But that’s","content":"
(Bloomberg) -- Buying shares trading at 40 times earnings may not sound like a good deal. But that’s exactly what Maneesh Deshpande is telling clients to do.
\n
The head of equity derivatives strategy at Barclays Plc just upgraded his recommendation on Apple Inc. and other technology giants, advising investors to own more of these stocks. Often known as Faamg, the group is getting a reprieve after lagging behind the market since October.
\n
As stretched as the Faamgs look -- a 35% premium over the S&P 500 Index -- Deshpande says judging valuations based on an absolute level or comparing them to the rest of the market is flawed because it doesn’t acknowledge the growth advantage that these tech giants offer in the long run. In other words, they deserve a higher multiple because of their superior earnings power.
\n
A more appropriate approach, Deshpande says, is to measure the shares against their own history. Going by that, the valuation of Faamg stocks is now on par with levels seen before the pandemic. By contrast, the S&P 500 fetches a premium relative to where it was in December 2019.
\n
“It’s like saying New York real estate is cheap right now, but it’s not going to be as cheap as Montana ever. It’s cheaper relative to where it was,” Deshpande said by phone. “That is still notable.”
\n
The tech behemoths, once superstars at the top of the leaderboard, had a tough start to the year. Their total market value rose less than 8% in the first five months, while indexes tracking commodity and financial shares each advanced more than 20%. The underperformance came during increased Washington discussions about regulations and taxes and as the threat of higher interest rates weighed on richly valued stocks.
\n
Now with inflation expectations starting to abate, the Faamg stocks -- Facebook Inc., Apple, Amazon.com Inc., Microsoft Corp. and Google parent Alphabet Inc. -- are reclaiming dominance. The group has climbed 6.3% this month, a gain that none of the 11 main S&P 500 industries has been able to beat. Without them, the index’s 0.9% gain would have reversed to a loss of 0.4%.
\n
In other words, Deshpande’s line of thinking seems to be resonating in the market. At least for now.
\n
“You really have a group that’s underperformed the broader tape, that is still growing earnings and that’s how they get cheaper,” said Art Hogan, chief strategist at National Securities. “A 30% grower should probably be ascribed something higher than a steel mill growing at 8%.”
\n
Indeed, the Faamg’s combined income expanded by an annual average 15% in the past five years, four times the S&P 500 as a whole. While their growth is expected to begin lagging this quarter, their edge will likely return in the second half of next year, analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg Intelligence show.
\n
Not everyone agrees that Faamg stocks look like bargains. David Donabedian, chief investment officer of CIBC Private Wealth Management, says that economically sensitive stocks are more attractive right now. Banks, for instance, are valued at a P/E multiple of 16.
\n
“I don’t think there’s a pound-the-table valuations story for why people should be piling into the megacap tech names,” said Donabedian. “I actually still think that over the back half of the year that this value/cyclical trade will probably reassert itself as market leadership.”
\n
Others share his reservations. Mutual funds have, on average, been underweight the Faamg group since 2016 and currently have near-record low levels of exposure, data compiled by Goldman Sachs Group Inc. show. But that’s exactly what Maneesh Deshpande is telling clients to do.\nThe head of equity derivatives strategy at Barclays Plc just upgraded his recommendation on Apple Inc. and other technology giants, advising investors to own more of these stocks. Often known as Faamg, the group is getting a reprieve after lagging behind the market since October.\nAs stretched as the Faamgs look -- a 35% premium over the S&P 500 Index -- Deshpande says judging valuations based on an absolute level or comparing them to the rest of the market is flawed because it doesn’t acknowledge the growth advantage that these tech giants offer in the long run. In other words, they deserve a higher multiple because of their superior earnings power.\nA more appropriate approach, Deshpande says, is to measure the shares against their own history. Going by that, the valuation of Faamg stocks is now on par with levels seen before the pandemic. By contrast, the S&P 500 fetches a premium relative to where it was in December 2019.