However, it&#39;s worth noting that the company&#39;s factories and focused capacity for the Model S/X/3 are effectively done. The company could ramp up the Model Y or other future projects, however, it shows the company sees demand for other vehicles as peaked.</p><p>An example of this can be seen on Tesla&#39;s website. The cheapest Model 3 has an estimated delivery date of Aug-Nov 2022. The top end has a Jun-Aug 2022 delivery date. The top end Model Y is Jul-Sep 2022. The company&#39;s backlog has decreased substantially from its prior backlogs, and especially with the potential for a weaker market, we see that weakness continuing.</p><p>With competition increasing significantly, we view Tesla&#39;s volume ramp as slowing down. It&#39;s telling that the company doesn&#39;t have any new factories planned for its Model 3/S/X.</p><p>Tesla Energy Storage/Alternatives</p><p>Tesla has numerous alternative businesses including energy storage and other alternative businesses.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c143000d4559bfef8336756f8721db1d\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"307\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Tesla Alternative Businesses - Tesla Investor Presentation</p><p>The company&#39;s energy storage business is the bright spot in its alternatives business. The company has seen deployments increase 90% YoY. However, the company does have some risks to the business here. First, energy storage is a worse use of capital from a profit perspective versus building cars. Tesla itself has admitted that before.</p><p>That means that as long as there&#39;s volume demand for the company&#39;s cars, the company&#39;s energy storage will take a back seat. Second is the company&#39;s solar business. We&#39;ve discussed this before, but this business is negligible. It&#39;s decreasing in size, has a single-digit market share and no competitive advantage.</p><p>Tesla Insurance</p><p>Another development for Tesla is the company&#39;s announcement that it&#39;s launching an insurance business.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/50de3780f98ffea0bd1f72d3395fe103\" tg-width=\"900\" tg-height=\"684\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Insurance Underwriting Results - PMR Law</p><p>Insurance isn&#39;t a high profit margin business. It relies on the generation of the float and the potential investments of the float to generate returns. A substantial insurance business can take advantage of a continuous float to invest and generate long-term returns without a significant negative impact to that float.</p><p>The takeaway here is that insurance companies operate off of scale. Travelers is the 10th largest insurance company in the world, insures more than 2 million vehicles. Even with 100% of U.S. Tesla owners getting insurance through Tesla, the company won&#39;t reach that number. More so, even if it did, the insurance business would only be valued at a few billion $ based on peers.</p><p>Warren Buffett whose Berkshire Hathaway owns GEICOrecently commented they don&#39;t expect Tesla to outperform here, given their data is mostly the same as the current insurers. Here, we believe the opposite is true. Not only will Tesla not outperform but the company could lose money or, in the event of a mistake, hurt a brand. We see three unique downsides for the company.</p><p>(1) Multi-line discount. Most major insurers offer to bundle home insurance with multiple cars, home insurance, umbrella insurance, etc. Tesla can&#39;t offer those discounts to customers meaning that offering competitively priced insurance will be more difficult.</p><p>(2) Reputation. It&#39;s no secret that Americans hate their insurance providers. Unfortunately, the premise of maximizing profits for the insurer is different from maximizing profits for the insuree. And oftentimes those competing interests come to clash at a tough time. Tesla will need to outperform its customers because of the reputational risk.</p><p>Someone who has a bad experience with Tesla insurance might leave Tesla overall. No one buys a different car because they dislike Progressive.</p><p>(3) Start Up Cost. Insurance is a crowded market without a high barrier to entry. However, Tesla will be spending substantial money to startup and join the industry. The company will be spending cost with no guarantee of returns, which is a risk for the company&#39;s future shareholder returns.</p><p>Tesla and Tech, A Unique Downside</p><p>We want to take the opportunity to highlight what we see as a unique risk for Tesla. The company is a massively popular car among tech industry employees. The carmaker has a &gt;10% market share in California versus a 2% market share in the United States. It&#39;s well known in the hub of the technology industry how popular the company&#39;s cars are.