stocks that recently upped their dividends by an impressive 20% or higher.</p><h2 id=\"id_1086778158\">UMS Holdings Limited (SGX: 558)</h2><p>UMS provides equipment manufacturing and engineering services to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) of semiconductors and related products.</p><p>For the first quarter of 2024 (1Q 2024), the group saw its revenue tumble by a third year on year to S$54 million because of weak demand within the semiconductor sector.</p><p>Net profit plunged by 44% year on year to S$9.8 million.</p><p>However, UMS generated a positive free cash flow of S$2.7 million for 1Q 2024.</p><p>Despite the weaker results, the group upped its dividend by 20% year on year to S$0.012.</p><p>Looking ahead, management is confident of its prospects as the group added a new customer that will bring in more business.</p><p>UMS also completed its 300,000-square-foot factory in Penang for RM 250 million.</p><p>The new customer, a global chip giant, was impressed by this new facility and expressed the desire to deepen the business relationship.</p><p>According to SEMI, signs are pointing to a return to growth for the semiconductor industry with analysts projecting a 9% to 16% year on year increase in semiconductor global revenue.</p><h2 id=\"id_1351456457\">iFAST Corporation Limited (SGX: AIY) </h2><p>iFAST is a financial technology company that operates platforms such as FundSupermart and FSMOne for the buying and selling of unit trusts, shares, and bonds.</p><p>The fintech reported a sparkling set of earnings for 1Q 2024.</p><p>Total revenue jumped 59.4% year on year to S$86 million with continued contributions from iFAST’s Hong Kong ePension project as well as improvements in the group’s core wealth management platform business.</p><p>Operating profit catapulted more than fourfold year on year to S$18.5 million while net profit soared 387.4% year on year to S$14.5 million.</p><p>In line with the robust earnings, management declared an interim dividend of S$0.013, up 30% from the S$0.01 paid out a year ago.</p><p>The group’s assets under administration also hit a new record of S$21.05 billion, up 16% from S$18.14 billion in 1Q 2023.</p><p>Looking ahead, iFAST expects 2024’s revenue and profit to see robust growth compared to 2023.</p><p>Its iFAST Global Bank division is also expected to become an important growth driver in 2025 and beyond.</p><h2 id=\"id_2557566735\">United Overseas Bank (SGX: U11)</h2><p>United Overseas Bank, or UOB, is the third-largest bank in Singapore.</p><p>The lender reported a strong set of earnings for 2023 and raised its final dividend to S$0.85.</p><p>2023’s total dividend came up to S$1.70 per share, a 26% year-on-year increase from the S$1.35 paid last year.</p><p>Although UOB’s core net profit dipped slightly by 1% year on year to S$1.57 billion for 1Q 2024, the bank remains well-positioned to benefit from higher-for-longer interest rates.</p><p>CEO Wee Ee Cheong reported that the group’s Citigroup (NYSE: C) acquisition is proceeding well.</p><p>Integration is completed in Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia with Vietnam set to complete the integration by next year.</p><p>UOB expects low single-digit loan growth along with double-digit fee growth for 2024, with total income expected to see positive growth.</p><h2 id=\"id_1228409603\">Singapore Post Limited (SGX: S08)</h2><p>Singapore Post, or SingPost, is Singapore’s sole postal service provider.</p><p>The group is also an e-commerce logistics provider serving customers in more than 220 global destinations.</p><p>Although SingPost’s revenue declined from S$1.87 billion to S$1.69 billion for fiscal 2024 (FY2024) ending 31 March 2024, net profit shot up to S$81.5 million from S$38.8 million a year ago.</p><p>The increase in profit was because of an exceptional gain of S$36.8 million on property revaluation.</p><p>Excluding this, SingPost’s core net profit still improved by 28.1% year on year to S$41.5 million.</p><p>A final dividend of S$0.0056 was proposed, taking FY2024’s dividend to S$0.0074 for a 28% year-on-year increase.</p><p>Management will continue to execute the group’s strategic plans over the next three years that were unveiled at its recently announced strategic review.</p><p>These include selective divestments of non-core assets and achieving scale in Australia by finding suitable partners.</p><p>SingPost also plans to expand its cross-border networks and look for partners for its international business.</p><h2 id=\"id_3023640778\">Singtel (SGX: Z74)</h2><p>Singtel is Singapore’s largest telecommunication company and like SingPost, the blue-chip group also announced a mixed set of results.</p><p>Operating revenue dipped by 3% year on year to S$14.1 billion but net profit was impacted by an exceptional loss of S$1.47 billion that caused it to plunge 64% year on year to S$795 million.