FQ1'23 earnings on 25 May 2022.

In light of macro issues and the collapse of the cryptocurrency market, we expect short-term pain ahead.

As a result, we encourage patience for NVDA investors for now, given the recent market consolidation.

Diamond Dogs/iStock via Getty Images

Investment Thesis

Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) is expected to report earnings for FQ1'23 on 25 May 2022. However, investors should not be rushing to play the earnings game, considering the macro pessimism. Furthermore, given how NVDA had been closely tied to the cryptocurrency mining, we may expect reduced sales moving forward, seeing how the whole market had lost over $1T of combined value in recent days.

However, we encourage NVDA investors to ignore the noise as the stock remains a solid investment for the next decade. Nonetheless, please do not buy the dip as we expect the stock to retrace in the next few weeks, as the market grapples with the macro pessimism and crypto crash.

Why Did NVDA Fall From Grace?

NVDA Revenue, Net Income, and Gross Margin

S&P Capital IQ

Pre-pandemic, NVDA had grown its revenue and net income at a steady CAGR of 16.44% and 18.9%. It obviously grew exponentially in the past two years, given the massive demand for personal devices due to the increased remote work/ study/ entertainment options during the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, NVDA grew its revenues at a tremendous CAGR of 57.05%, while its net income rose even faster at a CAGR of 86.94%. The company also steadily improved its gross margins from 58.8% in FY2017 to 64.9% in FY2022.

NVDA 5Y Stock Price

Seeking Alpha

As a result, it is evident that NVDA investors had benefited from its stellar growth, given that the stock had risen by 580% in the past two years, before the drastic moderation that occurred in late 2021.

NVDA 5Y EV/Revenue and P/E Valuations

S&P Capital IQ

However, we believe that the market correction is expected, given that NVDA was trading at ridiculous valuations at its peak, with EV/NTM Revenue of 28x and NTM P/E of 72.98x. That is way higher than Intel's (INTC) valuation of EV/NTM Revenue of 4.19x and NTM P/E of 15.47x in the past three years, and even AMD (AMD) at 10.59x and 65.39x, respectively. In hindsight, it is evident that NVDA has been highly (maybe over) valued, given its exposure to multiple market segments, such as AI technology, autonomous EVs, cloud computing servers, cryptocurrency, and metaverse, amongst others.

Nonetheless, we may also see a short-term impact, given Meta's (FB) slowing investments in the Reality Labs ( metaverse),reduced demand for GPUs from the crypto mining, and impacted auto production outputs from China's Zero Covid Policy. As a result, given the uncertainties, we expect the pain to continue for a while longer as the market consolidates in the next few quarters.

In the meantime, we encourage you to read our previous article on NVDA, which would help you better understand its market opportunities in the AI technology, automotive, and data center industries.

NVDA Is Still Investing In Growth, Though We See Short-Term Impacts

NVDA Cash/ Equivalents, FCF, and FCF Margins

S&P Capital IQ

Nonetheless, NVDA has been an excellent Free Cash Flow (FCF) generator, while reporting its record-breaking FCF of $8.13B and FCF margins of 30.2% in FY2022. The company also ended the year with a decent $1.99B of cash and equivalents, which will prove helpful for its expanding R&D expenses at an average of 21.5% to its annual revenues in the past five years.

NVDA R&D Expenses and % to Revenue

S&P Capital IQ

Assuming that NVDA continues its reinvestments, we may expect the company to spend up to $7.4B in R&D expenses for FY2023. As an investor myself, I believe that high-growth tech companies, such as NVDA, should build up their future capabilities and product innovations, to keep their advantage in the highly competitive semiconductor industry moving forward. Nonetheless, the risks are also inherent that many companies may slow down their Capex investments in the next few quarters, given the impending recession and rising interest rates. Consequently, NVDA may also reduce its R&D expenses for the short term, given the potential deceleration in revenue growth.

