(NIO), like many other automakers, was forced to halt production this year due to the global semiconductor shortage. Semiconductor chips, widely used in smartphones, computers, and other electronic devices, are especially important to NIO, a maker of premium electric vehicles (EVs). NIO's production stoppage in late March had little impact on the company's record vehicle deliveries in Q1, but it could affect future production numbers.
\n
Investors will focus on how these forces affect NIO's immediate results, as well as its financial outlook, when the company reports earnings on April 29, 2021 for Q1 FY 2021.Analysts are expecting the company's loss per American depositary share (ADS) to narrow significantly as revenue expands at a rapid pace.
\n
Vehicle deliveries are another key metric investors watch in order to gauge the company's productive capacity. NIO already reported vehicle deliveries for the first quarter earlier this month, achieving a new quarterly record despite total deliveries coming in slightly below expectations.
\n
Shares of NIO have dramatically outperformed the broader market over the past year. But after reaching all-time highs earlier this year, the stock has fallen considerably and has been trading mostly sideways since early March. NIO's shares have provided investors with an astronomic total return of 1,171.9% over the past year, well above the S&P 500's total return of 45.5%.
\n
Source: TradingView.
\n
NIO Earnings History
\n
The stock, which had been gathering downward momentum after peaking around mid-February, plunged following NIO's Q4 FY 2020 earnings report released at the beginning of March. The company reported a much larger loss per ADS than analysts expected and revenue also missed estimates. However, NIO's loss narrowed considerably compared to the year-ago quarter and revenue was still up 133.2%.The company was optimistic about its performance, noting that its gross margin rose to 17.2% compared to negative 8.9% in the year-ago quarter.
\n
In Q3 FY 2020, NIO posted a loss per ADS of 0.98 yuan ($0.15 as of the CNY/USD exchange rate on April 27, 2021).It was the smallest loss in at least 11 quarters. Revenue rose 146.4%, maintaining the pace of growth achieved in the second quarter.NIO said it delivered a record number of vehicles and saw improvements in its average selling price. The company also said that it was the second straight quarter of positive cash flow from operating activities.
\n
Analysts expect continued improvement in NIO's financial results in Q1 FY 2021. While NIO is still expected to post another loss per ADS, it is estimated to be the lowest in at least 14 quarters. Revenue for the quarter is forecast to rise 446.1%, which would be the fastest pace since Q2 FY 2019. For full-year FY 2021, analysts are currently expecting NIO to achieve a loss of 2.72 yuan per ADS, which would be the smallest loss in at least five years. Revenue is expected to rise 109.7%, a faster pace than in each of the last two years.
\n
Source: Visible Alpha; NIO Inc.
\n
The Key Metric
\n
As mentioned above, investors are also watching the number of vehicles NIO delivers each quarter. NIO generates some revenue from various services it provides, but the majority of revenue is derived from vehicle sales.Currently, the company makes deliveries of three types of vehicles: the ES8, the company's 6-seater and 7-seater flagship premium smart electric SUV; the ES6, the company’s 5-seater high-performance premium smart electric SUV; and the EC6, the company’s 5-seater premium electric coupe SUV.The number of vehicle deliveries provides an indication of the demand for NIO's vehicles as well as the company's ability to scale production.
\n
NIO has significantly ramped up its production over the past few years. The company delivered 11,350 vehicles in FY 2018. In FY 2020, it had nearly quadrupled that figure, delivering 43,730 vehicles. Despite a slowdown in Q1 FY 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic, NIO quickly made up for the Q1 drop in deliveries with a 190.8% year-over-year increase in Q2 FY 2020. Total vehicle delivery growth decelerated to 154.3% in Q3 and then to 111.0% in Q4. However, vehicle deliveries rose 423.0% in Q1 FY 2021, hitting a new quarterly record, as mentioned above. For full-year FY 2021, analysts are forecasting NIO to deliver 88,280 vehicles, which would be more than double last year's total deliveries. However, NIO warned investors in early March that the global chip shortage is likely to cut its production capacity, at least in the second quarter.
