The internet was new, and an investor frenzy bid up stocks that had anything to do with the worldwide web. Eventually, the bubble burst and most of the frenzied stocks are no longer around today.
\n
A similar craze with electric vehicles (EVs) has occurred; electric vehicle company Rivian may IPO at a larger valuation than Ford Motor Company without delivering a single vehicle! But just like the internet, electric vehicles are coming, and some great companies are leading the charge; here are three of them.
\n
1. The dominant electric vehicle company
\n
Tesla, led by CEO Elon Musk, brought electric vehicles into the mainstream discussion in 2012 when the Model S launched. The rest of the automotive industry watched Tesla's deliveries grow from 22,442 vehicles in 2013 to 499,535 in 2020; now, the entire industry is racing to bring competitive electric vehicles to market.
\n
\n
The company has an enormous first-mover advantage in the United States market, with an estimated 71% market share of electric vehicles. In 2020, Tesla models represented 79% of new electric vehicle registrations in the U.S.
\n
Electric car stocks are entering the picture, such as Rivian,Lordstown Motors, and Lucid Motors; plus, legacy automotive manufacturers are bringing EV models into their lineups. But many of these competitors still need to prove their success, while Tesla remains the face of electric vehicle technology. It remains the safest investment in an emerging space until a competitor manages to take meaningful market share from them.
\n
2. The largest charging network
\n
Charging stations are an important, yet often forgotten, aspect of the electric vehicle market. Tesla has famously invested in its own charging network, but most automotive manufacturers are not doing so, leaving EV drivers in need of a network of chargers to support their travel needs.
\n
ChargePoint Holdings is the dominant charging network in North America, with more than 118,000 active stations and seven times as much market share as its closest competitor. The company has more than 5,000 customers that choose ChargePoint to bring EV charging to their premises, including businesses, fleets, resorts, and residences.
\n
There is a clear political push for electric vehicles and ESG (environmental, social, and governance) standards that companies are striving for, so the tailwinds are there for consumers to continue gravitating toward EVs. This will directly benefit ChargePoint, whose software and service segments will generate recurring revenue as its charging network grows.
\n
3. A potential disruptor of the battery business
\n
Whereas the engine is the critical component of the gas-powered vehicle, the battery is the heart of the EV. QuantumScape is a battery technology company working to bring a new type of EV battery to market.
\n
QuantumScape's battery is a solid-state lithium-metal battery, which is more energy-dense than traditional lithium-ion batteries, and the company claims it can be charged faster and last longer. The company also has more than 200 patents and applications pending, giving QuantumScape legal protection if the battery is as effective as it hopes it is.
\n
However, the battery is still in development, meaning the company is essentially \"pre-revenue\" and a riskier investment than both Tesla and ChargePoint. Furthermore, the commercialization of the battery is still several years away, with management expecting testing to begin in 2023 and a full launch in 2025. Investors should be aware that QuantumScape doesn't yet have a product and that buying the stock is a bet that promises turn into real results in the future.
\n
Here's the bottom line
\n
The automotive industry is collectively worth more than $2 trillion and could someday be fully electric. The opportunity for huge returns is there for investors, just like the internet in its earliest days. But just like the dot-com boom, investors need to be careful to identify the leaders of EV technology and not get caught up with the pretenders that never amount to much.
\n
With Tesla, ChargePoint, and QuantumScape, investors have exposure to EVs, the infrastructure beneath them, and a high-upside leap forward in battery technology. The internet was new, and an investor frenzy bid up stocks that had anything to do with the worldwide web. Eventually, the bubble burst and most of the frenzied stocks are no longer around today.\nA similar craze with electric vehicles (EVs) has occurred; electric vehicle company Rivian may IPO at a larger valuation than Ford Motor Company without delivering a single vehicle! But just like the internet, electric vehicles are coming, and some great companies are leading the charge; here are three of them.\n1. The dominant electric vehicle company\nTesla, led by CEO Elon Musk, brought electric vehicles into the mainstream discussion in 2012 when the Model S launched. The rest of the automotive industry watched Tesla's deliveries grow from 22,442 vehicles in 2013 to 499,535 in 2020; now, the entire industry is racing to bring competitive electric vehicles to market.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nThe company has an enormous first-mover advantage in the United States market, with an estimated 71% market share of electric vehicles. In 2020, Tesla models represented 79% of new electric vehicle registrations in the U.S.\nElectric car stocks are entering the picture, such as Rivian,Lordstown Motors, and Lucid Motors; plus, legacy automotive manufacturers are bringing EV models into their lineups. But many of these competitors still need to prove their success, while Tesla remains the face of electric vehicle technology. It remains the safest investment in an emerging space until a competitor manages to take meaningful market share from them.