NVDA Projected Revenue and Net Income

S&P Capital IQ

Over the next three years, NVDA is expected to report impressive revenue and net income growth at a CAGR of 18.99% and 27.19%, respectively. For FY2023, consensus estimates that the company will report revenues of $34.77B and a net income of $14.39B, representing remarkable YoY growth of 29.2% and 47.5%, respectively.

Investors will be looking closely at NVDA's FQ1'23 performance, in which it had guided for revenues of $8.1B and gross margins of 65.2%. Assuming that the company successfully smashed its own and consensus estimates of $8.09B, we can be sure of a short-term recovery. However, it is also important to note that NVDA is expected to record a one-time write-off worth $1.36B for the quarter, due to the collapse of the ARM acquisition. In addition, given the quarter's exposure to the prolonged lockdowns in China, NVDA's revenue may also be impacted negatively. As a result, we expect a mixed FQ1'23 performance, potentially leading to a further decline in its stock performance. We shall see.

So, Is NVDA Stock A Buy, Sell, Or Hold?

NVDA is currently trading at an EV/NTM Revenue of 11.93x, and NTM P/E of 30x, lower than its 5Y mean of 13.34x and 39.91x, respectively. The stock is also trading at $171.24 on 19 May 2022, down 50% from 52 weeks high of $346.47. Given the recent market pessimism, there is a likelihood that the stock may retrace further below its 52 weeks low of $135.43 in the next few days, before recovering upon a positive catalyst, namely its FQ1'23 earnings call on 25 May 2022.

Even then, the NVDA stock could potentially remain stagnant post-earnings, similar to its peer, AMD. The latter had reported stellar FQ1'22 earnings, while also raising its FY2022 guidance. In response, the stock rose by 9% from $91.13 to $99.42 on 3 May 2022, before drifting sideways for the next two weeks to reach $96.67 on 19 May 2022. We can be sure that if such an upbeat earnings call had occurred during the heights of the pandemic, AMD would have seen a more pronounced growth in valuation and stock price, similar to the 25% growth after FQ3'21 earnings and 15% growth after FQ2'21 earnings. As a result, interested tech investors must be aware that we are in the midst of maximum pain, significantly worsened by the cryptocurrency winter, the ongoing Ukraine war, and China's Zero Covid Policy.

Given the uncertainties and reasons listed above, we may expect softer FQ2'23 guidance from NVDA's management as well. Though the stock may seem an attractive buy at its current "undervaluation," given its growth potential and promising pipeline, we would encourage prudence for now. We expect a more attractive entry point moving forward, after more clarity from its FQ1'23 earnings call. Patient investors will be awarded.

Therefore, we rate NVDA stock as a Hold for now.

