Index (CPI) takes top billing in coming days, with third-quarter financials from the country’s largest banks – JPMorgan (JPM), Citi (C), and Wells Fargo (WFC) – following suit in the line of importance.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0f0f37bbff5251cf5a672004561faeef\" tg-width=\"2044\" tg-height=\"1448\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>A fresh CPI reading on Thursday is expected to dictate how much more aggressive the Federal Reserve will get with its interest rate hiking plans, which are already the most combative in decades. The consequential economic release will hold even greater significance after the Labor Department’s September jobs report on Friday suggested officials have further room for increases.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/541f2357db95a28c89672d947882d8dd\" tg-width=\"960\" tg-height=\"589\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>JPMorgan President and CEO Jamie Dimon testifies on Capitol Hill in Washington, U.S., September 22, 2022. (REUTERS/Evelyn Hockstein)</span></p><p>The U.S. economy added 263,000 jobs last month, a moderation from the prior print but still a robust hiring figure, as the unemployment rate fell to 3.5%. The weaker-than-expected decline in payroll gains dashed investor hopes that FOMC members might shift away from monetary tightening sooner than anticipated.</p><p>That reality sent stocks spiraling on Friday. The S&amp;P 500 (^GSPC) plunged 2.8%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) shed 630 points, and the Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) led the way down at a decline of 3.8%. The major averages managed to end higher for the week after three straight down weeks after retaining some gains from a transient rally the first two trading days of October.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d03327c522e4f944485e66952e5c24a2\" tg-width=\"1016\" tg-height=\"600\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>“Persistent strength in hiring and a drop in the unemployment rate, in our view, mean the Fed is unlikely to pivot in the direction of a slower pace of rate hikes until it has more clear evidence that employment growth is slowing,” analysts at Bank of America said in a note on Friday, adding that the institution expects a fourth 75-basis-point rate increase in November.</p><p>And this week’s inflation reading could corroborate such a move next month. According to Bloomberg forecasts, the headline consumer price index for September is expected to show a slight moderation on a year-over-year figure to 8.1% from 8.3% in August, but an increase to 0.2% from 0.1% over the month.</p><p>All eyes will be on the “core” component of the report, which strips out the volatile food and energy categories. Economists surveyed by Bloomberg project core CPI rose to 6.5% from 6.3% over the year but moderated to 0.4% monthly from 0.6% in August.</p><p>Marginal fluctuations in the data have not been reassuring enough to Federal Reserve members that they can step away from intervening any time soon. REUTERS/Evelyn Hockstein</span></p><p>Banks typically benefit from central bank policy tightening, with higher interest rates boosting their net interest income (the bank’s earnings on its lending activities and interest it pays to depositors) and net interest margins (calculated by dividing net interest income by the average income earned from interest-producing assets.) However, challenging market conditions that have dealt a blow to dealmaking activity and general macroeconomic uncertainty are poised to offset higher net interest income.</p><p>Analysts at Bank of America project earnings growth to slow across banks and brokers to 2.0% year-over-year in the third quarter from 5.9% in the second and 7.7% in the third, per bottom-up consensus estimates, per a recent note.</p><p>However, that drop pales in comparison to expectations for sectors outside of financials — with the exception of the energy sector — according to BofA. And updates on tensions in Russia and Ukraine will also remain in focus throughout the week after stocks sank to their lowest levels in a month on Friday, amid concerns about the escalating geopolitical conflict.</p><p>While the emerging threat of military conflict has overshadowed many other worries in the markets, inflation has still remained a central issue for investors. Inflation has implications both in informing the speed at which the Federal Reserve tightens monetary policy, and the extent to which consumers pull back on spending and slow overall economic activity in response to rising prices.</p><p>&#34;I really think most of the Russia-Ukraine volatility occurred in the energy space, particularly with oil. I think the rest of the volatility in the broader market has to do with the Fed tightening conversation,&#34; Frances Stacy, Optimal Capital director of strategy, told Yahoo Finance Live on Friday. &#34;We&#39;re looking at this sort of aggressive tightening against this backdrop of inflation, and I think that that&#39;s what&#39;s causing the volatility.