Shutterstock
\n
It’s the tail end of earnings season with only a few notable companies left to issue earnings reports. In the coming weeks, we’ll get results from a few influential and closely followed companies, including a major technology firm and homebuilder. These earnings will bring to a close what has been, by all accounts, a stellar season of corporate results.
\n
Over the past several months, we have witnessed a parade of better-than-expected quarterly earnings from both small and large companies. The strong earnings are expected to continue through the rest of this year, with Wells Fargo(NYSE:WFC) recently forecasting that strong financial results will lift the S&P 500 index a further 8% through the end of December.
\n
Here are four companies with earnings reports the week of September 13:
\n
\n
Oracle(NYSE:ORCL)
\n
Lennar(NYSE:LEN)
\n
Birks Group(NYSEAMERICAN:BGI)
\n
\n
Oracle (ORCL)
\n
The lone large cap technology company reporting earnings in the week ahead is database and enterprise software giant Oracle. On Sept. 13, the Austin, Texas-based company will report its fiscal first quarter 2022 results. Any beat to the upside should add to ORCL stock’s already considerable momentum.
\n
Year-to-date the company’s shares are up almost 40% at a Sept. 10 opening price of just under $90. The latest rally, which has been ongoing since mid-June, could get a second wind if Oracle manages to impress Wall Street with its latest numbers.
\n
Wall Street is looking for Oracle to report revenues of $9.77 billion and earnings per share of $0.97 for its first quarter. Analysts expect the company’s earnings to be powered by its cloud infrastructure business, which has taken off this year as a growing number of businesses accelerate their migration to cloud computing and storage. Oracle is also getting a boost from the rollout of 5G wireless networking. In its previous quarterly earnings report, Oracle was expected to announce EPS of $1.31 per share, but ended up reporting $1.54 per share instead, beating the street by an impressive 17.56%.
\n
Lennar (LEN)
\n
Lennar, the largest homebuilder in the U.S., reports its latest earnings on Sept. 20. And, as always, investors, analysts and economists will be watching closely for signs of health in the American housing market.
\n
LEN stock has done well this year, rising 33% since January to now trade at just over $100 a share. However, the stock has moved in fits and starts in recent months. In the last 30 days, Lennar’s share price has pulled back 4% from its 52-week high of $110.61. With a trailing price-to-earnings ratio of just 9.79, Lennar’s stock looks undervalued.
\n
Lennar has been benefitting this year from the booming housing market that has been fueled by low interest rates and a desire for people to upgrade their home during the pandemic. Wall Street certainly has high expectations for the company’s upcoming earnings.
\n
Analysts are looking for Lennar to report revenues of $6.86 billion, which would be a 17% increase from a year earlier. Earnings per share are forecast to come in at $3.28. With interest rates expected to remain at rock bottom lows until at least the middle of next year, Lennar and its shareholders should continue to reap rewards.
\n
Birks Group (BGI)
\n
Now for a penny stock that has shown real moxie this year. Montreal, Quebec-based jeweler Birks Group is currently estimated to report its earnings on Sept. 16, and the results could extend what has already been an incredible year for BGI stock.
\n
Since January, Birks Group share price has grown 187%, rising from $0.84 to its current level of $2.50. In March of this year, the stock was as high as $5.43 before retreating by 54% to its current price. The growth (and volatility) in the stock price can be attributed to gradually improving sales as it reopened most of its 29 retail outlets in its native Canada and the U.S.
\n
Birks should perform well in the final months of the year and during the holidays, which is traditionally the strongest sales period for its jewelry and gift items. Owing to its penny stock status, there are no real analyst forecasts for the company’s upcoming earnings. However, in its previous quarter, the company announced net sales of $143.1 million, a decrease of 15.5% from the year earlier period. Any improvement on the earnings front could help BGI stock rise further and, perhaps, remain above the $5 per share penny stock threshold.
