The forgotten tech IPO of 2018 saw its share price deteriorate quickly after reporting decelerating revenue growth and stiff competition from Big-Tech firms such as Amazon(NASDAQ:AMZN), Google(NASDAQ:GOOG)(NASDAQ:GOOGL), and Microsoft(NASDAQ:MSFT). While some growth investors may have written the stock off, its given valuation in today's market frenzy around technology companies simply cannot be ignored.
\n
The cloud storage platform offers file synchronization, infrastructure modernization, and workflow optimization to enhance team collaboration and innovates its ecosystem to continue competing in a gigantic (and growing) market. That said, the company continues to deliver growth in all relevant metrics, but most importantly, is quickly improving its profitability. Dropbox is turning into a free cash flow machine with long-term targets of reaching $1 billion in free cash flow. Moreover, considering its market cap of just $10.6 billion and a competitive position in the ever-growing cloud market, Dropbox may be on the radar for an acquisition, which would cause its share price to surge.
\n
Still Growing
\n
Dropbox shares fell roughly 4% after the company reported a $345 million loss in its fourth-quarter earnings due to a one-time $400 million real-estate charge as it fully transitioned to remote work. However, excluding the charge, Dropbox actually beat both earnings and revenue estimates. Here, the company reported revenue of $504 million, up by 13% year-over-year. Total average recurring revenue (ARR) grew by 12% to $2.022 billion, while total revenue for the year increased by 15% to $1.91 billion.
\n
Excluding the impairment charges, Dropbox posted a Non-GAPP Income of $391 million, compared to $207 million in 2019. Gross margins further improved by 3% year-over, reaching 78.3%.
\n
\n 2020 was a transformational year for Dropbox and I’m proud of the team for their resilience and focus in addressing our customers’ evolving needsl said Dropbox. While this may be a slowdown from the year prior, when it added 1.6 million users, it is nowhere near saturation yet.
\n
Dropbox also continues to grow its average revenue per user, from $123 to $128.5. Even if Dropbox were to stop growing its user figures, it can still grow revenues by monetizing its existing user base. That said, ARR increased by $200 million, compared to an addition of $300 million in the year prior. That said, Dropbox is trading at a forward P/E of just 20.6x, significantly lower than the Internet - Services industry's average P/E of 31.94x. Dropbox is also a free cash flow machine, with long-term targets of generating $1 billion in annual free cash flow. I believe this target may realistically be achievable, considering it reached nearly $500 million in free cash flow this year.
\n
Analysts expect Dropbox's revenue to reach $2.75 billion by 2025 and annual net income of around $900 million. This would translate into a P/E of just 12x, assuming the share price stays at current levels. To make sure this won't be the case, the company will help investors out a little bit through a $1 billion stock repurchase program.
\n
It is also likely that Dropbox's current valuation has raised awareness of other tech companies interested in a strategic acquisition to gain market share in a competitive industry. Dominating Tech companies such as Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook(NASDAQ:FB), Google, etc., can easily afford to acquire Dropbox, which would cause its shares to surge. Management is probably well aware that Dropbox is currently at least 30% undervalued, so a potential acquisition would likely not occur at under $20 per share. For now, Dropbox continues to invest in growth, making strategic acquisitions including HelloSign and DocSend in order to build an end-to-end platform. DocSend has amassed over 17,000 businesses since its inception in 2013 and allows businesses to have one destination to manage the entire lifecycle of a document.
\n
On the other hand, the $240 million acquisition of e-signature HelloSign also allows businesses to develop and securely sign contracts while keeping the entire workflow in the Dropbox ecosystem without having to switch. These tools further add stickiness to its platform, which leads to greater customer dependence, raising Dropbox's pricing power.
\n
It is also worth mentioning that Dropbox has beaten both revenue and earnings estimates in the last four quarters, meaning that it may outperform the given analyst predictions in the future. If Dropbox achieves to accelerate its revenue growth again, due to its acquisitions and extensive marketing efforts, its given valuation would skyrocket. At this point, it would be reevaluated as a growth stock and measured on a P/S basis. Although this scenario is rather unlikely, it is certainly possible due to cyclical shifts in trends in software platforms. Even in the more likely scenario of continuous decelerating growth rates, Dropbox has massive upside potential.