&#34;</p><p>On Friday, the Bureau of Economic Analysis will release its monthly personal consumption expenditures (PCE) deflator, offering a fresh print on the extent of price increases across the recovering economy.</p><p>Consensus economists expect the PCE to post a rise of another 0.6% in January, according to Bloomberg data, accelerating from December&#39;s 0.4% increase. This would represent a 14th consecutive monthly increase, and bring the index up by 6.0% on a year-over-year basis. This, in turn, would mark the fastest increase since 1982, and also accelerate from December&#39;s 5.8% annual rise.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/83b39365db67b4cbe5d9181911de7b8a\" tg-width=\"4421\" tg-height=\"2947\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>The core PCE index — the Fed&#39;s preferred gauge of underlying inflation stripping out volatile food and energy prices — likely also ramped compared to December&#39;s index. Consensus economists are looking for a 5.2% increase in core PCE in January, compared to December&#39;s 4.9% rise.</p><p>Expectations for the latest inflation print suggest the economy has still not yet seen the peak in price increases. And increasingly, central bank officials have come around to the notion that inflation has remained stickier than previously expected, especially as supply chain issues and virus-related disruptions persist.</p><p>&#34;Since the December meeting, I would say that the inflation situation is about the same but probably slightly worse,&#34; Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said in a January press conference. &#34;I’d be inclined to raise my own estimate of 2022 core PCE inflation ... by a few tenths today.&#34;</p><p>And the latest print on PCE will likely reaffirm readings from other closely watched inflation prints. The January Consumer Price Index (CPI) jumped by 7.5% year-over-year to represent the largest increase since 1982, accelerating markedly from the 7.0% increase from December. And on the producer side, wholesale prices jumped 9.7% year-on-year in January, ticking down only slightly from December&#39;s record increase of 9.8%.</p><h2>Consumer confidence</h2><h2></h2><p>Despite the mounting inflationary pressures, however, consumers have largely continued to spend. Retail sales rose by a better-than-expected 3.8% in January, marking the biggest jump since March 2021 and exceeding estimates.</p><p>And this steady consumption has come even as consumers increasingly cited inflation as a key concern for their own personal finances. Average hourly wages have also climbed in recent months, but have still not kept pace with inflation.</p><p>&#34;The resilience of spending stands in stark contrast to the slump in consumer confidence, with households upping their purchases of big ticket items while simultaneously reporting that now is a particularly bad time to make those purchases,&#34; Paul Ashworth, chief North American economist for Capital Economics, wrote in a note. &#34;The surge in inflation is the root cause of consumer angst. Sentiment should improve as inflation falls back later this year, but the current weakness is a reminder that real consumption growth will be muted this year.&#34;</p><p>The Conference Board&#39;s Consumer Confidence Index due for release on Tuesday will help provide a timely snapshot of consumers&#39; thinking following the latest spike in prices at the beginning of the year. Consensus economists are looking for the index to fall to 110.0 for February, which would mark the lowest level since September 2021, when the Delta variant had weighed on consumers&#39; outlooks. The consumer confidence index had been at 113.8 in January.</p><h2>Earnings season rolls on</h2><h2><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2704a78dbeac36d3a78a7c3a7e70f026\" tg-width=\"1878\" tg-height=\"2016\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></h2><p>Investors will also receive a number of new earnings results this week, with major retailers including Home Depot (HD), Lowe&#39;s (LOW), Macy&#39;s (M) and The TJX Cos. (TJX) reporting alongside other closely watched names from Coinbase (COIN) to <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/W\">Wayfair</a> (W) and Nikola (NKLA).</p><p>So far this earnings season, corporate profits have remained robust, albeit while slowing compared to prior quarters. As of Friday, 84% of S&amp;P 500 companies had reported actual fourth-quarter earnings results, according to FactSet. And the estimated earnings growth rate for S&amp;P 500 companies in aggregate stood at 30.9%, compared to about 40% from the third quarter.</p><p>Still, the estimated earnings growth rate for the fourth quarter has trended continuously higher as more companies reported better-than-expected results. On December 31, the estimated earnings growth rate for the fourth quarter had been at just 21.2%.