\n“It’s like saying New York real estate is cheap right now, but it’s not going to be as cheap as Montana ever. It’s cheaper relative to where it was,” Deshpande said by phone. “That is still notable.”\nThe tech behemoths, once superstars at the top of the leaderboard, had a tough start to the year. Their total market value rose less than 8% in the first five months, while indexes tracking commodity and financial shares each advanced more than 20%. The underperformance came during increased Washington discussions about regulations and taxes and as the threat of higher interest rates weighed on richly valued stocks.\nNow with inflation expectations starting to abate, the Faamg stocks -- Facebook Inc., Apple, Amazon.com Inc., Microsoft Corp. and Google parent Alphabet Inc. -- are reclaiming dominance. The group has climbed 6.3% this month, a gain that none of the 11 main S&P 500 industries has been able to beat. Without them, the index’s 0.9% gain would have reversed to a loss of 0.4%.\nIn other words, Deshpande’s line of thinking seems to be resonating in the market. At least for now.\n“You really have a group that’s underperformed the broader tape, that is still growing earnings and that’s how they get cheaper,” said Art Hogan, chief strategist at National Securities. “A 30% grower should probably be ascribed something higher than a steel mill growing at 8%.”\nIndeed, the Faamg’s combined income expanded by an annual average 15% in the past five years, four times the S&P 500 as a whole. While their growth is expected to begin lagging this quarter, their edge will likely return in the second half of next year, analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg Intelligence show.\nNot everyone agrees that Faamg stocks look like bargains. David Donabedian, chief investment officer of CIBC Private Wealth Management, says that economically sensitive stocks are more attractive right now. Banks, for instance, are valued at a P/E multiple of 16.\n“I don’t think there’s a pound-the-table valuations story for why people should be piling into the megacap tech names,” said Donabedian. “I actually still think that over the back half of the year that this value/cyclical trade will probably reassert itself as market leadership.”\nOthers share his reservations. Mutual funds have, on average, been underweight the Faamg group since 2016 and currently have near-record low levels of exposure, data compiled by Goldman Sachs Group Inc. show. But this stance cost them dearly in 2020, when tech stocks were all the rage during the lockdown.\nTo Faamg fan Deshpande, a recent hawkish shift in Federal Reserve monetary policy adds another reason to favor the tech leviathans and companies that tend to generate stable sales growth even as the economy slows. He advised investors to trim holdings in industrials.\nFaamg’s “valuations have come in so we don’t need to have crazy growth numbers” to justify the prices, he said. “If you look at the cyclical stocks, they’re pricing in a very robust recovery that might have been OK before the Fed turned hawkish. But whatever recovery you were expecting is likely to be not as strong.”","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":251,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":121614306,"gmtCreate":1624461563305,"gmtModify":1703837553917,"author":{"id":"3579044420167883","authorId":"3579044420167883","name":"Ceyi","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4a0466df8ea91309ee55e4be04b7629f","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3579044420167883","authorIdStr":"3579044420167883"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Yes!","listText":"Yes!","text":"Yes!","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/121614306","repostId":"1145825451","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1145825451","pubTimestamp":1624433586,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1145825451?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-06-23 15:33","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Why I Believe NIO Will Beat Out Tesla","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1145825451","media":"InvestorPlace","summary":"The fact that Tesla scrapped its Model S Plaid Plus release is just part of it.Super fans of the latest and greatest high-endTesla, Inc. model received some disappointing news a week ago when CEO Elon Musk abruptly canceled the release of its highly anticipated Model S Plaid Plus with a tweet on June 6.Instead, the company has begun delivering a new Model S Plaid that has only a 390-mile range and 1,020 horsepower, though it still sprints to from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just two seconds. The go","content":"