","source":"seekingalpha","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Nvidia: Ridiculous Times Indeed
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nNvidia: Ridiculous Times Indeed\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-05-22 12:00 GMT+8 Seekingalpha\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
SummaryA friendly reminder that Nvidia will be reporting FQ1'23 earnings on 25 May 2022.In light of macro issues and the collapse of the cryptocurrency market, we expect short-term pain ahead. As a ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"NVDA":"英伟达"},"source_url":"https://seekingalpha.com/article/4513449-nvidia-ridiculous-times-indeed","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/5a36db9d73b4222bc376d24ccc48c8a4","article_id":"2237028702","content_text":"SummaryA friendly reminder that Nvidia will be reporting FQ1'23 earnings on 25 May 2022.In light of macro issues and the collapse of the cryptocurrency market, we expect short-term pain ahead. As a result, we encourage patience for NVDA investors for now, given the recent market consolidation.Diamond Dogs/iStock via Getty ImagesInvestment ThesisNvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) is expected to report earnings for FQ1'23 on 25 May 2022. Why Did NVDA Fall From Grace?NVDA Revenue, Net Income, and Gross MarginS&P Capital IQPre-pandemic, NVDA had grown its revenue and net income at a steady CAGR of 16.44% and 18.9%. The company also steadily improved its gross margins from 58.8% in FY2017 to 64.9% in FY2022.NVDA 5Y Stock PriceSeeking AlphaAs a result, it is evident that NVDA investors had benefited from its stellar growth, given that the stock had risen by 580% in the past two years, before the drastic moderation that occurred in late 2021.NVDA 5Y EV/Revenue and P/E ValuationsS&P Capital IQHowever, we believe that the market correction is expected, given that NVDA was trading at ridiculous valuations at its peak, with EV/NTM Revenue of 28x and NTM P/E of 72.98x. That is way higher than Intel's (INTC) valuation of EV/NTM Revenue of 4.19x and NTM P/E of 15.47x in the past three years, and even AMD (AMD) at 10.59x and 65.39x, respectively. In hindsight, it is evident that NVDA has been highly (maybe over) valued, given its exposure to multiple market segments, such as AI technology, autonomous EVs, cloud computing servers, cryptocurrency, and metaverse, amongst others.Nonetheless, we may also see a short-term impact, given Meta's (FB) slowing investments in the Reality Labs ( metaverse),reduced demand for GPUs from the crypto mining, and impacted auto production outputs from China's Zero Covid Policy. As a result, given the uncertainties, we expect the pain to continue for a while longer as the market consolidates in the next few quarters. In the meantime, we encourage you to read our previous article on NVDA, which would help you better understand its market opportunities in the AI technology, automotive, and data center industries.NVDA Is Still Investing In Growth, Though We See Short-Term ImpactsNVDA Cash/ Equivalents, FCF, and FCF MarginsS&P Capital IQNonetheless, NVDA has been an excellent Free Cash Flow (FCF) generator, while reporting its record-breaking FCF of $8.13B and FCF margins of 30.2% in FY2022. The company also ended the year with a decent $1.99B of cash and equivalents, which will prove helpful for its expanding R&D expenses at an average of 21.5% to its annual revenues in the past five years.NVDA R&D Expenses and % to RevenueS&P Capital IQAssuming that NVDA continues its reinvestments, we may expect the company to spend up to $7.4B in R&D expenses for FY2023. Consequently, NVDA may also reduce its R&D expenses for the short term, given the potential deceleration in revenue growth.NVDA Projected Revenue and Net IncomeS&P Capital IQOver the next three years, NVDA is expected to report impressive revenue and net income growth at a CAGR of 18.99% and 27.19%, respectively. For FY2023, consensus estimates that the company will report revenues of $34.77B and a net income of $14.39B, representing remarkable YoY growth of 29.2% and 47.5%, respectively.Investors will be looking closely at NVDA's FQ1'23 performance, in which it had guided for revenues of $8.1B and gross margins of 65.2%. We shall see.So, Is NVDA Stock A Buy, Sell, Or Hold?NVDA is currently trading at an EV/NTM Revenue of 11.93x, and NTM P/E of 30x, lower than its 5Y mean of 13.34x and 39.91x, respectively. The stock is also trading at $171.24 on 19 May 2022, down 50% from 52 weeks high of $346.47. Given the recent market pessimism, there is a likelihood that the stock may retrace further below its 52 weeks low of $135.43 in the next few days, before recovering upon a positive catalyst, namely its FQ1'23 earnings call on 25 May 2022.Even then, the NVDA stock could potentially remain stagnant post-earnings, similar to its peer, AMD. 2021.
