After being one of the beneficiaries of the “Reddit rally” along withGameStop(NYSE:GME) andAMC Entertainment(NYSE:AMC) in late January, PLTR has been nearly halved from its closing high.

Shares in fact are down more than 15% year-to-date and threatening to hit their lowest levels since November.

From that perspective, Palantir simply needs to give investors some good news on Tuesday — any kind of good news.

But the second is that Palantir still is relatively new to the public markets. The company onlyexecuted its direct listingat the end of September. Tuesday’s earnings release is just the company’s third so far.

Obviously, investors knew of Palantir before it went public. The prospectus filed with the direct listing included historical financial data.

Still, there are big questions that still surround Palantir — including exactly what kind of company this is. As investors review the Q1 numbers and listen to the post-earnings conference call, they’re going to have those questions in mind — and they’ll be looking for answers.

A Software Company or a Consulting Firm?

There’s one core question that is paramount for PLTR stock. Is Palantir a software company or a consulting firm?

It’s too simplistic to say that PLTR is too cheap if it’s the former and too expensive if it’s the latter, but there is some truth to that argument. Even after a pullback, and even backing out net cash, PLTR still trades for about 25x this year’s consensus revenue estimate.

That’s a software multiple, pure and simple. In fact, it’s a somewhat high software multiple. Companies in that ballpark includeSnowflake(NYSE:SNOW),Datadog(NASDAQ:DDOG), andCrowdStrike(NASDAQ:CRWD)

It might seem ridiculous to question the operating model this way 18 years after the company’s founding, and obviously, Palantir does offer software. Most notably, its Foundry platform is the key to its go-to-market strategy going forward.

But the question is to what extent human intervention is needed to make the Big Data platform work. AsNew Yorkmagazine put it inan intriguing profileof Palantir last year:

Palantir, it turns out, has run headlong into the problem plaguing many tech firms engaged in the quest for total information awareness: Real-world data is often too messy and complex for computers to translate without lots of help from humans.

One quick-and-dirty way to answer this question is to look at gross margins. Not coincidentally, for Palantir they’ve been all over the place.

In 2020, excluding stock-based compensation (which was inflated by the direct listing), gross margins were 80.5%. The year before, they came in at just 71.1%.

Gross margins thus are going to be a point of focus in Q1. Another 80%-plus print would suggest that Foundry is doing what Palantir, and PLTR bulls, believe it can: cement Palantir as a top-tier software company. That in turn could lead PLTR stock to be revalued as such.

What Else Can Move PLTR Stock

Of course, investors will be looking at more than just one metric.

Revenue will be a point of focus. After the fourth quarter, Palantir guided for45% year-over-year growthin Q1. That’s about in line with the 47% increase posted for full-year 2020.

Historically, most software companies guide conservatively (and as a result post beats relative to Wall Street expectations). So even after the pullback in PLTR stock, Palantir needs to hit 45% at least. It probably takes something closer to 50% to get investors truly excited.

That said, a big beat or miss is somewhat unlikely. Palantir serves most large-cap companies under large-scale contracts, and the company gave Q1 guidance halfway through the quarter. Its visibility toward quarter-end should have been quite clear.

That leaves earnings. Analysts are looking for 4 cents per share from Palantir, and here too a beat seems likely. But how Palantir drives a beat will be important (while a miss looks dangerous for PLTR stock).

Again, gross margins will be key, but the same is true for spending.

As an analyst noted late last year, Palantir’s operating expensesdeclined in 2020. Again excluding share-based compensation, sales and marketing spend dropped 23%, and research and development 14%. (General and administrative expense did increase 15%.)

The cut in spending seems strange given Palantir’s strong growth. The novel coronavirus pandemic may have played a role, admittedly. The more normalized environment of the first quarter should give some more color on this front.

All told, this is not likely to be a quarter where a beat on its own sends PLTR stock higher. Given the number of questions here, “how” might be more important than”how much?”

Palantir fell about 6% in morning trading.