</p><p>But while results for many companies have been positive for the final three months of 2021, outlooks have weakened, reflecting lingering supply chain uncertainty, rising prices and other macro concerns. And updates on tensions in Russia and Ukraine will also remain in focus throughout the week after stocks sank to their lowest levels in a month on Friday, amid concerns about the escalating geopolitical conflict.While the emerging threat of military conflict has overshadowed many other worries in the markets, inflation has still remained a central issue for investors. Inflation has implications both in informing the speed at which the Federal Reserve tightens monetary policy, and the extent to which consumers pull back on spending and slow overall economic activity in response to rising prices.\"I really think most of the Russia-Ukraine volatility occurred in the energy space, particularly with oil. I think the rest of the volatility in the broader market has to do with the Fed tightening conversation,\" Frances Stacy, Optimal Capital director of strategy, told Yahoo Finance Live on Friday. \"We're looking at this sort of aggressive tightening against this backdrop of inflation, and I think that that's what's causing the volatility.\"On Friday, the Bureau of Economic Analysis will release its monthly personal consumption expenditures (PCE) deflator, offering a fresh print on the extent of price increases across the recovering economy.Consensus economists expect the PCE to post a rise of another 0.6% in January, according to Bloomberg data, accelerating from December's 0.4% increase. This would represent a 14th consecutive monthly increase, and bring the index up by 6.0% on a year-over-year basis. This, in turn, would mark the fastest increase since 1982, and also accelerate from December's 5.8% annual rise.The core PCE index — the Fed's preferred gauge of underlying inflation stripping out volatile food and energy prices — likely also ramped compared to December's index. Consensus economists are looking for a 5.2% increase in core PCE in January, compared to December's 4.9% rise.Expectations for the latest inflation print suggest the economy has still not yet seen the peak in price increases. And increasingly, central bank officials have come around to the notion that inflation has remained stickier than previously expected, especially as supply chain issues and virus-related disruptions persist.\"Since the December meeting, I would say that the inflation situation is about the same but probably slightly worse,\" Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said in a January press conference. \"I’d be inclined to raise my own estimate of 2022 core PCE inflation ... by a few tenths today.\"And the latest print on PCE will likely reaffirm readings from other closely watched inflation prints. The January Consumer Price Index (CPI) jumped by 7.5% year-over-year to represent the largest increase since 1982, accelerating markedly from the 7.0% increase from December. And on the producer side, wholesale prices jumped 9.7% year-on-year in January, ticking down only slightly from December's record increase of 9.8%.Consumer confidenceDespite the mounting inflationary pressures, however, consumers have largely continued to spend. Retail sales rose by a better-than-expected 3.8% in January, marking the biggest jump since March 2021 and exceeding estimates.And this steady consumption has come even as consumers increasingly cited inflation as a key concern for their own personal finances. Average hourly wages have also climbed in recent months, but have still not kept pace with inflation.\"The resilience of spending stands in stark contrast to the slump in consumer confidence, with households upping their purchases of big ticket items while simultaneously reporting that now is a particularly bad time to make those purchases,\" Paul Ashworth, chief North American economist for Capital Economics, wrote in a note. \"The surge in inflation is the root cause of consumer angst. Sentiment should improve as inflation falls back later this year, but the current weakness is a reminder that real consumption growth will be muted this year.\"The Conference Board's Consumer Confidence Index due for release on Tuesday will help provide a timely snapshot of consumers' thinking following the latest spike in prices at the beginning of the year. Consensus economists are looking for the index to fall to 110.0 for February, which would mark the lowest level since September 2021, when the Delta variant had weighed on consumers' outlooks. The consumer confidence index had been at 113.8 in January.Earnings season rolls onInvestors will also receive a number of new earnings results this week, with major retailers including Home Depot (HD), Lowe's (LOW), Macy's (M) and The TJX Cos. (TJX) reporting alongside other closely watched names from Coinbase (COIN) to Wayfair (W) and Nikola (NKLA).So far this earnings season, corporate profits have remained robust, albeit while slowing compared to prior quarters. As of Friday, 84% of S&P 500 companies