four cases of myocarditis -- a rare heart inflammation -- after administration of the shot in pivotal trials.

<img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e35c75ddf1f2382b864c1e2159b37fde\" said that it was unrelated to the placebo vaccination. almost upon us again.

The usual practice is forREITsto report their results first followed by the trio of local banks.

There is a change in the air, though.

Investors will be closely scrutinising this quarter’s REIT earnings amid an environment of high inflation and rising interest rates.

The purpose is to assess if REITs may be adversely affected by these new economic developments.

And if you are an income-seeking investor, you will be concerned about REITs’ ability to continue doling out distributions as costs increase.

REITs are well-known for being reliable dividend payers, and investors are naturally concerned if this dependability may be disrupted.

Here are three red flags you should watch out for when REITs report their results in the coming weeks.

Debt metrics

REITs are an asset class that relies heavily on borrowings to fund both their operations and acquisitions.

Hence, it’s no surprise that interest rates have a significant bearing on REITs’ financial costs and, in turn, their distributable income.

Investors need to look at each REIT’s debt metrics to assess how well it can cope with rising interest rates.

First off, you need to look at the REIT’s cost of debt.

A lower cost of debt ensures that the REIT has a bigger buffer in a rising interest rate environment.

Take Mapletree Logistics Trust(SGX: M44U), or MLT.

The logistics REIT sported a weighted average annualised cost of debt of 2.3% as of 30 June 2022.

Parkway Life REIT(SGX: C2PU) boasts an even lower cost of borrowing with its all-in debt cost of just 0.61%.

A REIT’s cost of debt has a lot to do with the foreign currency it can borrow in, and also whether it has a strong sponsor to assure banks that the REIT has a lower risk profile.

Contrast this to China-based Sasseur REIT(SGX: CRPU) which has a weighted average cost of debt of 4.5%.

Another important metric to look at is the proportion of fixed-rate debt within the REIT’s array of loans.

The higher this component, the more buffer it has when it comes to rising finance costs.

For MLT, 80% of its total debt is hedged or drawn in fixed rates.

Suburban retail REIT Frasers Centrepoint Trust(SGX: J69U), or FCT, has 69% of its total loans on fixed rates, while retail and commercial REIT CapitaLand Integrated Commercial Trust(SGX: C38U), or CICT, has 81% of its borrowings tied to fixed interest rates.

DPU sensitivity

Apart from debt metrics, REITs should also disclose the sensitivity of their distribution per unit (DPU) to the rise in base interest rates.

By doing so, investors can assess the approximate impact on the REIT’s distributions each time rates go up.

For CICT, every one percentage point rise in interest rates will lower DPU by S$0.0028.

The decline represents 2.7% of CICT’s trailing 12-month DPU of S$0.1044.

MLT estimates that a 0.25 percentage point increase in base interest rates will result in a S$0.0001 decline in DPU per quarter.

The decline is 0.4% of its fiscal 2023’s first quarter DPU of S$0.02268.

Frasers Logistics & Commercial Trust(SGX: BUOU) will witness a S$0.0005 fall in DPU for each 0.5 percentage point increase in interest rates for its variable rate loans.

This drop works out to be around 0.6% of the REIT’s annualised fiscal 2022’s first-half DPU of S$0.0385.

From the above examples, it’s easy to quantify the effects of rising interest rates on these REITs’ DPUs.

Although the recent surge in interest rates will result in across-the-board falls in DPU, REITs have various methods to mitigate this decline.

The impact of inflation

The third aspect to watch for is the effect of inflation on the operating expenses of the REIT.

Common property operating expenses include utilities, property management fees, marketing expenses, maintenance costs, and staff salaries.

There has already been news of a sharp jump in utility costs as electricity and gas expenses rose 23.9% year on year in August.

Labour costs are also expected to rise as employees demand higher salaries to cope with food and transport inflation.

These expenses will add up to reduce the distributable income for the REIT and is an area that investors should monitor in the coming quarters.

","source":"lsy1602567310727","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n<meta Sharrett/Bloomberg

Retail traders who lurk in forums like Reddit’s WallStreetBets are back to betting against Wall Street pros and the Federal Reserve as rallies for meme stocks like Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. and AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc. show shades of last year’s mania.