\n2. The largest charging network\nCharging stations are an important, yet often forgotten, aspect of the electric vehicle market. Tesla has famously invested in its own charging network, but most automotive manufacturers are not doing so, leaving EV drivers in need of a network of chargers to support their travel needs.\nChargePoint Holdings is the dominant charging network in North America, with more than 118,000 active stations and seven times as much market share as its closest competitor. The company has more than 5,000 customers that choose ChargePoint to bring EV charging to their premises, including businesses, fleets, resorts, and residences.\nThere is a clear political push for electric vehicles and ESG (environmental, social, and governance) standards that companies are striving for, so the tailwinds are there for consumers to continue gravitating toward EVs. This will directly benefit ChargePoint, whose software and service segments will generate recurring revenue as its charging network grows.\n3. A potential disruptor of the battery business\nWhereas the engine is the critical component of the gas-powered vehicle, the battery is the heart of the EV. QuantumScape is a battery technology company working to bring a new type of EV battery to market.\nQuantumScape's battery is a solid-state lithium-metal battery, which is more energy-dense than traditional lithium-ion batteries, and the company claims it can be charged faster and last longer. The company also has more than 200 patents and applications pending, giving QuantumScape legal protection if the battery is as effective as it hopes it is.\nHowever, the battery is still in development, meaning the company is essentially \"pre-revenue\" and a riskier investment than both Tesla and ChargePoint. Furthermore, the commercialization of the battery is still several years away, with management expecting testing to begin in 2023 and a full launch in 2025. Investors should be aware that QuantumScape doesn't yet have a product and that buying the stock is a bet that promises turn into real results in the future.\nHere's the bottom line\nThe automotive industry is collectively worth more than $2 trillion and could someday be fully electric. The opportunity for huge returns is there for investors, just like the internet in its earliest days. But just like the dot-com boom, investors need to be careful to identify the leaders of EV technology and not get caught up with the pretenders that never amount to much.\nWith Tesla, ChargePoint, and QuantumScape, investors have exposure to EVs, the infrastructure beneath them, and a high-upside leap forward in battery technology. These are potentially impactful companies that could end up being the titans of an electric automotive industry over the long haul.\nBut just like the internet in its early days, electric vehicles are a new industry with elevated risk. Tesla has proven the most of these three companies, but all three, to a degree, are pricing in the future success that the underlying businesses haven't yet delivered on. Investors can benefit from these stocks but will need to remain vigilant in seeing that the management teams behind each come through on their promises.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":528,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":889195753,"gmtCreate":1631113049672,"gmtModify":1676530472539,"author":{"id":"3577759236192678","authorId":"3577759236192678","name":"JudLee","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/839d5ec5e5f0826f3a6d5f19ec16ee58","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3577759236192678","authorIdStr":"3577759236192678"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$NVIDIA Corp(NVDA)$why dropping???","listText":"$NVIDIA Corp(NVDA)$why dropping???","text":"$NVIDIA Corp(NVDA)$why dropping???","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9446b85eb269123a17d2e048aa0817ca","width":"1080","height":"1920"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/889195753","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":255,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":880802498,"gmtCreate":1631028423614,"gmtModify":1676530448176,"author":{"id":"3577759236192678","authorId":"3577759236192678","name":"JudLee","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/839d5ec5e5f0826f3a6d5f19ec16ee58","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3577759236192678","authorIdStr":"3577759236192678"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Tesla Motors(TSLA)$to the moon!!!","listText":"$Tesla Motors(TSLA)$to the moon!!!","text":"$Tesla Motors(TSLA)$to the moon!!!","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4902444182d5d450bccbdec36a4ccc29","width":"1080","height":"1920"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/880802498","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":149,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":815202566,"gmtCreate":1630678669655,"gmtModify":1676530374660,"author":{"id":"3577759236192678","authorId":"3577759236192678","name":"JudLee","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/839d5ec5e5f0826f3a6d5f19ec16ee58","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3577759236192678","authorIdStr":"3577759236192678"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Beyondspring Inc(BYSI)$so what's the earnings release?","listText":"$Beyondspring Inc(BYSI)$so what's the earnings release?","text":"$Beyondspring Inc(BYSI)$so what's the earnings release?","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/65f0a5d370108ba5c13981b6b088e962","width":"1080","height":"1920"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":1,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/815202566","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":315,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":812645429,"gmtCreate":1630587173461,"gmtModify":1676530347883,"author":{"id":"3577759236192678","authorId":"3577759236192678","name":"JudLee","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/839d5ec5e5f0826f3a6d5f19ec16ee58","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3577759236192678","authorIdStr":"3577759236192678"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Beyondspring Inc(BYSI)$go go go ?? It’s a clinical-stage company developing recombinant (rDNA) vaccines. It has a focus on Covid-19. And its stock has seen some wild, meme stock-style action in 2021, highlighted by a one-week period that saw VXRT stock spike 161% then plunge back below its starting point.
