Investors were disappointed by softer-than-expected subscriber growth and an uncertain future in the short term, Cramer noted.\n“After the incredible performance this company’s given us over the years, you’ve gotta remember that doubting Netflix has been a mistake every step of the way,” Cramer said on “Mad Money.”\nNetflix reported having 208 million paid subscribers at the end of March, a 14% increase from a year ago but short of the 210 million figure the company expected.\nDespite the dip in subscriber growth, CFO Spencer Neumann said on the conference call that “business remains healthy,” engagement is increasing and customer turnover is declining.\n“To me, that says ‘please, don’t panic’ ... I think they’ll find a way to jumpstart new sign-ups with must-see content, whether they create it themselves or have to license it from someone else,” Cramer said. “In other words, I am giving Netflix credit for something that doesn’t exist yet, something that will make us feel compelled to subscribe despite all the competition.”\nEarlier Wednesday, Cramer said Netflix stock could potentially drop to $490 a share, though he remains bullish in the long run. Netflix shares finished at $508.90 on Wednesday, down 14% from their peak trade in January.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":220,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[{"author":{"id":"3579391473717940","authorId":"3579391473717940","name":"thekang","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/257a55b2b4eff5b143f883be20deac55","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"authorIdStr":"3579391473717940","idStr":"3579391473717940"},"content":"please help with me too","text":"please help with me too","html":"please help with me too"}],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":194296023,"gmtCreate":1621381430362,"gmtModify":1704356587273,"author":{"id":"3575256482663287","authorId":"3575256482663287","name":"schipperde","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/0b7cf989e27b604b5a89d0ffc9453710","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3575256482663287","idStr":"3575256482663287"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Pls help like n comment","listText":"Pls help like n comment","text":"Pls help like n comment","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":6,"commentSize":8,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/194296023","repostId":"2136999458","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2136999458","kind":"highlight","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Reuters.com brings you the latest news from around the world, covering breaking news in markets, business, politics, entertainment and technology","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Reuters","id":"1036604489","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/443ce19704621c837795676028cec868"},"pubTimestamp":1621372003,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2136999458?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-05-19 05:06","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Wall Street closes lower on weak telecom stocks despite strong retail earnings","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2136999458","media":"Reuters","summary":"May 18 (Reuters) - U.S. stocks ended down on Tuesday, slumping on a sharp decline in telecom stocks ","content":"
May 18 (Reuters) - U.S. stocks ended down on Tuesday, slumping on a sharp decline in telecom stocks and weak housing starts data that overshadowed better-than-expected earnings from Walmart and Home Depot.

AT&T Inc shed 5.8%, among the biggest percentage decliners in the benchmark S&P 500. The print is expected to show a rise of 3.5% in April over last year for the biggest increase since 2008, according to Bloomberg consensus data. This would also accelerate after a year-on-year jump of 2.3% in March. On a month-over-month basis, the PCE likely increased by 0.6%, accelerating after a 0.5% increase during the prior month.

Stripping away volatile food and energy prices, the so-called core PCE is expected to have increased by 2.9% in April over last year, which would be the largest jump in more than two decades.

Though the core PCE serves as the Federal Reserve's preferred inflation gauge, the expected surge in this week's inflation reports are unlikely to provoke immediate concern for the central bank. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell has said repeatedly he believes inflationary pressures this year will be \"transitory,\" largely reflecting base effects as this year's data lap last year's pandemic-depressed levels. And for years previously, inflation ran well below the central bank's targeted levels.

In the words of the central bank's latest monetary policy statement, Federal Open Market Committee members wrote, \"With inflation running persistently below this longer-run goal, the Committee will aim to achieve inflation moderately above 2% for some time so that inflation averages 2% over time and longer‑term inflation expectations remain well anchored at 2%.\" In other words, the Fed has suggested monetary policy would remain as is — with interest rates near zero and the Fed's asset purchases taking place at a rate of $120 billion per month — as the economic recovery out of the pandemic progresses.

Still, the market has suggested it might need more convincing before agreeing that the jump in inflation will not be long-lasting or prompt a change in the Fed's current ultra-accommodative monetary policy positioning. Longer-duration assets like growth and technology stocks have especially come under pressure in recent months amid inflationary concerns, given prospects that higher rates might undercut future earnings potential. The information technology sector has sharply underperformed the broader S&P 500 so far this year, reversing course after outperforming strongly in 2020.

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA - APRIL 15: A pedestrian carries a shopping bag as he walks through the Union Square shopping district on April 15, 2021 in San Francisco, California. Government data showed that headline consumer prices surged by a faster than expected 4.2% last month. Excluding food and energy, prices jumped 0.9% in April and were up 3.0% over the year. And producer prices also came in higher than expected, with core producer prices rising 4.1% in April over last year versus the 3.8% increase expected. These stronger-than-expected increases could portend some upside risk to this week's PCE print, some economists suggested.