\n
Even before the pandemic was ebbing, investors had been flocking back into travel and reopening stocks. Many see them as cheap, based on 2019 results. Others see them greatly exceeding those results due to pent-up demand.
\n
It’s a dream you can feel. Roads are crowded again. Plus, savings rates were high during the pandemic for those who had jobs they could do from home. Much of that money will be spent this year with the economic reopening.
\n
Travel companies should benefit from both efficiency and rising prices post-pandemic. But which stocks are right for you? For this article, I’ve looked at eight of the best-known names. My views on them vary. Generally, I think the companies that were strongest going in should be stronger coming out. Other companies are speculative and have already had good runs through early 2021.
\n
But I’m just the writer. You’re the decider. There should be profits coming throughout the sector, but your mileage as an investor will vary with where you decide to put your money.
\n
\n
Southwest Airlines(NYSE:LUV)
\n
Airbnb(NASDAQ:ABNB)
\n
Disney(NYSE:DIS)
\n
Royal Caribbean(NYSE:RCL)
\n
Delta Air Lines(NYSE:DAL)
\n
Tripadvisor(NASDAQ:TRIP)
\n
United Airlines(NASDAQ:UAL)
\n
Carnival(NYSE:CCL)
\n
\n
Southwest (LUV): The Strongest Airline
\n
The strongest airline going into the pandemic was Southwest Airlines (NYSE:LUV). It’s also the strongest one coming out of it.
\n
But analysts know this. That’s part of why Southwest is also the most expensive airline stock. Its price of about $62 per share today is above where it was before the pandemic hit, before it suspended its 18 cent quarterly dividend.
\n
LUV stock is strong because, while it added $9 billion in long-term debt to its balance sheet during 2020, it ended the year with $13 billion in cash. It has also already begun calling back pilots for the summer flying season.
\n
One of the biggest risks in the stock before the pandemic, though, was Southwest’s dependence on Boeing (NYSE:BA) aircraft, especially the troubled 737-MAX. The company has doubled down on that this year, ordering 100 more of the planes. CEO Gary Kelly says he has complete faith in the aircraft, but some have already been grounded again after Boeing reported electrical problems.
\n
That said, Southwest is also changing its route structure post-pandemic, focusing on smaller vacation markets like Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and dramatically increasing the number of flights to Austin, Texas. It’s this ability to respond quickly to changing market conditions that makes Southwest one of the best reopening stocks to buy for post-pandemic growth.
\n
Is Airbnb (ABNB) the New King of Travel?
\n
Before the pandemic,Booking Holdings (NASDAQ:BKNG), which began life as Priceline, was the unquestioned king of the travel market. However, there’s a new king in the post-pandemic era: Airbnb.
\n
Airbnb only came public in 2020, but ABNB stock rocketed out of the gate. Shares were offered at $68 each. However, they started trading at $146 on Dec. 10. Since then, they’re up another 21%, even after investors took profit when they briefly rose over $200 per share in February.
\n
But Airbnb may now be overvalued. Currently, it has a market capitalization of $107 billion on 2020 sales of $3.4 billion. Even if you write that year off, its selling at over 22 times its 2019 revenue of $4.8 billion.
\n
Airbnb specializes in renting out bedrooms, apartments and personal homes. That’s the promise. But as the company has grown, professionals and investors have moved in. Just 5% of owners now control one-third of all listings. Additionally, some cities are fighting Airbnb. This strict regulation, especially in tourist cities, could dramatically slow its growth.
\n
Rivals aren’t sitting on their hands, either. Booking has a comparable version of Airbnb and Expedia (NASDAQ:EXPE) is heavily advertising its version, Vrbo. Plus, Airbnb’s new “Experiences” business, which some analysts consider to be a growth catalyst, is a copy of something Tripadvisor has been doing for years.
\n
It’s possible that this company will keep rising as one of the reopening stocks. It’s also possible it won’t.
\n
Travel Gives Disney (DIS) a Second Stage of Growth
\n
Disney has been a standout during the pandemic. Shares of DIS stock are up 77% over the past one year, thanks mainly to the success of its streaming strategy. It now has some 137 million paying customers across its various streaming services like Hulu, ESPN+ and Disney+.