\n
Takeaways
\n
There is not much more to say; Dropbox remains substantially undervalued with significant upside potential in the long-term and may be on the radar for a possible acquisition. Dropbox continues to invest in its platform by making strategic acquisitions to improve its ecosystem in a massive addressable market that is expected to reach $250 billion by 2027, due to the adaptation of remote work. Dropbox has been feeling the effects of increased competition, losing market share to larger competitors, but is still growing its user base, which is reflected in double-digit revenue growth that is set to last at least until 2022. Most importantly, the company remains extremely attractively valued at just 20x forward earnings, so long-term investors might be rewarded.
\n
Undervalued Growth Launching
\n
Thanks for reading! But the outlook for the U.S. economy is the cloudiest I have seen in 30 years.
\n
I’m shocked at how binary the two most likely outcomes are right now, with impending doom on the one hand and impending boom on the other.
\n
Just this week, the Centers for Disease Control released a travel advisory warning against all travel to Canada. This warning includes people who are already vaccinated because of the high risk of COVID-19 variants. Now add in the challenges of getting vaccines to people in poorer or less developed countries and you can see that we might not be in the final innings of the pandemic.
\n
In addition to the risks presented by the pandemic, I am beginning to think that something that has been previously brushed off by the market — say, inflation fears, oversupply of new issues through SPACs or an unexpected event such as a hedge fund blowing up — could trigger a market selloff in the near future.
\n
If you missed it, a multibillion-dollar hedge fund (a “family office,” legally) named Archegos Capital imploded two weeks ago when its levered-up portfolio faced margin calls from prime brokers. Through a series of private contracts between Archegos and banks such as Credit Suisse and Nomura, Archegos was able to synthetically hold large unreported positions in companies including ViacomCBS Inc.,Discovery Inc.,Baidu Inc.,Tencent Holdings Ltd. and Farfetch Ltd. with up to five-to-one leverage. When the banks began to liquidate Archegos’ positions in these companies, the stocks crashed. Viacom went from over $100 a share down to the $40s in only four days. Obviously this is not some penny stock collapsing; this is a real multibillion dollar company that got cut in half by one fund.
\n
Early warning?
\n
Is this an isolated event by a reckless investment fund manager or something that has become commonplace? Remember back to the housing crash that started the Great Recession. Shady mortgage derivatives were not a big deal until they became a Big Deal. Are popular stocks today being propped up by a bunch of billion-dollar hedge funds through off-balance sheet equity swap contracts? I don’t know the answer and am losing some of sleep over it. This is a good signal that it might be a good time to take risk off the table and trim some of the big winners that we have had — and maybe even sell some of the ones that are underperforming.
\n
This is not a call to go out and sell everything. Take a look at your portfolio and evaluate how much risk you have. Have you neglected to trim some of our huge winners? Are you over-invested in the Space Revolution? Do you have a large position in a company that causes you to lose sleep? If the answer to any of the those questions is yes, then it is probably a good time to take a little off today.
\n
With all of that said, I could be wrong. This bubble-blowing bull market might rage on for three more years without looking back. But this is where investing for the next 10,000 days requires us to take a look at the risk/reward of our current environment and make investment decisions based on that analysis. I feel the risk of 10%-20% downside is much higher than missing out on 10%-20% percent upside at this moment. And that is why I am trimming some today.
\n
Space stocks
\n
On a brighter note, I am still constantly researching everything that I consider Revolutionary. As you know, the Space Revolution has been one of my biggest focus areas. Some of you are down 10%-20% on some of our space holdings. We are early adopters and sometimes that is the price you pay to be early in a trend. My thesis hasn’t changed — the Space Revolution will become a trillion-dollar market in the next five to 10 years.
\n
The space economy is going to grow five to 10 times over the next five to 10 years, and I am obsessed with trying to find the best companies for us to invest in. The problem with trying to invest in the space industry right now is that it’s still at least a year or two before it goes mainstream. A lot of the space companies that have come public in the first quarter are questionable, and space stocks have been underperforming so far this year.