On the date of publication, Vince Martin did not have (either directly or indirectly) any positions in the securities mentioned in this article.
","source":"lsy1606302653667","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Palantir Technologies Could Have an Unpleasant Surprise on This Week’s Earnings
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nPalantir Technologies Could Have an Unpleasant Surprise on This Week’s Earnings\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-05-10 22:46 GMT+8 InvestorPlace\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
PLTR stock is struggling into a suddenly key earnings report. There are two reasons why first-quarter earnings on Tuesday look key forPalantir Technologies(NYSE:PLTR) stock. The first is that PLTR is ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"PLTR":"Palantir Technologies Inc."},"source_url":"https://investorplace.com/2021/05/pltr-stock-unpleasant-surprise-this-weeks-earnings/","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1167387222","content_text":"PLTR stock is struggling into a suddenly key earnings report. There are two reasons why first-quarter earnings on Tuesday look key forPalantir Technologies(NYSE:PLTR) stock. The first is that PLTR is sliding into the report. What to Know.

Chinese electric vehicle maker NIO posted better than expected first quarter results. But the global automotive microchip shortage will hit production in the coming months.

NIO (ticker: NIO) is a highly valued, high-growth stock. Now NIO bulls have to decide whether solid earnings will trump the growth hiccup or whether the chip shortage can hurt the company in the long run.

NIO lost 23 cents a share on an adjusted, non-GAAP basis, from $1.2 billion in sales. Wall Street was looking for a comparable 84 cent loss from $1.1 billion in sales. NIO’s corporate gross profit margin came in at 19.5%, about 3 percentage points better than analysts projected and up from negative 12% a year ago. First quarter results look solid.

The stock isn’t moving though. NIO reported numbers at 5:30 p.m. eastern time and not a lot of stock is trading after hours. NIO shares closed down 5.3% in Thursday trading. TheS&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average rose about 0.7%.

“NIO started the year of 2021 with a new quarterly delivery record of 20,060 vehicles in the first quarter,” said CEO William Bin Li in the company’s news release. “The overall demand for our products continues to be quite strong, but the supply chain is still facing significant challenges due to the semiconductor shortage.”

Management called the chip situation “very severe” on its conference call and projected 21,000 to 22,000 vehicle deliveries for the second quarter and sales of about $1.3 billion. The Street is projecting $1.2 billion in sales. But the unit delivery guidance is a little lower than Deutsche Bank analyst Edison Yu had expected.

For the full year, Yu is modeling 95,000 deliveries. With about 42,000 deliveries likely for the first half of 2021, the resolution of the global chip shortage will go a long way to deciding whether or not NIO can reach Yu’s number.

Yu rates NIO shares Buy and has a $60 price target for the stock.

The overall quarter feels a little like Ford Motor‘s (F) quarter, which was reported Wednesday. Ford reported sales and earnings far better than Wall Street projected. Unit volumes were below the company’s internal projections, but improving vehicle mix boosted sales beyond Street projections. Ford prioritized making higher-end vehicles in the face of limited chip supply. Looking ahead, Ford said the impact of the chip shortage would be at the high end of the company’s initial $1 billion to $2.5 billion cost guidance.

Ford stock close down 9.4% Thursday, the day after the Wednesday evening report. The NIO second-quarter guidance isn’t as surprising as Ford’s. And NIO doesn’t have full-year guidance. But calling NIO’s stock price reaction is difficult.

