Read on for competing bullish and bearish takes on the stock from two Motley Fool contributors.</p><h2>Bear case: Nio is not growing profits, and that matters more than sales</h2><p><b>Parkev Tatevosian: </b>My bear case on Nio centers on its slow progress toward profitability. The company has done a solid job of ramping up production and rolling out its battery-swapping technology. However, losses on the bottom line are mounting, with no end in sight.</p><p>Making matters worse, a price war is percolating in the electric vehicle industry. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/TSLA\">Tesla</a> announced several rounds of price cuts across several of its models. Rivals are responding with reductions of their own. Fierce competition is rarely conducive to profitability in an industry.</p><p>Indeed, Nio&#39;s operating losses have ballooned from $705 million in 2020 to $2.2 billion in 2022. Simultaneously, its sales have exploded from $2.5 billion to $7.1 billion. It seems that the more Nio sells, the more money it loses. That might be an oversimplified observation because the company is laying the groundwork for what could be profitable years in the future. Still, investors have yet to see strong evidence of that happening.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c99efd6abc8623e05a2fc4d57d22c0c3\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"433\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>NIO PS Ratio data by YCharts.</p><p>The stock is selling for a price-to-sales (P/S) ratio of 1.9, which is near the lowest multiple it has borne in several years. However, I am sometimes skeptical of P/S multiples when a company consistently loses money on the bottom line. It&#39;s easier to sell your products and services when you price them at less than it costs to create them.</p><p>For those reasons, investors looking for a growth stock with potential might be better served by searching elsewhere.</p><h2>Bull case: Attractive valuation against a promising industry backdrop</h2><p><b>Keith Noonan: </b>Despite growing vehicle revenue roughly 60% year over year in the fourth quarter, Nio missed its vehicle delivery target and posted a much wider-than-expected loss. The closely watched headline CPI has been falling steadily since June, when annual price growth peaked above 9%, and is on track to reach its lowest level since October 2021 if the data comes in line with forecasts.But the month-to-month changes have been more varied, and prices climbed between December and January, according to consensus expectations. Economists surveyed by FactSet expect the CPI rose 0.5% last month, up from a 0.1% increase the month before.Excluding the volatile food and energy sectors, so-called core CPI is expected to have climbed 0.4% in January. The mood around Amazon has soured to such an extent that J.P. Morgan’s Doug Anmuth thinks investor sentiment has reached a “multi-year low.”The analyst cites several key areas investors are mulling over right now. These include: “1) AWS revenue deceleration & margin compression during a challenging macro environment; 2) Retail top-line growth & operating income as discretionary spending pulls back while AMZN works through its elevated cost structure & early headcount reductions; & 3) Overall profitability & FCF inflection as capex spend normalizes.”These are issues also on Anmuth’s mind and with the “challenging macro environment” impacting both Amazon’s Retail business and AWS, the 5-star analyst believes it’s time for some estimate trimming.For Q4, Anmuth now expects Net Sales of $143.4 billion, compared to $145.15 billion beforehand. Accounting for increased “macro pressure” on cloud spending, the new estimate also factors in AWS year-over-year growth of 21%, further declining from the mid-20’s% seen at the end of Q3.And looking into next year, Anmuth has also lowered his expectations for 2023’s haul; anticipating AWS growth to decelerate to 17%, Anumth’s revenue forecast is lowered by ~2% to $563 billion (+11% YoY FXN). The 2023 OI (operating income) forecast is also reduced by ~21% to $19.4 billion (3.4% margin, up 68% YoY).That said, while cognizant of the next few months’ “elevated cloud concerns and macro uncertainty,” Anmuth hasn’t turned into an AMZN bear, believing there is still a “significant secular shift toward e-commerce & cloud ahead.” And through 2023, the stock should also start to see the benefit of “easing retail comps.”“Importantly,” adds Anmuth, “AMZN is focused on restoring higher profitability & FCF, with better fulfillment network throughput & headcount reductions.” As such, on the back of negative FCF during 2021 and 2022, next year, Anmuth expects FCF to “inflect to positive” $17 billion.All in all, Anmuth rates AMZN shares an Overweight (i.e. Buy) although the price target is lowered from $145 to $130. The Chinese auto company&#39;s share price trades down a staggering 86% from the high it reached in February 2021.