Combined, they have brought in $705 billion in revenue over the past 12 months, but that number pales in comparison to the growth trajectories both companies are on.

Is there an advantage that either stock has that investors should pinpoint? Or are they both evenly matched? Let's find out.

A common offering is the future for both

These two businesses hardly needs an introduction. Amazon's e-commerce platform has become the go-to place for nearly all shopping needs. Microsoft's Office products are standard for most computers, and it has a consumer product segment offering laptops and gaming consoles.

However, the most important segment for both companies' future may well be cloud computing. Microsoft's Azure and Amazon Web Services (AWS) are the industry leaders, each maintaining an impressive market share.

Company

Rank

Market Share

Amazon

1st

34%

Microsoft

2nd

21%

Alphabet (Google Cloud)

3rd

11%

Data source: Synergy Research Group.

That's a commanding lead over third-place Google Cloud. Additionally, each saw impressive revenue growth, with AWS rising 27% and Microsoft rising 35% year over year in their latest quarters. That growth is expected to continue for some time. Precedence Research expects the industry to grow at a compound annual rate of 17.4% from 2022 to 2030, eventually reaching a $1.6 trillion market.

Say Amazon and Microsoft can retain their current market share in cloud computing. This would put potential 2030 revenue for this segment at $544 billion for Amazon and $336 billion for Microsoft. That's impressive considering that Amazon's trailing-12-month revenue was $502 billion and Microsoft's was $203 billion. It's an opportunity for massive growth apart from their other businesses.

Looking at it another way, that $336 billion would be more than double Microsoft's non-Azure revenue today, by my estimate. By comparison, the projected $554 billion for Amazon's AWS business would be just a little over 30% more than its non-AWS revenue today. So cloud computing could have a much bigger impact down the road for Microsoft's revenue.

However, on the bottom line, cloud computing could be more meaningful for Amazon, because AWS has a higher margin than the e-commerce revenue. In fact, it's Amazon's only profitable segment right now.

At Amazon, AWS is also funding other business segments. At Microsoft, Azure is complementary. This skews the future outlook in Microsoft's favor.

Amazon is the better value

However, stock valuation also has a role to play. Amazon isn't profitable, while Microsoft is, so comparing earnings or free cash flow isn't going to yield a helpful comparison. Plus, Amazon's commerce business is inherently low margin, even when profitable. So a direct comparison isn't possible. However, we can value each company in its own way.

MSFT PS Ratio data by YCharts

Microsoft's price-to-earnings ratio of 27.5 is rich although not quite as expensive as it's been over the past couple of years. This shows that it is potentially undervalued.

Over the long run, premium valuations can be overcome by solid execution and growth -- something Microsoft has demonstrated. There's a lot of uncertainty with Amazon's commerce business, and so that gives Microsoft the edge.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":511,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9969800325,"gmtCreate":1668391787367,"gmtModify":1676538049147,"author":{"id":"3576631507527148","authorId":"3576631507527148","name":"Cheria","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3576631507527148","authorIdStr":"3576631507527148"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Mapletree PanAsia Com Tr(N2IU.SI)$ Time to perform to hit rights issue price","listText":"$Mapletree PanAsia Com Tr(N2IU.SI)$ Time to perform to hit rights issue price","text":"$Mapletree PanAsia Com Tr(N2IU.SI)$ Time to perform to hit rights issue price","images":[{"img":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/5507c00b2006655540adf9dd68963dc0","width":"1125","height":"2033"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":2,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9969800325","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":582,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9986794459,"gmtCreate":1667012356272,"gmtModify":1676537849693,"author":{"id":"3576631507527148","authorId":"3576631507527148","name":"Cheria","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3576631507527148","authorIdStr":"3576631507527148"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$PayPal(PYPL)$<v-v data-views=\"1\"></v-v> It's time to wake up","listText":"$PayPal(PYPL)$<v-v data-views=\"1\"></v-v> It's time to wake up","text":"$PayPal(PYPL)$ It's time to wake up","images":[{"img":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/0bd9b9d4abd6b9ee7e3cf0d7891ec2bb","width":"1125","height":"2327"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9986794459","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":536,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9988646473,"gmtCreate":1666747774893,"gmtModify":1676537799677,"author":{"id":"3576631507527148","authorId":"3576631507527148","name":"Cheria","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3576631507527148","authorIdStr":"3576631507527148"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Microsoft(MSFT)$<v-v data-views=\"0\"></v-v> Post market dropped a lot. updates on corpo","content":"

Welcome to the latest edition of top stock highlights where we bring you the latest updates on corporate news and other interesting business snippets.