\n The fact that Tesla scrapped its Model S Plaid Plus release is just part of it.\n
\n
Super fans of the latest and greatest high-endTesla, Inc.(NASDAQ:TSLA) model received some disappointing news a week ago when CEO Elon Musk abruptly canceled the release of its highly anticipated Model S Plaid Plus with a tweet on June 6.
\n
Source: nrqemi / Shutterstock.com
\n
Musk wrote there was… “No need, as Plaid is just so good.”
\n
The Model S Plaid Plus was supposed to be the fastest, most powerful and priciest version of the company’s Model S. The company’s sales tend to spike at the end of each quarter. For example, Tesla sold 35,478 vehicles in China in March, which was the strongest month ever in China.
\n
This is raising expectations for very strong China sales in June, especially now that the Model Y is being manufactured in Shanghai. Interestingly, since most Chinese Teslas are now made with iron phosphate batteries, these vehicles have lower range than its lithium cobalt vehicles, but its iron phosphate vehicles are cheaper and now increasingly being exported to Europe.
\n
However, I’m convinced another electric vehicle (EV) company will eventually displace Tesla as the biggest manufacturer of EVs in China.
\n
Taking Advantage of the EV Revolution’s Profit Potential
\n
I’m talking about Nio, Inc.(NYSE:NIO). NIO currently offers an electric seven-seater SUV (ES8) and a five-seater electric SUV (ES6) and recently introduced an attractive electric sedan (ET7). Its vehicles utilize NOMI, an in-vehicle artificial intelligence assistant.
\n
The company is also partnering with cutting-edge chip companies likeNVIDIA Corporation(NASDAQ:NVDA), another one of myPlatinum Growth ClubModel Portfolio stocks. NIO plans to use the NVIDIA DRIVE Orin system-on-a-chip for its electric vehicles that will provide autonomous driving capabilities. The NVIDIA DRIVE Orin-powered supercomputer, which is being called Adam, will be launched in the ET7 sedan in China in 2022. Announcements like this are very positive, so NIO has been stealing some of Tesla’s thunder lately.
\n
Now, it’s important to note that NIO was bailed out by the Chinese government. The reality is that China wants to dominate at least five major industries by 2025, and NIO is now its ticket to dominate EV manufacturing.
\n
With the backing of the Chinese government, some Wall Street firms are eager to help NIO by issuing new debt or equity. So, I wouldn’t be surprised if NIO surpasses Tesla, which is currently number-two in China, for market share in the upcoming years.
\n
That means, if you missed Tesla’s parabolic run like I did, NIO is essentially giving us a “second chance” to make money in a potentially explosive electric vehicle company.
\n
Shares of NIO climbed nearly 13% since the company’s June 4 announcement of its May delivery report and positive analyst comments, while Tesla shares rose almost 3%. Strong demand in China even inspired a Citigroup analyst to upgrade NIO to a buy rating, as he expects demand to accelerate in the coming months.\nIn other words, NIO represents thecrème de la crèmeof EV stocks right now.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":406,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":120496126,"gmtCreate":1624330773965,"gmtModify":1703833699928,"author":{"id":"3579044420167883","authorId":"3579044420167883","name":"Ceyi","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4a0466df8ea91309ee55e4be04b7629f","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3579044420167883","authorIdStr":"3579044420167883"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$XIAOMI-W(01810)$Finally a XiaoMi shareholder.Hahhaha. Financial Report 2020
\n
Net sales from various products are as follows: Vehicle (93.4%), Energy Package, Service Package and Other Embedded Services (6.6%).
\n
FY2020 Analysis
\n
NIO had an FY20 earnings beat. There is top-line growth of 172.8% with the bottom line growing by 30.2%. This is primarily due to a strong quarter 4, which benefited from the reopening of the economy in China. Q4 revenue grew 133% YoY and 47% QoQ. I also see this as a barometer of post-pandemic demand in FY21. Another positive sign is the improvement of Gross Profit Margin (GPM) to 17.2%, with the operating expense ratio (OER) narrowing to 31.2% in Q4.
