AFP/GETTY IMAGES

Microsoft Corp.’s profit declined more than 12% in the holiday season, and executives said Tuesday that a revenue deceleration in December is expected to continue into the new year as the company lays off workers.

Microsoft reported fiscal second-quarter earnings of $16.43 billion, or $2.20 a share, a decline from $2.48 a share a year ago. The company also reported that severance, impairment and lease-consolidation costs cost it 12 cents a share, which would lead to adjusted earnings of $2.32 a share; Microsoft executives did not provide adjusted earnings a year ago, and typically stick to GAAP profit readings.

Revenue increased to $52.75 billion from $51.7 billion in the holiday quarter of 2022. Analysts on average expected earnings of $2.29 a share on sales of $52.99 billion, according to FactSet.

For the current quarter, Microsoft executives expect revenue of $50.5 billion to $51.5 billion, according to guidance provided by Chief Financial Officer Amy Hood in a conference call Tuesday afternoon. Analysts on average were expecting fiscal third-quarter revenue of $52.42 billion, according to FactSet.

Hood said that Microsoft observed a slowdown in customer spending in December, and expects that to continue. Azure grew by 38% in constant currency, topping expectations, but Hood said that they exited December in the “mid-30s” after the deceleration, and executives expect that percentage to fall four or five points in the current quarter. Analysts were projecting Azure growth of 27.8% for the quarter, or 33.7% in constant currency, according to FactSet.

Microsoft shares gained more than 4% in after-hours trading immediately following the release of the results, but they began to drop after the forecast and December deceleration news were shared. The stock was down 1% as of 8:00 p.m. Eastern.

Microsoft’s forecast takes on extra importance this quarter, as analysts believe that businesses slowed down deals at the end of 2022 to cut costs and for other reasons, and Wall Street will want to know if Microsoft expects any deals that didn’t close before the end of the year will be included in the current quarter’s results. Microsoft executives told investors at the end of the last fiscal year that they expect double-digit percentage growth in revenue and operating margins, but a lot has happened since then.

Microsoft announced thousands of layoffs last week, part of a wave of job cuts from Big Tech companies that increased their workforces at a rapid pace in the early years of the COVID-19 pandemic. Wall Street analysts believed the move signaled concerns about revenue growth.

“We expect that the head-count reduction announcement … will likely be accompanied by a lower revenue outlook for the second half of the FY, but the actions taken by the company are an illustration of how Microsoft can dynamically adjust its cost base to preserve EPS and free cash flow given the macro choppiness,” Evercore ISI analysts wrote in a preview of the earnings, while maintaining an outperform rating and $280 target price on the stock.

Microsoft executives hope to provide a rosier outlook with other deals. The day before its earnings report, the company officially announced a long-expected third investment in ChatGPT creator OpenAI, which includes plans to incorporate the technology into services such as Microsoft’s Azure cloud-computing offering and Bing search engine. But after a 64% decline over the last twelve months, the company finally looks cheap relative to its earnings and long-term potential. Let's discuss three reasons why the beaten-down automaker could be an excellent buy for long-term investors in 2023.

1. Elon Musk-related headwinds look overblown

Like many companies, Tesla faces significant near-term challenges like inflation and rising rates, which increase the cost of capital and hurt growth stock valuations. Investors may also be concerned about the activities of the company's CEO, Elon Musk, who purchased social media company Twitter for $44 billion in October.

In 2022, the billionaire sold a whopping $23 billion worth of Tesla stock to help fund the acquisition. But while stock sales can hurt a company's price in the near term, this shouldn't mean much for fundamental-focused investors. Unlike equity dilution, where new shares are created, the sale of already-existing shares doesn't impact Tesla's value relative to its earnings or cash flow. While some believe the Twitter acquisition is a distraction for Musk, this fear also looks overblown.

Tesla has come a long way from the spiraling losses that almost forced it to the brink of bankruptcy in 2008. Now that the company is well-capitalized and sustainably profitable, one man's managerial skill and tenacity are arguably less important to its continued success.

2. Epic profitability

Tesla is becoming a profit machine, standing head-and-shoulders above its peers in the automotive industry. In the third quarter, total revenue jumped 56% to $21.45 billion while net income doubled to $3.29 billion. Tesla's largest rival, Toyota (which still mainly produces gasoline-powered cars), only generated $3.15 billion in the corresponding period despite selling seven times more vehicles, according to Nikkei Asia.

Nikkei Asia believes that Tesla's edge comes from its strong brand, which allows it to charge a premium for its vehicles. The company's narrow focus on EVs also gives it a streamlined production process compared to traditional automakers, which produce a wide variety of electric, hybrid, and gasoline-powered vehicles.