Ford trades for less than 7 times estimated 2022 earnings. NIO is expected to become profitable on a full-year basis in 2022. The two will keep working together on philanthropic efforts, which have addressed education, gender equality and health care.\"After a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship, we have made the decision to end our marriage,\" Bill and Melinda Gates wrote in a statement that Bill Gatestweeted out.“Over the last 27 years, we have raised three incredible children and built a foundation that works all over the world to enable all people to lead healthy, productive lives. We continue to share a belief in that mission and will continue our work together at the foundation, but we no longer believe we can grow together as a couple in this next phase of our lives. We ask for space and privacy for our family as we begin to navigate this new life.”The decision reflects a personal change at the top of American business.Bill Gates led Microsoft as CEO from its founding with Paul Allen in 1975 until 2000, leaving Steve Ballmer to run the company, while Bill Gates became chairman and chief software architect. In 2008 Gatesgave up his day-to-day roleat the company to spend more time on the nonprofit Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.Last year Bill Gatesstepped downfrom Microsoft’s board asthe coronavirusbecame a force around the world. He began spending more time on the foundation alongside Melinda Gates. The two are co-chairs and trustees of the foundation, which launched in 2000.Bill and Melinda Gates both worked at Microsoft. She had been a general manager at the software company, where she worked on products such as the Encarta encyclopedia, according to herLinkedIn profile. The two met at a dinner for Microsoft employees in 1987. “It took him quite a few months before he asked me out,” Melinda Gateslater said. Bill Gates hadweighed the pros and cons on a blackboard, and in 1994 the couple were married in Hawaii.Financial details of the Gateses parting ways are not yet clear. Bill Gates owns 1.37% of Microsoft’s outstanding shares, which are worth more than $26 billion, according to FactSet. The couple were creators, along with Warren Buffett, of theGiving Pledge, a program that requires participants to give away more than half of their wealth. At one point the couple decided to move $20 billion worth of Microsoft stock to the foundation as they sought to increase their commitment to philanthropy, Bill Gates wrote in a 2019blog post. Today the foundation has more than $51 billion in assets, according to a tax filing, making itone of the world’s wealthiest foundations.“In the case of Melinda, it is a truly equal partner,” Bill Gates said in the 2019 Netflix documentary “Inside Bill’s Brain.” “She’s a lot like me in that she is optimistic and she is interested in science. She is better with people than I am. She’s a tiny bit less hardcore about knowing, you know, immunology, than I am.”In 2015 the two began pursuing areas they were interested in. Bill Gates established Breakthrough Energy, an initiative to slow climate change that includes a venture arm, and Melinda Gates created Pivotal Ventures, a company that makes investments to foster equality. For Valentine’s Day in 2020, Bill Gates posted a photoon Instagramshowing him standing with his arm around Melinda Gates. “I couldn’t ask for a better partner on this journey,” the caption said. Each year for more than a decade the Gateses have published a letter about their foundation work. In thelatest one, published in January, they reflected on the impact of the pandemic, beyond supporting the development of vaccines. “For us, the days became a blur of video meetings, troubling news alerts, and microwaved meals,” they wrote.Bill Gates is the world’s fourth richest person, behindAmazon’sJeff Bezos, LVMH’s Bernard Arnault and Tesla’s Elon Musk, according toForbes. The announcement comes two years after Bezos said he and his wife, MacKenzie, weregetting divorced. Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos are among the world’s richest people, and Amazon and Microsoft compete in the cloud computing business. Amazon said earlier this year that Bezos would be stepping down from his post as CEO and that cloud chief Andy Jassywould succeed him.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":89,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":108076738,"gmtCreate":1619968647924,"gmtModify":1704336866211,"author":{"id":"3575797745026233","authorId":"3575797745026233","name":"SnowPenguin","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0c1df7e59f071340725760d5ab8a37c0","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3575797745026233","authorIdStr":"3575797745026233"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Amazon will fly to dominate. On April 29, it was Amazon's (AMZN) turn to drop the mic with another earnings smasher, its fourth consecutive all-around beat. The tech and consumer goods giant topped expectations across the board, and remained on track to achieve world domination: by far the largest global retailer and IaaS cloud provider.
\n
