a Chinese netizen revealed that a well-known American e-commerce platformAmazonMany cotton products from China may be removed from shelves because, according to U.S. government regulations, no cotton product exported to the United States can contain cotton from Xinjiang, otherwise it is very likely to be detained.

However, Xinjiang is the most important cotton producing area in China.

As shown in the image below, a Douban user named \"Wogua Monster\" posted yesterday that a Chinese merchant exporting cotton products to the United States through the Amazon platform told him that Amazon is requiring Chinese exporters to provide proof that their cotton products do not contain Xinjiang cotton.

In a document purportedly sent by Amazon to Chinese exporters, Amazon stated that since 85% of China's cotton comes from Xinjiang, some customers have requested that Chinese merchants provide such proof; otherwise, cotton products otherwise, cotton products from China may be seized by U.S. customs until the merchants can prove that the cotton does not originate from Xinjiang.

Another set of chat screenshots provided by \"Wogua Monster\" shows that some people suspected of being Chinese merchants said that sellers simply could not provide proof that their exported products did not contain Xinjiang cotton. For example, the well-known clothing brand GAP and its Oly Navy and Banana Republic brands, IKEA and H&M have also stopped exporting products that recognize Xinjiang cotton to the United States and have stopped purchasing goods from suppliers in Xinjiang.NikeThey stated that they do not use cotton from Xinjiang, and the company has also informed its suppliers not to use Xinjiang cotton.

However, this Washington Post report is not criticizing the US government's ban on Xinjiang cotton as wrong, but rather arguing that the lack of transparency in the downstream supply chain of the garment industry, coupled with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, will make it difficult for the US government to implement the ban on Xinjiang cotton quickly and comprehensively.

Some of the \"labor organizations\" interviewed by the newspaper said that suppliers are very good at \"deceiving\" their customers. A clothing brand manufactured in the United States also stated that Western brands generally do not deal directly with raw material suppliers in China, so they cannot guarantee that the raw materials are safe. It is better to use their American clothing directly.

An official from the American Apparel and Footwear Association stated that American brands are aggressively removing Xinjiang cotton from their supply chains, but this process will be slower due to the impact of the pandemic.

In addition, The Washington Post also mentioned that American chemical companies are collaborating with some clothing brands to trace the origin of cotton through chemical methods in order to further exclude cotton from Xinjiang.

In summary, the aforementioned US media reports indicate that the US government had already enacted regulations to directly ban cotton and other products from Xinjiang as early as January of this year, which forced a large number of businesses exporting cotton products to the United States to cut cotton from Xinjiang from their supply chains. However, since Xinjiang is China's main cotton producing region, the US government's ban will inevitably lead to a \"one-size-fits-all\" attack on Chinese cotton manufacturers and exporters of related products. Some US political forces and local companies are also taking the opportunity to incite this rejection of Chinese cotton.

Therefore, the information revealed by the Douban netizen \"Wogua Monster\" does not seem to be \"unfounded\".

Finally, The Washington Post mentioned in its February report that the ban imposed by the United States alone would not actually affect China's overall international garment exports because the demand in the international market was huge. However, the American approach did indeed lead to an increase in international demand for American cotton.

However, with pressure from the United States, more and more Western countries are considering following the United States' example and imposing a ban on Xinjiang cotton. For example, the British government stated in January of this year that British brands would be punished if they used cotton from Xinjiang harvested through so-called \"forced labor.\"

This once again demonstrates that, compared to foreign brands forced to cut off Xinjiang cotton, what we truly need to confront and retaliate against are the Western governments, led by the United States.

How to dismantle their voice in the cotton trade and prevent their political rumors from further harming the cotton industry in Xinjiang and even China? How to build our international standards and legal system and strengthen our international voice by formulating industry standards, trade rules, and policies and regulations, so as to safeguard the development space, trade order, and interests of my country's cotton—especially Xinjiang's cotton—are the things we need to consider.