</p><p>Excluding this item, underlying net profit would have risen by 10% year on year to S$2.26 billion as the telco saw increased regional associate contributions and enjoyed higher interest income.</p><p>Free cash flow stayed fairly constant at S$2.6 billion for FY2024.</p><p>Singtel will pay a total of S$0.15 in dividends for FY2024, a sharp 52% year on year increase from FY2023’s S$0.099.</p><p>The higher dividend is partially funded by a new value realisation dividend from the proceeds of capital recycling initiatives by the group.</p><p>Looking ahead, Singtel also released a Singtel28 plan featuring value-creation initiatives that seek Buying Costco at its present price … it may work out all right … but, again, it’s getting hard.”</em></p><h2 id=\"id_2657564278\">Buffett’s Big Costco Error</h2><p>In 1997, Costco (COST) offered Buffett a seat on the board, which he declined. Buffett suggested that Costco ask Munger instead, and Munger accepted. He remained on the board until his death.</p><p>Munger tried to convince Buffett to invest in Costco early, though it didn’t work. The reason: “Warren doesn’t like retailing.” Apparently, Buffett had seen many retailers come and go, including big department stores like Sears, and thought it a difficult business to make money from.</p><p>Munger thought differently and recognized early on that Costco had an incredible business model:</p><p><em>“They really did sell cheaper than anybody else in America and they did it in big, efficient stores. The parking spaces were 10 feet wide instead of eight or nine feet or whatever they normally are. They did it all right and they had a lot of parking spaces. They kept out of their stores. All these people didn’t do big volumes, and they gave special benefits to the people who did come to the stores in the way of reward points.”</em></p><h2 id=\"id_1827049133\">What Makes a Great Retailer</h2><p>Munger said Home Depot (HD) took the Costco business model and applied it to home improvements. “They copied everything,” he said.</p><p>Munger believed there was a more modern Costco imitator in a smaller company called Floor &amp; Decor (FND). As the name suggests, the business sells flooring, offering a huge selection via large warehouses, and with cheap prices to boot.</p><p>Munger was asked about whether he’d ever looked at Nike (NKE) as a business, and he said he had, though he rejected it because it’s a “style company.” Munger didn’t elaborate on this, though I suspect what he was alluding to is that with “style companies,” future prospects and earnings are difficult to forecast and that is not the type of business that he liked to invest in.</p><p>Munger preferred capital-light retailers with predictable earnings and pricing power:</p><p><em>“… we were lucky enough to buy See’s Candies for $20 million as our first acquisition. We found out fairly quickly that we could raise the price every year 10% and nobody cared. We didn’t make the volumes go up or anything like that. Just made the profits go up. We’ve been raising the price by 10% a year for all these 40 years or so. It’s been a very satisfactory company.</em></p><p><em>It didn’t require any new capital. That’s what was good about it: very little new capital. It had two big kitchens and a bunch of rental stores when we bought it, and now it’s got two big kitchens and a bunch of rental stores.”</em></p><h2 id=\"id_1552794459\">Berkshire’s Investment in Apple</h2><p>Buffett’s most high-profile recent investment is in Apple (AAPL). Berkshire first purchased a stake in 2016, and it’s since been a home run. Apple accounts for close to 50% of Berkshire’s stock portfolio.</p><p>Munger’s take on the lessons from Berkshire’s investment is intriguing:</p><p><em>“What everybody has learned is that everybody needs some significant participation in the 12 companies that do better than everybody else. You need two or three of them, at least. If you have that mindset. Apple was the logical candidate to be on the list of which you’re going to select your companies. It’s not very hard to come up with an idea that it may be OK.”</em></p><p>This seems to be a recognition that when you’re a big investor like Berkshire, you must be invested in some of these great technology companies or risk underperformance.</p><p>As for why Berkshire picked Apple, Munger said it was valuation, as the company got down to around 10 times earnings when Berkshire bought in.</p><h2 id=\"id_3408520693\">Buffett’s Investment in Japan Trading Companies</h2><p>Buffett’s other recent investment success has come from the unlikely place of Japan. Berkshire first started investing in Japanese trading companies in 2020 and retains stakes in five of them: Mitsubishi, Mitsui, Itochu, Marubeni, and Sumitomo.</p><p>Munger implied that there was leverage involved in the purchases. He says that at the time, you could borrow in Japan at 0.5% for 10 years, and these stocks had cheap assets and dividend yields of 5%, making them “no-brainer” investments:</p><p><em>“It took him [Buffett] forever to get $10 billion invested. It was like God just opening a chest and just pouring money. It’s awfully easy money.”