","source":"lsy1606203311635","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
NIO Q1 2021 Earnings Report Preview: What to Look For
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nNIO Q1 2021 Earnings Report Preview: What to Look For\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-04-29 11:08 GMT+8 InvestoPedia\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Focus on NIO vehicle deliveries\nKEY TAKEAWAYS\n\nAnalysts estimate earnings per ADS of -0.72 yuan vs. -1.66 yuan in Q1 FY 2020.\nVehicle deliveries, already announced, rose dramatically YOY.\nRevenue is ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"NIO":"蔚来"},"source_url":"https://www.investopedia.com/nio-q1-2021-earnings-report-preview-5180991","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1183966356","content_text":"Focus on NIO vehicle deliveries\nKEY TAKEAWAYS\n\nAnalysts estimate earnings per ADS of -0.72 yuan vs. -1.66 yuan in Q1 FY 2020.\nVehicle deliveries, already announced, rose dramatically YOY.\nRevenue is expected to soar on expanding vehicle sales.\n\nNIO Inc. NIO's production stoppage in late March had little impact on the company's record vehicle deliveries in Q1, but it could affect future production numbers.\nInvestors will focus on how these forces affect NIO's immediate results, as well as its financial outlook, when the company reports earnings on April 29, 2021 for Q1 FY 2021.Analysts are expecting the company's loss per American depositary share (ADS) to narrow significantly as revenue expands at a rapid pace.\nVehicle deliveries are another key metric investors watch in order to gauge the company's productive capacity. NIO already reported vehicle deliveries for the first quarter earlier this month, achieving a new quarterly record despite total deliveries coming in slightly below expectations.\nShares of NIO have dramatically outperformed the broader market over the past year. But after reaching all-time highs earlier this year, the stock has fallen considerably and has been trading mostly sideways since early March. NIO's shares have provided investors with an astronomic total return of 1,171.9% over the past year, well above the S&P 500's total return of 45.5%.\nSource: TradingView.\nNIO Earnings History\nThe stock, which had been gathering downward momentum after peaking around mid-February, plunged following NIO's Q4 FY 2020 earnings report released at the beginning of March. The company reported a much larger loss per ADS than analysts expected and revenue also missed estimates. However, NIO's loss narrowed considerably compared to the year-ago quarter and revenue was still up 133.2%.The company was optimistic about its performance, noting that its gross margin rose to 17.2% compared to negative 8.9% in the year-ago quarter.\nIn Q3 FY 2020, NIO posted a loss per ADS of 0.98 yuan ($0.15 as of the CNY/USD exchange rate on April 27, 2021).It was the smallest loss in at least 11 quarters. Revenue rose 146.4%, maintaining the pace of growth achieved in the second quarter.NIO said it delivered a record number of vehicles and saw improvements in its average selling price. The company also said that it was the second straight quarter of positive cash flow from operating activities.\nAnalysts expect continued improvement in NIO's financial results in Q1 FY 2021. Revenue is expected to rise 109.7%, a faster pace than in each of the last two years.\nSource: Visible Alpha; NIO Inc.\nThe Key Metric\nAs mentioned above, investors are also watching the number of vehicles NIO delivers each quarter. NIO generates some revenue from various services it provides, but the majority of revenue is derived from vehicle sales.Currently, the company makes deliveries of three types of vehicles: the ES8, the company's 6-seater and 7-seater flagship premium smart electric SUV; the ES6, the company’s 5-seater high-performance premium smart electric SUV; and the EC6, the company’s 5-seater premium electric coupe SUV.The number of vehicle deliveries provides an indication of the demand for NIO's vehicles as well as the company's ability to scale production.\nNIO has significantly ramped up its production over the past few years. However, NIO warned investors in early March that the global chip shortage is likely to cut its production capacity, at least in the second quarter.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":268,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":100347337,"gmtCreate":1619584656129,"gmtModify":1704726365080,"author":{"id":"3577585319193105","authorId":"3577585319193105","name":"AlexCP","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4675b625a128097d1dba0b56cfafb1d6","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3577585319193105","authorIdStr":"3577585319193105"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Gooooooo","listText":"Gooooooo","text":"Gooooooo","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":2,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/100347337","repostId":"1124091974","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1124091974","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Providing stock market headlines, business news, financials and earnings ","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Tiger Newspress","id":"1079075236","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8274c5b9d4c2852bfb1c4d6ce16c68ba"},"pubTimestamp":1619567579,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1124091974?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-04-28 07:52","market":"us","language":"en","title":"S&P 500 closes flat near a record high ahead","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1124091974","media":"Tiger Newspress","summary":"The S&P 500 closed little changed near its record level on Tuesday as investors braced for a big bat","content":"
The S&P 500 closed little changed near its record level on Tuesday as investors braced for a big batch of tech earnings.

The broad equity benchmark ended the day less than 0.1% lower at 4,186.72 after hitting a record high in the previous session. The FTSE Environmental Opportunities Asia Pacific Index is lagging the broader MSCI Asia Pacific Index by more than six percentage points in 2021.“Given the pull back in the sector over the first quarter, this presents an interesting opportunity as stocks are down at the same time that macro conditions are becoming more supportive,” said Edward Lees, a portfolio manager at BNP Paribas. “When looked at alongside the other global announcements we had over Earth Day, that the structural trend of greening economies remains intact.”The euphoria surrounding green stocks after Biden’s election gave way earlier this year to concerns about excessive valuations and a general rethink of the so-called reflation trade, of which they were a key constituent. Now, with nations once again pledging to tackle climate change and attempting to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement, there appears to be renewed interest among investors.Renewable AsiaAsia’s climate plays tend to focus on the renewable energy supply chain, from utilities to decarbonization technology providers -- as well as e-mobility suppliers including battery and automakers -- with a majority of stocks listed in China, Japan and Korea. The initial effect of the summit was positive. Chinese names tied to solar and wind energy rose on Friday while those of coal miners dropped, as President Xi Jinping reiterated the nation’s goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2060 and pledged to reduce coal consumption from 2026. But some of those shares have given up their gains amid a weak start to this week in the broader Chinese market. In Japan, stocks including energy saving services provider SDS Holdings Co. and eRex Co., which produces electric power from biomass, gained after the nation announced its aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 46% by 2030 from 2013 levels.Investors seem particularly enthusiastic about Asia’s solar stocks, a market dominated by Chinese manufacturers such as LONGi Green Energy Technology Co. and U.S.-listed JinkoSolar Holding Co., according to BloombergNEF.Players such as Xinyi Solar Holdings Ltd. and Flat Glass Group Co. will “continue to gain market share” because of their technological advantages and lower production costs, said Ken Xu, chief investment officer at Strategic Vision Investment Ltd.Looking AheadThe next major catalyst for green investors is likely to be the COP26 conference in Glasgow, which is expected to start in November.“We might expect more ambitious emissions-reduction targets to be announced by countries that did not do so during this climate summit,” said Jennifer Boscardin-Ching, a client portfolio manager at Pictet. Financial Report 2020
\n
Net sales from various products are as follows: Vehicle (93.4%), Energy Package, Service Package and Other Embedded Services (6.6%).