","source":"lsy1606302653667","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
3 Upcoming Earnings Reports to Watch
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n3 Upcoming Earnings Reports to Watch\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-09-12 10:17 GMT+8 InvestorPlace\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
These three companies could move the market when they release earnings reports this week\nSource: Shutterstock\nIt’s the tail end of earnings season with only a few notable companies left to issue ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"BGI":"Birks Group Inc.","LEN":"莱纳建筑公司","ORCL":"甲骨文"},"source_url":"https://investorplace.com/earnings-reports-to-watch-next-week/","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1160482100","content_text":"These three companies could move the market when they release earnings reports this week\nSource: Shutterstock\nIt’s the tail end of earnings season with only a few notable companies left to issue earnings reports. With a trailing price-to-earnings ratio of just 9.79, Lennar’s stock looks undervalued.\nLennar has been benefitting this year from the booming housing market that has been fueled by low interest rates and a desire for people to upgrade their home during the pandemic. Wall Street certainly has high expectations for the company’s upcoming earnings.\nAnalysts are looking for Lennar to report revenues of $6.86 billion, which would be a 17% increase from a year earlier. Earnings per share are forecast to come in at $3.28. With interest rates expected to remain at rock bottom lows until at least the middle of next year, Lennar and its shareholders should continue to reap rewards.\nBirks Group (BGI)\nNow for a penny stock that has shown real moxie this year. Montreal, Quebec-based jeweler Birks Group is currently estimated to report its earnings on Sept. 16, and the results could extend what has already been an incredible year for BGI stock.\nSince January, Birks Group share price has grown 187%, rising from $0.84 to its current level of $2.50. In March of this year, the stock was as high as $5.43 before retreating by 54% to its current price. The growth (and volatility) in the stock price can be attributed to gradually improving sales as it reopened most of its 29 retail outlets in its native Canada and the U.S.\nBirks should perform well in the final months of the year and during the holidays, which is traditionally the strongest sales period for its jewelry and gift items. Owing to its penny stock status, there are no real analyst forecasts for the company’s upcoming earnings. However, in its previous quarter, the company announced net sales of $143.1 million, a decrease of 15.5% from the year earlier period. Any improvement on the earnings front could help BGI stock rise further and, perhaps, remain above the $5 per share penny stock threshold.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":527,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":117460768,"gmtCreate":1623157799654,"gmtModify":1704197257065,"author":{"id":"3576021805916546","authorId":"3576021805916546","name":"幻想的仙人","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1a107a9d65401870a74fa2225f1d9697","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3576021805916546","authorIdStr":"3576021805916546"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Rise !!!","listText":"Rise !!!","text":"Rise !!!","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/921e4d7dfce2ff3422ab59bd4f5872b9","width":"1080","height":"2861"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/117460768","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":502,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":118020136,"gmtCreate":1622708617125,"gmtModify":1704189362767,"author":{"id":"3576021805916546","authorId":"3576021805916546","name":"幻想的仙人","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1a107a9d65401870a74fa2225f1d9697","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3576021805916546","authorIdStr":"3576021805916546"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Overprice but long term contender in the market","listText":"Overprice but long term contender in the market","text":"Overprice but long term contender in the market","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/118020136","repostId":"1160407593","repostType":2,"repost":{"id":"1160407593","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1622706069,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1160407593?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-06-03 15:41","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Is Apple Stock Overvalued?","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1160407593","media":"seekingalpha","summary":"Despite crushing Q2 earnings estimates, Apple shares have gone in reverse and are underperforming the broader market.I believe Wall Street expectations for Apple's FY2022 are unreasonably high and likely contributing to the recent weakness.Apple's Price/Earnings, Price/Sales, and Price/Free Cash flow still remain significantly elevated to historical levels.I have serious doubt that iPhone, iPad, and Mac sales can continue the current hot sales pace over the next year.Apple bulls have to be frus","content":"
Summary
\n
\n
Despite crushing Q2 earnings estimates, Apple shares have gone in reverse and are underperforming the broader market.
\n
I believe Wall Street expectations for Apple's FY2022 are unreasonably high and likely contributing to the recent weakness.
\n
Apple's Price/Earnings, Price/Sales, and Price/Free Cash flow still remain significantly elevated to historical levels.
\n
I have serious doubt that iPhone, iPad, and Mac sales can continue the current hot sales pace over the next year.