Changes to STI constituents

In its regular quarterly review of the Straits Times Index(SGX: ^STI), index leader FTSE Russell, a unit of the London Stock Exchange Group(LON: LSEG), announced one change to the constituents.

ComfortDelGro Corporation Limited(SGX: C52), the land transport giant with a total fleet size of more than 34,000 buses, taxis and rental vehicles, will be dropped from the bellwether index.

In its place, Emperador Inc(SGX: EMI) will be slotted into the index.

The Filipino company is the largest liquor company in its home country and is dual-listed on both the Singapore Stock Exchange and the Philippine Stock Exchange.

Emperador operates an integrated alcohol business, manufacturing, bottling and distributing distilled spirits and other alcoholic beverages from the Philippines and Europe.

Its product portfolio comprises a mix of domestic and foreign brands such as Emperador Light, Andy Player Whisky, Smirnoff Mule, and Fundador, among others.

The STI Reserve list has the five-highest ranking non-constituents by market capitalisation.

They are, in order of size, Olam Group(SGX: VC2), Suntec REIT(SGX: T82U), Keppel REIT(SGX: K71U), Frasers Centrepoint Trust(SGX: J69U), and Ascott Residence Trust(SGX: HMN).

Investors should note that Ascott Residence Trust has replaced Mapletree North Asia Commercial Trust in the reserve list, as the latter had merged with Mapletree Commercial Trust to form Mapletree Pan Asia Commercial Trust(SGX: N2IU).

20th anniversary of S-REITs

Time flies, and in the blink of an eye, it’s been 20 years since the first SingaporeREIT(S-REIT) was listed on our shores.

The REIT Association of Singapore (Reitas) organised an event to celebrate this milestone, and Singapore Exchange’s(SGX: S68) CEO Loh Boon Chye noted that the S-REIT sector continues to be one of the fastest-growing in Asia.

S-REITs form the second-largest REIT market outside of Japan, with a total of 43 REITs with a market value of more than S$111 billion, making up close to 12% of the market capitalisation of all SGX stocks.

The very first REIT, CapitaMall Trust, was listed on the Singapore market back on 17 July 2002.

It was later merged with CapitaCommercial Trust to form CapitaLand Integrated Commercial Trust(SGX: C38U).

The REIT market remains buoyant with two recent listings last year of Daiwa House Logistics Trust(SGX: DHLU) and Digital Core REIT(SGX: DCRU).

There may be more REIT listings coming up, with Mapletree Investments Pte Ltd said to be mulling a potential initial public offering of its student accommodation assets that could raise US$1 billion.

Singapore banks raising deposit rates

The race is heating up for the banks as they rush to raise deposit rates to stay competitive.

DBS Group(SGX: D05) was the first to up the ante, raising the rates on its Multiplier account to a maximum of 3.5% on 1 August, up from 3% previously, for balances of between S$50,000 to S$100,000.

OCBC Ltd(SGX: O39) then followed suit on 30 August, raising the maximum interest rate on its flagship 360 Account.

Customers can earn up to 4.05% on balances up to S$100,000, up from the previous maximum of 2.38% on balances up to S$75,000.

United Overseas Bank Ltd(SGX: U11), or UOB, became the third and final bank to raise the deposit rates on its One Account.

Its maximum rate was raised to 3.6%, up from the promotional rate of 3% introduced at the beginning of August.

Of course, these rates do come with a slew of terms and conditions that include the crediting of your salary to each of these bank accounts or attaining a minimum spend on select credit and/or debit cards.

It’s clear, though, that this jostling for deposits can only benefit the end customer as interest rates continue rising.

Investors should be glad to know that all three banks are set to enjoy higher net interest income in the coming quarters as they reprice their loans in line with higher interest rates.

