the price action in the near term. A drop to 59k to 60k range would see a price correction of around 20% from the all time high of 73k. This would also follows the trend of all the previous pre-halving price action of an average 20% correction before the halving takes place. ETF selling pressure could somehow end when bitcoin reach the 60k level before we sees a rebound of back to 68k where we will most likely consolidate until the halving happens.

Bitcoin could somewhat still move further down if we have further outflow from the ETFs. Currently we will be expecting a consolidation phase before the halving next month before we see it breaking the ATH again. I would reckon a drop back to 63k region is still a possibility in the short term.

my thesis about NIO Inc. I covered the stock in January, for the first time and my rating for the stock was &#34;Strong Sell&#34; because I saw several weaknesses in the business. Since my first coverage went live, the stock has declined by 29%. I reiterate my bearish thesis because NIO continues to lose its market share as closest peers ramp up much faster, and the race intensifies with new solid players joining the battle. The company continues to be disappointing from the bottom line perspective, which looks inevitable given NIO&#39;s thin, single-digit gross margin. Furthermore, the stock is still substantially overvalued, according to my valuation analysis.</p><h2 id=\"id_1498807830\">Fundamental analysis</h2><p>I want to start with the most fresh data, March and Q1 2024 deliveries. To provide readers with more value I am adding Q1 deliveries from NIO&#39;s closest peers in the Chinese market. These include Li Auto Inc. (LI), XPeng Inc. (XPEV). NIO was the only company out of three to record a YoY decline in Q1, which means the company is losing its market share to competitors. LI and XPEV not only outpaced NIO, but their growth numbers are impressive without any context. Li&#39;s success is especially impressive, delivering 80 thousand vehicles in Q1, a half of what NIO did for the full 2023.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/5a421dabd45b0dae70c20b5c597a2a39\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"122\"/></p><p>Compiled by the author</p><p>And the competition is intensifying further. Chinese consumer electronics giant, Xiaomi (OTCPK:XIACF), launched sales of its first electric vehicle (&#34;EV&#34;). It looks to me that Xiaomi&#39;s car is the direct competitor to NIO&#39;s ET7. Xiaomi&#39;s SU7 starts below $30,000 in China and it was sold out within the first 24 hours after official sales launched. To add context, NIO&#39;s ET7 sedan starts above $70,000 in China. It appears like ET7 will be unable to compete with SU7 in pricing, and I doubt whether NIO will be able to justify the massive gap in prices to customers. Therefore, I see the emergence of Xiaomi&#39;s car as a big threat to NIO.</p><p>I also want to highlight the latest earnings release. NIO delivered a consensus revenue beat on March 5, but disappointed in terms of the EPS. In my initial thesis, I emphasized warning trends in the company&#39;s profitability and NIO again disappointed from the bottom line perspective. The gross profit is still very thin at 7.5% in Q4 2023 and the operating margin is still volatile and far from zero. On a TTM basis the operating margin improvement is slow, I believe.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/d20fae8cae74251a699a10424de4ed36\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"439\"/></p><p>Data by YCharts</p><p>NIO&#39;s profitability looks not much worse than XPEV&#39;s. On the other hand, Li Auto is already profitable across all key profitability metrics, which puts this company in a better position compared to NIO. While NIO struggles to achieve even shallow profitability improvements, Li Auto is already profitable and generates spare cash to reinvest into business and innovation. Therefore, I expect the gap between Li Auto and NIO regarding vehicle deliveries to widen further.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/833256001931508474d71bd161ba750a\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"344\"/></p><p>NIO&#39;s balance sheet is robust with $7 billion in cash. However, the company continues to burn through hundreds of millions of USD in cash each quarter. As a result, I am uncertain about how long the company&#39;s financial strength will last.</p><p>Losing the market share to close peers, intensifying competition, and ongoing cash burn appears to be a very weak fundamental combination. Therefore, I remain bearish about NIO&#39;s future prospects.