\n
\n
Photo by PeskyMonkey/iStock Editorial via Getty Images
\n
Apple (AAPL) bulls have to be frustrated. However, it’s dropped by more than 50% since reaching ahigh in May.\nCoinbase is one of the largest crypto exchanges on the planet, and its Pro service, as the name suggests, is designed for professional traders. Dogecoin is also available for purchase on Robinhood’s app and through Gemini.\nCoinbase said in ablog postthat it will “immediately” begin accepting inbound transfers to Coinbase Pro. If there is enough liquidity, trading of dogecoin will begin on or after 9 a.m. Pacific Time on Thursday, in supported locations. However, trading will be staggered.\nThe company says it plans to launch in three phases: post-only, limit-only and full trading.\n“If at any point one of the new order books does not meet our assessment for a healthy and orderly market, we may keep the book in one state for a longer period of time or suspend trading,” the company wrote, citing itstrading rules.\nDogecoin is not yet available on Coinbase’s primary website or its consumer mobile apps. The company said there will be a “separate announcement if and when this support is added.” For now, that means that retail investors will have to look elsewhere.\nCoinbase, whichwent public in April, makes most of its money from the trading and storage ofbitcoinand ethereum, the largest cryptocurrencies.\nCEO Brian Armstrong has been a public advocate of the meme-inspired dogecoin. On the company’s May 13 earnings call, Armstrong said that “asset addition is something near and dear” to his heart.\nHe referenced dogecoin as one of the cryptocurrencies that’s getting a lot of attention and shared the company’s plan to list the token in six to eight weeks.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":395,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":119476532,"gmtCreate":1622561715426,"gmtModify":1704186429809,"author":{"id":"3576021805916546","authorId":"3576021805916546","name":"幻想的仙人","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1a107a9d65401870a74fa2225f1d9697","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3576021805916546","authorIdStr":"3576021805916546"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Adding POINTS\n\nStarting Tuesday, Coinbase Pro will accept inbound transfers of dogecoin.\nTrading will begin on or after 9 a.m. PT Thursday June 3, if liquidity conditions are met.\n\nCoinbaseis finally getting into dogecoin.\nStarting Tuesday, the crypto exchange is offering its Pro users the option to tradedogecoin, a cryptocurrency that was started as a joke and has taken off this year, helped by the frequent tweeting ofTeslaCEOElon Musk.\nDogecoin is currently trading at 32 cents, up almost 6,000% for the year. On the company’s May 13 earnings call, Armstrong said that “asset addition is something near and dear” to his heart.\nHe referenced dogecoin as one of the cryptocurrencies that’s getting a lot of attention and shared the company’s plan to list the token in six to eight weeks.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":395,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":886224953,"gmtCreate":1631597709372,"gmtModify":1676530585972,"author":{"id":"3576021805916546","authorId":"3576021805916546","name":"幻想的仙人","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1a107a9d65401870a74fa2225f1d9697","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3576021805916546","authorIdStr":"3576021805916546"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Lucid Group Inc(LCID)$27th September 2021","listText":"$Lucid Group Inc(LCID)$27th September 2021","text":"$Lucid Group Inc(LCID)$27th September 2021","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1712e5521113fbe7d5b755eb0eb0789e","width":"1080","height":"1920"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/886224953","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":374,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":118020136,"gmtCreate":1622708617125,"gmtModify":1704189362767,"author":{"id":"3576021805916546","authorId":"3576021805916546","name":"幻想的仙人","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1a107a9d65401870a74fa2225f1d9697","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3576021805916546","authorIdStr":"3576021805916546"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Overprice but long term contender in the market","listText":"Overprice but long term contender in the market","text":"Overprice but long term contender in the market","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/118020136","repostId":"1160407593","repostType":2,"repost":{"id":"1160407593","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1622706069,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1160407593?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-06-03 15:41","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Is Apple Stock Overvalued?","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1160407593","media":"seekingalpha","summary":"Despite crushing Q2 earnings estimates, Apple shares have gone in reverse and are underperforming the broader market.I believe Wall Street expectations for Apple's FY2022 are unreasonably high and likely contributing to the recent weakness.Apple's Price/Earnings, Price/Sales, and Price/Free Cash flow still remain significantly elevated to historical levels.I have serious doubt that iPhone, iPad, and Mac sales can continue the current hot sales pace over the next year.Apple bulls have to be frus","content":"
Summary
\n
Despite massive earnings beats in both its Q1 holiday quarter and Q2 January-March quarter, the shares have gone no where. The thesis from my last article on Apple, that COVID-19 lockdowns, government handouts, and the launch of 5G all culminated to pull demand into Apple's FY21 year, gained a supporter from analysts at New Street, who are now predicting the same.
\n

\n
New Street isn't predicting that the sky is falling, and neither am I. They are just modelingiPhone shipments in the 180M-200M range versus the 234M consensus.Does this sound like an extreme view? I don't think it is, especially since SA Contributor Paulo Santos has been tracking iPhone sales in China and has seen a significant slowdown from the white-hot start to the beginning of this year. I think similar slowdowns for iPad and Mac are a few quarters away.
\n
What is AAPL's current valuation? Does it make sense?
