Many companies faced adversity throughout the pandemic, and some are still recovering, but not BABA. Through the worst economic environment for businesses to navigate in recent times, BABA generated over $100 billion in revenue and $20 billion in net income during their recent fiscal year. While BABA didn't get the memo about businesses facing challenges amidst the pandemic, the market must not have read BABA's earnings report or crunched the numbers.
\n
There are two Chinese companies I am bullish on, and BABA is my biggest conviction for appreciation. BABA smashed through the $300 share price level at the end of October 2020, but shareholders have been left confused and disappointed since then. It looked like BABA would turn the corner after a horrible end to 2020 as shares appreciated from $222.36 from the close of 2020 to $270.83 in the middle of February 2021. Still, the markets had other plans, and all shares of BABA have done is disappoint shareholders. If you missed the BABA train, it's time to grab your tickets and climb aboard, and if you purchased BABA during its run to $300 or early 2021 rebound, it might be time to add to your holdings. BABA is going to experience tremendous tailwinds from China's population and economic growth over the next several years, and their printing press is going to need more ink.
\n
(Source: Alibaba)
\n
The Alibaba printing press is open for business, and it spits out billions
\n
How many companies can say their annual revenue through the pandemic exceeded $100 billion? The $100 billion revenue mark is a prestigious club that companies such as Facebook (FB),PepsiCo (PEP),Procter & Gamble (PG),Target (TGT), and Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) are not part of. BABA, on the other hand, witnessed its revenue increase by 52.11% and smash through $100 billion as they generated $109.47 billion in their recent fiscal year. For the year ending March 2019, BABA's revenue increased by $16.25 billion (40.74%) to $56.15 billion, then for the March 2020 fiscal year, revenue increased another $15.82 billion (28.17%) to $71.97 billion. BABA is in the same boat as Alphabet(NASDAQ:GOOG)(GOOGL), FB, and Amazon (AMZN) as they watched the pandemic push more people to go digital which accelerated their businesses. For BABA, the forced transition to digital helped them achieve $37.5 billion (52.11%) in additional revenue as they finished their March 2021 fiscal year with $109.47 billion in revenue.
\n
Since 2013 BABA has not had a year where their annual revenue increase didn't exceed 25% Year over Year (YoY). When you think about that as a growth rate, it's remarkable for a company of BABA's size as this isn't a company chasing its first billion-dollar revenue year. Over the past 5 fiscal years, BABA's annual revenue has increased by $93.8 billion (408.08%) at an average annual rate of 48.25%. Smaller companies considered growth companies would be jealous of these rates, while many large caps are probably envious.
\n
BABA isn't a one-trick pony that can only generate tens of billions in revenue. BABA can convert right down to the bottom line. Each year BABA has increased its YoY gross profit by a minimum of 10% since 2013. In 2016 BABA generated $10.35 billion in gross profit and, over the next 5 fiscal years, increased its annual gross profit by $34.84 billion (336.68%). BABA has also never fallen below a 40% gross profit margin, Warren Buffett's magic number, as he indicates inWarren Buffett and the Interpretation of Financial Statements. On page 34 of the Kindle edition,it says:
\n
\n As a very general rule (and there are exceptions): Companies with gross profit margins of 40% or better tend to be companies with some sort of durable competitive advantage. Companies with gross profit margins below 40% tend to be companies in highly competitive industries, where competition is hurting overall profit margins (there are exceptions here, too).\n
\n
The gross profit margin is important for investors to evaluate because it reveals how much of a company's revenue goes directly to producing it and if they have a moat around their business. BABA's numbers indicate they have a sufficient moat around their business that is hard to penetrate. With close to a decade of generating over 40% in gross profit margins, investors can expect that BABA's moat will protect its business operations for years to come.
\n
Moving to the bottom line BABA does a great job at generating profits. In their most recent fiscal year, BABA generated $22.98 billion in net income, converting more than 1/5th (20.99%) of their revenue to pure profits. Since 2013 BABA has only had 1 year where net income decreases YoY. With that track record, many options open up for BABA in the future as their cash stockpile continues to increase.
\n
(Source: Alibaba)
\n
Alibaba will continue to experience tailwinds as China's population and economy expands
\n
Alibaba achieved one billion annual active consumers globally in the fiscal year that ended in March 2021. BABA has 891 million consumers across China's retail marketplace, local consumer services and digital media and entertainment platforms, and approximately 240 million consumers outside China. BABA's annual active consumers in the China retail marketplaces were 811 million as it grew by 85 million YoY. BABA will focus on developing a digital commerce infrastructure that offers an upgraded consumer experience by seamlessly integrating online and offline. Through BABA's infrastructure, countless retailers have digitally transformed their businesses and created multiple retail formats that have enabled new consumption experiences by leveraging consumer insights and technology. BABA's ecosystem, supply chain, and diversified fulfillment services have facilitated an immense digital transformation. By investing in its infrastructure, BABA's customers can now leverage a full range of high-frequency fulfillment services that include on-demand delivery, same-or-next day delivery, and next-day pick-up services for a full range of consumable and physical products.
\n
BABA will continue to be one of the cornerstones that supports growth within China's economy, which is benefiting from the acceleration of digitalization in all aspects of life and work. China is projected to be the world's largest economy by 2028. The per-capita income in China is expected to grow by roughly 50% from 2020 to 2025.China's average economic growth has been projected to increase at a rate of 5.7% from 2021 to 2025, then slow to 4.5% from 2026 to 2030. As a result,China is on track to join the top 1/3rd of nations and overtake 56 countries in the per capita income rankings by 2025. By the end of 2022, McKinsey predicts that the middle class could expand to 550 million people which is larger than the entire U.S population.
\n
