A stock split is when a company increases its existing total share count by a specific ratio to lower its share price. The important thing to note is the company's total market capitalization remains unchanged strictly based on the stock split.For example, Tesla's proposed 3-for-1 split means the automaker is tripling the number of outstanding shares on the market.
