Quarterly earnings season also ramps up as some of the big banks report results.

Market participants are bracing for another historically hot reading on inflation in the latest CPI data, due out on Wednesday. On a year-over-year basis, consumer prices likely surged by 7.1% in December, based on Bloomberg consensus data, accelerating even further from November's 6.8% year-over-year clip. This would mark the fastest rate since 1982, when CPI rose as much as 8.4% on a year-over-year basis.

And on a month-over-month basis, consumer prices likely rose by 0.4% in December, slowing from November's 0.8% rise but still marking an eighteenth consecutive month of increases.

"Recent months have seen consistent upside surprises as inflation has increasingly broadened out, and it's now the case that seven of the last nine CPI releases have seen the monthly headline increase come in above the consensus among economists on Bloomberg, which just demonstrates how this has taken a lot of people by surprise," Deutsche Bank economists Henry Allen and Jim Reid said in a note.

"Our U.S. economists are projecting that year-on-year inflation will move higher once again, with an increase to +7.0%," they added. "Interestingly though, they think we could be at a turning point with December marking the peak in the year-on-year readings, which they then project will fall back over 2022 and be at +3.0% by this December ahead."

Excluding more volatile food and energy prices, consumer prices likely rose at a 5.4% year-over-year rate in December, also speeding from November's 4.9% pace and coming in at the fastest since 1991.

While price increases have been broad-based in the recovering economy, some economists said rising vehicle prices will likely be one of the main drivers of inflation at year-end.

"The main story will be the increase in autos inflation, with used cars the primary driver," Bank of America economists led by Ethan Harris wrote in a note Friday. "Manheim data showed wholesale used car prices spiking 9.2% [month-over-month] in October, following a 5.3% increase in September. Given a roughly 2-month lag, this sends a signal of incredible strength for CPI used cars this month."

Used car and truck prices had risen 2.5% month-on-month in November, matching the prior month's rise, based on BLS data.

"Outside of autos, we expect further gains in household furnishings and supplies and apparel, reflecting tight supply chains and fewer discounts as the holiday shopping season draws to a close," Harris added.

The December CPI will also be carefully parsed by investors as they gauge the next moves by the Federal Reserve, as some officials eye a quicker shift away from accommodative policies to rein in inflation.

Last week, the Fed's December meeting minutes suggested some officials favored speeding the central bank's asset-purchase tapering and hastening the timing of an initial interest rate hike from current near-zero levels. And against a backdrop of a "stronger economic outlook [and] higher inflation," some officials also suggested they were contemplating the start of reducing the nearly $9 trillion in assets on the central bank's balance sheet. Hints that the Fed was considering tightening policy in the near-term sent equity markets into a tailspin last week.

"The market does have to adjust to what is a surprise in terms of how aggressive the Federal Reserve may be in managing the economy around inflation," Rob Haworth, U.S. Bank Wealth Management senior investment strategist, told Yahoo Finance Livelast week.

Investors may also receive more commentary about how key members of the Federal Reserve expect to approach inflation with their monetary policy toolkit in two confirmation hearings before Congress this week. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's nomination hearing for a second term is set to take place before the Senate Banking Committee on Tuesday — or a day before the December CPI is released. However, Fed Governor Lael Brainard's nomination hearing to become vice chair of the Fed will take place on Thursday before the Senate Banking Committee, after the release of the latest inflation data.

Bank earnings

This week, investors will also see a pick-up in earnings reports, as some of the largest U.S. banks deliver their quarterly results at the end of the week. JPMorgan Chase (JPM), Citigroup (C) and Wells Fargo (WFC) are each slated to report Friday morning before the opening bell.

The results come following a strong run for bank stocks, with financials currently the second-best performing sector in the S&P 500 in 2022, after energy. TheXLF, or exchange-traded fund tracking the financials sector, hit a record high on Friday and logged its best week since February 2021.

Expectations for higher interest rates this year have been one major factor lifting these shares, given that banks' core lending businesses benefit from rising rates. On Friday, the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield rose to approximately 1.8%, or its highest level since January 2020. And robust market activity over the past year likely also helped further lift banks' trading operations.

"As far as the financials go, we think they're going to be pretty good. This last year has seen a lot of trading activity," Scott Ladner, Horizon Investments chief investment officer, told Yahoo Finance Live on Friday."And as we've seen, what's going on right now with respect to yield curve, the yield curve steepened this week."

As fourth-quarter earnings begin to ramp up, many analysts are expecting to see another solid reporting season. However, the estimates are also taking into account slowing momentum after soaring earnings growth rates from earlier last year, helped in large part by easy comparisons to 2020's pandemic-depressed levels.