\n
From the comments I've received on my last two articles, bulls must think I hate Apple and have an axe to grind. This could not be further from the truth. I've owned Apple outright many times in the past, and still own a significant stake in it through my Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.B) holdings. So I'm not rooting against it by any stretch, I'm just calling it like I see it - and I see the valuation as very stretched.
\n
Data by YCharts
\n
Apple's Price/Earnings, Price/Sales, and Price/Free Cash flow still remain significantly elevated- 50% or more - from their historic norms.
\n

\n
This is a key issue because the forward revenue growth and earnings estimates for Apple are already low and predict minimal growth. At these rates, nearly all of the earnings growth would come from the share repurchases.
\n
But these forward estimates assume Apple will repeat the record year they are having again in FY2022. I think the odds of that happening are slim. Instead, I expect a similar situation of what happened between FY2014-FY2016, where operating earnings increased significantly from FY2014 to FY2015, then declined moderately in FY2016.
\n
Apple's FY21 could be peak sales and earnings for a long time
\n
Since 2016, Apple has introduced a lot of successful new products: the Apple Watch, AirPods, and Apple TV, to go along with many new versions of Mac, iPhone, and iPad, along with impressive growth in Services.
\n
Yet with all of that success, Apple's Operating Income peaked in 2015 until shattering the prior peak over the last 12 months. From 2015-2020, Apple was able to grow EPS roughly 7%, with significant help from share repurchases and the TCJA corporate income tax cut. (Without this tax cut, 2020 EPS would have been ~$2.88 rather than $3.28, implying an EPS growth rate of around 4.5%.)
\n

\n
Ultimately, I believe Apple's recent torrid sales performance will not be repeated and should not be considered a new run rate like Wall Street analysts are modeling. I look at iPad sales as an illustration of this. For the last several years, volumes had been steady until exploding 57% last year and continuing the same strength early this year.
\n

\n
Did iPads suddenly become so much more popular? Or were there just a lot of parents working from home that wanted iPads for their kids? I'm going with the latter.
\n
Conclusion - Apple is still a Sell
\n
Wall St. analysts wasted no time increasing earnings expectations for next year based on what I believe is mostly an extrapolation of the current results.
\n
Admittedly, I'm less bullish on the 5G Supercycle than most. I believe that the innovators and early adopters will rush to upgrade, but most of the mass market will remain on the normal upgrade cadence, which continues to lengthen. I think the iPhone is a victim of its own success - that the recent iPhones are all so good, upgrading to newer phones is less compelling, and because 4G is \"good enough\" for most people.
\n

\n
Apple earned $2.97 in 2019. They've already earned $3.08 in the first two quarters of this year and current estimates are $5.16 for the full fiscal. Even with the growth in Services, I just do not see them repeating this performance next fiscal year, and expect earnings closer to the $4-4.50/share range, far short of the $5.30 that's currently expected. That would put Price/Earnings back above 30 with a negative growth rate. If this happens, shares could retest the $100 level.
\n
Apple is still a sell here for me. It's a great company that's simply priced too richly. Valuation always matters.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Is Apple Stock Overvalued?
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nIs Apple Stock Overvalued?\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-06-03 15:41 GMT+8 seekingalpha\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Summary\n\nDespite crushing Q2 earnings estimates, Apple shares have gone in reverse and are underperforming the broader market.\nI believe Wall Street expectations for Apple's FY2022 are unreasonably ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"AAPL":"苹果"},"source_url":"https://seekingalpha.com/article/4432646-apple-stock-overvalued","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1160407593","content_text":"Summary\n\nDespite crushing Q2 earnings estimates, Apple shares have gone in reverse and are underperforming the broader market.\nI believe Wall Street expectations for Apple's FY2022 are unreasonably high and likely contributing to the recent weakness.\nApple's Price/Earnings, Price/Sales, and Price/Free Cash flow still remain significantly elevated to historical levels.\nI have serious doubt that iPhone, iPad, and Mac sales can continue the current hot sales pace over the next year.\n\nPhoto by PeskyMonkey/iStock Editorial via Getty Images\nApple (AAPL) bulls have to be frustrated. (Without this tax cut, 2020 EPS would have been ~$2.88 rather than $3.28, implying an EPS growth rate of around 4.5%.)\n\nUltimately, I believe Apple's recent torrid sales performance will not be repeated and should not be considered a new run rate like Wall Street analysts are modeling. I look at iPad sales as an illustration of this. For the last several years, volumes had been steady until exploding 57% last year and continuing the same strength early this year.\n\nDid iPads suddenly become so much more popular? Or were there just a lot of parents working from home that wanted iPads for their kids? I'm going with the latter.