pretty vulnerable right now.","content":"

Things turned out pretty well for my "three stocks to avoid" column last week. The three stocks I thought were going to lose to the market for the week -- Tesla Motors, Bath & Body Works, and AMTD Digital -- fell 1%, 3%, and 11%, respectively, averaging out to a 5% decline.

The S&P 500 experienced a 1.2% move lower. I was right. I have now been correct in 29 of the past 44 weeks, or nearly two-thirds of the time.

Now let's look at the week ahead. I see Baozun, La-Z-Boy, and Bed Bath & Beyond as stocks you may want to consider steering clear of this week. Let's go over my near-term concerns with all three investments.

1. Baozun

Providing e-commerce solutions in China for global brands isn't as juicy a business model for Baozun as it seemed a few years ago. China's been making enemies overseas, and the economy itself in the world's most populous nation is slowing. It reports fresh financials on Tuesday morning, and it's OK to be concerned.

Analysts see Baozun's revenue clocking in 19% lower for this week's second quarter than it did a year earlier. It sees a 71% plunge in earnings per share. Momentum hasn't been kind, as Baozun has fallen short of analyst expectations in two of the last three quarters. The stock did shoot higher last time out, but that was with just a 2% decline in revenue. The market was hopeful that Baozun's business shifting from first-party sales to higher-margin services and third-party sales would help improve its margins, but we're clearly seeing the bottom line going the wrong way.

2. La-Z-Boy

It's not just La-Z-Boy's signature chair that's reclining these days. The furniture maker is another company likely to see its business decline later this year. La-Z-Boy is expected to post its fifth consecutive quarter of double-digit percentage growth on the top line later this week, but analysts see the trend reversing as the fiscal year plays out.

We've already seen manufacturers and retailers of home furnishings stumble this earnings season. Folks that loaded up on making their homes more comfortable in 2020 and 2021 have moved on in this inflationary environment. They were spending money on experiences outside of the home, and now they're just earmarking more money to pay for food. La-Z-Boy can't party like it's 2021 anymore.

3. Bed Bath & Beyond

Shares of the home goods retailer plummeted 40% on Friday after a prolific meme stock investor cashed out of his position. With a major backer gone, Bed Bath & Beyond is going to have to rest on its fundamentals -- and that's not very encouraging.

Bed Bath & Beyond has rattled off four consecutive quarters of year-over-year revenue declines of at least 20%. This will be its fifth straight year of losses. This is not a sustainable business without the hype that Ryan Cohen brought to the table setting, and even after a 40% haircut, the shares are highly problematic at this point.

It's going to be a bumpy road for some of these investments. If you're looking for safe stocks, you aren't likely to find them in Baozun, La-Z-Boy, and Bed Bath & Beyond this week.

","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
3 Stocks to Avoid This Week
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n3 Stocks to Avoid This Week\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-08-23 12:02 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Things turned out pretty well for my \"three stocks to avoid\" column last week. pretty vulnerable right now.","content":"

Wall Street will be closed on Monday, with markets observing Juneteenth for the first time.

Last week, the S&P 500 logged its worst weekly performance since March 2020, losing 5.8% after falling into a bear market on Monday. This decline also marked the benchmark index's 10th loss in the last 11 weeks.

The U.S. central bank on Wednesday raised its benchmark interest rate by 75 basis points, the largest increase in nearly three decades. Fed Chair Jerome Powell also hinted at more aggressive tightening ahead as policymakers ratchet up their fight against inflation.

On Wall Street, the move spurred a wave of recession calls and sent markets into disarray.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down nearly 5% for the week, briefly slipping below the 30,000 level. The Nasdaq pared some losses to close higher Friday but still rounded the week out in the red, down roughly 1.7%. On Saturday, the price of bitcoin (BTC-USD) dropped below $18,000 for the first time since 2020 as risk assets continue to face pressure.

"The main take-away for investors is that inflation has the Fed’s attention and that they are taking it very seriously," Independent Advisor Alliance Chief Investment Officer Chris Zaccarelli said. "Despite the fact that higher interest rates – all things being equal – are bad for risk assets, it is more important to get inflation under control and the rapid (and flexible) change from 0.5% up to 0.75% on very short notice, showed a new willingness to fight inflation with actions rather than words."

While the Fed's unprecedented action Wednesday reiterated its commitment to normalizing price levels, investors and economists fear this also increased the risk its inflation-fighting measures may tip the economy into a recession.

“Our worst fears around the Fed have been confirmed: they fell way behind the curve and are now playing a dangerous game of catch up,” analysts at Bank of America said in a note Friday. The firm slashed its GDP growth forecast to almost zero and sees a 40% chance of a recession next year.

