The weak environment, poor performance in pre-COVID-19 days, and an overleveraged balance sheet are making us believe that the growth of its stock is limited at this stage, as the short squeeze is likely to be over.</p>\n<p><b>Bankruptcy is Still on the Table</b></p>\n<p>AMC is down over 40% since our last&nbsp;article&nbsp;on the company came out in late January and we believe that the stock has even more room to fall. The major problem of AMC is that it had entered the pandemic in a weak financial state and it will exit it in an even worse shape than before. Right now data&nbsp;shows&nbsp;that the company’s 3-year revenue CAGR is -37.46%, while its 3-year stock performance is -42.47%, and it’s unlikely that the situation will improve in the next couple of years.</p>\n<p>The reality is that AMC was on its way to&nbsp;bankruptcy, but it was able to extend its lifetime thanks to the help of public investors, who began to prop up its share price at the beginning of this year and executed a short squeeze, which pushed the company’s stock to new highs. However, while AMC was able to avoid insolvency, the major winners of this appreciation were big investors such as Silver Lake and Wanda Group, which were able to quickly profit from such a move and decrease their stakes in the company. As a result, public investors now&nbsp;own&nbsp;over 80% of the company’s stock, while institutions and the company’s insiders hold only ~10% and ~0.5% of the total equity in the company, respectively.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/111755e3bfea903a0e51c45485aeeece\" tg-width=\"1280\" tg-height=\"443\"><span>Chart: Seeking Alpha</span></p>\n<p>The company’s latest earnings&nbsp;results&nbsp;show that the business is far away from returning to normalcy. In Q4 its revenues of $162.5 million were down 88.8% Y/Y, as its receipts and attendance were down 89% Y/Y and 91.3% Y/Y, respectively. On top of that, its adjusted EBITDA for the period was -$327.5 million against $269.1 million a year ago, while its net loss in Q4 was -$946.1 million against a net loss of only -$13.5 million a year ago.</p>\n<p>Due to such a poor performance, AMC was able to survive solely through secondary offerings, which&nbsp;diluted&nbsp;its shareholders by around 330% in recent quarters. The company was able to raise ~$2.2 billion since the beginning of the pandemic, out of which ~$1 billion was raised in the last few months when its stock began to appreciate on heavy volume. However, that liquidity might not be enough in the long-term to avoid bankruptcy, since in 2020 alone the business&nbsp;had&nbsp;over $300 in annual interest expenses and by the end of the year, it had over $5 billion in debt. While during normal times, AMC would’ve been able to service that debt and deleverage its balance sheet by driving sales and generating positive FCF, it’s unlikely that it’ll be able to do so in the current environment since its business in the next couple of years is projected to not to return to its 2019 levels.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b95811a0d70a28646d816e042f448373\" tg-width=\"865\" tg-height=\"368\"><span>Source: Seeking Alpha</span></p>\n<p>AMC will not be able to return to its pre-COVID-19 levels anytime soon simply due to the fact that a large group of consumers will now prefer to watch movies on their big screens at home rather than go to an enclosed public space and risk getting sick. Considering that some major production companies recently&nbsp;decided&nbsp;to distribute their movies via streaming platforms the same day those movies are released in cinemas, it’s hard to imagine how the overall theater business will be able to recover in the foreseeable future. With such a change in consumer habits, it’s unlikely that AMC will be able to improve its top-line performance and generate positive FCF to decrease its high debt burden.</p>\n<p>Another downside of AMC is that there’s still a possibility that it could become insolvent next year. In its latest 10-K&nbsp;filing&nbsp;the company said that its capacity needs to be at ~90% of pre-COVID-19 levels in the next few quarters in order to not run out of cash next year. Considering that the street expects the company to perform poorly in the near term, it’s unlikely that AMC will be able to reach such capacity levels and improve its operational performance, so there’s every reason to believe that it’ll be looking for additional liquidity. If AMC is unable to find enough liquidity, then the restructuring of its debt will take place. While the company’s CEO&nbsp;pledged&nbsp;not to offer those shares in 2021, there’s every reason to believe that a dilution will happen next year since the overall business is not going to recover in the next few months. However, the problem is that public investors now control most of the company’s shares, so there’s a risk that the majority of them decide to vote against the authorization to issue new shares in order to prevent a depreciation of the company’s stock. On top of that, it will be significantly harder for public investors to execute another short squeeze with so many new shares outstanding.