had reported actual fourth-quarter earnings results, according to FactSet. And the estimated earnings growth rate for S&P 500 companies in aggregate stood at 30.9%, compared to about 40% from the third quarter.Still, the estimated earnings growth rate for the fourth quarter has trended continuously higher as more companies reported better-than-expected results. On December 31, the estimated earnings growth rate for the fourth quarter had been at just 21.2%.But while results for many companies have been positive for the final three months of 2021, outlooks have weakened, reflecting lingering supply chain uncertainty, rising prices and other macro concerns. Whether a late October low will be the bottom or a short-term low is yet to be seen, but given how high valuations are, more work will need to be done for the bottom to be put in place.</p><p>It&#39;s All About Rates</p><p>The S&amp;P 500 earnings yield for 2022 minus the 10-Yr real yield is currently 4.56%. Historically, that is at the lower end of the range and associated with market tops, not bottoms. For example, the 4.5% region was visited in December 2016, January 2018, October 2018, and June 2020. The only case that didn&#39;t see a significant decline was in December 2016, when the index consolidated sideways for nearly three months.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/cbe9b42330ab57d8cb7fcad9ad287b66\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"249\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Bloomberg</p><p>Since 2014, the average spread between the S&amp;P 500 current year earnings yields and the 10-Yr real yield has been around 5.2%, with a standard deviation range of 4.87% to 5.57%. Currently, the S&amp;P 500 premium to the 10-yr TIP is more than two standard deviations from the average. The spread would need to rise by 30 bps to get the index back to within one standard deviation, or by 65 bps to return to the historical average.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/716b902ff03171d3d6501fc54cd5e4ff\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"348\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Bloomberg</p><p>Another 9% Decline?</p><p>The S&amp;P 500 has an earnings yield based on 2022 earnings estimates of 6.17%. An increase of 30 bps would increase the yield to 6.47%, and an increase of 60 bps would increase the yield to 6.77%. The earnings yield is simply the inverse of the PE ratio, which means the current PE ratio is 16.2 and would need to fall to 15.4 or 14.7 to bring the S&amp;P 500 back to a historically average fair value.</p><p>With the earnings estimates for 2022 currently tracking at $224.73, it would value the S&amp;P 500 in a range of 3,460 to 3,300. That leaves the spread between the ten and 2-year Treasury nowhere close to putting in a bottom, and means the Fed is probably nowhere close to finishing its rate hiking cycle.</p><p>If the Fed is nowhere close to finishing its rate hiking cycle, then rates probably aren&#39;t finished rising. Will the company’s full explanation play any better?</p><p>The electric-car company posts production and delivery numbers ahead of its formal earnings report, giving investors weeks to extrapolate trends based on limited information. This time, debate has focused on the short bit of commentary that Tesla provided as it posted 343,830 deliveries for the third quarter, below the 371,000 that analysts tracked by FactSet had been expecting, and also below the 365,923 vehicles that the company said it produced in the period.</p><p>Tesla explained in a press release that delivery volumes have been heavily weighted to the end of quarters “due to regional batch building of cars,” but that as production volumes have increased, it’s become “increasingly challenging to secure vehicle transportation capacity and at a reasonable cost during these peak logistics weeks.” The company has moved to “a more even regional mix of vehicle builds each week, which led to an increase in cars in transit at the end of the quarter.”</p><p>Tesla’s stock fell 8.6% in the first trading session after the deliveries were announced.</p><p>While Tesla seemed to peg its problems to delivery logistics, some analysts weren’t sure that was the only challenge facing the Elon Musk-led company these days.</p><p>“A top concern right now is demand in China as wait times seem to be shrinking,” wrote RBC Capital Markets analyst Joseph Spak. The question is whether the wait-time issue is a “blip” or indicative of “a bigger change among consumers.”</p><p>Spak added that there is “some overall concern about demand (not just China)” headed into Tesla’s report.</p><p>Guggenheim’s Ali Faghri also wrote of potential demand issues in China, even though he thought the U.S. outlook remained strong.</p><p>“Our conclusion is that the sharp moderation in China wait times is at least partially attributable to weaker demand amid increasing competition from lower priced domestic OEMs [original equipment manufacturers],” he said in a note to clients.