</p><p>However, we see this as a unique potential downside for Tesla. The company&#39;s cheapest cars clock in at 2x the cheapest car from the traditional low-cost manufacturers (Honda and Toyota) as the company has struggled to meet expectations. Even versus luxury manufacturers such as BMW and Mercedes, the company&#39;s cheapest car is more expensive.</p><p>More so, the tech industry has suffered. After leading the bull market for the last 5 years, the market is now down roughly 25%. Given Tesla&#39;s unique positioning to tech industry employees, we expect the downturn will hurt the demand for the company&#39;s products, especially higher end products.</p><p>Tesla Isn&#39;t Recession Proof</p><p>Tesla has reasonably strong cash and cash equivalents at roughly $18 billion. However, the car industry is incredibly capitally intensive, and losses ramp up significantly during a market downturn.</p><p>Through the 2008 recession, U.S.carmakers lost $10s of billions. Capitol obligations can be difficult to avoid in the industry with factories needing to be kept running because the cost of shutting them off is even more expensive. However, that doesn&#39;t mean that they&#39;re making a profit. Tesla hasn&#39;t actually had to face a market downturn yet.</p><p>We expect there are two factors here that will again make Tesla less likely to survive a recession.</p><p>(1) People cut spending during a recession. Tesla is effectively a luxury brand at its pricing. In 2008, Toyota outperformed. During an upcoming recession, we expect Tesla to similarly underperform in line with luxury brands. They also might be less willing to try the uncertainty of an electric vehicle.</p><p>(2) Capital growth. Tesla is focused on growing substantially, and as we saw above, has numerous factories that it&#39;s planning to build. Those capital obligations without production could cause the company to have higher losses than companies only maintaining existing factories. That risk is worth paying close attention to.</p><p><b>Thesis Risk</b></p><p>The largest risk to our thesis is that Tesla is a unique company that has a proven ability to outperform. The company, in many ways, defined electric vehicles as a segment, especially luxury vehicles, and the company&#39;s competitors have struggled to compete. There&#39;s no guarantee that the company can&#39;t continue increasing market share and returns.</p><p>Conclusion</p><p>Tesla is now 40% below its 52-week highs. The company&#39;s weakness was exacerbated by Elon Musk&#39;s ownership and his pledging of the company&#39;s stock against his Twitter acquisition. That sell-off accelerated as a result of the general technology sell-off in the markets. Despite this underperformance, we see that as just the start.</p><p>The company is showing peak demand with no additional factories planned for the Model S/X/3. Most vehicle purchases can see delivery with is shorter delays than other manufacturers&#39; vehicles such as Toyota&#39;s RAV4. We also view the company&#39;s position in the tech markets as a unique risk to its business model. Here, we believe the opposite is true. Not only will Tesla not outperform but the company could lose money or, in the event of a mistake, hurt a brand. We see three unique downsides for the company.(1) Multi-line discount. Most major insurers offer to bundle home insurance with multiple cars, home insurance, umbrella insurance, etc. Tesla can't offer those discounts to customers meaning that offering competitively priced insurance will be more difficult.(2) Reputation. It's no secret that Americans hate their insurance providers. Unfortunately, the premise of maximizing profits for the insurer is different from maximizing profits for the insuree. And oftentimes those competing interests come to clash at a tough time. Tesla will need to outperform its customers because of the reputational risk.Someone who has a bad experience with Tesla insurance might leave Tesla overall. No one buys a different car because they dislike Progressive.(3) Start Up Cost. Insurance is a crowded market without a high barrier to entry. However, Tesla will be spending substantial money to startup and join the industry. The company will be spending cost with no guarantee of returns, which is a risk for the company's future shareholder returns.Tesla and Tech, A Unique DownsideWe want to take the opportunity to highlight what we see as a unique risk for Tesla. The company is a massively popular car among tech industry employees. The carmaker has a >10% market share in California versus a 2% market share in the United States. It's well known in the hub of the technology industry how popular the company's cars are.However, we see this as a unique potential downside for Tesla. The company's cheapest cars clock in at 2x the cheapest car from the traditional low-cost manufacturers (Honda and Toyota) as the company has struggled to meet expectations. Even versus luxury manufacturers such as BMW and Mercedes, the company's cheapest car