\n
What sets Vaxart apart from most of the biotech companies it competes with is syringes. More correctly, a lack of syringes. Instead of a needle, Vaxart’s vaccines are delivered in pill form.
\n
While VXRT stock experienced massive price fluctuations through the first 5 months of the year, since early May it has been stable with a recovery that is slowing gaining steam. Currently trading near $9, shares are up 40% from the start of the year. Vaxart hasn’t yet landed an approved Covid vaccine. But the Delta variant is proving that vaccination is likely to be an ongoing effort, meaning there is still opportunity there.
\n
Vaxart has other oral vaccines in the pipeline including versions for norovirus and influenza. So is now the time to hop on the VXRT bandwagon?
\n
There’s Vaccine Hesitancy, But There’s Also Needle Hesitancy
\n
One of the central arguments to the Vaxart approach is that a lot of people strongly dislike needles. They can cause pain and extreme stress.
\n
Dr. C. Meghan McMurtry is an associate professor of psychology at Canada’s University of Guelph. She wrote in theNew York Times: “About one in four adults and two out of three children have some fear of needles, and adults may find their fears too shameful to share. This is a substantial public health problem, because a body of research shows that around one in 10 adults are so afraid of needles that they will delay or avoid vaccinations.”
\n
Delaying or avoiding vaccination is prolonging the pandemic. Not all vaccine refusers are avoiding the shot because they fear needles. But a substantial number are. And with children under 12 the next big age group that remains to be vaccinated in the U.S., fear of needles is a serious issue.
\n
Even once the pandemic is under control, it appears that mutations like Delta will mean ongoing booster shots are required. Fear of needles will be a problem for the foreseeable issue.
\n
That is a huge opportunity for Vaxart. Success with its oral Covid-19 vaccine — which recently received Food and Drug Administration approval to begin phase II clinical trials— would be a huge catalyst for VXRT stock.
\n
Oral Vaccines Have a Practical Application As Well
\n
Catering to a group that avoids needles is one thing. However, there are also a practical reasons for developing an oral Covid-19 vaccine.
\n
The Covid-19 vaccines released to date have had very stringent temperature requirements for transportation and storage, some requiring specialized freezers. That was a challenge at first in parts of North America, but in areas of the world like Africa where temperatures are extreme and infrastructure often lacking, this becomes a big problem. In addition, there have been shortages of syringes and of people trained to administer needles.
\n
With an oral vaccination — a pill — these issues go away. Vaxart says its tablets are stable at room temperature, eliminating the challenges with transportation and storage. In addition, there is no special equipment or specialized training needed at clinics where the pills would be distributed.
\n
Bottom Line on VXRT Stock
\n
Will Vaxart achieve the Holy Grail of a pill-based rDNA vaccine for Covid-19? If the company manages to pull it off, early February’s $23.33 close will likely end up looking like a practice run for VXRT stock. With the vaccine candidate just scheduled to enter phase II clinical trials in the second half of the year, patience is required.
\n
ThisPortfolio GraderB-rated stock is not without risk. It’s a clinical-stage company developing recombinant (rDNA) vaccines. It has a focus on Covid-19. And its stock has seen some wild, meme stock-style action in 2021, highlighted by a one-week period that saw VXRT stock spike 161% then plunge back below its starting point.\nWhat sets Vaxart apart from most of the biotech companies it competes with is syringes. More correctly, a lack of syringes. Instead of a needle, Vaxart’s vaccines are delivered in pill form.\nWhile VXRT stock experienced massive price fluctuations through the first 5 months of the year, since early May it has been stable with a recovery that is slowing gaining steam. Currently trading near $9, shares are up 40% from the start of the year. Vaxart hasn’t yet landed an approved Covid vaccine. But the Delta variant is proving that vaccination is likely to be an ongoing effort, meaning there is still opportunity there.\nVaxart has other oral vaccines in the pipeline including versions for norovirus and influenza. So is now the time to hop on the VXRT bandwagon?\nThere’s Vaccine Hesitancy, But There’s Also Needle Hesitancy\nOne of the central arguments to the Vaxart approach is that a lot of people strongly dislike needles. They can cause pain and extreme stress.\nDr. C. Meghan McMurtry is an associate professor of psychology at Canada’s University of Guelph. She wrote in theNew York Times: “About one in four adults and two out of three children have some fear of needles, and adults may find their fears too shameful to share. This is a substantial public health problem, because a body of research shows that around one in 10 adults are so afraid of needles that they will delay or avoid vaccinations.”\nDelaying or avoiding vaccination is prolonging the pandemic. Not all vaccine refusers are avoiding the shot because they fear needles. But a substantial number are. And with children under 12 the next big age group that remains to be vaccinated in the U.S., fear of needles is a serious issue.