years.","content":"

Key Points

A long-term mindset and a diversified portfolio can help you build life-changing wealth.

Shopifyâs portfolio of software and services simplifies commerce for small businesses.

Upstartâs AI models help banks lend money to more people without taking on additional risk.

Legendary investor Peter Lynch once told investors: "All you need for a lifetime of successful investing is a few big winners." He reasoned that the monster returns generated by a few investments would more than make up for any losses. And that makes sense. If you invest $10 in a stock, the worst outcome is a loss of $10. But there is no limit on the upside. That $10 could grow several-fold in value.

Unfortunately, there is no single formula or valuation metric that will help you pick big winners with absolute certainty. That's why it's important to build a diversified portfolio. Put another way, investors should aim to own at least 25 high-quality stocks. Doing so minimizes your exposure to any single business or industry, which helps reduce downside risk.

With that in mind, Shopify and Upstart Holdings look like good building blocks for a market-beating portfolio. In fact, I think both stocks could grow fourfold over the next 10 years, a pace that would turn $250,000 into $1 million.

Here's why.

1. Shopify

Shopify has become the retail operating system for over 1.7 million businesses. Its portfolio of software and services helps merchants manage sales across physical and digital storefronts, including websites, social platforms, and online marketplaces. Additionally, the Shopify App Store offers thousands of additional software solutions, such as tools for marketing and enterprise resource planning.

Of particular note, the company's business model differentiates it from rivals like Amazon. Specifically, Shopify helps merchants grow their brands and build lasting relationships with customers -- the company doesn't pull sellers onto a common marketplace then compete against them by selling similar products at cheaper prices.

Not surprisingly, Shopify's merchant-centric business model and broad product portfolio have it made quite popular with small- and medium-sized businesses, as evidenced by the company's impressive sales growth over the past 12 months.

SOURCE: YCHARTS. TTM = TRAILING-12-MONTHS.

Impressively, Shopify has grown its bottom line even more quickly, as free cash flow surged 150% to $458 million over the past year. And the company is well-positioned to maintain that momentum, as its founder-led management team is executing on a robust growth strategy.

For instance, the Shopify Fulfillment Network leans on artificial intelligence and collaborative robots to help merchants ship orders more quickly and cost-effectively. And the Shop mobile app aims to drive buyer engagement and boost repeat purchases by making relevant product recommendations. In fact, despite launching in April 2020, the Shop app surpassed 118 million registered users in the second quarter of 2021, and that number continued to rise in the third quarter.

Shopify is currently the most popular e-commerce software platform on the market, powering 27% of all online storefronts. In short, the company has a strong competitive position, and management's ambitious vision should help Shopify capitalize on its $153 billion market opportunity. That's why I think this company could grow fourfold over the next 10 years, achieving a market cap of $550 billion.

2. Upstart Holdings

Upstart is a fintech company on a mission to modernize the consumer credit industry. Traditionally, banks have made lending decisions using relatively small data sets -- even the most sophisticated credit models incorporate just 30 variables. In turn, lenders frequently make the wrong decisions. That means some creditworthy borrowers are rejected, and those that are approved often pay too much in interest.

Upstart uses big data and artificial intelligence to make that system more efficient. Specifically, its platform captures over 1,600 data points per applicant and measures those variables against repayment events. Put another way, each time a borrower makes or misses a payment, Upstart's AI models get a little smarter, creating a flywheel effect: More data means better AI, and better AI means more lending partners (and more data).

Despite being a relatively young company, the early results are promising. Internal studies have shown that Upstart's AI models can reduce loss rates by 75%, while keeping approval rates constant. Alternatively, Upstart can boost approval rates by 173% while keeping loss rates constant.

Given those results, lenders like banks, credit unions, and auto dealerships are adopting Upstart's platform at a rapid pace, and that has fueled an impressive top-line performance over the past year.

SOURCE: YCHARTS. TTM = TRAILING-12-MONTHS.

Of particular note, unlike many high-growth companies, Upstart is profitable on a GAAP basis, as net income reached $77.5 million over the past 12 months. Even so, this fintech has hardly scratched the surface of its potential. In fact, Upstart powered $8.9 billion in loans in the last year, less than 2% of its $753 billion market opportunity, a figure that comprises both personal loan originations and auto loan originations in the U.S.

However, Upstart's market opportunity will likely continue to grow over the coming decade, as management has expressed interest in the $4.5 trillion mortgage origination industry. To that end, I wouldn't be surprised to see Upstart's market cap climb from $9 billion today to $36 billion in 10 years' time. That's why this growth stock looks like a smart long-term investment.