</em></p><h2 id=\"id_1569812884\">Why Munger Liked China</h2><p>Munger had been a longtime investor in China. He persuaded Buffett to invest in automaker BYD in 2008. Munger has since called this one of the best decisions that he’s ever made.</p><p>Munger claimed that BYD founder Wang Chuanfu is a genius and said he’s better at making things than Elon Musk.</p><p>In the interview, Munger didn’t address his more recent investment in online retailer Alibaba (BABA), which hasn’t worked out thus far.</p><p>On China itself, Munger remained a believer:</p><p><em>“My position in China has been that: (1) the Chinese economy has better future prospects over the next 20 years than almost any other big economy. That’s number one. (2) The leading companies of China are stronger and better than practically any other leading companies anywhere, and they’re available at a much cheaper price.</em></p><p><em>So naturally, I’m willing to have some China risk in the Munger portfolio. How much China risk? Well, that’s not a scientific subject, but I don’t mind whatever it is, 18% or something.”</em></p><h2 id=\"id_1518081945\">Choice Words</h2><p>Munger was known for his blunt manner, and he didn’t hold back on a few subjects. One such subject is U.S. billionaire John Malone, who owns Formula One and the Atlanta Braves baseball team, among other things. Malone is credited with the rise of EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization) as a financial term among corporations, a term that Munger long abhorred. Munger said he’s never liked Malone’s “extreme manipulations,” including his famous methods of minimizing tax at his listed companies.</p><p>Munger also said he was uncomfortable with investors who principally use algorithms like the famous hedge fund Renaissance Technologies. Apple accounts for close to 50% of Berkshire’s stock portfolio.Munger’s take on the lessons from Berkshire’s investment is intriguing:“What everybody has learned is that everybody needs some significant participation in the 12 companies that do better than everybody else. You need two or three of them, at least. If you have that mindset. Apple was the logical candidate to be on the list of which you’re going to select your companies. It’s not very hard to come up with an idea that it may be OK.”This seems to be a recognition that when you’re a big investor like Berkshire, you must be invested in some of these great technology companies or risk underperformance.As for why Berkshire picked Apple, Munger said it was valuation, as the company got down to around 10 times earnings when Berkshire bought in.Buffett’s Investment in Japan Trading CompaniesBuffett’s other recent investment success has come from the unlikely place of Japan. Berkshire first started investing in Japanese trading companies in 2020 and retains stakes in five of them: Mitsubishi, Mitsui, Itochu, Marubeni, and Sumitomo.Munger implied that there was leverage involved in the purchases. He says that at the time, you could borrow in Japan at 0.5% for 10 years, and these stocks had cheap assets and dividend yields of 5%, making them “no-brainer” investments:“It took him [Buffett] forever to get $10 billion invested. It was like God just opening a chest and just pouring money. It’s awfully easy money.”Why Munger Liked ChinaMunger had been a longtime investor in China. He persuaded Buffett to invest in automaker BYD in 2008. Munger has since called this one of the best decisions that he’s ever made.Munger claimed that BYD founder Wang Chuanfu is a genius and said he’s better at making things than Elon Musk.In the interview, Munger didn’t address his more recent investment in online retailer Alibaba (BABA), which hasn’t worked out thus far.On China itself, Munger remained a believer:“My position in China has been that: (1) the Chinese economy has better future prospects over the next 20 years than almost any other big economy. (2) The leading companies of China are stronger and better than practically any other leading companies anywhere, and they’re available at a much cheaper price.So naturally, I’m willing to have some China risk in the Munger portfolio. How much China risk? This drop in government growth appears to have recoiled the stock from the previous bullishness priced in during the initial succeeding weeks following Russia’s invasion. Management has explained that government growth will reaccelerate, however.</li><li>2Q22 revenue YoY growth guidance declines to 20% &gt;&gt;&gt; though management explained they expect a reacceleration in 2H22.