\n
FY2020 Analysis
\n
NIO had an FY20 earnings beat. There is top-line growth of 172.8% with the bottom line growing by 30.2%. This is primarily due to a strong quarter 4, which benefited from the reopening of the economy in China. Q4 revenue grew 133% YoY and 47% QoQ. I also see this as a barometer of post-pandemic demand in FY21. Another positive sign is the improvement of Gross Profit Margin (GPM) to 17.2%, with the operating expense ratio (OER) narrowing to 31.2% in Q4.
\n
Outperformance in Q4 instills confidence that revenue is on track to grow by a forecasted 124.19% in 2021. In addition, the strong guidance given by senior management for Q121 was met according to the latest announcement; 20,060 vehicles delivered in the first 3 months, a 423% YoY increase.
\n
Unique Energy Solution
\n
Contrasting to Tesla(NASDAQ:TSLA), NIO believes that drivers are now ready for \"Battery-as-a-service\" and offers an electric car with a swappable battery. There are a few strategic advantages to that move.
\n
One is the lower upfront EV cost which makes it a lot more palatable for consumers to adopt NIO cars vs. conventional ones and other competitors. Secondly, battery swapping is a great avenue to retrieve data points on battery performance and user preferences, which are critical in the long run. Thirdly, it distinguishes NIO from its fiercest competitor Tesla in the luxury EV market.
\n
Not forgetting the additional revenue stream from NIO House, NIO Power and other power solutions. The increase in the proportion of \"Other Sales\" to revenue affirms that.
\n
Extension of New Energy Vehicles (NEV) Subsidy to 2022
\n
NEV subsidy has been a key driver in the adoption of electric vehicles in China. In fact, the subsidy scheme has been around since 2009. Originally slated to end in 2020, the Chinese government decided to extend it for another 2 years but with tightened qualification.
\n
EVs over CNY300,000 are eligible for subsidies only if they support battery swapping. This favours NIO as it considerably reduces the prices of NIO models.
\n
Subsidy and Baas Impact on NIO prices
\n
Source: Counterpoint Research
\n
Booming Industry
\n
China is the world's largest auto market and the pie for the EV market is huge. NIO being one of the market leaders, has a long runway to grow its business. In addition, the rising wealth and the fast-growing middle class, coupled with the dual circulation strategy will serve as a strong tailwind for the EV industry.
\n
According to the China Society of Automotive Engineers (China-SAE), Sales of NEV in China are expected to grow by 4x to 20% of overall new car sales by 2025, and to 50% by 2035. The commitment by Xi Jinping to cut greenhouse gases might potentially accelerate that growth as well.
\n
Risks
\n
Even though there are fears in the market over sudden interest rates hike by the Fed, it's extremely unlikely given the repeated commitment to hold rates till 2023. That being said, the increase in rates can be detrimental to NIO's valuation and will increase their financing cost.
\n
Continuous shortage of semiconductors has led to NIO's temporary suspension of production in March. Though this is unlikely to occur again, it remains as an overhang for the automobile industry.
\n
Worse-than-expected execution and delivery of vehicles will also be a drag to the business. I take comfort in Q1 delivery figures.
\n
Valuation
\n
There is a broad decline of EV counters in recent months due to the risk-off sentiment in the Chinese market and profit-taking after a record year. The climbing UST was also a huge downer for the equity market.
\n
However, I believe these are systematic factors, not specific to the firm. The structural story of the booming EV market remains intact. The fundamentals of NIO are still sound. As such, investors should take this opportunity to buy into weakness.
\n
Income Statement
\n
Source: Bloomberg, Proprietary Analysis
\n
Based on my forecast model, revenue is expected to grow 124% in 2021, on the back of 2.5x sales volume in 2021. GPM will improve to 18.1%, almost doubling 2020 GPM. Net Income will only improve marginally as R&D expenditure is expected to weigh down heavily on net income.