The home-good retailer nearly tripled at one point during its nine-day winning streak while the movie-theater firm capped a 65% rally of its own as speculative pockets of the stock market surge. The pair have powered a basket of 37 meme stocks tracked by Bloomberg higher by 10% over the past week while the most-hated stocks tracked by a Goldman Sachs Group Inc. basket is up roughly 17% over the same period.

The resurgence of more speculative areas of the market is likely fueled in part by individual traders willingness to jump on riskier trades and bet against hedge funds. A rally in tech shares and other growth stocks at one point on Monday pushed the Nasdaq 100 Index up 20% from a June low amid alarms from some on Wall Street that the Federal Reserve is set on fighting inflation regardless of the pain for the stock market.

The “smart guys” are “confused, baffled and fighting short positions from a position of weakness in terms of momentum and firepower,” said Mark Taylor, a sales trader at Mirabaud Securities. “The lack of real understanding of why a sudden resurrection of the meme-entum bid could lead to some nefarious speculation about things being manipulated but what would be as much sour grapes speculation as anything real.”

Bed Bath & Beyond’s taking of the meme stock baton resulted in a 40% rally Monday as a record 120.5 million shares changed hands with the stock being the second-most bought asset on Fidelity’s platform. AMC Entertainment was among the five most purchased stocks on the platform and saw trading volume triple what’s been normal over the past month. Both company tickers, along with GameStop Corp., were the most mentioned on Reddit’s WallStreetBets platform.

A basket of meme stocks tracked by Bloomberg rose 3.7%, extending a six-day rally of its own. Among the group’s top performers were GameStop and Express Inc. Newly-public Magic Empire Global Ltd., a little-known Hong Kong-based financial services firm, extended a 2,825% two-day surge since going public, attracting some retail attention.

“These meme stock rallies that are emerging will only last if US stocks broadly continue to head higher,” said Ed Moya, senior market strategist at Oanda. “After AMTD Digital reminded the WallStreetBets crowd of the potential skyrocketing moves, many retail traders are scanning their favorite plays and are looking to get back in.”

The rapid rise and subsequent fall for AMTD Digital Inc. both puzzled and captivated the markets. The stock posted an eye-popping surge of more than 32,000% at one point before erasing a chunk of gains.

Heavily-shorted stocks like Wayfair Inc., Rent the Runway Inc., and those that went public via blank-check merger including 23andMe Holding Co. saw double-digit rallies at one point as investors braced for volatility.

Short Squeeze

Short covering from institutional investors may have boosted the recent surge, according to some on Wall Street. More than half of Bed Bath & Beyond shares available for trading are currently sold short, according to data from analytics firm S3 Partners, while AMC Entertainment, GameStop and Wayfair short interest each sit around 20%.

