After all, even I started to get convinced with the “apes together strong” mantra. No, I’m not scouring social media for ideas. However, I thought it wasn’t completely unrealistic that the crowd could convince others to pile into the equity unit.</p>\n<p>Alas, it seems like the magic carpet ride in AMC stock is coming to an end. While I’m not going to speak with absolute conviction, its technical posture does not look appealing. Take it from someone who has a clear financial interest in the cineplex operator – from an ethical and objective point-of-view, I cannot say that the long trade isn’t without serious risks.</p>\n<p><b>A Personal Take on AMC Stock</b></p>\n<p>Recently, I decided to see for myself what the return to normal looks like as a moviegoing customer. I watched what is one of the most anticipated films this year,<i>Black Widow</i>, at a local AMC Theatres.</p>\n<p>Aside from the conspicuous signs of mitigation requests – hand sanitizer stations, for instance – most things looked normal. From what I could tell, the concession stand was fully open: you just go and order your food like you did before the pandemic. Apparently, some cineplex operators use a mobile-app-based pickup service but I did not observe that during my visit.</p>\n<p>About the only thing that was a little bit off in terms of service was that some employees seemed rusty, which is completely understandable. In a way, we’re all trying to figure this out together so there’s no need for a nasty<b>Yelp</b>(NYSE:<b><u>YELP</u></b>) review.</p>\n<p>But the main problem I see moving forward for AMC stock is the underlying consumer demand. Granted, this is my personal observation – and I will get to the hard facts shortly. But when I went to visit on a Friday night, the crowd was buzzing but only in the context of the post-pandemic paradigm. Compared against pre-pandemic norms, it was noticeably dead.</p>\n<p>That’s a major concern for AMC stock because I went to watch a<b>Disney</b>(NYSE:<b><u>DIS</u></b>) film based off its Marvel Studios franchise. If there’s anything that should bring in the crowds, it would be<i>Black Widow</i>. You have two very relevant, A-list celebrities leading the charge under a brand that continues to churn out hit after hit.</p>\n<p>Plus, society has been starved for social experiences following the novel coronavirus-fueled lockdowns, sparking “revenge shopping” or the explosion of consumer spending after being denied for a one-year period.</p>\n<p>It just wasn’t happening this time around.</p>\n<p><b>Is the Nature of Cinema Changing?</b></p>\n<p>Could it just be I just happened to watch at a dead time in the cinematic calendar? Absolutely. It doesn’t help that I don’t live in the biggest market. As well, you should never base your investment decision on a single person’s anecdotal observation.</p>\n<p>But what’s an absolute fact is that the cineplex industry needs to start shifting into higher gear soon if wants to get back to the old normal or at least a sustainable normal.</p>\n<p>According to BoxOfficeMojo.com, during the domestic opening weekend (July 9 through July 11),<i>Black Widow</i>generated only $80.4 million. That’s a great figure for the post-pandemic paradigm. However, compared to 2019’s release of<i>Avengers: Endgame</i>– which included the Black Widow character – $80 million is a drop in the bucket. On<i>Avengers</i>domestic opening weekend, ithauled in over $357 million.</p>\n<p>By the way, for the global opening, the latter flickgrossed $1.2 billion.</p>\n<p>Moving forward, the question for AMC stock is, will Hollywood succeed in bringing people back to the big screen? I didn’t think I’d say this but I’m getting skeptical. Look, we’re not talking about some indie art house film centered on the social uprising in 1968 in Paris, France. Instead,<i>Black Widow</i>is a marquee blockbuster – a type of movie that would convince even<b>Netflix</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>NFLX</u></b>) zombies to get off their couch.</p>\n<p><b>Bottom Line</b></p>\n<p>But for right now, it seems the comeback narrative is struggling. But many others are likely to get burned when the stock price finally returns to more normal levels.</p>\n<p>If you own shares, here are three reasons to sell AMC stock right now.</p>\n<h3>1. Fundamentals always matter</h3>\n<p>Famed investor Benjamin Graham once said: \"In the short run, the market is a voting machine; but in the long run, it is a weighing machine.\" In other words, popularity drives price action in the short term, but fundamentals matter more over time.