\nEven once the pandemic is under control, it appears that mutations like Delta will mean ongoing booster shots are required. Fear of needles will be a problem for the foreseeable issue.\nThat is a huge opportunity for Vaxart. Success with its oral Covid-19 vaccine — which recently received Food and Drug Administration approval to begin phase II clinical trials— would be a huge catalyst for VXRT stock.\nOral Vaccines Have a Practical Application As Well\nCatering to a group that avoids needles is one thing. However, there are also a practical reasons for developing an oral Covid-19 vaccine.\nThe Covid-19 vaccines released to date have had very stringent temperature requirements for transportation and storage, some requiring specialized freezers. That was a challenge at first in parts of North America, but in areas of the world like Africa where temperatures are extreme and infrastructure often lacking, this becomes a big problem. In addition, there have been shortages of syringes and of people trained to administer needles.\nWith an oral vaccination — a pill — these issues go away. Vaxart says its tablets are stable at room temperature, eliminating the challenges with transportation and storage. In addition, there is no special equipment or specialized training needed at clinics where the pills would be distributed.\nBottom Line on VXRT Stock\nWill Vaxart achieve the Holy Grail of a pill-based rDNA vaccine for Covid-19? If the company manages to pull it off, early February’s $23.33 close will likely end up looking like a practice run for VXRT stock. With the vaccine candidate just scheduled to enter phase II clinical trials in the second half of the year, patience is required.\nThisPortfolio GraderB-rated stock is not without risk. Vaccine candidates fail during testing all the time, and underwhelming phase I trial results sank VXRT in February. However, its stock price has stabilized and is trending in the right direction. And in its latest quarter, Vaxart reported it still has$198.9 million in cash and equivalents to keep the lights on while it waits for its oral Covid-19 vaccine to work its way through clinical trials.\nRemember, even if the company doesn’t succeed on the Covid-19 front, the company has other oral vaccine candidates in various stages of development in the pipeline.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":159,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":811673108,"gmtCreate":1630322240404,"gmtModify":1676530268016,"author":{"id":"3577759236192678","authorId":"3577759236192678","name":"JudLee","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/839d5ec5e5f0826f3a6d5f19ec16ee58","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3577759236192678","authorIdStr":"3577759236192678"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"<a Fool","summary":"The electric vehicle industry could be huge, and investors should consider different ways to benefit from its growth.","content":"
The \"dot-com\" bubble is one of the most famous periods in stock market history.
These are potentially impactful companies that could end up being the titans of an electric automotive industry over the long haul.
\n
But just like the internet in its early days, electric vehicles are a new industry with elevated risk. Tesla has proven the most of these three companies, but all three, to a degree, are pricing in the future success that the underlying businesses haven't yet delivered on. Investors can benefit from these stocks but will need to remain vigilant in seeing that the management teams behind each come through on their promises.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
3 Top Electric Vehicle Stocks to Buy for the Long Haul
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n3 Top Electric Vehicle Stocks to Buy for the Long Haul\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-09-09 10:35 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
The \"dot-com\" bubble is one of the most famous periods in stock market history. Investors can benefit from these stocks but will need to remain vigilant in seeing that the management teams behind each come through on their promises.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":528,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":889791000,"gmtCreate":1631176215400,"gmtModify":1676530487738,"author":{"id":"3577759236192678","authorId":"3577759236192678","name":"JudLee","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/839d5ec5e5f0826f3a6d5f19ec16ee58","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3577759236192678","authorIdStr":"3577759236192678"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Go go go!!!","listText":"Go go go!!!","text":"Go go go!!!","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":6,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/889791000","repostId":"1152471596","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1152471596","kind":"news","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Providing stock market headlines, business news, financials and earnings ","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Tiger Newspress","id":"1079075236","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8274c5b9d4c2852bfb1c4d6ce16c68ba"},"pubTimestamp":1631174613,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1152471596?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-09-09 16:03","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Support jumped 3% in premarket trading","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1152471596","media":"Tiger Newspress","summary":"(Sept 9) Support.com jumped 3% in premarket trading after it surged 20% yesterday.","content":"
(Sept 9) Support.com jumped 3% in premarket trading after it surged 20% yesterday.
\n