S&P 500 earnings in aggregate are expected to grow 21.7% for the fourth-quarter of 2021, according to data from FactSet's John Butters as of Friday. If earnings come in as expected, this would mark a fourth consecutive quarter that earnings growth tops 20%.

Economic calendar

Monday:Wholesale inventories, month-over-month, November final (1.2% expected, 1.2% in previous print)

Tuesday:NFIB Small Business Optimism, December (98.5 expected, 98.4 in November)

Wednesday:MBA Mortgage Applications, week ended January 7 (-5.6% during prior week); Consumer Price Index (CPI), month-over-month, December (0.4% expected, 0.8% in November); CPI excluding food and energy, month-over-month, December (0.5% expected, 0.5% in November); CPI year-over-year, December (7.1% expected, 6.8% in November); CPI excluding food and energy, year-over-year, December (5.4% expected, 4.9% in November); Monthly budget statement, December (-$191.3 billion expected); U.S. Federal Reserve Releases Beige Book

Thursday:Producer Price Index (PPI), month-over-month, December (0.4% expected, 0.8% in November); PPI excluding food and energy, month-over-month, December (0.4% expected, 0.7% in November); PPI year-over-year, December (9.8% expected, 9.6% in November); PPI excluding food and energy, year-over-year, December (8.0% expected, 7.7% in November); Initial jobless claims, week ended January 8 (210,000 expected, 207,000 during prior week); Continuing claims, week ended January 1 (1.754 million during prior week)

Friday:Retail sales advance, month-over-month, December (0.0% expected, 0.3% in November); Retail sales excluding autos and gas, month-over-month, December (-0.1% expected, 0.2% in November); Import price index, month-over-month, December (0.2%. expected, 0.7% in November); Capacity utilization, December (77.0% expected); Industrial production, month-over-month, December (0.3% expected, 0.5% in November); University of Michigan sentiment, January preliminary (70.0 expected, 70.6 in December)