\n
Now, it’s possible that travel will add a second stage to Disney’s rocketing success. Before the pandemic, its travel and resorts business represented some 40% of the company’s revenue. Most of that was shut down in early 2020. Now, though, it’s coming back. As it does, revenue should quickly recover from the 22% hit Disney suffered in 2020.
\n
Unfortunately, many analysts think those gains may already be in the stock. Shares were hit by profit-taking in early 2021 and now trade below their February highs.
\n
Still, if you’re looking for long-term value, most analysts still believe in Disney as one of the reopening stocks. Of the 20 analysts following it at Tipranks,17 say it’s a buy.Bank of America (NYSE:BAC) is especially optimistic, despite the shares now trading for about 135 times levered annual cash flow. It was selling at around 25 times before the pandemic hit.
\n
Royal Caribbean (RCL) Is the Most Investable Cruise Line
\n
During the latter part of the last decade, Royal Caribbean chose to grow its fleet of ships at a sustainable rate. It’s now benefitting from that strategy, becoming the most“investable”of the cruise line stocks. Right now, shares of RCL stock are up 125% for the past one year, as optimism grows for reopening stocks.
\n
Royal Caribbean owns Celebrity and Silversea cruises as well as its namesake fleet. It completed the purchase of Silversea last year, then sold Azamara, a luxury brand,to private equity. It also took a Spanish line called Pullmantur bankrupt and hopes to relaunch it later this year.
\n
While the company’s net debt rose 42% during 2020 to $16.45 billion, the company had $4.4 billion in cash at the end of December. It’s also loaning $40 million to travel agents to get them through and hopes to return to full U.S. service by November. Meanwhile, pent-up demand is so great that it’s already filling ships in Singapore for“cruises to nowhere.”
\n
Delta (DAL) Has Yet to Regain Its Highs
\n
While Southwest now sells for more than it did before the pandemic, shares of Delta Air Lines remain about 20% below where they were. Today, DAL stock trades for almost $47.
\n
That’s because, while domestic travel is starting to return to normal and Delta plans on filling its middle seats in May, international travel remains slow. Even domestic travel is running on optimism. About 1.6 million people flew one day in early April. Before the pandemic, back in 2019, that number was well over 2 million on the same day.
\n
Despite the government’s turning some of its pandemic loans into grants, Delta ended 2020 with $33 billion in long term debt, against assets of $71 billion. Moreover, Delta had an adjusted loss of $3.55 per share for its first-quarter earnings.
\n
Once Delta has positive free cash flow again,InvestorPlace’s Mark Hake expects the stock to take off. Most analysts don’t, however. Now, only about half the analysts tracked by Tipranks call it a buy, with an average price target of $56.50.
\n
All in all, while Delta has survived the pandemic, it has also mortgaged much of its future. That mortgage must be paid before I see this pick of the reopening stocks as a buy again.
\n
All in all, while Delta has survived the pandemic, it has also mortgaged much of its future. That mortgage must be paid before I see this pick of the reopening stocks as a buy again.
\n
Trip Advisor (TRIP) Has a Plan for the New Normal
\n
Tripadvisor has a plan for big profits in the post-pandemic world. Basically, it wants to become the Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) of travel.
\n
That doesn’t mean running the whole travel business. Instead, it means charging customers $99 per year for special discounts and perks on rooms. It calls this new program Tripadvisor Plus.
\n
This idea could be a win-win-win. Hotels and resorts will get loyal customers at a discount. Customers who sign up will get discounts and perks. And Tripadvisor will get cash for running the program.
\n
Right now, though, the company badly needs investors to forget 2020, when it lost $2.14 per share on revenue of just $604 million. Rather, it wants them to remember 2019, when the company made $126 million, or 91 cents per share, on revenue of $1.56 billion. Essentially, they want a mulligan for the past year.
\n
But 2020 did happen— and it did substantial financial damage at that. That said, while 2021 should start off slow, results should also rise sharply once the new program’s revenues start coming in. So, if you believe in it’s new program’s pitch, TRIP stock maybe one of the better reopening stocks for you.