</li><li>The Rule of 40 – growth plus FCF margin – has declined sharply to 36% in 1Q22. It seems as though the double whammy of overall growth only being a whisker higher than the long-term guidance of 30%+ combined with a steepish drop in FCF margin has put off investors. Investors should bear in mind, however, that FCF margin is volatile for software stocks, especially for firms like PLTR involved in lengthy procurement timelines and very large deals.</li></ul><p><b>Bullish points</b></p><ul><li>Government business growth is expected to reaccelerate in 2H22.</li><li>40 net new customer adds in 1Q22 – this is compared to c. 100 in FY21 and only six in FY20. At this rate of customer growth, there will be 160 net new customers in FY22. This is what has really caught our attention. PLTR is finding operating leverage and scaling out its business with lower friction for customer onboarding. And it’s possible that if PLTR has accelerated customer onboarding this quick, then perhaps S&amp;M resources have been spread too thin to drive the land-and-expand sales, thus depressing the overall growth somewhat.</li><li>Commercial growth has now accelerated for five sequential quarters – rising to 54% YoY growth in 1Q22.</li><li>The contribution margin gradually improved in 1Q22 despite the influx of new customers. Just imagine when PLTR has 1000s of customers and the new customers each quarter represent a much smaller percentage of the total customer base... this means PLTR’s overall contribution margin is going to be way closer to the Scale Phase contribution margin of c. 75% (it’s actually close to 90% for very large Scale Phase customers).</li><li>1Q22 operating margin was -9%, showing steady progress toward breakeven.</li><li>SBC as a percentage of revenue is declining at a solid pace. We expect it will normalize toward 10%-20% - which appears to be a typical range for multibillion dollar revenue software firms – within the next couple of years.</li></ul><p>Once PLTR has further optimized its S&amp;M operations (remember that they only began in 2020), the large influx of new customers combined with the presumably low initial land/expand momentum, presents substantial durable growth for the coming quarters.</p><h2>Long-Term Profitability Potential</h2><p>For the bears who believe PLTR won’t be a highly profitable company, they should consider the following table. PLTR is generating revenue per employee of $560k, which is almost midway between the average (that is, our estimate of the average based on doing quite a few of these calculations) of $250k-$350k to the beginning of tech giant range – or even further than midway if you use ADBE as the start of the tech giants’ range. We like this metric because it gives a glimpse into the core unit economics and is very insightful for assessing future profitability of GAAP loss making firms.</p><p>Figure 2 - Revenue Per Employee</p><p><img src=\"https://static.seekingalpha.com/uploads/2022/5/16/51770674-16527051616299996.png\" tg-width=\"273\" tg-height=\"284\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>Convequity</p><p>All the firms with high revenue per employee are complete dominators in their core market – hence why they’ve become tech giants – and they are highly profitable (except for SQ at present). PLTR is generating $560k per employee with only c. 280 customers to date. So, investors should expect this metric to move deep into the tech giant range when PLTR scales into 1000s of customers – we’ll touch on this likelihood later – which should translate into high profit margins.</p><h2>Our Overarching Thesis</h2><p>Our overarching thesis is predicated on the observation that technological evolution is merely a back and forth between centralization/aggregation/consolidation and decentralization/disaggregation/fragmentation. The same technology is alleviating the various deployment pain points for developers and organizations all over the globe.</p><p>We compare this directly to what Amazon did with AWS – offer out an internally used resource to third party clients. Although, in the last couple of weeks PLTR has launched a site dedicated to helping developers learn how to use Foundry with loads of documentation, which is a significant milestone toward eventually allowing anybody to pay for Foundry with a credit card and get started super quickly. This could mitigate the execution risk outlined in the previous section, but investors would definitely like to see further progress to make it easier to get started with Foundry.</p><p>Gaining adoption throughout the developer communities is the key to generating the flywheel network effect that ourselves and other analysts have discussed previously. And no doubt this is a solid step in the right direction to make this happen.