Since then, GME has lost an additional 23% of its value. It<span> fell to about $12 per share before bouncing in its December short squeeze. The stock continues to be famous for speculative traders, hoping it will rebound to its past heights. However, it is also a significant target for short-sellers, particularly hedge funds, which look to the company's inability to adapt to a changing gaming market.</span></p> <p>Much has changed for GameStop since I covered it last. The company has dramatically slowed its cash burn rate through aggressive cost cuts, improving its life expectancy. At the same time, many see that as a bullish factor, it does little to improve its long-term profit potential. In my view, the company<span> has no clear path to sufficient profitability to justify its current valuation. That said, GameStop has made material positive improvements since I covered it last, potentially making it a dangerous short-squeeze bet.</span></p> <h2>GameStop's Balance Sheet Has Value</h2> <p>There are two aspects we must consider with GameStop. One is its outdated business model, which will likely continue to face falling revenue without dramatic improvement. In my view, this front is still lacking, indicating low potential for high future incomes. The second aspect is its balance sheet, which could be leveraged through investments to prolong its life or give it some enduring income from alternative investments. Its healthy balance sheet could potentially allow it to transition toward other, more effective business models.</p> <p>Ironically, GameStop's survival today primarily results from the immense short interest in the stock in 2020. It was a significant target by short-sellers, given its lack of working capital and negative cash flows at the time. However, as retail speculators bought the stock, they squeezed short positions out, causing an immense buying spree that caused GameStop to be worth far more than it ever had been despite its terrible fundamentals. The firm then sold immense equity to raise cash at a high valuation, dramatically improving its working capital. See below:</p> <p><figure><img height=\"366\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https://static.seekingalpha.com/uploads/2024/2/11/saupload_a33986df7dc246e9d79d449ec605affd.png\" width=\"635\"/><figcaption>Data by YCharts</figcaption></figure></p> <p>When I covered GME last, it seemed unlikely the firm would manage to slow its working capital losses. This is the net of its current assets and current liabilities. When the figure crosses below zero, GameStop's bankruptcy chance will be much higher; however, not before then. This considerable capital infusion also reduced its debt and increased short-term investments. Now that interest rates are higher, the company is making a decent income from interest in its cash. See below:</p> <p><figure><img height=\"366\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https://static.seekingalpha.com/uploads/2024/2/11/saupload_a497ea41f71018bc929c8045bb5de013.png\" width=\"635\"/><figcaption>Data by YCharts</figcaption></figure></p> <p>While GameStop's income and valuation are problematic, it has one of the cleanest balance sheets I've seen. Its debt is negligible, its liquidity remains ample, and it benefits from high interest rates by earning a decent income from its liquidity. Theoretically, GameStop could seize all operations and act as an investment vehicle. Still, in that case, GME should be worth little more than its current tangible book value per share of ~$4.1.</p> <h2>GameStop in An Operational Hole</h2> <p>Since I last covered GameStop, the firm has done little to change its operational focus besides moving back out of the angles it tried to take, such as NFTs. The company also offers relatively little guidance on this topic, having very short investor calls and no presentations. However, as discussed in its last brief call, GameStop's CEO focuses primarily on aggressive cost-cutting to make its existing business model more robust.</p> <p>This approach works out somewhat, as its substantial operating losses are much lower. Still, its sales trend is negative, mainly if we account for the inflationary backdrop since 2020. See below:</p> <p><figure><img height=\"366\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https://static.seekingalpha.com/uploads/2024/2/11/saupload_4ec94ae5bcce6424d1c7bb5d57b58724.png\" width=\"635\"/><figcaption>Data by YCharts</figcaption></figure></p> <p>Since last year, GameStop has dramatically reduced its operating margin losses by reducing its SG&amp;A expenses and COGS. On a TTM basis, it is nearly earning an operating profit. However, if its sales continue to decline, it will be hard for the firm to continue to cut salaries and marketing costs proportionally, potentially making this a short-term benefit. The company has also dramatically cut CapEx spending, improving its cash stability, but again showing its lack of transition potential.</p> <p>The gaming industry is dominated by online sales, particularly with the rise of Microsoft's (MSFT) cloud gaming platform. The company used to earn a good profit off of selling new and used gaming discs, but that has quickly become a relic of ages past as new platforms will have no disc drives. GameStop is earning some with digital sales, but that is difficult due to immense competition from other third parties and Microsoft and Sony (SONY). As this transition is completed, GameStop's revenue should continue to decline unless made up for in other categories.