</p><h2 id=\"id_635281419\">Valuation analysis</h2><p>I use the discounted cash flow (&#34;DCF&#34;) approach to update my NIO valuation analysis. I use an 11.5% WACC, as recommended by Finbox. I rely on the FY 2024 revenue consensus forecast of $9.74 billion and use a linear 17.15% CAGR for 2025-2028.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/7f1be4be993374a0584e4f03ada108b8\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"211\"/></p><p>NIO is still not profitable and the level of uncertainty regarding the free cash flow margin is very high. However, Tesla (TSLA) first achieved sustainable positive FCF starting in FY 2019 when it had already surpassed $20 billion in revenue. Therefore, I assume that to generate at least 1% in FCF, the company must surpass $15 billion in revenue. Therefore, I expect NIO to start generating positive FCF no earlier than FY 2027, with a slow expansion. According to Seeking Alpha, there are 2.08 billion outstanding NIO shares at the moment. I project a 4% constant growth rate because NIO operates in an industry that enjoys solid positive secular transitions.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/fe14c83d9d6453759b6cc9578794ffce\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"304\"/></p><p>Calculated by the author</p><p>The fair share price of NIO is $1.57, according to my calculations above. This is substantially lower than the current share price, meaning there is still vast room to drop for NIO.</p><h2 id=\"id_1983469076\">Mitigating factors</h2><p>Since stock markets tend to grow over the long term, being bearish is inherently risky. NIO is losing competition, and its profitability dynamic is disappointing, but it does not mean that it is guaranteed that the unfavorable dynamic will last infinitely. The company might appoint new managers, which might come up with a promising turnaround plan to improve the situation. Or there is a possibility that a giant like BYD (OTCPK:BYDDY), which is not yet present in the premium segment, might decide to acquire NIO in order to expand into more high-end markets. Both these possible scenarios might lead to a solid share price boost and will likely work against my bearish thesis.</p><p>The stock is very volatile with a very wide 52-week range from $4.38 to $16.18. The stock is currently at all-time lows and a technical (not due to fundamental reasons) rebound might occur. I mean that the current all-time lows might prompt traders to buy the dip, leading to a short-term increase in price. Moreover, the short interest in NIO is substantial, which also might be a potential positive catalyst for the stock if short coverage occurs. Therefore, there is a probability that the stock might demonstrate a short-term spike before it goes down further closer to my fair value estimates.</p><h2 id=\"id_2028627029\">Conclusion</h2><p>I think that NIO is still a &#34;Strong Sell&#34; considering its soft performance compared to LI and XPEV and the intensifying competition with Xiaomi, which offers a competing model that is two times cheaper than NIO. Deeply unprofitable business means that NIO does not have many options to start pricing wars or seek new costly product developments. I covered the stock in January, for the first time and my rating for the stock was \"Strong Sell\" because I saw several weaknesses in the business. Since my first coverage went live, the stock has declined by 29%. I reiterate my bearish thesis because NIO continues to lose its market share as closest peers ramp up much faster, and the race intensifies with new solid players joining the battle. The company continues to be disappointing from the bottom line perspective, which looks inevitable given NIO's thin, single-digit gross margin. Furthermore, the stock is still substantially overvalued, according to my valuation analysis.Fundamental analysisI want to start with the most fresh data, March and Q1 2024 deliveries. To provide readers with more value I am adding Q1 deliveries from NIO's closest peers in the Chinese market. These include Li Auto Inc. (LI), XPeng Inc. (XPEV). NIO was the only company out of three to record a YoY decline in Q1, which means the company is losing its market share to competitors. LI and XPEV not only outpaced NIO, but their growth numbers are impressive without any context. Li's success is especially impressive, delivering 80 thousand vehicles in Q1, a half of what NIO did for the full 2023.Compiled by the authorAnd the competition is intensifying further. Chinese consumer electronics giant, Xiaomi (OTCPK:XIACF), launched sales of its first electric vehicle (\"EV\"). It looks to me that Xiaomi's car is the