</p><p>“While wait times in the U.S. and Europe remain healthy, we see potential similarities between Europe and China (macro pressures, increasing competition, ramping supply),” he continued. “Overall, we see risk that TSLA is reaching demand saturation in its most important market globally (China, with tail risk in Europe).”</p><p>Such a dynamic could weigh on the company’s ability to hit its delivery goals and “potentially pressure the stock’s premium valuation as the story shifts from supply-constrained (high multiple) to demand-constrained (lower multiple),” Faghri added.</p><p>Wells Fargo analyst Colin Langan highlighted a number of puts and takes in thinking about broader demand for Tesla vehicles heading into next year.</p><p>“While IRA [the Inflation Recovery Act] will help in 2023, the economy and interest rates likely will not, particularly in Europe where an energy crisis looms,” he wrote. “If consumers are watching costs, a $60K vehicle purchase could get deferred.”</p><p>UBS analyst Patrick Hummel also chimed in that “[t]he debate about EVs has shifted to the demand side, after delivery times have come down significantly,” but he saw opportunity for Tesla in that dynamic.</p><p>“We think Tesla is best positioned to use pricing as the tool to fill its factories,” he wrote, noting that price reductions could help Tesla gain share over electric-vehicle companies and further compete against sellers of gas-powered cars.</p><p>Tesla is due to post its third-quarter results Oct. 19 after the closing bell.</p><h2>What to expect</h2><p><b>Revenue:</b> Analysts expect Tesla to report $22.14 billion in revenue, up from $13.76 billion a year prior.</p><p>According to Estimize, which crowdsources projections from hedge funds, academics, and others, the average estimate calls for $22.63 billion in revenue.</p><p><b>Earnings:</b> The FactSet consensus calls for $1.01 a share in September-quarter adjusted earnings, up from 62 cents a share in the year-prior quarter. Those polled by Estimize are looking for $1.13 in adjusted earnings per share on average.</p><p><b>Stock movement:</b> Tesla shares have gained following three of the company’s last five earnings reports. They logged a 9.8% rally in the session following the company’s most recent report.</p><p>Tesla’s stock is off 37% so far this year, as the S&amp;P 500 has fallen 23%.</p><p>Of the 42 analysts tracked by FactSet who cover Tesla’s stock, 27 have buy ratings, 11 have hold ratings, and four have sell ratings, with an average price target of $305.58.</p><h2>What else to watch for</h2><p>Production-related commentary will be worth monitoring given all the moving parts at Tesla.</p><p>“While management cited logistics issues that slowed end-of-quarter deliveries, we think this reflects the challenges ramping up production at its two new factories as well as restarting the Shanghai plant after the COVID-19 lockdowns during the second quarter,” wrote Morningstar analyst Seth Goldstein, though he saw “no long-term issues that would affect production.”</p><p>Oppenheimer’s Colin Rusch was similarly interested in a capacity rundown.</p><p>“We are expecting a substantial update on rate of TSLA’s capacity ramp in incremental capacity in Shanghai along with its Berlin and Austin facilities on the company’s earnings call,” he wrote. “With production underway in Berlin and Austin, we expect investors to be focused on the pace of ramp in the face of supply chain headwinds.”</p><p>As always, investors will be watching for any forward-looking commentary around deliveries or demand trends more generally.</p><p>“We believe TSLA will come out and reiterate their goal of around 50% growth,” RBC’s Spak wrote. “However, we do see some potential risk to 4Q22 deliveries in the U.S. as a subset of consumers may choose to delay delivery until 2023 to take advantage of IRA EV tax credits,” referring to electric vehicle credits from the Inflation Recovery Act.</p></body></html>","source":"lsy1603348471595","collect":0,"html":"<!DOCTYPE html>\n<html>\n<head>\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; Asked if that included raising rates by a full percentage point, he replied, “it would mean everything.”</p><p>The comments added fuel to bets that the Fed is more likely than not to raise interest rates by 100 basis points when it meets July 26-27, which would be the largest increase since the Fed started directly using overnight interest rates to conduct monetary policy in the early 1990s. Americans are furious over high prices and critics blame the Fed for its initial slow response.</p><p>“I think they have time, if they want, to change that expectation to 100. The Bank of Canada on Wednesday increased rates by a surprise full percentage point amid fears that decades-high price pressures are becoming entrenched.</p><p>What Bloomberg Economics Says...</p><blockquote>“The Fed is right to worry about the unmooring of inflation expectations -- and this report raises the chance of an even larger rate hike than 75 basis points down the line.”