\n
Outperformance in Q4 instills confidence that revenue is on track to grow by a forecasted 124.19% in 2021. In addition, the strong guidance given by senior management for Q121 was met according to the latest announcement; 20,060 vehicles delivered in the first 3 months, a 423% YoY increase.
\n
Unique Energy Solution
\n
Contrasting to Tesla(NASDAQ:TSLA), NIO believes that drivers are now ready for \"Battery-as-a-service\" and offers an electric car with a swappable battery. There are a few strategic advantages to that move.
\n
One is the lower upfront EV cost which makes it a lot more palatable for consumers to adopt NIO cars vs. conventional ones and other competitors. Secondly, battery swapping is a great avenue to retrieve data points on battery performance and user preferences, which are critical in the long run. Thirdly, it distinguishes NIO from its fiercest competitor Tesla in the luxury EV market.
\n
Not forgetting the additional revenue stream from NIO House, NIO Power and other power solutions. The increase in the proportion of \"Other Sales\" to revenue affirms that.
\n
Extension of New Energy Vehicles (NEV) Subsidy to 2022
\n
NEV subsidy has been a key driver in the adoption of electric vehicles in China. In fact, the subsidy scheme has been around since 2009. Originally slated to end in 2020, the Chinese government decided to extend it for another 2 years but with tightened qualification.
\n
EVs over CNY300,000 are eligible for subsidies only if they support battery swapping. This favours NIO as it considerably reduces the prices of NIO models.
\n
Subsidy and Baas Impact on NIO prices
\n
Source: Counterpoint Research
\n
Booming Industry
\n
China is the world's largest auto market and the pie for the EV market is huge. NIO being one of the market leaders, has a long runway to grow its business. In addition, the rising wealth and the fast-growing middle class, coupled with the dual circulation strategy will serve as a strong tailwind for the EV industry.
\n
According to the China Society of Automotive Engineers (China-SAE), Sales of NEV in China are expected to grow by 4x to 20% of overall new car sales by 2025, and to 50% by 2035. The commitment by Xi Jinping to cut greenhouse gases might potentially accelerate that growth as well.
\n
Risks
\n
Even though there are fears in the market over sudden interest rates hike by the Fed, it's extremely unlikely given the repeated commitment to hold rates till 2023. That being said, the increase in rates can be detrimental to NIO's valuation and will increase their financing cost.
\n
Continuous shortage of semiconductors has led to NIO's temporary suspension of production in March. Though this is unlikely to occur again, it remains as an overhang for the automobile industry.
\n
Worse-than-expected execution and delivery of vehicles will also be a drag to the business. I take comfort in Q1 delivery figures.
\n
Valuation
\n
There is a broad decline of EV counters in recent months due to the risk-off sentiment in the Chinese market and profit-taking after a record year. The climbing UST was also a huge downer for the equity market.
\n
However, I believe these are systematic factors, not specific to the firm. The structural story of the booming EV market remains intact. The fundamentals of NIO are still sound. As such, investors should take this opportunity to buy into weakness.
\n
Income Statement
\n
Source: Bloomberg, Proprietary Analysis
\n
Based on my forecast model, revenue is expected to grow 124% in 2021, on the back of 2.5x sales volume in 2021. Priced at $149,990, it was to feature a range of 520 miles, thanks to its innovative 4680 battery cells, 1,100 horsepower and the ability to speed from 0 to 60 mph in less than two seconds.
\n
Instead, the company has begun delivering a new Model S Plaid that has only a 390-mile range and 1,020 horsepower, though it still sprints to from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just two seconds.
\n
As a way to “sugar coat” its flip flop, Tesla said the Model S Plaid is just as fast as the Model S Plaid Plus and $20,000 cheaper. Humm.
\n
This “bait and switch” has some Tesla fans worried, since they had deposits on the Model S Plaid Plus and wanted the innovative 4680 battery cells that Tesla had been touting as the key to longer range and more power. Essentially, the 4680 battery cells were the latest great Tesla development, since they were the first batteries to also be a structural component that supposedly allowed Tesla to lower the weight of its vehicles.