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; As has been the case for most of the past year, Buffett was active in the financial sector, mostly reducing Berkshire Hathaway's positions in banks. At the company's annual investor day earlier this month, Buffett provided some explanation for all the stock selling he's done in that sector.
\n
\"I like banks generally,\" he said, \"I just didn't like the proportion we had compared to the possible risk if we got the bad results that so far we haven't gotten.\"
\n
Let's review the three big changes Buffett and Berkshire Hathaway made to their bank holdings in the first quarter.
\n
\n
1. All but eliminating Wells Fargo
\n
Everyone knew it was coming, but Buffett all but made it official last quarter, nearly eliminating his position in his onetime favorite bank, Wells Fargo (NYSE:WFC). Berkshire Hathaway sold 51.7 million shares, dropping its stake to a mere 675,000 shares valued at $26.3 million.
\n
This essentially ends what was an epic run for the Oracle of Omaha and Wells Fargo. Buffett first purchased shares in the large U.S. bank in 1989, and by 1994, he had acquired more than 13% of its outstanding shares. At the end of the third quarter of 2019, before the pandemic, Buffett's stake, which had a rough original cost basis of just below $9 billion, was worth close to $20 billion. And at one point back in 2017, it was reportedly worth as much as $29 billion.
\n
But as the fallout of Wells Fargo's phony accounts scandal and other revelations about its consumer abuses continued to play out, Buffett began to lose faith in the institution and started trimming his position. It looks like Buffett ultimately ended up making much less on his Wells Fargo investment than he could have, considering he sold more than 323 million shares between the end of Q1 2020 and the end of Q1 2021. During that 12-month period, the bank's shares traded from a low of $21.45 to a high of $39.07. At the end of 2019, they traded north of $53.
\n
The stock closed at $45.73 on Thursday, and many investors still believe Wells Fargo is undervalued these days, trading at 135% tangible book value (equity minus intangible assets and goodwill). Bank valuations have shot up in recent months, and Wells Fargo in particular could see more tailwinds when the Federal Reserve lifts the $1.95 trillion asset cap that the bank has been operating under since 2018.
\n
2. Dumping Synchrony Financial
\n
Last quarter, Berkshire Hathaway also eliminated its entire stake in the consumer finance credit card company Synchrony Financial (NYSE:SYF), selling its 21.1 million shares. Synchrony uses what it calls a \"partner-centric\" business model under which it teams up with leading retailers and digital brands that promote Synchrony's credit cards. Consumers can get deals on specific purchases by opening Synchrony credit cards, which are often branded under a retailer's name.
\n
While I wouldn't say I saw this move coming, it doesn't entirely surprise me. Over the last year, Buffett has become even more selective about which banks he wants to own. He seems to be picking a winner or two in each banking industry subcategory -- for instance, he sold his stake in America's largest bank, JPMorgan Chase, and loaded up on America's second-largest bank, Bank of America.
\n
Considering that Buffett already has a huge position in American Express, and loves the brand, that is likely going to be his pick for a credit-card-focused holding. Berkshire Hathaway likely made a good profit on that Synchrony investment, though, considering that the stock hit its highest level ever during Q1.
\n
3. Trimming U.S. Bancorp again
\n
Berkshire Hathaway also sold about 1.45 million shares of U.S. Bancorp (NYSE:USB) in the first quarter -- but it still owns nearly 129.7 million shares. The Oracle of Omaha has sold small quantities of shares of the Minnesota-based regional bank a few times over the last year, and it's a bit unclear why. It does appear that he has made U.S. Bancorp his regional bank pick, though. He sold off his other regional bank holdings, including his stakes in PNC Financial Services Group and M&T Bank, in the fourth quarter of 2020.
\n
One possible explanation relates to Buffett's well-known desire to keep his stakes in those banks below 10%, so he can avoid the additional reporting requirements that a higher ownership level would trigger. At the end of the first quarter, Buffett owned about 8.7% of U.S. Bancorp's outstanding shares. So his stock sale may have simply been a move to prepare for the bank's planned share repurchases, which should accelerate later this year. As has been the case for most of the past year, Buffett was active in the financial sector, mostly reducing Berkshire Hathaway's positions in banks. At the company's annual investor day earlier this month, Buffett provided some explanation for all the stock selling he's done in that sector.\n\"I like banks generally,\" he said, \"I just didn't like the proportion we had compared to the possible risk if we got the bad results that so far we haven't gotten.