</p><p>Should investors buy this high-risk, high-reward EV stock on the pullback, or is there still too much downside potential even on the heels of its big sell-off? Read on for competing bullish and bearish takes on the stock from two Motley Fool contributors.</p><h2>Bear case: Nio is not growing profits, and that matters more than sales</h2><p><b>Parkev Tatevosian: </b>My bear case on Nio centers on its slow progress toward profitability. The company has done a solid job of ramping up production and rolling out its battery-swapping technology. However, losses on the bottom line are mounting, with no end in sight.</p><p>Making matters worse, a price war is percolating in the electric vehicle industry. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/TSLA\">Tesla</a> announced several rounds of price cuts across several of its models. Rivals are responding with reductions of their own. Fierce competition is rarely conducive to profitability in an industry.</p><p>Indeed, Nio&#39;s operating losses have ballooned from $705 million in 2020 to $2.2 billion in 2022. Simultaneously, its sales have exploded from $2.5 billion to $7.1 billion. It seems that the more Nio sells, the more money it loses. That might be an oversimplified observation because the company is laying the groundwork for what could be profitable years in the future. Still, investors have yet to see strong evidence of that happening.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c99efd6abc8623e05a2fc4d57d22c0c3\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"433\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>NIO PS Ratio data by YCharts.</p><p>The stock is selling for a price-to-sales (P/S) ratio of 1.9, which is near the lowest multiple it has borne in several years. However, I am sometimes skeptical of P/S multiples when a company consistently loses money on the bottom line. It&#39;s easier to sell your products and services when you price them at less than it costs to create them.</p><p>For those reasons, investors looking for a growth stock with potential might be better served by searching elsewhere.</p><h2>Bull case: Attractive valuation against a promising industry backdrop</h2><p><b>Keith Noonan: </b>Despite growing vehicle revenue roughly 60% year over year in the fourth quarter, Nio missed its vehicle delivery target and posted a much wider-than-expected loss. With its research-and-development costs more than doubling last quarter and manufacturing expenses rising as well, the business dove deeper into the red, and the share price slumped following the earnings release.</p><p>Potentially adding more cause for concern, guidance for vehicle deliveries to be between 31,000 and 33,000 in the first quarter suggests a roughly 20% unit decline on a sequential basis.</p><p>Investors have been jumpy when it comes to EV stocks lately, and growth-dependent stocks generally remain out of favor with the market due to the slew of macroeconomic pressures and uncertainties at hand. Accordingly, it&#39;s not surprising that the market reacted very negatively to Nio&#39;s Q4 results and short-term guidance.</p><p>But risk-tolerant investors should give the stock consideration at current prices. As Parkev noted above, Nio&#39;s trailing P/S ratio of 1.9 sits near its historical low. Admittedly, the EV player still needs to prove that it can shift into delivering profits, but there&#39;s a path to achieving that feat as the business taps into the growth of China&#39;s EV market and leverages economies of scale.</p><p>The sequential decline for deliveries expected this quarter largely appears to be due to vehicle launch cycles, and new vehicle debuts later in the year should do a lot to reverse this trend. In fact, management anticipates achieving a monthly delivery rate of roughly 30,000 vehicles by the end of the year. If the business can hit that target, sentiment surrounding the stock could change quickly.</p><p>At current prices, Nio trades just 6.5% above its lifetime low, and shares could be worthwhile for investors seeking high-risk, high-reward plays.</p><h2>Should you buy Nio stock today?</h2><p>Unless you have above-average risk tolerance, Nio might not make for a sensible portfolio addition. Macroeconomic conditions are pressuring valuations for growth stocks right now, and the EV maker is facing mounting losses and some tough competition.