This could change drastically in today&#39;s topsy turvy market, of course.</p><p><b>What is the outlook for Alphabet?</b></p><p>Alphabet had a tremendous 2021 by nearly any measure. As shown below, sales and cash from operations rose 41% to $257.6 billion and $91.7 billion, respectively. First, Google Search currently holds a market share of over 85%,according to Statista. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) believes it is a monopoly, but unless Congress passes comprehensive legislation, Alphabet will continue to dominate. This gives the company tremendous pricing power, which is critical to maintaining profitability.</p><p>Alphabet also has two other fast-growing revenue streams in YouTube and the Google Cloud. YouTube revenues spiked 46% in 2021 partly due to people staying in more due to COVID-19. The growth slowed to 14% year over year in Q1 2022 as the pandemic waned, but the upward trend remains.</p><p>Google Cloud may be the most important segment to watch moving forward. This segment competes with <b>Amazon</b>&#39;s Amazon Web Services (AWS) and <b>Microsoft</b>&#39;s Azure. Cloud computing is expected to continue its explosive growth in the foreseeable future. Sales for Google Cloud grew 47% in 2021 to $19.2 billion. The rub is that this segment isn&#39;t profitable, while AWS produces enormous operating profits for Amazon. As shown below, sentiment is not only lower than in March 2020, but it is far lower than even during the Great Recession. For instance, it invested in embattled gold and silver miner <b>Hycroft Mining</b> (NASDAQ:<b><u>HYMC</u></b>), which is also a Reddit favorite. And today’s blastoff followed a <i>Reuters</i> interview in which Chief Executive Adam Aron said investors should expect more “transformational” deals in the company’s future.</p><p>Meanwhile, a slate of superhero blockbusters has saved the day for AMC. However, barring a few tentpole releases, there is not much to see regarding box office numbers, and the company’s core business interests remain under pressure.</p><p><b>Reddit Gives Thumbs Up to Hycroft Mining Purchase</b></p><p>Reddit seems to approve of AMC’s foray into the precious metals market. For many analysts, though, the investment in struggling Hycroft Mining is a headscratcher. Management seems to believe they have become experts at navigating troubled waters and coming out on the other side leaner and stronger. However, their credentials are dubious.</p><p>Yes, the company is in a much better position than it was just a couple of years ago. However, this has little to do with fundamental strength. Instead, you can thank AMC’s fans on Reddit for helping it stave off bankruptcy. The same fans believe that AMC’s investment in a mining company makes sound financial sense since gold is a tried-and-tested store of value.</p><p>Interestingly, after the great escape, the company has launched several initiatives, the most fascinating of which have to be allowing cryptocurrency purchases and offering NFTs. However, its core business continues to struggle. As entertainment companies engage in streaming wars and fight for attention, there will be little to motivate the casual viewer to check out the latest releases in theaters outside perhaps the odd summer blockbuster.</p><p>Selling branded popcorn could become a great revenue stream. However, it cannot take the place of the movie theater business for AMC.</p><p><b>AMC Needs to Revamp Its Business</b></p><p>The story of <b>Nokia</b> (NYSE:<b><u>NOK</u></b>) is a cautionary tale told in business classes worldwide. The company was the biggest cell phone manufacturer globally before being overtaken by <b>Apple</b> (NASDAQ:<b><u>AAPL</u></b>). Nokia’s downfall came from its inability to keep up with competitors like Apple, which were making better products. Nokia also made the mistake of only focusing on one type of phone instead of differentiating its product lineup.</p><p>However, there should be another chapter in the works because Nokia is now a growing 5G enterprise with healthy financials.</p><p>AMC will need to similarly change its operations by offering a more immersive experience. This will require a lot of experimentation, but eventually could be successful.</p><p>Blockbuster releases like<i>Spider-Man: No Way Home</i>are becoming rare in the post-pandemic era, and AMC needs to account for this.</p><p>Launching a digital coin and investing in virtual reality could be catalysts for future growth. Imagine watching a great art movie with friends in an amazing AMC theater from the comfort of your home in the metaverse. AMC might struggle to get people into a movie theatre for a movie like <i>The Last Duel</i>, but in a VR setting, perhaps consumers will be willing to give it a try.</p><p><b>AMC Stock Is Still Too Volatile</b></p><p>Today’s action in AMC stock likely had more than a little to do with short-sellers covering, as the percentage of shares held short is around 20% of the float. Traders certainly can’t rule out another short squeeze in the stock’s future, but they also can’t rule out a sharp sell-off.</p><p>Reddit adds another dimension of volatility to stocks like AMC. Because retail investors own a majority of the shares, sentiment on Reddit will continue to be more important than sentiment on Wall Street. Based on recent prices, Alphabet will trade in the range of $115 per share and Tesla around $240 per share post-split. This could change drastically in today&#39;s topsy turvy market, of course.