If the projections for China are correct, this should mean a windfall of cash lining BABA's coffers. It's a simple recipe; when people make more money, they tend to spend more money to enhance their lives and increase their standard of living. As BABA is a dominant force in China's retail sector, they stand to benefit from a growing economy and a larger middle class. At the end of next year, if China has anywhere close to 550 million individuals in the middle class, I believe BABA's revenue and profits will increase significantly. This trend can provide tailwinds throughout the decade for BABA, and eventually, the market will reward shareholders based on BABA's value proposition.
\n
(Source: Blomberg)
\n
Alibaba has tremendous growth prospects in Cloud as China continues its digitization
\n
Cloud computing has been red hot in the U.S. as the transition from on-prem to cloud has increased the technological capabilities for many organizations. As digitization progresses across the business landscape, cloud providers continue to increase revenue generated from their cloud segments within their overall revenue mix. For example, AWS, the cloud computing division from AMZN, generated $45.37 billion in 2020. Cloud continues to be an exciting sector because the digital transformation is far from being over. Hence, the prospects of new customers are enormous while reoccurring revenue is generated after the transition occurs.
\n
In China, cloud infrastructure services are still in the early innings as the entire spend was around $15 billion in 2020. In Q1 of 2021, cloud infrastructure services in China grew by 55% YoY as it reached $6 billion. China was the 2nd largest market behind the U.S, accounting for 14% of global investment, up from 12% in Q1 of 2020. With cloud spending and digitization in China increasing, this serves as a major runway for growth in Alibaba Cloud.
\n
As China's economy expands, businesses will need to become more efficient to support both operations and customer demands. Chinese companies will need to implement infrastructure that can support a digital age of the workforce while supporting cloud services used by consumers for consumption. If China passes the U.S. as the world's largest economy in the second half of this decade, the amount of growth needed in cloud services will be immense. BABA is already the leader in cloud infrastructure services in China as their 39.8% market share accounted for $2.39 billion of the $6 billion spent in Q1 2021. Over the previous 6 quarters, cloud infrastructure spending has increased by roughly $2.3 billion (76.67%) in China. Based on cloud's current trajectory, quarterly revenue is on track to double over the next 2 years, putting Q1 2023 revenue at $10.6 billion. If BABA has a 35% market share, their Q1 2023 would be $3.71 billion, placing their 2023 revenue for cloud at $14.84 billion without factoring in any growth in 2023. From a cloud aspect, China's future spending is very exciting, and BABA will be one of the major benefactors.
\n
(Source: Canalys)
\n
Alibaba has stellar financial metrics and is undervalued compared to the U.S. tech conglomerates
\n
For this comparison, I am going to use AMZN and GOOGL as they have been establishing their dominance in the U.S. for more than a decade. First, here are the raw numbers for AMZN, BABA, and GOOGL:
\n
\n
AMZN
\n
BABA
\n
GOOGL
\n
\n
The market currently places a multiple of 17.03x on AMZN's equity compared to its market cap, while its revenue multiple is 4.2x. GOOGL has a multiple of 7.17x on its equity and 8.39x on its revenue compared to market cap. AMZN and GOOGL's market caps exceed $1.5 trillion, while BABA's sits at $575.57 billion. The market is placing a 3.5x multiple on BABA's equity and 5.26x on its revenue compared to the market cap. Thus, the market is severely discounting BABA's equity and revenue generation. BABA's equity is worth 28.58% of its market cap, while AMZN's equity is equivalent to 5.87%, and GOOGL's is 13.94% of its market cap. The current discount placed on BABA's equity could create an additional tailwind for shareholders in the future.
\n
Conclusion
\n
It's hard to dismiss the growth opportunities some companies in China are presenting, especially after the recent decline in share prices. However, I believe shares of BABA are currently undervalued based on their current financial metrics and growth rates. China's economy and the amount of capital allocated to cloud service infrastructure are expected to grow substantially over the years. Many companies faced adversity throughout the pandemic, and some are still recovering, but not BABA. Through the worst economic environment for businesses to navigate in recent times, BABA generated over $100 billion in revenue and $20 billion in net income during their recent fiscal year. While BABA didn't get the memo about businesses facing challenges amidst the pandemic, the market must not have read BABA's earnings report or crunched the numbers.\nThere are two Chinese companies I am bullish on, and BABA is my biggest conviction for appreciation. BABA is going to experience tremendous tailwinds from China's population and economic growth over the next several years, and their printing press is going to need more ink.\n(Source: Alibaba)\nThe Alibaba printing press is open for business, and it spits out billions\nHow many companies can say their annual revenue through the pandemic exceeded $100 billion? For BABA, the forced transition to digital helped them achieve $37.5 billion (52.11%) in additional revenue as they finished their March 2021 fiscal year with $109.47 billion in revenue.\nSince 2013 BABA has not had a year where their annual revenue increase didn't exceed 25% Year over Year (YoY). Smaller companies considered growth companies would be jealous of these rates, while many large caps are probably envious.\nBABA isn't a one-trick pony that can only generate tens of billions in revenue. On page 34 of the Kindle edition,it says:\n\n As a very general rule (and there are exceptions): Companies with gross profit margins of 40% or better tend to be companies with some sort of durable competitive advantage. Companies with gross profit margins below 40% tend to be companies in highly competitive industries, where competition is hurting overall profit margins (there are exceptions here, too).\n\nThe gross profit margin is important for investors to evaluate because it reveals how much of a company's revenue goes directly to producing it and if they have a moat around their business. BABA's numbers indicate they have a sufficient moat around their business that is hard to penetrate. With close to a decade of generating over 40% in gross profit margins, investors can expect that BABA's moat will protect its business operations for years to come.