“In the spring of 2021 we argued that the biggest risk to the US economy was a boom-bust scenario,” the bank’s research team noted. “Over time the boom-bust scenario has become our baseline forecast.”

Meanwhile, at JPMorgan, analysts warned the S&P 500's decline implies an 85% chance of recession.

All eyes will remain Powell in the coming week, with the Fed chair set to testify before the U.S. Senate Banking Committee Wednesday morning.

The Fed chief has remained adamant that the U.S. economy can avoid an economic slowdown, even as market participants lose confidence at the prospect of a “soft landing” – a period when economic growth is slowed just enough to quell inflation but without spurring economic downturn.

“We’re not trying to induce a recession now, let’s be clear about that,” Powell told reporters Wednesday. In remarks at a conference in Washington on Friday, Powell also doubled down on the central bank’s goal to rein in soaring price levels.

“My colleagues and I are acutely focused on returning inflation to our 2% objective,” he said. “The Federal Reserve’s strong commitment to our price-stability mandate contributes to the widespread confidence in the dollar as a store of value.”

Powell’s optimism does not appear to be shared by Wall Street or business leaders.

A survey released by the Conference Board found that 60% of chief executive officers and other C-suite leaders across the globe believe their geographic region will enter a recession by the end of 2023. Some 15% of CEOs say they believe their region has already entered recession.

Models from Bloomberg Economics suggest the risk of a recession has soared to more than 70%.

Another key sentiment gauge is set for release in the week ahead. Wall Street will be closed on Monday, with markets observing Juneteenth for the first time.Last week, the S&P 500 logged its worst weekly performance since March 2020, losing 5.8% after falling into a bear market on Monday. On Saturday, the price of bitcoin (BTC-USD) dropped below $18,000 for the first time since 2020 as risk assets continue to face pressure.\"The main take-away for investors is that inflation has the Fed’s attention and that they are taking it very seriously,\" Independent Advisor Alliance Chief Investment Officer Chris Zaccarelli said. \"Despite the fact that higher interest rates – all things being equal – are bad for risk assets, it is more important to get inflation under control and the rapid (and flexible) change from 0.5% up to 0.75% on very short notice, showed a new willingness to fight inflation with actions rather than words.\"While the Fed's unprecedented action Wednesday reiterated its commitment to normalizing price levels, investors and economists fear this also increased the risk its inflation-fighting measures may tip the economy into a recession.“Our worst fears around the Fed have been confirmed: they fell way behind the curve and are now playing a dangerous game of catch up,” analysts at Bank of America said in a note Friday. The firm slashed its GDP growth forecast to almost zero and sees a 40% chance of a recession next year.“In the spring of 2021 we argued that the biggest risk to the US economy was a boom-bust scenario,” the bank’s research team noted. “Over time the boom-bust scenario has become our baseline forecast.”Meanwhile, at JPMorgan, analysts warned the S&P 500's decline implies an 85% chance of recession. All eyes will remain Powell in the coming week, with the Fed chair set to testify before the U.S. Senate Banking Committee Wednesday morning. The Fed chief has remained adamant that the U.S. economy can avoid an economic slowdown, even as market participants lose confidence at the prospect of a “soft landing” – a period when economic growth is slowed just enough to quell inflation but without spurring economic downturn.“We’re not trying to induce a recession now, let’s be clear about that,” Powell told reporters Wednesday. In remarks at a conference in Washington on Friday, Powell also doubled down on the central bank’s goal to rein in soaring price levels.“My colleagues and I are acutely focused on returning inflation to our 2% objective,” he said. “The Federal Reserve’s strong commitment to our price-stability mandate contributes to the widespread confidence in the dollar as a store of value.”Powell’s optimism does not appear to be shared by Wall Street or business leaders.A survey released by the Conference Board found that 60% of chief executive officers and other C-suite leaders across the globe believe their geographic region will enter a recession by the end of 2023. Some 15% of CEOs say they believe their region has already entered recession.Models from Bloomberg Economics suggest the risk of a recession has soared to more than 70%.Another key sentiment gauge is set for release in the week ahead. The University of Michigan is scheduled to publish the final read on its sentiment index for June; the survey's initial reading for June fell to the lowest on record as inflation weighs on consumers.Corporate earnings will be light during the week, with Lennar Corporation (LEN), Rite Aid Corporation (RAD), and FedEx Corporation (FDX) set to report quarterly results.—Economic There's a lesson in there about bear markets, recessions, and all the fears gripping investors right now.

After the stock market's tumble this past week, investors probably feel like Warriors star Stephen Curry in 2020 asking what else could possibly go wrong. The S&P 500 dropped 5.8%, its worst weekly decline since March 2020, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the Nasdaq Composite both fell 4.8%.