\nConclusion - Apple is still a Sell\nWall St. analysts wasted no time increasing earnings expectations for next year based on what I believe is mostly an extrapolation of the current results.\nAdmittedly, I'm less bullish on the 5G Supercycle than most. I believe that the innovators and early adopters will rush to upgrade, but most of the mass market will remain on the normal upgrade cadence, which continues to lengthen. I think the iPhone is a victim of its own success - that the recent iPhones are all so good, upgrading to newer phones is less compelling, and because 4G is \"good enough\" for most people.\n\nApple earned $2.97 in 2019. If this happens, shares could retest the $100 level.\nApple is still a sell here for me. It's a great company that's simply priced too richly. Valuation always matters.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":311,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":886227271,"gmtCreate":1631597874193,"gmtModify":1676530586003,"author":{"id":"3576021805916546","authorId":"3576021805916546","name":"幻想的仙人","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1a107a9d65401870a74fa2225f1d9697","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3576021805916546","authorIdStr":"3576021805916546"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Apple(AAPL)$looking good since the start of the year","listText":"$Apple(AAPL)$looking good since the start of the year","text":"$Apple(AAPL)$looking good since the start of the year","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f78b64bf9d70076f4969f1db9b9527a4","width":"1080","height":"3162"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/886227271","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":389,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":888196008,"gmtCreate":1631451872504,"gmtModify":1676530550166,"author":{"id":"3576021805916546","authorId":"3576021805916546","name":"幻想的仙人","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1a107a9d65401870a74fa2225f1d9697","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3576021805916546","authorIdStr":"3576021805916546"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Interesting","listText":"Interesting","text":"Interesting","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/888196008","repostId":"1160482100","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1160482100","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1631413030,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1160482100?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-09-12 10:17","market":"us","language":"en","title":"3 Upcoming Earnings Reports to Watch","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1160482100","media":"InvestorPlace","summary":"These three companies could move the market when they release earnings reports this week\nSource: Shu","content":"
These three companies could move the market when they release earnings reports this week
\n
Source: Shutterstock
\n
It’s the tail end of earnings season with only a few notable companies left to issue earnings reports. Our base case valuation of Coinbase is $39.9 billion, which is nearly 5x the value the company received in October 2018 ($8 billion) in private funding transaction. However, our base case value of $39.9 billion is nearly 60% lower than the purported recent private market value of$100 billionthat Coinbase received recently.
\n
Because of the lack of the directly comparable cryptocurrency focused exchanges, we compare Coinbase against some of the biggest exchanges (mostly stock markets) globally including Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), Nasdaq Exchange (NDAQ), and Euronext(OTCPK:EUXTF).
\n
Our base case valuation is based on 31.2x the company's sales of $1.3 billion in 2020. This P/S multiple is based on 5x the average P/S multiple of its peers including Intercontinental Exchange, Nasdaq Exchange, and Euronext. The peers are trading at an average P/S multiple of 6.2x in 2020. Our reasoning of applying a 5x higher P/S multiple on Coinbase versus its peers is because Coinbase's sales growth in 2020 was 5x higher (139.4% YoY) than the average sales growth rate of its peers (27.9% YoY).
\n
Nonetheless, applying a 31.2x P/S multiple on Coinbase's 2020 sales may even be generous as Coinbase's business model which mainly involves Bitcoin and Ethereum which are exposed to higher volatility, uncertainties, and regulatory risks as compared to ICE, Nasdaq, and Euronext.
\n
In addition, the combined market caps of ICE, Nasdaq Exchange, and Euronext are $94 billion which is less than the recent private market valuation of nearly $100 billion for Coinbase. We find it hard to digest how Coinbase could be valued higher than the combined market caps of these three largest exchanges in the world, especially because Coinbase is highly exposed to other competitors coming out with more cut-throat lower fees for trading cryptos in the future.
\n
Overall, at an implied market cap value of $100 billion for Coinbase, we think that there is much larger potential downside risk than upside appreciation. As such, we think that the prudent investor should avoid this direct listing of Coinbase if indeed it is priced at nearly $100 billion. Despite the numerous positive factors (such as surging sales growth and turn to profitability), it is difficult to argue for a valuation of nearly $100 billion for Coinbase, which would represent a whopping 78x P/S multiple (using 2020 sales).