</p> <p>The company's hardware sales are also still notable. Still, they are not as profitable, considering Walmart (WMT), Best Buy (BBY), and Amazon (AMZN) naturally have better supply chains or superior store sizes that make this endeavor more suitable. Since GameStop is not dominant in online hardware sales and its stores are smaller, it has a material disadvantage in the hardware market. This segment may have some enduring value, but as hardware prices rise or consumer demand slows, it should lose any edge because of its lack of economic scale compared to competitors.</p> <p>Collectibles are its smallest sales category, accounting for 16% of 2022 sales, but may have the best enduring value. This was an area where the firm saw solid growth and is likely a higher margin segment where its business model should have a natural competitive advantage. That said, it only earned around $177M in sales from this category as of Q3 23, and that figure slid around 15% YoY through the quarter.</p> <p>Overall, hardware appears to be its primary focus for potential profits and revenues today, but that segment has the most significant cyclical and competitive risks. The collectible's focus is interesting and could have some long-term value, but likely not enough to justify its current valuation.</p> <h2>The Bottom Line</h2> <p>I remain bearish on GME but revise my previous view to state that I do not believe GameStop will necessarily go bankrupt. Without a severe economic crash, it should avoid bankruptcy for long as long as it can manage its current cost cuts. Of course, while its cost cuts have impressively benefited its margins, they will not last if its sales continue to slide since its overall marketing costs will likely not slide proportionately.</p> <p>I believe pre-owned hardware and collectibles may be an area where the company could maintain a long-term edge. However, new hardware and digital games are challenging markets due to competition from companies better suited to earning good margins in those segments. I do not believe its pre-owned hardware and collectibles sales are sufficient to offset the high overhead cost of its physical stores, and certainly not enough to justify its valuation.</p> <p>If the company can keep its liquidity steady, it is worth around $5 per share, a nearly 20% premium to its tangible book value. That small premium represents the probability that its smaller segments could become long-term profit areas, which I doubt due to the scale issues. Given stability in its tangible book value, which is not guaranteed, GME could be discounted if it trades below $4 per share, given that most of that position is cash, earning a good yield.</p> <div></div> <p>I am very bearish on GME, but that is a long-term view. I would not short-sell it today because it is near its support level and is showing <em>some</em> signs of bouncing higher. Short squeeze risk remains high with its 22% short interest, though nothing compared to its squeeze risk in 2020. For the immediate horizon, enough speculators and investors should be attracted to its stabilization and may have unrealistic hopes for its recovery, potentially justifying a bullish view. Since then, GME has lost an additional 23% of its value. It fell to about $12 per share before bouncing in its December short squeeze. The stock continues to be famous for speculative traders, hoping it will rebound to its past heights. However, it is also a significant target for short-sellers, particularly hedge funds, which look to the company's inability to adapt to a changing gaming market. Much has changed for GameStop since I covered it last. The company has dramatically slowed its cash burn rate through aggressive cost cuts, improving its life expectancy. At the same time, many see that as a bullish factor, it does little to improve its long-term profit potential. In my view, the company has no clear path to sufficient profitability to justify its current valuation. That said, GameStop has made material positive improvements since I covered it last, potentially making it a dangerous short-squeeze bet. GameStop's Balance Sheet Has Value There are two aspects we must consider with GameStop. One is its outdated business model, which will likely continue to face falling revenue without dramatic improvement. In my view, this front is still lacking, indicating low potential for high future incomes. The second aspect is its balance sheet, which could be leveraged through investments to prolong its life or give it some enduring income from alternative investments. Its healthy balance sheet could potentially allow it to transition toward other, more effective business models. Ironically, GameStop's survival today primarily results from the immense short interest in the stock in 2020. It was a significant target by short-sellers, given its lack of working capital and negative cash flows at the time. However, as retail speculators bought the stock, they squeezed short positions out, causing an immense buying spree that caused GameStop to be worth far more than it ever had been despite its terrible fundamentals. The firm then sold immense equity to raise cash at a high valuation, dramatically improving its working capital. See below: Data by YCharts When I covered GME last, it seemed unlikely the firm would manage to slow its working capital losses. This is the