\nMoving to the bottom line BABA does a great job at generating profits. In their most recent fiscal year, BABA generated $22.98 billion in net income, converting more than 1/5th (20.99%) of their revenue to pure profits. Since 2013 BABA has only had 1 year where net income decreases YoY. With that track record, many options open up for BABA in the future as their cash stockpile continues to increase.\n(Source: Alibaba)\nAlibaba will continue to experience tailwinds as China's population and economy expands\nAlibaba achieved one billion annual active consumers globally in the fiscal year that ended in March 2021. By investing in its infrastructure, BABA's customers can now leverage a full range of high-frequency fulfillment services that include on-demand delivery, same-or-next day delivery, and next-day pick-up services for a full range of consumable and physical products.\nBABA will continue to be one of the cornerstones that supports growth within China's economy, which is benefiting from the acceleration of digitalization in all aspects of life and work. By the end of 2022, McKinsey predicts that the middle class could expand to 550 million people which is larger than the entire U.S population.\nIf the projections for China are correct, this should mean a windfall of cash lining BABA's coffers. This trend can provide tailwinds throughout the decade for BABA, and eventually, the market will reward shareholders based on BABA's value proposition.\n(Source: Blomberg)\nAlibaba has tremendous growth prospects in Cloud as China continues its digitization\nCloud computing has been red hot in the U.S. as the transition from on-prem to cloud has increased the technological capabilities for many organizations. Hence, the prospects of new customers are enormous while reoccurring revenue is generated after the transition occurs.\nIn China, cloud infrastructure services are still in the early innings as the entire spend was around $15 billion in 2020. In Q1 of 2021, cloud infrastructure services in China grew by 55% YoY as it reached $6 billion. China was the 2nd largest market behind the U.S, accounting for 14% of global investment, up from 12% in Q1 of 2020. With cloud spending and digitization in China increasing, this serves as a major runway for growth in Alibaba Cloud.\nAs China's economy expands, businesses will need to become more efficient to support both operations and customer demands. From a cloud aspect, China's future spending is very exciting, and BABA will be one of the major benefactors.\n(Source: Canalys)\nAlibaba has stellar financial metrics and is undervalued compared to the U.S. tech conglomerates\nFor this comparison, I am going to use AMZN and GOOGL as they have been establishing their dominance in the U.S. for more than a decade. First, here are the raw numbers for AMZN, BABA, and GOOGL:\n\nAMZN\nBABA\nGOOGL\n\nThe market currently places a multiple of 17.03x on AMZN's equity compared to its market cap, while its revenue multiple is 4.2x. The current discount placed on BABA's equity could create an additional tailwind for shareholders in the future.\nConclusion\nIt's hard to dismiss the growth opportunities some companies in China are presenting, especially after the recent decline in share prices. However, I believe shares of BABA are currently undervalued based on their current financial metrics and growth rates. China's economy and the amount of capital allocated to cloud service infrastructure are expected to grow substantially over the years. These will create powerful tailwinds for BABA throughout this decade. As a result, I think shareholders have been allowed to establish a BABA or dollar cost average position at a discounted price. I plan on continuing to add shares to my position while the market is discounting BABA.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":502,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":121176905,"gmtCreate":1624457647407,"gmtModify":1703837348786,"author":{"id":"3575263658083707","authorId":"3575263658083707","name":"yusl","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e2599b870433e6b8995b17759d072bd6","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Crypto has not crashed yet. This fact has boosted demand for graphics cards, contributing to shortages and high prices.\n\nImage source: Getty Images.\nNVIDIA sells some models specifically aimed at cryptocurrency miners, but miners are also buying plenty of standard graphics cards through the same channels used by PC gamers. This makes it difficult to tell how much of NVIDIA's gaming revenue is a side-effect of the cryptocurrency bubble. NVIDIA's gaming revenue more than doubled year-over-year to $2.76 billion in its latest quarter.\nWhat happens if crypto prices continue to crash? It wasn't pretty for NVIDIA last time around.\nFrom shortage to supply glut\nThe price of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies soared throughout 2017 and early 2018. Miners snapped up graphics cards, leading to shortages and high prices. Sound familiar?\nNVIDIA's quarterly gaming revenue held steady at around $1.8 billion through the third quarter of fiscal 2019, which ended in October of 2018. Then it fell off a cliff as interest in cryptocurrency waned. Gaming revenue crashed below $1 billion in the fiscal fourth quarter of that year.\n\nChart by author. Data source: NVIDIA.\nThe crypto crash of 2018 led to bloated channel inventories of graphics cards, which reduced NVIDIA's sales dramatically. Gaming revenue was depressed for about three quarters before bouncing back.\n\"Crypto mining demand and its after effects have distorted the quarter-to-quarter trends in the gaming business and obscured its underlying trend line,\" NVIDIA CFO Colette Kress said during the Q4 2019 earnings call.\nKress continued: \"...with the benefit of hindsight, we shipped a higher amount of desktop gaming products relative to where end demand turned out to be.\"\nWhat's happening now is a turbocharged version of what happened in 2018. The total value of the cryptocurrency market at the peak this time around was far higher than in 2018, topping $2 trillion in April.\nActual shipments of graphics cards were up 24.4% in the first quarter on a year-over-year basis, according to Jon Peddie Research. The total value of those cards soared 370% thanks to inflated prices. Some of this demand has undoubtedly been driven by the pandemic, but a big chunk is tied to the fortunes of the cryptocurrency market.\nJust like NVIDIA's gaming revenue, NVIDIA stock was hit hard by the last crypto crash. Shares tanked in the final three months of 2018 as the extent of NVIDIA's dependence on crypto miners demand became clear.\n\nNVDA data by YCharts\nNVIDIA stock has once again surged amid a cryptocurrency boom and shortages of graphics cards. The company is now worth about $460 billion, about triple its peak value during the last cryptocurrency bubble. NVIDIA has made strides outside of gaming since then, particularly in the data center. But a big drop in revenue is possible, and perhaps likely, if crypto prices keep tumbling.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":199,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":129182533,"gmtCreate":1624365240022,"gmtModify":1703834451706,"author":{"id":"3575263658083707","authorId":"3575263658083707","name":"yusl","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e2599b870433e6b8995b17759d072bd6","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Tiger Brokers(TIGR)$ hope The Tiger wake up today! Finale","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1156471121","media":"InvestorPlace","summary":"These seven stocks are looking to rebound this summer as people return to seeing films in theaters.\n","content":"