\"\nLet's review the three big changes Buffett and Berkshire Hathaway made to their bank holdings in the first quarter.\nImage source: Getty Images.\n1. All but eliminating Wells Fargo\nEveryone knew it was coming, but Buffett all but made it official last quarter, nearly eliminating his position in his onetime favorite bank, Wells Fargo (NYSE:WFC). Berkshire Hathaway sold 51.7 million shares, dropping its stake to a mere 675,000 shares valued at $26.3 million.\nThis essentially ends what was an epic run for the Oracle of Omaha and Wells Fargo. And at one point back in 2017, it was reportedly worth as much as $29 billion.\nBut as the fallout of Wells Fargo's phony accounts scandal and other revelations about its consumer abuses continued to play out, Buffett began to lose faith in the institution and started trimming his position. At the end of 2019, they traded north of $53.\nThe stock closed at $45.73 on Thursday, and many investors still believe Wells Fargo is undervalued these days, trading at 135% tangible book value (equity minus intangible assets and goodwill). Bank valuations have shot up in recent months, and Wells Fargo in particular could see more tailwinds when the Federal Reserve lifts the $1.95 trillion asset cap that the bank has been operating under since 2018.\n2. Dumping Synchrony Financial\nLast quarter, Berkshire Hathaway also eliminated its entire stake in the consumer finance credit card company Synchrony Financial (NYSE:SYF), selling its 21.1 million shares. Synchrony uses what it calls a \"partner-centric\" business model under which it teams up with leading retailers and digital brands that promote Synchrony's credit cards. Consumers can get deals on specific purchases by opening Synchrony credit cards, which are often branded under a retailer's name.\nWhile I wouldn't say I saw this move coming, it doesn't entirely surprise me. Over the last year, Buffett has become even more selective about which banks he wants to own. He seems to be picking a winner or two in each banking industry subcategory -- for instance, he sold his stake in America's largest bank, JPMorgan Chase, and loaded up on America's second-largest bank, Bank of America.\nConsidering that Buffett already has a huge position in American Express, and loves the brand, that is likely going to be his pick for a credit-card-focused holding. Berkshire Hathaway likely made a good profit on that Synchrony investment, though, considering that the stock hit its highest level ever during Q1.\n3. Trimming U.S. Bancorp again\nBerkshire Hathaway also sold about 1.45 million shares of U.S. \nOne possible explanation relates to Buffett's well-known desire to keep his stakes in those banks below 10%, so he can avoid the additional reporting requirements that a higher ownership level would trigger. At the end of the first quarter, Buffett owned about 8.7% of U.S. Bancorp's outstanding shares. So his stock sale may have simply been a move to prepare for the bank's planned share repurchases, which should accelerate later this year. Last quarter's adjustment should maintain Berkshire Hathaway's stake at a level comfortably under the 10% threshold, even after U.S. Bancorp's total share count is reduced. \nOverall, I still feel confident that Buffett plans to stick with U.S. Bancorp, although I will continue to watch his moves in upcoming quarters to see if he further reduces his stake in it.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":287,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":170549592,"gmtCreate":1626443946116,"gmtModify":1703760306576,"author":{"id":"3577759236192678","authorId":"3577759236192678","name":"JudLee","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/839d5ec5e5f0826f3a6d5f19ec16ee58","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3577759236192678","authorIdStr":"3577759236192678"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"<a Here’s What History Says Happens Next.","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1141615218","media":"Barrons","summary":"Tesla stock continued its recent winning streak Tuesday, by the slimmest of margins—shares inched up","content":"
Tesla stock continued its recent winning streak Tuesday, by the slimmest of margins—shares inched up just 7 cents. It’s very rare Tesla stock does nothing. And when it does nothing, it is actually a good sign for investors.
\n
Tesla (ticker: TSLA) stock closed at $709.75, up 0.0099%. The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average both closed up about 0.8%. Tesla stock has risen for five consecutive trading sessions, adding 10.1%.
\n
Better than expected earnings appear to have catalyzed the jump. Shares dipped the day after reporting second-quarter numbers, but quickly recovered and have been higher since the July 28 report.
\n