One very important piece of Amazon's business seems to justify bullish after-hours reaction more than anything else, as I watch the stock soar 4% ahead of the earnings call. Amazon Web Services delivered much higher-than-forecasted revenues and solid margins of 30.8%, fueling optimism for cloud and digital transformation.
\n
Results were spotless
\n
Wall Street already expected Amazon to have an outstanding quarter, with EPS climbing by nearly 100%. Little did analysts know that the company's earnings would top aggressive projections by the third widest margin of the past five years, at least. EPS of $15.79 was an astonishing 215% increase YOY.
\n
The table below, particularly the area highlighted, depicts Amazon's impressive top-line performance. The broad North America and International segments, which basically encompass everything except cloud infrastructure services, experienced growth of at least 40%, fueled by:
\n
\n
lingering stay-at-home tailwinds from the pandemic;
\n
a likely permanent shift in how consumers shop (i.e. online);
\n
the ramp up of smaller initiatives that are still in high-growth stage.
\n
\n
Source: Collage from earnings report
\n
The slower growth, smaller revenue AWS segment, however, is what I believe impressed investors the most in the first quarter. Top-line growth of 32% was quite an achievement, compared to 28% last quarter. The four percentage-point growthaccelerationcompares very favorably to Microsoft (MSFT) Azure's two percentage-point deceleration in the same period. This apparent shift in market share may explain why AMZN was up strongly after hours, while MSFT was down about 0.4%.
\n
I believe that the market pays too much attention to quarter-by-quarter cloud revenue flows. Matters like revenue recognition and lumpiness in large contracts can impact short-term performance. Yet, investor sentiment seems to get a boost whenever AWS performs well, as it did in the first quarter. All the better for Amazon shareholders.
\n
Stock is hot, company is hotter
\n
Some might feel uneasy buying AMZN after the stock climbed 16% in the past month alone, while the S&P 500 traded higher by \"only\" 6% during the same period. This is especially true if one considers recent bullishness in Amazon stock to have been driven by a speculated stock split that, until now, has not been confirmed.
\n
But on the heels of a killer quarter, I believe that it is very hard to build a bearish case on Amazon. Yes, multiples are high (see below), and they likely will continue to be for the foreseeable future. But the company's staggering fundamentals seem to justify the valuation premium. Consider the dizzying growth pace of virtually all Amazon's sub-segments, much of which I would credit to secular (not temporary, pandemic-related) trends in digital commerce and cloud adoption.
\n
Data by YCharts
\n
To invest in AMZN, I believe that one needs to focus on the long term. In the short term, anything can happen to the stock. A post-earnings, \"sell the news\" pullback driven by profit taking is certainly not out of question.
\n
But look farther out in time, and it is likely that AMZN will continue to grow into its valuation. For example, 2026 EPS projections currently stand at over $200. Judging by what Amazon delivered in Q1, they could prove to be conservative estimates. At current levels, shares trade at a five-year forward P/E of only 17x, which is absurdly low (in my view) for a company that will likely continue to thrive well beyond the next few years.
","source":"seekingalpha","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Amazon Earnings Review: On Track For World Domination
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nAmazon Earnings Review: On Track For World Domination\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-04-30 15:53 GMT+8 seekingalpha\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Summary\n\nBig Tech has been having an outstanding Q1, with Amazon being the latest to drop the mic with another massive all-around beat.\nAWS seems to justify bullish after-hours reaction more than ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"AMZN":"亚马逊"},"source_url":"https://seekingalpha.com/article/4422778-amazon-earnings-review-on-track-for-world-domination","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/5a36db9d73b4222bc376d24ccc48c8a4","article_id":"1103818454","content_text":"Summary\n\nBig Tech has been having an outstanding Q1, with Amazon being the latest to drop the mic with another massive all-around beat.\nAWS seems to justify bullish after-hours reaction more than anything else, on the back of growth acceleration and solid margins.\nAmazon shares are looking hot, after a 16% one-month rally. Investors have never been more confident in the power of an economic recovery for 2021, and they're hoping that despite big market gains already in the past year, there's room for still more movement higher among major market benchmarks.
\n
If anything can send the market to new records on Friday, it'll be earnings reports from a couple of stocks with exposure to technology.Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN) is a household name worldwide, but investors won't necessarily be as familiar with Australia's Atlassian (NASDAQ:TEAM). Nevertheless, both showed signs of strength and could help build even more positive momentum on Wall Street to finish the week.