\n
Speculators Are Now Betting on United Airlines (UAL)
\n
Investment often reminds me of westward migration; the speculators come in first, then come the investors. Right now, UAL stock is benefitting from speculation.
\n
While Southwest Airlines has passed its 2020 high and Delta Air Lines is approaching it, United is just halfway back. Its market cap of $18 billion is less than half its 2019 revenue of $43 billion.
\n
The airline should survive, but it’s going to be a bumpy ride. Analysts expect a first-quarter loss of $6.23 per share. The airline’s bond rating is also below investment grade and its most recent debt issue carried an interest rate of 4.875%. Still, speculators have been rushing in as the airline said it was probably cash flow positive in March.
\n
Going beyond speculative gains, however, will mean regaining the trust of employees, the government and passengers, which was not helped by an engineblowing out back in February.
\n
As a result, analysts are divided on United, with only about half of them saying it’s a buy on Tipranks. Even InvestorPlace’s Louis Navellier calls this one of the reopening stocks“a poor way to make money.”
\n
Will Cruising Resume Soon Enough for Carnival (CCL)?
\n
Of all the reopening stocks on this list, CCL stock stands out as a cautionary tale.
\n
Before the pandemic, Carnival was buying boats with both hands, planning to add 22 new liners by 2025. Basically, it was putting all of its cash flow to work.
\n
Then the music stopped. While based in Miami, Carnival has its legal home in Panama. This made it ineligible for pandemic relief. It was only thanks to the Federal Reserve’s expansion of the money supply that Carnival was able to survive. But the price was steep. One $4 billion bond carries an interest rate of 11.5%, while another $1.75 billion bond is convertible into stock, diluting shareholders.
\n
Now in April, though, shares are back to around $28 with a market cap of $32 billion after 2019 revenue of $20.8 billion. That’s still less than the $57 billion in assets it carries on the books, mainly in the form of “property and equipment” like its boats.
\n
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) now believes cruising could resume this summer. Many see them as cheap, based on 2019 results. Others see them greatly exceeding those results due to pent-up demand.\nIt’s a dream you can feel. Roads are crowded again. Plus, savings rates were high during the pandemic for those who had jobs they could do from home. Much of that money will be spent this year with the economic reopening.\nTravel companies should benefit from both efficiency and rising prices post-pandemic. But which stocks are right for you? Coatue also added to its bet on vaccine maker Moderna, while Stephen Mandel’s Lone Pine Capital took a new stake in the biotech company worth more than $900 million. These purchases were a reversal from the first quarter, when many hedge funds cut positions inWork From Homecompanies like Peloton and Zoom as vaccinations began to ramp up in the U.S. That, in turn, fueled wagers on companies that had been hardest-hit by travel restrictions and remote work.
\n
Tiger and Coatue also increased their stakes in Zoom in the three months through June, their 13F filings revealed. The two funds, along with D1 Capital Partners, were among those that added to positions in Peloton, while Viking Global Investors made a new bet on the exercise equipment company.
\n
13F filings also showed that funds including Soros Fund Management and Temasek snapped up shares of fintech companies. Marqeta was a top new buy for Soros, while Temasek disclosed new positions in SoFi Technologies, Flywire and Payoneer Global. Marqeta and SoFi tumbled last week after reporting disappointing second-quarter results. Temasek also snapped up shares in two new BlackRock carbon transition ETFs (LCTU and LCTD), while Soros took a new position in electric-vehicle producer Proterra, as clean energy continues to be a prominent trend among investors.
\n
Coatue, Viking and Gabe Plotkin’s Melvin Capital Management also added new positions in Beijing-based JD.com Inc. in the quarter, a move that would prove to be rather unfortunate as shares of the giant online vendor have slumped 16% since June 30. Chinese shares have tumbled since June as Beijing banned for-profit tutoring companies and ordered more than two dozen tech firms to carry out internal inspections and address issues such as data security.
\n