\n
Even the company has pointed out in its prospectus that Bitcoin has experienced four major cycles since its launch (the fourth cycle is still ongoing). It also had an operating profit of $409 million in 2020, from an operating loss of $45.8 million in 2019. Coinbase generates nearly all of its revenues from commissions and fees. Transaction revenue represented over 96% of its net revenue in 2020. The company's revenues are highly impacted by the changing crypto prices. Therefore, we would argue that the company's sales and profit growth in 2020 is highly impacted by the surging crypto prices and in the evident of a major downturn in crypto prices, the company's results are bound to deteriorate significantly.
\n
Since late 2018, the company has launched a range of subscription products and services such as Store, Stake, and Borrow & Lend in order to diversify its revenue stream and reduce its reliance on transaction fees. However, they currently remain a minor portion of the company's revenues.
\n
The improvement in the operating margins was due to the surging sales growth and a decline in total operating expenses as a percentage of sales which declined from 108.6% in 2019 to 68% in 2020. Among the major operating expenses, the biggest improvements have come from the transaction expense, technology & development, and general & admin expenses. The general & admin expenses as a percentage of sales also declined significantly from 43.5% in 2019 to 21.9% in 2020.
\n
Although the company has done a good job in increasing sales and profits in 2020, they were driven at a period when crypto prices rallied strongly. However, in the past year, there certainly has been a positive correlation between them. This presents a key risk factor for Coinbase since if there is a major downturn in the S&P 500, it could also drag along the crypto markets as well.
\n
Coinbase's market share in the crypto market capitalization increased from 4.5% in 2018 to 8.3% in 2019, and 11.1% in 2020. The company has done a really good job of taking away market share from its competitors.
\n
Competition
\n
The company faces competition from a wide range of competitors including both big and small companies. For retail users, it competes with firms such as Square(NYSE:SQ)and Robinhood (RBNHD). PayPal(NASDAQ:PYPL)also recently introduced crypto products and services. Binance, which is mostly focused on the crypto market, is also a major competitor. Other major competitors include Gemini, Bitstamp, and Kraken.
\n
The top five crypto exchanges include Binance, Coinbase Pro, Huobi Global, Kraken, and Bitfinex. Among the top 10 cryptocurrency exchanges, globally, two of them are based in Korea including Bithumb and Coinone.
\n
Comparisons of Coinbase, Kraken, and Binance
\n
The comparisons of Coinbase, Kraken, and Binance suggest that while Coinbase is able to enjoy some higher pricing advantages than these other two leading players, this may be because many customers still are willing to pay higher prices for the quality of service and lack of security breaches. In our view, the competitors are likely to catch up to Coinbase in terms of these two factors as well as provide lower pricing for trading cryptos in the coming years which is likely to result in a more difficult competitive environment for Coinbase.
\n
Coinbase and Kraken are two of the leading crypto exchanges based in the United States. UnlikeCoinbase, Kraken charges flat fees on crypto purchases. The standard deposit fee for Kraken is $5. By offering flat fees, Kraken is trying to grab more institutional customers. Coinbase's service has a percentage based fee (of purchasing cryptos) that starts at 1.49% for bank transfers and the fees increase to 3.99% if debit or credit cards are used. Looking at the fees structures, it would appear that many institutional investors could be interested in the flat fees offered by Kraken but many retail investors that invest only small sums of money in cryptos may be more interested in Coinbase.
\n
One of the major differences between Coinbase and Kraken is the digital wallets. Coinbase has completely separate services for the wallets and its crypto exchange (unlike Kraken), which provides a clear separation between the funds the customers would like to hold and the ones they would like to trade. However, at times, the transferring of funds between the exchange and the wallets remains a bit inconvenient. Overall, it appears that Coinbase has an easier user experience, especially among the new users in the crypto market. However, Kraken may be more convenient for more experienced institutional investors.
\n
The trading fees for Kraken start at 0.16% for maker orders and 0.26% for taker orders. These fees are reduced as the customers' 30 days trading volume increases. At the lowest levels, Kraken customers can place free maker trades and 0.10% taker trades if they have a 30-day volume greater than$10 million.
\n
The trading fees for Coinbase start at 0.5% for both taker and maker, which is much more expensive as compared to other leading exchanges. The trading fees for Coinbase decline as the customers increase their 30 day trading volume. Trading under $10,000 over a 30 day period means the customer will incur 0.5% trading fees. Once the customer reaches $1 billion or more, these fees are reduced to 0.04% for taker and 0.00% for maker. Overall, for most investors, Kraken would provide lower trading fees as compared to Coinbase.
