The firm bet that shares of GameStop would tumble but was battered when retail investors took the other side and sent the stock surging.</p><p>The firm had $12.5 billion in assets at the start of 2021.</p><p>In the letter Plotkin said he had already raised a substantial amount of cash and cut the funds&#39; exposure.</p><p>A spokesman for Plotkin declined to comment.</p><p>At the end of the first quarter Melvin&#39;s biggest investments included bets on <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/LYV\">Live Nation Entertainment</a> , Hilton Worldwide Holdings, Amazon and <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/DDOG\">Datadog</a>. Their stock prices have fallen sharply in the last weeks, sparking speculation that a hedge fund might be trying to unwind positions.</p><p>Plotkin was a star investor at Steven A. Cohen&#39;s hedge fund SAC Capital Advisors and launched his own firm after SAC pleaded guilty to criminal insider trading charges. In the event of inflation, the <b>Federal Reserve</b> is now making moves to drain that liquidity from the system. According to a Blackrock analyst, “The Ukraine war, a global energy shock and the risk the Fed tries to fight the supply-driven inflation have sparked a reassessment of macro scenarios among market participants.”</p><p>This means that the market will eventually need to reassess GameStop on a fundamental basis. In other words, looking at the business, assessing cash flows and all of the other boring stuff we seem to have forgotten how to do. In that case, GameStop isn’t faring that well.</p><p>Videogame sales decreased year-over-year for the fifth straight month in March. Compared to the same time in 2021, overall sales were 15% lower. This trend could continue to accelerate as higher prices pinch consumers’ discretionary spending budgets.</p><p>Remember that GME stock was trading at around $5 prior to 2021’s legendary short squeeze. With the boost from the pandemic long gone, last month video game industry sales were down 15% year-over-year.</p><p>This points to the company reporting worse-than-expected top and bottom line results. A weakening video game market also bodes badly for its e-commerce plans. If it becomes more apparent that cooling video game demand will affect its digital transformation efforts? It may become harder for GameStop to sustain its triple-digit stock price.</p><p>Once again, shares could fall back below the $100 per share mark. Put simply, a continued downward slide isn’t fully dependent on more market volatility. The company currently generates most of its revenue from beef-alternative products. And the stock trades at a very expensive valuation. Therefore, it needs to grow sales at a high rate.