Some, such as Soros were either lucky or good in cutting their exposure to Chinese ADRs in the second quarter, ahead of the furious selloff. Soros Fund Management exited many of its investments in Chinese ADRs including Baidu, Vipshop Holdings, Tencent Music Entertainment Group and IQiyi, positions it snapped up during the collapse of Archegos Capital Management in March and April, as noted previously.
\n
Other funds also dumped China-based companies with listings in the U.S. D1 Capital sold its 25-million-share stake in New Oriental Education & Technology Group, while Soroban Capital Partners exited its 2.06-million-share stake in Alibaba. Soroban’s largest new positions favored tech, with the top three additions being Facebook, Twitter and Netflix.
\n
Some other notable 13F findings:
\n
\n
Michael Burry, of “The Big Short” fame, owned puts on Cathie Wood’s ARK Innovation ETF and increased its Tesla puts (more here).
\n
Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway added to just three positions in the quarter and trimmed its holdings in several companies, including a full exit of controversial Alzheimer’s drug developer Biogen. As firstnoted earlier, Berkshire’s only new position in the quarter, 1.55 million shares of Organon was the result of a spinoff of the women’s health pharmaceutical company from Berkshire holding Merck. Its most significant addition was a 21% increase in its position in grocer Kroger. Besides Biogen, exits included Liberty Global’s Class A shares and Axalta Coating Systems, while Berkshire trimmed positions in Marsh & McLennan, Abbvie, General Motors and Bristol-Myers Squibb.
\n
Seth Klarman’s long-standing investment in Rupert Murdoch’s media empire finally came to an end during the second quarter. Baupost Group sold its entire Fox Corp. stake, including 7.6 million Class A shares and 5.7 million Class B shares with a combined market value of $446 million at the end of March.
\n
Carl Icahn, who runs a concentrated portfolio with just 17 reportable investments, sold all of his 9.59 million shares of Tenneco in the quarter. He also has a new undisclosed position in an unnamed stock -- an unusual step that requires a separate filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
\n
Dan Loeb's Third Point added SentinelOne Class A to its investments and exited IAA in the second quarter. The fund also added to its holdings in Intel, boosting its stake to 14 million shares from 1 million, while decreasing its stake in Charter Communications Class A. Upstart Holdings was Third Point's biggest holding, representing 9.8% of disclosed assets
\n
Elliott Investment Management’s largest purchases of the quarter included a 3-million-share buy of Twitter. Shares of GameStop soared nearly 16% on Wednesday, pushing its gains this week to 37%. Another Reddit target, AMC Entertainment, rallied more than 19%, bringing its weekly advance to more than 60%. Both were in the green again Thursday.Bank of America is identifying the potential up-and-coming WallStreetBets targets by analyzing for clients how many mentions each stock gets on Reddit, among other things like short interest.“We believe some of the new retail activity may be here to stay given zero commissions, more time at home, and high savings rates – but we do expect a moderation this year amid peak stimulus, re-opening and any potential regulatory action,” Bank of America equity and quant strategist Jill Carey Hall told clients in a note.Bank of America gave clients a list of the top small-to-mid cap stocks to watch during the return of the meme stock craze. The listed names have the most mentions on Reddit and short interest above the 5% average for the S&P 500.Take a look at the list here.AMC has overtaken GameStop as the no. 1 mentioned stock on the list, as WallStreetsBets mentions rise to their highest level since March. GameStop was embroiled in an epic short squeeze in January, where the brick-and-mortar video game retailer’s share price skyrocketed to $483 per share, and subsequently lost 90% of its value.“While GME discussions have continued to moderate, it remains the #2 mentioned SMID cap – and both GME and AMC shares have begun to surge again in recent days,” said Hall. “But our Equity Derivatives team notes that these two stocks exhibit all three signposts that have been associated with retail-led speculative rallies nearing their end.” (SMID means small- to mid-cap stock.)GameStop and AMC still each have 21% of their float shares sold short, according to Bank of America, compared with an average of 5% short interest in a typical U.S. stock.Beyond MeatandBioCryst Pharmaceuticalsare the two newest stocks getting attention on chat rooms. Beyond Meat had 25 mentions and BioCryst had 31 mentions on Reddit since last week.