\n
Binance also has a tiered trading fee structure and it has one of the most competitive trading fees structures in the market. For Binance, at the lowest volume levels, fees are 0.1% for both makers and takers and at the highest trade volume levels, the fees come down to 0.02% and 0.04% for makers and takers, respectively. In addition, the users can further reduce their trading fees by as much as 25% if they pay fees in Binance's native BNB token.
\n
Why use Coinbase if it has higher fees than Binance and Kraken?Despite Coinbase having higher fees than Binance and Kraken, it appears that millions of people have flocked to using Coinbase mainly due to its better performance on 1) ease of use, 2) security, and 3) customer service. Many customers are willing to pay a bit extra on the trading fees that Coinbase charges due to is relative better performance on its strengths, especially the fact that Coinbase is often cited as the most user friendly.
\n
Also, there have been several cases of hackers stealing cryptos from other smaller exchanges as well as from competitors such asKrakenin the past several years. Coinbase has successfully thwarted off attempts by the hackers to steal money from its accounts. Many customers of Coinbase believe that it is one of the safest cryptocurrency exchanges in the market.
\n

\n
Conclusion
\n
We believe that the prudent investor would avoid the Coinbase direct listing if indeed the pricing is completed at a market cap of nearly $100 billion. Our base case valuation of Coinbase is $39.9 billion, which is nearly 5x the value the company received in October 2018 ($8 billion) in private funding transaction. However, our base case value of $39.9 billion is nearly 60% lower than the purported recent private market value of$100 billionthat Coinbase received recently.\nBecause of the lack of the directly comparable cryptocurrency focused exchanges, we compare Coinbase against some of the biggest exchanges (mostly stock markets) globally including Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), Nasdaq Exchange (NDAQ), and Euronext(OTCPK:EUXTF).\nOur base case valuation is based on 31.2x the company's sales of $1.3 billion in 2020. This P/S multiple is based on 5x the average P/S multiple of its peers including Intercontinental Exchange, Nasdaq Exchange, and Euronext. The peers are trading at an average P/S multiple of 6.2x in 2020. Our reasoning of applying a 5x higher P/S multiple on Coinbase versus its peers is because Coinbase's sales growth in 2020 was 5x higher (139.4% YoY) than the average sales growth rate of its peers (27.9% YoY).\nNonetheless, applying a 31.2x P/S multiple on Coinbase's 2020 sales may even be generous as Coinbase's business model which mainly involves Bitcoin and Ethereum which are exposed to higher volatility, uncertainties, and regulatory risks as compared to ICE, Nasdaq, and Euronext.\nIn addition, the combined market caps of ICE, Nasdaq Exchange, and Euronext are $94 billion which is less than the recent private market valuation of nearly $100 billion for Coinbase. We find it hard to digest how Coinbase could be valued higher than the combined market caps of these three largest exchanges in the world, especially because Coinbase is highly exposed to other competitors coming out with more cut-throat lower fees for trading cryptos in the future.\nOverall, at an implied market cap value of $100 billion for Coinbase, we think that there is much larger potential downside risk than upside appreciation. As such, we think that the prudent investor should avoid this direct listing of Coinbase if indeed it is priced at nearly $100 billion. Despite the numerous positive factors (such as surging sales growth and turn to profitability), it is difficult to argue for a valuation of nearly $100 billion for Coinbase, which would represent a whopping 78x P/S multiple (using 2020 sales).\nEven the company has pointed out in its prospectus that Bitcoin has experienced four major cycles since its launch (the fourth cycle is still ongoing). We would argue that for the prudent investors, there is no rush to buy Coinbase while Bitcoin price is near at its all time highs. The prudent investor should wait until there is a major correction in the Bitcoin price to see how the Coinbase's financials are able to withstand such correction.\nIn addition, we would argue that as the Bitcoin and crypto trading become more mainstream, the trading fees for the cryptos will go down much more significantly, which is likely to negatively impact Coinbase.\n\nCoinbase Income Statement Analysis\nCoinbase generated sales of $1.3 billion in 2020 (up 139.4% YoY). It also had an operating profit of $409 million in 2020, from an operating loss of $45.8 million in 2019. Coinbase generates nearly all of its revenues from commissions and fees. Therefore, we would argue that the company's sales and profit growth in 2020 is highly impacted by the surging crypto prices and in the evident of a major downturn in crypto prices, the company's results are bound to deteriorate significantly.\nSince late 2018, the company has launched a range of subscription products and services such as Store, Stake, and Borrow & Lend in order to diversify its revenue stream and reduce its reliance on transaction fees. However, in the past year, there certainly has been a positive correlation between them. This presents a key risk factor for Coinbase since if there is a major downturn in the S&P 500, it could also drag along the crypto markets as well.\nCoinbase's market share in the crypto market capitalization increased from 4.5% in 2018 to 8.3% in 2019, and 11.1% in 2020. The company has done a really good job of taking away market share from its competitors.