\n
Target Price Matrix
\n
Source: Bloomberg, Proprietary Analysis
\n
Current P/S at 16.6x, although lower than XPeng (XPEV) and Li Auto (LI), embedded excessive optimism in it. This favours NIO as it considerably reduces the prices of NIO models.\nSubsidy and Baas Impact on NIO prices\nSource: Counterpoint Research\nBooming Industry\nChina is the world's largest auto market and the pie for the EV market is huge. NIO being one of the market leaders, has a long runway to grow its business. In addition, the rising wealth and the fast-growing middle class, coupled with the dual circulation strategy will serve as a strong tailwind for the EV industry.\nAccording to the China Society of Automotive Engineers (China-SAE), Sales of NEV in China are expected to grow by 4x to 20% of overall new car sales by 2025, and to 50% by 2035. The commitment by Xi Jinping to cut greenhouse gases might potentially accelerate that growth as well.\nRisks\nEven though there are fears in the market over sudden interest rates hike by the Fed, it's extremely unlikely given the repeated commitment to hold rates till 2023. That being said, the increase in rates can be detrimental to NIO's valuation and will increase their financing cost.\nContinuous shortage of semiconductors has led to NIO's temporary suspension of production in March. Though this is unlikely to occur again, it remains as an overhang for the automobile industry.\nWorse-than-expected execution and delivery of vehicles will also be a drag to the business. I take comfort in Q1 delivery figures.\nValuation\nThere is a broad decline of EV counters in recent months due to the risk-off sentiment in the Chinese market and profit-taking after a record year. The climbing UST was also a huge downer for the equity market.\nHowever, I believe these are systematic factors, not specific to the firm. The structural story of the booming EV market remains intact. The fundamentals of NIO are still sound. As such, investors should take this opportunity to buy into weakness.\nIncome Statement\nSource: Bloomberg, Proprietary Analysis\nBased on my forecast model, revenue is expected to grow 124% in 2021, on the back of 2.5x sales volume in 2021. GPM will improve to 18.1%, almost doubling 2020 GPM. Net Income will only improve marginally as R&D expenditure is expected to weigh down heavily on net income.\nTarget Price Matrix\nSource: Bloomberg, Proprietary Analysis\nCurrent P/S at 16.6x, although lower than XPeng (XPEV) and Li Auto (LI), embedded excessive optimism in it. A fairer P/S ratio for NIO is 10.0x, which is 39.75% lower than the current P/S.\nUsing a P/S of 10.0x, I derive a target price of USD 51.41, which provides an upside of 25.14% return over a 12-month period.\nConclusion\nMy rating on NIO Inc. is Buy. With a current trading price of USD 41.08 and a target price of USD 51.41, the upside return is 25.14%.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":307,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":100348454,"gmtCreate":1619584310778,"gmtModify":1704726358251,"author":{"id":"3577585319193105","authorId":"3577585319193105","name":"AlexCP","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4675b625a128097d1dba0b56cfafb1d6","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3577585319193105","authorIdStr":"3577585319193105"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Gogogo","listText":"Gogogo","text":"Gogogo","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/100348454","repostId":"1119348619","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1119348619","pubTimestamp":1619580880,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1119348619?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-04-28 11:34","market":"us","language":"en","title":"6 Causes of the Global Semiconductor Shortage","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1119348619","media":"Motley Fool","summary":"The world's top chipmakers still can't manufacture chips fast enough to satisfy the market's insatia","content":"
The world's top chipmakers still can't manufacture chips fast enough to satisfy the market's insatiable appetite.
\n
The global semiconductor shortage is causing headaches for many industries. Manufacturers of PCs, mobile devices, gaming consoles, vehicles, networking devices, and industrial machines are all scrambling to buy enough chips to use in their products amid surging demand for those same products.
\n
Investors looking to navigate this situation and avoid a problematic stock trade would be smart to know what's going on. That starts with being familiar with the six root causes of this ongoing crisis.
\n
1. Intel's big mistakes
\n
Intel (NASDAQ:INTC), the world's largest manufacturer of x86 CPUs for PCs and data centers, suffered a chip shortage in 2018 after its troubled development of new 10nm chips impacted its production of 14nm chips. It hadn't resolved that shortage when it stumbled again last year by delaying the launch of its new 7nm chips. Intel's missteps caused more PC makers to buy AMD's (NASDAQ:AMD) CPUs, putting a strain on its supply.
\n
\n
Unlike Intel, which manufactures its own chips with its internal foundry, AMD outsources the production of most of its chips to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (NYSE:TSM), the world's most advanced chip foundry. As a result, AMD's growth and market share gains applied more pressure to TSMC's plants prior to the pandemic.
\n
2. Declining memory chip prices
\n
Meanwhile, memory chip prices soared in 2017 and 2018, but declined in 2019 and 2020 amid sluggish demand from the PC and smartphone markets. In response, top DRAM and NAND chipmakers -- including Samsung,SK Hynix, and Micron Technology (NASDAQ:MU)-- curbed their output before the pandemic.
\n
3. The COVID-19 crisis
\n
In short, the market was already wobbly when the pandemic started last year. However, the pandemic temporarily disrupted semiconductor shipments as global demand for new mobile devices, PCs, and data center upgrades surged in response to remote work, online learning, and other stay-at-home trends.
\n
Most chipmakers recovered from their initial disruptions, and TSMC stayed online because its most advanced plants in Taiwan weren't affected. Memory chipmakers also quickly ramped up their production again in response to that rising demand.
\n
But the chip sector still couldn't satisfy the market's appetite for new chips. TSMC's fabs have already been running at over-100% utilization over the past 12 months, and it recently announced it would spend $100 billion over the next three years to expand its operations. Intel also recently warned that the global chip shortage could last two more years and would require \"immense\" investments to resolve.
\n
4. Secular tailwinds
\n
Global demand for chips has generally been cyclical over the past few decades. However, the secular growth of new technologies -- including cloud services,5G networks, and AI services -- is feeding a \"super cycle\" of chip upgrades that could last much longer than a traditional cycle.
\n
Connected devices, such as smartphones and cars, require a growing number of chips.Skyworks Solutions (NASDAQ:SWKS), which produces wireless chips for a wide range of industries, expects each 5G smartphone to use $25 worth of front-end chips, compared to $18 per 4G devices and just $8 per 3G device.
\n
Skyworks also expects nearly three-quarters of all cars to ship with cellular connectivity by 2024. IHS and Deloitte estimate the costs of all electronic components in cars accounted for 45% of their costs in 2020, up from just 18% in 2000, and that ratio could keep rising.
