When the brokerage firm reports second-quarter earnings after the market close on Wednesday, shareholders will have a chance to size up how those new efforts are faring.Analysts surveyed by Factset anticipate the company will report strong second quarter earnings growth. They are looking for earnings per share of 16 cents on revenue of $640 million. That compares with earnings of three cents and revenue of $486 million for the second quarter of 2023.The earnings report lands at a volatile moment in markets, with a sharp sell-off in equities earlier this week. Shares of Robinhood have plummeted 24% over the past month, falling to $17.05 at the close on Tuesday and erasing some of the stock's substantial run-up earlier this year. The stock is still up 35% year to date compared with a 9.9% gain for the S&P 500.","content":"\n
\n By Andrew Welsch \n
\n
\n Robinhood Markets reported strong second-quarter earnings Wednesday thanks to a surge in revenue from cryptocurrency and options trading revenue. \n
\n
\n The company's earnings, which trounced Wall Street estimates, also benefited from Robinhood's efforts to sign up more customers for new products, such as its credit card and subscription service. \n
\n
\n Robinhood reported that EPS came in at 21 cents per share and revenue reached a record $682 million. That's up from three cents per share of earnings and revenue of $486 million for the second quarter of 2023. The stock rose in after-hours trading. \n
\n
\n \"This quarter, we kept up the pace with rapid product launches and a relentless drive to provide top value for our customers,\" said CEO Vlad Tenev, who pointed to the company's growing subscription service. \"With Robinhood Gold reaching 2 million subscribers, we're witnessing the flywheel accelerate.\" \n
\n
\n Analysts surveyed by FactSet anticipated Robinhood would report strong second quarter earnings growth. They were looking for earnings of 16 cents on revenue of $640 million. Robinhood's net income increased to $188 million, up from $25 million a year ago. \n
\n
\n The stock price initially showed little change in after-hours trading, hovering around $17 a share. But it climbed about 3% while the company held a conference call with analysts Wednesday evening. \n
\n
\n The earnings report landed at a volatile moment in markets, with a sharp selloff in equities earlier this week. Shares of Robinhood have plummeted 24% over the past month, and erasing some of the stock's substantial run-up earlier this year. The stock is still up 35% year to date compared with a 9% gain for the S&P 500. \n
\n
\n Although Robinhood is best known for its commission-free trading app, it has been striving to grow other business lines and products. Investors got new data points in the quarterly report on how those efforts are proceeding. For instance, the company said its Gold subscription service, which offers investors more tools, data, and other benefits, reached a new high of 2 million subscribers, up 61% year-over-year. \n
\n
\n Assets under custody rose 57% year over year to $139.7 billion, according to the company. And it reported record net deposits of $13.2 billion for the quarter, representing an annualized growth rate of 41%. \n
\n
\n CFO Jason Warnick said during the earnings call that expanding other business lines is critical to the company's future. Gold subscribers tend to keep more assets at Robinhood and use more of the company's services and products, he said. Retirement assets totaled $8.7 billion compared with $0.8 billion at the end of second quarter of 2023, according to the company. \n
\n
\n The Menlo Park, Calif.-based company has been offering customers bonuses to move money to Robinhood, a practice it says has helped it lure clients away from competitors. \n
\n