\nCompetition\nThe company faces competition from a wide range of competitors including both big and small companies. For retail users, it competes with firms such as Square(NYSE:SQ)and Robinhood (RBNHD). PayPal(NASDAQ:PYPL)also recently introduced crypto products and services. Binance, which is mostly focused on the crypto market, is also a major competitor. Other major competitors include Gemini, Bitstamp, and Kraken.\nThe top five crypto exchanges include Binance, Coinbase Pro, Huobi Global, Kraken, and Bitfinex. Among the top 10 cryptocurrency exchanges, globally, two of them are based in Korea including Bithumb and Coinone.\nComparisons of Coinbase, Kraken, and Binance\nThe comparisons of Coinbase, Kraken, and Binance suggest that while Coinbase is able to enjoy some higher pricing advantages than these other two leading players, this may be because many customers still are willing to pay higher prices for the quality of service and lack of security breaches. In our view, the competitors are likely to catch up to Coinbase in terms of these two factors as well as provide lower pricing for trading cryptos in the coming years which is likely to result in a more difficult competitive environment for Coinbase.\nCoinbase and Kraken are two of the leading crypto exchanges based in the United States. Our base case valuation is $39.9 billion, which is nearly 60% discount to the recent private market valuation of about $100 billion.\nAt a valuation of nearly $100 billion, this would be more than the market caps of the three of the world's largest stock market/commodity exchanges including the Intercontinental Exchange, Nasdaq Exchange, and the Euronext which combined have $94 billion in market cap. We find it hard to understand how Coinbase could be valued higher than the combined market caps of these three largest exchanges in the world, especially because Coinbase is highly exposed to other competitors coming out with more cut-throat lower fees for trading cryptos in the future.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":306,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":119476532,"gmtCreate":1622561715426,"gmtModify":1704186429809,"author":{"id":"3576021805916546","authorId":"3576021805916546","name":"幻想的仙人","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1a107a9d65401870a74fa2225f1d9697","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3576021805916546","authorIdStr":"3576021805916546"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Adding more...","listText":"Adding more...","text":"Adding more...","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6228dcb101cf4490579f9a429f03d8d1","width":"1080","height":"2774"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/119476532","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":294,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":110048455,"gmtCreate":1622419043277,"gmtModify":1704183952875,"author":{"id":"3576021805916546","authorId":"3576021805916546","name":"幻想的仙人","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1a107a9d65401870a74fa2225f1d9697","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3576021805916546","authorIdStr":"3576021805916546"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"A gem","listText":"A gem","text":"A gem","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/58308088884b6c68a9441caa4e0f3d30","width":"1080","height":"2861"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/110048455","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":104,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":131659986,"gmtCreate":1621857828645,"gmtModify":1704363367055,"author":{"id":"3576021805916546","authorId":"3576021805916546","name":"幻想的仙人","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1a107a9d65401870a74fa2225f1d9697","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3576021805916546","authorIdStr":"3576021805916546"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"It's time to pay a close attention to this","listText":"It's time to pay a close attention to this","text":"It's time to pay a close attention to this","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b5e84d7245052110c8ed722a880df7c3","width":"1080","height":"2861"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/131659986","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":141,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":374275272,"gmtCreate":1619451975296,"gmtModify":1704724179571,"author":{"id":"3576021805916546","authorId":"3576021805916546","name":"幻想的仙人","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1a107a9d65401870a74fa2225f1d9697","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3576021805916546","authorIdStr":"3576021805916546"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Carry on.....","listText":"Carry on.....","text":"Carry on.....","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3720d6611b27945089b8fc51fcc9c44b","width":"1080","height":"1920"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/374275272","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":192,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":343116837,"gmtCreate":1617688456529,"gmtModify":1704701808512,"author":{"id":"3576021805916546","authorId":"3576021805916546","name":"幻想的仙人","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1a107a9d65401870a74fa2225f1d9697","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3576021805916546","authorIdStr":"3576021805916546"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Watchlist and observe guys.