\n
Many chipmakers expected this supercycle to significantly boost their sales prior to the pandemic, but the crisis accelerated many of those trends while temporarily disrupting their shipments. That pressure will likely cause the global chip shortage to drag on.
\n
5. The ongoing tech war
\n
The tech war between the U.S. and China, which intensified under President Donald Trump and is continuing under President Joe Biden, is another pressing issue. The U.S. has already levied sanctions against several big Chinese companies, including SMIC and Huawei, amid national security concerns.
\n
Those sanctions are exacerbating the shortage of advanced chips in China, but they're also spurring the Chinese government to aggressively invest in its domestic chipmakers to reduce its overall dependence on overseas technologies -- which could cause a messy decoupling of the U.S. and Chinese markets.
\n
6. More challenges ahead
\n
The Biden administration recently proposed spending $50 billion to strengthen America's chipmaking sector, but fresh cash probably won't resolve the current chip shortage.
\n
That's because most of the global semiconductor market still relies on overseas companies like the Dutch semiconductor equipment maker ASML (NASDAQ:ASML), Taiwan's TSMC, and South Korea's Samsung -- which are all arguably more important than most American chipmakers.
\n
Moreover, several recent setbacks -- including a power outage at TSMC, a production pause at Samsung, and a fire at the Japanese auto chipmaker Renesas-- all highlight the fragility of the semiconductor supply chain and its overwhelming dependence on overseas gatekeepers.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
6 Causes of the Global Semiconductor Shortage
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n6 Causes of the Global Semiconductor Shortage\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-04-28 11:34 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
The world's top chipmakers still can't manufacture chips fast enough to satisfy the market's insatiable appetite.\nThe global semiconductor shortage is causing headaches for many industries. ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"688981":"中芯国际","SSNLF":"三星电子","MU":"美光科技","INTC":"英特尔","AMD":"美国超微公司","ASML":"阿斯麦","00981":"中芯国际","TSM":"台积电"},"source_url":"https://www.fool.com/investing/2021/04/27/6-causes-of-the-global-semiconductor-shortage/","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1119348619","content_text":"The world's top chipmakers still can't manufacture chips fast enough to satisfy the market's insatiable appetite.\nThe global semiconductor shortage is causing headaches for many industries. The president addresses a joint session of Congress Wednesday evening. It’s a huge week for earnings with about a third of the S&P 500 reporting, including Big Tech names, such as Apple,Microsoft,Alphabet and Amazon. As many have already done, firms like Boeing, Ford,Caterpillar and McDonald’s, are likely to detail cost pressures they are facing from rising materials and transportation costs and supply chain disruptions. At the same time, the Fed is expected to defend its policy of letting inflation run hot, while assuring markets it sees the pick-up in prices as only temporary. The central bank meets on Tuesday and Wednesday. The central bank takes the main stage“I think the Fed would like not to be a feature next week, but the Fed will be forced from the background because of concerns about inflation,” said Diane Swonk, chief economist at Grant Thornton. The central bank is not expected to make any policy moves, but Fed Chairman Jerome Powell’s press briefing following the meeting Wednesday will be closely watched. So far, the barrage of earnings news has been positive, with 86% of companies reporting earnings beats. Corporate profits are expected to be up about 33.9% for the first quarter, based on estimates and actual reports, according to Refinitiv. Revenues are about 9.9% higher. There is important inflation data Friday when the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge is reported. The personal consumption expenditure report is expected to show a 1.8% rise in core inflation, still below the Fed’s target of 2%. Other data releases include the first-quarter gross domestic product on Thursday, which is expected to have grown by 6.5%, according to Dow Jones.“I think the Fed has no urgency to shift monetary policy at this point,” said Ian Lyngen, head of U.S. rates strategy at BMO. “The Fed needs to acknowledge that the data is improving. We had a strong first quarter.”“The Fed needs to acknowledge that but at the same time they’re keeping extremely accommodative policy in place, so they’ll have to make a note to the fact that the easy policy is warranted,” he said.Lyngen said the Fed will likely point to continued concerns about the pandemic globally as a potential risk to the economic recovery.Powell is also expected to once more explain that the Fed will let inflation rise above its 2% target for a period of time before it raises rates so that the economy can have more time to heal. “It’s going to be a challenge for the Fed,” said Swonk. The base effects for the next several months will make inflation appear to have jumped sharply because of the comparison to a weak period last year. The consumer price index for April could be above 3%, compared to 2.6% last month, Swonk added.“The Fed is trying to let a lot more people get out onto the dance floor before it calls ‘last call,’” she said. “Really what Powell has been saying since day one is if we take care of people on the margins and bring them back into the labor force, the rest will take care of itself.”Stocks were slightly lower in the past week, and Treasury yields held at lower levels. The 10-year yield, which moves opposite price, was at 1.55% Friday. The S&P 500was down 0.1%, ending the week at 4,180, while Nasdaq Composite was down nearly 0.3% at 14,016. The Dow was off just shy of 0.5% at 34,043.Tax hike prospectsStocks were hit hard on Thursday when after a news report said that Biden is expected to propose a capital gains tax rate of 39.6% for people earning more than $1 million a year.Combined with the 3.8% net investment income tax, the new levy would more than double the long term capital gains rate of 20% or the richest Americans.Strategists said Biden is expected to propose raising the income tax rate for those earning more than $400,000.