</p><h2>Valuation</h2><p>We remain very bullish over the long-term because relatively and in absolute terms, PLTR is grossly undervalued. Amid the heightened geopolitical risk, we are now seeing the highest possibility of a nuclear attack in our lifetime since the Cold War. Various European countries, Germany especially, are ramping up military and defense spending. Furthermore, supply chain crises, inflation concerns, and ongoing digital disruption, are all posing a huge risk for organizations as they are inherently slow to change, all of which offers PLTR a very large and durable growth runway. Thus, we believe the 30%+ growth guidance through FY25 by management is likely and our DCF valuation values the stock within a range of $25 to $35 per share.</p><p>PLTR’s forward EV/GP also illuminates the attractiveness of the stock right now. Based on an EV of $14,810m, TTM gross profit of $1,287m, and a NTM growth of 30%, we arrive at an EV/GP/Growth of 0.38, which is very low for a high-growth BoB software firm. PLTR’s NTM EV/S of c. 7x also shows that the stock is trading close to half that of legacy tech names. Multiples based on items further down the income statement are indeed less attractive, though for us and many other high-growth software investors, given PLTR’s growth outlook and immature operations, we will focus more on these multiples when growth further matures. Additionally, the high gross margin, revenue per employee, and other business metrics, give us comfort that PLTR will eventually be very profitable.</p><h2>Conclusion</h2><p>Along with the general macro gloom, short-termism has dragged down the stock but in the long-term the risk-reward is highly attractive. There are execution risks because PLTR has long had superior software though has only accumulated c. 280 customers to date. Developers, data scientists, and data engineers, won’t wait around much longer before opting for alternatives to solve their most complicated problems - hence PLTR needs to lower the onboarding frictions ASAP. Although, recently we’ve seen signs of PLTR offering easier onboarding (i.e., the developer site) so that is really positive.</p><p>If PLTR can execute, then durable growth will prevail and the firm will maximize its highly profitable unit economics. Just imagine when PLTR has 1000s of customers and the new customers each quarter represent a much smaller percentage of the total customer base... this means PLTR’s overall contribution margin is going to be way closer to the Scale Phase contribution margin of c. 75% (it’s actually close to 90% for very large Scale Phase customers).1Q22 operating margin was -9%, showing steady progress toward breakeven.SBC as a percentage of revenue is declining at a solid pace. Edwin Davis, a doctor in their hometown of Omaha, Nebraska, told Buffett in 1957 that he trusted him to manage money because Buffett reminded him of someone called Charlie Munger. “Well, I don’t know who Charlie Munger is, but I like him,” Buffett responded to Davis. Two years later, Davis arranged for the pair to meet, and they hit it off right away.</p><p>Munger was originally a lawyer by trade. He started his own investment firm in 1962 and went on to crush the market over the following 13 years, compounding his portfolio at 19.8% per year compared with the Dow Jones Industrial Average’s 5.0%.</p><p>In 1978, Munger became Vice Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A BRK.B). Munger is credited for helping change Buffett’s investment approach from buying cheap, often low-quality companies, to purchasing great companies at reasonable prices.</p><p>Munger was known for his sharp mind and wit. He gave a rare interview to the <em>Acquired</em> podcast in October and offered some great insights on a range of investment topics.</p><h2 id=\"id_2758548408\">Munger and Buffett’s Investment Approaches</h2><p>Buffett got his first taste of investing as a young man at the racetrack. Munger was asked about this, and his response gives a key insight into the way that Buffett approaches the stock market:</p><p><em>“Warren never gambled. He was only a patron of them [the racetracks]. Warren wants the odds in his favor, not somebody else. It’s just so simple if you’re Warren. You want to be the house, not the punter.”</em></p><p>There are many famous investors who started out as gamblers—Edward Thorp, Bill Gross, and Jeff Yass come to mind. Buffett is also in this bracket. He took the mindset of an expert gambler—betting when the odds are overwhelmingly in your favor—and parlayed that into investing.</p><p>On his own investment approach, Munger gave a surprising answer. Though he was known for liking stocks that earn high returns on capital over long periods, Munger acknowledged that’s not the only way he invested:</p><p><em>“I only study two kinds of companies. I’m enough of a big Ben Graham follower … so if something is really cheap, even though it’s a crappy company, I’m willing to consider buying it. For a while anyway. I do that occasionally. I’ve done it with great success a time or two, but unlike Howard Marks, I’ve only done it once or twice in my lifetime for big gains, and that’s it. It’s not like I’ve done it a hundred times. It isn’t a bit easy. A hundred times easy money is almost nonexistent.