</p><p>On the other hand, for more risk-tolerant investors aiming to build exposure to China&#39;s EV market, the stock could have appeal following recent pullbacks. The company has done a solid job of ramping up production and rolling out its battery-swapping technology. Tesla announced several rounds of price cuts across several of its models. Rivals are responding with reductions of their own. It's easier to sell your products and services when you price them at less than it costs to create them.For those reasons, investors looking for a growth stock with potential might be better served by searching elsewhere.Bull case: Attractive valuation against a promising industry backdropKeith Noonan: Despite growing vehicle revenue roughly 60% year over year in the fourth quarter, Nio missed its vehicle delivery target and posted a much wider-than-expected loss. With its research-and-development costs more than doubling last quarter and manufacturing expenses rising as well, the business dove deeper into the red, and the share price slumped following the earnings release.Potentially adding more cause for concern, guidance for vehicle deliveries to be between 31,000 and 33,000 in the first quarter suggests a roughly 20% unit decline on a sequential basis.Investors have been jumpy when it comes to EV stocks lately, and growth-dependent stocks generally remain out of favor with the market due to the slew of macroeconomic pressures and uncertainties at hand. Accordingly, it's not surprising that the market reacted very negatively to Nio's Q4 results and short-term guidance.But risk-tolerant investors should give the stock consideration at current prices. As Parkev noted above, Nio's trailing P/S ratio of 1.9 sits near its historical low. The ecommerce giant has been affected by the adverse macro conditions while its heavy investments have been weighing on the bottom-line.As such, the company has been unable to deliver the goods in its quarterly financial statements. The mood around Amazon has soured to such an extent that J.P. Morgan’s Doug Anmuth thinks investor sentiment has reached a “multi-year low.”The analyst cites several key areas investors are mulling over right now. These include: “1) AWS revenue deceleration & margin compression during a challenging macro environment; 2) Retail top-line growth & operating income as discretionary spending pulls back while AMZN works through its elevated cost structure & early headcount reductions; & 3) Overall profitability & FCF inflection as capex spend normalizes.”These are issues also on Anmuth’s mind and with the “challenging macro environment” impacting both Amazon’s Retail business and AWS, the 5-star analyst believes it’s time for some estimate trimming.For Q4, Anmuth now expects Net Sales of $143.4 billion, compared to $145.15 billion beforehand. Accounting for increased “macro pressure” on cloud spending, the new estimate also factors in AWS year-over-year growth of 21%, further declining from the mid-20’s% seen at the end of Q3.And looking into next year, Anmuth has also lowered his expectations for 2023’s haul; anticipating AWS growth to decelerate to 17%, Anumth’s revenue forecast is lowered by ~2% to $563 billion (+11% YoY FXN). The 2023 OI (operating income) forecast is also reduced by ~21% to $19.4 billion (3.4% margin, up 68% YoY).That said, while cognizant of the next few months’ “elevated cloud concerns and macro uncertainty,” Anmuth hasn’t turned into an AMZN bear, believing there is still a “significant secular shift toward e-commerce & cloud ahead.” And through 2023, the stock should also start to see the benefit of “easing retail comps.”“Importantly,” adds Anmuth, “AMZN is focused on restoring higher profitability & FCF, with better fulfillment network throughput & headcount reductions.” As such, on the back of negative FCF during 2021 and 2022, next year, Anmuth expects FCF to “inflect to positive” $17 billion.All in all, Anmuth rates AMZN shares an Overweight (i.e. Buy) although the price target is lowered from $145 to $130. Still, there’s upside potential of ~53% from current levels.The Street’s average target is a bit higher; at $140.03, the figure makes room for 12-month gains of ~65%. Another FTX backer, Sequoia Capital, wrote down the full value of its $214 million bet on the exchange, while a person with knowledge of the situation said SoftBank Group Corp. is expecting a loss of around $100 million on its investment.</p><p>Temasek said it backed FTX to invest in a leading digital asset exchange, giving it “market neutral exposure to crypto markets with a fee income model and no trading or balance sheet risk.”</p><p>Temasek said it conducted an “extensive due diligence process” on FTX from February to October 2021. It reviewed FTX’s audited financial statement, which showed it to be profitable. Due diligence efforts also focused on regulatory risk, particularly licensing and compliance. It sought advice from external legal and cybersecurity specialists in key jurisdictions.</p><p>“While this write down of our investment in FTX will not have significant impact on our overall performance, we treat any investment losses seriously and there will be learnings for us from this,” Temasek said.</p><p>Temasek invests in early-stage companies and accepts the binary risks associated with such investments, it said.
