"We don't interact with each other as often as Warren and Charlie do. But every quarter we will talk to each other about our respective businesses."

Abel said he and Jain regularly consulted with one another, and in particular when something unusual was happening at one of Berkshire's businesses.

Investors say they have faith.

"I can’t imagine investors haven't thought about what happens when Buffett is gone as well," said Bill Stone, chief investment officer at Glenview Trust. "You don’t need them to be as good as Buffett or Munger to make Berkshire a good company and arguably a great company."

Berkshire did not immediately respond to a request for comment outside business hours.

CEO-DESIGNATE

Berkshire has had a succession plan since at least 2006 when Buffett, then 75, told shareholders the company he has run since 1965 would be prepared for his departure.

Munger inadvertently signaled during Berkshire's 2021 annual meeting that Abel, a 61-year-old Edmonton, Alberta, native who spent a quarter century at what is now Berkshire Hathaway Energy, was the CEO designate.

Jain, 72, would retain oversight of insurance operations.

Buffett has praised both executives, calling Abel "a first-class human being" in a 2013 video message and referring to Jain as a "superstar."

A lifelong hockey fan, Abel graduated in 1984 from the University of Alberta, worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers and energy firm CalEnergy and joined the company, then known as MidAmerican Energy, in 1992, which Berkshire took over in 2000.

Abel became MidAmerican's chief in 2008 and benefited from its ability, unusual in the utility industry, to retain earnings rather than pay dividends. That freed him to make acquisitions, and expand into renewable energy.

Investors will have to wait until Abel takes over to see his willingness to shed businesses that are underperforming or have mediocre outlooks - his predecessors liked to buy and hold businesses forever - or whether Berkshire might pay its first dividend since 1967.

Jain, who was born in the Indian state of Odisha, has specialized in pricing for risk, especially large risks such as natural catastrophes. He joined Berkshire in 1986.

Besides the two top executives, Berkshire's plan also calls for Buffett's eldest son Howard Buffett to become non-executive chairman, charged mainly with preserving Berkshire's culture.

Todd Combs and Ted Weschler, who help Buffett run Berkshire's $300 billion-plus common stock portfolio - about half of which is in one stock, Apple - appear in line to take over all of it.

"Berkshire has talented people there that will help with the stock picking," said Bill Smead, chief investment officer at Smead Capital Management in Phoenix. "But it will never be the same."

LOSS OF LEGACY

For shareholders, a signature in Berkshire's universe is its annual meeting, a pilgrimage known as "Woodstock for Capitalists," where Buffett and Munger would answer more than five hours of shareholder questions.

It is a weekend of shopping, investor conferences and events that draws tens of thousands of people to Omaha in early May, even though fans can watch it streamed on their home computers or smartphones.

Many shareholders, especially local, have said they will continue going, but others have been less sure.

"What really glued us to these men was their advice on living a full life by instructing people how to think clearly, to be honest with oneself, to learn from mistakes and to avoid calamities," said Whitney Tilson, an investor who previously ran T2 Partners and Kase Capital and has attended many meetings.

In May 2020, at the height of the pandemic, Buffett held the meeting virtually from Omaha. Munger didn't attend.

"It particularly doesn't feel like an annual meeting because my partner of 60 years, Charlie Munger, is not sitting up here," Buffett said. "I think most of the people who come to our meeting really come to listen to Charlie."

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; That’s why we’ve been worried about the world’s most dominant AI chipmaker, Nvidia (NVDA), for a few weeks now.

But this past weekend – amidst the drama at OpenAI – we realized the true reason why investors should move on NVDA stock. It’s Sam Altman.

Altman is the very-recently-ousted CEO of OpenAI. And it seems he was such a good CEO that, when his employees found out he was fired by the board of directors last Friday afternoon, over 90% of them signed a petition saying they would leave the company unless he was reinstated.

Now, as of this writing, Altman has been reinstated as OpenAI’s CEO. But this drama at OpenAI has made clear that Altman is the trusted head of the world’s most talented, experienced, and driven AI engineering team – the same team that built ChatGPT. He has the full backing of the world’s second biggest company in Microsoft.

And he wants to kill Nvidia.

Going Toe-to-Toe With Nvidia

Over the weekend, reports broke that in the weeks leading up to his ousting, Altman was actively working to raise billions from some of the world’s largest investors for a new chip venture.

Codenamed Project Tigris, this venture was aimed at creating AI chips to replace Nvidia’s chips. The concept behind it was to create a firm that mass-produced Tensor Processing Units (TPUs). Essentially, these chips are custom semiconductors specifically designed to handle high volume specialized AI workloads.

And importantly, TPUs are widely considered to be cheaper than Nvidia’s GPUs.

In other words, prior to his firing from OpenAI, Altman was trying to build a lower-cost competitor to Nvidia.

And thanks to this boardroom drama, we think those efforts will likely be accelerated over the coming months.

Since this saga began, Microsoft has made it very clear that it is 100% committed and loyal to Sam Altman. Altman wants to make a new chip company. Microsoft is already working on its own AI chips under Project Athena.