</p>\n<p>Considering all of this, we believe that the bankruptcy of AMC is still on the table, as the company might be unable to improve its top-line performance and generate positive FCF to service its debt in the foreseeable future. Entering January, no public company had a higher percentage of shares held short, relative to its float. Because of this short interest, a flood of buyers were able to execute an epic short squeeze.</p><p>Unfortunately, most of the Reddit rally stocks have poor underlying fundamentals and/or a dubious long-term outlook. When it comes to GameStop, its biggest issue was waiting too long to focus on digital gaming. Even with its renewed focus on e-commerce, total sales for the company declined, once again, during the most recent holiday season. Further, GameStop is almost certainly staring down its fourth consecutive annual loss in 2021.</p><p>If there is some good news here, it's that GameStop isn't a lost cause. Eventually, it'll close enough stores to reduce its expenses to the point where it's profitable again. But there's a big difference between growth with a profit and backpedaling into a profit. AMC recently announced that 99% of its theaters would be open by March 26.</p><p>However, this optimism looks highly flawed. Many of the company's theaters are still facing capacity restrictions, and there are no guarantees that the coronavirus pandemic will officially end in 2021. New variants of the disease, along with vaccine holdouts, threaten to push herd immunity and a return to normal further down the road.</p><p>The company's solvency is also a potential concern. Even with more than $1 billion in cash on hand, Wall Street is expecting AMC to lose more than $1.7 billion, total, over the next two years. This implies the need to issue more dilutive stock or more debt.</p><p>As the icing on the cake, AMC is also losing some of its new release exclusivity to streaming service providers. As a cryptocurrency miner, Riot uses high-powered computers to validate groups of transactions (known as blocks) on Bitcoin's network. For validating blocks, Riot is given a block reward totaling 6.25 Bitcoin (worth about $365,000). In short, the higher Bitcoin goes, the more these block rewards are worth.</p><p>While this sounds like a pretty straightforward investment, it's not that simple. For example, the asset Riot is \"mining\" has had three separate instances over the past decade where it's lost at least 80% of its value. It's not clear if mining companies could survive such a protracted downtrend in Bitcoin.</p><p>It's equally concerning that Riot Blockchain's future is entirely tethered to the performance of Bitcoin. This is an operating model that's pretty much devoid of innovation and is constantly facing a growing number of competitors. Investors also appear to be betting on the U.S. legalizing cannabis at the federal level. Doing so would allow Canadian marijuana stocks like Sundial to enter the far more lucrative U.S. weed market.</p><p>But if there's something tenured investors are very familiar with, it's the idea that all next-big-thing investments have losers. Even though marijuana is expected to be one of the fastest-growing industries this decade, Sundial hasn't demonstrated anything from an operational perspective to suggest that it'd be a winner.</p><p>One thing Sundial has done successfully is drown its existing investors in a sea of new shares. In a roughly five-month span, the company issued more than 1.15 billion shares via at-the-market offerings, registered direct offerings, and debt-to-equity swaps. Will this second rally gain momentum? There's a lot to prove heading into the telltale financial update. The air is getting thin as the stock got thick</h2>\n<p>A lot has happened since the last time GameStop discussed quarterly results. The stock closed at $16.95 moments before the video game retailer announced its fresh financials on Dec. 8. The market didn't like it, sending GameStop stock 19% lower the next day. The stock has been a 14-bagger since then through Monday's close.</p>\n<p>Fundamentally speaking, some things have only gotten worse since early December, with the stock in the low teens. Three months ago, analysts thought GameStop would be earning $1.66 a share for the seasonally potent holiday quarter. The consensus now is a profit of $1.35 a share.