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/61107d3657db19f73a4afdc7a9e9a8e5\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"458\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>Image source: Getty Images</p>\n<p>Anecdotally, I've read comments from a shocking number of AMC shareholders who assert that fundamentals (things like revenue, cash flow, and valuation) simply don't matter. When confronted with these metrics, they dismiss them and instead resort to accusations of short interest. And maybe some of the dissenters are short-sellers, but I have never been long or short AMC stock.</p>\n<p>Here's the unfortunate truth: Fundamentals always matter. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but eventually the stock price will reflect that. And if AMC's financial picture doesn't improve, the stock price will eventually plunge. And management knows that.</p>\n<p>In fact, in a recently filed Form 8-K, management issued this warning to shareholders: \"Under the circumstances, we caution you against investing in our [stock], unless you are prepared to incur the risk of losing all or a substantial portion of your investment.\"</p>\n<h3>2. AMC stock is wildly overvalued</h3>\n<p>The pandemic hit AMC hard last year, forcing the company to shutter theaters around the world. Not surprisingly, that sparked sharp declines in attendance, sales, and profitability. YOY: Year-over-year.</p>\n<p>Oddly, as sales have plummeted, the share price has hit new highs, driving the price-to-sales (P/S) ratio to nonsensical levels. If AMC was competing in a high-growth industry, its present valuation might not be alarming. But it competes in a slow-growing sector of the entertainment industry. P/S multiples reflect data from the last day of each quarter.</p>\n<p>I'll end with this observation: Competition from streaming services has never been greater, and AMC's financial performance has never been weaker, so why is AMC stock valued more highly than ever before? At its current price, this is a dangerous investment.</p>\n<h3>3. AMC has a liquidity problem</h3>\n<p>Before the pandemic, AMC had $265 million in cash and $4.7 billion in debt on its balance sheet. It also had $4.9 billion in operating lease liabilities (i.e., rent).</p>\n<p>When the pandemic hit, the company deferred a portion of its rent, but still couldn't cover operating expenses and interest payments. So AMC issued more debt and new shares several times during 2020, effectively digging the hole deeper.</p>\n<p>As of March 31, 2021, AMC's balance sheet was insolvent&nbsp;-- even if the company sold every last asset, it still wouldn't have enough cash to cover its liabilities.</p>\n<p>Now, in order to meet its minimum liquidity requirements, attendance must reach 85% of pre-COVID levels by the fourth quarter of this year. If that doesn't happen, management said it would likely seek a \"restructuring of [its] liabilities.\" That's a fancy phrase that means shareholders would be completely wiped out.</p>\n<p>So let's ignore the red flags raised by AMC's valuation. Investors still need to ask this question: Can attendance reach 85% of pre-pandemic levels in that time frame? If you aren't certain the answer is yes, then it's time to sell this stock. The term refers to equities that have skyrocketed in value without any fundamental justification but are instead seeing their stock prices turn quite volatile based mostly on hype, often from social media platforms.\nNotably, AMC Entertainment Holdings (NYSE:AMC) is among the most popular meme stocks at the moment. Its share price has surged 2,500% this year, driven by irrational enthusiasm from retail investors looking to strike it rich. And some have certainly succeeded, becoming millionaires almost overnight. But many others are likely to get burned when the stock price finally returns to more normal levels.\nIf you own shares, here are three reasons to sell AMC stock right now.\n1. Fundamentals always matter\nFamed investor Benjamin Graham once said: \"In the short run, the market is a voting machine; but in the long run, it is a weighing machine.\" In other words, popularity drives price action in the short term, but fundamentals matter more over time.\n\nImage source: Getty Images\nAnecdotally, I've read comments from a shocking number of AMC shareholders who assert that fundamentals (things like revenue, cash flow, and valuation) simply don't matter. When confronted with these metrics, they dismiss them and instead resort to accusations of short interest. And maybe some of the dissenters are short-sellers, but I have never been long or short AMC stock.\nHere's the unfortunate truth: Fundamentals always matter. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but eventually the stock price will reflect that. And if AMC's financial picture doesn't improve, the stock price will eventually plunge. And management knows that.\nIn fact, in a recently filed Form 8-K, management issued this warning to shareholders: \"Under the circumstances, we caution you against investing in our [stock], unless you are prepared to incur the risk of losing all or a substantial portion of your investment.