Altman apparently has billions in outside financing lined up. Microsoft has billions on its balance sheet.

It’s easy to connect these dots.

To us, it is very likely that in the coming months, Projects Tigris and Athena merge to create a brand-new custom AI chip project that could become the ultimate Nvidia rival.

The Final Word

As if Nvidia didn’t have enough to worry about already…

The U.S. is levying restrictions against sales to China. Titans Microsoft, Meta (META), Amazon (AMZN), and Alphabet (GOOGL) are all working on their own chip projects. And now a brand-new “super project” aimed at building custom AI chips will likely soon begin – if it hasn’t already.

The writing is on the wall here.

Nvidia’s chokehold on the AI chips market is under attack from all sides.

Does that mean Nvidia is dead? No – far from it. But it does likely mean that NVDA stock is dead because at current levels, the valuation demands perfection. He has the full backing of the world’s second biggest company in Microsoft. And he wants to kill Nvidia.Altman was actively working to raise billions from some of the world’s largest investors for a new chip venture. Codenamed Project Tigris, this venture was aimed at creating AI chips to replace Nvidia’s chips. To us, it is very likely that in the coming months, Altman’s Project Tigris and Microsoft’s Project Athena merge to create a brand-new custom AI chip project that could become the ultimate Nvidia rival.Recently, it’s become clear that nearly every Big Tech firm is working toward manufacturing their own AI chips. That’s why we’ve been worried about the world’s most dominant AI chipmaker, Nvidia (NVDA), for a few weeks now.But this past weekend – amidst the drama at OpenAI – we realized the true reason why investors should move on NVDA stock. Going Toe-to-Toe With NvidiaOver the weekend, reports broke that in the weeks leading up to his ousting, Altman was actively working to raise billions from some of the world’s largest investors for a new chip venture. The Final WordAs if Nvidia didn’t have enough to worry about already…The U.S. is levying restrictions against sales to China. Titans Microsoft, Meta (META), Amazon (AMZN), and Alphabet (GOOGL) are all working on their own chip projects. And now a brand-new “super project” aimed at building custom AI chips will likely soon begin – if it hasn’t already. The writing is on the wall here. Nvidia’s chokehold on the AI chips market is under attack from all sides.Does that mean Nvidia is dead? No – far from it. But it does likely mean that NVDA stock is dead because at current levels, the valuation demands perfection. And perfection doesn’t happen when you have so many new, strong competitors. That means for us as AI stock investors, it is time to move on from NVDA.And of course, we say that as early, longtime bulls on NVDA stock. But we just sold our NVDA stock position in our model portfolio for more than 1,000% returns. It’s high time to move on to the next batch of AI superstar stocks that could nab us 1,000% returns over the next few years.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":152,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"hots":[{"id":263524175306768,"gmtCreate":1705371483050,"gmtModify":1705371486489,"author":{"id":"3578971018458145","authorId":"3578971018458145","name":"ocean_wave","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":3,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3578971018458145","authorIdStr":"3578971018458145"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Upstart Holdings, Inc.(UPST)$ waiting for profit... The rally could","content":"

After a brutal 2022, the market has largely shrugged off various concerns this year. The rally could steam ahead, thanks in part to some stocks that have already led it higher.

For all the worries about the health of the financial sector, the impact of the Federal Reserve's interest-rate increases and the debt ceiling debacle, the S&P 500 is still in the black over the past month, and for the year as well. However narrow the band of winners has been, the index has continued to chug ahead, and may continue to do so for another 6.5%, according to Stifel Market Strategist Barry Bannister.

He lifted his second-/third-quarter target for the S&P 500 to 4,400 on Monday, up from his previous expectation for 4,300, pushing out his concern about a potential recession and bear market to late in the year. That's based on ongoing economic resilience, as evidenced by recent data points, and leads him to believe cyclical stocks are better positioned than defensive ones -- including recent winners.

Between Covid-19 and resulting stimulus spending, among other factors, the events of the past few years have "shredded the concept of what cycles 'should' look like," Bannister writes. "We have to go back to just after WWII (late-1940s) for a similar economic setup, and the result then (as now) may be an S&P 500 trading range in 2023-2024 similar to 1946-1948 for which we are still testing the high side of the range in the current period."

He expects inflation will slow sharply -- if not fall to the very low range of 1% to 2% that dominated the last decade -- and in the post-war decades, the S&P 500 has typically turned higher after year-over-year inflation peaks. Likewise he expects the ISM PMI Manufacturing index rising in the second and third quarters, a trend that has also historically led higher the economy and S&P 500's earnings per share.

That's good news, given that the market doesn't necessarily "need strong earnings per share [it] just needs to avoid an earnings-per-share recession and the PMI hints at 2023 recession avoidance," Bannister writes.

That combination of stronger earnings and moderate inflation plus real growth would tend to favor both growth stocks -- like the tech hardware and equipment maker Apple, and Amazon.com's $(AMZN)$ heavy retailing industry -- along with cyclical value stocks, spanning industries from basic materials to diversified financials.

