We believe Alibaba and others in the e-commerce space, including JD.com (JD), will see demand tailwinds in 1H23. According to Pattern research, during the Chinese New Year, Chinese retail and e-commerce companies’ historical sales rose for “more than a decade until the COVID-19 pandemic struck in 2020.” We believe Chinese stocks will experience a rebound in sales this Chinese New Year as China’s economic slowdown becomes history. Sales of the Lunar New Year specialty, nianhuo, already surged 30% Y/Y on the company’s online retail platforms, Tmall and Taobao marketplace, in the first two weeks of January. Part of our bullish sentiment on Alibaba is based on our belief that domestic consumption will help revive the company’s revenue growth in 1H23.</p><p>Asian-Pacific’s leading index, the MSCI Asia Pacific index, already rose 7.2% this year as of February 9th, after declining 20% in 2022. In mid-January, the MSCI Asia Pacific Index grew nearly 21% from its 52-week low in October, according to data from Refinitiv. We believe this is a forward indicator that Chinese stocks are gradually entering a bull market, and we recommend investors buy Alibaba as an entry point into Chinese stocks.</p><p>We also believe Alibaba’s effort to launch a rival to ChatGPT is a good sign that the company’s headed in the right direction for long-term growth. The company will be among the latest in the tech space to join the chatbot bandwagon. Still, we believe Alibaba working internally on cutting-edge innovations within the generative AI space has the potential to be a long-term growth driver, as the generative AI market is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 27% between 2023-2032.</p><h3>Cloud is a slowly but surely long-term growth driver</h3><p>We like Alibaba’s position in the cloud-computing space and its steps to invest $1B in its Alibaba cloud segment, but we expect the company’s cloud business to face near-term headwinds. We’re constructive on Alibaba’s cloud segment as it competes with the top players in the cloud-computing space, mainly Microsoft’s (MSFT) Azure, Amazon’s (AMZN) AWS, and Alphabet’s Google Cloud. Our concern regarding Alibaba’s cloud segment is not due to any shortcomings from the company, but due to the weaker spending environment resulting from macroeconomic headwinds. We believe inflationary pressures and heightened interest rates have materialized, weaker IT spending from corporate customers. We believe corporations are stingier when allocating budgets during current macroeconomic headwinds, with Canalys reporting that cloud computing’s “annual growth rate fell below 30% for the first time” in 3Q22. Acquiring these locations is especially notable for our expansion in Connecticut, where we are more than doubling our presence,” Aron stated in the press release.</p><p>There’s no question moviegoers in Connecticut will benefit from an expanded AMC presence in the state, but that doesn’t mean shareholders should be thrilled with these purchases. Instead, it adds to the company’s significant debt.</p><p>The company’s most recent significant acquisition was Nordic Cinema Group in March 2017. It paid$964 million, including the assumption of $312.5 million of the Scandinavian company’s debt. That acquisition also included a 50% investment in another theatre chain with 50 theatres and 201 screens. That acquisition at the time had AMC operating 1,000 theatres worldwide.</p><p>Sure, covid-19 has definitely led to AMC shuttering some theaters, but an acquisition of seven versus approximately 93 just five years ago says a lot about how much the pandemic has drastically altered their capacity.</p><p>However, a big deal is that AMC already has plenty of movie theatres in both the U.S. and elsewhere. So it needs additional revenue streams, and I’m not talking about mining revenue.</p><p>I often make light of analyst stock ratings and target price projections in my commentaries. The reality, however, is that they spend significant hours creating financial models for the companies they cover, and more often than not, the earnings and revenue estimates are pretty darn close.</p><p>So, the fact that the highest target price for AMC stock is $6, $11.35 less than its current share price, says all you need to know about Wall Street’s view of the company.</p><p>Growing its footprint of theatres in the U.S. and elsewhere might appear to be a value-oriented proposition given how smaller theatre chains have suffered during covid-19. But it’s throwing good money after bad.</p><p>Adam Aron has to create new revenue streams that leverage its customer base. He doesn’t need more customers; he needs to make more money from his customers.</p><p>Analysts don’t see this happening. I second that opinion. Theatre acquisitions aren’t the solution. We believe Alibaba and others in the e-commerce space, including JD.com (JD), will see demand tailwinds in 1H23. According to Pattern research, during the Chinese New Year, Chinese retail and e-commerce companies’ historical sales rose for “more than a decade until the COVID-19 pandemic struck in 2020.” We believe Chinese stocks will experience a rebound in sales this Chinese New Year as China’s economic slowdown becomes history. Sales of the Lunar New Year specialty, nianhuo, already surged 30% Y/Y on the company’s online retail platforms, Tmall and Taobao marketplace, in the first two weeks of January. Part of our bullish sentiment on Alibaba is based on our belief that domestic consumption will help revive the company’s revenue growth in 1H23.</p><p>Asian-Pacific’s leading index, the MSCI Asia Pacific index, already rose 7.2% this year as of February 9th, after declining 20% in 2022. In mid-January, the MSCI Asia Pacific Index grew nearly 21% from its 52-week low in October, according to data from Refinitiv. We believe this is a forward indicator that Chinese stocks are gradually entering a bull market, and we recommend investors buy Alibaba as an entry point into Chinese stocks.