Some industry watchers believe Tesla's business is slowing after a series of price reductions in China, a move the company's vice president for external relations in China credits to "innumerable engineering innovations." Investors should remember that the price cuts come amid a broader (and likely temporary) auto industry downturn amid high inflation, high-interest rates, and consumer confidence.

Tesla's management remains optimistic for the long term, expecting vehicle delivery growth averaging 50% annually over a multi-year horizon.

3. A relatively cheap valuation

After many years when the stock was arguably overvalued, it's understandable that many investors still look at Tesla with a little side eye. In early January, well-known value investor Bill Miller announced his short position on the company, telling CNBC that he doesn't "think it's worth more than the top five automakers in the world combined." But while Tesla's market cap of $360 billion is high, that only tells one side of the story.

As a pure-play electric automaker, Tesla should be valued differently than traditional automakers that are transitioning to the technology. That's because Tesla enjoys "pure" growth in the EV industry, while its rivals are cannibalizing their existing products with electric alternatives, a strategy that could cost them total market share over the long term. And as mentioned earlier, Tesla enjoys above-average profits.

With a forward price-to-earnings multiple of just 23, Tesla is no longer an expensive stock by any stretch of the imagination when considering its growth rate. That number is significantly lower than the NASDAQ average of 25, and falls behind mature value stocks like McDonald's and Coca-Cola, which both boast forward multiples of 26 and 25, respectively. It's hard to see the shares staying this cheap for very long.

","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; But after a 64% decline over the last twelve months, the company finally looks cheap relative to its earnings and long-term potential. Let's discuss three reasons why the beaten-down automaker could be an excellent buy for long-term investors in 2023.1. Elon Musk-related headwinds look overblownLike many companies, Tesla faces significant near-term challenges like inflation and rising rates, which increase the cost of capital and hurt growth stock valuations. While some believe the Twitter acquisition is a distraction for Musk, this fear also looks overblown.Tesla has come a long way from the spiraling losses that almost forced it to the brink of bankruptcy in 2008. Now that the company is well-capitalized and sustainably profitable, one man's managerial skill and tenacity are arguably less important to its continued success.2. Epic profitabilityTesla is becoming a profit machine, standing head-and-shoulders above its peers in the automotive industry. In the third quarter, total revenue jumped 56% to $21.45 billion while net income doubled to $3.29 billion. Tesla's largest rival, Toyota (which still mainly produces gasoline-powered cars), only generated $3.15 billion in the corresponding period despite selling seven times more vehicles, according to Nikkei Asia.Nikkei Asia believes that Tesla's edge comes from its strong brand, which allows it to charge a premium for its vehicles. The company's narrow focus on EVs also gives it a streamlined production process compared to traditional automakers, which produce a wide variety of electric, hybrid, and gasoline-powered vehicles.Image source: Getty Images. Some industry watchers believe Tesla's business is slowing after a series of price reductions in China, a move the company's vice president for external relations in China credits to \"innumerable engineering innovations.\" Investors should remember that the price cuts come amid a broader (and likely temporary) auto industry downturn amid high inflation, high-interest rates, and consumer confidence.Tesla's management remains optimistic for the long term, expecting vehicle delivery growth averaging 50% annually over a multi-year horizon.3. A relatively cheap valuationAfter many years when the stock was arguably overvalued, it's understandable that many investors still look at Tesla with a little side eye. In early January, well-known value investor Bill Miller announced his short position on the company, telling CNBC that he doesn't \"think it's worth more than the top five automakers in the world combined.\" But while Tesla's market cap of $360 billion is high, that only tells one side of the story. As a pure-play electric automaker, Tesla should be valued differently than traditional automakers that are transitioning to the technology. That's because Tesla enjoys \"pure\" growth in the EV industry, while its rivals are cannibalizing their existing products with electric alternatives, a strategy that could cost them total market share over the long term. It's hard to see the shares staying this cheap for very long.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":298,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9956281557,"gmtCreate":1674013951780,"gmtModify":1676538916305,"author":{"id":"3576159031156193","authorId":"3576159031156193","name":"4ZOEYS","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/485a6405c364ce85c22e81b2913d390f","crmLevel":8,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3576159031156193","authorIdStr":"3576159031156193"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Ok","listText":"Ok","text":"Ok","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9956281557","repostId":"2304238695","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2304238695","kind":"highlight","pubTimestamp":1674013312,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2304238695?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2023-01-18 11:41","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Adam Aron Says Avatar Is a BULL Signal for AMC Stock","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2304238695","media":"InvestorPlace","summary":"AMC Entertainment (AMC) CEO Adam Aron expects Avatar: The Way of Water sales to reach $600 million d","content":"

AMC Entertainment (AMC) CEO Adam Aron expects Avatar: The Way of Water sales to reach $600 million domestically this week.