Earnings calendar

Monday:No notable reports scheduled for release

Tuesday:No notable reports scheduled for release

Wednesday:Jefferies Financial Corp. Given a roughly 2-month lag, this sends a signal of incredible strength for CPI used cars this month.\"Used car and truck prices had risen 2.5% month-on-month in November, matching the prior month's rise, based on BLS data.\"Outside of autos, we expect further gains in household furnishings and supplies and apparel, reflecting tight supply chains and fewer discounts as the holiday shopping season draws to a close,\" Harris added. The December CPI will also be carefully parsed by investors as they gauge the next moves by the Federal Reserve, as some officials eye a quicker shift away from accommodative policies to rein in inflation.Last week, the Fed's December meeting minutes suggested some officials favored speeding the central bank's asset-purchase tapering and hastening the timing of an initial interest rate hike from current near-zero levels. And against a backdrop of a \"stronger economic outlook [and] higher inflation,\" some officials also suggested they were contemplating the start of reducing the nearly $9 trillion in assets on the central bank's balance sheet. Hints that the Fed was considering tightening policy in the near-term sent equity markets into a tailspin last week.\"The market does have to adjust to what is a surprise in terms of how aggressive the Federal Reserve may be in managing the economy around inflation,\" Rob Haworth, U.S. Bank Wealth Management senior investment strategist, told Yahoo Finance Livelast week.Investors may also receive more commentary about how key members of the Federal Reserve expect to approach inflation with their monetary policy toolkit in two confirmation hearings before Congress this week. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's nomination hearing for a second term is set to take place before the Senate Banking Committee on Tuesday — or a day before the December CPI is released. However, Fed Governor Lael Brainard's nomination hearing to become vice chair of the Fed will take place on Thursday before the Senate Banking Committee, after the release of the latest inflation data.Bank earningsThis week, investors will also see a pick-up in earnings reports, as some of the largest U.S. banks deliver their quarterly results at the end of the week. JPMorgan Chase (JPM), Citigroup (C) and Wells Fargo (WFC) are each slated to report Friday morning before the opening bell. The results come following a strong run for bank stocks, with financials currently the second-best performing sector in the S&P 500 in 2022, after energy. TheXLF, or exchange-traded fund tracking the financials sector, hit a record high on Friday and logged its best week since February 2021.Expectations for higher interest rates this year have been one major factor lifting these shares, given that banks' core lending businesses benefit from rising rates. On Friday, the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield rose to approximately 1.8%, or its highest level since January 2020. And robust market activity over the past year likely also helped further lift banks' trading operations.\"As far as the financials go, we think they're going to be pretty good. This last year has seen a lot of trading activity,\" Scott Ladner, Horizon Investments chief investment officer, told Yahoo Finance Live on Friday.\"And as we've seen, what's going on right now with respect to yield curve, the yield curve steepened this week.\"As fourth-quarter earnings begin to ramp up, many analysts are expecting to see another solid reporting season. However, the estimates are also taking into account slowing momentum after soaring earnings growth rates from earlier last year, helped in large part by easy comparisons to 2020's pandemic-depressed levels.S&P 500 earnings in aggregate are expected to grow 21.7% for the fourth-quarter of 2021, according to data from FactSet's John Butters as of Friday. If earnings come in as expected, this would mark a fourth consecutive quarter that earnings growth tops 20%.Economic calendarMonday:Wholesale inventories, month-over-month, November final (1.2% expected, 1.2% in previous print)Tuesday:NFIB Small Business Optimism, December (98.5 expected, 98.4 in November)Wednesday:MBA Mortgage Applications, week ended January 7 (-5.6% during prior week); Consumer Price Index (CPI), month-over-month, December (0.4% expected, 0.8% in November); CPI excluding food and energy, month-over-month, December (0.5% expected, 0.5% in November); CPI year-over-year, December (7.1% expected, 6.8% in November); CPI excluding food and energy, year-over-year, December (5.4% expected, 4.9% in November); Monthly budget statement, December (-$191.3 billion expected); U.S. Federal Reserve Releases Beige BookThursday:Producer Price Index (PPI), month-over-month, December (0.4% expected, 0.8% in November); PPI excluding food and energy, month-over-month, December (0.4% expected, 0.7% in November); PPI year-over-year, December (9.8% expected, 9.6% in November); PPI excluding food and energy, year-over-year, December (8.0% expected, 7.7% in November); Initial jobless claims, week ended January 8 (210,000 expected, 207,000 during prior week); Continuing claims, week ended January 1 (1.754 million during prior week)Friday:Retail sales advance, month-over-month, December (0.0% expected, 0.3% in November); Retail sales excluding autos and gas, month-over-month, December (-0.1% expected, 0.2% in November); Import price index, month-over-month, December (0.2%. expected, 0.7% in November); Capacity utilization, December (77.0% expected); Industrial production, month-over-month, December (0.3% expected, 0.5% in November); University of Michigan sentiment, January preliminary (70.0 expected, 70.6 in December)Earnings calendarMonday:No notable reports scheduled for releaseTuesday:No notable reports scheduled for releaseWednesday:Jefferies Financial Corp. During the first quarter,Tesla sold $272 million worth of “digital assets,”which helped it reduce operating losses by $101 million, the company revealed in its earnings statement.\nMusk’s comments on social media about cryptocurrency often send prices soaring or plummeting, but appeared to have little effect Sunday. It hasn’t provided revenue guidance since the start of the pandemic, citing uncertainty. This is Apple’s second quarter in a row with double-digit growth in all product categories. Apple CFO Luca Maestri told analysts that the company expects June quarter revenue to rise by double digits year-over-year, although it faces some supply shortages due to the worldwide chip shortage.

Apple has said in the past months that its business has been boosted by the pandemic as consumers and businesses bought computers to work and entertain themselves while at home. But Apple’s strong results in the quarter suggest that the trend may persist as more economies open up.

Or, as Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement: “This quarter reflects both the enduring ways our products have helped our users meet this moment in their own lives, as well as the optimism consumers seem to feel about better days ahead for all of us.”

Mac sales were up 70%, and Cook said that the result was “fueled by” the company’s introduction of its Mac laptops that used its own M1 chips for longer battery life, instead of processors sold by Intel. iPad sales were up nearly 79% year-over-year.

Neither of those results include iPad Pro or iMac models the company announced in March, which are expected to drive additional demand.

“We’re seeing strong first-time buyers on the Mac … it continues to run just south of 50%,” Cook told CNBC’s Josh Lipton. “And, in China, it’s even higher than that … it’s more around two-thirds. And that speaks to people preferring to work on the Mac.”

Apple’s iPhone also reported strong results this quarter, quelling fears that the current annual cycle could slow down. Last year, Apple released iPhones with a new exterior design and 5G support, which many investors believed could prompt a major upgrade cycle, which this quarter’s results indicate.

In greater China, which includes the mainland, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, Apple’s revenue increased over 87% year-over-year to $17.73 billion, although the comparison is to a quarter last year in which China was largely shut down in the early days of the pandemic. Every other geographical category, including the Americas and Europe, were also up on an annual basis.

Apple’s high-margin services business, including iCloud, App Store, and subscriptions like Apple Music, also showed 26.7% growth.