net of its current assets and current liabilities. When the figure crosses below zero, GameStop's bankruptcy chance will be much higher; however, not before then. This considerable capital infusion also reduced its debt and increased short-term investments. Now that interest rates are higher, the company is making a decent income from interest in its cash. See below: Data by YCharts While GameStop's income and valuation are problematic, it has one of the cleanest balance sheets I've seen. Its debt is negligible, its liquidity remains ample, and it benefits from high interest rates by earning a decent income from its liquidity. Theoretically, GameStop could seize all operations and act as an investment vehicle. Still, in that case, GME should be worth little more than its current tangible book value per share of ~$4.1. GameStop in An Operational Hole Since I last covered GameStop, the firm has done little to change its operational focus besides moving back out of the angles it tried to take, such as NFTs. The company also offers relatively little guidance on this topic, having very short investor calls and no presentations. However, as discussed in its last brief call, GameStop's CEO focuses primarily on aggressive cost-cutting to make its existing business model more robust. This approach works out somewhat, as its substantial operating losses are much lower. Still, its sales trend is negative, mainly if we account for the inflationary backdrop since 2020. See below: Data by YCharts Since last year, GameStop has dramatically reduced its operating margin losses by reducing its SG&A expenses and COGS. On a TTM basis, it is nearly earning an operating profit. However, if its sales continue to decline, it will be hard for the firm to continue to cut salaries and marketing costs proportionally, potentially making this a short-term benefit. The company has also dramatically cut CapEx spending, improving its cash stability, but again showing its lack of transition potential. The gaming industry is dominated by online sales, particularly with the rise of Microsoft's (MSFT) cloud gaming platform. The company used to earn a good profit off of selling new and used gaming discs, but that has quickly become a relic of ages past as new platforms will have no disc drives. GameStop is earning some with digital sales, but that is difficult due to immense competition from other third parties and Microsoft and Sony (SONY). As this transition is completed, GameStop's revenue should continue to decline unless made up for in other categories. The company's hardware sales are also still notable. Still, they are not as profitable, considering Walmart (WMT), Best Buy (BBY), and Amazon (AMZN) naturally have better supply chains or superior store sizes that make this endeavor more suitable. Since GameStop is not dominant in online hardware sales and its stores are smaller, it has a material disadvantage in the hardware market. This segment may have some enduring value, but as hardware prices rise or consumer demand slows, it should lose any edge because of its lack of economic scale compared to competitors. Collectibles are its smallest sales category, accounting for 16% of 2022 sales, but may have the best enduring value. This was an area where the firm saw solid growth and is likely a higher margin segment where its business model should have a natural competitive advantage. That said, it only earned around $177M in sales from this category as of Q3 23, and that figure slid around 15% YoY through the quarter. Overall, hardware appears to be its primary focus for potential profits and revenues today, but that segment has the most significant cyclical and competitive risks. The collectible's focus is interesting and could have some long-term value, but likely not enough to justify its current valuation. The Bottom Line I remain bearish on GME but revise my previous view to state that I do not believe GameStop will necessarily go bankrupt. Without a severe economic crash, it should avoid bankruptcy for long as long as it can manage its current cost cuts. Of course, while its cost cuts have impressively benefited its margins, they will not last if its sales continue to slide since its overall marketing costs will likely not slide proportionately. I believe pre-owned hardware and collectibles may be an area where the company could maintain a long-term edge. However, new hardware and digital games are challenging markets due to competition from companies better suited to earning good margins in those segments. I do not believe its pre-owned hardware and collectibles sales are sufficient to offset the high overhead cost of its physical stores, and certainly not enough to justify its valuation. If the company can keep its liquidity steady, it is worth around $5 per share, a nearly 20% premium to its tangible book value. That small premium represents the probability that its smaller segments could become long-term profit areas, which I doubt due to the scale issues. Given stability in its tangible book value, which is not guaranteed, GME could be discounted if it trades below $4 per share, given that most of that position is cash, earning a good yield.  