An index tracking hedge funds’ high-conviction bets rose 1.8% last week, trailing those favored by retail investors by 2.7 percentage points, the most since March, data compiled by Goldman Sachs show. “The lack of real understanding of why a sudden resurrection of the meme-entum bid could lead to some nefarious speculation about things being manipulated but what would be as much sour grapes speculation as anything real.”Bed Bath & Beyond’s taking of the meme stock baton resulted in a 40% rally Monday as a record 120.5 million shares changed hands with the stock being the second-most bought asset on Fidelity’s platform. AMC Entertainment was among the five most purchased stocks on the platform and saw trading volume triple what’s been normal over the past month. Both company tickers, along with GameStop Corp., were the most mentioned on Reddit’s WallStreetBets platform.A basket of meme stocks tracked by Bloomberg rose 3.7%, extending a six-day rally of its own. Among the group’s top performers were GameStop and Express Inc. Newly-public Magic Empire Global Ltd., a little-known Hong Kong-based financial services firm, extended a 2,825% two-day surge since going public, attracting some retail attention.“These meme stock rallies that are emerging will only last if US stocks broadly continue to head higher,” said Ed Moya, senior market strategist at Oanda. “After AMTD Digital reminded the WallStreetBets crowd of the potential skyrocketing moves, many retail traders are scanning their favorite plays and are looking to get back in.”The rapid rise and subsequent fall for AMTD Digital Inc. both puzzled and captivated the markets. The stock posted an eye-popping surge of more than 32,000% at one point before erasing a chunk of gains.Heavily-shorted stocks like Wayfair Inc., Rent the Runway Inc., and those that went public via blank-check merger including 23andMe Holding Co. saw double-digit rallies at one point as investors braced for volatility.Short SqueezeShort covering from institutional investors may have boosted the recent surge, according to some on Wall Street. More than half of Bed Bath & Beyond shares available for trading are currently sold short, according to data from analytics firm S3 Partners, while AMC Entertainment, GameStop and Wayfair short interest each sit around 20%.An index tracking hedge funds’ high-conviction bets rose 1.8% last week, trailing those favored by retail investors by 2.7 percentage points, the most since March, data compiled by Goldman Sachs show. While still early into August, the firm’s basket of retail favorites is on track for the best month since Jan. 2021 relative to firms favored by hedge funds. The retail basket carries names including Delta Airlines Inc., which just clocked the longest streak of weekly gains since 2020.“Retail traders have to move quickly, because one headline can change the entire trajectory of the stock market,” said Quincy Krosby, chief global strategist at LPL Financial. “Retail traders are daring the Fed and they’re daring some professional investors, and they’re doing well so far. He runs four companies and might add a fifth, but he also plays the role ","content":"

Elon Musk has a lot to do. He runs four companies and might add a fifth, but he also plays the role of economist from time to time.

The Tesla (ticker: TSLA) CEO tweeted out Thursday night that a lengthy global recession was possible, but explained that wasn't all bad.

Musk thinks a global recession, likely resulting from the mix of rising inflation and interest rates, could last more than a year. A downturn that long, however, would kill off companies that don't generate positive cash flow and consume resources, according to the CEO.

In addition to managing Tesla, he runs SpaceX, Neuralink, and The Boring Company. He might add Twitter (TWTR), where he has more than 95 million followers, to his list of businesses.

Tesla didn't respond to a request for comment about Musk's feelings about recessions or what Tesla would do if his scenario played out.

It isn't the first time in recent history that Musk has offered some economic thoughts. He talked about the benefits of robotic labor on the overall economy when introducing Tesla's humanoid robot project Optimus.

Better reallocation of capital is one potential benefit of recession. Musk isn't the first person to suggest that. Andrew Mellon served as secretary of the Treasury under three U.S. presidents -- Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover -- and he said something similar around the start of the 1930s.

"Liquidate labor, liquidate stocks, liquidate the farmers, liquidate real estate. Purge the rottenness out of the system. High costs of living and high living will come down [and] enterprising people will pick up the wrecks from less competent people," is the advice Hoover attributed to Mellon in his memoirs.

Capital certainly gets wasted in boom times. Everyone has a story or memory of a business that just doesn't seem to make a lot of sense. In the bull market of recent years, many start-ups that merged with special-purpose acquisition companies have struggled to hit their original revenue projections. That could be a sign their business models weren't as sound as hoped.

Still, recessions do more than reset the capital-allocation function in an economy. They are painful, with falling stock prices and rising unemployment. Mellon's comments, in fact, were made around the start of the Great Depression. They haven't aged well.

The Depression, of course, followed the Roaring 20s. By late in that decade, capital was being given to the early 20th century equivalent of shaky start-ups.

The economic downturn that followed the 1920s was brutal. Unemployment rose from about 3% in 1929 to almost 24% in 1932.

That level of pain from any economic downturn is rare. Regulators get part of the blame for making the downturn following the 1920s worse than it had to be. "Regarding the Great Depression ...we did it. We're very sorry [and] we won't do it again," said former Federal Reserve chair Ben Bernanke in 2002 at a party for Nobel Prize-winning economist Milton Friedman's 90th birthday.

Bernanke's point was the Fed could have reacted with more accommodative policy -- cutting interest rates and helping debtors pay their bills -- to help ease the downturn.

Maybe the Great Depression didn't have to be so great, but it's a risky idea to suggest a downturn's benefits will outweigh the costs. Business upturns and downturns both come with their list of nasty unforeseen outcomes.