direct competitor to NIO's ET7. Xiaomi's SU7 starts below $30,000 in China and it was sold out within the first 24 hours after official sales launched. To add context, NIO's ET7 sedan starts above $70,000 in China. It appears like ET7 will be unable to compete with SU7 in pricing, and I doubt whether NIO will be able to justify the massive gap in prices to customers. Therefore, I see the emergence of Xiaomi's car as a big threat to NIO.I also want to highlight the latest earnings release. NIO delivered a consensus revenue beat on March 5, but disappointed in terms of the EPS. In my initial thesis, I emphasized warning trends in the company's profitability and NIO again disappointed from the bottom line perspective. The gross profit is still very thin at 7.5% in Q4 2023 and the operating margin is still volatile and far from zero. On a TTM basis the operating margin improvement is slow, I believe.Data by YChartsNIO's profitability looks not much worse than XPEV's. On the other hand, Li Auto is already profitable across all key profitability metrics, which puts this company in a better position compared to NIO. While NIO struggles to achieve even shallow profitability improvements, Li Auto is already profitable and generates spare cash to reinvest into business and innovation. Therefore, I expect the gap between Li Auto and NIO regarding vehicle deliveries to widen further.NIO's balance sheet is robust with $7 billion in cash. However, the company continues to burn through hundreds of millions of USD in cash each quarter. As a result, I am uncertain about how long the company's financial strength will last.Losing the market share to close peers, intensifying competition, and ongoing cash burn appears to be a very weak fundamental combination. Therefore, I remain bearish about NIO's future prospects.Valuation analysisI use the discounted cash flow (\"DCF\") approach to update my NIO valuation analysis. I use an 11.5% WACC, as recommended by Finbox. I rely on the FY 2024 revenue consensus forecast of $9.74 billion and use a linear 17.15% CAGR for 2025-2028.NIO is still not profitable and the level of uncertainty regarding the free cash flow margin is very high. However, Tesla (TSLA) first achieved sustainable positive FCF starting in FY 2019 when it had already surpassed $20 billion in revenue. Therefore, I assume that to generate at least 1% in FCF, the company must surpass $15 billion in revenue. Therefore, I expect NIO to start generating positive FCF no earlier than FY 2027, with a slow expansion. According to Seeking Alpha, there are 2.08 billion outstanding NIO shares at the moment. I project a 4% constant growth rate because NIO operates in an industry that enjoys solid positive secular transitions.Calculated by the authorThe fair share price of NIO is $1.57, according to my calculations above. This is substantially lower than the current share price, meaning there is still vast room to drop for NIO.Mitigating factorsSince stock markets tend to grow over the long term, being bearish is inherently risky. NIO is losing competition, and its profitability dynamic is disappointing, but it does not mean that it is guaranteed that the unfavorable dynamic will last infinitely. The company might appoint new managers, which might come up with a promising turnaround plan to improve the situation. Or there is a possibility that a giant like BYD (OTCPK:BYDDY), which is not yet present in the premium segment, might decide to acquire NIO in order to expand into more high-end markets. Both these possible scenarios might lead to a solid share price boost and will likely work against my bearish thesis.The stock is very volatile with a very wide 52-week range from $4.38 to $16.18. The stock is currently at all-time lows and a technical (not due to fundamental reasons) rebound might occur. I mean that the current all-time lows might prompt traders to buy the dip, leading to a short-term increase in price. Moreover, the short interest in NIO is substantial, which also might be a potential positive catalyst for the stock if short coverage occurs. Therefore, there is a probability that the stock might demonstrate a short-term spike before it goes down further closer to my fair value estimates.ConclusionI think that NIO is still a \"Strong Sell\" considering its soft performance compared to LI and XPEV and the intensifying competition with Xiaomi, which offers a competing model that is two times cheaper than NIO. Deeply unprofitable business means that NIO does not have many options to start pricing wars or seek new costly product developments. While delivery growth was positive, NIO&#39;s rivals executed once again much better than NIO and displayed much stronger delivery growth.