</p><p><b>What is the outlook for Alphabet?</b></p><p>Alphabet had a tremendous 2021 by nearly any measure. As shown below, sales and cash from operations rose 41% to $257.6 billion and $91.7 billion, respectively. And the company&#39;s diluted earnings per share (EPS) reached $112.20 on over 90% growth.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f6aa04d417c4ecae043384597580febe\" tg-width=\"2000\" tg-height=\"453\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>DATA SOURCE: ALPHABET. But what about the future? With a potential recession around the corner, investors are rightly concerned that ad budgets will be cut, which could hurt Alphabet&#39;s results.</p><p>Alphabet has a few aces up its sleeve to weather an economic slowdown. First, Google Search currently holds a market share of over 85%,according to Statista. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) believes it is a monopoly, but unless Congress passes comprehensive legislation, Alphabet will continue to dominate. This gives the company tremendous pricing power, which is critical to maintaining profitability.</p><p>Alphabet also has two other fast-growing revenue streams in YouTube and the Google Cloud. YouTube revenues spiked 46% in 2021 partly due to people staying in more due to COVID-19. The growth slowed to 14% year over year in Q1 2022 as the pandemic waned, but the upward trend remains.</p><p>Google Cloud may be the most important segment to watch moving forward. This segment competes with <b>Amazon</b>&#39;s Amazon Web Services (AWS) and <b>Microsoft</b>&#39;s Azure. Cloud computing is expected to continue its explosive growth in the foreseeable future. Sales for Google Cloud grew 47% in 2021 to $19.2 billion. The rub is that this segment isn&#39;t profitable, while AWS produces enormous operating profits for Amazon. If Alphabet can scale to profitability, it will be a giant boon for profits and shareholders.</p><p>On the valuation front, Alphabet trades for its lowest price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio since the beginning of 2019, as shown below.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/832b194f1b0667c75fe5e1101259d5fc\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"433\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>GOOG PE RATIO DATA BY YCHARTS.</span></p><p>Even if the company experiences short-term headwinds, this price looks enticing for long-term investors.</p><p><b>What is the outlook for Tesla?</b></p><p>Let&#39;s face it, whatever we think of Tesla&#39;s valuation (it&#39;s high!) or outspoken CEO Elon Musk (he&#39;s polarizing!), the company&#39;s rise has been absolutely phenomenal. And shareholders have been richly rewarded. An investment of $10,000 in Tesla stock 10 years ago would be worth over $1 million today, while the same investment five years ago would be worth more than $95,000.</p><p>There are positive and negative factors on the horizon for Tesla. Gas prices are shocking Americans at the pump. This could lead many to consider an electric vehicle maybe for the first time. Tesla is experiencing massive demand already, with many cars sold out until 2023.</p><p>The big question is whether this demand can continue in a potential recession.</p><p>Consumer sentiment is generally a leading indicator of upcoming consumer spending. As shown below, sentiment is not only lower than in March 2020, but it is far lower than even during the Great Recession. This is disturbing for any company that relies upon consumer spending.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/41bff0dde3b248b2b94f3636bc6eb00b\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"433\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>US INDEX OF CONSUMER SENTIMENT DATA BY YCHARTS.</span></p><p>Competition is heating up. For years, Tesla has enjoyed an incredible first-mover advantage. Tesla was laser-focused on electric vehicles while other automakers scuffled along. That&#39;s changing quickly as traditional automakers invest billions in electrifying large parts of their fleets in the coming years.</p><p>The final concern is the valuation. Tesla has a larger market cap than the following seven largest automakers combined. Tesla crushes most of these on growth and profitability, and investors have been willing to pay a premium on the stock for years. Still, caution is warranted with an economic storm on the horizon. Companies with high valuations may fare worse than others.</p><p><b>Which has the stronger bull case?</b></p><p>Alphabet has a few advantages over Tesla in an inflationary environment and with an economic slowdown likely. Alphabet relies on business spending while Tesla relies on consumers. Business spending may prove more durable because advertisers must continue to invest to grab limited consumer dollars. Due to inflation, Tesla also has to contend with rising costs for raw materials. One of Tesla&#39;s draws is its profitability, and its margins could be crimped. A manufacturing company will be more affected by this than a tech company.