\"The April CPI data were stronger than our expectation, suggesting a more front-loaded impact from transitory factors, pressure from semiconductor shortages and the resurgence of demand for sectors affected by the pandemic,\" Nomura Chief Economist Lewis Alexander wrote in a note Friday. \"Given that the core PCE price index is a chain-weighted index, an expected rise in spending for COVID-sensitive services could amplify the magnitude of corresponding prices.\"

Consumer confidence

Updated readings on sentiment among consumers are also due for release this week.

On Main Street, consumers have also observed rising prices. Inflation concerns have weighed on sentiment even as COVID-19 cases drop and more businesses reopen following widespread vaccinations.

\"Consumers have taken notice of rising inflation, as evidenced by Google Trends and the University of Michigan survey,\" Bank of America economist Michelle Meyer wrote in a note, referring to the University of Michigan's Surveys of Consumers. \"The expectation is increasingly for higher inflation, even if dominated by transitory stories, and we believe there is risk for further upside in the near term. But, over the medium term, we expect expectations to cool alongside the core inflation trajectory, albeit to a higher trend.\"

In the University of Michigan's preliminary May consumer sentiment survey, the headline index tumbled to 82.8 from 88.3 in April, \"due to higher inflation—the highest expected year-ahead inflation rate as well as the highest long term inflation rate in the past decade,\" Richard Curtin, chief economist for the University of Michigan's Surveys of Consumers, wrote in a note at the time. However, he added that \"consumer spending will still advance despite higher prices due to pent-up demand and record saving balances.\"

The University of Michigan's final May sentiment print due for release on Friday is expected to firm slightly to 83.0.

Other sentiment surveys will likely show similar dips for May, due in part to rising price pressures. The Conference Board's closely watched Consumer Confidence Index will be released on Tuesday, and is expected to dip to 118.9 in May from 121.7 in April. That had, in turn, been the highest reading since February 2020, or before COVID-19 cases began to surge in the U.S. last year.

Earnings calendar

Monday: Lordstown Motors Corp. (RIDE) after market close

Tuesday: AutoZone (AZO) before market open; Intuit (INTU), Nordstrom (JWN), Zscaler (ZS), Agilent Technologies (A) after market close

Wednesday: Dick's Sporting Goods (DKS), Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF) before market open; American Eagle Outfitters (AEO), Nvidia (NVDA), Okta (OKTA), Snowflake (SNOW), Workday (WDAY), Williams-Sonoma (WSM) after market close