\"\n2. AMC stock is wildly overvalued\nThe pandemic hit AMC hard last year, forcing the company to shutter theaters around the world. Not surprisingly, that sparked sharp declines in attendance, sales, and profitability. If AMC was competing in a high-growth industry, its present valuation might not be alarming. But it competes in a slow-growing sector of the entertainment industry. Case in point: Box office revenue grew less than 1% per year between 2010 and 2019.\n\n\n\nMetric\nQ4 2014\nQ4 2017\nQ4 2020\nQ1 2021\n\n\n\n\nPrice-to-sales ratio\n0.95\n0.38\n0.20\n24.22\n\n\n\nSource: Ycharts. P/S multiples reflect data from the last day of each quarter.\nI'll end with this observation: Competition from streaming services has never been greater, and AMC's financial performance has never been weaker, so why is AMC stock valued more highly than ever before? At its current price, this is a dangerous investment.\n3. AMC has a liquidity problem\nBefore the pandemic, AMC had $265 million in cash and $4.7 billion in debt on its balance sheet. It also had $4.9 billion in operating lease liabilities (i.e., rent).\nWhen the pandemic hit, the company deferred a portion of its rent, but still couldn't cover operating expenses and interest payments. So AMC issued more debt and new shares several times during 2020, effectively digging the hole deeper.\nAs of March 31, 2021, AMC's balance sheet was insolvent -- even if the company sold every last asset, it still wouldn't have enough cash to cover its liabilities.\nNow, in order to meet its minimum liquidity requirements, attendance must reach 85% of pre-COVID levels by the fourth quarter of this year. If that doesn't happen, management said it would likely seek a \"restructuring of [its] liabilities.\" That's a fancy phrase that means shareholders would be completely wiped out.\nSo let's ignore the red flags raised by AMC's valuation. Investors still need to ask this question: Can attendance reach 85% of pre-pandemic levels in that time frame? If you aren't certain the answer is yes, then it's time to sell this stock. And while it's nowhere near that price today, the bullish activity that retail investors and speculators helped generate around Sundial allowed the company to raise millions through multiple share offerings. On May 7, Sundial reported an unrestricted cash balance of 753 million Canadian dollars, up from just CA$60 million at the start of the year.&nbsp;Since then, the company has been busy wheeling and dealing, even setting up a joint venture with SunStream Bancorp to pursue investments in the cannabis sector.</p>\n<p>Admittedly, I'm not a fan of Sundial for its existing business; its revenue has been falling and sales of CA$57 million over the past 12 months are less than the CA$72 million <b>OrganiGram</b> has generated over a similar time frame. And yet, Sundial has twice the market cap. But cash can create opportunities for the business. As Sundial acquires or invests in other cannabis companies, it can become a much stronger and more stable investment over the long run.</p>\n<h3>2. GameStop</h3>\n<p>The poster child for meme stocks is, without a doubt, GameStop. The video game retailer looked like its future was doomed in an era where people are making more of their purchases online. But there's hope for the company, with its new Chairman Ryan Cohen leading a transition toward e-commerce and away from brick-and-mortar stores. GameStop is also getting in on the non-fungible token (NFT) hype, recently launching a new site dedicated to NFTs and announcing that it is looking to hire a variety of positions for the new area of its business.</p>\n<p>Like Sundial, GameStop took advantage of its growing popularity -- its shares have soared more than 1,300% year to date (the pot stock has risen 140% while the <b>S&amp;P 500</b> is up just 12%) -- and it recently issued 3.5 million new shares to raise $551 million. All that additional cash can help fuel its transformation and allow the company to pursue other growth opportunities as they come up.</p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> big risk with GameStop, however, is in determining what price to pay for the stock. While it may be appealing to buy if it falls below $150 (which is around its recent lows), it closed last week at $100 higher than that price. Even if you decide that GameStop is worth the risk, it's important to have a price in mind as this fast-moving stock has proven to be unpredictable this year.