\n These seven stocks are looking to rebound this summer as people return to seeing films in theaters.\n
\n
The epic rally inAMC Entertainment(NYSE:AMC) stock has a lot of people fatigued. And like allmeme stock rallies, the latest one involving movie theatre chain AMC is likely to end in spectacular fashion. In one week, AMC stock rallied 157% higher, dropped 33% and then rose again by 25%.
\n
It’s been quite the rollercoaster. And what has driven the #AMCArmy of retail investors to push the share price sky high has been the fact that the world’s largest movie theatre chain was brought to theedge of bankruptcyby the Covid-19 pandemic. That, and the stock has been one of the most heavily shorted on Wall Street this year.
\n
But AMC’s problems are not unique. The entire movie industry, from production to exhibition, has beendevastated by the pandemicand many companies have struggled just like AMC.
\n
Here are seven movie stocks ready for the #AMCArmy finale.
\n
\n
Cineplex(OTCMKTS:CPXGF)
\n
Walt Disney(NYSE:DIS)
\n
Lions Gate Entertainment(NYSE:LGF.A)
\n
Netflix(NASDAQ:NFLX)
\n
Cinemark Holdings(NYSE:CNK)
\n
IMAX(NYSE:IMAX)
\n
Marcus Corporation(NYSE:MCS)
\n
\n
Movie Stocks: Cineplex (CPXGF)Source: Shutterstock
\n
Toronto-based Cineplex, which operates more than 165 movie theatres across Canada, has been in business since Charlie Chaplin was making silent pictures. And, like AMC and other movie theatre chains, Cineplex has had a tough go of it during the pandemic.
\n
CPXGFstock is now tradingat $13.48 a share, about half the $25.41 it was at in February 2020 before Covid-19 landed. The share price had been as low as $3.30 a share last October after the company reported its quarterly revenue plunged 95%.
\n
In addition to having its theatres shuttered for nearly a year and reopened with capacity limits, Cineplex has had to cope with a litany of other problems. First, Britain’s Cineworld Group backed out of adeal to acquire Cineplexfor $2.18 billion, a deal that would have made the merged companies the biggest operator of movie theaters in North America. Then, the company’s stock was removed fromCanada’s benchmark stock index, theS&P/TSX Composite Index, and it was forced to sell its its head office in Toronto for $57 million CAD ($47 million) in order to raise cash to pay down debt.
\n
At last check, Cineplex was negotiating toreceive relief from its creditorsas it eagerly awaits the start of the summer movie season.
\n
Walt Disney (DIS)Source: Shutterstock
\n
DIS stock has had a great run over the past year, propped up by the meteoric rise of the company’s Disney+ streaming service. The Walt Disney streaming service that is home to popular film and television franchises such as Star Wars, Marvel superheroes and Pixar animation grew to103.6 million subscriberswithin 18 months of launching and kept the Mouse House afloat during the pandemic while its theme parks and cruise lines were closed.
\n
However, the shine has come off DIS stock recently over concerns that growth in the company’s streaming service will now begin to slow.
\n
However, asa diversified company, Walt Disney should perform well as its theme parks around the world reopen this summer, its cruises set sail again, and it begins developing new content for the Disney+ platform. And, the company hopes to keep its growth in streaming robust by bundling Disney+ with other content offerings that include the sports-related ESPN Plus platform and movies and TV shows offered through Hulu, both of which Disney owns. With so much diversification, it likely won’t be long before DIS stock recovers and tests new highs.
\n
DIS stock is currently at $176.81, down 13% from its 52-week high of $203.02 a share reached in March.
\n
Lions Gate Entertainment (LGF.A)Source: ©iStock.com/diego_cervo
\n
Lions Gate Entertainment is a producer of popular films and TV programs, including theHunger Games,John WickandSawmovie franchises and the Emmy Award-winning TV seriesMad Men. The company that started life in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1997, Lions Gate is today headquartered in Santa Monica, California. Coming out of the pandemic, CEO Jon Feltheimer islooking to be acquiredby a larger studio.
\n
Investment bankLoop Capitalhas put a price target on Lions Gate of $8 billion and said any acquirer would get arich catalogueof content that also includes theJohn WickandExpendablesmovie series, as well as TV shows such asNurse Jackie,NashvilleandWeeds. However, this isn’t the first time that Lions Gate hasput out a ‘for sale’ sign. The company held talks in 2018 withAmazon(NASDAQ:AMZN) andComcast(NASDAQ:CMCSA)about a possible acquisition, though nothing ultimately came from the discussions.
\n
LGF.A stock has had a strong run, up 82% year-to-date to $20.21 a share.
\n
Netflix (NFLX)Source: Riccosta / Shutterstock.com
\n
NFLX stock has beenunder pressurelately as fears grow that the boost the company received during the pandemic is over. Netflix’s most recent earnings results did nothing to ease the fears of Wall Street. The Silicon Valley-based streaming giant reported on April 20 that it added 3.98 million subscribers in the first quarter, missing Wall Street’s estimate of 6.29 million subscribers and its own forecast of 6 million.
\n
The current quarter looks even worse with Netflix forecasting only a million new customers worldwide, less than a quarter of the 4.44 million forecast by analysts.
\n
To be fair, Netflix is largely a victim of its own success. After adding more than20 million new subscriberslast year (2020), growth was bound to level off at some point. Today, Netflix has nearly 208 million subscribers worldwide. Netflix’s subscriber growth has also been hurt by a lack of new content as TV and movie productions were halted during the pandemic.
\n
The company hopes to release a glut of new content later this year and is targeting Asia, where subscriptions grew 65% last year, for continued growth.
\n