\n While Robinhood has been developing features for its platform, it's also engaging in M&A. In June, it bought cryptocurrency exchange Bitstamp. And last month, it acquired Pluto, an investment research company that uses artificial intelligence to develop customized investment strategies. On the earnings call, executives indicated that more acquisitions may be on the horizon as the company seeks to further expand its platform for customers. And Robinhood has previously indicated an interest in wealth management. \n
\n
\n On the earnings call, Tenev emphasized that he wants Robinhood to provide a one-stop shop for investors' financial needs. \n
\n
\n \"Long term, we are positioning Robinhood so that it will benefit from a generational wealth transfer that is only beginning now, from baby boomers to Millennials,\" Tenev said. \n
\n
\n Write to Andrew Welsch at andrew.welsch@barrons.com \n
\n
\n This content was created by Barron's, which is operated by Dow Jones & Co. That's up from three cents per share of earnings and revenue of $486 million for the second quarter of 2023. The stock rose in after-hours trading. \n\n\n \"This quarter, we kept up the pace with rapid product launches and a relentless drive to provide top value for our customers,\" said CEO Vlad Tenev, who pointed to the company's growing subscription service. \"With Robinhood Gold reaching 2 million subscribers, we're witnessing the flywheel accelerate.\" \n\n\n Analysts surveyed by FactSet anticipated Robinhood would report strong second quarter earnings growth. They were looking for earnings of 16 cents on revenue of $640 million. Robinhood's net income increased to $188 million, up from $25 million a year ago. \n\n\n The stock price initially showed little change in after-hours trading, hovering around $17 a share. But it climbed about 3% while the company held a conference call with analysts Wednesday evening. \n\n\n The earnings report landed at a volatile moment in markets, with a sharp selloff in equities earlier this week. Shares of Robinhood have plummeted 24% over the past month, and erasing some of the stock's substantial run-up earlier this year. The stock is still up 35% year to date compared with a 9% gain for the S&P 500. \n\n\n Although Robinhood is best known for its commission-free trading app, it has been striving to grow other business lines and products. Investors got new data points in the quarterly report on how those efforts are proceeding. For instance, the company said its Gold subscription service, which offers investors more tools, data, and other benefits, reached a new high of 2 million subscribers, up 61% year-over-year. \n\n\n Assets under custody rose 57% year over year to $139.7 billion, according to the company. And it reported record net deposits of $13.2 billion for the quarter, representing an annualized growth rate of 41%. \n\n\n CFO Jason Warnick said during the earnings call that expanding other business lines is critical to the company's future. Gold subscribers tend to keep more assets at Robinhood and use more of the company's services and products, he said. Retirement assets totaled $8.7 billion compared with $0.8 billion at the end of second quarter of 2023, according to the company. \n\n\n The Menlo Park, Calif.-based company has been offering customers bonuses to move money to Robinhood, a practice it says has helped it lure clients away from competitors. \n\n\n While Robinhood has been developing features for its platform, it's also engaging in M&A. \n\n\n On the earnings call, Tenev emphasized that he wants Robinhood to provide a one-stop shop for investors' financial needs. \n\n\n \"Long term, we are positioning Robinhood so that it will benefit from a generational wealth transfer that is only beginning now, from baby boomers to Millennials,\" Tenev said. \n\n\n Write to Andrew Welsch at andrew.welsch@barrons.com \n\n\n This content was created by Barron's, which is operated by Dow Jones & Co. The company uses AI-powered platforms to monitor and analyze data, with the goal of recognizing patterns and improving processes.

