PacWest's statement followed a further plunge in the bank's stock price of as much as 55% in after-hours trading after Bloomberg News reported the bank was weighing strategic options, including a sale. \n</p>\n<p>\n     PacWest said it was in discussions with partners and investors and that the talks were ongoing. \n</p>\n<p>\n     \"Recently, the company has been approached by several potential partners and investors -- discussions are ongoing. PacWest's statement followed a further plunge in the bank's stock price of as much as 55% in after-hours trading after Bloomberg News reported the bank was weighing strategic options, including a sale. \n\n\n     PacWest said it was in discussions with partners and investors and that the talks were ongoing. \n\n\n     \"Recently, the company has been approached by several potential partners and investors -- discussions are ongoing. The company will continue to evaluate all options to maximize shareholder value,\" the lender said. \n\n\n     In addition, the company paid down $1 billion of borrowings with its excess liquidity and said its cash and available liquidity remains solid and exceeded its uninsured deposits, representing 188% as of May 2. \n\n\n     PacWest is one of the banks that has come under the most pressure since the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank. Since then, banks with high levels of uninsured deposits or higher risk loan books have seen a run on deposits. \n\n\n     D.A. Davidson analyst Gary Tenner said PacWest stock was \"not trading on fundamentals, given market fears.\" He downgraded the shares to Neutral from Buy. RBC Capital Markets analysts were more bullish, maintaining their Outperform rating following PacWest's update, which they described as being \"helpful.\" \n\n\n     Shares of other regional lenders were also lower Thursday. On top of concerns about PacWest, banks reacted to the news that the Federal Reserve hiked interest rates for a tenth time this cycle on Wednesday. Higher interest rates put pressure on banks by raising the costs of borrowing, potentially pressuring customers and limiting the amount of people applying to take out loans. \n\n\n     The SPRD S&P Regional Banking exchange-traded fund $(KRE)$ fell 3.7% in premarket trading. The S&P 500, by comparison, was off 0.2%. \n\n\n     Western Alliance Bancorp $(WAL)$, down 16% in premarket trading, also issued a statement Wednesday, saying it hasn't experienced unusual deposit outflows in recent days and that its capital base remains strong. Its shares fell 4.4% on Wednesday. \n\n\n     Comerica $(CMA)$ slipped 6.4%, and Valley National $(VLY)$ dropped 5.2%. Shares of both have seen selling earlier in the week. \n\n\n     Activist investor Bill Ackman called for a systemwide deposit guarantee regime to be implemented, adding \"we are running out of time to fix this problem.\" \n\n\n     \"How many more unnecessary bank failures do we need to watch before the FDIC, the U.S. Treasury and our government wake up?,\" he said on Twitter late Wednesday. \"Confidence in a financial institution is built over decades and destroyed in days. What words describe the company’s reputation among its depositors, not to mention the shareholders who are deep underwater?</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Sure, there are still perma-bulls out there who believe a miracle could happen and First Republic Bank could be spared from financial and reputation damage. However, sensible investors need to be realistic and objectively assess First Republic’s future prospects, which are far from ideal.</p><h2 style=\"text-align: start;\">Banking Sector Shock Destroys FRC Stock</h2><p style=\"text-align: start;\">By now, you’ve probably caught wind of the disasters that befell regional banks like <strong>SVB Financial Group</strong> (OTCMKTS: <strong>SIVBQ</strong>) subsidiary Silicon Valley Bank and <strong>Signature Bank</strong> (OTCMKTS: <strong>SBNY</strong>). Chances are, many long-term investors of those banks will never get back to breakeven.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">First Republic Bank’s loyal investors are also in bad shape now. FRC stock once traded at $219 per share, believe it or not. This year, it has fallen below $15.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">It’s up to you to decide whether the magnitude of the share-price drawdown is justified. Consider this, though: Around two-thirds of First Republic’s deposits were in uninsured accounts, according to <em>The Wall Street Journal</em>.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">First Republic Bank had too many uninsured deposits. It’s also likely that First Republic over-leveraged itself on bonds, much like Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank did. So now, First Republic Bank’s investors are sitting on deep share-price losses and are probably not happy that the company suspended its dividend.</p><h2 style=\"text-align: start;\">First Republic Bank Rescue Package Isn’t Free Money</h2><p style=\"text-align: start;\">You may have learned that a group of 11 big banks pledged $30 billion worth of deposits to First Republic Bank. At first glance, this sounds like terrific news that solves First Republic’s problems.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Let’s not jump to conclusions, though. These are deposits, not free gifts to First Republic Bank. The depositors aren’t charities, and undoubtedly expect to get their money back with interest.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">First Republic Bank’s financial issues won’t just go away anytime soon. First Republic’s paper losses are probably between $9.4 billion and $13.5 billion. And, don’t count on a takeover saving First Republic Bank soon, as the company reportedly isn’t seeking a buyer.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Don’t be surprised if First Republic Bank resorts to a large-scale share sale to shore up its capital position. Indeed, the <em>WSJ</em> reported that, according to “three people with knowledge of the process,” First Republic is considering deals that would involve “selling new shares.” Most likely, a massive share sale would have a dilutive effect, thereby putting negative pressure on the FRC stock price.</p><h2 style=\"text-align: start;\">FRC Stock Is Definitely Not a Bargain</h2><p style=\"text-align: start;\">First Republic Bank’s shareholders may just have to accept their losses and move on. The company’s financial issues and reputational damage will probably persist for a long time.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Don’t expect the aforementioned $30 billion worth of deposits to keep First Republic Bank afloat over the long term. Finally, even at its drastically reduced price, FRC stock is definitely not a bargain.