</em></p><p><em>… Great brand companies, of course, are good. Getting the right price … the whole trick is getting them on a few rare occasions when they’re really cheap. Buying Costco at its present price … it may work out all right … but, again, it’s getting hard.”</em></p><h2 id=\"id_2657564278\">Buffett’s Big Costco Error</h2><p>In 1997, Costco (COST) offered Buffett a seat on the board, which he declined. Buffett suggested that Costco ask Munger instead, and Munger accepted. He remained on the board until his death.</p><p>Munger tried to convince Buffett to invest in Costco early, though it didn’t work. The reason: “Warren doesn’t like retailing.” Apparently, Buffett had seen many retailers come and go, including big department stores like Sears, and thought it a difficult business to make money from.</p><p>Munger thought differently and recognized early on that Costco had an incredible business model:</p><p><em>“They really did sell cheaper than anybody else in America and they did it in big, efficient stores. The parking spaces were 10 feet wide instead of eight or nine feet or whatever they normally are. They did it all right and they had a lot of parking spaces. They kept out of their stores. All these people didn’t do big volumes, and they gave special benefits to the people who did come to the stores in the way of reward points.”</em></p><h2 id=\"id_1827049133\">What Makes a Great Retailer</h2><p>Munger said Home Depot (HD) took the Costco business model and applied it to home improvements. “They copied everything,” he said.</p><p>Munger believed there was a more modern Costco imitator in a smaller company called Floor &amp; Decor (FND). As the name suggests, the business sells flooring, offering a huge selection via large warehouses, and with cheap prices to boot.</p><p>Munger was asked about whether he’d ever looked at Nike (NKE) as a business, and he said he had, though he rejected it because it’s a “style company.” Munger didn’t elaborate on this, though I suspect what he was alluding to is that with “style companies,” future prospects and earnings are difficult to forecast and that is not the type of business that he liked to invest in.</p><p>Munger preferred capital-light retailers with predictable earnings and pricing power:</p><p><em>“… we were lucky enough to buy See’s Candies for $20 million as our first acquisition. We found out fairly quickly that we could raise the price every year 10% and nobody cared. We didn’t make the volumes go up or anything like that. Just made the profits go up. We’ve been raising the price by 10% a year for all these 40 years or so. It’s been a very satisfactory company.</em></p><p><em>It didn’t require any new capital. That’s what was good about it: very little new capital. It had two big kitchens and a bunch of rental stores when we bought it, and now it’s got two big kitchens and a bunch of rental stores.”</em></p><h2 id=\"id_1552794459\">Berkshire’s Investment in Apple</h2><p>Buffett’s most high-profile recent investment is in Apple (AAPL). Berkshire first purchased a stake in 2016, and it’s since been a home run. Apple accounts for close to 50% of Berkshire’s stock portfolio.</p><p>Munger’s take on the lessons from Berkshire’s investment is intriguing:</p><p><em>“What everybody has learned is that everybody needs some significant participation in the 12 companies that do better than everybody else. You need two or three of them, at least. If you have that mindset. Apple was the logical candidate to be on the list of which you’re going to select your companies. It’s not very hard to come up with an idea that it may be OK.”</em></p><p>This seems to be a recognition that when you’re a big investor like Berkshire, you must be invested in some of these great technology companies or risk underperformance.</p><p>As for why Berkshire picked Apple, Munger said it was valuation, as the company got down to around 10 times earnings when Berkshire bought in.</p><h2 id=\"id_3408520693\">Buffett’s Investment in Japan Trading Companies</h2><p>Buffett’s other recent investment success has come from the unlikely place of Japan. Berkshire first started investing in Japanese trading companies in 2020 and retains stakes in five of them: Mitsubishi, Mitsui, Itochu, Marubeni, and Sumitomo.</p><p>Munger implied that there was leverage involved in the purchases. He says that at the time, you could borrow in Japan at 0.5% for 10 years, and these stocks had cheap assets and dividend yields of 5%, making them “no-brainer” investments:</p><p><em>“It took him [Buffett] forever to get $10 billion invested. It was like God just opening a chest and just pouring money. It’s awfully easy money.”</em></p><h2 id=\"id_1569812884\">Why Munger Liked China</h2><p>Munger had been a longtime investor in China. He persuaded Buffett to invest in automaker BYD in 2008. Munger has since called this one of the best decisions that he’s ever made.