For example, Tampa General Hospital used Palantir's Foundry platform to reduce patient hold time in its Post-Anesthesia Care Unit by 28% through AI-driven data analysis. In addition, AI analysis of nurse schedules, surgery schedules, and census data has improved operational efficiency. After removing bottlenecks, the hospital's nurse staffing ratio increased by 30%.

Palantir's revenue is increasing as its customer base expands

As a result of its ability to drive real-world results, Palantir's AI platforms are in demand. Revenue increased from $0.9 billion in 2020 to $2.2 billion last year. What's more, analysts expect the company's sales to increase to $2.7 billion this year and $3.2 billion in 2025.

Although the majority of Palantir's revenue is from governmental organizations, such as the U.S. Department of Defense, the National Institutes of Health, and the U.K.'s National Health Services, commercial customers are the future. In its most recent quarter (the three months ended on Dec. 31, 2023), Palantir's U.S. commercial customer count surged by 55% year over year. Its U.S. commercial revenue jumped 70% to $131 million.

<app :collapse_on_load=\"false\" :instrument_id=\"343121\" :show_benchmark_compare=\"false\" amount_change=\"-1.50\" average_volume=\"71,295,652\" company_name=\"Palantir Technologies\" current_price=\"23.01\" daily_high=\"24.28\" daily_low=\"22.94\" default_period=\"OneYear\" dividend_yield=\"N/A\" exchange=\"NYSE\" fifty_two_week_high=\"27.50\" fifty_two_week_low=\"7.28\" gross_margin=\"80.62\" logo=\"https://g.foolcdn.com/art/companylogos/mark/PLTR.png\" market_cap=\"$51B\" pe_ratio=\"254.82\" percent_change=\"-6.12\" symbol=\"PLTR\" volume=\"70,008,165\"></app>

Could a $20,000 investment grow to $1 million?

Finally, let's talk about what is reasonable from a stock perspective. Palantir's shares currently trade for about $25. Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton were locked in a race to become the 45th president. But here's another fact that you probably don't know: If you had invested $20,000 in Nvidia stock on that day -- and held it until today -- you'd be a millionaire.NVDA data by YChartsThat's right, just $20,000 invested in the right time -- in the right stock --can set you up for life. So, with that in mind, let's take a look at Palantir Technologies (PLTR -6.12%) and see if it has the same potential.Image source: Getty Images. What does Palantir Technologies do?Palantir is a leading provider of what is called \"big data analytics.\" But what does that really mean?Well, Palantir's business model reminds me of a famous BASF advertising tagline: \"We don't make many of the products you buy; we make many of the products you buy better.\"In a nutshell, Palantir does the same thing, albeit in a very different way. After removing bottlenecks, the hospital's nurse staffing ratio increased by 30%.Palantir's revenue is increasing as its customer base expandsAs a result of its ability to drive real-world results, Palantir's AI platforms are in demand. Revenue increased from $0.9 billion in 2020 to $2.2 billion last year. What's more, analysts expect the company's sales to increase to $2.7 billion this year and $3.2 billion in 2025.Although the majority of Palantir's revenue is from governmental organizations, such as the U.S. Department of Defense, the National Institutes of Health, and the U.K.'s National Health Services, commercial customers are the future. In its most recent quarter (the three months ended on Dec. 31, 2023), Palantir's U.S. commercial customer count surged by 55% year over year. Its U.S. commercial revenue jumped 70% to $131 million.Could a $20,000 investment grow to $1 million? Finally, let's talk about what is reasonable from a stock perspective. Palantir's shares currently trade for about $25. So, for a $20,000 investment to grow to $1 million, shares would need to hit a price of about $1,250. Needless to say, that would take an incredible amount of growth. In compound annual growth rate (CAGR) terms, shares would need to return 47% each year for 10 years.Over a more reasonable 20 years, Palantir stock would still need a CAGR of almost 22% to turn $20,000 into $1 million. That might be a bit much to expect despite Palantir's potential.Nevertheless, long-term investors shouldn't overlook the company. Its AI platform could prove to be a real game-changer across numerous industries, and, with time and patience, modest investments in Palantir stock could still add up to big returns.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":324,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":281781964431568,"gmtCreate":1709823025810,"gmtModify":1709823029975,"author":{"id":"3577178131767316","authorId":"3577178131767316","name":"MerLina","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/3465250a92f21a742e98827607221f91","crmLevel":8,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3577178131767316","authorIdStr":"3577178131767316"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Palantir Technologies Inc.(PLTR)$ 🙏😁","listText":"$Palantir Technologies Inc.(PLTR)$ 🙏😁","text":"$Palantir Technologies Inc.(PLTR)$ 🙏😁","images":[{"img":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/f02018e40d72ae87ae3421616a893209","width":"894","height":"1508"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/281781964431568","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":386,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":279087193911456,"gmtCreate":1709158134431,"gmtModify":1709158139222,"author":{"id":"3577178131767316","authorId":"3577178131767316","name":"MerLina","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/3465250a92f21a742e98827607221f91","crmLevel":8,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3577178131767316","authorIdStr":"3577178131767316"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Missed EPS but sales are good.