</p>\n<h3>3. AMC</h3>\n<p>Shares of AMC have skyrocketed even higher this year and are up more than 2,300%. However, the company is also the riskiest <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> on this list. It faces significant challenges ahead with long-term debt totaling more than $5.4 billion. And with cash and cash equivalents of just $813 million as of March 31,&nbsp;it would have looked like an unlikely scenario for AMC to dig itself out of this hole. But its strong share price could help alleviate some of those concerns.</p>\n<p>On June 3, the company announced that it brought in $587 million from a new offering. That brings the total additional equity it has raised during the quarter to $1.2 billion. AMC is now exploring possible acquisitions within its industry, which could lure in more growth-oriented investors. Meanwhile, it is also seeking shareholder support to issue 25 million more shares.</p>\n<p>Now that the economy is opening back up and people are back to visiting movie theaters, the near future looks brighter for the company, especially with all that extra equity and the possible growth opportunities ahead. While there is still significant risk here -- AMC has burned through $1.3 billion in cash from its day-to-day operating activities over the past 12 months -- there is also potential for the company to rise in value. However, a lot of AMC's long-term success will ultimately depend on what opportunities it ends up pursuing, its debt load, and if demand returns to pre-pandemic levels. These are still some very big question marks today.</p>\n<p>But even if you're a risk taker, like with GameStop, you'll want to be careful with what price you pay for this incredibly volatile stock. However, the incredible enthusiasm that drove shares to ridiculous heights gave me the opportunity to exit handsomely.</p>\n<p>I still have some AMC stock in my portfolio, with the idea that since I’m playing with house money at this point, shares might move even higher. After all, even I started to get convinced with the “apes together strong” mantra. No, I’m not scouring social media for ideas. However, I thought it wasn’t completely unrealistic that the crowd could convince others to pile into the equity unit.</p>\n<p>Alas, it seems like the magic carpet ride in AMC stock is coming to an end. While I’m not going to speak with absolute conviction, its technical posture does not look appealing. I watched what is one of the most anticipated films this year,<i>Black Widow</i>, at a local AMC Theatres.</p>\n<p>Aside from the conspicuous signs of mitigation requests – hand sanitizer stations, for instance – most things looked normal. From what I could tell, the concession stand was fully open: you just go and order your food like you did before the pandemic. Apparently, some cineplex operators use a mobile-app-based pickup service but I did not observe that during my visit.</p>\n<p>About the only thing that was a little bit off in terms of service was that some employees seemed rusty, which is completely understandable. In a way, we’re all trying to figure this out together so there’s no need for a nasty<b>Yelp</b>(NYSE:<b><u>YELP</u></b>) review.</p>\n<p>But the main problem I see moving forward for AMC stock is the underlying consumer demand. Granted, this is my personal observation – and I will get to the hard facts shortly. But when I went to visit on a Friday night, the crowd was buzzing but only in the context of the post-pandemic paradigm. Compared against pre-pandemic norms, it was noticeably dead.</p>\n<p>That’s a major concern for AMC stock because I went to watch a<b>Disney</b>(NYSE:<b><u>DIS</u></b>) film based off its Marvel Studios franchise. If there’s anything that should bring in the crowds, it would be<i>Black Widow</i>. You have two very relevant, A-list celebrities leading the charge under a brand that continues to churn out hit after hit.</p>\n<p>Plus, society has been starved for social experiences following the novel coronavirus-fueled lockdowns, sparking “revenge shopping” or the explosion of consumer spending after being denied for a one-year period.</p>\n<p>It just wasn’t happening this time around.</p>\n<p><b>Is the Nature of Cinema Changing?</b></p>\n<p>Could it just be I just happened to watch at a dead time in the cinematic calendar? Absolutely. It doesn’t help that I don’t live in the biggest market. As well, you should never base your investment decision on a single person’s anecdotal observation.</p>\n<p>But what’s an absolute fact is that the cineplex industry needs to start shifting into higher gear soon if wants to get back to the old normal or at least a sustainable normal.</p>\n<p>According to BoxOfficeMojo.com, during the domestic opening weekend (July 9 through July 11),<i>Black Widow</i>generated only $80.4 million. That’s a great figure for the post-pandemic paradigm. However, compared to 2019’s release of<i>Avengers: Endgame</i>– which included the Black Widow character – $80 million is a drop in the bucket. On<i>Avengers</i>domestic opening weekend, ithauled in over $357 million.