-- Anna Wong and Andrew Husby, economists</blockquote><p>Brett Ryan, senior US economist at Deutsche Bank AG, said it made sense to price in some risk of a larger Fed move, but saw it as unlikely without explicit communication from the central bank.</p><p>“The hawks had to have agreed to the guidance of 50 to 75, with the understanding that if we got an upside print, 75 would be the number,” he said. “They have time to communicate if they want to put that message out there.”</p><p>The US central bank has pivoted to aggressive policy tightening to confront the highest inflation in 40 years, which critics say was egged on by policy makers’ slow initial response. They raised rates by 75 basis points last month -- the largest increase since 1994 -- despite previously signaling that they were on track for a smaller half-point move.</p><p>“You have to put 100 on the table for July,” said Andrew Hollenhorst, Citigroup chief US economist. “Everybody should be quite cautious about calling peak inflation -- a few months ago the peak was supposed to be 8.3%.”</p><p>Fed officials have said they want to push policy into restrictive territory, to a range of 3.25 to 3.5% by the end of this year, according to the median projection from the quarterly economic projections released in June. Futures markets Wednesday showed investors pricing in an even higher 3.5% to 3.75% range by year end.</p><p>Economists warn that such a fast pace of large increases could push the US into recession. Last month, the US economy added 372,000 jobs while the unemployment rate held steady at 3.6%.</p><p>&#34;The strong 372,000 gain in non-farm payrolls in June appears to make a mockery of claims the economy is heading into, let alone already in, a recession,&#34; said Andrew Hunter, senior US economist at Capital Economics.</p><p>Following this report, investors and economists were in broad agreement that continued strength in the labor market sets the table for another 0.75% interest rate increase from the Federal Reserve later this month. In the week ahead, investor attention will turn to Wednesday morning&#39;s inflation data for more clarity on this issue.</p><p>Economists estimate headline inflation rose 8.8% last month, an increase that would be the highest since December 1981, and the hottest inflation reading of this current cycle. Ethan Harris and the economics team at Bank of America Global Research notice a more than 7% monthly increase in energy inflation pushing this data to another high.</p><p>This reading on inflation, however, will come as energy and commodity prices have shown signs of moderating in recent weeks. Crude oil is down over 12% in the last month, while the price of commodities like corn, soybeans, and wheat were down over 20% through last Wednesday.</p><p>Some analysts suggested recession fears and high prices have begun to result in demand destruction. In the week ahead, investor attention will turn to Wednesday morning's inflation data for more clarity on this issue.Economists estimate headline inflation rose 8.8% last month, an increase that would be the highest since December 1981, and the hottest inflation reading of this current cycle. The stir is just a tempest in a teapot. There is no new short-selling champion for Tesla bears to hoist onto their shoulders.</p><p>A put option is, generally speaking, a bearish bet. It gives the holder the right to sell a stock at a fixed price in the future. Holders of put options do better the lower a stock price falls.</p><p>A quarterly regulatory filing indicated that Deer Park had amassed put-option contracts representing more than 4.8 million shares of Tesla (ticker: TSLA) stock. That much Tesla stock is worth roughly $4.3 billion at current prices. On the surface that looks like a massive bet.</p><p>But that isn&#39;t really the way options work. The price paid for an options contract depends on many factors including the strike price and time to contract expiration.</p><p>Consider Tesla put options that expire Friday Aug. 19, and give the holder the right to sell Tesla stock at about $800 a share are essentially trading for about one cent. Theoretically, amassing options contracts that reflect 4.8 million shares of Tesla could cost someone $48,000. That&#39;s a long way from $4.3 billion.</p><p>It wouldn&#39;t be a good idea, though. There isn&#39;t high probability that Tesla stock will drop about $100 in the final hour of trading Friday.</p><p>(There isn&#39;t much trading volume in those contracts. It&#39;s just an example.)</p><p>Deer Park Chief Investment Officer Scott Burg told Barron&#39;s the Tesla put-options position amounted to 0.1% of his portfolio. That isn&#39;t all that much, and indicates Deer Park probably paid the less than $1 per share represented the puts.</p><p>That isn&#39;t a lot for a stock worth about $900. That also means the put options were either expiring soon, or deeply out of the money, or both. Burg didn&#39;t get into contract specifics, but said the position was closed profitably. The tiny position is already gone.