But the market seems to be ignoring the clear signals being sent from management that they are focused on extracting shareholder value. BABA has seen its valuation reset to arguably distressed levels amidst the rising interest rate environment, and management continues to work towards spinning off various business units in order to address the conglomerate discount. This is a company which has net cash and investments equivalent to nearly 60% of the market cap, and trades at around 10x earnings even before accounting for that fact. At this point, any successful execution on spinning out the various business units, starting with its cloud division, is likely to lead to substantial upside - downside scenarios seem to focus on management being unable to accomplish those goals. While risks have not declined for this name, I am increasing my aggression in buying the stock and have made it a core position in my portfolio.</p><h2 id=\"id_2606064959\">BABA Stock Price</h2><p>The valuation reset in the tech sector has led many tech stocks to trade at pre-pandemic levels. The adjustment has been even more severe at BABA as it is still trading at the same levels as it did in 2014 when it came public.</p><p></p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/07a3ec49e5c078d5843384d887ae3538\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"417\"/></p><p>Data by YCharts</p><p></p><p>I last covered BABA in May, where I discussed the potential upside from the proposed spinoffs. The stock has not gone up as expected, as Wall Street has suddenly lost interest in these events that in theory should help realize considerable shareholder value.</p><h2 id=\"id_2652712692\">BABA Stock Key Metrics</h2><p>In its most recent quarter, BABA saw strong growth in most of its various business categories, but overall revenue growth hovered at 2% YOY as its most critical commerce operations declined 3% YOY. The big story was clearly the boost in profitability, as adjusted EBITA grew 60% YOY. This marks the company’s return to a double-digit adjusted EBITDA margin after it dipped to 8% last year.</p><p></p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9db4f895a61ad324ceeab0411fc2d736\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"259\"/></p><p>March 2023 Quarterly Presentation</p><p></p><p>BABA was able to generate such strong growth in adjusted EBITA largely due to its cost reduction initiatives, as it was able to reduce losses substantially at almost every loss-generating unit, as well as boost margins by 500 bps in the core commerce operations.</p><p></p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3400f9b937b5df32d654e53fde1c48eb\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"132\"/></p><p>March 2023 Quarterly Presentation</p><p></p><p>BABA generated $4.7 billion in free cash flow in the quarter, making up 124% of adjusted EBITA. The company spent $1.8 billion repurchasing stock, an arguably modest amount given the extent of the undervaluation and solid free cash flow generation, but still impressive considering that share repurchases are still a newer development for this company.</p><p></p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/427d55b729784c87cd5229041e3eb938\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"145\"/></p><p>March 2023 Quarterly Presentation</p><p></p><p>BABA ended the quarter with $63.4 billion in net cash plus $66 billion in additional equity investments.</p><p></p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e7d0a6b39245a612091118bca0b632c5\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"180\"/></p><p>March 2023 Quarterly Presentation</p><p></p><p>Together, those made up roughly 59% of the market cap. On the conference call, management noted that while the Chinese economy continues to recover following the easing of pandemic restrictions, “consumer confidence and spending power still need further momentum.” Management also noted that there is fierce competition from the various consumption platforms. Such commentary might confuse American investors, given that BABA is often called “The Amazon of China.” But one must remember that the cost of living is much lower in China, making any logistical advantage less relevant as compared to the United States.</p><p>I suspect that many investors are now focused mostly on management’s efforts to split up the business units and spin off as many of them to shareholders. Management reiterated plans to fully spin off the cloud intelligence division and complete a public listing in the next 12 months. Management also noted that their board of directors has approved both Freshippo (BABA’s retail grocery segment) and Cainiao (their logistics groups) to explore an IPO over the next 18 months. BABA owns a 67% equity interest in Cainiao. Management stated that the business reason for splitting up these business units (outside of realizing shareholder value) is that their Taobao and Tmall businesses would no longer have to direct cash to fund those losses, but could instead reinvest in growth.