“I think a lot of people are starting to price in the risk there going to be a significant increase in both corporate and capital gains taxes,” said Lyngen. So far, companies have not provided much in the way of commentary on the proposed hike in corporate taxes to 28% from 21% but they have been talking about other costs.David Bianco, chief investment strategist for the Americas at DWS, said he expects larger companies will do better dealing with supply chain constraints than smaller ones. Big Tech is also likely to fare better during the semiconductor shortage than auto makers, which have already announced production shutdowns, he said.“Next week is tech week. I think we’re going to get down on our knees and just be in awe of their business models and their ability to grow at a behemoth scale,” Bianco said.He said he’s not in favor of Wall Street’s popular trade into cyclicals and out of growth. He still favors growth.“We’re overweight equities really because we’re concerned about rising interest rates,” Bianco said. “I’m not bullish in that I expect the market to rise that much from here.”“We stuck with growth and dug deeper into bond substitutes, utilities, staples, real estate,” he said, adding he is underweight industrials, energy and materials. “Energy is doomed. It’s being nationalized via regulation. I do like industrials, they are well-run companies, but I do think infrastructure spending expectations for classic infrastructure are too high.”He also said industrials are good businesses, but the stocks have become overvalued.Bianco said he likes big box stores, but smaller retailers are facing big challenges that were already impacting them prior to Covid. He also finds small biotech firms attractive.“I like healthcare stocks. Those valuations are reasonable. People have been paranoid about politicians beating on them since 1992. They manage through it and lately they’ve been delivering,” he said.Week ahead calendarMondayEarnings:Tesla,Canadian National Railway, Canon,Check Point Software,Otis Worldwide, Vale,Ameriprise,NXP However, the drivers of the firm remain unchanged and I see this as an opportunity for investors to buy into weakness and invest in the long-term growth story of NIO and the EV industry.
\n
Company Overview
\n
NIO Inc. designs, manufactures and sells automobiles. The Company offers electric vehicles and parts, as well as provides battery charging services.
\n
Its products include the EP9 supercar, ES8 7-seater SUV, ES6 5-seater SUV, EC6 5-seater crossover SUV and the ET7 autonomous sedan. Of which, the ES6 is the best-seller, followed by the EC6. The company also provides users with home charging (Nio House), and power express valet service (Nio Power) and other power solutions including access to public charging, access to power mobile charging trucks, and battery swapping. It also offers other value-added services such as service package, battery payment arrangement, and vehicle financing and license plate registration.
\n
Net sales are distributed geographically as follows: China (100%).
\n
Net Sales by Category of Products Breakdown
\n
Source: Nio Inc.
\n
Valuation
\n
There is a broad decline of EV counters in recent months due to the risk-off sentiment in the Chinese market and profit-taking after a record year. However, the drivers of the firm remain unchanged and I see this as an opportunity for investors to buy into weakness and invest in the long-term growth story of NIO and the EV industry.\nCompany Overview\nNIO Inc. designs, manufactures and sells automobiles. The Company offers electric vehicles and parts, as well as provides battery charging services.\nIts products include the EP9 supercar, ES8 7-seater SUV, ES6 5-seater SUV, EC6 5-seater crossover SUV and the ET7 autonomous sedan. Of which, the ES6 is the best-seller, followed by the EC6. The company also provides users with home charging (Nio House), and power express valet service (Nio Power) and other power solutions including access to public charging, access to power mobile charging trucks, and battery swapping. It also offers other value-added services such as service package, battery payment arrangement, and vehicle financing and license plate registration.\nNet sales are distributed geographically as follows: China (100%).\nNet Sales by Category of Products Breakdown\nSource: Nio Inc. Financial Report 2020\nNet sales from various products are as follows: Vehicle (93.4%), Energy Package, Service Package and Other Embedded Services (6.6%).\nFY2020 Analysis\nNIO had an FY20 earnings beat. There is top-line growth of 172.8% with the bottom line growing by 30.2%. This is primarily due to a strong quarter 4, which benefited from the reopening of the economy in China. Q4 revenue grew 133% YoY and 47% QoQ. I also see this as a barometer of post-pandemic demand in FY21. Another positive sign is the improvement of Gross Profit Margin (GPM) to 17.2%, with the operating expense ratio (OER) narrowing to 31.2% in Q4.\nOutperformance in Q4 instills confidence that revenue is on track to grow by a forecasted 124.19% in 2021. In addition, the strong guidance given by senior management for Q121 was met according to the latest announcement; 20,060 vehicles delivered in the first 3 months, a 423% YoY increase.\nUnique Energy Solution\nContrasting to Tesla(NASDAQ:TSLA), NIO believes that drivers are now ready for \"Battery-as-a-service\" and offers an electric car with a swappable battery. There are a few strategic advantages to that move.\nOne is the lower upfront EV cost which makes it a lot more palatable for consumers to adopt NIO cars vs. conventional ones and other competitors. Secondly, battery swapping is a great avenue to retrieve data points on battery performance and user preferences, which are critical in the long run. Thirdly, it distinguishes NIO from its fiercest competitor Tesla in the luxury EV market.