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Want $1 Million? 2 Monster Growth Stocks to Buy Now and Hold for the Next Decade
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nWant $1 Million? 2 Monster Growth Stocks to Buy Now and Hold for the Next Decade\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-01-21 16:27 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Key PointsA long-term mindset and a diversified portfolio can help you build life-changing wealth.Shopifyâs portfolio of software and services simplifies commerce for small businesses.Upstartâs AI ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"UPST":"Upstart Holdings, Inc.","SHOP":"Shopify Inc"},"source_url":"https://www.fool.com/investing/2022/01/20/want-1-million-2-monster-growth-stocks-to-buy-now/","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1171199849","content_text":"Key PointsA long-term mindset and a diversified portfolio can help you build life-changing wealth.Shopifyâs portfolio of software and services simplifies commerce for small businesses.Upstartâs AI models help banks lend money to more people without taking on additional risk.Legendary investor Peter Lynch once told investors: \"All you need for a lifetime of successful investing is a few big winners.\" He reasoned that the monster returns generated by a few investments would more than make up for any losses. Even so, this fintech has hardly scratched the surface of its potential. In fact, Upstart powered $8.9 billion in loans in the last year, less than 2% of its $753 billion market opportunity, a figure that comprises both personal loan originations and auto loan originations in the U.S.However, Upstart's market opportunity will likely continue to grow over the coming decade, as management has expressed interest in the $4.5 trillion mortgage origination industry. To that end, I wouldn't be surprised to see Upstart's market cap climb from $9 billion today to $36 billion in 10 years' time. That's why this growth stock looks like a smart long-term investment.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":304,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9004232313,"gmtCreate":1642605777041,"gmtModify":1676533727138,"author":{"id":"3577249215853134","authorId":"3577249215853134","name":"Cor11","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d43989f36f32977d5b453637037ae8db","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3577249215853134","authorIdStr":"3577249215853134"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"[Smile] [Smile] ","listText":"[Smile] [Smile] ","text":"[Smile] [Smile]","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9004232313","repostId":"1161804842","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":307,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9004194709,"gmtCreate":1642523380731,"gmtModify":1676533718787,"author":{"id":"3577249215853134","authorId":"3577249215853134","name":"Cor11","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d43989f36f32977d5b453637037ae8db","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3577249215853134","authorIdStr":"3577249215853134"},"themes":[],"htmlText":" [Speechless] [Speechless] ","listText":" [Speechless] [Speechless] ","text":"[Speechless] [Speechless]","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9004194709","repostId":"1165340662","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1165340662","pubTimestamp":1642519367,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1165340662?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-01-18 23:22","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Nasdaq Volatility Is New Gut Check for Bottom Feeders","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1165340662","media":"Bloomberg","summary":"âWeâll start to get potentially bigger swingsâ: LPLâs GilbertJPMorgan Chase sees a sharp rise in ret","content":"

âWeâll start to get potentially bigger swingsâ: LPLâs Gilbert

JPMorgan Chase sees a sharp rise in retail buy orders

The Nasdaq MarketSite in New York.Photographer: Michael Nagle/Bloomberg

Is it lion-like courage, or sheep to the slaughter? The company's graphics processing units (GPUs) have been and remain in high demand in hot sectors like gaming, data centers, and artificial intelligence. The stock appreciated by 125% last year, crushing the broader market.

There's an investing philosophy that says that "winners keep winning," but while NVIDIA's business could keep growing at a rapid clip, the stock might disappoint investors in 2022.

Share price gains have outrun revenue gains

The market's positive sentiment toward NVIDIA has been building gradually over the past several years -- for understandable reasons. The company's revenue has grown by 107% over just three years.

Its leadership position in the GPU segment has allowed it to capitalize on the growth of numerous applications that require heavy computing power -- among them, gaming, cryptocurrency mining, data centers, AI, and autonomous driving. NVIDIA has also expanded beyond its core hardware business, developing and tying software into its GPU products to offer more complete solutions to its clients.

NVDA data by YCharts

However, its share price increases have steadily outpaced its revenue growth, and the gap widened throughout 2021. NVIDIA is now nearing nine-bagger returns in just three years.

As such, NVIDIA stock has been valued at a rising premium. It traded at a price-to-sales (P/S) ratio of less than 8 in 2019, but its P/S is approaching 31 today.

Can the stock support this valuation?

I think it's fair to argue that NVIDIA's higher valuation multiples are justified. Its revenue growth has dramatically accelerated over the past several years.

NVDA PS Ratio data by YCharts

Higher valuations typically are based on higher expectations from investors, so NVIDIA's business will need to support its current stock price with strong revenue and earnings growth. However, some of NVIDIA's growth in recent quarters may be related to the global chip shortage, which is pushing product prices higher as demand outstrips supply. In November, PC Magazine reported that the retail price of NVIDIA's RTX 3070 GPU rose 32% over the course of a year, from $569 to $749.

Such increases would undoubtedly help boost revenue growth, but selling more units is likely a more sustainable way for the company to boost its top line. When chipmakers bring more manufacturing capacity online, a return to more competitive pricing would naturally slow down the revenue growth unless the higher number of GPUs sold makes up the difference.

More potential downside than upside

Investors must consider both the potential upsides and downsides of a stock when making buying decisions. Nobody can be sure what the future will hold for NVIDIA, especially in the face of today's inflation and supply chain challenges.

While NVIDIA supplies industries that could continue growing, its own revenue growth might slow, especially given the business world's version of "the law of large numbers," which explains that the bigger a company grows, the harder it is to grow at rapid percentage rates. NVIDIA could finish its fiscal 2021 with more than $26 billion in revenue, and it sports a massive $735 billion market cap.