</p><p>Management also reiterated their commitment to share repurchases, disclosing that the company had repurchased another $2.3 billion in ADSs in the 1.5 months subsequent to the quarter. I would caution against extrapolating that management has increased their aggression of the share repurchase program, but it is a good sign to know that this upcoming quarter already has a sizable amount of repurchases executed. With BABA stock being so cheap, management alignment with shareholders is a quality that can not be understated.</p><h2 id=\"id_254510100\">Is BABA Stock A Buy, Sell, or Hold?</h2><p>As of recent prices, BABA was trading hands at just around 10x earnings.</p><p></p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/0cf31a4d871543138bb5f8f77c85adc1\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"81\"/></p><p>Seeking Alpha</p><p></p><p>Yes, that is non-GAAP earnings, but it should be noted that share-based compensation (the most typically protested non-GAAP adjustment) is only around 22% of non-GAAP net income.</p><p></p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/dd94851de8d0c96aa3da8038769bffc0\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"324\"/></p><p>March 2023 Quarterly Presentation</p><p></p><p>As noted previously, BABA has net cash and equity investments making up over 50% of the market cap - this is not reflected in that valuation and reflects additional upside.</p><p>The anticipated spin-offs may create value due to investors beginning to value the company on a sum-of-the-parts basis. When valuing BABA on a price to earnings basis, only China commerce is offering positive value contribution as that is the only segment generating positive net income. If we “zero out” the losses from these other segments (arguably a reasonable decision considering that these segments must have at least positive value), then we would need to adjust earnings by around 25% higher. $22.7 billion in China commerce net income valued at 10x earnings implies $227 billion in equity value from this segment alone.</p><p>Based on a 6x sales multiple for the cloud division (yielding $73 billion in equity value), a $20 billion value for Cainiao (at a 67% equity interest), we arrive at another $86 billion in equity value. If we include only $58 billion in net cash (ignoring the equity investments on the balance sheet) then we arrive at $371 billion in projected value, implying a stock price of $144 per share. That is already suggesting ample upside, and we have neither assigned value to many other proposed spin-offs nor increased the 10x earnings multiple on the China commerce operations.</p><p>What are the key risks? The risks should not be understated. The Chinese government remains a wildcard here, not just due to what kind of negative actions they might do in the future, but also due to the perception of it placed on the valuation. Even if BABA management follows through with these spin-offs, it is possible that the total valuation remains compressed if Wall Street remains concerned about regulatory intervention. I am of the view that the share repurchases go a long way towards helping to improve this sentiment, but the share repurchases admittedly can be increased further, and a dividend might be more efficient at this point. It is also possible that management is unable to execute on the proposed spin-offs, or the spin-offs result in bloated cost structures that somehow come back to become a net negative for the company. There isn’t really a price at which these risks are “priced in” but I see tremendous potential upside for the stock and the near term catalysts are in motion. I rate the stock a buy, but caution that this position requires monitoring (and ideally hedging).</p><p>Editor&#39;s Note: This article discusses one or more securities that do not trade on a major U.S. exchange. But the market seems to be ignoring the clear signals being sent from management that they are focused on extracting shareholder value. BABA has seen its valuation reset to arguably distressed levels amidst the rising interest rate environment, and management continues to work towards spinning off various business units in order to address the conglomerate discount. This is a company which has net cash and investments equivalent to nearly 60% of the market cap, and trades at around 10x earnings even before accounting for that fact. At this point, any successful execution on spinning out the various business units, starting with its cloud division, is likely to lead to substantial upside - downside scenarios seem to focus on management being unable to accomplish those goals. While risks have not declined