</p>\n<p>GameStop was upbeat about how its fiscal fourth quarter ending in January was starting. Comps had risen an eye-popping 16.5% in November, fueled by big-ticket sales of new PS5 consoles. Here's how Robinhood investors can buy them anyway.","content":"<p>There are a lot of interesting investment opportunities today, but perhaps none more exciting than cannabis -- specifically, U.S-based cannabis companies. Though marijuana is still federally illegal, many U.S. companies operating in states where marijuana use is legal are seeing booming financial results. Furthermore, the prospect of potential regulatory rollbacks means U.S. pot companies could also see improvements in their cost structures as well sometime during this administration.</p>\n<p>Yet unfortunately, many U.S. investors are shut out from this promising opportunity.</p>\n<p>Because cannabis is still federally illegal, the stocks of U.S.-based cannabis companies are only listed on Canadian exchanges or over the counter, as they're not allowed to trade on the New York Stock Exchange or Nasdaq. And many popular brokerages like Robinhood, which is geared toward younger retail investors who would be prime candidates to invest in U.S. pot stocks, don't allow trading on Canadian exchanges or in over-the-counter stocks.</p>\n<p>Of course, cannabis is legal in Canada, and Canadian pot stocks <i>are</i> allowed on the NYSE and Nasdaq, and are thus available to all U.S. investors, Robinhooders included.</p>\n<p>Since U.S. multi-state operators (MSOs) are by and large superior businesses to their Canadian counterparts, this topsy-turvy state of affairs is really frustrating. Many U.S. retail investors appear to now be chasing stocks of inferior Canadian businesses such as <b>Sundial Growers</b> (NASDAQ:SNDL) in the hopes of a meme-stock pop.</p>\n<p>Fortunately, if you're a Robinhood trader looking for a way to spend some of your $1,400 stimulus check on U.S. cannabis stocks, there's now a new way around this frustrating conundrum.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://g.foolcdn.com/image/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fg.foolcdn.com%2Feditorial%2Fimages%2F617984%2Fgettyimages-1202478473.jpg&amp;w=700&amp;op=resize\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>Image source: Getty Images.</p>\n<p><b>The case for U.S. pot stocks</b></p>\n<p>Some U.S. citizens are receiving their $1,400 stimulus checks right now, which is a much-needed infusion for many in order to pay their bills and bolster their emergency funds. Of course, these stimulus checks are also going to many who are gainfully employed, and who will either save or invest them.</p>\n<p>Provided you've paid your bills and credit card debts, established an emergency fund, and are planning to invest part or all of your stimulus check, there are several reasons U.S. cannabis stocks may be attractive candidates for your investment dollars -- especially for younger investors who can afford to invest in higher-risk, higher-upside securities.</p>\n<p>For <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> thing, the U.S. cannabis market is huge and growing. According to preliminary tax revenue estimates from Leafly, legal U.S. cannabis sales grew 71% in 2020 to around $18.3 billion.</p>\n<p>But remember, these are just <i>legal</i> sales. Analysts at Cowen&nbsp;estimate the overall U.S. cannabis market is currently $61 billion when including illicit sales. As cannabis gains greater acceptance as an alternative to alcohol and opioids, Cowen estimates the market will grow to $100 billion by 2030 -- that's 25% higher than the initial $80 billion estimate Cowen made in 2019.</p>\n<p>So if cannabis is eventually decriminalized and then legalized in the U.S., this is a market that can achieve technology-like growth, <i>increasing five times</i> over the next decade. While I wouldn't expect legalization in the near term, regulatory rollbacks such as the SAFE banking act or the STATES Act, which would ease banking and tax restrictions, or even the MORE Act, which would decriminalize marijuana, could happen during this term.</p>\n<p>We can already see evidence of pot stock hypergrowth in the numbers of several U.S. multi-state operators. For instance, the largest U.S. cannabis operator, <b>Curaleaf Holdings</b> (OTC:CURLF), just reported its 2020 results. Revenue grew 184% in 2020, while gross margin on cannabis sales increased from 41% to 47%. Adjusted EBITDA surged a stunning 456% to $144.1 million, with EBITDA margin expanding from 10.3% to 22%.</p>\n<p>And that's just <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> example -- Curaleaf's U.S. peers also reported similarly stellar growth throughout 2020. With limited licenses available in many states, many of these first movers enjoy somewhat protected positions with limited competition, allowing them to protect their margins as well.