","source":"lsy1602567310727","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n<meta to the latest edition of top stock highlights where we bring you the latest updates on corporate news and other interesting business snippets.Changes to STI constituentsIn its regular quarterly review of the Straits Times Index(SGX: ^STI), index leader FTSE Russell, a unit of the London Stock Exchange Group(LON: LSEG), announced one change to the constituents.ComfortDelGro Corporation Limited(SGX: C52), the land transport giant with a total fleet size of more than 34,000 buses, taxis and rental vehicles, will be dropped from the bellwether index. In its place, Emperador Inc(SGX: EMI) will be slotted into the index. The Filipino company is the largest liquor company in its home country and is dual-listed on both the Singapore Stock Exchange and the Philippine Stock Exchange.Emperador operates an integrated alcohol business, manufacturing, bottling and distributing distilled spirits and other alcoholic beverages from the Philippines and Europe. Its product portfolio comprises a mix of domestic and foreign brands such as Emperador Light, Andy Player Whisky, Smirnoff Mule, and Fundador, among others. The STI Reserve list has the five-highest ranking non-constituents by market capitalisation. They are, in order of size, Olam Group(SGX: VC2), Suntec REIT(SGX: T82U), Keppel REIT(SGX: K71U), Frasers Centrepoint Trust(SGX: J69U), and Ascott Residence Trust(SGX: HMN).Investors should note that Ascott Residence Trust has replaced Mapletree North Asia Commercial Trust in the reserve list, as the latter had merged with Mapletree Commercial Trust to form Mapletree Pan Asia Commercial Trust(SGX: N2IU).20th anniversary of S-REITsTime flies, and in the blink of an eye, it’s been 20 years since the first SingaporeREIT(S-REIT) was listed on our shores. The REIT Association of Singapore (Reitas) organised an event to celebrate this milestone, and Singapore Exchange’s(SGX: S68) CEO Loh Boon Chye noted that the S-REIT sector continues to be one of the fastest-growing in Asia.S-REITs form the second-largest REIT market outside of Japan, with a total of 43 REITs with a market value of more than S$111 billion, making up close to 12% of the market capitalisation of all SGX stocks. The very first REIT, CapitaMall Trust, was listed on the Singapore market back on 17 July 2002.It was later merged with CapitaCommercial Trust to form CapitaLand Integrated Commercial Trust(SGX: C38U).The REIT market remains buoyant with two recent listings last year of Daiwa House Logistics Trust(SGX: DHLU) and Digital Core REIT(SGX: DCRU).There may be more REIT listings coming up, with Mapletree Investments Pte Ltd said to be mulling a potential initial public offering of its student accommodation assets that could raise US$1 billion.Singapore banks raising deposit ratesThe race is heating up for the banks as they rush to raise deposit rates to stay competitive.DBS Group(SGX: D05) was the first to up the ante, raising the rates on its Multiplier account to a maximum of 3.5% on 1 August, up from 3% previously, for balances of between S$50,000 to S$100,000.OCBC Ltd(SGX: O39) then followed suit on 30 August, raising the maximum interest rate on its flagship 360 Account.Customers can earn up to 4.05% on balances up to S$100,000, up from the previous maximum of 2.38% on balances up to S$75,000.United Overseas Bank Ltd(SGX: U11), or UOB, became the third and final bank to raise the deposit rates on its One Account. Its maximum rate was raised to 3.6%, up from the promotional rate of 3% introduced at the beginning of August.Of course, these rates do come with a slew of terms and conditions that include the crediting of your salary to each of these bank accounts or attaining a minimum spend on select credit and/or debit cards. It’s clear, though, that this jostling for deposits can only benefit the end customer as interest rates continue rising.Investors should be glad to know that all three banks are set to enjoy higher net interest income in the coming quarters as they reprice their loans in line with higher interest rates.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":57,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9939083535,"gmtCreate":1662021722631,"gmtModify":1676536627358,"author":{"id":"3576631507527148","authorId":"3576631507527148","name":"Cheria","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3576631507527148","authorIdStr":"3576631507527148"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"<a But what's next?","content":"
In late May, graphics chip-maker NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA) surprised shareholders with an announcement that it would execute a four-for-one stock split. The stock split is finally almost here. Shares are expected to begin trading on a split-adjusted basis on July 20.
\n
Ahead of the tech company's stock split, here's a close look at the upcoming split and NVIDIA's underlying business. As it turns out, the graphics chip specialist is firing on all cylinders.
\n
The stock is soaring. But why?
\n
Shares of NVIDIA have notably soared recently. The stock is up more than 30% since the tech company announced its stock split in May.
\n
Investors should note that a stock split doesn't actually make an investor's stake in a company more valuable. In addition, it doesn't increase the long-term prospects for the stock. All that happens when a stock splits is that every share a shareholder owns is adjusted relative to the designated share-split ratio. In this case, NVIDIA investors will have four shares for every one share they previously owned. The total value of the four new shares, however, will be the same as what one share was worth at the moment of the split.
\n