NFLX stock has fallen 11.6% since its last quarterly results release and now trades at $485.81 a share.
\n
Cinemark Holdings (CNK)Source: LukeandKarla.Travel/Shutterstock.com
\n
Another major U.S. movie theatre chain besides AMC is Plano, Texas-based Cinemark Holdings. Founded in 1961, Cinemark operates movie theatres under several brands, including Cinemark, Century Theatres and Tinseltown. The company is also global with operations as far afield as Taiwan and Brazil. At its current price of $23.21 a share,CNK stockis currently at about half the $40 a share it was trading at in the summer before the global pandemic.
\n
Cinemark Holdingsrevenue got hammeredover the past year as its theatres around the world were shut. Revenues for 2020 came in at $700 million, down 80% from $3.3 billion in 2019. Losses for last year came in at record $5.25 per share.
\n
Things are beginning to improve as Covid-19 vaccination rates accelerate and with aslate of blockbuster movieson deck for the coming summer months. However, currently the majority of Cinemark Holdings theatres are operating at 50% capacity as pandemic restrictions remain in place in most jurisdictions.
\n
IMAX (IMAX)Source: imageAllan / Shutterstock.com
\n
Canadian theatre company IMAX Corporation, which makes giant movie screens and the films that are shown on them, is another company that will be glad to see both the pandemic and the AMC stock rally end.
\n
Investment bankGoldman Sachs(NYSE:GS) recentlydowngraded IMAX stockto “sell” from “neutral” and lowered its 12-month price target on the shares to $18.60, which would be a 16% drop from the current share price of $22.04.
\n
Goldman forecasts that the U.S. box office will only recover to about three-quarters of its pre-pandemic levels, noting that movie theater attendance had been in decline before the pandemic. The bank also warned that a glut of new theatrical releases will lead new movies to cannibalize each other this summer.
\n
Despite the negative sentiment, IMAX remains hopeful. Pre-sales of the IMAX version of the upcomingFast & Furiousfilm (the ninth in that series) recentlyset a record in China, one of IMAX’s biggest markets globally.
\n
Marcus Corp. (MCS)Source: Shutterstock
\n
Regional operator Marcus Corp. is the fourth-largest movie theatre operator in America. Its1,110 screensare primarily located in Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota and Nebraska. And like allmeme stock rallies, the latest one involving movie theatre chain AMC is likely to end in spectacular fashion. In one week, AMC stock rallied 157% higher, dropped 33% and then rose again by 25%.\nIt’s been quite the rollercoaster. And what has driven the #AMCArmy of retail investors to push the share price sky high has been the fact that the world’s largest movie theatre chain was brought to theedge of bankruptcyby the Covid-19 pandemic. That, and the stock has been one of the most heavily shorted on Wall Street this year.\nBut AMC’s problems are not unique. The entire movie industry, from production to exhibition, has beendevastated by the pandemicand many companies have struggled just like AMC.\nHere are seven movie stocks ready for the #AMCArmy finale.\n\nCineplex(OTCMKTS:CPXGF)\nWalt Disney(NYSE:DIS)\nLions Gate Entertainment(NYSE:LGF.A)\nNetflix(NASDAQ:NFLX)\nCinemark Holdings(NYSE:CNK)\nIMAX(NYSE:IMAX)\nMarcus Corporation(NYSE:MCS)\n\nMovie Stocks: Cineplex (CPXGF)Source: Shutterstock\nToronto-based Cineplex, which operates more than 165 movie theatres across Canada, has been in business since Charlie Chaplin was making silent pictures. And, like AMC and other movie theatre chains, Cineplex has had a tough go of it during the pandemic.\nCPXGFstock is now tradingat $13.48 a share, about half the $25.41 it was at in February 2020 before Covid-19 landed. The share price had been as low as $3.30 a share last October after the company reported its quarterly revenue plunged 95%.\nIn addition to having its theatres shuttered for nearly a year and reopened with capacity limits, Cineplex has had to cope with a litany of other problems. First, Britain’s Cineworld Group backed out of adeal to acquire Cineplexfor $2.18 billion, a deal that would have made the merged companies the biggest operator of movie theaters in North America. Then, the company’s stock was removed fromCanada’s benchmark stock index, theS&P/TSX Composite Index, and it was forced to sell its its head office in Toronto for $57 million CAD ($47 million) in order to raise cash to pay down debt.\nAt last check, Cineplex was negotiating toreceive relief from its creditorsas it eagerly awaits the start of the summer movie season.\nWalt Disney (DIS)Source: Shutterstock\nDIS stock has had a great run over the past year, propped up by the meteoric rise of the company’s Disney+ streaming service. The Walt Disney streaming service that is home to popular film and television franchises such as Star Wars, Marvel superheroes and Pixar animation grew to103.6 million subscriberswithin 18 months of launching and kept the Mouse House afloat during the pandemic while its theme parks and cruise lines were closed.\nHowever, the shine has come off DIS stock recently over concerns that growth in the company’s streaming service will now begin to slow.\nHowever, asa diversified company, Walt Disney should perform well as its theme parks around the world reopen this summer, its cruises set sail again, and it begins developing new content for the Disney+ platform. And, the company hopes to keep its growth in streaming robust by bundling Disney+ with other content offerings that include the sports-related ESPN Plus platform and movies and TV shows offered through Hulu, both of which Disney owns. With so much diversification, it likely won’t be long before DIS stock recovers and tests new highs.\nDIS stock is currently at $176.81, down 13% from its 52-week high of $203.02 a share reached in March.\nLions Gate Entertainment (LGF.A)Source: ©iStock.com/diego_cervo\nLions Gate Entertainment is a producer of popular films and TV programs, including theHunger Games,John WickandSawmovie franchises and the Emmy Award-winning TV seriesMad Men. The company that started life in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1997, Lions Gate is today headquartered in Santa Monica, California. Coming out of the pandemic, CEO Jon Feltheimer islooking to be acquiredby a larger studio.\nInvestment bankLoop Capitalhas put a price target on Lions Gate of $8 billion and said any acquirer would get arich catalogueof content that also includes theJohn WickandExpendablesmovie series, as well as TV shows such asNurse Jackie,NashvilleandWeeds. However, this isn’t the first time that Lions Gate hasput out a ‘for sale’ sign. The company held talks in 2018 withAmazon(NASDAQ:AMZN) andComcast(NASDAQ:CMCSA)about a possible acquisition, though nothing ultimately came from the discussions.