for this name, I am increasing my aggression in buying the stock and have made it a core position in my portfolio.BABA Stock PriceThe valuation reset in the tech sector has led many tech stocks to trade at pre-pandemic levels. The adjustment has been even more severe at BABA as it is still trading at the same levels as it did in 2014 when it came public.Data by YChartsI last covered BABA in May, where I discussed the potential upside from the proposed spinoffs. The stock has not gone up as expected, as Wall Street has suddenly lost interest in these events that in theory should help realize considerable shareholder value.BABA Stock Key MetricsIn its most recent quarter, BABA saw strong growth in most of its various business categories, but overall revenue growth hovered at 2% YOY as its most critical commerce operations declined 3% YOY. The big story was clearly the boost in profitability, as adjusted EBITA grew 60% YOY. This marks the company’s return to a double-digit adjusted EBITDA margin after it dipped to 8% last year.March 2023 Quarterly PresentationBABA was able to generate such strong growth in adjusted EBITA largely due to its cost reduction initiatives, as it was able to reduce losses substantially at almost every loss-generating unit, as well as boost margins by 500 bps in the core commerce operations.March 2023 Quarterly PresentationBABA generated $4.7 billion in free cash flow in the quarter, making up 124% of adjusted EBITA. The company spent $1.8 billion repurchasing stock, an arguably modest amount given the extent of the undervaluation and solid free cash flow generation, but still impressive considering that share repurchases are still a newer development for this company.March 2023 Quarterly PresentationBABA ended the quarter with $63.4 billion in net cash plus $66 billion in additional equity investments.March 2023 Quarterly PresentationTogether, those made up roughly 59% of the market cap. On the conference call, management noted that while the Chinese economy continues to recover following the easing of pandemic restrictions, “consumer confidence and spending power still need further momentum.” Management also noted that there is fierce competition from the various consumption platforms. Such commentary might confuse American investors, given that BABA is often called “The Amazon of China.” But one must remember that the cost of living is much lower in China, making any logistical advantage less relevant as compared to the United States.I suspect that many investors are now focused mostly on management’s efforts to split up the business units and spin off as many of them to shareholders. Management reiterated plans to fully spin off the cloud intelligence division and complete a public listing in the next 12 months. Management also noted that their board of directors has approved both Freshippo (BABA’s retail grocery segment) and Cainiao (their logistics groups) to explore an IPO over the next 18 months. BABA owns a 67% equity interest in Cainiao. Management stated that the business reason for splitting up these business units (outside of realizing shareholder value) is that their Taobao and Tmall businesses would no longer have to direct cash to fund those losses, but could instead reinvest in growth.Management also reiterated their commitment to share repurchases, disclosing that the company had repurchased another $2.3 billion in ADSs in the 1.5 months subsequent to the quarter. I would caution against extrapolating that management has increased their aggression of the share repurchase program, but it is a good sign to know that this upcoming quarter already has a sizable amount of repurchases executed. With BABA stock being so cheap, management alignment with shareholders is a quality that can not be understated.Is BABA Stock A Buy, Sell, or Hold?As of recent prices, BABA was trading hands at just around 10x earnings.Seeking AlphaYes, that is non-GAAP earnings, but it should be noted that share-based compensation (the most typically protested non-GAAP adjustment) is only around 22% of non-GAAP net income.March 2023 Quarterly PresentationAs noted previously, BABA has net cash and equity investments making up over 50% of the market cap - this is not reflected in that valuation and reflects additional upside.The anticipated spin-offs may create value due to investors beginning to value the company on a sum-of-the-parts basis. When valuing BABA on a price to earnings basis, only China commerce is offering positive value contribution as that is the only segment generating positive net income. If we “zero out” the losses from these other segments (arguably a reasonable decision considering that these segments must have at least positive value), then we would need to adjust earnings by around 25% higher. $22.7 billion in China commerce net income valued at 10x earnings