While it's possible that NVIDIA's announcement of a stock split helped catalyze a rise in the company's stock price, such behavior isn't rational as there's no increase in the value of an investor's stake. The recent rise in the stock price, therefore, is likely primarily a result of the business's strong underlying momentum.
\n
Surging sales, profits
\n
A look at NVIDIA's impressive fiscal first-quarter results, which were released after the company announced its stock split, helps drive home why investors have been eagerly accumulating shares.
\n
Fiscal first-quarter revenue soared 84% year over year to $5.66 billion. This was fueled by a more than doubling of gaming revenue, which rose to $2.76 billion, and a 79% year-over-year increase in data center revenue ($2.05 billion). Earnings per share soared 106% year over year to $3.03, and non-GAAP (adjusted) earnings per share rose 103% year over year to $3.66. Analysts were expecting significantly lower revenue and non-GAAP earnings per share of $5.41 billion and $3.28, respectively.
\n
What to expect from here
\n
Going forward, investors should be careful to keep their expectations in check. Though the stock's recent momentum certainly suggests there's a strong appetite for NVIDIA shares ahead of its stock split next month, this appreciation means investors have to pay up a higher price (and a higher valuation) to get into this growth story.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
NVIDIA's Stock Split Is Almost Here: Here's What You Should Know
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nNVIDIA's Stock Split Is Almost Here: Here's What You Should Know\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-07-01 10:27 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
In late May, graphics chip-maker NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA) surprised shareholders with an announcement that it would execute a four-for-one stock split. Though the stock's recent momentum certainly suggests there's a strong appetite for NVIDIA shares ahead of its stock split next month, this appreciation means investors have to pay up a higher price (and a higher valuation) to get into this growth story.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":138,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9057384735,"gmtCreate":1655466590727,"gmtModify":1676535645166,"author":{"id":"3576631507527148","authorId":"3576631507527148","name":"Cheria","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3576631507527148","authorIdStr":"3576631507527148"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$MAPLETREE COMMERCIAL TRUST(N2IU.SI)$Anyone understand what is the preferring offering about?","listText":"$MAPLETREE COMMERCIAL TRUST(N2IU.SI)$Anyone understand what is the preferring offering about?","text":"$MAPLETREE COMMERCIAL TRUST(N2IU.SI)$Anyone understand what is the preferring offering about?","images":[{"img":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/ee03aceb25be5ddad3fdfe265c30885c","width":"1242","height":"3057"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":9,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9057384735","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":226,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9969800325,"gmtCreate":1668391787367,"gmtModify":1676538049147,"author":{"id":"3576631507527148","authorId":"3576631507527148","name":"Cheria","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3576631507527148","authorIdStr":"3576631507527148"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Mapletree PanAsia Com Tr(N2IU.SI)$ Time to perform to hit rights issue price","listText":"$Mapletree PanAsia Com Tr(N2IU.SI)$ Time to perform to hit rights issue price","text":"$Mapletree PanAsia Com Tr(N2IU.SI)$ Time to perform to hit rights issue price","images":[{"img":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/5507c00b2006655540adf9dd68963dc0","width":"1125","height":"2033"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":2,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9969800325","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":582,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":832167935,"gmtCreate":1629599278427,"gmtModify":1676530076492,"author":{"id":"3576631507527148","authorId":"3576631507527148","name":"Cheria","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3576631507527148","authorIdStr":"3576631507527148"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Is UOB better than DBS given that its dividend yield is higher than Dbs.","listText":"Is UOB better than DBS given that its dividend yield is higher than Dbs.","text":"Is UOB better than DBS given that its dividend yield is higher than Dbs.","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/caec6f4bbfe98ba1673ef08fbc4a3639","width":"1125","height":"2605"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/832167935","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1124,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9929426104,"gmtCreate":1670722861908,"gmtModify":1676538422831,"author":{"id":"3576631507527148","authorId":"3576631507527148","name":"Cheria","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3576631507527148","authorIdStr":"3576631507527148"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Both are good blue chips stock","listText":"Both are good blue chips stock","text":"Both are good blue chips stock","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9929426104","repostId":"2290238146","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2290238146","kind":"highlight","pubTimestamp":1670638098,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2290238146?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-12-10 10:08","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Better Buy: Microsoft vs. Amazon","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2290238146","media":"Motley Fool","summary":"These two giants have one area where they compete against each other.","content":"