</p>\n<p>By the way, for the global opening, the latter flickgrossed $1.2 billion.</p>\n<p>Moving forward, the question for AMC stock is, will Hollywood succeed in bringing people back to the big screen? I didn’t think I’d say this but I’m getting skeptical. Look, we’re not talking about some indie art house film centered on the social uprising in 1968 in Paris, France. Instead,<i>Black Widow</i>is a marquee blockbuster – a type of movie that would convince even<b>Netflix</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>NFLX</u></b>) zombies to get off their couch.</p>\n<p><b>Bottom Line</b></p>\n<p>But for right now, it seems the comeback narrative is struggling. And while it's nowhere near that price today, the bullish activity that retail investors and speculators helped generate around Sundial allowed the company to raise millions through multiple share offerings. On May 7, Sundial reported an unrestricted cash balance of 753 million Canadian dollars, up from just CA$60 million at the start of the year.&nbsp;Since then, the company has been busy wheeling and dealing, even setting up a joint venture with SunStream Bancorp to pursue investments in the cannabis sector.</p>\n<p>Admittedly, I'm not a fan of Sundial for its existing business; its revenue has been falling and sales of CA$57 million over the past 12 months are less than the CA$72 million <b>OrganiGram</b> has generated over a similar time frame. And yet, Sundial has twice the market cap. But cash can create opportunities for the business. As Sundial acquires or invests in other cannabis companies, it can become a much stronger and more stable investment over the long run.</p>\n<h3>2. GameStop</h3>\n<p>The poster child for meme stocks is, without a doubt, GameStop. The video game retailer looked like its future was doomed in an era where people are making more of their purchases online. But there's hope for the company, with its new Chairman Ryan Cohen leading a transition toward e-commerce and away from brick-and-mortar stores. GameStop is also getting in on the non-fungible token (NFT) hype, recently launching a new site dedicated to NFTs and announcing that it is looking to hire a variety of positions for the new area of its business.</p>\n<p>Like Sundial, GameStop took advantage of its growing popularity -- its shares have soared more than 1,300% year to date (the pot stock has risen 140% while the <b>S&amp;P 500</b> is up just 12%) -- and it recently issued 3.5 million new shares to raise $551 million. All that additional cash can help fuel its transformation and allow the company to pursue other growth opportunities as they come up.</p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> big risk with GameStop, however, is in determining what price to pay for the stock. While it may be appealing to buy if it falls below $150 (which is around its recent lows), it closed last week at $100 higher than that price. Even if you decide that GameStop is worth the risk, it's important to have a price in mind as this fast-moving stock has proven to be unpredictable this year.</p>\n<h3>3. AMC</h3>\n<p>Shares of AMC have skyrocketed even higher this year and are up more than 2,300%. However, the company is also the riskiest <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> on this list. It faces significant challenges ahead with long-term debt totaling more than $5.4 billion. And with cash and cash equivalents of just $813 million as of March 31,&nbsp;it would have looked like an unlikely scenario for AMC to dig itself out of this hole. But its strong share price could help alleviate some of those concerns.</p>\n<p>On June 3, the company announced that it brought in $587 million from a new offering. That brings the total additional equity it has raised during the quarter to $1.2 billion. AMC is now exploring possible acquisitions within its industry, which could lure in more growth-oriented investors. Meanwhile, it is also seeking shareholder support to issue 25 million more shares.</p>\n<p>Now that the economy is opening back up and people are back to visiting movie theaters, the near future looks brighter for the company, especially with all that extra equity and the possible growth opportunities ahead. While there is still significant risk here -- AMC has burned through $1.3 billion in cash from its day-to-day operating activities over the past 12 months -- there is also potential for the company to rise in value. However, a lot of AMC's long-term success will ultimately depend on what opportunities it ends up pursuing, its debt load, and if demand returns to pre-pandemic levels. These are still some very big question marks today.</p>\n<p>But even if you're a risk taker, like with GameStop, you'll want to be careful with what price you pay for this incredibly volatile stock.