Wednesday could mean more gains for Tesla shareholders.Barron’sfound Tesla stock has moved less than 0.1%, up or down 9 times since the start of 2019—including Tuesday. It happens once every 70-or-so trading days. Six of the eight times prior to Tuesday, shares rose the following day by an average of 1.8%. The S&P 500 was flat, on average, on those days.
\n
Predicting one-day stock performance based on a prior day, frankly, isn’t great analysis. But Tesla, as ever, is a special case that gets endless scrutiny from Wall Street analysts, investors, and the press.
\n
And Tuesday was a slow news day for the world’s most valuable car company. Piper Sandler analyst Alexander Potter reviewed second-quarter numbers and Tesla’s quarterly filing in a research report, but not much changed.
\n
“Bottom line: We still really like this stock,” wrote Potter. He points out that Tesla is the number one EV brand in the U.S., the number two brand in China, and the number two brand in Europe. It’s very rare Tesla stock does nothing. And when it does nothing, it is actually a good sign for investors.\nTesla (ticker: TSLA) stock closed at $709.75, up 0.0099%. The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average both closed up about 0.8%. Tesla stock has risen for five consecutive trading sessions, adding 10.1%.\nBetter than expected earnings appear to have catalyzed the jump. Shares dipped the day after reporting second-quarter numbers, but quickly recovered and have been higher since the July 28 report.\nWednesday could mean more gains for Tesla shareholders.Barron’sfound Tesla stock has moved less than 0.1%, up or down 9 times since the start of 2019—including Tuesday. It happens once every 70-or-so trading days. Six of the eight times prior to Tuesday, shares rose the following day by an average of 1.8%. The S&P 500 was flat, on average, on those days.\nPredicting one-day stock performance based on a prior day, frankly, isn’t great analysis. But Tesla, as ever, is a special case that gets endless scrutiny from Wall Street analysts, investors, and the press.\nAnd Tuesday was a slow news day for the world’s most valuable car company. Piper Sandler analyst Alexander Potter reviewed second-quarter numbers and Tesla’s quarterly filing in a research report, but not much changed.\n“Bottom line: We still really like this stock,” wrote Potter. He points out that Tesla is the number one EV brand in the U.S., the number two brand in China, and the number two brand in Europe. Potter maintained his Buy-rating and $1,200 price target—the highest target price on Wall Street.\nLooking at one-day performance trends is also an opportunity to remind investors that the chance a stock rises or falls on a given day is a little better than a coin flip—a 50/50 bet. Now looks like a good time to buy a few growth stocks with great potential.","content":"
If you're a tech investor, you've probably seen some red in your portfolio recently. Fears over inflation have sparked a sell-off, dragging many growth stocks down in the process. Of course, it's natural to panic, but that's not very productive.
\n
Instead, think of this as a buying opportunity. For instance, Cloudflare (NYSE:NET) and Shopify (NYSE:SHOP) have each fallen over 20% from their 52-week highs, but both look like good long-term investments. Here's why you should consider buying these two growth stocks on the dip.
\n
1. Cloudflare: Cloud computing
\n
Cloudflare is a cloud services provider that makes the internet faster, more reliable, and more secure. Its global network spans 200 cities, and supports nearly 17% of the internet as of April 2021, according to W3Techs. Those are incredible statistics, but they mean more in context. So let's look at a recent product launch.
\n
\n
Traditionally, corporations have taken a castle-and-moat approach to networks: All resources were stored on-site, all employees worked in the office, and all incoming and outgoing connections were filtered through central hardware (e.g. firewall boxes, internet gateways). But this model is no longer efficient or effective, since more employees are working remotely and more enterprises rely on cloud computing.
\n
In 2020, Cloudflare launched Cloudflare for Teams to solve this problem. This product is built around Cloudflare Access and Cloudflare Gateway, enabling employees to securely access corporate resources and the open internet whether they are in the office or working remotely.
\n
Moreover, Cloudflare's global network offers performance at a scale that would be impossible for most enterprises to achieve on their own. It also eliminates the need for costly on-site hardware. Put another way, Cloudflare for Teams is faster and cheaper than legacy network security solutions.
\n
Beyond this example, Cloudflare offers a range of other products -- everything from serverless computing to streaming video platforms -- all of which are designed to enhance performance and security.
\n
In total, management believes the company's market opportunity will grow at 9% per year, rising from $72 billion in 2020 to $100 billion by 2024. But Cloudflare's revenue is growing much faster, meaning the company is gaining market share.
\n
\n
\n
\n