</p><p>We also believe Alibaba’s effort to launch a rival to ChatGPT is a good sign that the company’s headed in the right direction for long-term growth. The company will be among the latest in the tech space to join the chatbot bandwagon. We believe Alibaba has a long way to go before competing meaningfully with OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Alphabet’s (GOOG) new “Bard” tool. Still, we believe Alibaba working internally on cutting-edge innovations within the generative AI space has the potential to be a long-term growth driver, as the generative AI market is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 27% between 2023-2032.</p><h3>Cloud is a slowly but surely long-term growth driver</h3><p>We like Alibaba’s position in the cloud-computing space and its steps to invest $1B in its Alibaba cloud segment, but we expect the company’s cloud business to face near-term headwinds. We’re constructive on Alibaba’s cloud segment as it competes with the top players in the cloud-computing space, mainly Microsoft’s (MSFT) Azure, Amazon’s (AMZN) AWS, and Alphabet’s Google Cloud. Our concern regarding Alibaba’s cloud segment is not due to any shortcomings from the company, but due to the weaker spending environment resulting from macroeconomic headwinds. We believe inflationary pressures and heightened interest rates have materialized, weaker IT spending from corporate customers. We believe corporations are stingier when allocating budgets during current macroeconomic headwinds, with Canalys reporting that cloud computing’s “annual growth rate fell below 30% for the first time” in 3Q22. We don’t believe Alibaba is immune to the weaker spending environment and expect the company’s cloud business to be pressured in the near term.</p><h3>Valuation &amp; Word on Wall Street</h3><p>We believe Alibaba’s stock is relatively cheap. But shorting can also lead to furious trading activity that can burn investors quickly.</p><p>Apple Inc. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AAPL\">$(AAPL)$</a> is now the most heavily shorted stock in terms of dollars committed to bets against the company&#39;s stock price. Tesla Inc. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/TSLA\">$(TSLA)$</a> had previously been in that position.</p><p>But in terms of short positions relative to the number of shares outstanding, Apple&#39;s is only 0.70% sold-short, while 2.32% of Tesla&#39;s share are shorted, according to the most recent data available from FactSet.</p><p>There are different ways of looking at short exposure, and a list of the most heavily shorted stocks among companies of the Russell 1000 Index , by percentage, is below.</p><p>Before digging into the short-selling data, let&#39;s review some terms:</p><ul><li>Short selling is when an investor borrows shares and immediately sells them, hoping to buy them back later at a lower price, return them to the lender and pocket the difference.</li><li>Covering is when a person with a short position buys the shares to return them to the lender, to profit if the shares have gone down in price since they were shorted, or to limit losses if they went up after being shorted.</li><li>A short squeeze is when a mass of investors looking to cover short positions start buying at the same time. The buying pushes the share price higher, making short investors accelerate their attempts to cover, which sends the shares spiraling higher in a frenzy. This is what happened earlier this year when a group of traders, who had organized themselves through the Reddit WallStreetBets channel, famously pushed the share prices of two troubled businesses sky-high: GameStop Corp. GME and AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc. AMC.</li></ul><p>Short selling is best left to professional investors and traders because you cannot set an upper limit on how much you might lose if the shares rise in price after you short them -- you never know how high a stock price might go. If you buy a stock (take a &#34;long&#34; position), what you have risked is the amount of money you invested. You can lose it all if company goes bankrupt, for example.</p><p>But to short a stock you need a margin account, which means your broker extends credit if the stock goes up in price after you short it. At a certain point, if the stock continues to rise, your broker will demand collateral to protect its position. This means you will be more likely to be forced to cover the short trade and take a loss.</p><p>Borrowing shares to short them also costs money -- more about that below.</p><h3>Most heavily shorted stocks</h3><p>The Russell 1000 Index is made up of the 1,000 largest companies in the Russell 3000 Index , which is designed to represent 98% of publicly traded companies whose primary stock listings are in the U.S.</p><p>Here are the 20 companies in the Russell 1000 that are most heavily shorted on a percentage basis, according to the most recent data available from FactSet:</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a16fa8b5fa3a932de6c2e2fd3e60597f\" tg-width=\"882\" tg-height=\"517\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4bd692e576602f8b1da716f6aa14bd0e\" tg-width=\"880\" tg-height=\"476\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/>The best-performing stock on the list this year has been Palo Alto Networks Inc. (PANW), whose presence on the list may be a surprise.</p><p>The company&#39;s rolling 12-month estimates for earnings and sales have been increasing and, on a calendar-year basis, the consensus expectation among analysts polled by FactSet is for its revenue to increase 28% in 2022.</p><p>From 2022 through 2024, analysts expect to see a compound annual growth rate of 21.6% for Palo Alto&#39;s sales. Maybe it is the high forward price-to-earnings ratio of 55.2 that has spooked investors.