\n
Both the company’s Austin and Berlin manufacturing plants now under construction are supposed to also be making the 4680 batteries for new Tesla vehicles. If there is a problem with the engineering associated with utilizing the 4680 batteries or making them a structural component, then Tesla has grossly miscalculated, which is now worrying investors.
\n
Clearly something happened to delay the 4680 batteries that were supposed to provide Tesla with a competitive and engineering edge. For Tesla’s sake, I hope they figure out the problems associated with their much hyped 4680 battery cells, otherwise concerns about its two new manufacturing plants will emerge, as well as the stock losing more of its “mojo.”
\n
As someone who owns more than a few high-performance vehicles, I can tell you that the engineering geeks I know donotwant to get a new Model S Plaid instead of a Model S Plaid Plus and will likely ask for their deposits back.
\n
What Tesla did is like Ferrari or Porsche telling its customers that one of their much-hyped new performance models is now not being sold because the base model was just as good! Car fanatics, like myself, like the latest and greatest engineering tidbits, so we would rather cancel our orders versus settle for a base model.
\n
The good news for Tesla is that its China sales in May resurged to 21,936, up sharply from 11,671 in April.
The reality is that this company is on the verge of dominating the EV market in China and Hong Kong.
Last year, the Chinese government injected $1 billion and now has a 24% ownership in the company.
Company management noted that deliveries were “adversely impacted for several days due to the volatility of semiconductor supply and certain logistical adjustments.”
\n
Interestingly, despite the month-to-month dip, NIO’s deliveries were still up 95.3% year-over-year. Priced at $149,990, it was to feature a range of 520 miles, thanks to its innovative 4680 battery cells, 1,100 horsepower and the ability to speed from 0 to 60 mph in less than two seconds.\nInstead, the company has begun delivering a new Model S Plaid that has only a 390-mile range and 1,020 horsepower, though it still sprints to from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just two seconds.\nAs a way to “sugar coat” its flip flop, Tesla said the Model S Plaid is just as fast as the Model S Plaid Plus and $20,000 cheaper. Humm.\nThis “bait and switch” has some Tesla fans worried, since they had deposits on the Model S Plaid Plus and wanted the innovative 4680 battery cells that Tesla had been touting as the key to longer range and more power. Essentially, the 4680 battery cells were the latest great Tesla development, since they were the first batteries to also be a structural component that supposedly allowed Tesla to lower the weight of its vehicles.\nBoth the company’s Austin and Berlin manufacturing plants now under construction are supposed to also be making the 4680 batteries for new Tesla vehicles. If there is a problem with the engineering associated with utilizing the 4680 batteries or making them a structural component, then Tesla has grossly miscalculated, which is now worrying investors.\nClearly something happened to delay the 4680 batteries that were supposed to provide Tesla with a competitive and engineering edge. For Tesla’s sake, I hope they figure out the problems associated with their much hyped 4680 battery cells, otherwise concerns about its two new manufacturing plants will emerge, as well as the stock losing more of its “mojo.”\nAs someone who owns more than a few high-performance vehicles, I can tell you that the engineering geeks I know donotwant to get a new Model S Plaid instead of a Model S Plaid Plus and will likely ask for their deposits back.\nWhat Tesla did is like Ferrari or Porsche telling its customers that one of their much-hyped new performance models is now not being sold because the base model was just as good! Car fanatics, like myself, like the latest and greatest engineering tidbits, so we would rather cancel our orders versus settle for a base model.\nThe good news for Tesla is that its China sales in May resurged to 21,936, up sharply from 11,671 in April. It's hard to see 10 years into the future, and the unexpected can always leap up to disrupt a sound narrative.