\nLGF.A stock has had a strong run, up 82% year-to-date to $20.21 a share.\nNetflix (NFLX)Source: Riccosta / Shutterstock.com\nNFLX stock has beenunder pressurelately as fears grow that the boost the company received during the pandemic is over. Netflix’s most recent earnings results did nothing to ease the fears of Wall Street. The Silicon Valley-based streaming giant reported on April 20 that it added 3.98 million subscribers in the first quarter, missing Wall Street’s estimate of 6.29 million subscribers and its own forecast of 6 million.\nThe current quarter looks even worse with Netflix forecasting only a million new customers worldwide, less than a quarter of the 4.44 million forecast by analysts.\nTo be fair, Netflix is largely a victim of its own success. After adding more than20 million new subscriberslast year (2020), growth was bound to level off at some point. Today, Netflix has nearly 208 million subscribers worldwide. Netflix’s subscriber growth has also been hurt by a lack of new content as TV and movie productions were halted during the pandemic.\nThe company hopes to release a glut of new content later this year and is targeting Asia, where subscriptions grew 65% last year, for continued growth.\nNFLX stock has fallen 11.6% since its last quarterly results release and now trades at $485.81 a share.\nCinemark Holdings (CNK)Source: LukeandKarla.Travel/Shutterstock.com\nAnother major U.S. movie theatre chain besides AMC is Plano, Texas-based Cinemark Holdings. Founded in 1961, Cinemark operates movie theatres under several brands, including Cinemark, Century Theatres and Tinseltown. The company is also global with operations as far afield as Taiwan and Brazil. At its current price of $23.21 a share,CNK stockis currently at about half the $40 a share it was trading at in the summer before the global pandemic.\nCinemark Holdingsrevenue got hammeredover the past year as its theatres around the world were shut. Revenues for 2020 came in at $700 million, down 80% from $3.3 billion in 2019. Losses for last year came in at record $5.25 per share.\nThings are beginning to improve as Covid-19 vaccination rates accelerate and with aslate of blockbuster movieson deck for the coming summer months. However, currently the majority of Cinemark Holdings theatres are operating at 50% capacity as pandemic restrictions remain in place in most jurisdictions.\nIMAX (IMAX)Source: imageAllan / Shutterstock.com\nCanadian theatre company IMAX Corporation, which makes giant movie screens and the films that are shown on them, is another company that will be glad to see both the pandemic and the AMC stock rally end.\nInvestment bankGoldman Sachs(NYSE:GS) recentlydowngraded IMAX stockto “sell” from “neutral” and lowered its 12-month price target on the shares to $18.60, which would be a 16% drop from the current share price of $22.04.\nGoldman forecasts that the U.S. box office will only recover to about three-quarters of its pre-pandemic levels, noting that movie theater attendance had been in decline before the pandemic. The bank also warned that a glut of new theatrical releases will lead new movies to cannibalize each other this summer.\nDespite the negative sentiment, IMAX remains hopeful. Pre-sales of the IMAX version of the upcomingFast & Furiousfilm (the ninth in that series) recentlyset a record in China, one of IMAX’s biggest markets globally.\nMarcus Corp. (MCS)Source: Shutterstock\nRegional operator Marcus Corp. is the fourth-largest movie theatre operator in America. Its1,110 screensare primarily located in Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota and Nebraska. The Milwaukee, Wisconsin-based company also owns 17 hotels and resorts in the Midwest, as well as California and Texas.\nThe company’s first-quarter revenue came in at $50.8 million, 69% less than last year’s comparable revenue of $159.5 million.\nHowever, Marcus’ cash position remains strong, with the company reporting cash reserves of $213 million at the end ofthis year’ first quarter. Still, the pandemic has taken a toll on Marcus’ business and share price. MCS stock has traded as low as $6.84 and as high as $24.71 over the past year. The share price now stands at $22.57.\nIn early May, Marcus reported thatnearly 90% of theatreshad reopened and that it was expanding its operating days and hours as new movies begin to be released theatrically.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":158,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[{"author":{"id":"3578111079453218","authorId":"3578111079453218","name":"jeff123","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d2c71145c4a9a4565a59fc5476086738","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0},"content":"Waiting impatiently [Miser], [Miser]","text":"Waiting impatiently [Miser], [Miser]","html":"Waiting impatiently [Miser], [Miser]"}],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"hots":[{"id":155367754,"gmtCreate":1625377729878,"gmtModify":1703741043598,"author":{"id":"3575263658083707","authorId":"3575263658083707","name":"yusl","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e2599b870433e6b8995b17759d072bd6","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Tide turning soon","listText":"Tide turning soon","text":"Tide turning soon","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":3,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/155367754","repostId":"1165340887","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":184,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":124952944,"gmtCreate":1624722832188,"gmtModify":1703844132790,"author":{"id":"3575263658083707","authorId":"3575263658083707","name":"yusl","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e2599b870433e6b8995b17759d072bd6","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Torchlight Energy Resources(TRCH)$ looking for a green sign next week","listText":"$Torchlight Energy Resources(TRCH)$ looking for a green sign next week","text":"$Torchlight Energy Resources(TRCH)$ looking for a green sign next week","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/dfbdf20f45cfebdba36ac5c0a28c4417","width":"1080","height":"1920"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":6,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/124952944","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1008,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":146809074,"gmtCreate":1626063041498,"gmtModify":1703752626117,"author":{"id":"3575263658083707","authorId":"3575263658083707","name":"yusl","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e2599b870433e6b8995b17759d072bd6","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Up n up. But has AMZN been the best Big Tech player at producing alpha? The Amazon Maven faces off six mega-cap stocks.