implies $227 billion in equity value from this segment alone.Based on a 6x sales multiple for the cloud division (yielding $73 billion in equity value), a $20 billion value for Cainiao (at a 67% equity interest), we arrive at another $86 billion in equity value. If we include only $58 billion in net cash (ignoring the equity investments on the balance sheet) then we arrive at $371 billion in projected value, implying a stock price of $144 per share. That is already suggesting ample upside, and we have neither assigned value to many other proposed spin-offs nor increased the 10x earnings multiple on the China commerce operations.What are the key risks? The risks should not be understated. The Chinese government remains a wildcard here, not just due to what kind of negative actions they might do in the future, but also due to the perception of it placed on the valuation. Even if BABA management follows through with these spin-offs, it is possible that the total valuation remains compressed if Wall Street remains concerned about regulatory intervention. I am of the view that the share repurchases go a long way towards helping to improve this sentiment, but the share repurchases admittedly can be increased further, and a dividend might be more efficient at this point. It is also possible that management is unable to execute on the proposed spin-offs, or the spin-offs result in bloated cost structures that somehow come back to become a net negative for the company. There isn’t really a price at which these risks are “priced in” but I see tremendous potential upside for the stock and the near term catalysts are in motion. The crypto industry has been rocked by troubled lenders, collapsed currencies, and an end to the easy money policies of the pandemic that fueled a speculative frenzy in financial markets.</p><p>Some $2 trillion has vanished from the market value of cryptocurrencies since late last year, according to data compiled by CoinGecko.</p><p>Retail investors were more apprehensive about cryptocurrencies than their institutional counterparts, with almost a quarter declaring the asset class to be garbage. Professional investors were more open-minded toward digital assets.</p><p>But overall, this sector remains a polarizing one: while some 28% of the overall respondents expressed strong confidence that cryptocurrencies are the future of finance, 20% said they’re worthless.</p><h2>Crypto Anxious</h2><p>Most respondents were at least slightly skeptical about cryptocurrencies</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/95ae6536082b79774191b6ef13a1fc08\" tg-width=\"671\" tg-height=\"358\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>Source: MLIV Pulse Survey running July 5th to 8th. Respondents were asked: &#34;In relation to cryptocurrencies, which of the below best describes your attitude&#34;</span></p><p>Bitcoin has already lost more than two-thirds of its value since hitting nearly $69,000 in November and hasn’t traded as low as $10,000 since September 2020.</p><p>“It’s very easy to be fearful right now, not only in crypto, but generally in the world,” said Jared Madfes, partner at Tribe Capital, a venture capital firm. He said the expectations for a further drop in Bitcoin reflect “people’s inherent fear in the market.”</p><p>The crypto crash is likely to put further pressures on governments to step up regulations of the industry. Such supervision is seen as positive by majority of respondents, since it could improve confidence and lead to broader acceptance among institutional and retail investors.</p><p>Government intervention will also probably be welcomed by consumers burned by the collapse of so-called stablecoin TerraUSD and troubled middlemen like Celsius Network and broker Voyager Digital Ltd.</p><p>Central banks are also considering developing their own digital currencies for use in digital payments.</p><p>But neither the recent price drops -- nor the potential challenge from central banks -- are expected to significantly upend the industry by dethroning the two dominant tokens, Bitcoin and Ether. A majority of respondents anticipate that one of those two will remain a driving force in five years even while a significant share sees central bank digital currencies taking on a key role.</p><p>“Bitcoin still is powering large parts of the cryptoverse, while Ethereum is losing its lead,” said Ed Moya, senior market analyst at Oanda Corp., a foreign-exchange broker.</p><p>There was a broader consensus about one corner of the market: Nonfungible tokens. NFTs became famous for attraction valuations in the millions of dollars for pictures of monkeys during the height of the crypto boom. But the overwhelming majority of those surveyed consider them to be just art projects or status symbols, with only 9% seeing them as an investment opportunity.