</p><p>This all adds up to Alphabet stock being the better bet currently. That said, Tesla likely has a higher long-term ceiling but much more risk. With this in mind, which of these juggernauts is the better long-term play?Alphabet, the parent company of Google, and Tesla are on the clock, with Alphabet's 20-for-1 split coming up on July 1 and Tesla's date still to be determined. Tesla will hold its shareholder meeting on August 4th when it is expected a 3-for-1 split will be approved. The execution of the split will likely follow shortly after. Based on recent prices, Alphabet will trade in the range of $115 per share and Tesla around $240 per share post-split. This could change drastically in today's topsy turvy market, of course.What is the outlook for Alphabet?Alphabet had a tremendous 2021 by nearly any measure. As shown below, sales and cash from operations rose 41% to $257.6 billion and $91.7 billion, respectively. With a potential recession around the corner, investors are rightly concerned that ad budgets will be cut, which could hurt Alphabet's results.Alphabet has a few aces up its sleeve to weather an economic slowdown. First, Google Search currently holds a market share of over 85%,according to Statista. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) believes it is a monopoly, but unless Congress passes comprehensive legislation, Alphabet will continue to dominate. This gives the company tremendous pricing power, which is critical to maintaining profitability.Alphabet also has two other fast-growing revenue streams in YouTube and the Google Cloud. YouTube revenues spiked 46% in 2021 partly due to people staying in more due to COVID-19. The growth slowed to 14% year over year in Q1 2022 as the pandemic waned, but the upward trend remains.Google Cloud may be the most important segment to watch moving forward. This segment competes with Amazon's Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft's Azure. Cloud computing is expected to continue its explosive growth in the foreseeable future. Sales for Google Cloud grew 47% in 2021 to $19.2 billion. The rub is that this segment isn't profitable, while AWS produces enormous operating profits for Amazon. If Alphabet can scale to profitability, it will be a giant boon for profits and shareholders.On the valuation front, Alphabet trades for its lowest price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio since the beginning of 2019, as shown below.GOOG PE RATIO DATA BY YCHARTS.Even if the company experiences short-term headwinds, this price looks enticing for long-term investors.What is the outlook for Tesla?Let's face it, whatever we think of Tesla's valuation (it's high!) or outspoken CEO Elon Musk (he's polarizing!), the company's rise has been absolutely phenomenal. And shareholders have been richly rewarded. An investment of $10,000 in Tesla stock 10 years ago would be worth over $1 million today, while the same investment five years ago would be worth more than $95,000.There are positive and negative factors on the horizon for Tesla. Gas prices are shocking Americans at the pump. This could lead many to consider an electric vehicle maybe for the first time. Tesla is experiencing massive demand already, with many cars sold out until 2023.The big question is whether this demand can continue in a potential recession.Consumer sentiment is generally a leading indicator of upcoming consumer spending. As shown below, sentiment is not only lower than in March 2020, but it is far lower than even during the Great Recession. For years, Tesla has enjoyed an incredible first-mover advantage. Tesla was laser-focused on electric vehicles while other automakers scuffled along. Tesla has a larger market cap than the following seven largest automakers combined. Tesla crushes most of these on growth and profitability, and investors have been willing to pay a premium on the stock for years. Still, caution is warranted with an economic storm on the horizon. Companies with high valuations may fare worse than others.Which has the stronger bull case?Alphabet has a few advantages over Tesla in an inflationary environment and with an economic slowdown likely. Alphabet relies on business spending while Tesla relies on consumers. Business spending may prove more durable because advertisers must continue to invest to grab limited consumer dollars. Due to inflation, Tesla also has to contend with rising costs for raw materials. One of Tesla's draws is its profitability, and its margins could be crimped. A manufacturing company will be more affected by this than a tech company.This all adds up to Alphabet stock being the better bet currently. The movie theater chain has been reporting a continued recovery for its business fundamentals after being heavily impacted by the COVID pandemic.</p><p>To get a better sense of where things stand at the moment for AMC, revenues reached 65% of pre-pandemic levels in Q1, the best first quarter in the last two years. Compared to last year, revenue grew five times, while adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) grew by 80%.</p><p>But moviegoer attendance has not returned to pre-pandemic levels yet. In Q1, total attendance was 39 million, which was four times higher than in the same period in 2021. But it was lower than the previous quarter, when it was seven times higher year over year.</p><p>AMC explained this was due to a lack of big movie releases during the period.</p><p>However, for Q2, the story should be quite different. Attendance numbers should come in well above last quarter&#39;s, due to big box-office hits.<i>Top Gun: Maverick</i>, the biggest highlight, passed $600 million in domestic box-office receipts in Q2.
