a vicious downtrend that has plagued the year.

On Friday, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite closed out a three-quarter losing streak for the first time since the 2008 Global Financial Crisis. The Dow Jones Industrial Average also posted a third-straight losing quarter, its first such time since 2015.

At 269 days and counting, the benchmark S&P 500 is now in its longest correction, peak to trough, since March 2009, according to figures from Compound Advisors’ Charlie Bilello. The current 8-month bear market is the longest since 2007-2009’s downturn, with the average length of a bear market since 1929 standing at 14 months.

A survey by the American Association of Individual Investors showed 60% of retail investors hold a bearish view of the stock market, the highest level since 2008 and the eighth most pessimistic reading in the 35 years the survey has been conducted.

The Labor Department’s September employment data is set for release at 8:30 a.m. ET on Friday morning. Economists expect nonfarm payrolls rose by 250,000 last month, per consensus estimates from Bloomberg. If realized, the figure would mark an anticipated moderation for Federal Reserve policymakers trying to tamp down the labor market in their battle against inflation – but not enough for officials to scale back on their rate hiking plans.

Strong labor market readings have stoked worries that Fed officials will stay on path with aggressive rate hikes and over tighten monetary conditions. And while strategists anticipated the impact of rate hikes showing up in employment data, figures have so far surprised to the upside. On Thursday, Labor Department data showed initial jobless claims slid to 193,000, the lowest since April, for the week that ended on Sept. 24.

Analysts at Bank of America said in a Friday note they expect strong payroll growth to continue, with indicators of labor market activity — like initial jobless claims and the Conference Board's labor market differential — that feed into the institutions projections remaining red-hot since August’s report.

“Investors are hunting for confirmation bias that inflation is abating but strong jobs data has dashed all hopes,” Thornburg Investment Management portfolio manager Sean Sun said in emailed commentary.

“While there are some signs of disinflation out there, the strong jobless claims data is as if the Fed is trying to step on the brakes of a car that still hurtling downhill at a steep angle,” Sun added. “Investors shouldn't ask if the Fed will pivot, but rather how deep into the recession we'll find ourselves before they finally act.”

Other labor market readings due out through Friday include the ADP’s employment report, which measures levels of non-farm private employment, the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS), and the Challenger Job-Cut report, which offers information on the number of tracked corporate layoffs by industry and region.

Elsewhere in economic releases on the docket this week are ISM manufacturing and services data, construction spending figures, and a reading on total vehicle sales.

The corporate calendar will be light before a new earnings season gets underway, but some notable names on the docket include Constellation Brands (STZ), Levi Strauss (LEVI), and McCormick (MKC).

After a brutal September — worse for the Dow than even September 2008 — some Wall Street optimists look ahead to October, which based on seasonal trends has been dubbed a “bear-market killer” due to historically strong returns, especially in midterm election years. Every time the S&P 500 has dropped 7% or more in September, stocks have done well in October, Carson Group’s Ryan Detrick noted.

However, even if markets get a reprieve, a high-stakes earnings season is likely to prove any bounce fleeting, with analysts rushing to slash their year-end forecasts amid worsening fundamentals tied to persistent inflation, rising interest rates, and slowing growth.

“Now I think for us it’s not about inflation and central banks; it’s about earnings,” Luca Paolini, chief strategist at Pictet Asset Management, told Yahoo Finance Live. “The focus will be on earnings because we’re going from a moderation shock, with higher interest rates, to a growth shock. This is where we feel more worried, and next earnings season is going to be really critical.”

—

Economic Calendar

Monday: S&P Global U.S. Manufacturing PMI, September final (51.8 expected, 51.8 during prior month); Every time the S&P 500 has dropped 7% or more in September, stocks have done well in October, Carson Group’s Ryan Detrick noted. However, even if markets get a reprieve, a high-stakes earnings season is likely to prove any bounce fleeting, with analysts rushing to slash their year-end forecasts amid worsening fundamentals tied to persistent inflation, rising interest rates, and slowing growth.“Now I think for us it’s not about inflation and central banks; it’s about earnings,” Luca Paolini, chief strategist at Pictet Asset Management, told Yahoo Finance Live. “The focus will be on earnings because we’re going from a moderation shock, with higher interest rates, to a growth shock. This is where we feel more worried, and next earnings season is going to be really critical.”—Economic CalendarMonday: S&P Global U.S. Manufacturing PMI, September final (51.8 expected, 51.8 during prior month); Apparently, they were quite discouraged by what they heard, as Powell restated the Fed's determination to push interest rates as high as they needed to go in order to ensure that inflationary pressures don't become permanently entrenched in the U.S. economy. For those who had hoped for a more dovish response, that was bad news, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average ended the day down more than a thousand points. Percentage drops for the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite were also in the 3% to 4% range.