\n
I like to wait for the opportunity to load up on my favorite long-term Revolutionary stocks when the markets are ignoring them. But the outlook for the U.S. economy is the cloudiest I have seen in 30 years.\nI’m shocked at how binary the two most likely outcomes are right now, with impending doom on the one hand and impending boom on the other.\nJust this week, the Centers for Disease Control released a travel advisory warning against all travel to Canada. This warning includes people who are already vaccinated because of the high risk of COVID-19 variants. Now add in the challenges of getting vaccines to people in poorer or less developed countries and you can see that we might not be in the final innings of the pandemic.\nIn addition to the risks presented by the pandemic, I am beginning to think that something that has been previously brushed off by the market — say, inflation fears, oversupply of new issues through SPACs or an unexpected event such as a hedge fund blowing up — could trigger a market selloff in the near future.\nIf you missed it, a multibillion-dollar hedge fund (a “family office,” legally) named Archegos Capital imploded two weeks ago when its levered-up portfolio faced margin calls from prime brokers. Obviously this is not some penny stock collapsing; this is a real multibillion dollar company that got cut in half by one fund.\nEarly warning?\nIs this an isolated event by a reckless investment fund manager or something that has become commonplace? Remember back to the housing crash that started the Great Recession. Shady mortgage derivatives were not a big deal until they became a Big Deal. Are popular stocks today being propped up by a bunch of billion-dollar hedge funds through off-balance sheet equity swap contracts? I don’t know the answer and am losing some of sleep over it. This is a good signal that it might be a good time to take risk off the table and trim some of the big winners that we have had — and maybe even sell some of the ones that are underperforming.\nThis is not a call to go out and sell everything. Take a look at your portfolio and evaluate how much risk you have. Have you neglected to trim some of our huge winners? Are you over-invested in the Space Revolution? Do you have a large position in a company that causes you to lose sleep? If the answer to any of the those questions is yes, then it is probably a good time to take a little off today.\nWith all of that said, I could be wrong. And that is why I am trimming some today.\nSpace stocks\nOn a brighter note, I am still constantly researching everything that I consider Revolutionary. As you know, the Space Revolution has been one of my biggest focus areas. Some of you are down 10%-20% on some of our space holdings. We are early adopters and sometimes that is the price you pay to be early in a trend. My thesis hasn’t changed — the Space Revolution will become a trillion-dollar market in the next five to 10 years.\nThe space economy is going to grow five to 10 times over the next five to 10 years, and I am obsessed with trying to find the best companies for us to invest in. The problem with trying to invest in the space industry right now is that it’s still at least a year or two before it goes mainstream. A lot of the space companies that have come public in the first quarter are questionable, and space stocks have been underperforming so far this year.\nI like to wait for the opportunity to load up on my favorite long-term Revolutionary stocks when the markets are ignoring them. Investing in space at this early stage — call it the top half of the first inning of the Space Revolution — is obviously riskier than shares of companies that already have long-term cash flow. But the upside potential probably more than makes up for that risk, as long as you are careful as the Space Revolution develops.\nCheck out this webcast that I watched this week that features a few of the CEOs of our space stocks. It is informative, although I did not like the performance of some of the CEOs on the panel.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":56,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":371944199,"gmtCreate":1618906592911,"gmtModify":1704716661441,"author":{"id":"3574913405835493","authorId":"3574913405835493","name":"Zenpest","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6475887fabae09f3a06ab492c653a61e","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3574913405835493","authorIdStr":"3574913405835493"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Sundial Growers Inc.(SNDL)$$4.20","listText":"$Sundial Growers Inc.(SNDL)$$4.20","text":"$Sundial Growers Inc.(SNDL)$$4.20","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f3d303b49de9e8f0ad39183d1fee05d5","width":"1440","height":"2560"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":7,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/371944199","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":226,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":101156498,"gmtCreate":1619866550114,"gmtModify":1704335888213,"author":{"id":"3574913405835493","authorId":"3574913405835493","name":"Zenpest","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6475887fabae09f3a06ab492c653a61e","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3574913405835493","authorIdStr":"3574913405835493"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$NIO Inc.(NIO)$buy?","listText":"$NIO Inc.(NIO)$buy?","text":"$NIO Inc.(NIO)$buy?","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a1940d36d0af0bbf49f7f52c73725f9f","width":"1440","height":"2560"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":6,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/101156498","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":147,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":342859195,"gmtCreate":1618201436317,"gmtModify":1704707440524,"author":{"id":"3574913405835493","authorId":"3574913405835493","name":"Zenpest","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6475887fabae09f3a06ab492c653a61e","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3574913405835493","authorIdStr":"3574913405835493"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"AMC and Tesla","listText":"AMC and Tesla","text":"AMC and Tesla","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/342859195","repostId":"2126005392","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2126005392","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Stock Market Quotes, Business News, Financial News, Trading Ideas, and Stock Research by Professionals","home_visible":0,"media_name":"Benzinga","id":"1052270027","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d08bf7808052c0ca9deb4e944cae32aa"},"pubTimestamp":1618200080,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2126005392?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-04-12 12:01","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Analysts Upgraded AMC, Snap, United Airlines And Tesla In The Past Week","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2126005392","media":"Benzinga","summary":"Amid last's week trading, analysts came out with new ratings for some widely-followed stocks.Analysts and brokerage firms often use ratings when they issue stock recommendations to stock traders.