Two of the largest companies globally are Microsoft and Amazon. The company’s been hit withdeteriorating U.S.-China relations, and more recently, delisting threats. The globalchip shortageaffecting all EV stocks is still at play, providing additional downside momentum in recent weeks.

However, today, a couple of additional headwinds materialized. Let’s dive into what’s driving NIO stock lower today.

BYD, Competitors Threatening NIO Stock

On Tuesday, Warren Buffett-backed Chinese Automaker BYD Company(OTCMKTS:BYDDF)announcedit had delivered more than twice as many electric cars as Nio in March.

The race to capture market share in the fast-growing Chinese market is on. Shares are down more than 5% at the time of writing as investors continue to digest the Chinese EV maker’s prospects. Many investors are already aware of the myriad of issues plaguing this stock of late. The company’s been hit withdeteriorating U.S.-China relations, and more recently, delisting threats. The globalchip shortageaffecting all EV stocks is still at play, providing additional downside momentum in recent weeks. However, today, a couple of additional headwinds materialized. Let’s dive into what’s driving NIO stock lower today.BYD, Competitors Threatening NIO StockOn Tuesday, Warren Buffett-backed Chinese Automaker BYD Company(OTCMKTS:BYDDF)announcedit had delivered more than twice as many electric cars as Nio in March. The race to capture market share in the fast-growing Chinese market is on. And right now, it appears Nio is losing ground to competitors.Nio’s March deliveries of 7,257 cars didbeat analyst expectations. However, Nio isn’t the only game in town, and investors seem to be assessing how the market share of each competitor will ultimately shape up.BYD and Xpeng(NYSE:XPEV) combined to produce roughly three times as many cars as Nio. An approximate 25% market share compared to its top two competitors isn’t bad, but it isn’t great either. Accordingly, it appears the jury’s still out on which company will be the longer-term market leader in China.Q2 Production Headwinds an IssueRecentcommentsby Nio’s founder and CEO William Li have provided another cause for concern for investors in NIO stock. This time, the issue is once again with a global chip shortage. Li said:“We still face difficulties in achieving our production goal — the issue (of chip shortage) remains tough in the second quarter, but it will affect our production only in the near term.”Concerns are that the global chip shortage could result in Nio missing its production targets. Given how much growth is priced into EV stocks, that’s not a good thing. The company’s target of assembling 7,500 cars in Q2 appears to be at risk, and investors are pricing this risk into NIO stock today.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":143,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":327751039,"gmtCreate":1616128829521,"gmtModify":1704791318835,"author":{"id":"3576631507527148","authorId":"3576631507527148","name":"Cheria","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3576631507527148","authorIdStr":"3576631507527148"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Time to buy in when it dips.","listText":"Time to buy in when it dips.","text":"Time to buy in when it dips.","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/327751039","repostId":"1196835107","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1196835107","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1616119179,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1196835107?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-03-19 09:59","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Why Tesla Stock Fell Sharply on Thursday","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1196835107","media":" Motley Fool","summary":"Growth stocks like Tesla are still having trouble rebounding.\nWhat happened\nShares of electric vehic","content":"
Growth stocks like Tesla are still having trouble rebounding.
\n
What happened
\n
Shares of electric vehicle maker Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) fell on Thursday, declining as much as 7%.
\n
The stock's decline is likely primarily due to a bearish day in the market for growth stocks.
\n
So what
\n
Many tech stocks slid sharply on Thursday. However, thanks to its share price spurt, you may be forgiven for thinking NVDA does not pay any dividend, as the dividend yield has shrunk to a mere 0.08 percent. This is way lower than its long-term average of 0.75 percent.
\n
To put it simply, after footing around $800 to buy one share of NVDA before the ex-dividend date on 9 June 2021, you as a shareholder will be receiving $0.16 on 1 July 2021. Pretty much chump change for small investors.
\n
One would need to own 50 shares worth around $40,000 to collect enough dividend to buy a Big Breakfast meal from McDonald's (MCD) in New York, every three months. If you are a retiree, banking entirely on Nvidia's dividends to get by, you would need to own loads and loads of NVDA shares to avoid going hungry.
\n
Is Nvidia A Good Dividend Stock?
\n
Since my commentaryNvidia: Highly Anticipated Stock Split Is A Shot In The Armwas published on May 24, NVDA stock has climbed over 30 percent. The huge jump in share price in just over a month has some calling it a \"crowded trade\".
\n
This is especially because Nvidia Corporation is not a small-cap company. Its market capitalization is around $500 billion. This means Nvidia is 16.7 times larger than AMC Entertainment Holdings, Inc. (AMC) by market cap, and that's after the latter's over 2,500 percent year-to-date gain. Similarly, Nvidia's market cap is more than 30 times higher than another meme stock GameStop Corp. (GME) despite the latter's over 4,700 percent appreciation over the past year.
\n
The resulting puny dividend yield unsurprisingly caused Nvidia to get an F grade in Seeking Alpha'sDividend Scorecard. That's particularly embarrassing considering the grades are relative to the Information Technology sector which provides it with low bars to clear.
\n
Source: Seeking Alpha Premium
\n
For instance, the Information Technology sector has a median dividend yield of 1.2 percent, as compared with the Materials sector's 1.7 percent. Nvidia also scored poorly on other metrics like operating earnings yield and free cash flow yield. This is understandable given that these are near the lowest levels Nvidia has ever experienced since it started its dividend scheme in 2012. The operating earnings yield is derived by taking the operating income and dividing it by the market capitalization.
\n