is more expensive.More so, the tech industry has suffered. After leading the bull market for the last 5 years, the market is now down roughly 25%. Given Tesla's unique positioning to tech industry employees, we expect the downturn will hurt the demand for the company's products, especially higher end products.Tesla Isn't Recession ProofTesla has reasonably strong cash and cash equivalents at roughly $18 billion. However, the car industry is incredibly capitally intensive, and losses ramp up significantly during a market downturn.Through the 2008 recession, U.S.carmakers lost $10s of billions. Capitol obligations can be difficult to avoid in the industry with factories needing to be kept running because the cost of shutting them off is even more expensive. However, that doesn't mean that they're making a profit. Tesla hasn't actually had to face a market downturn yet.We expect there are two factors here that will again make Tesla less likely to survive a recession.(1) People cut spending during a recession. Tesla is effectively a luxury brand at its pricing. In 2008, Toyota outperformed. During an upcoming recession, we expect Tesla to similarly underperform in line with luxury brands. They also might be less willing to try the uncertainty of an electric vehicle.(2) Capital growth. Tesla is focused on growing substantially, and as we saw above, has numerous factories that it's planning to build. Those capital obligations without production could cause the company to have higher losses than companies only maintaining existing factories. That risk is worth paying close attention to.Thesis RiskThe largest risk to our thesis is that Tesla is a unique company that has a proven ability to outperform. The company, in many ways, defined electric vehicles as a segment, especially luxury vehicles, and the company's competitors have struggled to compete. There's no guarantee that the company can't continue increasing market share and returns.ConclusionTesla is now 40% below its 52-week highs. The company's weakness was exacerbated by Elon Musk's ownership and his pledging of the company's stock against his Twitter acquisition. That sell-off accelerated as a result of the general technology sell-off in the markets. Despite this underperformance, we see that as just the start.The company is showing peak demand with no additional factories planned for the Model S/X/3. Most vehicle purchases can see delivery with is shorter delays than other manufacturers' vehicles such as Toyota's RAV4. We also view the company's position in the tech markets as a unique risk to its business model. Auto revenues were 87% ahead of a year earlier. But they were just 5% ahead of the previous quarter.</p><p>Bulls think Tesla is <b>Apple</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>AAPL</u></b>), that it has the market sewn up. They say there will be haves and have-nots in the new tech market and Tesla will be one of the haves. They see continuing supply chain worries and assume Tesla will surmount them while rivals won’t.</p><p>Tesla has taught its industry many lessons, but the lessons are being learned. Buy a <b>Toyota</b>(NYSE:<b><u>TM</u></b>) today and you’ll be faced with a host of services aimed at tying you to the brand. For car dealers, service and support are where the money is. Even <b>General Motors</b>(NYSE:<b><u>GM</u></b>) has learned that you build your full line off one platform to keep costs down and focus on battery supply.</p><p>Despite Tesla’s pretensions, in other words, it’s a car company. No car company is worth 18 times its revenue.</p><p>The Great Replacement</p><p>A walk around my middle-class neighborhood tells the story. The “Great Replacement” today isn’t people quitting their jobs. It’s replacing America’s gas-guzzling fleet with EVs.</p><p>Tesla made the big jump look cool. We have two Teslas on my block. But for most people it’s still a question of small steps. That’s why I recently became the fifth homeowner on my street to buy a Toyota hybrid. It cuts my gas use in half, but I don’t have to worry about finding a plug in the middle of West Virginia. It also cost half what a Tesla costs.</p><p>Cars with plugs, like Tesla, still represent just 5% of the U.S. car market. Hybrids are where the growth is in today’s mass market, which is dominated by Japanese, Korean and Chinese names.</p><p>Tesla’s market share in China is falling. In Europe, <b>Volkswagen</b>(OTCMKTS:<b><u>VWAGY</u></b>) and <b>Stellantis</b>(NYSE:<b><u>STLA</u></b>) now have bigger shares of the plug-in market.</p><p>The Bottom Line on TSLA Stock</p><p>Bulls look at CEO Elon Musk’s effort to buy <b>Twitter</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>TWTR</u></b>) and worry that might distract him. They even bought Tesla when it seemed he might back off the Twitter purchase.</p><p>The Twitter saga tells me Musk is bored. Tesla is being run by car guys. The great strategic cut-and-thrust is mostly over. He wants to do something else. So don’t buy or sell Tesla stock based on Musk.