However, there are steps we can take to identify companies with stellar growth opportunities and sustainable competitive advantages. Some mega-trends are relatively easy to predict, and the best companies enabling those trends are likely to outperform the market over the long term. With a 10-year time horizon, we don't have to take as much care to limit volatility or nitpickvaluation ratios. A decade from now, the winners will have ridden out economic cycles and grown enough to justify all but the most aggressive valuations today.

These two stocks have established businesses, exposure to major tech trends, and reputable products in growth categories. They're great building blocks for your investment portfolio.

NVIDIA

NVIDIA(NASDAQ:NVDA)rose to prominence as a leader in the design and production of graphics processing units (GPU) for computers. The company's products have evolved to become important components in data centers, cryptocurrency mining hardware, autonomous vehicles, and robotics. This aligns NVDIA's fortunes directly with some of thedisruptive technology trendsthat are expected to define the next decade. As blockchain, AI, security, remote connectivity, and video gaming become more prominent, demand for NVIDIA's industry-leading products will also grow.

The company is also in advanced discussions to acquire a licensed chip design company called Arm, which would expand NVIDIA's operations into a new growth avenue. That'd be especially true if moves fromAppleand others to manufacture chips internally boost demand for chip design services.

The story has a fair share of risks. The semiconductor industry is notoriously cyclical, as demand and pricing can fluctuate drastically based on theproduct replacement cycle, rather than global macroeconomic conditions. Plus, a serious decline in highly volatile cryptocurrency prices could also see a steep drop in demand for the chips used in mining. NVIDIA trades at more than 38 timesforward earnings, nearly 19 timesprice to book, and has anenterprise-value-to-EBITDAratio above 55. If bad news creeps in, share prices could crater quickly.

Still, NVIDIA is growing rapidly, and its products have an excellent reputation. The company is deeply connected to all of the most exciting technology trends of the next decade, and there's an enormous opportunity ahead for shareholders. It's good to hold today, and it could be much larger in the future.

Microsoft

Microsoft(NASDAQ:MSFT)is famous for its Windows operating system and the Office software suite, but it is also one of the major players incloud services. The company also owns the networking and employment social media platform LinkedIn, has a large video game business, and sells the popular Surface brand of touchscreen computers.

Microsoft has a rare combination of favorable characteristics. The company enjoys stability through enormous scale and product diversity, but it is also delivering exceptional growth -- that's not common. For the first six months of fiscal 2021, total sales increased nearly 15% over the prior year. The company's Azure server products and cloud services grew 50% year over year in the most recent quarter. That segment has expanded to exceed the revenue produced by Microsoft's flagship personal computing products. Almost every business is tech-enabled now, and the inevitable growth of software as a service (SaaS), cybersecurity, and remote collaboration is a catalyst for cloud service providers.

Microsoft is in direct competition with fearsome heavy-hitters includingAmazon,Alphabet, and Apple. They're great building blocks for your investment portfolio.NVIDIANVIDIA(NASDAQ:NVDA)rose to prominence as a leader in the design and production of graphics processing units (GPU) for computers. If bad news creeps in, share prices could crater quickly.Still, NVIDIA is growing rapidly, and its products have an excellent reputation. The company is deeply connected to all of the most exciting technology trends of the next decade, and there's an enormous opportunity ahead for shareholders. It's good to hold today, and it could be much larger in the future.MicrosoftMicrosoft(NASDAQ:MSFT)is famous for its Windows operating system and the Office software suite, but it is also one of the major players incloud services. The company also owns the networking and employment social media platform LinkedIn, has a large video game business, and sells the popular Surface brand of touchscreen computers.Microsoft has a rare combination of favorable characteristics. Almost every business is tech-enabled now, and the inevitable growth of software as a service (SaaS), cybersecurity, and remote collaboration is a catalyst for cloud service providers.Microsoft is in direct competition with fearsome heavy-hitters includingAmazon,Alphabet, and Apple. That's certainly a risk. That said, Azure is second only to AWS in the cloud market, with 20% share. Encouragingly, it has actually gained market share over the past year. Microsoft will grow by merely maintaining share in the next decade, as cloud services are expected to expand nearly 20% annually. At a forward P/E ratio of only 28.7, there's too much upside potential here relative to the risks associated with competition.
Mutual funds have, on average, been underweight the Faamg group since 2016 and currently have near-record low levels of exposure, data compiled by Goldman Sachs Group Inc. show. But this stance cost them dearly in 2020, when tech stocks were all the rage during the lockdown.
\n
To Faamg fan Deshpande, a recent hawkish shift in Federal Reserve monetary policy adds another reason to favor the tech leviathans and companies that tend to generate stable sales growth even as the economy slows.