\n
Nvidia Corporation fared better in the other three categories - dividend safety, dividend growth, and dividend consistency. In terms of dividend safety, NVDA stock scored an A+, though that's as much due to its strong financials as its conservative dividend payout.
\n
Nvidia's payout ratio is 7.4 percent, against the sector median of 32 percent. This means that the chipmaker is giving out less of its earnings as dividends compared with its sectorial peers. Its cash dividend payout ratio is slightly better at 7.2 percent, against the sector median of 22.5 percent. The cash dividend payout ratio is a preferred metric as it uses cash flow rather than earnings that can be manipulated.
\n

\n
Nvidia's dividend cover on a trailing-twelve-month basis is at its highest historically at 13.2 times, surpassing the previous peak in 2018. It is also in a healthy net cash position, after digesting the $7 billionacquisitionof Mellanox Technologies, Ltd. that closed in April last year. The Mellanox deal saw Nvidia issuing $5 billion of notes.
\n

\n
Will The Arm Deal Derail Nvidia's Dividend Payout?
\n
The proposedacquisitionof Arm Limited from SoftBank Group Corp. (OTCPK:SFTBY)(OTCPK:SFTBF) and the SoftBank Vision Fund was announced in September. The transaction is valued at $40 billion or 5.7 times larger than the Mellanox deal. Inevitably, the concern is whether the large purchase will impact the ability of Nvidia to continue its dividend program.
\n
The worry may be unfounded as the bulk of the $40 billion - $21.5 billion - will be satisfied by the issuance of Nvidia shares. Another $5 billion, out of the $40 billion, that SoftBank could receive under an earn-out construct, subject to satisfaction of specific financial performance targets by Arm, may be satisfied in cash or common stock. Nvidia will also issue $1.5 billion in equity to Arm employees.
\n
This leaves a payment of $12 billion in cash, which includes $2 billion payable at signing. The company stated that it planned to finance the cash portion of the transaction with balance sheet cash. Based on the May 2021 quarterly report, Nvidia has enough to pay with some change. It has $12.7 billion in combined cash and equivalents as well as short-term investments.
\n
Furthermore, Nvidia still has months to build up that cash before the clearance by antitrust regulators around the world to conclude the deal. Most importantly, the press release stated that theArm dealwill be \"immediately accretive to NVIDIA’s non-GAAP gross margin and EPS.\"
\n
Will Nvidia's Dividend Grow? Is Nvidia A Good Dividend Stock For Long-term Investors?
\n
Nvidia Corporation became a dividend-paying company more than eight years ago with a quarterly dividend of $0.075 declared on 8 November 2012. The dividend amount has since doubled to $0.16, beginning from 15 November 2018.
\n
Source: Seeking Alpha Premium
\n
Wall Street analysts are not expecting Nvidia to change its dividend amount until 2023 when the consensus forecast is for the dividend to increase to $0.68 on an annual basis. That would bump the dividend yield slightly to 0.09 percent if the share price remains the same.
\n
Source: Seeking Alpha Premium
\n
Although we don't have dividend visibility beyond 2023, we can get some clues from the EPS estimates. Analysts are projecting Nvidia's EPS to more than triple in a decade, as compared to the year ending January 2021. In general, we should be expecting that the dividend grows along with the EPS. Otherwise, we can count on activist shareholders hounding the management to do so.
\n
Source: Seeking Alpha Premium
\n
The icing on the cake would be a better-than-expected EPS, which corresponds to higher dividend expectation as well. Nvidia has delivered rather consistent, decent-sized, earnings surprises in the past few years, boding well for its future performance.
\n
Source: Seeking Alpha Premium
\n
Is NVDA Stock A Buy Now?
\n
With Nvidia scoring an A in momentum based on Seeking Alpha's quant rating, the stock is arguably for momentum traders. For the others, the rapid rise in the share price has left the market wondering if there will be a pullback as the stock catches a breather.
\n