Tesla shares, along with stocks of other auto makers, are acting like a recession is on the way. Tesla, General Motors and Ford Motor shares are down about 35% year to date, on average, worse than the 15% and 10%, comparable, respective declines of the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average.

Cars are big purchases, usually financed, and investors typically sell car stocks entering an economic downturn. He runs four companies and might add a fifth, but he also plays the role of economist from time to time. The Tesla (ticker: TSLA) CEO tweeted out Thursday night that a lengthy global recession was possible, but explained that wasn't all bad.Musk thinks a global recession, likely resulting from the mix of rising inflation and interest rates, could last more than a year. A downturn that long, however, would kill off companies that don't generate positive cash flow and consume resources, according to the CEO.In addition to managing Tesla, he runs SpaceX, Neuralink, and The Boring Company. He might add Twitter (TWTR), where he has more than 95 million followers, to his list of businesses.Tesla didn't respond to a request for comment about Musk's feelings about recessions or what Tesla would do if his scenario played out.It isn't the first time in recent history that Musk has offered some economic thoughts. He talked about the benefits of robotic labor on the overall economy when introducing Tesla's humanoid robot project Optimus.Better reallocation of capital is one potential benefit of recession. Musk isn't the first person to suggest that. Andrew Mellon served as secretary of the Treasury under three U.S. presidents -- Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover -- and he said something similar around the start of the 1930s.\"Liquidate labor, liquidate stocks, liquidate the farmers, liquidate real estate. Purge the rottenness out of the system. High costs of living and high living will come down [and] enterprising people will pick up the wrecks from less competent people,\" is the advice Hoover attributed to Mellon in his memoirs.Capital certainly gets wasted in boom times. Everyone has a story or memory of a business that just doesn't seem to make a lot of sense. In the bull market of recent years, many start-ups that merged with special-purpose acquisition companies have struggled to hit their original revenue projections. That could be a sign their business models weren't as sound as hoped.Still, recessions do more than reset the capital-allocation function in an economy. They are painful, with falling stock prices and rising unemployment. Mellon's comments, in fact, were made around the start of the Great Depression. They haven't aged well. The Depression, of course, followed the Roaring 20s. By late in that decade, capital was being given to the early 20th century equivalent of shaky start-ups.The economic downturn that followed the 1920s was brutal. Unemployment rose from about 3% in 1929 to almost 24% in 1932.That level of pain from any economic downturn is rare. Regulators get part of the blame for making the downturn following the 1920s worse than it had to be. \"Regarding the Great Depression ...we did it. We're very sorry [and] we won't do it again,\" said former Federal Reserve chair Ben Bernanke in 2002 at a party for Nobel Prize-winning economist Milton Friedman's 90th birthday.Bernanke's point was the Fed could have reacted with more accommodative policy -- cutting interest rates and helping debtors pay their bills -- to help ease the downturn.Maybe the Great Depression didn't have to be so great, but it's a risky idea to suggest a downturn's benefits will outweigh the costs. Business upturns and downturns both come with their list of nasty unforeseen outcomes.Tesla shares, along with stocks of other auto makers, are acting like a recession is on the way. Tesla, General Motors and Ford Motor shares are down about 35% year to date, on average, worse than the 15% and 10%, comparable, respective declines of the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average.Cars are big purchases, usually financed, and investors typically sell car stocks entering an economic downturn. Investors are worried about the future. That is the biggest reason for the 2022 decline in those stocks. All three companies are making good money right now.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":15,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9081146247,"gmtCreate":1650215270886,"gmtModify":1676534670738,"author":{"id":"3575434058623725","authorId":"3575434058623725","name":"Pinkypink","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3575434058623725","authorIdStr":"3575434058623725"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Ok","listText":"Ok","text":"Ok","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9081146247","repostId":"9083548070","repostType":1,"repost":{"id":9083548070,"gmtCreate":1650151972188,"gmtModify":1676534655320,"author":{"id":"3538607189670435","authorId":"3538607189670435","name":"ariesyn","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8849cf18b95c57c0aab10242e8a387ef","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3538607189670435","authorIdStr":"3538607189670435"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"<a