Dropbox also reported strong free cash flow of $490 million, $100 million higher than in the year prior. Gross margins further improved by 3% year-over, reaching 78.3%.
\n
\n 2020 was a transformational year for Dropbox and I’m proud of the team for their resilience and focus in addressing our customers’ evolving needsl said Dropbox. We ended the year with strong margin expansion, free cash flow, and more than $2B in ARR as we continued to make progress toward our long-term financial targets. Going into 2021, we’re focused on executing against our strategy and building essential products for the new era of distributed work.” - Co-founder and Chief Executive OfficerDrew Houston\n
\n
Source: Dropbox IR
\n
The main bear thesis on Dropbox has been evolving around the lingering competition from large players such as Amazon, Google, Microsoft, etc., leading to stagnating user numbers. Although revenue growth continues to decelerate, the company is still experiencing a linear growth trajectory in all relevant metrics. Here, Dropbox continues to successfully convert paying users to premium plans, growing its paid user base by another 1.17 million YoY.
Looking at annual revenues, Dropbox added $250 million in high-margin revenue in 2020, just shy of the $270 million revenue addition during 2018-2019.
\n
Cheap Valuation
\n
Dropbox's valuation at current levels is a steal: At $26 per share, Dropbox trades at a 1-year forward price to sales of just 4.6, significantly lower than other SaaS stocks in the space. Here, Okta(NASDAQ:OKTA)and Twilio(NYSE:TWLO)trade at over 20 times Price to Sales, while Workday(NASDAQ:WDAY)has a 1-year forward P/S of 10. It is also cheaper than Salesforce(NYSE:CRM), which appears undervalued regarding its growth aspects.
\n
Data by YCharts
\n
Yes, Dropbox is not the strongest growth story in relation to Twilio and Okta, but what lacks in growth makes up for strong profitability.
That said, ARR increased by $200 million, compared to an addition of $300 million in the year prior. Looking at annual revenues, Dropbox added $250 million in high-margin revenue in 2020, just shy of the $270 million revenue addition during 2018-2019.\nCheap Valuation\nDropbox's valuation at current levels is a steal: At $26 per share, Dropbox trades at a 1-year forward price to sales of just 4.6, significantly lower than other SaaS stocks in the space. Here, Okta(NASDAQ:OKTA)and Twilio(NYSE:TWLO)trade at over 20 times Price to Sales, while Workday(NASDAQ:WDAY)has a 1-year forward P/S of 10. It is also cheaper than Salesforce(NYSE:CRM), which appears undervalued regarding its growth aspects.\nData by YCharts\nYes, Dropbox is not the strongest growth story in relation to Twilio and Okta, but what lacks in growth makes up for strong profitability. That said, Dropbox is trading at a forward P/E of just 20.6x, significantly lower than the Internet - Services industry's average P/E of 31.94x. Dropbox is also a free cash flow machine, with long-term targets of generating $1 billion in annual free cash flow. I believe this target may realistically be achievable, considering it reached nearly $500 million in free cash flow this year.\nAnalysts expect Dropbox's revenue to reach $2.75 billion by 2025 and annual net income of around $900 million. This would translate into a P/E of just 12x, assuming the share price stays at current levels. To make sure this won't be the case, the company will help investors out a little bit through a $1 billion stock repurchase program.\nIt is also likely that Dropbox's current valuation has raised awareness of other tech companies interested in a strategic acquisition to gain market share in a competitive industry. DocSend has amassed over 17,000 businesses since its inception in 2013 and allows businesses to have one destination to manage the entire lifecycle of a document.\nOn the other hand, the $240 million acquisition of e-signature HelloSign also allows businesses to develop and securely sign contracts while keeping the entire workflow in the Dropbox ecosystem without having to switch. These tools further add stickiness to its platform, which leads to greater customer dependence, raising Dropbox's pricing power.\nIt is also worth mentioning that Dropbox has beaten both revenue and earnings estimates in the last four quarters, meaning that it may outperform the given analyst predictions in the future. Even in the more likely scenario of continuous decelerating growth rates, Dropbox has massive upside potential.\nTakeaways\nThere is not much more to say; Dropbox remains substantially undervalued with significant upside potential in the long-term and may be on the radar for a possible acquisition. Most importantly, the company remains extremely attractively valued at just 20x forward earnings, so long-term investors might be rewarded.\nUndervalued Growth Launching\nThanks for reading!