\nNot forgetting the additional revenue stream from NIO House, NIO Power and other power solutions. The increase in the proportion of \"Other Sales\" to revenue affirms that.\nExtension of New Energy Vehicles (NEV) Subsidy to 2022\nNEV subsidy has been a key driver in the adoption of electric vehicles in China. In fact, the subsidy scheme has been around since 2009. Originally slated to end in 2020, the Chinese government decided to extend it for another 2 years but with tightened qualification.\nEVs over CNY300,000 are eligible for subsidies only if they support battery swapping. This favours NIO as it considerably reduces the prices of NIO models.\nSubsidy and Baas Impact on NIO prices\nSource: Counterpoint Research\nBooming Industry\nChina is the world's largest auto market and the pie for the EV market is huge. NIO being one of the market leaders, has a long runway to grow its business. In addition, the rising wealth and the fast-growing middle class, coupled with the dual circulation strategy will serve as a strong tailwind for the EV industry.\nAccording to the China Society of Automotive Engineers (China-SAE), Sales of NEV in China are expected to grow by 4x to 20% of overall new car sales by 2025, and to 50% by 2035. The commitment by Xi Jinping to cut greenhouse gases might potentially accelerate that growth as well.\nRisks\nEven though there are fears in the market over sudden interest rates hike by the Fed, it's extremely unlikely given the repeated commitment to hold rates till 2023. That being said, the increase in rates can be detrimental to NIO's valuation and will increase their financing cost.\nContinuous shortage of semiconductors has led to NIO's temporary suspension of production in March. Though this is unlikely to occur again, it remains as an overhang for the automobile industry.\nWorse-than-expected execution and delivery of vehicles will also be a drag to the business. I take comfort in Q1 delivery figures.\nValuation\nThere is a broad decline of EV counters in recent months due to the risk-off sentiment in the Chinese market and profit-taking after a record year. The climbing UST was also a huge downer for the equity market.\nHowever, I believe these are systematic factors, not specific to the firm. The structural story of the booming EV market remains intact. The fundamentals of NIO are still sound. As such, investors should take this opportunity to buy into weakness.\nIncome Statement\nSource: Bloomberg, Proprietary Analysis\nBased on my forecast model, revenue is expected to grow 124% in 2021, on the back of 2.5x sales volume in 2021. GPM will improve to 18.1%, almost doubling 2020 GPM. Net Income will only improve marginally as R&D expenditure is expected to weigh down heavily on net income.\nTarget Price Matrix\nSource: Bloomberg, Proprietary Analysis\nCurrent P/S at 16.6x, although lower than XPeng (XPEV) and Li Auto (LI), embedded excessive optimism in it. A fairer P/S ratio for NIO is 10.0x, which is 39.75% lower than the current P/S.\nUsing a P/S of 10.0x, I derive a target price of USD 51.41, which provides an upside of 25.14% return over a 12-month period.\nConclusion\nMy rating on NIO Inc. is Buy. POINTSThe last week of April will be extremely busy for markets with a third of the S&P 500 reporting earnings, a Federal Reserve meeting, and new spending and tax proposals from the White House.Big Tech is a highlight of the earnings calendar, with Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook and Alphabet all releasing results.The Fed is not expected to take any action, but economists expect it to defend its policy to let inflation run hot.There is some key data including first-quarter gross domestic product and the Fed’s favorite inflation measure: the personal consumption expenditures deflator.The final week of April is going to be a busy one for markets with a Federal Reserve meeting and a deluge of earnings news.Hot topics in markets will continue to be inflation and taxes.President Joe Biden is expected to detail his “American Families Plan” and the tax increases to pay for it, including a much higher capital gains tax for the wealthy.The plan is the second part of his Build Back Better agenda and will include new spending proposals aimed at helping families. The president addresses a joint session of Congress Wednesday evening.It’s a huge week for earnings with about a third of the S&P 500 reporting, including Big Tech names, such as Apple,Microsoft,Alphabet and Amazon.As many have already done, firms like Boeing, Ford,Caterpillar and McDonald’s, are likely to detail cost pressures they are facing from rising materials and transportation costs and supply chain disruptions.At the same time, the Fed is expected to defend its policy of letting inflation run hot, while assuring markets it sees the pick-up in prices as only temporary. The central bank meets on Tuesday and Wednesday.The central bank takes the main stage“I think the Fed would like not to be a feature next week, but the Fed will be forced from the background because of concerns about inflation,” said Diane Swonk, chief economist at Grant Thornton.The central bank is not expected to make any policy moves, but Fed Chairman Jerome Powell’s press briefing following the meeting Wednesday will be closely watched.So far, the barrage of earnings news has been positive, with 86% of companies reporting earnings beats. Corporate profits are expected to be up about 33.9% for the first quarter, based on estimates and actual reports, according to Refinitiv. Revenues are about 9.9% higher.There is important inflation data Friday when the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge is reported.The personal consumption expenditure report is expected to show a 1.8% rise in core inflation, still below the Fed’s target of 2%. Other data releases include the first-quarter gross domestic product on Thursday, which is expected to have grown by 6.5%, according to Dow Jones.“I think the Fed has no urgency to shift monetary policy at this point,” said Ian Lyngen, head of U.S. rates strategy at BMO. “The Fed needs to acknowledge that the data is improving. We had a strong first quarter.”