</p><p>Munger claimed that BYD founder Wang Chuanfu is a genius and said he’s better at making things than Elon Musk.</p><p>In the interview, Munger didn’t address his more recent investment in online retailer Alibaba (BABA), which hasn’t worked out thus far.</p><p>On China itself, Munger remained a believer:</p><p><em>“My position in China has been that: (1) the Chinese economy has better future prospects over the next 20 years than almost any other big economy. That’s number one. (2) The leading companies of China are stronger and better than practically any other leading companies anywhere, and they’re available at a much cheaper price.</em></p><p><em>So naturally, I’m willing to have some China risk in the Munger portfolio. How much China risk? Well, that’s not a scientific subject, but I don’t mind whatever it is, 18% or something.”</em></p><h2 id=\"id_1518081945\">Choice Words</h2><p>Munger was known for his blunt manner, and he didn’t hold back on a few subjects. One such subject is U.S. billionaire John Malone, who owns Formula One and the Atlanta Braves baseball team, among other things. Malone is credited with the rise of EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization) as a financial term among corporations, a term that Munger long abhorred. Munger said he’s never liked Malone’s “extreme manipulations,” including his famous methods of minimizing tax at his listed companies.</p><p>Munger also said he was uncomfortable with investors who principally use algorithms like the famous hedge fund Renaissance Technologies. He says these funds essentially front-run investors. Two years later, Davis arranged for the pair to meet, and they hit it off right away.Munger was originally a lawyer by trade. He started his own investment firm in 1962 and went on to crush the market over the following 13 years, compounding his portfolio at 19.8% per year compared with the Dow Jones Industrial Average’s 5.0%.In 1978, Munger became Vice Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A BRK.B). Munger is credited for helping change Buffett’s investment approach from buying cheap, often low-quality companies, to purchasing great companies at reasonable prices.Munger was known for his sharp mind and wit. He gave a rare interview to the Acquired podcast in October and offered some great insights on a range of investment topics.Munger and Buffett’s Investment ApproachesBuffett got his first taste of investing as a young man at the racetrack. Munger was asked about this, and his response gives a key insight into the way that Buffett approaches the stock market:“Warren never gambled. He was only a patron of them [the racetracks]. Warren wants the odds in his favor, not somebody else. It’s just so simple if you’re Warren. You want to be the house, not the punter.”There are many famous investors who started out as gamblers—Edward Thorp, Bill Gross, and Jeff Yass come to mind. Buffett is also in this bracket. He took the mindset of an expert gambler—betting when the odds are overwhelmingly in your favor—and parlayed that into investing.On his own investment approach, Munger gave a surprising answer. Though he was known for liking stocks that earn high returns on capital over long periods, Munger acknowledged that’s not the only way he invested:“I only study two kinds of companies. I’m enough of a big Ben Graham follower … so if something is really cheap, even though it’s a crappy company, I’m willing to consider buying it. For a while anyway. I do that occasionally. I’ve done it with great success a time or two, but unlike Howard Marks, I’ve only done it once or twice in my lifetime for big gains, and that’s it. It’s not like I’ve done it a hundred times. It isn’t a bit easy. A hundred times easy money is almost nonexistent.… Great brand companies, of course, are good. Getting the right price … the whole trick is getting them on a few rare occasions when they’re really cheap. Buying Costco at its present price … it may work out all right … but, again, it’s getting hard.”Buffett’s Big Costco ErrorIn 1997, Costco (COST) offered Buffett a seat on the board, which he declined. Buffett suggested that Costco ask Munger instead, and Munger accepted. He remained on the board until his death.Munger tried to convince Buffett to invest in Costco early, though it didn’t work. The reason: “Warren doesn’t like retailing.” Apparently, Buffett had seen many retailers come and go, including big department stores like Sears, and thought it a difficult business to make money from.Munger thought differently and recognized early on that Costco had an incredible business model:“They really did sell cheaper than anybody else in America and they did it in big, efficient stores. The parking spaces were 10 feet wide instead of eight or nine feet or whatever they normally are. They did it all right and they had a lot of parking spaces. They kept out of their stores. All these people didn’t