The movie has grossed $1.903 billion as of this writing

AMC stock is up more than 30% year-to-date (YTD).

Source: rblfmr / Shutterstock.com

AMC Entertainment (NYSE:AMC) stock is in the green today following an encouraging tweet from CEO Adam Aron:

Avatar: The Way of Water keeps on rolling. Let's check out her shopping list.","content":"

Cathie Wood is finding it hard to catch 2020 in a bottle again. The growth investor who became a market icon as the co-founder and CEO of the popular Ark Invest exchange-traded funds (ETFs) has been losing more than winning these days. Her investing style seemed to be marching back into fancy earlier this summer, but her most popular ETF has surrendered 22% of its value just over the last three weeks.

She's not one to shy away from fire sales, so it's not a surprise to see her adding to her positions in DraftKings, Zoom Video, and Twilio on Tuesday. Let's see why she's building up her stakes in these three names.

DraftKings

The NFL season kicks off -- literally and figuratively -- this week, so let's talk about DraftKings. The online gambling and fantasy sports specialist is driving down the field these days, even if it may not seem that way with a stock that is a whopping 79% below last year's all-time high.

Last month's quarterly report was a touchdown. Revenue surged a better-than-expected 57%, and the good news didn't stop there. DraftKings boosted its full-year revenue and adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) guidance. There are now 1.5 million average monthly unique paying customers, a 30% increase over the past year. Average revenue per paying user is up also up 30% over the past year.

There's a lot of red tape to untangle in securing gaming rights in new markets, but DraftKings continues to grow its reach. It opened its online sportsbook in Kansas last week. Recent analyst notes find Wall Street pros jacking their price targets higher, encouraged by DraftKings' unique position in the market.

Zoom Video

Momentum is picking up for DraftKings, but the same can't be said about Zoom Video. The videoconferencing leader has surrendered 18% of its value since posting disappointing financial results two weeks ago. It's not just Wood who may have peaked two years ago. Zoom shares are a blistering 86% below their late 2020 peak.

The deceleration in top-line growth at Zoom has been brutal, falling sharply in each of its last six quarters.

Q4 2021: 369%

Q1 2022: 191%

Q2 2022: 54%

Q3 2022: 35%

Q4 2022: 21%

Q1 2023: 12%

Q2 2023: 8%

Guidance calls for the slowdown to continue with a 5% increase in revenue for the current fiscal quarter. Despite a positive net dollar expansion rate north of 120% for its enterprise customers, a lot of casual users have moved on now that jobs, schooling, and reunions have returned to in-person affairs.

Twilio

Back to the world of healthy double-digit revenue growth, Twilio came through with a 41% year-over-year increase in its latest report. Revenue and earnings exceeded expectations, but disappointing near-term guidance is why the stock is a market laggard. Let's see why she's building up her stakes in these three names.DraftKingsThe NFL season kicks off -- literally and figuratively -- this week, so let's talk about DraftKings. The online gambling and fantasy sports specialist is driving down the field these days, even if it may not seem that way with a stock that is a whopping 79% below last year's all-time high.Last month's quarterly report was a touchdown. Recent analyst notes find Wall Street pros jacking their price targets higher, encouraged by DraftKings' unique position in the market.Zoom VideoMomentum is picking up for DraftKings, but the same can't be said about Zoom Video. The videoconferencing leader has surrendered 18% of its value since posting disappointing financial results two weeks ago. It's not just Wood who may have peaked two years ago. Zoom shares are a blistering 86% below their late 2020 peak. The deceleration in top-line growth at Zoom has been brutal, falling sharply in each of its last six quarters.Q4 2021: 369%Q1 2022: 191%Q2 2022: 54%Q3 2022: 35%Q4 2022: 21%Q1 2023: 12%Q2 2023: 8%Guidance calls for the slowdown to continue with a 5% increase in revenue for the current fiscal quarter. Despite a positive net dollar expansion rate north of 120% for its enterprise customers, a lot of casual users have moved on now that jobs, schooling, and reunions have returned to in-person affairs.TwilioBack to the world of healthy double-digit revenue growth, Twilio came through with a 41% year-over-year increase in its latest report. Revenue and earnings exceeded expectations, but disappointing near-term guidance is why the stock is a market laggard. Like Zoom, shares of Twilio are down 86% from their all-time highs. The provider of in-app communication solutions is finding that some of its customers in hard-hit industries aren't delivering the kind of volume that Twilio typically sees. Crypto exchanges, social networking sites, and consumer on-demand businesses have been struggling in recent months, and Twilio sees revenue slowing to a 31% gain for the current quarter.DraftKings, Zoom, and Twilio are all trading well below their highs, but they're all still compelling growth stocks at attractive price points.