Analysts seem to be factoring these concerns into their revenue estimates for the chipmaker. The consensus estimate is for 18% revenue growth in fiscal 2022 to $31.5 billion and 16.5% growth in fiscal 2023 to $36.7 billion. The company's graphics processing units (GPUs) have been and remain in high demand in hot sectors like gaming, data centers, and artificial intelligence. The stock appreciated by 125% last year, crushing the broader market. There's an investing philosophy that says that \"winners keep winning,\" but while NVIDIA's business could keep growing at a rapid clip, the stock might disappoint investors in 2022.Share price gains have outrun revenue gainsThe market's positive sentiment toward NVIDIA has been building gradually over the past several years -- for understandable reasons. The company's revenue has grown by 107% over just three years. Its leadership position in the GPU segment has allowed it to capitalize on the growth of numerous applications that require heavy computing power -- among them, gaming, cryptocurrency mining, data centers, AI, and autonomous driving. NVIDIA has also expanded beyond its core hardware business, developing and tying software into its GPU products to offer more complete solutions to its clients.NVDA data by YChartsHowever, its share price increases have steadily outpaced its revenue growth, and the gap widened throughout 2021. NVIDIA is now nearing nine-bagger returns in just three years. As such, NVIDIA stock has been valued at a rising premium. It traded at a price-to-sales (P/S) ratio of less than 8 in 2019, but its P/S is approaching 31 today. Can the stock support this valuation?I think it's fair to argue that NVIDIA's higher valuation multiples are justified. Its revenue growth has dramatically accelerated over the past several years.NVDA PS Ratio data by YChartsHigher valuations typically are based on higher expectations from investors, so NVIDIA's business will need to support its current stock price with strong revenue and earnings growth. However, some of NVIDIA's growth in recent quarters may be related to the global chip shortage, which is pushing product prices higher as demand outstrips supply. In November, PC Magazine reported that the retail price of NVIDIA's RTX 3070 GPU rose 32% over the course of a year, from $569 to $749.Such increases would undoubtedly help boost revenue growth, but selling more units is likely a more sustainable way for the company to boost its top line. When chipmakers bring more manufacturing capacity online, a return to more competitive pricing would naturally slow down the revenue growth unless the higher number of GPUs sold makes up the difference.More potential downside than upsideInvestors must consider both the potential upsides and downsides of a stock when making buying decisions. Nobody can be sure what the future will hold for NVIDIA, especially in the face of today's inflation and supply chain challenges. While NVIDIA supplies industries that could continue growing, its own revenue growth might slow, especially given the business world's version of \"the law of large numbers,\" which explains that the bigger a company grows, the harder it is to grow at rapid percentage rates. NVIDIA could finish its fiscal 2021 with more than $26 billion in revenue, and it sports a massive $735 billion market cap.Analysts seem to be factoring these concerns into their revenue estimates for the chipmaker. The consensus estimate is for 18% revenue growth in fiscal 2022 to $31.5 billion and 16.5% growth in fiscal 2023 to $36.7 billion. Those would be serious slowdowns compared to its gains in recent years. If that scenario plays out, investors would likely find it difficult to justify the stock's elevated valuation, and we could see its price fall. Again, there is much to like about NVIDIA's long-term growth prospects, but investors might want to pump the brakes a bit. He reasoned that the monster returns generated by a few investments would more than make up for any losses.

To that end, I wouldn't be surprised to see Upstart's market cap climb from $9 billion today to $36 billion in 10 years' time. Thatâs the question for retail dip-buyers who keep hurling fresh cash at increasingly turbulent Nasdaq stocks.

Investors emboldened by a strategy that worked all of last year plowed more than $1 billion into tech in recent days, with nearly every other sector also getting deposits. JPMorgan Chase & Co. said it saw the strongest retail flows on record, with at-home traders adding $5.9 billion to equities in the week through Tuesday.

But now that gumption is being tested as the earnings season kicks off and investors get set for a Federal Reserve tightening cycle that has the market on edge. The CBOE NDX Volatility Index held above 25 for a second straight week, something itâs done only 12% of the time in the last nine months. At Fridayâs close, the Nasdaq Composite Index sat 7% below its all-time high hit in November.

âThereâs fear,â said Dave Ellison, portfolio manager of the Hennessy Large Cap Financial fund. âItâs not fear about the economy. Just last week investors were penciling in only three hikes for the year.

It doesnât help that tech is also is also losing its edge when it comes to earnings. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 closed unchanged as prints for retail sales, consumer sentiment and factory output all disappointed. Losses for the week added up to 0.3%, and the index hasnât yet been able to notch a weekly gain this year.

âChances are that weâll start to get potentially bigger swings because we do have some support coming out of the market with the Fed shift,â said Barry Gilbert, asset allocation strategist at LPL Financial. âSome of the buying points might be a little bit lower, might be a little bit more delayed.â

Investors will have their resolve tested should declines become more frequent.