</p>\n<p><b>U.S. MSO results are a stark contrast to Canadian growers like Sundial</b></p>\n<p>This is in stark contrast to Canada's pot companies, which are growing slower, operate in a market just a fraction of the size of the U.S., and have seen gross margin compression after the Canadian market became vastly oversupplied.</p>\n<p>Perhaps no one is feeling the pressure more than the smaller players like Sundial Growers. In its quarter ended in September 2020, Sundial actually saw its revenue <i>decrease</i> and gross margin go <i>negative</i>. Through the first nine months of 2020, Sundial racked up 175 million Canadian dollars in EBITDA losses.</p>\n<p>While Sundial is one of the worst-performing companies from an operational standpoint, even the best-performing Canadian companies such as <b>Canopy Growth</b> (NASDAQ:CGC) are reporting much lower growth than their U.S. counterparts. Last quarter, Canopy grew revenue just 23%, with an adjusted EBITDA loss of CA$68 million.</p>\n<p>Canopy and Curaleaf will actually generate similar levels of revenue this year, but Curaleaf is growing eight times the rate of Canopy. Even more incredible? Curaleaf is cheaper than Canopy in terms of market cap, at $10.9 billion versus Canopy at $12.9 billion.</p>\n<p>Clearly, there are a lot of investors who can only buy the Canadian stocks for their cannabis industry exposure; otherwise there wouldn't be this strange disparity.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b9cb5de21d079e5a39cc625b0b77b8f0\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>Image source: Getty Images.</p>\n<p><b>But now Robinhooders have a way to invest in U.S. pot stocks</b></p>\n<p>Fortunately, there's a new way for Robinhood investors to get exposure to U.S. cannabis stocks. The <b>AdvisorShares Pure U.S. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/THCX\">Cannabis ETF</a> </b>(NYSEMKT:MSOS), launched in September 2020, is an exchange-traded fund (ETF) that purely buys U.S. cannabis companies, with 81.9% of the fund dedicated to U.S. multi-state operators. In fact, Curaleaf is currently the fund's largest holding, at an 11.51% allocation. Only six months after launch, the fund has attracted over $1 billion in assets under management (AUM), and it's up 26.5% year to date, versus just 4.8% for the <b>S&amp;P 500</b>.</p>\n<p>The Pure U.S. Cannabis ETF trades on the NYSE Arca exchange, a specialized exchange for ETFs. While headquartered in Chicago, NYSE Arca is a subsidiary of the New York Stock Exchange. The good news is that Robinhood investors and other U.S. brokerages can invest in NYSE Arca securities, including MSOS, finally giving Robinhood investors the chance to gain exposure to U.S. pot stocks.</p>\n<p><b>Risks and fees regarding MSOS</b></p>\n<p>Of course, there are a few potential drawbacks to the Pure U.S. Cannabis ETF. First, it's actively managed, which means that you are counting on portfolio manager Dan Ahrens to make good active management decisions for you. However, based on its current holdings and allocation, I wouldn't worry too much. There are only so many large, high-quality U.S. MSOs, and the fund currently owns all of the best ones that I can see. Though I don't own Curaleaf, I do own <b>Trulieve Cannabis</b>&nbsp;(my brokerage allows OTC trading), the fund's second-largest holding, as well as several other holdings in the ETF.</p>\n<p>Second, there's a 0.60% management fee and a 0.74% expense fee for the ETF, so there is some extra cost associated with holding MSOS, as opposed to just buying these stocks outright. Still, that's a relatively modest fee compared with the superior value you're getting in U.S. pot stocks over Canadian pot stocks.</p>\n<p>Despite these concerns, the AdvisorShares Pure U.S. Cannabis ETF is an efficient way to get diversified exposure to the U.S. cannabis industry, which could be a fine destination for your $1,400 stimulus check, if you're looking to invest it. Regulations are likely to be rolled back either in part or in whole by the Biden administration, which would greatly benefit these stocks even further. And a record high 68% of Americans favor cannabis legalization. The over-55s surveyed said they’d put only 16% into stocks.\nIn all, the online survey of 430 retail investors found that respondents plan to put a large chunk (37%) of any forthcoming stimulus directly into stocks, which could represent a sizable inflow into the market of $170 billion, Deutsche Bank estimated.\nThe report, authored by Deutsche Bank Strategist Jim Reid and Research Associate Raj Bhattacharyya and first published late last month, focused on a growing trend of younger people getting into retail investment.\nThe overall sample had nearly equal representation of those under 34 (41%) and 34-54 (37%) and a somewhat smaller share of those over 55 years of age, Deutsche Bank noted. In terms of income distribution, the biggest group was in the $50,000 to 100,000 range (34%), which aligns with the U.S. median income of around $69,000. Most respondents were either employed full-time (59%) or retired (12%).