I am very bearish on GME, but that is a long-term view. I would not short-sell it today because it is near its support level and is showing some signs of bouncing higher. Short squeeze risk remains high with its 22% short interest, though nothing compared to its squeeze risk in 2020. For the immediate horizon, enough speculators and investors should be attracted to its stabilization and may have unrealistic hopes for its recovery, potentially justifying a bullish view. Of course, GME's market cap today is still higher than during its peak era of ~2005 to ~2015, making its current valuation extremely hard to justify The preliminary fourth-quarter report indicates the theater chain is looking at $1.17 billion in revenue, and it even said it will have adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) of between $146.8 million and $151.8 million, operating cash of $215 million, and liquidity of $1.8 billion.</p><p>CEO Adam Aron says it represents &#34;the strongest quarter in two years.&#34;</p><p>The problem is that that&#39;s as good as it gets. It reported net losses much worse than what Wall Street was expecting, and was only able to turn those GAAP losses into adjusted profits mostly by backing out impairments on assets while controlling for interest, depreciation, and amortization. Operationally, AMC is still an ailing company.</p><p>And even on the revenue front, it&#39;s not all that great. The boost to sales was primarily the result of the December release of<i>Spider-man: No Way Home</i>, the massive blockbuster hit that has become one of the 10 best movie releases of all time. This year isn&#39;t shaping up to be much of a repeat.</p><p><b>A dreary lineup of entertainment</b></p><p>So far in 2022, total movie box office is $682 million, 30% of which is a carryover from <i>Spider-man</i>. The next biggest film,<i>Scream</i>, generated only about a third of that, or $77.7 million. That should get your Spidey senses tingling that theater operators are going to have a difficult time replicating their fourth-quarter success.</p><p>Hollywood also isn&#39;t putting out as many movies this year. Only 71 films are slated to debut in theaters in 2022 (thankfully, that includes another<i>Spider-man</i>movie), but streaming services are still as much a viable threat now as they were during the lockdown phase of the pandemic.</p><p>You&#39;re still going to get straight-to-streaming like what <b>Disney</b> is opting to do with Pixar&#39;s <i>Turning Red</i>, sending it straight to Disney+, or using day-and-date releases -- simultaneously releasing into theaters and streaming -- like <b>Comcast</b>&#39;s Universal Pictures did with<i>Marry Me</i>. Zurn rejected a nine-figure settlement that would have let the conversion proceed while handing out extra stock to mitigate the dilution of ordinary shareholders.</p><p>The agreement’s precise value, which is upwards of $100 million, had fluctuated with the company’s stock price. AMC shares were trading at $8.20 as of 4:28 p.m. in New York after closing at $4.40.</p><p>Zurn, writing for Delaware’s Chancery Court, stressed that her ruling didn’t concern the myriad market manipulation theories—&#34;about synthetic shares, Wall Street corruption, dark pool trading, insider trading, and RICO violations&#34;—raised in letters sent to her by nearly 3,000 stockholders.</p><p>“At this juncture, the court’s only task is to approve or reject the proposed settlement,” the judge wrote. “To cut to the chase, the settlement cannot be approved as submitted.”</p><p>The ruling sends the case—and the company, which is anxious to recapitalize—back to the drawing board. AMC has been eager to convert the APEs and issue additional shares as it contends with rising interest rates that have complicated its loan financing.</p><p>Most investors and analysts had expected Zurn to end the bitter legal battle over the APEs—AMC Preferred Equity units—which have been the subject of fierce litigation since February. The case has pitted AMC against many of the amateur investors who participated in the “meme stock” rally that saved the distressed theater chain at the height of the pandemic.</p><p>The company issued the APEs last year, including a 30% bloc to Antara Capital LP, and has been trying to convert them ever since. Each unit represents 1/100th of a preferred share theoretically worth 100 class A shares, so they’re supposed to be equivalent to common stock. But they have tended to trade at a steep discount due to uncertainty about the conversion.</p><p>Roughly 70% of the common stockholders who voted on the original APE conversion plan in March—before the agreement was reached—were in favor, though a relatively small number of them participated. The APEs also supported the proposal by a 9-to-1 margin.</p><p>But many other retail investors either oppose a move that would dilute their shares or just don’t vote on company proposals. More than 2,800 of them wrote to the court to speak against the settlement, and four showed up at the settlement hearing in June—one with counsel—to formally object.</p><p>The shareholder lawsuit, led by a pension fund and individual shareholder, accuses AMC of an illegal corporate engineering scheme aimed at sidelining its investor base. The suit focuses in particular on a “mirror voting” clause requiring a stock depositary company to vote all of the preferred shares proportionately based on the actual APE votes cast.</p><p>That policy, combined with Antara’s 30% vote in favor of the deal, let the company manipulate the outcome, the suit says. The hedge fund—which emerged as a villain in the eyes of many retail investors—has said it’s gotten threatening phone calls from people claiming to be AMC stockholders.