“The Fed needs to acknowledge that but at the same time they’re keeping extremely accommodative policy in place, so they’ll have to make a note to the fact that the easy policy is warranted,” he said.Lyngen said the Fed will likely point to continued concerns about the pandemic globally as a potential risk to the economic recovery.Powell is also expected to once more explain that the Fed will let inflation rise above its 2% target for a period of time before it raises rates so that the economy can have more time to heal. “It’s going to be a challenge for the Fed,” said Swonk.The base effects for the next several months will make inflation appear to have jumped sharply because of the comparison to a weak period last year. The consumer price index for April could be above 3%, compared to 2.6% last month, Swonk added.“The Fed is trying to let a lot more people get out onto the dance floor before it calls ‘last call,’” she said. “Really what Powell has been saying since day one is if we take care of people on the margins and bring them back into the labor force, the rest will take care of itself.”Stocks were slightly lower in the past week, and Treasury yields held at lower levels. The 10-year yield,which moves opposite price, was at 1.55% Friday.The S&P 500was down 0.1%, ending the week at 4,180, while Nasdaq Composite was down nearly 0.3% at 14,016. The Dow was off just shy of 0.5% at 34,043.Tax hike prospectsStocks were hit hard on Thursday when after a news report said that Biden is expected to propose a capital gains tax rate of 39.6% for people earning more than $1 million a year.Combined with the 3.8% net investment income tax, the new levy would more than double the long term capital gains rate of 20% or the richest Americans.Strategists said Biden is expected to propose raising the income tax rate for those earning more than $400,000.“I think a lot of people are starting to price in the risk there going to be a significant increase in both corporate and capital gains taxes,” said Lyngen.So far, companies have not provided much in the way of commentary on the proposed hike in corporate taxes to 28% from 21% but they have been talking about other costs.David Bianco, chief investment strategist for the Americas at DWS, said he expects larger companies will do better dealing with supply chain constraints than smaller ones. Big Tech is also likely to fare better during the semiconductor shortage than auto makers, which have already announced production shutdowns, he said.“Next week is tech week. I think we’re going to get down on our knees and just be in awe of their business models and their ability to grow at a behemoth scale,” Bianco said.He said he’s not in favor of Wall Street’s popular trade into cyclicals and out of growth. He still favors growth.“We’re overweight equities really because we’re concerned about rising interest rates,” Bianco said. “I’m not bullish in that I expect the market to rise that much from here.”“We stuck with growth and dug deeper into bond substitutes, utilities, staples, real estate,” he said, adding he is underweight industrials, energy and materials. “Energy is doomed. It’s being nationalized via regulation. I do like industrials, they are well-run companies, but I do think infrastructure spending expectations for classic infrastructure are too high.”He also said industrials are good businesses, but the stocks have become overvalued.Bianco said he likes big box stores, but smaller retailers are facing big challenges that were already impacting them prior to Covid. He also finds small biotech firms attractive.“I like healthcare stocks. Those valuations are reasonable. People have been paranoid about politicians beating on them since 1992. They manage through it and lately they’ve been delivering,” he said.Week ahead calendarMondayEarnings:Tesla,Canadian National Railway, Canon,Check Point Software,Otis Worldwide, Vale,Ameriprise,NXP Semiconductor,Albertsons, Royal Phillips8:30 a.m. Durable goodsTuesdayFOMC begins two day meetingEarnings:Microsoft,Alphabet,Visa,Amgen,Advanced Micro Devices,3M,General Electric,Eli Lilly, Hasbro,United Parcel Service,BP,Novartis,JetBlue,Pultegroup,Archer Daniels Midland,Waste Management,Starbucks,Texas Instrument,Chubb,Mondelez,FireEye,Corning,Raytheon9:00 a.m. S&P/Case-Shiller9:00 a.m. FHFA home prices10:00 a.m. Consumer confidence10:00 a.m. Housing vacanciesWednesdayEarnings:Apple, Boeing,Facebook,Qualcomm,Ford,MGM Resorts,Humana,Norfolk Southern,General Dynamics,Boston Scientific, eBay, Samsung Electronics, GlaxoSmithKline,Yum Brands, SiriusXM, Aflac,Cheesecake Factory,Community Health System,CIT Group,Entergy,CME Group,Hess,Ryder System8:30 a.m. Advance economic indicators2:00 p.m. Fed statement2:30 p.m. Fed Chairman Jerome Powell briefingThursdayEarnings:Amazon,Caterpillar,McDonald’s,Twitter,Bristol-Myers Squibb,Comcast,Merck,Northrop Grumman, Airbus,Kraft Heinz,Intercontinental Exchange,Mastercard,Gilead Sciences,U.S. Steel, Cirrus Logic,Texas Roadhouse, Cabot Oil, PG&E,Royal Dutch Shell,Church & Dwight, Carlyle Group,Southern Co.8:30 a.m. Initial jobless claims8:30 a.m. Real GDP Q110:00 a.m. Pending home salesFridayEarnings:ExxonMobil,Chevron,Colgate-Palmolive,AstraZeneca,Clorox,Barclays, AbbVie, BNP Paribas,Weyerhaeuser,Illinois Tool Works, CBOE Global Markets, Lazard,Newell Brands,Aon,LyondellBasell,Pitney Bowes,Phillips 66,Charter Communications8:30 a.m. Personal income and spending8:30 a.m. Employment cost index Q19:45 a.m. Chicago PMI10:00 a.m. Consumer sentimentSaturdayEarnings:Berkshire Hathaway","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":332,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":377376000,"gmtCreate":1619501046000,"gmtModify":1704725001851,"author":{"id":"3577585319193105","authorId":"3577585319193105","name":"AlexCP","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4675b625a128097d1dba0b56cfafb1d6","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3577585319193105","authorIdStr":"3577585319193105"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Gogogog","listText":"Gogogog","text":"Gogogog","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/377376000","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":175,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"lives":[]}