Those bets have already in large part been winners of course, as investors move away from the safe-haven plays that dominated 2022, to names like those in Big Tech that have done so much to fuel 2023's rally. Big tech may not be infallible, but it also doesn't seem poised for a drastic reversal, and other 2022 cyclical losers, like consumer discretionary stocks, have also rebounded ahead of the broader market.

Nonetheless, Bannister thinks investors shouldn't get too carried away by recent market strength, writing that "by late 2023 we may be more concerned," given factors like moderating employment and the historical lag between the steepening of the yield curve, which began again in March and a recession. Many other industry watchers have also warned of a late-year selloff.

Still, the arrival of any recession has been continually pushed back this year, so that by the end of 2023, debates about whether it's tardy or nonexistent may become fodder for 2024 predictions.

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Apple and Amazon Stock Could Power the S&P 500 to 4400
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nApple and Amazon Stock Could Power the S&P 500 to 4400\n
\n\n
\n\n\n<div class=\"head\" \">\n\n\n

\n\n
\n
Dow Jones
\n
2023-05-09 12:07
\n
\n\n
\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n

After a brutal 2022, the market has largely shrugged off various concerns this year. Lancz & Associates Inc, an investment advisory firm based in Toledo, Ohio.
\n
Right after the Fed statement, the S&P 500 index reversed slight declines though it still ended a hair lower on the day.
\n
Investors have been worried about how rising inflation and a spike in COVID-19 cases might impact the central bank’s plan to potentially start withdrawing its stimulus.
\n
The central bank also said that higher inflation remained the result of “transitory factors.” The Fed kept its overnight benchmark interest rate near zero and left unchanged its bond-buying program.
\n
The Nasdaq ended higher and shares of Google parent Alphabet Inc hit an all-time high as a surge in advertising spending helped it post record quarterly results. The stock ended up 3.2%.
\n
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 127.59 points, or 0.36%, to 34,930.93, the S&P 500 lost 0.82 point, or 0.02%, to 4,400.64 and the Nasdaq Composite added 102.01 points, or 0.7%, to 14,762.58.
\n
The Fed’s statement came at the conclusion of its latest two-day policy meeting.
\n
“They had a chance to signal they were going to become more hawkish and they chose not to take it. The most important thing is they are predictable and they are remaining predictable,” said Ellen Hazen, portfolio manager at F.L. on Nasdaq, a 2.61-to-1 ratio favored advancers.
\n
The S&P 500 posted 42 new 52-week highs and no new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 44 new highs and 67 new lows.
","source":"lsy1601381805984","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; Lancz & Associates Inc, an investment advisory firm based in Toledo, Ohio.\nRight after the Fed statement, the S&P 500 index reversed slight declines though it still ended a hair lower on the day.\nInvestors have been worried about how rising inflation and a spike in COVID-19 cases might impact the central bank’s plan to potentially start withdrawing its stimulus.\nThe central bank also said that higher inflation remained the result of “transitory factors.” The Fed kept its overnight benchmark interest rate near zero and left unchanged its bond-buying program.\nThe Nasdaq ended higher and shares of Google parent Alphabet Inc hit an all-time high as a surge in advertising spending helped it post record quarterly results. The stock ended up 3.2%.\nThe Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 127.59 points, or 0.36%, to 34,930.93, the S&P 500 lost 0.82 point, or 0.02%, to 4,400.64 and the Nasdaq Composite added 102.01 points, or 0.7%, to 14,762.58.\nThe Fed’s statement came at the conclusion of its latest two-day policy meeting.\n“They had a chance to signal they were going to become more hawkish and they chose not to take it. The most important thing is they are predictable and they are remaining predictable,” said Ellen Hazen, portfolio manager at F.L. Putnam Investment Management in Wellesley, Massachusetts.\nIn other earnings news, Microsoft Corp ended down 0.1% even as a boom in cloud services helped it beat Wall Street expectations for revenue and earnings.\nVolume on U.S. exchanges was 9.86 billion shares, compared with a similar average for the full session over the last 20 trading days.\nAdvancing issues outnumbered declining ones on the NYSE by a 1.85-to-1 ratio; on Nasdaq, a 2.61-to-1 ratio favored advancers.\nThe S&P 500 posted 42 new 52-week highs and no new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 44 new highs and 67 new lows.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":393,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":144476600,"gmtCreate":1626312428600,"gmtModify":1703757617908,"author":{"id":"3578971018458145","authorId":"3578971018458145","name":"ocean_wave","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":3,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3578971018458145","authorIdStr":"3578971018458145"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Good","listText":"Good","text":"Good","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":9,"commentSize":3,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/144476600","repostId":"1125163957","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1125163957","pubTimestamp":1626304818,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1125163957?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-07-15 07:20","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Netflix hires Facebook gaming executive Mike Verdu","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1125163957","media":"cnbc","summary":"Mike Verdu worked at EA and Kabam before joining Facebook.Netflix has cited the video game Fortnite in the past. The hire comes after a Stranger Things game and choose-your-own-adventure content Netflix has offered. The move reflects an ambition at Netflix to go beyond offering television shows and movies to millions.