A few days ago, the Amazon Maven explained howa mere $100 monthly investment in Amazon stock (AMZN) -Get Report since the company’s 1997 IPO would have led to riches: $2.7 million today. It is hard to imagine a methodical, long-term investment having performed as well as this one.

But has AMZN shares created the most alpha within the mega-cap tech universe? Could investors have done much better by betting on names like Apple (AAPL) or Microsoft (MSFT) instead?

What is alpha?

First, it helps to look closer at the concept of alpha. Generally, alpha is thought to be the returns that an investor can earn in excess of a benchmark. In other words: how much has a stock or portfolio risen relative to the S&P 500 or the Nasdaq? Investopediasummarizesas follows:

Alpha (α) is a term used in investing to describe an investment strategy's ability to beat the market, or its ‘edge’. Alpha is also referred to as ‘excess return’ or ‘abnormal rate of return’.

To me, this is a good start. But alpha should also consider one crucial factor: risk.

Beating the S&P 500 might simply mean higher sensitivity to market forces (i.e. beta). So, the better question is: how much return can a stock producerelative to risk. I believe that this is a more complete view of alpha.

Amazon stock vs. the rest

Considering absolute returns only, Amazon stock ranks remarkably high within Big Tech for historical share price performance. The chart below shows that, over the past 10 years, AMZN has only lagged Tesla (TSLA) in annualized gains.

Now, let me introduce risk to the equation. Risk is often defined (maybe too simplistically) as volatility. The more a stock rises and falls from minute to minute, or day to day, or week to week, the riskier it is.

So, one way to assess a stock’s returns relative to risk, thus giving us a better idea of its alpha potential, is to divide annualized returns by annualized volatility. By this methodology, Amazon stock loses its silver medal to Microsoft.

One takeaway here is that, over the past decade, Amazon has achieved higher returns than any other FAAMG stock, but not without exposing investors to more volatility. If history repeats, investors should expect high returns to come alongside relatively sharper ups and downs as well.

Another way to think about risk, one that I have favored recently, is to think about sizable losses. A good question to ask would be: how much has a stock produced in average annual returns relative to its worst trailing 12-month (TTM) performance?

Using this methodology, not only does Amazon stock lose its silver medal, but it also drops out of the podium altogether. See chart below, and notice that Facebook has also performed better than Amazon in the past ten years in loss-adjusted terms.

Figure 4: Ratio: Annualized return vs. Worst TTM return.