Thursday: Best Buy (BBY), Dollar General (DG) before market open; Costco (COST), The Gap (GPS), VMWare (VMW), Box (BOX), Autodesk (ADSK), HP Inc (HPQ), Salesforce.com Inc. But, over the medium term, we expect expectations to cool alongside the core inflation trajectory, albeit to a higher trend.\"In the University of Michigan's preliminary May consumer sentiment survey, the headline index tumbled to 82.8 from 88.3 in April, \"due to higher inflation—the highest expected year-ahead inflation rate as well as the highest long term inflation rate in the past decade,\" Richard Curtin, chief economist for the University of Michigan's Surveys of Consumers, wrote in a note at the time. However, he added that \"consumer spending will still advance despite higher prices due to pent-up demand and record saving balances.\"The University of Michigan's final May sentiment print due for release on Friday is expected to firm slightly to 83.0.Other sentiment surveys will likely show similar dips for May, due in part to rising price pressures. The Conference Board's closely watched Consumer Confidence Index will be released on Tuesday, and is expected to dip to 118.9 in May from 121.7 in April. That had, in turn, been the highest reading since February 2020, or before COVID-19 cases began to surge in the U.S. last year.Earnings calendarMonday: Lordstown Motors Corp. Apple said Spotify wants “all the benefits of the App Store but don’t think they should have to pay anything for that,” by choosing to object to its 15-30% commission on in-app payments for streaming apps.\nApple isn’t currently facing any antitrust charges from government officials in the U.S. and such a lawsuit may never materialize, though the Department of Justice wasreportedly granted oversight of the company’s competitive practices in 2019. But even if the government declines to press charges, recent actions in Congress, state legislatures and in private lawsuits demonstrate a significant shift in the American public’s sentiment toward Apple and the tech industry at large.\nWhen the commissionslapped its first record competition fineagainstGooglein 2017, it wasn’t yet clear that the U.S. might be ready to move on from its once-cozy relationship with its booming tech industry. But in 2018, on the heels of the revelations of howFacebookuser data was used by analytics company Cambridge Analytica during the 2016 election, and increasing questions about how tech platforms can impact American democracy, that seemed to change.\nNow, as Europe continues to move forward with its probe into Apple, the U.S. no longer seems to be so far behind.\nHere’s where Apple stands to face risk of antitrust action or regulation in the U.S.:\nDOJ\nThe DOJ has already moved forward with a massive lawsuit against Google, so it could take some time if it decides to ramp up a probe into Apple. Though the DOJ’s Antitrust Division took on oversight authority of Apple in a 2019 agreement with the FTC, according to aWall Street Journal report, the Google investigation has seemed to take priority.\nStill, then-Attorney General Bill Barr announced later that year that the DOJ wouldconduct a broad antitrust review of Big Tech companies.\nAny action from the DOJ or state enforcers would take the form of a settlement or lawsuit, which would put Apple’s fate in the hands of the courts.\nPrivate lawsuits\nApple’s most immediate challenge in the U.S. has come from private companies bringing antitrust charges against its business in court.\nThe most notable of these lawsuits isfrom Fortnite-maker Epic Games, which is set to begin its trial on Monday. Epic filed its lawsuit with a PR blitz afterchallenging Apple’s in-app payment feeby advertising in its app an alternative, cheaper way to buy character outfits from Epic directly, violating Apple’s rules. That prompted Apple to remove Fortnite from its App Store. Epic filed the suit shortly after and Applefiled counterclaimsagainst Epic for allegedly breaching its contract.\n“Although Epic portrays itself as a modern corporate Robin Hood, in reality it is a multi-billion dollar enterprise that simply wants to pay nothing for the tremendous value it derives from the App Store,” Apple said in a filing with the District Court for the Northern District of California in September.\nCongress\nJust last week, several app-makers testified before the Senate Judiciary subcommittee on antitrust about the alleged anti-competitive harms they’ve facedfrom restrictions on both Apple and Google’s app stores.\nRepresentatives from Apple and Google told lawmakers they simply charge for the technology and the work they put into running the app stores, which have significantly lowered distribution costs for app developers over the years.\nBut witnesses from Tinder-ownerMatch Group, item-tracking device-maker Tile and Spotify painted a different picture.\n“We’re all afraid,” Match Group chief legal officer Jared Sine testified of the platforms’ broad power over their businesses.\nThe witnesses discussed the seemingly arbitrary nature by which Apple allegedly enforces its App Store rules. Spotify’s legal chief claimed Apple has threatened retaliation on numerous occasions and Tile’s top lawyer said Apple denied access to a key feature that wouldimprove their object-tracking product, before utilizing it for Apple’s own rival gadget, called AirTag.\nTile said that while Apple now makes the feature available for third-party developers to incorporate, accessing it would mean handing over a significant amount of data and control to Apple. Apple’s representative said its product is different from Tile’s and opening the feature in question will encourage further competition in the space.\nSenators at the hearing seemed receptive to the app developers’ complaints, which build on earlier claims made before House lawmakers. The House Judiciary subcommittee on antitrust found in a more than year-long probe thatAmazon, Apple, Facebook and Googleall hold monopoly power, and lawmakers are currently crafting bills to enable stronger antitrust enforcement of digital markets.\nState Legislatures\nSeveral state legislatures have beenconsidering bills that would require platforms like Apple and Google to allow app-makers to use their own payment processing systems. While the bills have so far hadvarying degrees of successin the early stages of lawmaking, passage in one state could raise a host of questions about how it should be enforced given the ambiguous nature of digital borders.\nThe bills have been supported by the Coalition for App Fairness, a group of companies that have complained about app store fees, including Epic Games, Match Group and Spotify.\nApple has often argued that it maintains features like payments within its own ecosystem in order to protect consumers and secure their data, though app developers and lawmakers have expressed skepticism about that reasoning.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":75,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[{"author":{"id":"3581678282566598","authorId":"3581678282566598","name":"granola","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/794ef04b19a3c79578c403c50a016ac3","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"authorIdStr":"3581678282566598","idStr":"3581678282566598"},"content":"Please help me too! The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 179.35 points to 34,756.39. The Nasdaq Composite outperformed with a nearly 1.5% rally to 13,814.49.\nThe major averages all registered modest gains for the week. The blue-chip Dow and the S&P 500 advanced about 0.7% and 0.6%, respectively, on the week for their second straight positive week. The tech-heavy Nasdaq gained just shy of 0.5% this week for its third winning week in a row.\nThe U.S. economy added 559,000 jobs in May, the Labor Department said on Friday. The number came in slightly lower than an estimate of 671,000 from economists surveyed by Dow Jones, but still showed a healthy rebound in the labor market. It’s an improvement from the upwardly revised 278,000 payrolls added in April.\nThe unemployment rate fell to 5.8% from 6.1%, which was better than the estimate of 5.9%. Many believe the jobs report, while solid, is not strong enough to trigger the Federal Reserve to dial back its bond buying program.\nThe jobs number is “goldilocks for risk,” said John Briggs, global head of strategy at NatWest Markets. It’s “not too hot to bring in the Fed and not too cold to worry about the economy.”\nThe 10-year Treasury yield dipped slightly following the jobs report. Bond yields had jumped higher in recent months amid rising inflation expectations.\n“While the job gains were somewhat modest relative to expectations, the good news is the figure rebounded from last month’s disappointing miss,” said Charlie Ripley, vice president of portfolio management at Allianz Investment Management. “Overall, today’s report does provide progress in the right direction.”\nMeme stocks continued their wild prices swings on Friday, but this time to the downside.