</p><p>Moreover, those hunting for the next asset-price bubble may do well to look elsewhere, since speculative manias rarely strike the same asset class twice. Workhorse lost 14.9% on the day.</p><p>FireEye&nbsp;rose 1.2% after industry sources identified the cybersecurity firm as among those helping Colonial Pipeline recover from the recent cyberattack.</p><p>Declining issues outnumbered advancing ones on the NYSE by a 1.88-to-1 ratio; LTCM was deemed “too big to fail,” and he engineered a bailout by 14 major U.S. financial institutions.</p>\n<p>Exactly a decade later, too much leverage by some of those very institutions, and the bursting of a U.S. real estate bubble, led to the near collapse of the U.S. financial system. Once again, big banks were deemed too big to fail and taxpayers came to the rescue.</p>\n<p>The trend? Every 10 years or so, and they all look different.&nbsp;Are we in the early stages of a new crisis now, with the blowup at the family office Archegos Capital Management LP?</p>\n<p>A family office, for the uninitiated, is a private wealth management vehicle for the ultra-wealthy. Here’s what I mean by ultra-wealthy: Consulting firm EY estimates there are some 10,000 family offices globally, but manage, says a separate estimate by market research firm Campden Research, nearly $6 trillion. That $6 trillion is likely far higher now given that it’s based on 2019 data.</p>\n<p><b>Unregulated money managers</b></p>\n<p>Here’s the potential danger. Family offices generally aren’t regulated. The 1940 Investment Advisers Act says firms with 15 clients or fewer don’t have to register with the Securities and Exchange Commission. What this means is that trillions of dollars are in play and no one can really say who’s running the money, what it’s invested in, how much leverage is being used, and what kind of counterparty risk may exist. (Counterparty risk is the probability that one party involved in a financial transaction could default on a contractual obligation to someone else.)</p>\n<p>This appears to be the case with Archegos. The firm bet heavily on certain Chinese stocks, including e-commerce player&nbsp;Vipshop Holdings&nbsp;Ltd.VIPS,-1.19%,U.S.-listed Chinese tutoring company&nbsp;GSX Techedu&nbsp;Inc.GSX,-10.63%and U.S. media companiesViacomCBS&nbsp;Inc.VIAC,-3.90%and&nbsp;Discovery&nbsp;Inc.DISCA,-3.86%,among others. Share prices have tumbled lately, sparking large sales — some $30 billion — by Archegos.</p>\n<p>The problem is that only about a third of that, or $10 billion, was its own money. We now know that Archegos worked with some of the biggest names on Wall Street, including&nbsp;Credit Suisse Group AGCS,+1.59%,UBS Group AGUBS,+1.01%,Goldman Sachs Group Inc.GS,-1.25%,&nbsp;Morgan StanleyMS,-0.28%,Deutsche Bank AGDB,+0.74%and Nomura Holdings Inc.&nbsp;NMR,+1.87%.</p>\n<p>But since family offices are largely allowed to operate unregulated, who’s to say how much money is really involved here and what the extent of market risk is? My colleague Mark DeCambre&nbsp;reported last week that Archegos’ true exposures to bad trades could actuallybe closer to $100 billion.</p>\n<p><b>Danger of counterparty risk</b></p>\n<p>This is where counterparty risk comes in. As Archegos’ bets went south, the above banks — looking at losses of their own — hit the firm with margin calls. Deutsche quickly dumped about $4 billion in holdings, while Goldman and Morgan Stanley are also said to have unwound their positions, perhaps limiting their downside.</p>\n<p>So is this a financial crisis? It doesn’t appear to be. Even so, the Securities and Exchange Commission has opened a preliminary investigation into Archegos and its founder, Bill Hwang.</p>\n<p>One peer, Tom Lee, the research chief of Fundstrat Global Advisors, calls Hwang one of the “top 10 of the best investment minds” he knows.</p>\n<p>But federal regulators may have a lesser opinion. In 2012, Hwang’s former hedge fund, Tiger Asia Management, pleaded guilty and paid more than $60 million in penalties after it was accused of trading on illegal tips about Chinese banks. The SEC banned Hwang from managing money on behalf of clients — essentially booting him from the hedge fund industry. So Hwang opened Archegos, and again, family offices aren’t generally aren’t regulated.</p>\n<p><b>Yellen on the case</b></p>\n<p>This issue is on Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen’s radar. She said last week that greater oversight of these private corners of the financial industry is needed. The Financial Stability Oversight Council (FSOC), which she oversees, has revived a task force to help agencies better “share data, identify risks and work to strengthen our financial system.”