\n
How the market did on Thursday
\n
The day was a volatile one, with markets initially climbing on positive economic news. By midday, investors had given back just about all of their daily gains, but more optimism as the afternoon went on ended up pulling the S&P,Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX:^IXIC), and Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES:^DJI) all higher.
\n
DATA SOURCE: YAHOO! But in the after-hours market, the FAANG stock climbed almost 4% as of 5 p.m. EDT following the e-commerce and cloud computing company's quarterly financial report.
\n
Amazon's numbers were outstanding. Revenue soared 44% to $108.5 billion, with service sales leading the way higher with a 52% year-over-year gain. Net income more than tripled to $8.1 billion, and that produced earnings of $15.79 per share. The workplace collaboration software platform provider continued to build positive momentum as it released its fiscal third-quarter financial results.
\n
Atlassian continued to see the benefit of high demand for its services in its quarterly numbers. Third-quarter revenue jumped 38% from the year-ago period, with subscription-based sales soaring at an even faster 43% rate. Atlassian contained costs well, leading to the company reversing its year-earlier loss with earnings of $0.63 per share.
\n
In particular, cloud migration is playing a huge role in Atlassian's success. Investors have never been more confident in the power of an economic recovery for 2021, and they're hoping that despite big market gains already in the past year, there's room for still more movement higher among major market benchmarks.\nIf anything can send the market to new records on Friday, it'll be earnings reports from a couple of stocks with exposure to technology.Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN) is a household name worldwide, but investors won't necessarily be as familiar with Australia's Atlassian (NASDAQ:TEAM). Nevertheless, both showed signs of strength and could help build even more positive momentum on Wall Street to finish the week.\nHow the market did on Thursday\nThe day was a volatile one, with markets initially climbing on positive economic news. By midday, investors had given back just about all of their daily gains, but more optimism as the afternoon went on ended up pulling the S&P,Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX:^IXIC), and Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES:^DJI) all higher.\nDATA SOURCE: YAHOO! FINANCE.\nAmazon's after-hours ascent\nShares of Amazon didn't do much during Thursday's regular session. But in the after-hours market, the FAANG stock climbed almost 4% as of 5 p.m. EDT following the e-commerce and cloud computing company's quarterly financial report.\nAmazon's numbers were outstanding. Revenue soared 44% to $108.5 billion, with service sales leading the way higher with a 52% year-over-year gain. Net income more than tripled to $8.1 billion, and that produced earnings of $15.79 per share. All of the numbers were well above what most of those following Amazon had expected.\nIMAGE SOURCE: GETTY IMAGES.\nThe thriving e-commerce business makes complete sense given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, but the success of Amazon Web Services was also noteworthy. Segment revenue there rose 32%, with operating income getting a 35% boost.\nFounder and CEO Jeff Bezos celebrated the 10th anniversary of Prime Video and the 15th anniversary of Amazon Web Services, and he foresees plenty of upside for them in the future.Amazon has a host of growth opportunities lined up ahead of it, and shareholders have to like what they're seeing from the colossus as it looks forward.\nAtlassian wins one for the team\nElsewhere, shares of Atlassian reversed a 3% drop during the regular session by rising almost 7% after hours. The workplace collaboration software platform provider continued to build positive momentum as it released its fiscal third-quarter financial results.\nAtlassian continued to see the benefit of high demand for its services in its quarterly numbers. Third-quarter revenue jumped 38% from the year-ago period, with subscription-based sales soaring at an even faster 43% rate. Atlassian contained costs well, leading to the company reversing its year-earlier loss with earnings of $0.63 per share.\nIn particular, cloud migration is playing a huge role in Atlassian's success. The company pointed to data analytics provider Splunk (NASDAQ:SPLK) as just one example of many companies moving to the cloud in order to get more value from Atlassian offerings like Jira and Confluence. Moreover, by working closely with clients, Atlassian is developing the products and services that resonate most with users.\nAtlassian has flown under the radar of many investors, but it's rapidly becoming a massive player in the global cloud services industry. It might never catch up to Amazon, but there's a lot to like in what Atlassian has done so far.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":114,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"lives":[]}