</p><p>NIOdelivered7,024 electric vehicles in May, showing just 4.7% year over year growth. NIO delivered 2,936 ES6s, 1,635 EC6s and 746 ES8s, all of which are sport utility vehicles. Additionally, NIO delivered 1,707 ET7s, the company&#39;s new sedan model for which deliveries started only in March. In April, NIO delivered 1,878 ES6s and 693 ET7s, meaning delivery rates have ramped up 56.3% and 146.3% month over month. NIO&#39;s ET7 sedan deliveries now already exceed those of the EC6 which has seen deliveries commence in September 2020.</p><p>NIO&#39;s ES6 is NIO&#39;s best-selling electric vehicle product and it has been responsible for 40% of deliveries lately. Because NIO has now moved into the sedan market with its flagship ET7 electric vehicle and customer demand is strong, I expect sedan sales to account for an increasingly large revenue share going forward. Based on May delivery volumes, NIO&#39;s sedans accounted for a delivery share of 24.3% which is impressive considering that NIO started sedan deliveries only a little more than two months ago. The sedan share of deliveries was just 13.7% in April. Longer term, I see NIO growing its delivery share of sedan models to 40-50%, with the company&#39;s ET5 product launch later this year potentially accelerating this shift.</p><p><b>NIO&#39;s delivery card for May compared against rivals</b></p><p>NIO being outclassed by its rivals regarding delivery growth is a concerning problem and it could potentially result in shares of NIO underperforming its rivals going forward. Investors tend to purchase shares of those electric vehicle companies with the most attractive short term delivery prospects, and like I argued about a month ago, these companies are now XPeng (XPEV) and Li Auto (LI), but not NIO.</p><p>XPeng was the only electric vehicle company of the Top Three -- NIO, XPeng and Li Auto -- that had positive delivery growth in April while NIO and Li Auto saw their delivery growth rates go negative. In May, this picture improved, but chiefly for XPeng and Li Auto. While XPeng once again delivered impressive year over year delivery growth of 78.0% in May, Li Auto saw its deliveries soar 165.9% due to decreased production constraints.</p><p>NIO, unfortunately, delivered only about two thousand electric vehicles more than in the previous month, which calculates to a depressingly low delivery growth rate of 4.7% year over year. With the exception of Li Auto, XPeng and NIO&#39;s May deliveries were below those of March, the month in which production roared back after Chinese holidays earlier this year.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/76f822e940b97a7dc35bf1be2ec5ee01\" tg-width=\"618\" tg-height=\"208\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><b>Lowering production and delivery outlook for FY 2022 (again)</b></p><p>Calculating delivery estimates for companies like NIO which go through a volatile production ramp of different models at the same time is not an easy task. Just last month, I lowered my estimate for NIO&#39;s delivery possibilities in FY 2022 due to COVID-19 factory lockdowns that limited the availability of automotive parts and forced manufacturers to curtail production.</p><p>My previous estimate called for 140 thousand electric vehicle deliveries. Given the worrisome slowdown in NIO&#39;s delivery growth in May, there is no way the electric vehicle company can achieve anything near 140 thousand in deliveries. NIO delivered just 37,866 electric vehicles year to date which calculates to a 27% share of my previous FY 2022 delivery target.</p><p>Even when making generous assumptions about the current ET7 ramp and the estimated ET5 production start in September 2022, the April and May delivery cards have shown that NIO will likely deliver materially less than 140 thousand EVs this year. Due to continual supply chain issues and part shortages that are more severe than initially expected, I now expect NIO to deliver only 115-120 thousand electric vehicles, implying a 14-18% decline compared to my previous prediction.</p><p><b>Risks to refreshed FY 2022 delivery guidance</b></p><p>NIO doesn&#39;t give delivery guidance for the full year, and there are a lot of good reasons for that. Many variables affect delivery ramps that are outside of a manufacturer&#39;s control, so any guidance that goes just beyond the next quarter represents an unwarranted risk and subjects the stock to volatility. NIO will submit its first-quarter earnings card next week and delivery estimates for Q2&#39;22 are likely to be weak. Given a deteriorating delivery outlook, I believe shares of NIO will have a hard time moving higher, especially if NIO&#39;s Q2&#39;22 delivery guidance disappoints next week. For example, the company has to contend with supply-chain constraints and the challenge of sourcing lithium for EV batteries. On the other hand, an arrangement with a lithium producer may provide an advantage for Nio. That said, it’s too early to declare victory and load up on NIO stock.