DM Martins Research

Amazon, in fact, has one of the worst track records within Big Tech when it comes to sharp losses. By November 2008, AMZN had seen 57% of its value evaporate over the previous year. Only Alphabet, around the same time, performed any worse than this.

The key takeaways for investors

Having said the above, I think that Amazon investors can learn a few lessons from this historical price action analysis:

Amazon has been a high-performing name, both since the IPO and over the past decade. In absolute terms, it is hard to find many stocks that have consistently delivered outsized returns.

Once risk is introduced to the discussion, Amazon stock’s performance goes from “outstanding” to a less exhilarating “solid”. Peers like Tesla, Microsoft and even Facebook seem to have been better alpha producers. But has AMZN been the best Big Tech player at producing alpha? The Amazon Maven faces off six mega-cap stocks.A few days ago, the Amazon Maven explained howa mere $100 monthly investment in Amazon stock (AMZN) -Get Report since the company’s 1997 IPO would have led to riches: $2.7 million today. It is hard to imagine a methodical, long-term investment having performed as well as this one.But has AMZN shares created the most alpha within the mega-cap tech universe? Could investors have done much better by betting on names like Apple (AAPL) or Microsoft (MSFT) instead? What is alpha?First, it helps to look closer at the concept of alpha. Generally, alpha is thought to be the returns that an investor can earn in excess of a benchmark. In other words: how much has a stock or portfolio risen relative to the S&P 500 or the Nasdaq? Investopediasummarizesas follows:Alpha (α) is a term used in investing to describe an investment strategy's ability to beat the market, or its ‘edge’. Alpha is also referred to as ‘excess return’ or ‘abnormal rate of return’.To me, this is a good start. But alpha should also consider one crucial factor: risk.Beating the S&P 500 might simply mean higher sensitivity to market forces (i.e. beta). So, the better question is: how much return can a stock producerelative to risk. I believe that this is a more complete view of alpha.Amazon stock vs. the restConsidering absolute returns only, Amazon stock ranks remarkably high within Big Tech for historical share price performance. The chart below shows that, over the past 10 years, AMZN has only lagged Tesla (TSLA) in annualized gains. Now, let me introduce risk to the equation. Risk is often defined (maybe too simplistically) as volatility. The more a stock rises and falls from minute to minute, or day to day, or week to week, the riskier it is.So, one way to assess a stock’s returns relative to risk, thus giving us a better idea of its alpha potential, is to divide annualized returns by annualized volatility. By this methodology, Amazon stock loses its silver medal to Microsoft. One takeaway here is that, over the past decade, Amazon has achieved higher returns than any other FAAMG stock, but not without exposing investors to more volatility. If history repeats, investors should expect high returns to come alongside relatively sharper ups and downs as well.Another way to think about risk, one that I have favored recently, is to think about sizable losses. A good question to ask would be: how much has a stock produced in average annual returns relative to its worst trailing 12-month (TTM) performance?Using this methodology, not only does Amazon stock lose its silver medal, but it also drops out of the podium altogether. See chart below, and notice that Facebook has also performed better than Amazon in the past ten years in loss-adjusted terms.Figure 4: Ratio: Annualized return vs. Worst TTM return.DM Martins ResearchAmazon, in fact, has one of the worst track records within Big Tech when it comes to sharp losses. By November 2008, AMZN had seen 57% of its value evaporate over the previous year. Only Alphabet, around the same time, performed any worse than this. The key takeaways for investorsHaving said the above, I think that Amazon investors can learn a few lessons from this historical price action analysis:Amazon has been a high-performing name, both since the IPO and over the past decade. In absolute terms, it is hard to find many stocks that have consistently delivered outsized returns.Once risk is introduced to the discussion, Amazon stock’s performance goes from “outstanding” to a less exhilarating “solid”. Peers like Tesla, Microsoft and even Facebook seem to have been better alpha producers. In the 10 years that preceded the pandemic, in fact, Amazon’s volatility-adjusted returns were about the same as the S&P 500’s.AMZN investors should understand that the stock could continue to produce outsized gains, but also endure higher volatility and sharper losses, as it has in the last decade or more.As always, past performance is not a guarantee of future results. Use history as a rough guide to set expectations, but understand that share price behavior can be quite different going forward.Twitter speaksPop quiz: relative to volatility (that is, in risk-adjusted terms), which of the following mega-cap tech stock has delivered the best returns in the past 10 year?
Smaller companies considered growth companies would be jealous of these rates, while many large caps are probably envious.\nBABA isn't a one-trick pony that can only generate tens of billions in revenue. By the end of 2022, McKinsey predicts that the middle class could expand to 550 million people which is larger than the entire U.S population.\nIf the projections for China are correct, this should mean a windfall of cash lining BABA's coffers. I plan on continuing to add shares to my position while the market is discounting BABA.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":502,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":187748903,"gmtCreate":1623765303102,"gmtModify":1703818678467,"author":{"id":"3575263658083707","authorId":"3575263658083707","name":"yusl","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e2599b870433e6b8995b17759d072bd6","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$BlackBerry(BB)$need more up side! As of this writing, the price of Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) has dipped below $30,000, erasing its gains for the year. Bitcoin is now down more than 50% from its all-time high.\nOther cryptocurrencies are doing even worse. Ethereum (CRYPTO:ETH) is down nearly 60% from its high, and joke cryptocurrency Dogecoin (CRYPTO:DOGE) has crashed 75%.\nGraphics chip developer NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA) has been one beneficiary of the crypto bubble. The company's graphics cards are useful for mining certain cryptocurrencies.