</p><p>Look at the fundamentals. In the near term, they’re great, but you’re overpaying. One of his mantras was &#34;You have to take profits to make profits.&#34; The meaning behind this is the fact it&#39;s all &#34;unrealized&#34; paper gains until you actually sell the security and transfer the proceeds into your checking account and/or into another investment. Further, he was very disciplined regarding when profits should be taken and why. Fortunately, I fell in love with my Tesla position and have held it way longer than my father ever would have, making it one of my most lucrative investments. Nevertheless, I endured several drawdowns over the years. Now, with Musk buying Twitter (TWTR) by pledging an additional $45 billion worth of Tesla shares, I have decided to take profits and sit this one out amongst other reasons. Let me explain.</p><p><b>Musk&#39;s highly leveraged Tesla position increases risk</b></p><p>Elon is buying a majority of Twitter by taking out a $49 billion margin loan against his Tesla shares. He already has pledged a substantial amount of Tesla shares previously, bringing his margin total to $89 billion. Further, Musk is the first lienholder on the Twitter position. He is on the hook for essentially the first $33 billion of Twitter, if by some chance they can&#39;t pay the bills.</p><p>Musk has already stated it&#39;s not about the money to him, so that doesn&#39;t necessarily give me a nice warm fuzzy feeling about the prospects. Further, if for some unforeseen reason Tesla shares fall and Musk gets a margin call, that would be a major debacle. It has happened before. Nearly 10 years ago to the day, Green Mountain Coffee Roasters demoted its founder and chairman, Robert Stiller, and its lead director, William Davis, after the high-flying coffee company&#39;s share-price plunged forced the men into emergency stock sales resulting from margin calls. In fact, many companies have banned the practice at this point. Now, this is definitely a &#34;backburner&#34; type issue as Musk is constantly receiving new shares and options, yet it is there in the back of my mind. Further, I really don&#39;t find the new Cybertruck appealing. I like Ford&#39;s F150 Lightning pickup, which leads me to my next point.</p><p><b>The competition has finally arrived</b></p><p>The Ford F150 Lightning is now officially in production. I have done my research on the truck and I love it. Ford CEO Jim Farley said on Monday:</p><blockquote><i>The company is not joking around by saying the electric F-150 lightning could be as big a product for the automaker as the Model T back in 1908.</i></blockquote><p>I would have to agree. Ford plans to scale production of the F-150 Lightning even faster than competitors, with plans to boost manufacturing of the Lightning at a plant in Dearborn to 150,000 units in the next year, up from an initial target of 40,000 vehicles.</p><p>What&#39;s more, Ford has secured the lithium-ion batteries needed to meet its expected level of production of 150,000 units next year. Moreover, the company plans to prioritize supplies of semiconductor chips toward the F-150 Lightning.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c42cd5b5effe20ffbbd01bed01c0e3bc\" tg-width=\"617\" tg-height=\"389\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Ford F150 Lightning Pickup (Ford website)</span></p><p>The response has been so overwhelming, Ford is no longer taking retail reservations at this time. Additionally, Ford isn&#39;t the only competition. As I&#39;m sure you are aware, there is a plethora of new EV vehicle entrants into the race. The primary reason I&#39;ve chosen to switch from Tesla to Ford is the product. Secondarily, is valuation. Let me explain.</p><p><b>Two completely different animals when it comes to valuation</b></p><p>Tesla trades at 16 times sales while Ford currently trading at 0.47 times sales. Basically, making Ford the Rodney Dangerfield of EV players – “Ford don&#39;t get no respect!” Ha! Now, Tesla may very well deserve its elevated valuation based on its growth rate trajectory and the value of said future cash flows. Nonetheless, under the current Federal Reserve regime, the value of these future cash flows may be diminished greatly by inflation and increased interest rates. I am making a conscious effort to reduce my exposure to &#34;long-duration assets.&#34; Let me explain why Ford presents a better opportunity under current conditions.</p><p><b>Ford significantly undervalued</b></p><p>First of all, Ford is basically trading for a song at the present valuation. Ford&#39;s forward P/E of 6.57 is just over a third of the current S&amp;P 500 Forward P/E of 19.44. The stock is trading for 1.2 times book of $12.14. If ever there was a bargain basement buying opportunity in Ford, this is it.