Among large-cap stocks, there were only a handful of gainers as most share prices followed the broader market lower. Some now fear that the rebound that the market saw from mid-June to about a week ago may well prove to have been only a bear market rally, with today's downward move reestablishing a bearish trend that could take market indexes far lower.

There's no way to predict short-term price movements in the stock market. However, efforts to fight inflation, if successful, should result in better long-term results for investors than if the Fed simply backed off and allowed higher price trends to become a permanent feature of the U.S. economy.

Stubborn inflation

The big question still facing investors is whether inflation has peaked. Many of those watching economic data were pleased to see the upward moves in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and the Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index (PCE) start to moderate recently. However, just because inflation has stopped accelerating doesn't mean that it's under control.

The latest numbers from the Bureau of Economic Analysis on the PCE tell the story well. The headline number that most people emphasized was that the price index fell 0.1% in July, with goods prices falling 0.4%.

However, looking more closely at what goes into the PCE price index gives a more complete picture. Much of the downward pressure on the index came from a 7.7% drop in the sub-index for gasoline and other energy goods. That by itself was enough to send nondurable goods prices down half a percent, even as food and beverage prices jumped 1.3% month over month.

Some other key components showed continued rises. Housing and utility costs were up 0.6% for the month, extending their gain over the past 12 months to 7%.

Perhaps most importantly, even larger declines in a single month wouldn't by themselves reverse adverse trends. Energy costs are still more than 45% higher than they were this time last year. Food and beverages are up nearly 12% year over year, and even when you exclude food and energy, core PCE prices are up 4.6% since July 2021 -- more than double the 2% target that the Fed pursues.

Is a recession worth long-term prosperity?

Investors worry that a prolonged set of interest-rate increases from the Fed will push the economy into recession and restrain business activity. If that view from the Fed was unexpectedly hawkish, then it could leave stock market participants facing downward revisions on earnings estimates that could send stock prices lower once again.

In the long run, though, the impact of inflation on stock prices historically has been more difficult to overcome than short-term business cycle fluctuations. When you look back at recent bouts of inflation in the 1970s and early 1980s, for instance, you'll notice significant volatility in stock markets that led to subpar returns. Only when inflationary pressures were resolved did solid bull markets result, and the long bull markets of the 1990s, mid-2000s, and 2010s all came in economic environments with little or no inflation.

It's indeed possible that a central bank with tight monetary policy might bring short-term pain to the stock market and an end to what might materialize as a bear market rally. However, I believe investors will be happier with this outcome in the long run than they would be with sustained inflation and the complications that come with it.

","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Did the Fed Kill the Bear Market Rally?
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nDid the Fed Kill the Bear Market Rally?\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-08-27 11:38 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Market participants have been concerned for weeks about what Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell might say at the central bank's annual symposium in Jackson Hole. However, I believe investors will be happier with this outcome in the long run than they would be with sustained inflation and the complications that come with it.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":447,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9025425897,"gmtCreate":1653724115019,"gmtModify":1676535333877,"author":{"id":"3577827252347863","authorId":"3577827252347863","name":"Jazel","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/013a9e8713ed6b1aefedad980fe82466","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3577827252347863","idStr":"3577827252347863"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Okayyyy ","listText":"Okayyyy ","text":"Okayyyy","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9025425897","repostId":"2238290956","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":507,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9089417461,"gmtCreate":1650020981394,"gmtModify":1676534630373,"author":{"id":"3577827252347863","authorId":"3577827252347863","name":"Jazel","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/013a9e8713ed6b1aefedad980fe82466","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3577827252347863","idStr":"3577827252347863"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Okay","listText":"Okay","text":"Okay","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":7,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9089417461","repostId":"1137462158","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1137462158","pubTimestamp":1650036589,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1137462158?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-04-15 23:29","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Twitter Stock Could Crash 20%, Here’s Why","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1137462158","media":"InvestorPlace","summary":"Investors in social media platform Twitter have seen some pretty impressive volatility play out.