</p>\n<p>Most financial crises end up with American taxpayers getting stuck with the tab. Gains belong to the risk-takers. But losses — they belong to us. To paraphrase Abe Lincoln, family offices — a multi-trillion dollar industry largely allowed to operate in the shadows in a global financial system that is more intertwined than ever — are of the super-wealthy, by the super-wealthy and for the super-wealthy. And no one else.</p>\n<p>The Archegos collapse may or may not be the beginning of yet another financial crisis. That $6 trillion is likely far higher now given that it’s based on 2019 data.\nUnregulated money managers\nHere’s the potential danger. Family offices generally aren’t regulated. The 1940 Investment Advisers Act says firms with 15 clients or fewer don’t have to register with the Securities and Exchange Commission. What this means is that trillions of dollars are in play and no one can really say who’s running the money, what it’s invested in, how much leverage is being used, and what kind of counterparty risk may exist. (Counterparty risk is the probability that one party involved in a financial transaction could default on a contractual obligation to someone else.)\nThis appears to be the case with Archegos. The firm bet heavily on certain Chinese stocks, including e-commerce player Vipshop Holdings Ltd.VIPS,-1.19%,U.S.-listed Chinese tutoring company GSX Techedu Inc.GSX,-10.63%and U.S. media companiesViacomCBS Inc.VIAC,-3.90%and Discovery Inc.DISCA,-3.86%,among others. Share prices have tumbled lately, sparking large sales — some $30 billion — by Archegos.\nThe problem is that only about a third of that, or $10 billion, was its own money. We now know that Archegos worked with some of the biggest names on Wall Street, including Credit Suisse Group AGCS,+1.59%,UBS Group AGUBS,+1.01%,Goldman Sachs Group Inc.GS,-1.25%, Morgan StanleyMS,-0.28%,Deutsche Bank AGDB,+0.74%and Nomura Holdings Inc. NMR,+1.87%.\nBut since family offices are largely allowed to operate unregulated, who’s to say how much money is really involved here and what the extent of market risk is? My colleague Mark DeCambre reported last week that Archegos’ true exposures to bad trades could actuallybe closer to $100 billion.\nDanger of counterparty risk\nThis is where counterparty risk comes in. As Archegos’ bets went south, the above banks — looking at losses of their own — hit the firm with margin calls. Deutsche quickly dumped about $4 billion in holdings, while Goldman and Morgan Stanley are also said to have unwound their positions, perhaps limiting their downside.\nSo is this a financial crisis? It doesn’t appear to be. Even so, the Securities and Exchange Commission has opened a preliminary investigation into Archegos and its founder, Bill Hwang.\nOne peer, Tom Lee, the research chief of Fundstrat Global Advisors, calls Hwang one of the “top 10 of the best investment minds” he knows.\nBut federal regulators may have a lesser opinion. In 2012, Hwang’s former hedge fund, Tiger Asia Management, pleaded guilty and paid more than $60 million in penalties after it was accused of trading on illegal tips about Chinese banks. The SEC banned Hwang from managing money on behalf of clients — essentially booting him from the hedge fund industry. So Hwang opened Archegos, and again, family offices aren’t generally aren’t regulated.\nYellen on the case\nThis issue is on Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen’s radar. She said last week that greater oversight of these private corners of the financial industry is needed. The Financial Stability Oversight Council (FSOC), which she oversees, has revived a task force to help agencies better “share data, identify risks and work to strengthen our financial system.”\nMost financial crises end up with American taxpayers getting stuck with the tab. Gains belong to the risk-takers. But losses — they belong to us. To paraphrase Abe Lincoln, family offices — a multi-trillion dollar industry largely allowed to operate in the shadows in a global financial system that is more intertwined than ever — are of the super-wealthy, by the super-wealthy and for the super-wealthy. And no one else.\nThe Archegos collapse may or may not be the beginning of yet another financial crisis. Consider that more than&nbsp;$4 billion was wagered&nbsp;on the Super Bowl this past February and you get an idea of how big an industry gambling is in the U.S. And, as people again return to the gambling and entertainment meccas of Las Vegas and Atlantic City, it should benefit MGM Resorts, one of the leading casino and resort companies in the world with operations as far away as Macau, China.</p>\n<p>MGM used the pandemic as an opportunity to reposition and re-brand itself, moving away from gaming in casinos and vacation resort properties and focusing more on&nbsp;sports betting. That shift should help MGM by lessening its reliance on foot traffic at its casinos and as sports at both the collegiate and professional levels return with a vengeance this year.