The price target upside for Nvidia is a negative 8.4 percent. This means that the stock has run ahead of the analysts' consensus price target. While having a negative price target upside is not uncommon for Nvidia, it is still a strong indication that investors need to strongly consider whether the potential for appreciation remains attractive. This is especially as analysts have already made sharp upwards revisions to their price targets in the past weeks.
\n
Data by YCharts
\n
The company's involvement in data centers, autonomous driving, gaming, and artificial intelligence applications are exciting developments. However, investors would need to consider if these catalysts are already priced into the stock. Its market capitalization is around $500 billion. This means Nvidia is 16.7 times larger than AMC Entertainment Holdings, Inc. (AMC) by market cap, and that's after the latter's over 2,500 percent year-to-date gain. Similarly, Nvidia's market cap is more than 30 times higher than another meme stock GameStop Corp. (GME) despite the latter's over 4,700 percent appreciation over the past year.\nThe resulting puny dividend yield unsurprisingly caused Nvidia to get an F grade in Seeking Alpha'sDividend Scorecard. That's particularly embarrassing considering the grades are relative to the Information Technology sector which provides it with low bars to clear.\nSource: Seeking Alpha Premium\nFor instance, the Information Technology sector has a median dividend yield of 1.2 percent, as compared with the Materials sector's 1.7 percent. Nvidia also scored poorly on other metrics like operating earnings yield and free cash flow yield. This is understandable given that these are near the lowest levels Nvidia has ever experienced since it started its dividend scheme in 2012. The operating earnings yield is derived by taking the operating income and dividing it by the market capitalization.\n\nNvidia Corporation fared better in the other three categories - dividend safety, dividend growth, and dividend consistency. In terms of dividend safety, NVDA stock scored an A+, though that's as much due to its strong financials as its conservative dividend payout.\nNvidia's payout ratio is 7.4 percent, against the sector median of 32 percent. This means that the chipmaker is giving out less of its earnings as dividends compared with its sectorial peers. Its cash dividend payout ratio is slightly better at 7.2 percent, against the sector median of 22.5 percent. The cash dividend payout ratio is a preferred metric as it uses cash flow rather than earnings that can be manipulated.\n\nNvidia's dividend cover on a trailing-twelve-month basis is at its highest historically at 13.2 times, surpassing the previous peak in 2018. It is also in a healthy net cash position, after digesting the $7 billionacquisitionof Mellanox Technologies, Ltd. that closed in April last year. The Mellanox deal saw Nvidia issuing $5 billion of notes.\n\nWill The Arm Deal Derail Nvidia's Dividend Payout?\nThe proposedacquisitionof Arm Limited from SoftBank Group Corp. (OTCPK:SFTBY)(OTCPK:SFTBF) and the SoftBank Vision Fund was announced in September. The transaction is valued at $40 billion or 5.7 times larger than the Mellanox deal. Inevitably, the concern is whether the large purchase will impact the ability of Nvidia to continue its dividend program.\nThe worry may be unfounded as the bulk of the $40 billion - $21.5 billion - will be satisfied by the issuance of Nvidia shares. Another $5 billion, out of the $40 billion, that SoftBank could receive under an earn-out construct, subject to satisfaction of specific financial performance targets by Arm, may be satisfied in cash or common stock. Nvidia will also issue $1.5 billion in equity to Arm employees.\nThis leaves a payment of $12 billion in cash, which includes $2 billion payable at signing. The company stated that it planned to finance the cash portion of the transaction with balance sheet cash. Based on the May 2021 quarterly report, Nvidia has enough to pay with some change. It has $12.7 billion in combined cash and equivalents as well as short-term investments.\nFurthermore, Nvidia still has months to build up that cash before the clearance by antitrust regulators around the world to conclude the deal. Most importantly, the press release stated that theArm dealwill be \"immediately accretive to NVIDIA’s non-GAAP gross margin and EPS.