</p><p>Profits aren&#39;t hard to fathom. Tesla stock did fall, along with other technology shares, in the second quarter. Tesla stock dropped almost 38% from the end of March to the end of June while the Nasdaq Composite fell 22% over the same span.</p><p>Burg doesn&#39;t consider himself a big Tesla bear. He&#39;s says he is bearish on the overall economy and the consumer. He expects Tesla stock to struggle, but just like any other consumer discretionary stock this coming year.</p><p>The whole episode does illustrate an important lesson about options trading. There are many ways to use options in a portfolio.</p><p>Investors can buy options contracts far from current prices. They are cheap and only pay off if extreme events happen. They can also be used to bet on volatility. Options get more valuable as stock volatility rises and less valuable when volatility falls. Options can be used to hedge a portfolio, too.</p><p>What&#39;s more, bearish options bets can actually generate income for bullish investors. Take Tesla. It doesn&#39;t pay a dividend. If that irks some shareholders they can sell call options contracts. (Selling a call is similar to a put option. Both work out if the stock falls. It&#39;s a bearish bet.)</p><p>A Tesla holder selling a $900 call option that expires in September gets about $44. That&#39;s almost 5% the value of the Tesla stock. The risk with selling call options against stock held is that the stock could go up. If Tesla hit $1,000, that holder would have essentially sold some of his position for $900, missing out on the additional gain.</p><p>There are many other things pros do with options. The stir is just a tempest in a teapot. There is no new short-selling champion for Tesla bears to hoist onto their shoulders.A put option is, generally speaking, a bearish bet. It gives the holder the right to sell a stock at a fixed price in the future. Holders of put options do better the lower a stock price falls.A quarterly regulatory filing indicated that Deer Park had amassed put-option contracts representing more than 4.8 million shares of Tesla (ticker: TSLA) stock. That much Tesla stock is worth roughly $4.3 billion at current prices. On the surface that looks like a massive bet.But that isn't really the way options work. The price paid for an options contract depends on many factors including the strike price and time to contract expiration.Consider Tesla put options that expire Friday Aug. 19, and give the holder the right to sell Tesla stock at about $800 a share are essentially trading for about one cent. Theoretically, amassing options contracts that reflect 4.8 million shares of Tesla could cost someone $48,000. That's a long way from $4.3 billion.It wouldn't be a good idea, though. There isn't high probability that Tesla stock will drop about $100 in the final hour of trading Friday.(There isn't much trading volume in those contracts. It's just an example.)Deer Park Chief Investment Officer Scott Burg told Barron's the Tesla put-options position amounted to 0.1% of his portfolio. That isn't all that much, and indicates Deer Park probably paid the less than $1 per share represented the puts.That isn't a lot for a stock worth about $900. That also means the put options were either expiring soon, or deeply out of the money, or both. Burg didn't get into contract specifics, but said the position was closed profitably. The tiny position is already gone.Profits aren't hard to fathom. Tesla stock did fall, along with other technology shares, in the second quarter. Tesla stock dropped almost 38% from the end of March to the end of June while the Nasdaq Composite fell 22% over the same span.Burg doesn't consider himself a big Tesla bear. He's says he is bearish on the overall economy and the consumer. He expects Tesla stock to struggle, but just like any other consumer discretionary stock this coming year.The whole episode does illustrate an important lesson about options trading. There are many ways to use options in a portfolio.Investors can buy options contracts far from current prices. They are cheap and only pay off if extreme events happen. They can also be used to bet on volatility. Options get more valuable as stock volatility rises and less valuable when volatility falls. Options can be used to hedge a portfolio, too.What's more, bearish options bets can actually generate income for bullish investors. Take Tesla. It doesn't pay a dividend. If that irks some shareholders they can sell call options contracts. (Selling a call is similar to a put option. Both work out if the stock falls. It's a bearish bet.)A Tesla holder selling a $900 call option that expires in September gets about $44. That's almost 5% the value of the Tesla stock. The risk with selling call options against stock held is that the stock could go up. If Tesla hit $1,000, that holder would have essentially sold some of his position for $900, missing out on the additional gain.There are many other things pros do with options.