It was "the worst stretch of selling in the history of the S&P 500," according to Sundial Capital Research's Jason Goepfert, who noted that there were five days since June 8 when more than 90% of the index's stocks finished lower. The question now is how much more can go wrong.

Plenty. The week's drop, which sent the S&P 500 into a bear market, was caused by rising bond yields, some weak economic data, and, of course, the Federal Reserve, which raised interest rates by three-quarters of a point for the first time since 1994.

And there's more where that came from. The Fed, battling inflation unlike any it has seen in the past 40 years, could raise interest rates higher than currently expected -- there's a 89% chance of another three-quarter-point increase in July, although the chances of that happening in September are much lower -- while signs of an economic slowdown emerged this past week as housing starts fell 14% month over month in May and retail sales dipped 0.3%.

"The Fed needs to bring inflation down, and the growth rate of the economy will be a victim," says Dave Donabedian, chief investment officer at CIBC Private Wealth US.

That's scary enough, but the biggest near-term concern for the stock market might be earnings. Right now, they're expected to be quite good, with analysts forecasting 11% growth to $228 per share in 2022, and 9.6% growth to nearly $250 in 2023.

But Wells Fargo strategist Chris Harvey expects companies to sound far more worried on their next conference calls in the kind of abrupt pivot that hasn't occurred since 2007.

"Overall, we think the market has quickly shifted from fears of undersupply to oversupply, and corporate outlooks will shift dramatically as earnings are revealed," explains Harvey, who recommends avoiding "broken stories," stocks that include Walt Disney (ticker: DIS), Etsy $(ETSY)$, Netflix $(NFLX)$, and Boeing $(BA)$.

If he's right, earnings forecasts will have to come down -- and the S&P 500, which trades at 15.4 times 12-month forward earnings, isn't nearly as cheap as it looks. Goldman Sachs' David Kostin notes that if S&P 500 companies earn $239 and trade at 17 times, the index would trade at 4165, up 13% from Friday's close. That's the optimistic case.

But if 2023 earnings come in lower -- say, at $225 -- and the price/earnings ratio slips to 14, the index could trade down to 3150, off 14% from Friday's close. "Investors looking for value opportunities should consider both valuations and potential downside risk to earnings estimates," he writes.

Still, it isn't the end of the world. Jim Stack, president of InvesTech Research, took equity exposure down to 44% this past week, his most defensive portfolio since the tech bubble in 2000. He doesn't sound down about it. Instead, he's looking ahead. "The 'good news' is that this will ultimately lead to one of the best buying opportunities in decades, " he writes. "But for now, patience is paramount."

It may take time, but the market will get that winning feeling once again. Bet on it.

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
The Stock Market Had a Very Bad Week. That's the optimistic case.But if 2023 earnings come in lower -- say, at $225 -- and the price/earnings ratio slips to 14, the index could trade down to 3150, off 14% from Friday's close. \"Investors looking for value opportunities should consider both valuations and potential downside risk to earnings estimates,\" he writes.Still, it isn't the end of the world. Jim Stack, president of InvesTech Research, took equity exposure down to 44% this past week, his most defensive portfolio since the tech bubble in 2000. He doesn't sound down about it. Instead, he's looking ahead. \"The 'good news' is that this will ultimately lead to one of the best buying opportunities in decades, \" he writes. \"But for now, patience is paramount.\"It may take time, but the market will get that winning feeling once again. Bet on it.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":101,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9054467350,"gmtCreate":1655424102770,"gmtModify":1676535634948,"author":{"id":"3577537481537269","authorId":"3577537481537269","name":"SirYang","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/616db5d0acda34c269c130fa9deefe88","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3577537481537269","authorIdStr":"3577537481537269"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Vanguard S&P 500 ETF(VOO)$.","listText":"$Vanguard S&P 500 ETF(VOO)$.","text":"$Vanguard S&P 500 ETF(VOO)$.","images":[{"img":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/a82a19945143c03256de9357e650a7e4","width":"1080","height":"3215"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9054467350","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":56,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9055899230,"gmtCreate":1655254416920,"gmtModify":1676535596353,"author":{"id":"3577537481537269","authorId":"3577537481537269","name":"SirYang","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/616db5d0acda34c269c130fa9deefe88","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3577537481537269","authorIdStr":"3577537481537269"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Vanguard S&P 500 ETF(VOO)$.","listText":"$Vanguard S&P 500 ETF(VOO)$.","text":"$Vanguard S&P 500 ETF(VOO)$.","images":[{"img":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/d91b83751d30ed967ef35d65226921cd","width":"1080","height":"3215"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9055899230","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":89,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"lives":[]}