</p>\n<p>MGM stock has been one of the&nbsp;stronger reopening plays&nbsp;this year. Since January, the share price is up a cool 30% at just over $40.</p>\n<p><b>Live Nation Entertainment (LYV)</b></p>\n<p>Live music is a huge business. In 2019, before Covid-19 shut things down, the live music industry generated&nbsp;global revenues&nbsp;(subscription required) of nearly $30 billion. Last year, revenues were a third of that level at just $10 billion worldwide, according to market research firm<i>Statista</i>. This year, live music revenues are expected to be double the 2020 level at $20 billion and are forecast to reach $31 billion by 2024. All of this is great news for Live Nation Entertainment, the Beverly Hills, California-based company that promotes, operates and manages ticket sales for music concerts and other live entertainment events all over the world.</p>\n<p>To be sure, Live Nation had a rough go of it in 2020 as its revenue fell 84% from pre-pandemic levels. The company compensated by implementing $950 million of&nbsp;cost reductions. It also remains bullish on its prospects for this year, noting that 83% of customers with tickets to cancelled shows have opted to hold on to their seats until the events are rescheduled. Only 17% of ticket holders asked for their money back.</p>\n<p>Investors have responded positively to Live Nation’s cost cutting and outlook, pushing LYV stock up 11% year-to-date at $81.82 a share.</p>\n<p><b>AMC Theatres (AMC)</b></p>\n<p>AMC stock has been knocked around a lot this year, pushed up and down by the&nbsp;Reddit trading crowd&nbsp;that apparently finds it amusing to pump-and-dump shares of America’s largest movie theatre chain. Add in a narrowly averted bankruptcy filing and a recent analyst report that put a&nbsp;price target&nbsp;on AMC shares of $0.01, and it’s clear that it has been a challenging time for the Leawood, Kansas-based company that has been credited with popularizing the modern movie-going experience.</p>\n<p>However, despite all the drama, there is reason to be hopeful when it comes to AMC Theatres and the box office. While there have not been many blockbuster movies released in theatres in recent months, the opening of the film“Godzilla vs. Kong”at the start of April gave reason to cheer. The Warner Bros. movie had the best opening weekend for a movie since the Covid-19 pandemic shutdown theatres, raking in $32.2 million in domestic ticket receipts. Worldwide, Godzilla vs. Kong earned $285.4 million during its five-day opening weekend (Wednesday to Sunday).</p>\n<p>AMC stock has been whipsawed this year, but has been holding steady around $9.50 a share since the end of March.</p>\n<p><b>The Walt Disney Company (DIS)</b></p>\n<p>The Walt Disney Company has largely been propped up during the pandemic by the growing strength of its streaming service, Disney+. That the company launched its streaming platform less than six months before the Covid-19 pandemic forced the shut down of the company’s theme parks, cruise lines and resorts all over the world seems now like brilliant planning on the part of the Mouse House. Disney+ has, after all, added more than&nbsp;100 million subscribers&nbsp;since it first launched in the autumn of 2019.</p>\n<p>However, Disney+ remains only one part of the company’s business, albeit a growing part. And now that Covid-19 is in retreat around the world, Disney will&nbsp;reopen its theme parks&nbsp;and attractions this spring and summer that were almost entirely closed throughout last year.</p>\n<p>There’s also the popular Disney cruise line business to restart and new film and television production that will provide new content to Disney’s popular library, adding to properties such as Star Wars, Marvel, Pixar animation and more. All told, Disney should have a very big year in 2021.</p>\n<p>DIS stock has pulled back a bit in recent weeks at $183.15 a share, but it has been&nbsp;taking runs&nbsp;at breaking above $200 a share since mid-February.</p>\n<p><b>Carnival (CCL)</b></p>\n<p>Carnival Cruise Lines is ready to come out of dry dock and take to the seas again. This explains why the Miami, Florida-based company, the world’s largest cruise operator, is lobbying the Center for Disease Control to try and get its cruise ships sailing again.</p>\n<p>At stake is a share of the $16 billion in revenue that is expected to be generated by the cruise line industry this year. How soon Carnival is able to&nbsp;resume operations&nbsp;to destinations such as the Bahamas and Bermuda remains to be seen. But the pent-up demand should put wind in the sails of the company and CCL stock.