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1ecd5be52cd449328e56f792ebe9ad27\" tg-width=\"467\" tg-height=\"134\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Ford Fundamentals (Finviz)</span></p><p>On top of this, management has done an excellent job of cleaning up the balance sheet. The company maintains a fortress balance sheet with $11.63 per share in cash alone. This helps me not just sleep well, but sleep like a baby at night. Furthermore, the stock has sold off substantially since the start of the year and appears to me to be at an inflection point.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5faca498ac9117d6d6aebc61f4c22dea\" tg-width=\"278\" tg-height=\"389\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Ford 2022 Performance (Finviz)</span></p><p>With the stock trading for rock bottom pricing and having the weak hands thoroughly shaken out over the last few months by the insipid macro environment, I suggest now is an excellent time to start a position heading into earnings. One of my top investing mentors, Sir John Templeton&#39;s quote of &#34;Buy at the point of maximum pessimism&#34; seems quite apropos. The market just experienced a 7 to 1 advance/decline trading day today with 7 stocks down for every 1 stock up. This qualifies as a substantial washout in my book. The baby has definitely been thrown out with the bath water in my book. Furthermore, the Ford CEO Jim Farley is a salesman extraordinaire.</p><p><b>Ford CEO Jim Farley is special</b></p><p>Ford&#39;s CEO Jim Farley has personality for days and is extremely competitive. His statement that the Ford F150 Lightning will be bigger than the model T is the proof in the pudding of what I say. Not to mention the electrifying Ford Mustang Mach-E which definitely lives up to the hype.</p><p>Farley has captured the attention of all, rivaling the likes of P.T. Barnum in some ways, much like his famous cousin Chris Farley of Saturday Night Live, who I absolutely adored. Yet, don&#39;t get me wrong, he has the wherewithal and business acumen to back it up. His career in automobiles was inspired by his grandfather who began working for Ford in 1914. I have faith that Farley will be able to present the best case for the company on the upcoming earnings call. Ford is due to report earnings on April 27th after the close.</p><p><b>Ford Earnings Preview</b></p><p>The following table details Ford&#39;s expected earnings estimates.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2b5856ccd7559c4442c6cfac6efae3d8\" tg-width=\"617\" tg-height=\"242\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Seeking Alpha</span></p><p>You can see that there have been six downward revisions over the last 90 days. With the stock down significantly going into earnings and expectations diminished, I see the company beating estimates and rising. Even so, the real focus will be on guidance, which has already &#34;quasi&#34; been announced with them revealing they will produce 150,000 F150 Lightning pickups rather than the original 40,000. I am expecting Ford to pop on earnings. This is why I made the move to sell Tesla and buy Ford ahead of the announcement. Nonetheless, I have only bought one-third of the position in order to reduce risk. In these situations where I have a positive outlook on earnings, I will divide the buys into thirds. One-third before earnings to gain a foothold, one-third after earnings, and one-third in reserve to buy on any future potential weakness. I always suggest layering into new positions over time to reduce risk. Even so, adding Twitter to his endeavors in addition to Tesla, SpaceX, Starlink, The Boring Company, and any others I may have forgotten, I think he may be reaching his limit. Further, he definitely has maxed out his Tesla margin credit card at this point, which gives me pause. Yet, the primary factor that sealed the deal for me was what I believe is Ford&#39;s superior product, the F150 Lightning, which I plan to buy as soon as available. On top of this, Ford&#39;s conservative valuation was a major selling point as well. The valuation factor is of particular import to me based on the recent change in the Federal Reserve&#39;s regime, from Dove to Hawk. And finally, I made this move in order to cash in and &#34;realize&#34; the substantial gains I had with my long-term Tesla position. I have held it in a tax advantaged account, so the capital gains created were not an issue for me. I bring this up because this transaction is particular to my unique situation. The company&#39;s cheapest cars clock in at 2x the cheapest car from the traditional low-cost manufacturers (Honda and Toyota) as the company has struggled to meet expectations. After leading the bull market for the last 5 years, the market is now down roughly 25%. Capitol obligations can be difficult to avoid in the industry with factories needing to be kept running because the cost of shutting them off is even more expensive.