</p><p>Bernstein Litowitz Berger &amp; Grossmann LLP, Grant &amp; Eisenhofer PA, Fields Kupka &amp; Shukurov LLP, and Saxena White PA are counsel for the pension fund and investor leading the litigation. AMC is represented by Richards, Layton &amp; Finger PA and Weil, Gotshal &amp; Manges LLP. The retail investors are mostly representing themselves, although one is represented by Halloran Farkas &amp; Kittila LLP.</p><p>The case is In re AMC Ent. Holdings Inc. S’holder Litig., Del. The move has done little to hurt PLTR stock.</p><p>It always amuses me when the business media freak out because some big shot is selling a large number of shares in a particular company. In this instance,<i>Benzinga</i> reported on March 10 that Wood took her holdings in Palantir from well over 30 million shares in February down to zero in approximately 13 trades.</p><p>I say this all the time. Investors of every description sell for many reasons. They buy for one.</p><p>If you own Palantir, do not let Wood’s decision affect your view of the company. In the end, you could be right, and she could be wrong. It happens more often than you think.</p><p>Trust your gut. Do not listen to others. That includes me. Here’s why.</p><table><tbody><tr><td><b>PLTR</b></td><td>Palantir Technologies</td><td>$12.89</td></tr></tbody></table><p><b>PLTR Stock Was Less Than 3% of Ark Invest Assets</b></p><p>Wood’s biggest exchange traded fund (ETF) by assets is the <b>ARK Innovation ETF</b>(NYSEARCA:<b>ARKK</b>). It has a turnover rate of 71%. That’s not high by active standards, but it’s high enough. Stocks are going to get sacrificed in the name of better returns. Clearly, Wood felt there was a better place for the estimated $360 million ($12 x 30 million shares).</p><p>ARKK currently has $12.48 billion in total net assets. That means PLTR accounted for 2.9% of the ETF’s portfolio. So if Wood still held, it would be the 15th largest position. But, of course, we know that some of Wood’s other ETFs held Palantir stock, so it held an even less critical role within Ark Invest.</p><p>According to <i>WhaleWisdom</i>, Ark Invest held 35.3 million shares worth $642.5 million at the end of the fourth quarter. They accounted for 1.95% of the $33.1 billion listed on its latest 13F filing.</p><p>If Wood sold her entire position in <b>Tesla</b>(NASDAQ:<b>TSLA</b>), that would be an entirely different situation. Ark Invest has held TSLA since the fourth quarter of 2016. That’s more than 60 months ago or so. Palantir only becam ea public company 19 months ago. The level of commitment is entirely different.</p><p><b>The Proper Course of Action</b></p><p>My<i>InvestorPlace</i>colleague, Larry Ramer, recently said the following about Wood’s departure from Palantir:</p><blockquote>[F]unds managed by Cathie Wood, who for over a year was by far the most visible cheerleader for the company, have sold all of their PLTR stock. When a stock’s most famous bull throws in the towel on it, most investors are not going to want to own the shares for a long time</blockquote><p>Listen, Wood might have been vocal in her support for Palantir, but that’s her schtick. She gets out in front to support the stocks that she owns. I have no problem with cheerleading. She’s done a great job of defending Tesla over the years.</p><p>However, if you think that Wood holds a candle to Peter Thiel’s commitment to Palantir — he owns almost 164 million shares — you haven’t followed the company’s story very closely.</p><p>Like Wood selling Tesla, Thiel unloading Palantir would be a big deal. But, of course, he owns so much it might take him several years to unwind profitably.</p><p>Regular retail investors should pay little attention to what billionaires and money managers are selling and focus on what they’re buying. That’s what matters.</p><p>PLTR Stock Is a Buy for Those Not Easily Influenced</p><p>I would suggest that Palantir is not a stock you should own if you are influenced by what Cathie Wood is selling. She’s irrelevant to your investment decision.</p><p>Instead, it would be best if you were asking yourself why you bought it in the first place. If your thoughts about the company aren’t much different from when you first acquired its shares, you shouldn’t worry about what Cathie Wood is doing. Her interests are entirely different from yours.</p><p>In my last article about Palantir, I said that Palantir was an excellent long-term buy in the teens. It’s dropped 29 cents in the six weeks since. I don’t believe anything has changed about its business. Its sales are growing, but it needs to scale to profitability. I think it will.</p><p>Maybe Cathie Wood doesn’t and that’s why she sold. Assuming I'm right,&nbsp;<b>BioNTech</b> (NASDAQ:BNTX) should soar if the market crashes.</p>\n<p>A massive market sell-off due to COVID-19 worries would almost certainly light a fire beneath the stocks of the leading vaccine makers. My view is that BioNTech would be <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> of the biggest winners in the group.</p>\n<p>BioNTech and its partner <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/PFE\">Pfizer</a></b> (NYSE:PFE) are already moving forward with plans to test a vaccine that specifically targets the delta variant. That gives the companies a head start. BioNTech is by far the smallest of the companies with COVID-19 vaccines already on the market, which makes its shares more likely to jump higher on a positive catalyst.