</p>\n<p>Since the end of January, CCL stock has risen 26% to $27.34 a share. More gains are forecast as the company’s operations and revenues return in earnest later this year. The share price has pulled back from near $30 since the start of April as the company’s immediate prospects remain cloudy. But a bullish case can be made for Carnival as Covid-19 vaccines accelerate and the economy reopens. The medianprice targeton the company’s stock is right around $30 a share, suggesting a small upside from current levels. The high price on the stock is $41 per share.</p>\n<p><b>Simon Property Group (SPG)</b></p>\n<p>The shopping mall isn’t dead. Not yet anyway. While we’ve all increased our online shopping over the past year, people are itching to get out of their houses and go back to their favorite stores. Beyond that though, shopping malls are not just places where people go to shop. They are also where people meet to socialize with friends and families, grab a bite to eat and maybe see a movie. And this all bodes well for&nbsp;Simon Property, the largest shopping mall operator in the United States.</p>\n<p>With the economy in full recovery mode and a new round of $1,400&nbsp;stimulus checks&nbsp;landing in consumers’ bank accounts, retail stores and shopping malls are sure to benefit. The&nbsp;National Retail Federation forecasts that&nbsp;retail sales will grow&nbsp;nearly 10% this year to more than $4.30 trillion as consumer spending rebounds strongly from its pandemic lows.</p>\n<p>This optimistic forecast is reflected in SPG stock, which is up 36% year-to-date at $114.17 a share.</p>\n<p><b>Southwest Airlines (LUV)</b></p>\n<p>How will everyone get to their vacation destinations and travel to see friends and family in the coming months when the country reopens? Southwest Airlines, that’s how. The top U.S. airline for leisure travel is guaranteed to benefit from the reopening of the economy and pent-up travel demand. All told, Disney should have a very big year in 2021.\nDIS stock has pulled back a bit in recent weeks at $183.15 a share, but it has been taking runs at breaking above $200 a share since mid-February.\nCarnival (CCL)\nCarnival Cruise Lines is ready to come out of dry dock and take to the seas again. This explains why the Miami, Florida-based company, the world’s largest cruise operator, is lobbying the Center for Disease Control to try and get its cruise ships sailing again.\nAt stake is a share of the $16 billion in revenue that is expected to be generated by the cruise line industry this year. How soon Carnival is able to resume operations to destinations such as the Bahamas and Bermuda remains to be seen. But the pent-up demand should put wind in the sails of the company and CCL stock.\nSince the end of January, CCL stock has risen 26% to $27.34 a share. More gains are forecast as the company’s operations and revenues return in earnest later this year. The only significant intervening bounce came in 2016, when expectations jumped from 1.5% to 2.3% on expectations of a major stimulus deal from the Trump admin (which never materialized). It is hardly a coincidence that that was the only year in the last decade in which value outperformed growth, as the Greenlight head notes. Fast forward to now, when after bottoming in March 2020, inflation expectations have recovered to 2.5%. The trend became clearer in the middle of May, and value started outperforming growth then, and especially since the middle of February. Last month nearly one million jobs returned. There are signs of an emerging labor shortage.</i></blockquote><p>As for the Fed, the Greenlight boss writes that \"it fundamentally changed its framework last August. It no longer seems to care that monetary policy works with a lag. Actually, it has embraced an asymmetrical inflation policy: The Fed wants to be ahead of the curve on the downside to protect<s>the stock market and corporate bondholders</s>the economy. Behind the curve is fine on the way up no matter how frothy the stock market the recovery is. Now, it says it is only going to react to actual inflation that exceeds its 2% target for a period of time.\"</p><p>The letter then goes on to muse how the Fed will know when it is blowing the next bubble, and to stop:</p><blockquote><i>... the Fed has indicated that it believes any abnormally high inflation will be transitory. We wonder, how will the Fed know?</i> <i><b>Do price increases come with a label that says “transitory”?</b></i> <i>Our sense is that no matter how hot inflation gets in the coming months, the Fed will continue with zero interest rates and large-scale asset purchases. After all, the U.S. Treasury has a lot of debt to sell and it isn’t clear who, other than the Fed, can absorb the supply.</i></blockquote><p>It's not just Powell who is throwing caution to the wind: so are such mainstream econ \"experts\" as John Oliver:</p><blockquote><i>The bipartisan idea that deficits don’t matter has even reached popular culture. John Oliverdedicated an entire episodeof Last Week Tonight to browbeating anyone who is concerned about the growing national debt.