Metric

\n

2017

\n

Q1 2021 (TTM)

\n

CAGR

\n
\n
\n
\n
\n

Customers

\n

49,309

\n

119,206

\n

31%

\n
\n
\n

Revenue

\n

$135 million

\n

$478 million

\n

48%

\n
\n
\n
\n
Data source: Cloudflare SEC filings. The company faces competition from legacy providers like Akamai and public cloud titans like Amazon Web Services. However, Cloudflare is currently growing more quickly than both. That's why this growth stock is a buy for long-term investors.
\n
2. Shopify: E-commerce
\n
Creating an e-commerce website is complicated, especially if you're not a software developer. And managing a business is even more complicated since you need a way to process payments, manage inventory, fulfill and ship orders, and run ad campaigns.
\n
Shopify removes all of this complexity, simplifying commerce. Using its software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform, anyone can easily build an online storefront and manage a business across physical and digital locations.
\n
\n
Not surprisingly, Shopify's business has grown at an incredible pace as e-commerce has gained traction around the world. In 2016 the company had 377,500 customers, but that figure double by 2018 and doubled again by 2020, reaching 1.7 million.
\n
At the same time, Shopify has seen strong adoption of its payment processing and shipping services. In 2016 Shopify Payments handled 39% of gross merchandise volume (GMV), but that figure hit 45% in 2020. Likewise, less than 40% of U.S. and Canadian merchants used Shopify Shipping in 2018, but that figure hit 52% in 2020.
\n
Here's the takeaway: Shopify's quickly growing customer base has powered soaring subscription sales, but increasing adoption of Shopify Payments and Shopify Shipping has driven even faster sales growth in merchant solutions.
\n
\n
\n
\n

Shopify Revenue

\n

2016

\n

2020

\n

CAGR

\n
\n
\n
\n
\n

Subscription

\n

$188.6 million

\n

$908.8 million

\n

48%

\n
\n
\n

Merchant Solutions

\n

$200.7 million

\n

$2.0 billion

\n

78%

\n
\n
\n

Total

\n

$389.3 million

\n

$2.9 billion

\n

66%

\n
\n
\n
\n
Data source: Shopify SEC filings. In total, Q1 revenue came in at $989 million -- more than double its full-year revenue in 2016.
\n
This supercharged financial performance can't last forever, but even as growth slows, I believe Shopify will be an important player in the e-commerce industry for decades to come.