\nPrevious payments\nThe survey found that previous stimulus payments, handed out in recent months in a bid to jumpstart the U.S. economy in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, “were widely reported as being used for investing in stocks.”\nA vast majority (72%) of the respondents reported getting a stimulus payment and more than half (53%) said they invested some of the stimulus money in the stock market. Younger people were much more likely to have invested in stocks using the payments, the research said.\nWhile the analysts noted that these checks were still a small proportion of the overall funds invested in the market, they predicted a change with the next batch of payments. “Going forward however, survey respondents plan to put a large chunk (37%) of any forthcoming stimulus checks directly into equities, which could represent a sizable inflow,” the bank said.\n‘Aggressive cohort’\nNew retail investors are seen as a key driver of a rally in U.S. stock markets over the past year, described by strategists as the 2020 “retail wave.” The survey found that more than half of all respondents raised their investments in stocks over the past year, with just under half (45%) investing for the very first time.\n“Behind the recent surge in retail investing is a younger, often new-to-investing, and aggressive cohort not afraid to employ leverage,” Reid and Bhattacharyya noted.\n“Given stimulus checks are currently penciled in at circa $405 billion in Biden’s plan (before Senate revisions), that gives us a maximum of around $150 billion that could go into U.S. equities based on our survey,” although they noted that only a proportion of stimulus check recipients have trading accounts.\n“If we estimate this at around 20% (based on some historical assumptions), that would still provide around circa $30 billion of firepower — and that’s before we talk about any possible boosts to 401k plans outside of trading accounts.”\nInternational markets will be keeping a keen eye on the progress of the Covid relief bill in the coming days. The arrival of a new generation of gaming consoles from <b>Microsoft</b> (NASDAQ:MSFT) and <b>Sony</b> (NYSE:SNE) is also turning out to be a major tailwind for the company -- <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> that could help the chipmaker exceed its own expectations as it supplies chips for both devices.</p>\n<p><b><b>The new gaming consoles are witnessing unprecedented demand</b></b></p>\n<p>The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X consoles have been setting&nbsp;the sales charts on fire in recent months. The PS5, for instance, sold 4.5 million units in less than 50 days since its launch on Nov. 12, according to Sony's fiscal 2020 third-quarter report.</p>\n<p>The company expects its PS5 console to break the record of its predecessor and to exceed sales of 7.6 million units by the end of March. That would be slightly higher than the 7.5 million PS4 units Sony sold from Nov. 2013 through Mar. 2014. According to another estimate, Sony might ship as many as eight million new consoles by the end of this month, though that would depend on the company's ability to procure more components amid&nbsp;a global shortage of chips.</p>\n<p>The long-term picture also seems bright. The PS5 is expected to clock consistently strong sales in the coming years and may eventually top 200 million units shipped per third-party forecasts. The PlayStation 2 has been Sony's best-selling console to date with lifetime shipments of approximately 159 million units, while the PS4 has reportedly shipped around 115 million units. The PS5 has a real shot at dethroning its predecessor in the long run as there are millions of console users in an upgrade window.</p>\n<p>Microsoft's Xbox Series X, on the other hand, is also witnessing strong early demand. Niko Partners estimates that Microsoft moved 3.5 million units of its new console in November and December of last year. The firm points out that the figure would have been higher had Microsoft not underestimated demand and produced more consoles. AMD management credited a ramp-up in the sales of semi-custom chips for this tremendous performance on the Jan. 26 earnings conference call:</p>\n<blockquote>\n Semi-custom sales increase year over year and sequentially based on strong demand for the next generation Sony and Microsoft consoles. Our semi-custom SoC sales are ramping faster than the last console cycle, and we expect sales to be better than typical seasonality in the first half of this year based on the current strong demand.\n</blockquote>\n<p>This indicates that the EESC business can continue to clock high growth rates in 2021, and that's great news for AMD as this segment produced 40% of total revenue last quarter.