One metric that Apple uses to show the growth in services is the number of subscriptions it has, which not only include its own subscriptions like Apple One, but also subscriptions through its App Store.

“We now have over 660 million paid subscriptions across the services on the platform, and that’s up 40 million from the previous quarter, which is an acceleration from 35 million,” Cook told CNBC.

However, Apple’s App Store has been challenged by lawmakers and companies that say it costs too much and has too much power. A closely-watched trial with Fortnite maker Epic Games over App Store policies kicks off next week.

“The App Store has been an economic miracle. Last year, the estimates are that there was over a half a trillion dollars of economic activity because of the store. For Productivity and Business Processes, she projected revenue of $13.35 billion to $13.6 billion. Morgan analyst Mark Murphy came away from his own new survey of resellers of Microsoft products encouraged about the outlook. Murphy rates Microsoft at Overweight and has a target of $245 for the stock price.

Wedbush analyst Dan Ives forecast “another masterpiece quarter,” driven by growth of at least 45% from Azure, which he thinks is taking market share from Amazon Web Services. He wrote that a combination of a survey of resellers and channel checks made him more confident that Microsoft can propel revenue across all three primary business segments, with strength in personal computer demand from both consumers and businesses, robust upgrade activity on server software, and continued strength in Azure as a result of “continued strong enterprise consumption growth.”
","source":"lsy1601382232898","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Microsoft Nears $2 Trillion Market Cap. He says the company is likely benefiting from a combination of strong IT demand and continuing strength in PC shipments.“We continue to see Microsoft’s combination of expanding Azure scope, broad enterprise application innovation, and aggressive bundling seeing success in the market,” he wrote. “Nearly all North American Microsoft distributors/resellers we spoke with reported Microsoft channel revenue on or above plan.”J.P. Morgan analyst Mark Murphy came away from his own new survey of resellers of Microsoft products encouraged about the outlook. He says those companies’ quarterly sales of Microsoft goods came in an average of 3.3% above their expectations, driven by improving enterprise demand. He reported strength across the company’s enterprise product lines, with growth in Azure, Teams, Office 365, and security products, among other places. Murphy rates Microsoft at Overweight and has a target of $245 for the stock price.Wedbush analyst Dan Ives forecast “another masterpiece quarter,” driven by growth of at least 45% from Azure, which he thinks is taking market share from Amazon Web Services. He said the current work-from-home environment is encouraging more businesses to make strategic moves toward cloud-based operations “with Microsoft across the board with Azure growth remaining brisk.” He maintained an Outperform rating, with a target of $300 for the share price.Citi analyst Tyler Radke last week reiterated a Buy rating on Microsoft shares, lifting his price target to $302, from $292, and setting a “positive catalyst watch” on the stock ahead of the results. He wrote that a combination of a survey of resellers and channel checks made him more confident that Microsoft can propel revenue across all three primary business segments, with strength in personal computer demand from both consumers and businesses, robust upgrade activity on server software, and continued strength in Azure as a result of “continued strong enterprise consumption growth.”","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":67,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9006052794,"gmtCreate":1641562911965,"gmtModify":1676533629404,"author":{"id":"3576119800068743","authorId":"3576119800068743","authorIdStr":"3576119800068743","name":"weiliat","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1ac8cb0d9a81d56d9e0f2ee477362395","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3576119800068743"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Good ","listText":"Good ","text":"Good","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9006052794","repostId":"1198195110","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1198195110","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Providing stock market headlines, business news, financials and earnings ","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Tiger Newspress","id":"1079075236","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8274c5b9d4c2852bfb1c4d6ce16c68ba"},"pubTimestamp":1641562441,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1198195110?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-01-07 21:34","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Hiring Falters in December as Payrolls Rise Only 199,000, though the Unemployment Fell to 3.9%","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1198195110","media":"Tiger Newspress","summary":"The U.S. economy added far fewer jobs than expected in December just as the nation was grappling wit","content":"

The U.S. economy added far fewer jobs than expected in December just as the nation was grappling with a massive surge in Covid cases, the Labor Department said Friday.