</p><p>Overeager EV-market investors have to face the facts. The industry has its growing pains, and it’s not always going to be a smooth ride. For instance, Britain-based research indicates that EV charge points are actually almost as expensive as gasoline.</p><p>Meanwhile, EV makers in China have their own problems to deal with. Covid-19 lockdowns made already acute supply-chain issues even worse. Don’t misunderstand — Nio is a promising company in the global EV space. It’s just that the situation is too problematic to recommend making an investment now.</p><h2>What’s Happening With NIO Stock?</h2><p>2022 hasn’t been a great year for EV stocks generally. However, NIO stock has been particularly brutal, sliding from $33 in January to $15 and change by the end of September.</p><p>The primary culprits, along with Covid-19 lockdowns, are supply-chain delays and the rising prices of EV batteries. These factors have increased costs for China-based EV manufacturers like Nio.</p><p>A <i>Wall Street Journal</i> article described the Chinese EV market as “cutthroat” but also as “lucrative.” Industry-favorable policies in China include tax breaks and cash subsidies.</p><p>These policies have boosted the nation’s EV use, to the point where in August, “nearly 30% of all passenger cars sold used new energy” in China. This bodes well for Nio, but sourcing lithium remains a challenge for all of China’s EV makers.</p><h2>A Deal With a Lithium Producer Might Help Nio</h2><p>This isn’t to suggest that the situation is hopeless. NIO stock has fallen nearly 37% this year, and is more than 60% below its all-time high of $61.95 reached in January of last year.</p><p><b>Nio Mauled by Grizzly Research</b></p><p>In a scathing report issued on June 28, Grizzly Research accused Nio of cooking its books to continually beat Wall Street forecasts for its earnings and sales. Specifically, Grizzly Research claims that Nio uses affiliate Wuhan Weineng to juice its numbers.</p><p>Nio famously runs a battery-as-a-service (BaaS) program where consumers who purchase Nio vehicles pay a subscription fee to swap depleted batteries for fresh ones rather than shell out big bucks for at-home battery charging infrastructure. However, it is Wuhan Weineng, not Nio, that rents the batteries to Nio vehicle owners. Nio sells the needed batteries to Wuhan Weineng and records the sales as revenue.</p><p>Following an investigation, Grizzly Research alleges that Nio deliberately oversupplies battery packs to Wuhan Weineng to inflate its revenue figures. Based on Wuhan Weineng’s inventory levels, the short-seller estimates that Nio oversupplied more than 21,000 batteries to Wuhan Weineng last year, and that the oversupply boosted Nio’s revenue by 10% and understated its net loss by half. This is a major allegation, but not implausible given that Nio reported revenue growth of 122% and a 24% drop in its net loss for full year 2021.</p><p>Grizzly Research also questions why Nio immediately recognizes revenue from the sale of batteries to Wuhan Weineng rather than spreading the sales out over the seven year subscription period.</p><p>Nio immediately fired back at Grizzly Research, saying that the report contains “numerous errors, unsupported speculations, and misleading conclusions.” The electric vehicle maker also said that it will make relevant disclosures as required by market watchdogs in the U.S., Hong Kong and Singapore, where its stock trades. But so far, Nio has not put forward any disclosures and its stock fell more than 10% on the day the Grizzly Research report was made public.</p><p><b>From Bad to Worse</b></p><p>The short-seller report is just the latest body blow to NIO stock. It also isn’t the only accounting issue the company has run into this year. In early May, Nio’s share price fell 15% in one day after the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) announced that it is investigating an accounting issue at the Chinese company. Add in all the other problems facing the company, and the fact that its stock is more than 65% below its all-time high, and there’s no good reason for investors to take a position in Nio.</p><p>In time, things may improve for the electric vehicle maker.