\"\nWill Nvidia's Dividend Grow? Is Nvidia A Good Dividend Stock For Long-term Investors?\nNvidia Corporation became a dividend-paying company more than eight years ago with a quarterly dividend of $0.075 declared on 8 November 2012. The dividend amount has since doubled to $0.16, beginning from 15 November 2018.\nSource: Seeking Alpha Premium\nWall Street analysts are not expecting Nvidia to change its dividend amount until 2023 when the consensus forecast is for the dividend to increase to $0.68 on an annual basis. That would bump the dividend yield slightly to 0.09 percent if the share price remains the same.\nSource: Seeking Alpha Premium\nAlthough we don't have dividend visibility beyond 2023, we can get some clues from the EPS estimates. Analysts are projecting Nvidia's EPS to more than triple in a decade, as compared to the year ending January 2021. In general, we should be expecting that the dividend grows along with the EPS. Otherwise, we can count on activist shareholders hounding the management to do so.\nSource: Seeking Alpha Premium\nThe icing on the cake would be a better-than-expected EPS, which corresponds to higher dividend expectation as well. Nvidia has delivered rather consistent, decent-sized, earnings surprises in the past few years, boding well for its future performance.\nSource: Seeking Alpha Premium\nIs NVDA Stock A Buy Now?\nWith Nvidia scoring an A in momentum based on Seeking Alpha's quant rating, the stock is arguably for momentum traders. For the others, the rapid rise in the share price has left the market wondering if there will be a pullback as the stock catches a breather.\nThe price target upside for Nvidia is a negative 8.4 percent. This means that the stock has run ahead of the analysts' consensus price target. While having a negative price target upside is not uncommon for Nvidia, it is still a strong indication that investors need to strongly consider whether the potential for appreciation remains attractive. This is especially as analysts have already made sharp upwards revisions to their price targets in the past weeks.\nData by YCharts\nThe company's involvement in data centers, autonomous driving, gaming, and artificial intelligence applications are exciting developments. However, investors would need to consider if these catalysts are already priced into the stock. Investors who had been \"burned\" by the sharp falls in the so-called growth stocks in the previous quarter would advise against chasing Nvidia's share price climb.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":70,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9986794459,"gmtCreate":1667012356272,"gmtModify":1676537849693,"author":{"id":"3576631507527148","authorId":"3576631507527148","name":"Cheria","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3576631507527148","authorIdStr":"3576631507527148"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$PayPal(PYPL)$<v-v data-views=\"1\"></v-v> It's time to wake up","listText":"$PayPal(PYPL)$<v-v data-views=\"1\"></v-v> It's time to wake up","text":"$PayPal(PYPL)$ It's time to wake up","images":[{"img":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/0bd9b9d4abd6b9ee7e3cf0d7891ec2bb","width":"1125","height":"2327"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9986794459","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":536,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9056734267,"gmtCreate":1655081354559,"gmtModify":1676535557502,"author":{"id":"3576631507527148","authorId":"3576631507527148","name":"Cheria","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3576631507527148","authorIdStr":"3576631507527148"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Tesla Motors(TSLA)$Buy now b4 the share split?","listText":"$Tesla Motors(TSLA)$Buy now b4 the share split?","text":"$Tesla Motors(TSLA)$Buy now b4 the share split?","images":[{"img":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/fe33d812a47167efea77293148b96b72","width":"1242","height":"4035"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9056734267","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":236,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"lives":[]}