Nonfarm payrolls grew by 199,000, while the unemployment rate fell to 3.9%, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data. AMC said that it expects to lose $567.2 million to $572.2 million on revenue of approximately $148.3 million. AMC's stock has not suffered as much as its finances in recent months, as it has been targeted by individual investors who have gathered on Reddit to collectively purchase options and shares in bedraggled stocks like videogame retailer GameStop Corp. $(GME)$ and former cellphone giants Nokia Corp. We are thinking about it, but we haven't made any decisions yet.\"\nAMC also disclosed in Tuesday's filing that as of March 31, 585 of its 590 U.S. theaters had reopened at limited capacity of 15% to 60%, and 97 of 354 international theaters it leases or runs in partnership with others had reopened at 25% to 50% capacity.\nShares dipped between 1% and 2% in the extended session following the disclosure Tuesday evening. (NOKIA.HE) and BlackBerry Ltd. (BB.T).\nAMC stock has gained more than 300% in the past six months, as the S&P 500 index has increased 23.5%. The company's market capitalization was higher than $5 billion at Tuesday's closing price of $11.46.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":184,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":378882974,"gmtCreate":1619015771698,"gmtModify":1704718376910,"author":{"id":"3576119800068743","authorId":"3576119800068743","authorIdStr":"3576119800068743","name":"weiliat","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1ac8cb0d9a81d56d9e0f2ee477362395","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3576119800068743"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Because people turn into$Walt Disney(DIS)$ attractive subscription price and content ","listText":"Because people turn into$Walt Disney(DIS)$ attractive subscription price and content ","text":"Because people turn into$Walt Disney(DIS)$ attractive subscription price and content","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/378882974","repostId":"1122748494","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1122748494","pubTimestamp":1618997556,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1122748494?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-04-21 17:32","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Netflix: A Rare Misstep","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1122748494","media":"seekingalpha","summary":"Netflix notes that it wasn't churn that's dipping its revenue growth rates, but a lackluster user acquisition in the period.Questions linger on whether or not Netflix will return to +20% growth rates. Yet, long-term shareholders shouldn't be too disappointed with its solid Q1 2020 performance.
\n
Investors have always been focusing on Netflix's subscriber numbers, but I assert that focusing on thatdetailmisses the forest for the trees.
\n
The big story here I declare is that Netflix is expertly managed and that, rightnow, investors are being asked to pay approximately 8x forward sales for Netflix - arguably its lowest valuation for a while.
\n
The short story is,there are lots of exciting drivers for Netflix, and that investors shouldn't get overly caught up in a single choppy quarter.
\n
Netflix Results: What Happened?
\n
Netflix's results were strong, yet the stock sold off, why? The big takeaway from the commentators was that Netflix's subscriber addition for the quarter ahead is pointing towards just 1 million.
\n
This is the lowest net addition in more than 5 years, with the recent lowest net addition of subscribers being 2.2 million during Q3 2020. However, I believe that there's more at play than initially meets the eye here and thatcontextis important.
\n
Accordingly, readers should keep in mind the shaky market we've seen the past few days, with tech, in particular, being hit hard.
\n
Moreover, Netflix was perceived by investors as one of the companies that were early-to-benefit from the COVID environment, with investors amply rewarding its stock very early in the pandemic.
\n
For their part, CEO Reed Hastings and team had been very consistent in their message throughout COVID, that Netflix was pulling forward subscribers and that there would at some point be a ''pause'' in the pace of net additions.
\n
Moving on, Netflix has been consistent in its message throughout the past year, although it has acknowledged that Disney (DIS) and Amazon (AMZN) Video, as well as, other streaming platforms are a competition to Netflix, that they consider this view to be too narrow. Indeed, Netflix notes that gaming and user-generated content such as YouTube (GOOG)(GOOGL) and TikTok (BDNCE) are also sources of competition.
\n
To that end, Netflix noted that churn levels werelowerin Q1 2021 than they were back in Q1 2020. In fact, Hastings remarks that the problem is down to a lower user acquisition profile on the back of a lack of fresh content slate - that is light due to COVID impacting its production schedule and that investors should anticipate a heavier content slate in H2 2021.
\n
Revenue Growth Rates are Steady
\n
Source: author's calculations, shareholder letter
\n
Netflix obviously had a terrific 2020 as you can see above, but as we look ahead to Q2 2021, we can see that its revenue growth rates are pointing towards dipping below that infamous 20% hurdle.
\n
For many investors, the drop from 30% to 20% has less of a psychological impact than the drop from mid 20s% to sub 20s%. For investors, that now squarely points towards Netflix no longer being a high growth engine, but more of a mature company.
\n
Personally, if I was a Netflix shareholder, this wouldn't be the set of results I would throw in the towel. That's the great thing about investing alongside the best management teams - they are incredibly innovative.
\n
In fact, in the shareholder letter, Hastings reminds investors that Netflix has a long history of innovating, as it migrated from a DVD-by-mail towards a streaming company, as well as, a licensor of second window content to a producer of original content.
\n
Again, that's the great aspect of investing alongside owner-operated companies, they are incredibly driven and competitive.