do big volumes, and they gave special benefits to the people who did come to the stores in the way of reward points.”What Makes a Great RetailerMunger said Home Depot (HD) took the Costco business model and applied it to home improvements. “They copied everything,” he said.Munger believed there was a more modern Costco imitator in a smaller company called Floor & Decor (FND). As the name suggests, the business sells flooring, offering a huge selection via large warehouses, and with cheap prices to boot.Munger was asked about whether he’d ever looked at Nike (NKE) as a business, and he said he had, though he rejected it because it’s a “style company.” Munger didn’t elaborate on this, though I suspect what he was alluding to is that with “style companies,” future prospects and earnings are difficult to forecast and that is not the type of business that he liked to invest in.Munger preferred capital-light retailers with predictable earnings and pricing power:“… we were lucky enough to buy See’s Candies for $20 million as our first acquisition. We found out fairly quickly that we could raise the price every year 10% and nobody cared. We didn’t make the volumes go up or anything like that. Just made the profits go up. We’ve been raising the price by 10% a year for all these 40 years or so. It’s been a very satisfactory company.It didn’t require any new capital. That’s what was good about it: very little new capital. It had two big kitchens and a bunch of rental stores when we bought it, and now it’s got two big kitchens and a bunch of rental stores.”Berkshire’s Investment in AppleBuffett’s most high-profile recent investment is in Apple (AAPL). Berkshire first purchased a stake in 2016, and it’s since been a home run. Apple accounts for close to 50% of Berkshire’s stock portfolio.Munger’s take on the lessons from Berkshire’s investment is intriguing:“What everybody has learned is that everybody needs some significant participation in the 12 companies that do better than everybody else. You need two or three of them, at least. If you have that mindset. Apple was the logical candidate to be on the list of which you’re going to select your companies. It’s not very hard to come up with an idea that it may be OK.”This seems to be a recognition that when you’re a big investor like Berkshire, you must be invested in some of these great technology companies or risk underperformance.As for why Berkshire picked Apple, Munger said it was valuation, as the company got down to around 10 times earnings when Berkshire bought in.Buffett’s Investment in Japan Trading CompaniesBuffett’s other recent investment success has come from the unlikely place of Japan. Berkshire first started investing in Japanese trading companies in 2020 and retains stakes in five of them: Mitsubishi, Mitsui, Itochu, Marubeni, and Sumitomo.Munger implied that there was leverage involved in the purchases. He says that at the time, you could borrow in Japan at 0.5% for 10 years, and these stocks had cheap assets and dividend yields of 5%, making them “no-brainer” investments:“It took him [Buffett] forever to get $10 billion invested. It was like God just opening a chest and just pouring money. It’s awfully easy money.”Why Munger Liked ChinaMunger had been a longtime investor in China. He persuaded Buffett to invest in automaker BYD in 2008. Munger has since called this one of the best decisions that he’s ever made.Munger claimed that BYD founder Wang Chuanfu is a genius and said he’s better at making things than Elon Musk.In the interview, Munger didn’t address his more recent investment in online retailer Alibaba (BABA), which hasn’t worked out thus far.On China itself, Munger remained a believer:“My position in China has been that: (1) the Chinese economy has better future prospects over the next 20 years than almost any other big economy. That’s number one. (2) The leading companies of China are stronger and better than practically any other leading companies anywhere, and they’re available at a much cheaper price.So naturally, I’m willing to have some China risk in the Munger portfolio. How much China risk? Well, that’s not a scientific subject, but I don’t mind whatever it is, 18% or something.”Choice WordsMunger was known for his blunt manner, and he didn’t hold back on a few subjects. One such subject is U.S. billionaire John Malone, who owns Formula One and the Atlanta Braves baseball team, among other things. Malone is credited with the rise of EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization) as a financial term among corporations, a term that Munger long abhorred. Munger said he’s never liked Malone’s “extreme manipulations,” including his famous methods of minimizing tax at his listed companies.Munger also said he was uncomfortable with investors who principally use algorithms like the famous hedge fund Renaissance Technologies. He says these funds essentially front-run investors.
